Quaid’s visit lightens mood at “The Branch”
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I didn’t figure what was going on at practice yesterday until late.
The limos started rolling in. Then all these pretty folks showed up in the media room. Finally, I asked my man Fred Kalil from Channel 11 what was up.
Dennis Quaid was at “The Branch.” Making a stop to promote the new movie “The Express” about Ernie Davis. Quaid was walking around the field, with a phalanx of cameras following him around. It was a cool sight.
Quaid was chatting up with folks, letting them know about his football knowledge. He was calling out some of the Falcons formations and talking about hanging out with Jim Brown. Wonder if gave Coach Mike Smith any tips on how bring along Matt Ryan.
“I’ve been enough football movies now, where I can kind of do it now,” said Quaid, a former little league baseball player.
Quaid’s other sports movies include The Rookie, Any Given Sunday and Everybody’s All-American.
Then I got to thinking that somebody is going to do “The Michael Vick Story.” HBO, Lifetime, ESPN Movies, somebody. Don’t think it’s a Disney movie. Maybe Tyler Perry or Spike Lee does the Vick movie.
Quaid could probably play coach Jim Mora in that one. Don’t know who would be Arthur Blank. Maybe Forest Whitaker could be Falcons spokesperson Reggie Roberts. Since Jamie Foxx was so good as quarterback Steamin’ Willie Beamon in Any Given Sunday, he could be Vick.
Interested in seeing “The Express” to determine how it stacks up with the all-time great football movies. Here’s my quick top five:
Brian’s Song
Remember the Titans
Friday Night Lights
The Junction Boys
(tie) The Longest Yard (original 1974 version) and Rudy
Well, enough of the movie stuff. Folks were asking for a Grady Jackson update yesterday.
Jackson expects to play against the Chiefs after missing last week’s game when his left knee swelled up 13 hours before kickoff. He’d had his knee drained of fluids either on Friday or Saturday.
“I went out there to run, but couldn’t feel it,” Jackson said. “It was real tough watching it. That was a tough one for me, to miss a game like that. That was a bad feeling.”
Going to see The Express? Got your top five football movies? Who’s going to play Mr. Blank in the Vick movie? Will getting Jackson should help the Falcons stop Larry Johnson and get off the field on third down?

friday night lights is hands down the best football movie ever! it actually made me go out and read the book, which was a fantastic read. of course we can’t forget un-necessary roughness or wildcats, two top comedy football movies.
cant wait for sunday, i am really interested to see how the team bounces back (or doesn’t). with the beat down and the milloy thing this should be an interesting game from a mental aspect for the birds!

Disgraced former NFL quarterback Michael Vick, 28, is expected to return to professional football in 2009, but not as a player in the NFL. Vick, following his release from prison, is expected to play in the upstart United Football League (UFL), a rival league that will debut in 2009, Black Voices reports.
Vick, who was drafted No. 1 overall by the Atlanta Falcons in 2001—the first time a Black quarterback was drafted first in the NFL—is suspended indefinitely from the league while serving 23 months in prison following his conviction on a federal conspiracy charge related to a dog-fighting operation he bankrolled.
The UFL will feature teams from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Orlando, New York and Hartford. Among the owners will be Mark Cuban, owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue said that there is a “98 percent” chance Vick will play for a UFL team in 2009.
“Michael’s not going to be able to walk right back into the NFL,” Huyghue told Sports Illustrated’s Peter King. “He’s going to need some kind of buffer before he signs in the NFL, and we’ll be able to provide that for him.”

Maybe it’s just me, but Brian’s Song was too weepy and depressing for me - almost a chick flick. I feel like it’s a male version of Fried Green Tomatoes. And Friday Night Lights had almost too much of a docudrama like feel to it. I found it boring.
So I’d subtract those two and add Radio and North Dallas Forty. Love the other three though. And Titans would be my pick for the all-time best football movie.

DOL, why can’t we move on? Who gives a crap about the previous QB… he’s gone. Stop trying to stir-up the hornets nest and instead, let’s get behind the only relevant names associated with today’s Falcons team. Talking about #7 is about as relevant as talking about William Andrews. Close the freakin’ book already!

I went to a private screening yesterday of The Express yesterday at the Mall of Georgia. Dennis Quaid introduced the movie and spoke for about 5 or 10 minutes before the movie. I thought it was a great movie and a must-see for any sports fan. Quaid did an oustanding job as the Syracuse coach, and it showed how Ernie Davis handled himself with grace and dignity despite the racism and bigotry he battled on a daily basis.
Must see!

Poor McKay, fact of the matter is, Vick did play for Atlanta, he was a fan favorite, half of Atlanta still has his jersey in their closet and he’s gonna get talked about from time to time. Even more so when he’s released from jail and puts on another jersey. Get used to it. And if William Andrews life was interesting enuff, he might get a movie anout him too. The movie comment was supposed to be taken lightly…kinda like a joke type thing. So chill man.

Ernie Davis worked for my Uncle John in Elmira, he still tears up when talking about Ernie…”one of a kind, a great kid” is all about all he can get out before tearing up….said the movie was dead on…lets not talk about the statue or the pathetic team up at SU.

A Wasted Life: The Michael Vick Story a Spike Lee Joint
Michael Vick / Ron Mexico / Ookie - Tyson
Marcus Vick - Sean Patrick Thomas
Frank Beamer / Enabler No. 1 - Robert Duvall
Dan Reeves - Peter Fonda
Arthur Blank / Enabler No. 2 - John Holmes (it’s all in the mustache, baby!)
Little Jimmy Mora / Enabler No. 3 - Jack Black (a buffoon who can act like a entitled, spoiled brat who likes to get high)
T-Money - Tracy Morgan
Q - Taye Diggs
Phillips - Ice Cube
Papa Vick - Ice-T
Gerald Poindexter - Vat of Jello (or Forrest Whittiker)
Keith Brooking - Adam Sandler (hey, at least Sandler can actually TACKLE someone)
I could totally see this movie happening.

‘Remember the Titans’ was a pretty bada$$ movie. Any football movie that depicts high school or college is usually pretty good. Movies about pro football on the other hand…Lame. Have we forgotten ‘Waterboy’. Now thats a good football movie. Big Grady is always missed Mr. Ledbetter. Always. Can he stop L. Johnson? Does a bear poop in the woods? Thats what I thought.

By far, THE WATER BOY was the best football movie, at least in my opinion, I laughed from beginning to end.We definitly need Grady Jackson wide frame on the field this Sunday to plug up those holes and keep Larry Johnson from running all over us, we all know he’s hungry for a break out game.

I worked with Dennis Quaid in Arlington, Texas, when he made The Rookie. I played the role of “one of a thousand fans”. Maybe you saw me? Anyway, I got a close-up look at Quaid’s throwing arm. He’s a powder puff. I pretended to be an excited fan better than he pretended to throw a baseball. I hope that is no omen, him hanging with the Birds and Matt Ryan, especially with all the talk about Ryan’s arm being weak. I hope nothing rubs off.

Clint Eastwood would probably do a decent Michael Vick Movie, but following his casting styles in “Letters from Iwo Jima” and “Flags of our Fathers”, he would probably have Brad Pitt play Michael Vick and Luke Wilson play DeAngelo Hall.
My favorite Football Movie is the “Last Picture Show”. I know they didn’t show a lot of football, but a 20 year old Cybill Sheppard in the nude makes up for that.

Matt Ryan will also star in a movie called “The Danny Wuerffel Story”. The story of a great college QB that did not have the armstrength to be a decent NFL QB. Matt Ryan wiil get the role beause the director does not have to use camera tricks to make the Matt Ryan throws appear to flutter in mid air. His his armstrength is actually a little worse the Wuerffle’s so it adds to the dramatic appeal. HAHAHAAHAHA. No way MV7 plays in a start up league. He will be back in the NFL in 09 and the Falcons will be stuck with a 72 million dollar weak armed chomp.

By AugustaDawg, you are a dumbass. You and the AJC are the racist. What did I say in my post that was racist or had anything to do with race, NOTHING. But, D. Orlando Ledbetter, wants to be funny and cute and writes that maybe Spike Lee or Tyler Perry will do a movie on MV7. That is being overtly racist. The carzy thing about it is some of the media in ATLANTA do not even try to hide there racist views anymore. They just come out and say it, just stopping short of using the N word. You racist pigs all stick together and can dish it but you can’t take it. But if you want to know what I am, ask your MAMA, she knows me very well.
