A quick look at the Chiefs

Much like the Falcons, the Chiefs have a full-blown youth movement underway. They started five rookies and played 11 rookies in their season opener on the road against New England and are trying to break in a young quarterback Brodie Croyle.

The former Alabama signal caller suffered a separated shoulder in the third quarter of the New England game and didn’t play last week. Veteran Damon Huard took over, but was knocked out last week against Oakland after suffering a dizzy spell. Second-year man Tyler Thigpen, of Coastal Carolina and from Winnsboro, S.C., took over.

Despite getting gashed for 300 yards rushing by Oakland’s Darren McFadden and Michael Bush, the Falcons can’t afford to take the Chiefs lightly. Late in the fourth quarter against New England, they were down 17-10 with the ball on the 5-yard line. They couldn’t punch it in to tie the game.

Whoever ends up at quarterback against the Falcons, he;ll have some superb receivers in Dwayne Bowe and tight end Tony Gonzalez. Running back Larry Johnson is off to a slow start, but is still very dangerous.

On defense, tackle Glenn Dorsey, whom the Falcons passed over to take quarterback Matt Ryan, starts alongside second-year tackle Tank Tyler. They traded their top pass rusher Jared Allen to Minnesota, but still have defensive Tamba Hali, who had 7.5 sacks last season.

Is this a trap game for the Falcons? Will they be able to spring Michael Turner loose in the run game? Can second-year guard Justin Blalock handle Dorsey, who’ll be out to prove the Falcons made a mistake?

On paper it is ours to lose however, this will be a game of stage setting. Look for more tight end action in this game by our guys. This game will probably feature our most balanced attack offensively.

Oh, good morning. Screamers wanted. Tickets can be ordered by phone via Ticketmaster at (404) 249-6400 or (800) 326-4000.

When you are as young and inexperienced as the Falcons are this year, there is no such thing as a trap game. It’s not like they are 14-0 and looking past the Chiefs because they play the Patriots in week 16. Every game should be like a playoff game to these young birds. They are not yet good enough to look past anyone, no matter how bad that team may seem.

Tampa, takes our manhood every time we play them. It’s like wer’e afraid of that team. 7 straight loses & cheap shots on our rookie quarterback, and our team do nothing about it.

This should be a good match-up. Two young teams evaluating young talent. I expect to see more pressure on the quarterback from our guys, Roddy should have a breakout day, and hopefully we’ll get to see the “burner” and Norwood control the ball and eat up the clock. Falcons victory 20-10.

By T-Town Dawg, you are right, the Falcons can’t look past anyone we are just as young as they are. But, we have a big advantage over KC and thats our coaching staff. Herm Edwards is terrible. HE should be fired by midseason. It will be a close game, Larry Johnson have let his displeasure of how he has been used this season be known. So, I see KC trying to pound us with LJ going for around 150 yards. but the Falcons will pull this one out by a field goal. Norwood will have a couple of huge runs in this game. Matt Ryan will rebound with a decent game. We will make a concerted effort to not expose him to long throws to hide his weak arm strength. He will on throw the short dink and donk passes. But watch out for the Falocn receivers to get plenty of yards after the catch.

Matt Ryan against an inexperience (rookie starting corners) Cover 2 defense. This game will be over by 3 pm because neither team will throw more that 20 passes.

Turner has a tweaked ankle so KC gets a slight nod.

When are you going to start calling out Keith Brooking? He may do all the right things off the field but on the field he’s awful. When is the last time this guy made a play, a game changing/ game saving play? Don’t tell me about how many tackles he has unless the are for a loss which there are not to many. The Falcons should never draft another player from GT or UGA again. They get so married to them from a PR standpoint that they get blinded. Win games put the best players on the field and the people will come.

Hopefully we can establish the run game so Matt will only have to manage the game with a few dink and dunks passes. The special team needs to step up and make a play. Jason Elam will be the player of game. 13-10 Falcons

Good Day All,

Darryl: You are Spot On about the Birds not taking the Chiefs lightly! The Chiefs are starving for a win. On the other hand we will also see a very determined Matt Ryan.

I would like to see Muggs Mughelli catch a few more this week, as this sets up all kinds of stuff.

Darryl: Please post an update on Grady’s knee. Would be good fuel for this thread.

I think KC will watch film and take a page from the bucs defense with a 8 man front and blitz packages. This will force ryan to throw making quick decisions causing him to make mistakes.I see a lot of falcon fans taking KC lightly because of there(KC) first 2 games already crediting a win.Look out, don’t be so sure.

Some of you guys are giving KC to much credit. Take a page out of Tampa’s book? Really? Does KC have the personnel to even consider that? IF McFadden and Bush (one rookie and the other one might as well be a rookie) can go for nearly 300 yards, then Turner (hurt or not, dude is a stud) and Norwood will go for at least 200 combined. On top of that Herm Edwards is probably the worst coach in the league. Al Davis should be thinking his lucky stars that he is not the coach of the Raiders, not thinking about firing his current one. Matt Ryan is the real thing. The only reason he will not put up Peyton Manning rookie numbers is because he acually has a run game that is pretty darn good no matter what happened this past week.

Trap game? We are pretty equal in personel. I’m really optimistic about the Falcons and my heart says that we can win every week but when I step back and think about it based on new coach, new QB new whatever, we shouldn’t be favored in any games by much if any.

I have nothing against Matt Ryan, but personally, I would have taken Glen Dorsey instead of Matt Ryan in the draft and gave DJ Shockley the start for the 08/09 season. This would have saved the team about 60 million dollars or more. Whats done is done but Glen Dorsey will be coming at Matt Ryan full speed on Sunday. I hope Matt has learned from the pounding he receive from Tampa and not make the same mistakes. If the Falcons should loose to the Chiefs, we will never have another telivised game unless Mr. Blank buys all the available tickets or coach Smith replaces Matty with DJ Shockley.

Really do yall not have any pride in your team what so ever? I always read these blogs and I do not reply but, today is the day where I put you minds back where they should be. I have to admit you individuals on here are the worst fans. Why is it that when we play any decent team our dome is filled by visitors? Its because you all are just a bunch of fair weather fans. Its the Chiefs they suck!! Is it such a far fetched idea for Turner and Norwood to run the ball down their throat. I swear you are the same group that was all up on Matty Ice when he was drafted how about you stand behind the man..How about you buy a season ticket and support your team they are only like 2 bucks or something…stop your crying and acting like you all know somthing about football because half of you probably never even played. Let the pros do what they need to do and you just support them. The Falcons get enough criticism from outsiders they dont need it from their own fans. We don’t even have home games here. The Falcons have 16 road games thanks to bloggers like you!!!!

I bet Turner rushes for 250 yards by himself. Can we please breed Turner for our half back of the future? And this game will make all the love for Ryan come back. With Turner and Norwood actually making some big plays, Ryan will be able to get the ball out there again. Falcons win 27-13, and everybody loves them again until the next loss. Go Falcons!

Good to see this blog heating up!

I am confident that our Birds of Prey will prevail against the Chiefs. Here is why!

Smitty knows all too well to never ever underestimate an opponent Especially one that is 0-2

The Chiefs will come in here Blood Thirsty for their First Win.

Smitty knows that the Chiefs will be over anxious and will exploit that in a manner no different than Chuckie did on us last week. No stone will be left unturned.

Is also why I predict that Muggs Mughelli will be a busy boy Sunday.

Nice post Mr Real Talk. Would love to read your Keys to the Game.

Well CA the way I see it nobody respects Matt Ryan yet nor should they he is a rookie of course. Until he proves himself they are going to continue blitz like crazy…what they Falcons need to do is go max protection and let O Matty Boi kill them with the slot receiver whether it be robinson or douglas…That would back the D up and play honest therefor the run game can flourish…I could talk about this for a while but I gotta run Go Falcons…and oh yeah it wouldnt hurt for grimes and houston to grow about a half foot overnight either….lol

CA, these guys aren’t going to take the Chiefs lightly. Not one coach, nor one Falcon players will have that attitude. That’s just NOT the attitude that this organization is fostering. You don’t swagger when you’re 1-1 anyway. I look for them to try and smash the Chiefs.

What’s confusing is why the Atlanta Falcons cannot sell out their home games!

It’s strange to go 56 straight wins then a black out last year and as it appears, there will be plenty more black outs.

If the Atlanta fans supported this team before, why wouldn’t they support it now? Although, the unwanted faces/players have changed = still NO SELL OUTS.

I would venture to say that: 1. Most people don’t have the finances to attend a game with today’s ticket prices, high gas prices and economy

  1. Most people work on Sundays

  2. Most people don’t approve of the new quarterback and Coach

  3. Can’t root for the players on this team

  4. Don’t like the opposing teams

  5. Don’t like the traffic to and from the games

  6. Too expensive to take the entire family

  7. Don’t like the Falcons

  8. Miss Dan Reeves

  9. Miss #7

My question is what are some of the other various reasons you will not support the 2008 Atlanta Falcons?

I don’t understand why there isn’t a waiting list to see Matt Ryan either. He’s a pure drop back, stay in the pocket, smart, articulate QB, that can read defenses like a book, with a cannon arm and a twinkle in his eyes. After years and years of the fans begging for this just this, you’d think they’d be lining up around the block to get in…Maybe there’s something else going on in town.

Thigpen to start for the chiefs. That is the worst thing that could happen to the Falcons. That seals a loos for Atlanta fans. The crystal ball is showing December 7, 1986. The Falcons are 6-6-1, having just ended a 5-game losing streak. They faced the hapless (0-13) Indianapolis Dolts, at home in Atlanta. With 3 minutes to play and the Birds up 23 - 21, all they had to do was punt and hold. They punted, but a penalty made them do it again. The second punt attempt was blocked, bouncing into Atlanta’s endzone, where a Dolt fell on it. Down 28 - 23, a game David Archer (later to be radio talk show host) drove the Falcons to the Indianalopis 2 yard line, when the clock expired. Anyone who thinks KC is a gimme is forgetting that ever since Sherman blew out Atlanta, its been a Southern Hospitality kinda battle town, and that is with a big “YASSIR.”

Am I on the daddies for slow children thread??

If we don’t win this game AT HOME we ought to be shot! They’re down to a 3rd string rookie QB, come on, even Anderson should get a least some contact with the QB!! We need to open up the passing game against 2 rookie corners! We are not utilizing all of our receivers (hello Finn! You make Dennis Quaid look like a midget!). We can’t always be a run first team & Mularkey this is the week to develop the passing offense, let’s go!

By TheCutMan

I’m a longtime Chiefs fanand can offer some additional insights here. This KC team has trouble growing most everywhere you look.

QB: Starter of the week Tyler Thigpen should have been picked about 6 times against Oakland last week. He’s inexperienced, makes bad decisions but is able to move around a bit, thus getting the starting nod over the less mobile Huard. Ugh!

RB: Larry Johnson is an embarrassment! His idea of a running attempt is to turn his back into his olineman and lean his way toward the opposing tacklers. He’s moody, tends to pout and is a huge liability in the locker room. Ugh again!

DEFENSE: The LBs tackle about as well as your granny or mine! Pat Thomas, MLB, (#55) can be had most every running attempt. The Dline is a work in progress and not shown anything more than its inability to get a push in the first 2 games. The secondary has played reasonably well.

COACHING: I’m not seeing how these guys continue to hold onto their jobs. OC Chan Gailey has gone ultra conservation, read, ineffective. DC Gunther Cunningham is without a clue when it comes to making adjustments and head coach Herm Edwards is coaching like he has a lifetime contract, read, poorly.

I could go on but let’s put it out there: The Chiefs are now everyone’s homecoming opponent and, with a REAL QB in Matt Ryan, should enable the Falcons to beat up on this poor excuse of a NFL team this Sunday.

I fully expect a Falcon victory this weekend. A loss will be completely unacceptable with the Panthers, Packers and Bears on horizon. These birds need to be NO WOESE than 3-3 prior to the bye week. Are cheap shots tolerated in NFL? Even ones not flagged at time? Falcon QB was victim of numerous definite late hits and several borderline late shots. Team did not come to his aid. Oh well, pride and Falcons have not been spoken in same sentence in decades. Would be nice if they showed just a tiny bit of fire once or twice this season. Only coach (coach!) has demonstrated that maybe he cares. Ears of THAT zebra STILL burning! Keith Btooking needs to go! Will let everyone know late Sunday how many others need to hit highway northward! Unwanted in South Georgia. Enough garbage down here already!

The Falcons aren’t going to beat anybody if the ball doesn’t get into the hands of the guys who make plays. Jerious Norwood needs to get the ball in space so that he has room to run.

Roddy White needs to get the ball early and often. And I for the life of me cannot understand the concept of the TE being a blocker first. The premier offenses utilize the TE in the passing game particularly in the Red Zone. If you’re not going to throw to him it makes it easier for the defense to bring that Safety up in run support.

And from the five on in if you know that they’re not going to roll that QB out and hit that H back it’s easier to stuff the line.

I realize that they’re trying to develop this physical presence but like last week if Turner isn’t in there but you insist that you can still run the ball in then you’re going to come out on the short end in the long run.

Disgraced former NFL quarterback Michael Vick, 28, is expected to return to professional football in 2009, but not as a player in the NFL. Vick, following his release from prison, is expected to play in the upstart United Football League (UFL), a rival league that will debut in 2009, Black Voices reports.

Vick, who was drafted No. 1 overall by the Atlanta Falcons in 2001—the first time a Black quarterback was drafted first in the NFL—is suspended indefinitely from the league while serving 23 months in prison following his conviction on a federal conspiracy charge related to a dog-fighting operation he bankrolled.

The UFL will feature teams from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Orlando, New York and Hartford. Among the owners will be Mark Cuban, owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue said that there is a “98 percent” chance Vick will play for a UFL team in 2009.

“Michael’s not going to be able to walk right back into the NFL,” Huyghue told Sports Illustrated’s Peter King. “He’s going to need some kind of buffer before he signs in the NFL, and we’ll be able to provide that for him.”

Hey Y’all:

The Falcons will be winners this year. They showed me a lot against Tampa Bay. They all showed me they can hit, on offense and defense, and that they play together. the only breakdown I saw was the long run for a touchdown by Tampa’s running back. The defense was set up by Tampa on that play due the Falcons defense was running up too quickly to support and stop the run on the left side of the line and not reading the backside zone blocking scheme. The whole defense was sucked in with the motion to the left while the runner had a wide open field, with no opposition, to the right. That took a lot out of us. But we still played tough and with “ONE HEARTBEAT!!” We will have to continue to play this way and with each game the team will get stronger and stronger and we will have more than enough wins to make the playoff and be more than competetive once we get in. Any thing can happen in this game and I truly believe the Falcons are designed for immediate better days. Nevertheless, they, and we, will do it with “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!”. We, the FANS, will be there, at HOME games, and watching the away games with intensity to cheer the Falcons on in “ONE HEARTBEAT!!”. OUR TIME HAS COME!!!!!

“SHOCK THE WORLD!! One game at a time.

             "ONE HEARTBEAT!!!!"

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! This is a SECRET from a FALCON FAN!! TELL EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Question,if there was just one race in this world would there be hatred?I don’t think racism would even exist. But all of you who have problems accepting those of another race remember there’s no eternal life on this earth.meaning that one day you will clock up out of here too.I surely don’t think GOD would accept a person with hatred in his heart when 1john 4:8 says that GOD is LOVE.Just something for people of all race to think about the next time you log on and post with hatred in your heart towards a person you don’t even know.Back to football.I would say you can’t grade a team from its last performance, speaking of KC.You just can’t place a W(win)in the falcons win column.I do know this,KC will be the more desperate team trying to regard from going 0-3.This is not a gimme game for the falcons because if you check the history of these two teams playing eachother, the falcons always had a tough time.Personally i would have sat ryan down for a year and a half and got a vet at the position.I think KC win this game leaving falcon fans hopeless.Just my oppinion.

Famous quotes for Falcon fans.

You might be through with the past, but the past certainly isn’t through with you.” Movie Magnolia

Translation: 2007 was not that long ago. The Falcons genetic makeup makes them prone to finding a way to lose, more than finding a way to win.

Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” George Santayana

Translation: The crystal ball shows the future by showing one the past.

History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.” Karl Marx

Translation: We have seen the tragedy of loss and the farce of thinking any team is one to look beyond.

You can put lipstick on a pig, but its still a pig.” Unknown origin, but last used publically by the Manchurian Candidate Obama

Translation: The Falcon organization is like a pig. Matt Ryan is like lipstick.

Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.” Aesop

Translation: A win is a win only after it is a win. Before that point in time is hope. One hopes for a win. One hopes not for a loss.

Guys I want to apologize for BOO BOO’s behavior. I forgot he could read…. I mean to hide my pessimistic son’s, Lloyd, book of pessimistic quotes.

I forgot Obama has a quote in the pessimistic quote book, Obama is a PIG, and his canning ability to twist lies are the lipstick. hmm….. interesting…..

It’s funny that my brother BOO BOO would place an Obama quote right after a Karl Marx quote…haha… kinda funny!

Anyways, I got off on a tangent, again, don’t worry about BOO BOO, I think our mom is going to lock him in the basement again tonight for his pessimistic attitude. Oh well….kids will never learn…

ITS A GOOD THINK I AM A FALCON FAITHFUL!!!! WE ARE SMARTER THAN THE PESSIMISTS!!!

GOOO FALCONS!!!!

Oh crap, my son, LLOYD is crying over his #7 jersey again, I BURNED mine last night, I am going to have to BURN his too……

vick you are still the best QB on this team hand down. we miss you. Matt Ryan is a good kid and need to play behine a qb for a few shot years . If not this Kid is going to have a shot NFL stay. Defense’s are lineing up to take him out ! still no offense lineman. When is the last time the Falcon had a pro bowler on offense line? over 10 years!
