Can Ryan beat the Cover-Two

Falcons rookie quarterback Matt Ryan won his first start and so did rookie QB Joe Flacco in Baltimore.

Since 1970, the only rookie QBs to lead their teams to victories in the first two games of the season are John Elway (1983) and Ryan Leaf (1998).

Which one is going to be Elway and which will be Leaf, who’s out of football? I’m sure you Falcons fans are hoping Ryan is closer to Elway than Leaf.

Also, during the Super Bowl era, Atlanta and Baltimore were the first teams to win their first game of a season with a rookie starting quarterback and a rookie head coach, Mike Smith in Atlanta and John Harbaugh in B-more.

Tampa Bay figures to provide a much stiffer test for Ryan that Detroit did last week. The Bucs’ defense is coordinated by Monte Kiffin, who with Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy, popularized the Cover Two defense in the 1990s.

It’s the classic read and react attack. You need a lot of speed on defense to cover ground quickly.

Basically, in that scheme the four defensive linemen rush, the cornerbacks and three linebackers drop into coverage and try to track intermediate receivers through their zones while the two safeties drop deep.

There’s a daring way to beat the Cover-Two.

Green Bay under Mike Holmgren and offensive coordinator Sherman Lewis, loved to see the Cover 2 coming.

To beat the attack, they’d send two wide outs up the sidelines and sneak a fast tight end up the middle seam. (First it was tight end Jackie Harris, followed by Mark Chmura and then Bubba Franks, before he lost his speed.)

The quarterback has to have a nice arm to drill the deep pass. With the two outside guys streaking, the safeties have to make a choice. Take the outside guys or leave the middle open.

Not sure if Ryan is ready to make this read. We’ll all find out on Sunday.

Martrez Milner would be the idea speed tight end to beat the Cover Two, but he’s been nicked up and has demoted behind Ben Hartsock and Justin Peelle.

Perhaps the Falcons can sneak the slot receiver - maybe Harry Douglas - up the midde seam to be beat the Cover Two.

The Bucs are going to load up to stop RBs Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood and Ryan is going to have to make some nice throws. We’ll know much more about the quarterback of the future after this game, than we did after that 13 pass outing against the meek Detroit Lions.

Ryan’s first game was like a pop quiz, this one against Kiffin’s unit will be like an early peek at the mid-term.

Will Ryan pass his early mid-term exam? Will CB Ronde Barber and ex-Georgia Bulldog Jermaine Phillips make it a long day for him? All bets are off if Turner can break loose for 220 yards again because then Ryan won’t have to pass.

i fully expect ryan to struggle in this game. face it, he has to have some rough times to learn from them. it would be difficult to be successful without them. i think the falcons can hang tough but in the end tampa’s D will provide them with the win. i’m also concerend with our ability to stop tamps run game.

We have to run and stick to it to beat Tampa. They might stop the run early but they are still somehat undersized up front and at linebacker and they will get worn down late in the game if we stick withbashing them with Turner. In order to do that, our D has to keep the game close. As long as we an go into the 4th quarter close (down no more than 7), we should stick with the run and try to steal it in the end.

Orlando,

Great explanation of the cover 2 defense for we novices. This is what the interactive article/blog should look like - all AJC writers need to take note.

I’d be surprised if Ryan has trouble making the throws because of an arm-strength shortcoming. I just hope he gets enough time to make the read. I think Rhonde Barber has lost a step and either Roddy or Laurent Robinson can give him trouble with their size.

I think if the Falcons can run for 150 yds (team), and score 24 points (neither of which they’ve done the last couple of years), they have a great chance to win.

John, Thanks for the kind words. Right now, the run game is Matt Ryan’s best friend. If Derrick Brooks (hamstring) can’t go, that would also be helpful, too.

Good job Orlando. Good way to write the blog. For those of us who do not know much about cover2 defence. You have provided a good explanation. Some of the writers here has to take a Que from you. I think Falcons will win if they stick to running game as they did with loins. I predict this will be a close game with Falcons winning with slim margin.

I agree, DOL, great job explaining the Cover 2 scheme. Sounds like Douglass will have to come up big. The good news is that 17 points could easily win this game (for either team). Not that the Falcons defense is that great… but the Bucs offense is average on a very good day. Falcons should likewise focus on stopping the running game (as they did last week) because old man Gallaway doesn’t strike fear like the Lions receivers. But Ernest Graham does scare me because he runs with purpose (at least he did prior to getting paid this off-season).

Orlando:

I don’t usually write comments, but your explanation of the cover 2 was so informative that it deserves noting. Specifically, you covered three of the four core points of analysis extremely well: what they do, why they do it, how they do it, and alternative responses. Well done sir! If you can make this type of analysis a consistent part of your work, I have no doubt you will become known as a MUST READ for football novices and know-it-alls.

Keep it coming!

I didn’t get to watch anything but the highlights last week so I’m not sure how often they used it but Matt Ryan is a superb play-action quarterback. I attended every BC home game for the last three years (including last week’s stinker against Tech. Yuck.) and he could freeze defenses with it. I’d love to see him work it again while I’m sitting in the stands at Raymond James.

I see Atlanta finishing the season 1-15. Every team the falcons play will concentrate on stopping their run offense. And there’s all sort of ways to top a running game. Once the running game of the falcons is stopped, there’s nothing else the falcons can do. Because of his immobility, limited arm strength, and inexperience as a NFL quarterback, Matt Ryan will struggle tremendously. And if the falcons ever get behind in a game, the falcons chances of losing that game increases exponentially. Ryan proved in the pre-season game against the Baltimore Ravens third team defense, that he couldn’t move the ball up and down the field. I think his inability to move the ball will continue against regular season games. Games which will expose his weaknesses and/or strengths.

MRyan doesn’t necessarily have to have a rough time against the Bucs. If our rushing attack is as successful, especially early, as it was against Detroit, their LB’s will be force to react to play action before dropping into coverage. Without quick LB reads and drops, the cover 11 can be torched underneath. Cover 11 CB’s tend to be better at zone coverages than man to man. Without LB protection they would be force into man coverage and our WR’s would eat them alive. Their DEF success against us will depend on how successful they are in stopping our rushing attack.

The other critical component of the cover 11 is the ability to pressure the QB with the front 4. If our OL can contain their front 4 and give MRyan time, he, like most any NFL QB’s, will pick their cover 11 zone apart.

Tampa Bay no longer has the dynamic athletes they once had on their DL. They have to depend more on their LB’s and blitzing schemes to stop the run and put consistent pressure on the passer, than in the past. THE FALCONS WILL WIN THIS GM.

Hey All,

The key to Ryan’s passing game is for the Line to give him 3.5 seconds to release the ball.

I do know that 2.5 - 3.0 is the max, but I really believe that our line will provide more.

For a little contrast, Tom Brady released the ball at the 2 second mark more times than not.

So if our young QB (Ryan) gets 3 + he could possibly throw for well over 200 yards this weekend.

A strong ground game will definitely pummel the Cover 2, T2.

There is NO way we’ll be able to run the ball like we did on those pathetic Lions…Ryan will have to make some passes this game & get more of the receivers involved! Screen passes could be a way to go, too. Brian Griese is not as mobile as Garcia so maybe #98 could actually get a hand on their QB! I expect this to be low scoring but we’ll see. Should be interesting…

A fun blog for a change. Thanks. This backfield has amazing potential and they are already showing signs of being a punishing running attack. I always loved the backfield with Lynn Caine(sp) and William Andrews together and I think this one can be even better. Punish the D and keep the pressure off the rookie. I don’t mind winning 16-13. Go Falcons.

Let’s be realistic, the Falcons won’t run for 300 yards in every game (unless we get to play Detroit 15 more times). It’s unlikely that we will get even 150 running yards in each and every game. With an experienced OC like Mularkey, we have to hope that between screens, swings passes and 2 step drops, that we can use a controlled passing scheme when the running game is lacking. And yes, Ryan will need to stretch the defense (as he did with the deep pass to Roddy last week). It will also be key for our defense to create 2 turnovers Sunday and that we win the field position battle. It’s all important on a team with limited experience and growing talent (and the smallest CBs in NFL history).

DOL regarding Norwood on special teams coverage from yesterday… it’s just a matter of time before an opposing player tattoos him when he’s in full sprint (or worse, cuts his legs off). Personally, I’d rather see the Falcons use someone else then take away our “lightening” from the running game.

Great Read. From an offense perpesctive isn’t defeating the cover 2 more about creating matchups similiar to a spread offense? ie. making a LB cover Norwood or Douglas. Or have a S commit to the inside because Norwood/Douglas/TE are running a seam route. Anyway, I can see a win if we can get 120yds and 1 TD on the ground and a TD from the receivers of Norwood out of the backfield. tampa’s Offense isn’t gonna score alot, low scoring game anyway.

Locofalcon is Spot on about Arm Strength.

The film with Bill Walsh and Joe Montana summed it up. Bill did not want Montana to throw Laser Guided Rocket Arm Stuff. Bill required Joe to throw Accurate and “CATACHABLE” Balls Timing is Everything!

Ryan’s first pass was a Prime example of this.

Thank-you for your kind words. I know that many of you may not agree with my assessment that the Falcons will go 1-15 the rest of the way, and maybe it was a bit of an overstatement, but I’m not sure if Ryan is really the QB for the Falcons. Unfortunately, Coach Smith and the Falcons lied to us fans in the pre-season and did not give D.J. Shockley a fair chance at becoming the starting QB. IF DJ would have started a game, he would have been named the starter. He has all of the tangibles that Matt Ryan lacks - he has a strong arm and is very mobile - two things that Matt Ryan does not have. After the Falcons lose the next 15 games in a row with Matt Ryan under center, Coach Smith will be fired and the new coach (probably Denis Green or Herm Edwards) will come in and give DJ Shockley the fair chance that he deserves. After Vick gets out of prison, we will then have both Vick and Shockley becoming the best 1-2 QB punch in the NFL. Even though the Falcons wasted $72 million on Matt Ryan (instead of Glen Dorsey - a game changing DT), they should do the right thing and start DJ Shockley. He is clearly the best QB swith the best arm strenght - and Shockley has the most fans. I was at the game last week and I must have seen a few dozen shockley jerseys, but only about 10-15 Ryan jerseys.

Go Shockley!

If you want a Ryan Leaf on your hands, you start thinking Matt Ryan is a Messiah. Matt Ryan is a rookie. Mike Smith will run first and pass when least expected. Smith knows Tampa Bay will try its hardest to rattle a rookie QB, so the smartest thing to do is let them have to focus on the running game all game. Tampa Bay gave up over 400 yards to the Saints last week. So much for such a fearsome defense. Brees passed for over 300 yards, on 32 attempts. Once again, Tampa Bay is impotent on offense and needed a defensive TD. Matt Ryan cannot be throwing weak outs that end up going the wrong way, for easy Tampa Bay points. The Falcons should be looking at making their defense score. Hopefully, Brooks will not be at top speed. The Barber twin stepped on his foot on a long easy TD from Brees to Henderson. The Falcons have to have the mentality that 13 points will win the game for them. That means Elam has to be able to kick, long and accurate. If Matt Ryan passes 20 times for 180+ yards and the tandem RBs can break 150, the Falcons will be in the game if they have zero turnovers.

I definitely think the run game is a major factor, on both sides of the ball. However, as big a factor in this game could be the special teams and turnovers. If, as many here are saying, the game is tight, then one key turnover (for points) or special teams play that provides a cheap score could be the difference. So, maybe the Birds can pick off that crucial pass, pop the ball loose from the Bucs, or have that critical return that turns the tide of the game! Go Falcons!!!

Darryl, the Falcons will not lose the next 15 games. At worst we’ll go 7-9. Secondly, Matt Ryan has won the team over with his poise, leadership, and maturity. I bet there are a number of Tennessee Titan fans who wish Ryan was their QB. Thirdly, DJ is the 3rd string QB. Barring serious injuries to Ryan AND Redman, DJ will not see the field. I must admit, I like these new Falcons and what they bring to the table. I also admit that I once upon a time used to be a big “YOU KNOW WHO SUPPORTER” but its now time to move on.

Matt Ryan has the potential to be a great quarterback, and I believe he will be a great quarterback because of what our new GM (Dimitroff) has done for him (New Offensive Line Coach that knows the game, a “One-Two” Punch at runningback, and a kicker that can win the games when it is close)

The key for the Falcons, against Tampa Bay is Tampa Bay themselves. What I mean by this is that Tampa, has been known to beat themselves. With Garcia not starting under Center, I have a feeling the Griese will be pressing a bit. Especially if our offense can jump out and get a good lead like they did against the Lions; against a quarterback (Griese) who is playing to show that he deserves to start.

As far as Derrick Brooks, I don’t think it matters one bit if he starts or not. Tampa’s linebacking core is solid, secondary is growing old, and defensive line doesn’t really concern me, because of their small stature.

What I really think Coach Smith needs to do is come out and play a chess game with his offense. I would start the game out passing. Not necessarily deep throws or medium routes, but just enough to get Ryan in a rhythm and a few 2nd and short or 3rd and short situations. Because I have a feeling that we will come out running, in which we will, Tampa will stuff it, and Ryan will only get one opportunity on a drive to show that he can move the ball in an obvious passing situation which wouldn’t be fair. Then all of you 2001-2006 Falcon fans on here would already be giving the Ryan the boot.

I am looking for JNo to slip out of the back field as well as Ovie(at least once) and possibly Jason Snelling. All 3 can block and catch, running goes without having to be said.

Turner busts out BiG again. Ryan passes well, he is no dummy, the predicted 3 INTs is insane.

Might we see 3 wides and a flex TE package. mwhahaha In the cover two corner skills can get sloppy cause they can sometimes “rely” on help too much. Let’s see who breaks down when they have to cover multiples after our running game makes them bite on the fakes. Can Ryan find the open man quickly enough against the rush when we do?

Don’t think they will have played as physical a Falcons O-Line before and it might take them back a little.

This game will come down to our OLine and backs doing their job to take the pressure off Ryan early. Don’t think Tampa is gonna score a lot on us.

DOL, I have to agree on the analysis of the Cover 2. Great job! You may have to teach some of these NFL coaches how to attack it LOL.

I do think that Tampa will be expecting the Falcons to run, run, and run some more. I think Mularkey will use Ryan to get some short screen passes to Norwood and get him in the open field.

The key will be how the Falcons LBs and secondary will respond against Griese. If they can keep Tampa to at least 13 points I think Ryan and Turner will do enough to win.

I agree with CA that an accurate and catchable pass is all that is needed from Ryan’s arm. He needs to improve his looking- off receivers, but is doing ok. I can see Harry Douglas in the seam, and Hartsock and Peelle seeing more balls than previously. With all that Ryan has going on locating open receivers and reading coverage, I don’t see him passing longer than 25 yds…and he doesn’t have to. The Bucs will get burned trying to decide whether Ryan is going to pass, or if thundering Turner has already gone by them. I think Turner is really causing them to worry about their defensive rush. Yours was a great article DOL, please keep it up. I didn’t see the usual nasty comments, so I am guessing the AJC is finally starting to police the posts.

Like everyone else here says, the Run is key. If the Falcons can run enough to keep the Defense honest then we have a shot. If TB completely shuts down the run, and Forces us to throw every play, then he’ll struggle, & we’ll lose. If Matt has to put it up 30-40 or more times, then he’s young, and will make some mistakes. If we can run some, and let him make a few throws, and be more of a game manager, then we’ve got a shot.

Hopefully, w/ Turner, we may be able to run some, b/c TB’s weakness is a Power Run game, and that’s The Burner’s game.

It seems like some of you are Vick/Shockley fans before you are Falcons Fans. A true Falcon fan should put the TEAM number one, not individual players. Just my 2 cents. Anyways, I’ve been a Falcon fan (and Charger fan, since I live in SD) since before the Deion days and this is the most excited I’ve been (even more than ‘99). I don’t expect them to win many games this year, but I am so excited because TD is building a foundation for a great franchise just like AJ has been doing in SD. I feel that GM’s are the most underratted part of a team’s success. Take a look at all of the perennial winners, they all have great GM’s. Coincidence? I think not. It’s been a while since I’ve been proud to say I’m a Falcons fan, but looks like I can say it proudly for the upcoming years. I hope they continue to build like this.

If we don’t turn the ball over we should win. Like Tennessee, Tampa is having some QB issues and since we beat Kitna last week, we should be able to beat Griese on Sunday. uh detroit has a cover 2 defense as well…and while tampa bay has better personnel to run it, it doesn’t make much sense to say Ryan will struggle this week just because of the scheme when its the same scheme he had success against last week…typical AJC, not knowing what they are talking about…

Offal is right. * A…N…A…L…Y….S…I…S. *

DOL, you rock! This is absolutely the best article I’ve ever read in the AJC Sports.

Here’s an odd question. With the implementation of the Defensive Helmet headsets, are all the teams usually using their Weak Side linebacker? I assumed this is part of the reason BVG is relying on Brooking and his experience, but the other games I watched on Sunday (not statistically accurate) also used WSLB

I guess Orlando needs to holla back at that game film from last week cause they don’t lie, so I think Ryan’s got the arm but to keep his poise will be the key.

After watching Gruden for a # of yrs., it seems his game plan is often overshadowed by some sort of personal agenda. Am I alone here?

If he gets behind, usually panic sets in and his game plan goes to hell. We need to stay out of 3rd & longs, jump on top early and run the ball down their throat. The 4th qtr. will belong to us if we do all that.

Go Falcons!

Scouts Inc.: This NFC South divisional matchup features the dynamic rushing attack of Falcons RBs Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood versus a Buccaneers defense that was embarrassed against the Saints. Expect Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin to load the box and force Atlanta to be one-dimensional through the air. Can Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey find ways to attack the Buccaneers’ back end with rookie QB Matt Ryan? Also, look for Tampa coach Jon Gruden to attack an Atlanta defense that can be exploited on the back end in one-on-one coverage. Falcons coach Mike Smith has done an outstanding job of changing the culture in Atlanta, but this is a critical home game for the Buccaneers because they can ill afford to start the season with two divisional losses.

Darryl, You’ve got to be kidding me with your assesment of Matt Ryan and DJ Shockley. If he was the best he would be playing. He didn’t get to start a preseason game because it was clear that Matt Ryan would win the job so the coaching staff wanted to get him as many reps as possible. DJ may have a strong arm but when it comes to accuracy he doesn’t have it. Don’t get me wrong I like DJ Shockley but Matt Ryan is the future and the best QB this team has. Oh and by the way, Vick will not be back with the Falcons and should not be back with the Falcons.

TB likes to get the ends up the field. If brooks doesn’t play, look for a flex TE package and a lot of zone blocking. This will allow the tackles to get to the weaker lb’s. Also, don’t be surprised if a good bit of the old counter trey is revived. This will stop the ends from coming upfield and make the lb’s stay at home. Bottom line. IF TB keeps 7 in the box, the falcons are going to pound it at them as long as they can. If they walk the SS up and load 8, then look for the passes a la holmgren. I would like to see them motion the fb and slip him up the middle like an H back to keep the bus guessing.

“We’ll know much more about the quarterback of the future after this game, than we did after that 13 pass outing against the meek Detroit Lions”

Not “much more” because no matter what the results are they’ll still be based on just these two games. However you’ve got to be crazy to not think that the Bucs are only one game into the season and there’s public turmoil in the locker room.

However the Falcons have to come out FIRST and throw the ball! Kiffin will kill you on 3rd and long. Robinson and Douglas can make up for not having the perfect TE but the ball has to get to them on the move.

In addition Norwood has to be used as Reggie Bush was last weekend. For Atlanta to win he MUST get the football. No matter what Griese has to get hit. Not neccesarily sacks but he has to be uncomfortable back there. Despite the three sacks against 10winsKitten last Sunday there were a ot of times that he had more than enough time to throw.

Also the special teams need at least one big play. If the Falcons have to start at the 20 or deeper in their zone they won’t win.

The Bucs would be crazy to not try and get Warrick Dunn on Brooking. He has to have a big game.

Joebrave, I’m a Diehard “Mike Vick” fan. And I am going nowhere either. I don’t support the falcons. I used too. Matt Ryan, nothing personal here, is just a average quarterback. There’s nothing special about him. Nothing which makes him stand out among other quarterbacks. His kind of quarterback comes “a dime a dozen.” Vick is special. He has special attributes which I’m sure I don’t have to go into here. Suffice to say, ask any NFL coach, team or player, whom they would least like to prepare or defend a game against and they all would say, Michael Vick. Last week’s game against the Lions, even Joey Harrington would have come looking like an hero. So don’t try to sell me on that hype about Matt Ryan, becaus “that dog don”t hunt.” I do however, believe in Coach Smith football philopshy. Ialway been an advocate of the running game first approach. He has the making of a good nucleus for any quarterback to become successful in.

REALITY CHECK-it appears you selected an appropriate name for yourself because you are in desperate need of your namesake. You obviously haven’t been keeping up with current events, because MVick hasn’t been replaced, he’s been imprisioned. Nobody, and I do mean nobody, is responsible for that but MVICK himself.

MRyan replaced Redmon as the starting Atlanta Falcons QB, not MVick. We’ve started our 2nd season since MVick last started a football gm. Your continued references to him is a reflexion of your lack or intelligence and/or an inability/refusal to deal with REALITY. In reality, REALITY CHECK, you are in desperate need of a REALITY CHECK. Try sticking to discussing intelligent, relevant Atlanta Falcons football.

TJ-what is your basis for stating DJ Shockey is a better QB for the Falcons than MRyan? Shockey hasn’t played a single regular season NFL gm and has spent most of his NFL career on IR. He’s started only one season of his 4yr college career, and for a team who’s OFF system has produce nothing more than backup QB’s, at best, since the days of Fran Tarkenton.

The Falcons, with MRyan established as the starting QB, have started the season 1-0 and will play last yrs NFC South champs tomorrow. And certain morons are still trying to make an issue of MVick and DJ Shockey not starting. You clowns are living proof that IGNORANCE IN NOT BLISS.

Tampa Bay has to worry more about us than we do about them. We are the ones with the dynamic rushing attack, they aren’t. We are the ones with the young, big, fast WR’s, they aren’t. We are the ones with the young rookie QB with potential they know nothing about, while they’re starting a backup who hasn’t been very successful in his NFL career. We’re the ones coming off a dominate win, while they’re coming off an emotional loss against a team that had no rushing attack.

Their DEF had trouble trying to stop RBush. So what makes anyone think it will be easier for them to stop Turner and Norwood. Too many of you are substituting wishful thinking for common sense and intelligence. MRyan hasn’t done a single thing, so far, to make an intelligent person think he’s average or will be a failure. That’s just your personal bias, wishful thinking and/or stupidity talking. Some of you are making the same stupid, biased assumptions about MRyan that confederate minded individuals made about MVick, and for the same dumb A$$ reasons. It’s stupid and unnecessary no matter who does it and a reflection of the bias and lack of intelligence of whoever does it. WHY DO YOU IDIOTS TRY AND GROW UP FOR A CHANGE?

TAMPA FAYE-your NFC South Champs just got their butts kicked by a team whose rushing attack consisted of a 203lb RB, and that’s a stretch. Your overall OFF has always been weak. You’re the only NFL team since the old Steelers that’s relied on their FB(Alcott) to be their primary rusher. You’ve gone through more QB’s than any other NFL team since winning the Superbowl. Your OL has been weak for so long, you’ve been unable to keep your RB’s or QB’s healthy. Your starting WR’s are past their prime and your DEF is nowhere near as good or as athletic or talented as the one that won the Superbowl. LB DBrooks is your only remaining truely athletic DEF player, and he’s on the down side of his career.

Any IGNORANT MORON, like you, can call another person an idiot. However, can that person give an intelligent and informed explanation regarding why they feel that way. Did you call me an idiot because I was right about your team losing? Wasn’t I right when I stated your DEF had trouble stopping RBush? Wasn’t I right when I said our WR’s are big, fast and young? Wasn’t I right when I said if your DEF had trouble stopping RBush they’ll have trouble stopping MTurner and JNorwood, a RB tandum that accumulated over 300yds rushing last Sunday?

MAYBE YOU SHOULD STAND IN FRONT OF A MIRROR, BECAUSE THAT WAY YOU CAN SEE THE REFLECTION OF A REAL LIVE IDIOT.

Last meeting Micheal Spurlock returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the first time in Bucs history, propelling Tampa Bay past the Falcons, 37-3, in Week 15 last year.

Streaks Tampa Bay has won the past two contests to extend its overall series lead to 17-12. Check out the historical matchup of the last five games.

Last week The Buccaneers had a late comeback attempt fall short in a 24-20 loss against the Saints in New Orleans. … The Falcons blasted the Lions, 34-21, in the debut of coach Mike Smith and QB Matt Ryan.

Keep your eye on … Buccaneers LB Cato June: Veteran Derrick Brooks left last week’s game with a hamstring injury, leaving the onus on June to make plays as the outside linebacker in Tampa’s zone defense. He will be counted on to help slow down Falcons rusher Michael Turner and also to disrupt Ryan’s timing in the passing game.

Buccaneers RB Warrick Dunn: After spending six seasons in Atlanta, Dunn returned to the Buccaneers in the offseason, the team he played for during his first five seasons. He will have added motivation going against his former Falcons teammates for the first time Sunday.

Ryan’s second start: On his first regular-season play as a professional, Ryan threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to Michael Jenkins. He continued to play well in the Falcons’ triumph over Detroit. His job will get tougher, however, against Tampa Bay’s difficult Cover 2 scheme.

Falcons DE John Abraham: The veteran pass rusher was nearly unstoppable against the Lions. He used a variety of moves to pressure Detroit QB Jon Kitna relentlessly and finished with three sacks. The Falcons are relying on him to do more of the same against Jon Gruden’s pass-happy offense.

Did you know? Under Gruden, the Bucs are 16-0 since 2002 when not committing a turnover. … Bucs DE Gaines Adams has had a at least one sack in both of his games vs. the Falcons. … Ryan is one of nine rookie starting QBs since 1970 to win on Kickoff Weekend. … Turner had a franchise-record 220 yards in his first game with the Falcons. It is the most rushing yards ever by a player making a debut with his team.

TAMPA BAY-since when did knowing what you’re talking about become sensitive? It’s called intelligent. And trust me, the number of gms you’ve won over the last 2 seasons will have as much influence on tomorrows gm as it had on the whipping you took last Sunday.

Right now, we’re a young, talented, although inexperienced, team that will improve over the yrs. Tampa Bay is a veteran team that’s leveled off and isn’t going to get much better until it brings in some young developing talent.

You are really reaching when you proudly state how DE Gaines Adams had 2 sacks in 2 gms against the Falcons last yr. Last yr the Falcons gave up 46 sacks, which is almost 3 per gm. This yr, you’re dealing with a new team, new OFF, new philosophy, new attitude, new coaching staff and a more talented team, especially at the OFF skill positions. Whoever starts at LB for the Bucs will have their hands full trying to stop our rushing attack.

TAMPA BAY-although I didn’t get to see the gm, I know a butt kicking wnen one happens. Congratulations to you and your Bucs on a solid win. Hopefully, our rookie QB will be better prepared to go against you next time.

Hey, Strickland, you’re abbreviating the word game to “gm?” Not only is it asinine, you’re only saving two letters! GM, in sports vernacular, is short for general manager, not game. Man, just when I thought stupidity had bottomed out in Atlanta, you prove me wrong.

Thanks for the laugh. Keep them coming, genius.

I can see the BOTTOM FEEDERS have taken over the blogs, so I’ll let them have it. It’s painfully obvious these ANAL MINDED MONKEYS can’t engage in an intelligent discussion of football, or likely any other subject, and are reduced to focusing on abbreviations. They’ve succeeded in bringing this blog down to their level, and that’s way too low for me, so good riddance.

Hey Stendec,

Keith Brooking wasn’t the one who botched the play on the long Earnest Graham TD- that was #1 pick Jamaal Anderson. If you watch the replay, moron, you will see Brooking was on the other side away from the play on that run. I will concede that he had a less than memorable performance yesterday, but don’t blame him on that TD run. That was all Jamaal Anderson with a complete whiff of an attempted arm tackle. And then a non-exist second tier of the defense. Brooking would have had to come from the other side to make the play. Go pay somebody a couple of bucks to teach you the game..

Well, that was the first painful lesson for a lot of Atlanta’s newcomers. I had a feeling Ryan would have a rough time against one of the better defensive teams in the division. And I knew they were going to force the Falcons to pass more than they prefer. It will happen again. Ryan absolutely stunk it up in the first half, but then got back to accurate passing in the second.

Thing is, he was hurried and hit quite a bit. But he never gave up. Didn’t hang his head and lose confidence. Didn’t lose confidence in throwing the ball. And he showed the ability to throw some decent passes while being on the run. And he was on the run a lot, because Tampa kept the pressure up, which was a smart thing to do with any quarterback, let alone a rookie.

I think some of the improvements in his passing the second half also had to do with different play calls and decisions by Ryan himself. He’s much better when asked to zip the ball to somebody than he is when dropping his shoulder and flinging it. I saw a lot of passes thrown high. I know he’ll get his touch under control, though. But for right now, he needs to do more short pass plays. Then again, you only learn by trying again and again. That’s one thing I like about Ryan for sure: he’ll keep at it, and he keeps coming back to the huddle with confidence. And he has to. It’s not like he can make himself feel better by going out there, abandoning the passing game, and bootlegging it to death….even if he could…Coach Smith wouldn’t go for that.

Except for that one running play by Graham, our defense was fairly stout. And yeah, that was on Jamal Anderson. He blew the assignment big time. This guy is looking more and more like a freakin’ bust…..

John Abraham was a frog’s hair away from getting to Griese all afternoon until he finally got him that one time. I don’t know about some of you, but I saw a whole lot more holding situations than were being called. And how about that series of calls the refs totally screwed up (until Mike Smith straightened them the hell out)? All I could think was “shoulda stayed at a Holiday Inn last night”, heh!

I think we’ll see some improvements and adjustments in the next game. We were very much in that game, with the exceptions of Ryan’s costly mistakes. Tampa made good on our turnovers (these can’t be repeated, Ryan has to learn QUICKLY how easy it is for guys to read and react, and in this case he practically threw it right to them). And we had issues scoring six in the red zone. Gotta do much better than that.

Who cares what DeAngelo Hall is making as long as the Falcons are not the ones footing the bill. You are an idiot Daryl and you must be unbiased bloggers cousin or something. Maybe his boyfriend, since his real boyfriend MV7 is no longer allowing conjugal visits at the prison. Looks like unbiased azzhole has learned to post under other names too. What you want to bet with all these trailer park references he lives in one and has a trailer trash wife to boot. Yeah i would bet thats the truth and he scares the hell out of the farm animals in the area too.

I just had to jump in the falcons blog. Say Milloy just got arrested for speeding while drunk. I can see the downfall already starting. I hope not. Milloy soild decisions as a NFL player. King Goddell doesn’t mess around, you better shape up.

Can Ryan beat the Cover 2?

If you don’t think that this is a MAJOR weakness for Ryan after the Tampa Bay game, he will see it again this week versus KC (two rookie corners at that).

I’m taking the Chiefs 17-6.
