Early returns favorable on D-Hall trade

It’s very early, but the Falcons’ trade of cornerback DeAngelo Hall to the Oakland Raiders is looking pretty good.

Hall would have been a free agent after this season and was demanding bushels of cash. He did make two Pro Bowls and played at a high level.

However, the Falcons balked at dumping cash on him and sent him packing for a second-round pick in 2008 and a fifth rounder in 2009. They used the second-round pick to help them move up to take left tackle Sam Baker and still have the fifth rounder.

If you stayed up Monday for the NFL doubleheader, you saw Hall getting worked out by Denver rookie Eddie Royal, from Hall’s beloved Virginia Tech.

Hey, maybe Royal is the next Steve Smith. But nonetheless Hall looked uninspired and played like a fat cat after getting his seven-year $67 million deal, with $24.5 million of it guaranteed.

There was some concern after the trade that the Falcons made a major mistake because there were no proven cornerbacks on the roster. Losing free agent signee Von Hutchins on the first day of training camp didn’t help.

Chris Houston and Brent Grimes, while getting beat on some plays against some very good Detroit receivers, played with a lot of spunk in the Falcons’ opener.

Rookie Chevis Jackson was also mixing it up in the nickel package and now they have to get the recently acquired Domonique Foxworth acclimated.

The position that looked like a major hole in the roster now seems manageable if Houston and Grimes keep playing with the same fire and desire.

Do you know where’s the “real” D. Hall? Was Eddie Royal his kryptonite? Did you pick up Royal in your fantasy league? Are you comfortable with Houston and Grimes yet or do you need to see more?

I’ve never been more happy that he’s gone. Hall is definitely one of the most over-hyped, overpaid players in the league and certainly my least favorite player, period. GOOD RIDDANCE

D-Hall got roasted, toasted and burnt to a crisp and I’m glade we traded him. I lost respect for the man when he cost us a game last year for running his mouth and getting i think 3 flags on one drive and then argueing with the coach when he was told to shut the hell up. Grimes and Houston are hard workers and i think they’ll hold there own… Great start to the season…GO FALCONS!

Never look back, whats done is done, thank goodness. The 2008’ Atlanta Falcons do not resemble the 2007 version. The new birds are for real and they play on a team that supports one another and I will bet you that they will support each other when the first loss comes. Go team.

Hall also had two 15 yard penalties, he did that to us last year and now he is doing it to the raiders. Im so glad he isnt here to be a cancer to this team. We dont need his stupid penalties for no reason, he looks good as a raider though, he fits well on that team.

I also am glad he was moved and Houston was allowed to earn his job. I think both Houston and Grimes will be ok, I loved their spunk also- that mentality of not hanging their heads low over a bad play and considering their first real game in a brand new system……playing against 2 guys who have massive amounts of talent(Williams a Pro-Bowler?) I think all 5 of our guys in the secondary played pretty well.(LOVED MILLOY AND COLEMAN TOO!!) Much better than when Hall was here. Foxworth should be a good backup at all 4 spots in the secondary(he’s got the experience at them all) and get some playing time. All the youth will sometimes have it’s growing pains, but I’ll trade that off for the fact of they are all hungry to play and want to win,not just make pro-bowls and pad their stats and wallets. I do like them all much, much better than what we’ve had in years past.To bad Hutchins got hurt. If a bad game does come along for either corner,I just hope we all remember the youth and allow them to actaully grow and get better instead of just hunting the next quick fix. I can see Houston being another AL Harris type of corner IMHO. Here’s to Chris Houston(OR ANYONE ELSE) taking a Griese pass to the house this sunday to redeem for our guys giving them their first ever kickoff return for a TD from last season.

In the short run its been a good trade. But more than anything it was clear that A) we weren’t going to pay him and B) He was going to be an absolute menace if we didn’t pay him, constantly taking shots at the organization.

So regardless of how D. Hall plays, I am glad we got something positive out of it, because we were going to have to get rid of him regardless.

I wish D. Hall the best, I really do. I just wish the Falcons a little bit better. He was a very good corner for us, we were all calling him one of the best in the league up until last year.

I really am just going to forget the last two years. I hold no grudges against any of the players on those teams, they were put in impossible positions. Its a little harder to forgive Bobby Petrino, but now he’s a rival SEC coach, so I don’t have to.

Hall never played at a high level, and you saw the real D-Hall the other night. My only hope is that getting called out by the Denver QB as the week link will finally give him some humility to actually bother to play the CB position.

Grimes really has a lot of work to do. I watched him in preseason and I was convinced he was going to get cut. He’s going to get beat a lot. He’s very small, but also fast. Chris Houston also needs to step it up. As long as we continue to stuff the run — GO GRADY JACKSON! — and pressure the QB, we are going to minimize the damage to our secondary. We’re occasionally going to get torched. BEAT THE BUCS Go Birds.

DeAngelo was/is talented, but he’s no longer a Falcon so I’m not wasting any tears. He may live to regret going to Raider Nation, no matter the $s.

I think TB is going to be a wake-up call. I mean, the romp that was Detroit… was Detroit. A victory would be incredible but not expected in TB. We’ll see if the pedal hits the metal on this next game. If we don’t get blown out, THAT is a good sign. Should we win, I’m going to start singing that “worst to first” song tho NOLA & CAR looked great.

I know Steve Smith ain’t too happy bout D.Hall bein gone. He can’t have career games twice a year anymore. He was an absolute disgrace to the #21. Grimes ain’t no worse then Hall was (or is). Hall wouldnt’ve been able to stop the TD pass to R. Williams either. It was a perfectly thrown pass only he could catch. Ledbetter, quit takin notes from T. Moore over there and let last year be least year. This Gets Old, you are absolutely right sir. hey theBurner4seven, shouldnt that be theBurner4six?

Tampa is bad. I think we beat them, and then KC. Then we’ll hit a tough stretch where we can see what the team is really made of.

I just hope we can steal one win in the 4 game stretch between KC and Oakland.

After Oakland the schedule turns BRUTAL again.

I look for 5 wins this year as what we should win, anything above that is gravy. To get to 5 we have to win the games we should win, but I think that will this team’s strength. The schedule is just brutal for long stretches. I think we’ll possibly finish ahead of Tampa in the division.

Anyway, what I look for from this team is to win enough to be positive and have a winning attitude going forward and then have a good draft and get ready to surprise people in year 2.

Its hard to say how good we really are with just one game behind us. How good (or bad) is Detroit? This week will be more of a measuring stick for us. Division rival on the road. Gonna be nice to see if we can stick to pounding the ball and executing like we did last week. If we win, I expect to have a better than 500 record in our division. Plus wins at home against KC and STL. One road win against OAK and we got 8 wins this year.

Grimes is too small to be great and cover Big(5’11” or bigger) receivers. He is like a Knat that is just annoying for a while but, then you just KILL HIM. I love the fact that this MAN(small in stature) made the team and plays with all his heart and talent but, we need 6’1” or better D Backs.

The secondary performed better than the stats indicate. Two of Abraham’s sacks came because of good coverage downfield. And how many times did you see Kitna check down & dump the ball over the middle for 5 yards? A couple of times he even tried to run. All of these are a result of tight coverage downfield.

Great trade for the Falcons. We were able to move up in the draft and select a solid OT as well as remove a team cancer. Yes we are thin at corner but this is not a Super Bowl contending team. We need a couple more drafts. I agree with comments about the spunk and attitude of our corners even though the “shut down” corner talent is missing.

are yall crazy, grimes is one of the best players on defense. small, but gives 100 percent. he deflected just about every pass that came his way in the preseason.I have big expectations for him this season.check the stats before you start taking shots. Its not all about height, he has tremendous speed, and can jump with the biggest receivers.

By FJR

September 10, 2008 2:52 PM | Link to this

@ Regan:

6’1” players with speed play wide reciever. Grimes is really small, but 6’1” corners are generally slow and don’t have the agility to keep up with elite WRs. WRs have the advantage, because they know where they are going, the DB has to react.

There are a HANDFUL of good 6’1” corners. Players like Deion Sanders are truly exceptional players. Saying we should have 6’1” corners or taller is just, well, it shows a lack of knowledge about the NFL.

Last year’s pro-bowl corners were:

Al Harris, 6’1” (he’s probably 6’0” and he’s huge for a corner)

Marcus Trufant, 5’11” (more like 5’10”)

Champ Bailey, 6’0” (again, probably 5’11”)

Asante Samuel, 5’10” (he might actually be 5’10”)

By your criteria, none of the 4 pro-bowl starters would be tall enough. The average NFL corner is 5’10”. players who are much taller than that are usually too slow and/or not agile enough. Players much shorter than that are Brent Grimes.

Yes, Grimes is slightly shorter than you’d ideally want, but aiming for 6’1” corners is both wishful thinking (not that many exist) and stupid (because other than a couple of them, 6’1” corners are slow and not agile).

I’d much rather have a corner that is right there, but gets outjumped because he’s too short than a corner who is 6’1” and gets blown by down the field. At least the short corner makes the QB have to put the ball on the money.

Me-Hall has always been a great athlete but has only been an average corner. He has terrible technique and tries to rely on his physical skills too much.

Plus we all know he has never been a TEAM player, it was hilarious watching him get owned Monday night. Then I read his comments the next day and the first thing out of his mouth is “we got out schemed”

Royal has already gone in my league. Dang.

I feel fine with Houston and Grimes as long as they keep playing like they have. Foxworth should add some depth and experience. We’ll see what he can do soon I guess.

Personally I’m glad he’s gone, he was a cheap, cheap wannabe of Deion Sanders. He could never cover the elite recievers, and when he kept getting beat by them, he would complain like a little b***! Just like how he wanted to go to a winning team but went to the raiders, lol what a dork! He went for the money obviously. I’m glad we have to corners that will adapt to the “Team” concept that the falcons coaches and front office are trying to instill in this team. To see D-Hall get abused by a rookie was the perfect justice, i just laughed at him the entire time i watched the game. I think I would take my chances with Houston and Grimes! SO LONG D-HALL!!!

Unlike a lot of people, I wont knock Meangelo. Sure he was selfish, but he was a team guy and is probably more talented than either of the current corners. But it probably was a good move, in that it would have been unlikely the Falcons would have opened there checkbook and paid him what he thought he was worth. And considering we ended up getting a starting LT, we came out pretty good in the deal.

What a puss vince young has turned out to be. His mommy was qouted as saying “my baby boy” is hurting right now because of the treatment from the fans. They booed mommy’s little boy after he threw two interceptions sunday and jeff fisher had to force him to go back into the game. Now it sounds like he is on a possible suicide watch as fisher had to call the police to make sure he was o.k. These great running QB’s who are stars of the college ranks just don’t transition to the NFL. Vince young, mike vick, tavarias Jackson, none of these guys can read defenses and make the correct throws in the NFL. Vince young is a big cry baby who will be out of the league in a few years. To be a great QB you must have thick skin like terry bradshaw. Pittsburg fans used to threaten to kill him his first few years in the league but ol bradshaw hung in there and won four championships before he was done. Got to have some grit and determination if you gonna play QB in the NFL.

D-Hall is going through a freefall and I hope he hits rock bottom by the time he comes crashing down. D-Hall is a no play bum on the football grid iron and a punk/thug/b******* in real life. He is a coward who gets his kicks by punking people off, getting in their face and starting crap with people. I dont understand why people keep comparing Hall with Deion Sanders when there is no comparison to Prime Time. Deion will be a hall of famer at cornerback, which is a lot more than you can say for Hall. Halls talents in no way shape or form can be compared to Deions. The amazing thing about Deion is that Deion played TWO professional sports, carving out an incredible HOF career in football while he was terrorizing major league pitchers and playing flawlessly on the baseball diamond.

Perhaps your comments would have some weight if you knew how to write and spell in English! You’re obviously barely literate and a racist to boot.

Go back to school and get that chip off your shoulder.

Oh yeah, posting the same thing 10 times REALLY makes your point intelligently. If I was as stupid as you I’d probably kill myself. What a waste of human life.

I’m going to miss the two-time a year roid rage contest between Steve Smith and Meangelo. 45 yards in penalties is okay, if Smith’s head can’t sit upright afterwards, without a brace. But, Meangelo was all mouth, no snaps.
