Big day at Flowery Branch

Thanks for all of the love on yesterday’s beat blog.

Today is going to be a big day at Flowery Branch.

Wednesday is a heavy-lifting day, as the Falcons will get in a major portion of their game plan for the Lions.

The local media also has a conference call with former Georgia Tech standout Calvin Johnson. Word out of the Motor City is that he’s blossoming into a major threat (as expected) in the passing game.

Johnson and Roy Williams figured to be a load for the Falcons young cornerbacks on Sunday. Now, with the addition of running back Rudi Johnson, they might even have a respectable running game.

Also, the new guys - Domonique Foxworth and Jamaal Fudge - will be available after practice.

Foxworth should be able to help immediately. I have to learn more about Fudge’s skills, other than he’s a good special teams players.

Just been trying to figure out how the Falcons are going to defend Johnson and Williams. Got any thoughts? Zone? Man? Double cover both of them?

Again, send along any questions as I plan to jump back in between interview sessions and practice today.

The Falcons have a good chance to win this game. The defense played great during the preseason to include DBs. I don’t see Detroit putting up no more than 17 points. Matt Ryan and that running game, LATE in the game, should put up 20 points. I see the Falcons Offense wearing down the Loins defense. Let get this party started right Falcons.

what the defense did in preseason aint gonna mean squat in the regular season, I just hope we can get a decent pass rush, and have ryan and co. run some long drives to control the clock, if abe can stay in the game, you know he’ll bring the pressure. time for jamaal and others to bring it, that will determine detroit’s passing success or not

Hey, all the Falcons need to do is sign some former Bulldog cornerbacks.

I mean, it’s not like any of the guys who covered Johnson from Georgia ever had any problem with him… right Bugs?

I mean, honestly, put the Falcons in red uniforms, put a former Bulldog at corner against Johnson, and he’s sure to come up real small, like he did for three years at Bugland.

It’s really not that hard to stop this guy.

“Real threat?”

How about, “Real laughable?”

It is my opinion that if we get a good rush on lions quarterback we can make him either throw ball to soon or to late. either way we win. The line we have should be able to adjust to Lions running game. Now our defense has always showed self with pride. My big question mark is our ability to score.

Two big time receivers?

Create more pressure to not allow the QB time to connect to these two receivers.

Look for heavy blitzes and stunts up front, the rest we will leave to our cover guys.

I’d say the best way to do it is don’t give up the big plays.. maybe give some short yardage stuff, but Don’t give up the big plays, bring blitzers if you can’t get pass rush with the front 4 and try to capitalize on mistakes.

ATL player, what have matt showed you, to make you believe he will put up 20 points this weekend? with All of those 3 yard passes it would take him 4 games to score 20 points.

We will need to get pressure on the QB, but tight coverage will go a long way towards winning this game.

Gotta get the running game rolling. Week in, week out, that’s gotta happen for this team to have a chance. This defense could duct tape a respectable season together if they’re not asked to play 40 min a game, but the longer they’re out there the worse it’s gonna get. If the runs going, that means more men in the box, more single coverage on the outside, better chance for Ryan and the receivers to hook up. Keep it simple, and like we say down low in the Dome, ROLL THEM CHAINS!

Uh, guys, what in the world does T. Moore have to do with this article or the proposed questions?

ANYWAY…

tom, I hate to state the obvious but…getting a rush on the quarterback hasn’t exactly been the Falcons forte. I agree that it’s a great way to put a dent in the passing game but it’s much easier for us to say than for the Falcons not named John Abraham to do.

Call me crazy, but I say let’s go man to man with safety help over the top. Grimes is susceptible to zone coverage & it could get ugly. Just my opinion!

I think they need to play in the nickel almost exclusively. They are going to attack through the air and we need to defend through the air. Thats the only way we can walk away from this with a w. GO BIRDS!

Want to make it easier to stop the pass? Stop the Run.

The Falcons need to control the run game and make Detroit face 3rd and 7 or higher. It’ll be significantly easier to stop long passes if we know its coming.

Falcons may have to implement the Tonya Harding defense :)

The team is young, just beginning to work together. They’ll experience some ‘growing pains’ this year. For the DET game, I just hope that, whatever the outcome of the game, they learn how to defend against premier WR’s and RB’s

Steve any word on Foxworth playing Sunday? Gotta play zone I say, hopefully there will be some sort of pass rush. Kitna is decent if given time, but we all know average at best under pressure. Would love to see the Falcons run the ball 45 times vs that D. Eat the clock and shorten the game. Less time to face R.Williams, Calvin and Furrey for the young, young corners we have. Should be a good game.

Bold:Bob Sacamano ——— You are an idiot. Fortunately for the obviously delusional, CJ came up ‘small’ because his QB earned Game MVP honors….for the UGAggers. Geez.

Normally, a team’s best player is negated by the opposition, not one of his own team mates.

Most UGA fans will tell that they handled Calvin with ease. What they won’t tell is that they were not at those games. They dropped the entire secondary back into coverage. They would triple and sometimes quadruple cover him. If you look back you will see that P.J. Daniels and Tarshard Choice had good rushing games against UGA with Calvin their. Don’t get me wrong CMR and his defense did a helluva job!

You know what, maybe I got off on the wrong foot. Let me tell everyone a little bit more about myself. I am a 28 year old douche at ugay. My major is social science and history education. Since I am 28 and back in college for this, you might be able to infer that I was completely unable to make it in the real world, and now im living with my parents, and going back to school to learn to teach. You know the old saying, if you can’t do, teach. Thats me. You can email me at expert40@uga.edu at any time, and talk to me. I really like films, I even consider myself a film “buff”. So we can talk about all the homosexual porn that you want. I need people to talk to, im so lonely. On a side note, 93 people have now read my blog!!! YAY! Thats almost 100 people reading the garbage that I write! I sure am special. Please email me at expert40@uga.edu to let me know how special I am.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I should not have said those things about Calvin because he is actually in the NFL making millions of dollars, while I’m stuck here at thUGA learning how to teach. I’m so jealous. Isn’t it a shame that none of those so-called shut down DB’s covering Calvin at Jawja were able to make an NFL team. You would think since they are so great some NFL scout would have surely drafted or signed one, so they could possibly step on an NFL field. Oh well, there’s always next year when UGA claims our 29th straight preseason mythical national championship!!! Don’t forget to read my blog!

Love,

Bob

By Ken Strickland

September 3, 2008 1:55 PM | Link to this

When a team has WR’s like Detroit’s, you play man DEF and commit to going after the QB. That forces the WR’s to run shorter and less complicated routes(which makes it much easier on your DB’s) and forces the QB to make quicker decisions and throw quicker more accurate passes. This also puts more pressure on the QB to make quicker reads on the DEF and his WR’s. Forcing shorter, quicker passes gives the DL and LB’s a better chance to knock the ball down at or near the line of scrimmage.

I don’t care how big, fast and/or talented a WR’s is, the QB still has to put the ball where he can catch it and the other team can’t. You want to narrow that window as much as possible.

Also, stopping the run is important. If we can put them in a lot of 2nd/3rd down passing situations, we can substitute our more skilled pass rushers.

I can see the birds pulling this one out. Ryan will experience growing pains but I think he’ll be fine against a mediocre DET defense. If our D is as solid as they have been in the preseason (except for the secondary which is still very questionable at the corners), then we should be able to beat Detroit and take Kitna one step closer to another 10 win season for DET!!!LOL

I agree with welike… with not going zone. Grimes is a good cover man and might be able to hang with CJ on a couple plays. R. Williams wont be too tough. He’s kinda overrated. The key is Kitna. Pressure is manditory. If he gets the ball to CJ we are gonna have an uphill battle. He is the real deal. i’d like to see a 3-4 in there and get a LB or two around the edges since J. Anderson cant. Maybe Abe and Bab or Davis on the ends with big Grady to stuff and throw Lofton and Nicholas or Gilbert in there to help up the middle or drop into coverage. Brook or Boley can get some penetration. We will probably see alotta different looks on D. Maybe not see an actual 3-4, but it might be effective in gettin pressure on Kitna. I sure dont wanna see CJ hit us for 3 TD’s. Much as I love him, he aint in ATL no more. And yeah…Bob Sacamano is an idiot.

I would love to see a lot of blitzing and pressure on Kitna. I just get scared thinking of leaving either corner alone out there very often. It doesn’t help that I have zero confidence in Milloy or Rhodes to help, coverage isn’t their strenghts. Why is the Sacamano guy on this blog?

This is exactly why I’m scratchin my head about why we still got A. Harris and cut D. Stone. I guess Coach Smith saw some stuff we didn’t, but man it sure seemed like Stone was a big time hitter. We gotta hurt these guys soon as they touch the ball. Get ‘em off their game. Milloy, Coleman, Harris and DeCoud need to be ready to bang. C. Houston and C. Jackson too. Grimes is gonna have his hands full. I wanna see Abe or Boley just blast Kitna early. We gotta shake him. Then we only got 15 more.

Grimes did well in preseason, but I dont have faith in his skills for a complete game, against a true game plan. Thats a completely different situation. (Calvin Johnson will “Moss” him all day)

Biermann was good in preseason, the last game, but they have to start J. Anderson for the opener…$$$

Against our NFC Dirty rivals, Grimes should be able to hang, as long as our safeties dont lay down as in years past. but this game will be different. I’m gonna jump off the CJ bandwagon now and just hope we can contain him enuff to put up more points that they do. i really dont expect us to give up more than 20. I say 24-14 Birds. Turner or Norwood or both aughta rip off some good runs and I look for White and even as shady as he is Jenkins to have good YAC yards. If Ryan can hit Finn, Robinson and Douglas with short to midrange passes, we can move the ball. Norwood is also a big time threat catchin outta the backfield. Scoring wont be our problem. Keepin the Lions WR’s outta the end zone will be.

Hey Darryl, Everybody

Man o man these threads are just Great! I love the flaming, and will enter the fray with my $0.02 worth.

My first concern with Detroit is that Kitna has thrown for over 4k yds the past 2 seasons. so by that alone Kitna knows to take what the D gives him.

I think the key to the game will be for the DB’s in a cover 2 not Tampa 2 to JAM the wide outs at the line Big Time! That alone should give us a “percieved” Pass Rush. However this will leave the underneath open. That was how the Pats beat up on the league last year with Wes Welker.

Knowing that we wont be able to live on cover 2 and the Nickel package all day. Smitty and Gorder will have to devise some stunts (Looks like Nickel but it aint)

But all in all the D will need to stay focused on the BASICS and keep the game on fundamentals, like GA did with Tech.

Otherwise the game will become Ugly quick.

End o Rant ————— Flame Away

What is the real story behing Tony Taylor being cut? He is a young, high character player - supposedly just what the Falcon’s are trying to build the team with. I understand Lofton being 1 but to cut a guy that was #1 on the “updated” depth chart???? There is more to this story than meets the eye. All the good will they got by keeping DJ just went out the window for me.

Hey Scotty

Thanks for the welcome. GTFAN81 did make a good point about the coverage, but in the Pro’s its a different game. Sorry Mr Nobis it is not the same game unless you are Tommy Nobis.

Back on point , I dont know what CJ’s speed is these days, and in any case a T2 scheme might give him too much space, and is why I feel that the corners will have to stik em at the line and slow down the pace.

Will be nice to watch Lawyer dish out some brutality on the guy coming underneath!

4 quarters of in your face ball will do it.

DO NOT COUNT YOUR FALCONS BEFORE THEY HATCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By FJR

September 3, 2008 6:03 PM | Link to this

We first need to face a reality. We can’t cover CJ and Roy Williams at the same time.

It just can’t happen. We can take one away with a scheme for any given play, maybe, but not both. Not without leaving the TE and backs wide open for 8 yard gains on every play.

So we basically have to gamble. We send 6+ a LOT and just hope that kitna throws a pick under pressure and doesn’t hit a big play.

We cannot win this game without winning the turnover war, and we can’t win the turnover war without forcing some turnovers through pressure. Our defense isn’t going to be able to sit back in cover 2 and force three and outs.

We may very well get burnt repeatedly on big plays, but we’ll get burnt on big plays in cover two as well. Does anybody really think that megatron won’t win every single catchable deep ball thrown his way if Kitna can sit there without major pressure?

On offense, just keep on schedule. That means most of all, NO STUPID PENALTIES! This has repeatedly kept our offense from functioning in the preaseason. I think Matt will be a good QB this year, but he isn’t the kind of guy that can repeatedly get us out of 1st and 20s and 1st and 15s and 2nd and 10, etc. We can take shots downfield on favorable downs (2nd and less than 6, 1st and 10 around the 50, etc) but they need to be limited to just those downs. If we keep the offense in rhthym, the big plays will just happen without having to take a ton of shots. But the main thing is just STAY on schedule offensively 1st and 10 -> 2nd and 5 -> 3rd and 2 -> 1st and 10.

Q: How do you defend against Johnson and Williams? A: Put Kitna on his *ss.

By Traceman

September 4, 2008 11:31 AM | Link to this

Ken, there is no way in heck we can make a living trying to cover Johnson and Williams man to man. If we do that, Kitna won’t need time to throw, all he has to do is throw it up in the air and let the big Williams and the HUGE Johnson go up and get it over our much smaller DBs. That doesn’t even take into account that the only proven pash rushers we’ll have on the field Sunday are Abraham and Boley. Put Grimes and Houston man to man with those guys on a regular basis and Kitna might throw for 500 yards.

The Cover 2 is where it’s at this game. That means that we will have to stop the run with 7 but I think we have a much better chance of stopping an older, slower Rudi Johnson with 7 than we do of stopping Williams/Johnson in man to man coverage.

By terrell barron

September 4, 2008 12:07 PM | Link to this

Imagine how much better we could be if Jamal was half the player that Abraham is? All we have to do is disrupt the passer(Kitna). Pressure, sacks, batted down balls, etc.. If we can do that, we’ll have a chance to win. If not, it’s going to be a long day. Simple as that.
