Falcons get to 75 without making a cut

Flowery Branch - As expected, the Falcons didn’t have to make any major moves to reach today’s 75-man roster limit. In fact, they didn’t have to cut anyone at all.

Atlanta placed offensive tackle Renardo Foster on the reserve/physically unable to perform list and defensive tackle Trey Lewis on the reserve, non-football injury list to reach the NFL-mandated limit of 75. Both players are coming back from major knee operations.

Both players were already on similar injured lists, so, basically the Falcons just extended their time to heal.

Lewis and Foster will be out another six weeks, at which time they will have an additional 21 days to get healthy enough to play or be placed on injured reserve for the rest of the season. Foster probably has a better chance of returning this season since he tore his ACL early last season.

Lewis, who had been promoted to the starting nose tackle spot as a rookie, tore his ACL late in the season, then re-tore it this offseason walking down some steps.

The big cuts come Saturday, when rosters have to be trimmed to 53. QB D.J. Shockley, QB Joey Harrington, TE Martrez Milner, TB Jason Snelling, WR Brian Finneran, WR Adam Jennings and OG Kynan Forney are among some of the recognizable names on the bubble.

I love my dawgs but Milner is a goner. If you can’t get on the field and don’t have alot invested in the guy, its a bad combination.

If Pollard is able to show that he still has sufficient physical tools to play the game, then Milner is toast. And while I know they won’t do it, it seems that they don’t need 2 FBs. Ovie barely plays enough as it is. I’d rather keep Snelling and use him as an emergency FB if needed. If Turner goes down, I’m not trusting either Thomas Brown nor Norwood to convert a crucial 3rd and 2.

Finneran is a lock to make the roster. He is too good a player and has too good of a story to be cut.

The birds are going to need all the good PR they can get this year.

Why does McKay have a job in football and Dan Reeves does not?

DON”T assume Pollard is a lock to make this team; if he’s running on empty, then it could be a quick look and good bye.

That said Milner better get his act together!! Pressure is on; time to suck it up, show you “want it” and are a pro.

You’re trying to build something here so I think you keep the younger guys. Otherwise you end up having to fill that position with a younger guy in the future.

Seems a bit too control heavy if you bench or cut a better player because he’s been hurt. It’s an exceedingly violent game and guys are going to get hurt. As far as DJ/Harrington goes DJ is the one with upside. Plus Harrington makes a lot of money for a third QB. I think he’s the one that goes.

By ATLplayer

Keep Shockley, CUT HARRINGTON! Look…we know what Joey brings to the table; dink and donk. You can get that with both Ryan and Redman. Shockley brings a change of pace to the position. Plus Shockley hasn’t fully displayed his potential where as Harrington has. Harrington will take the birds no where; we saw that last year. Add to that, we saw it in Detroit and Miami. Keep WR Brian Finneran. He has a knack for getting open. CUT Jennings.

By Greg

PLEASE don’t cut Snelling. He’s the real deal, and he needs to be kept as trade bait at the very least. I’m not a UGA fan at all, but I agree that Shockley has some potential as a scrambler, while Joey is Chris light. Sadly, Joey should go. Finneran also should be kept, if he realy is completely healed. He’s tough and smart and 6’5. A great target, who knows how to get open even without blazing speed, and who tends to make the catch in tough situations. Jennings looked good last week, but there’s a lot of mediocrity behind that. I think I’d keep him and try to trade him. Milner is gone: if they hadn’t seen something better in Pollard they wouldn’t have signed him (at this point, they didn’t sign him for a tryout). Forney has been average at best for years and is prone to false starts. I say, knowing this is controversial, that he goes. Dahl is more aggressive and the others can play more positions. Here’s the sleeper of the pre-season: Mughelli gets cut (I know, I know) and the Birds keep Brown AND Snelling! You heard it here first.

If you get down to your 3rd QB who would you rather have - Harrington or Shockley? Harrington has been a bust for a #3 pick, but he gives the team a better chance to win. IF it’s all about minimizing the hard cost associated with the 3rd QB, then you keep Shockley.

Bottom line - there is not too much more to it. Neither player is going to be more than a spot starter in this league (and that is being kind to Shockley).

Shockley was a good college player, but it does not look like he’s going to be an NFL caliber starting QB. He has nothing to be ashamed of; he had a very good college career.

Mughelli doesn’t get cut! Are you kidding? He’s the road grader type fullback that the falcons need to make their power running game work. Either brown or snelling will be cut and thats unfortunate because both have shown some ability. Maybe the one who gets cut can pass thru waivers and be placed on the practice squad.

I am in the camp to keep shockley and let harrington go. I hope DJ gets some decent playing time at Baltimore and plays well enough so he can secure a spot. If not hopefully he can pass thru waivers as well and be put on the practice squad.

the starting qb will be where the money is (72 mil) not the most talented. Ryan will be the starter because that is what the falcons need to cover their over paying for a rookie qb. when Shockley played with the first team last year he was very impressive. Too bad he was not given an equal chance this year. the reason is he is a better qb than ryan and the staff knowing where their bread is buttered would not give him a chance to show up the team`s top pick. anyone disagreeing with this evaluation is exposing his prejudice or ignorance. which one is yours?

I wouldn’t be too surprised if the Falcons keep Joey over DJ. Shockley’s change of pace is not what a team searching for some consistency needs. Joey’s short, pocket passing and conservative game management approach (however marginal in quality it may be), is more like the scheme Ryan has been asked to execute so far. Then again, if we are ever down to our third QB, we’re toast anyway so it probably doesn’t matter. Hopefully Matt will get his chances to throw some deeper passes as he gets more comfortable with the Pro game. We’ll need it to help spread the field and keep the opposing D guessing a bit. If our D can continue keeping our opponents kicking field goals instead of scoring TD’s, we’ll shock a lot of people this year, myself included. GO FALCONS.

Ok let’s make this real simple. Harrington has been a bust that’s true. With that said Joe Montana, Mike Vick, Dan Marino who ever would have been a bust behind the HORRIBLE offensive lines of Detroit, Miami and Atlanta. Until Ryan (68%) was allow to play longer in the last game, Harrington was the highest rated QB on the team 92.6% 2 tochdowns and 0 interceptions. Shockley (5.6%) has not had enough time with the first team offense but that’s the way it goes sometimes. I wish them both well where ever they are playing. I say cut Redman (41%) and Keep Harrington and Shockley!

Kroy Biermann should start ahead of Jamaal! hehe - nah, not really. But he should certainly be retained and brought in as change of pace behind Jamaal - for sure. This dude is a beast and will continue to get better. INTENSE!

Whoever above mentioned Ovie being cut is insane. The guy could block a mack truck thru a demo derby! Plus, the guy, being as big as he is can still get down field to make a play on special teams - keep your eyes on this guy!

Jennings can go somewhere else, seems like a good runner in practice, he just cant make it happen in the game - Shell Shocked or somthing…

On another note: I still cant believe my man Osi is down for the year…NO!

I am telling you, if they cut Finn, I am DONE DONE DONE…it would be one thing if he was physically unable to do it but he’s proven he can & he will provide invaluable production (given the opportunity) on both offense & special teams as well as leadership & character. You can’t cut that!!! Jennings can go…as for QB, it’s a tough situation. If Ryan went down, who do you want running this team? Joey. 3rd stringer, scout team QB should be DJ. Sorry Redman, you are out. You are superfluous. This defense is still worriesome, who’s rushing the passer besides Abe? Not the human roadkill on the other side, that’s for sure! We’ll need some linebacker & corner blitzes…

I hope Snelling stays. He has great vision and cutback abiulity in the zone blocking scheme (when we go that way). T. Brown looks good, too. I still am not sold on Jennings.

Unless we keep 9 DLs, we are going to have to release somebody pretty decent (Abe, Grady, Davis, Anderson are locks - that leaves Biermann, Morehead, Babs, Stanley, Moore, Evans - 2 of these guys won;t make the team.)

Also, pick 3 (m/b 4) among Adams, DeCoud, Harris, Cooper, Irons, Stone and Fontenot. Tough to do.

We got some serious beasts at linebacker. Watch for Stephen Nichols. He’s gonna be a bad mamma jamma. We need to go to a 3-4 with our depth. Keep Biermann too. He’s the next Kerney. Good pick there. I say keep Snelling and Brown and cut Jennings. Why aint Norwood returning ko’s or punts? How bout my theory…Shock at #2 and cut both Redman and Harrington. Pick up a #3 somewhere else. Can we do worse? Both those guys are prototypical backups. neither one is a starter for anybody for 16 games. We should be able to keep 3 TE’s so Milner should stay. Finn should stay too. 8TheManMike* I only mean there’s gonna be more of the same available that didn’t sit out of football for a couple years before Petrino decided to resurrect his career cuz they were cool at Louisville. Or Harrington who simply needs to just get out of a Falcons jersey. Period. a real veteran would be great. I just dont beleive either one of those guys bring real veteran leadership or teaching skills to the table. If you haven’t learned, how can you teach? Thats what I’m trying to say without getting too longwinded. So my question still remains…Can we do worse?

I think Shockley is likely to be the odd man out at QB. Personally, however, I would release Harrington. The #3 guy only has to carry a clipboard and DJ can do it for way less $$$ than Harrington. Plus, we all know what Harrington can (and most importantly can’t) do, while with DJ, we really don’t know yet.

It’s really hard to decide what Smith will decide on the Shockey vs Harrington situation. I can make a case for either one. If it’s a matter of money, Harrington gets cut. If it’s a matter of experience, especially as a starter, Shockey gets cut. If we keep Shockey, Redmon will be the only experienced QB on the roster. I don’t think Shockey will make it through waivers, so the practice squad is out.

The same holds true for the Brown vs Snelling RB situation. If you keep Snelling, you can maintain a power runnning attack if Turner goes down. If you keep Brown, you have more speed and versatility. You also have insurance for your return gm if AJennings goes down. I don’t think either player will make it through waivers, so the practice squad is out. It’s not just a matter of maintaining our power running gm if Turner goes down, it’s also about maintaining an effective return gm if Jenning goes down. It’s a lot easier to find a power RB like Snelling on somebody’s practice squad than a quick, fast, versatile RB like Brown. These are factors most of you aren’t considering when making your RB or QB preferences.

With astute play calling and consistent OL development, along with our abundance of talent at the skill positions, our OFF will be productive. Our DB’s and LB’s seem to be very strong. It’s our DL that will decide how far this team will go. I believe our run DEF will be very effective. It’s our pass rush that’s the question mark. If it’s effective, the Falcons will not be pushovers for anybody, and will kick some butts in the NFC South. I’m looking forward to the RETURN OF THE DIRTY BIRDS. GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like to hear ‘Dirty Birds’ again. What a nice ring it has. Linebackers and secondary should be solid (finally). Keep D. Stone. Hard hitter. Very important. Our schedule couldn’t be better for a ‘rebuilding year’. Only real threat to our secondary besides Steve Smith is Mr. Johnson week 1. Thats if the QB can hit him. The Saints might show up this year and they might not. Opposing receivers…KC, Minn, Philly, Oak, Stl, Den, Chi, GB, SD not much of a threat. Plus no D Hall!! C’mon B. Grimes! We just gotta wake up J. Anderson or demote him. Can anybody say ‘Chauncey Davis’.

I was never a fan of Milner despite been a big time fan of the Dawgs, but despite how I felt about him as a Dawg, I think it wiser to keep him over Pollard. I don’t think Seattle Seahawks, and Detroit Lions do not know talent or had too many on their rosters when they both did not resign mr. Pollard. Furthermore we are not going to win this year, so why bring in an over the hill TE and pay him more than an up and coming player. Having said that I think he will not survive the cut. I would like to see both Snelling and Brown make the cut, four RB’s is not too many to carry as they can also play on Special Team. Finneran should make the cut as the fifth WR. It might seem to contradict what I said earlier about not keeping an older player at the expense of a younger player, but he brings so much to the team. Shockley should survive the cut for one reason and that is because Matt Ryan has proven good enough to get the start. With Ryan starting there will be no point keeping two veteran backups, it would be wiser to keep Redman as number two while Shockley develops, then next year if he progresses to the satisfaction of the coaches, they could move him to number two or try to trade him. My prediction is that they will win six games and finish last in the division, but I will take that, because I believe we are building something special here. We just need continuity with the Coaches and front ofice personnel, which coupled with our great owner means great years ahead.

Um, yea, I think it is inconceivable that this team makes the playoffs.

That is why the player selection is more compelling that it usually is. I would rather lose with guys I like (Milner, Brown and Shockley (at least at #3 QB)) than with guys I have no idea who they are and will be replaced as a matter of course anyway. All things being equal, go with the local guy and build fan interest.

Milner or Pollard? Pollard is just a position placeholder. Keep Milner, why not.

Brown or Snelling - Brown is more versitile, but not all that shifty or power-oriented. Will come down to who is the best special teams player. Keep Brown, neither is likely to be a big contributor one way or the other.

Shockley or Harrington - If we have to depend on the #3 QB, we have bigger issues. Shockley can carry the clipboard for way less $$$ than Harrington and the fans like him. Plus Harrington has proven he can’t do the job. Shockley has not been given an opportunity to prove anything.

By Hamp

August 27, 2008 5:02 PM | Link to this

You have to keep snelling I am a huge dawg fan and I hope brown is retained. But If you are going to employ a power running game you will need another big back. this staff is gonna want turner to carry it 300 times which lends to a higer risk of injury Norwood will always be fresh but he is not gonna run anybody over like the scheme calls for. CUT JENNING AND KEEP BROWN, between him and douglas that is your return game.

By Ken Strickland

August 27, 2008 5:24 PM | Link to this

Everyone keeps saying Harrington hasn’t proven anything. When has he really been put in a situation where he could prove anything, other than he can take a licking and keep on ticking. Just look at the situations of the 3 teams he’s played for(Detroit, Miami and Atlanta). Name another QB that has done, or could have done, any better. I love the fact he’s always positive and is willing to do whatever it takes to help his team. He’s about the only player from last yrs fiasco that got screwed and didn’t openly complain.

I believe he’s a lot better than the situations he’s had to deal with. How many different systems, HC’s and OC’s has he dealt with. He’s had to deal with 2 systems, HC’s and OC’s in just one season with the Falcons. Let’s face it, he’s not as bad as a lot of you want to believe, and Shockey isn’t as ready as a lot of you want to believe. Certainly you UGA fans can be supportive of your team and its players without being totally rediculous, as some of you are.

You can play the rival card via Tech-GA, blowhards can play the race angle, or the “Turk” angle…which is the one ALL Falcon fans fear! After Gen. Sherman, the 1981 Playoff debacle with Dallas, the worst Atlanta franchise goof, was Bret Favre! Shockley can have two bum knees, a way-ward cannon of an arm, and tunnel vision like a covered bridge, but, but, all of that ceases to exist when he is cut and sent packing by the Falcons! That is what WE ALL fear the most!!! He morphs into a franchise QB with ANOTHER team and dearest Atlanta becomes another NFL success story footnote!

By keefer

August 27, 2008 5:40 PM | Link to this

Shockley should be the #3 QB, Harrington should go. Why? First, salary. Harrington would probably be the highest paid #3 in the NFL. Second, it’s the right thing to do. There are some teams out there that could seriously use a Joey Harrington… the Chiefs come to mind. Let the man go and have a fair shot at selling his services on the free agent market. I doubt he wants to be a #3, so cutting him would be doing him a favor.

Snelling is the better option at RB. Milner has more upside than Pollard. Finneran has earned a spot on this roster by the sheer fact of the countless hours of sweat and rehab it took just to get healthy again. Forney has probably lost his job to Dahl.

By DOTHAN

August 27, 2008 5:47 PM | Link to this

If the Falcons can get something for Harrington like another big, solid D-lineman since they passed on Dorsey, trade him. But don’t cut him. He’s not as bad as he’s made out to be and he is the most experienced QB on the roster. He hasn’t gotten much work in the preseason either and the O- line seems to be playing better than it did last year when Petrino was here when he started a few games.

I love D.J.’s attitude and character. I’d love to have him teach my kids or grandkids, but I don’t want him as my NFL quarterback. Mark Richt had a reason for keeping him #2. I do think Thomas Jones could do a bang up job as a full time returner and Jennings should be let go. There are enough receivers he’s just not needed.

By talent scout

August 27, 2008 8:02 PM | Link to this

Dennis— Yes Coach Richt had a reason for keeping DJ on - bench - it was David Greene. However when given the chance he peformed just about as good as Greene. I personally think he is better than either Redmond or Joey but the main thing is I watch the game for enjoyment. I enjoy watching DJ play than more than the other QBs and his talent is superior to his competetion. And another thing - what is wrong with someone having character? If our former QB had some he might still be in Atlanta instead of Kansas. ROAN ST sorry to ruffle your hood but your use of Hitler answers the question about you. Bless you anyway.

By Dennis

August 27, 2008 9:56 PM | Link to this

T.S. - go back and read my post again and tell me where I said there was anything wrong with having character. I didn’t. I believe I applauded him for having it. I wouldn’t trust my grandkids to one who didn’t. This is not a popularity show for the locals, even if they have some bit of talent. I went to the first game the Falcons ever played and have been bleeding with them ever since. I am also a UGA fan, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the talent of one from Tech, like Brooking. I try to be objective and only want to keep those who give us the best shot to win if they’re called on. I trust that when the time comes, Coach Smith and his crew will make the right choice. D.J.’s numbers are miserable this year, and that’s a fact that no one can argue with. Harrington is not the greatest QB in the NFL, but then he’s never been surrounded by anything close to a good team. A bad team can only hurt a good QB, but a great team can make even a ho-hum QB shine. Example: look at the wasted Heisman given to Gino Torretta. That Miami team would have made any QB look good. Thanks for the blessings. I need all the help I can get. :-)

Joey H is not as stout as the others, so we keep DJ. But DJ is really far back as a really good QB in the NFL. He has to learn to stop running around, has to learn to read defenses, Learn that a hard 100 mph pass is not necessary, and learn from Ryan how to throw a “touch” pass. As this takes time, we will hope that Ryan and Redman can control things until DJ comes of age, mentally over physically.

Calm down TB. I only meant keeping Brown would give us more flexibility. He’d also provide insurance if Jennings is retained as our return man and becomes injured or reverts back to his habit of fair catching everything. I think they don’t want Norwood returning kicks because they intend to use him much more in our OFF, like the Bears are doing with DHester.

I’m really looking forward to seeing how our DEF will respond against top competition. I want to see how much of an improvement having a strong hardhitting MLB(Lofton) and moving Brookings to his natural position can have against the run. I also want to see how effective our pass rush will be, especially when we switch to the 3/4 DEF. I wonder if DT GJackson will play in this gm. If so, we’ll get to see our entire starting DEF in action.

I think you keep Shockley simply because he has upside and could be worth something in return when he displays his upside. Ryan is the future. Harrington is a nice guy, but no team is going to give up anything to get him. Shockley could be worth some draft picks etc in the future.

The Schockley/Harrington decision comes down to experience and skill, not abilities or talent. In the end, Harrington has had the time and experience to know how to at least read a defense. Shockley, whether you consider it fair or not, hasn’t had the play time.

So, give D.J. his walking papers, hand Joey the clipboard and hope like hell that he never has to put it down.

I don’t know what to say about some of the rediculous attitudes and comments concerning individual players making the roster. It seems some of you are more concerned with individual players than the team as a whole, and that’s stupid. The really pitiful part is you are arguing about backup players, not starters.

I seem to be one of the few willing to talk about our OL, DL, DB’s and our strong, deep core of WR’s, RB’s and LB’S. Most of the discussions/arguments seem to be centered around who should be our 2nd and 3rd sting QB’s(DJ/Harrington/Redman), RB’s(Snelling/Brown)and WR’s(Finneran/Jennings). We’re 10 days from the season opener and there seems to be less concern about the frontline players than which player(s)are backing them up, especially if it’s someone from the UGA.

COME ON PEOPLE, since when did the UGA become a bastion for NFL QB’s? Your team/program has consistently been unable to produce a quality QB capable of starting in the NFL since Fran Tarkenten. Why in he11 do you think one with only one(1)yr of starting experience since high school will be more successful in the NFL than those before him who had 3 to 4yrs of starting experience? DOES THAT MAKE ANY SENSE TO YOU UGA FANATICS?

Let me put this another way. If he couldn’t unseat David Green in college, who has warmed the bench his entire NFL career, what makes DJ so great all of a sudden at the NFL level(especially since he’s been injured most of his NFL career).

I looky into me magic crystal ball, and I see the starter, it is Matt Ryan, he will get hurt in tonights final Pre-season game against Baltimore on the very first offensive snap. Oh what a shame, then, the Falcons have no choice but to let the black guy from UGA come in and finish up the game… That black guy is going to rush for 75 yards, and pass for 250 yards with 3 tds total.. 1 rushing, and 2 passing. They are going to beat baltimore 35- 17.. Too bad for the Falcons, Matt Ryan will be back to start the first game of the season this year, while the black guy gets cut and then signs with Tampa Bay. The Falcons are going to lose miserably this year, and a few more years to come…. the Bucs however, will wind up starting that Black guy later this year, where he will win the rest of the games for the seasons, and carrying that team to a NFC championship!!

Shockely didnt get a fair chane at the starters job. Demitroff and Smith pre-ordained Matt (Chris Miller) Ryan the starter. Now next year mid-season and the year after that we will be looking for another QB because he is not pro material. Then on top of that Shock would fill up sits at the dome. I hope the birds cut him so he will have a chane on another team. I wouldnt be able to stand him having mop up duty at the end of the year after doing it all pre-season. What make anybody think Redmon and Harrington can play in the N.F.L.. They both have had plenty of chances. Then we put them on the depth chart in front of Shock. MAN PLEASE>

i dont even remember if i liked Shockley or not - but i know now that ive been reading all these blogs about shockley this, shockley that….Im tired of the dude. His name makes me vomit a little. the guy has never played in regular season, same as Ryan, yet you dumb arses think hes great. Shut up, and watch the game tonight. All this fair s** should stop now, no one ever said life was fair…The coaches are at practice with the guy everday, im sure they know if hes ready or not, or ever will be. All we see is the images and read the articles and see the games once a week. There are 6 other days in the week that this guy is with the team working…obviously hes not up to par. obviously hes not good enough at this point. obviously hes not beating anyone at the QB position - Ryan, Redman and Harrrington are playing better. Obviously.

You people are not smarter than the coaches are, whether your a Shockley fan or not. The coaches know the deal, they see the dude everyday. Give it a damned rest already. HEs not our starter, nor will he be right now. The guy is playing tonight, with the first teams…watch…learn….and shut up.

We know who our starter is, and we know who our backup ISNT - so move on and talk about somthing that matters. Talk about the players PLAYING! The players who EARNED spots to start. The players who will be winning or losing for this team, not the guys standing all year watching. You people are broken records…

Note: - “You people” = UGA/Shockley Fans who keep on and on and on and on. (I cant believe i have to even make note of those words, damn racists ruin everything for everyone. Your the reason FREEDOM doesnt work!)

It’s getting closer to game time. I’m hoping that Shockley plays well enough to make it hard to cut him. I think he has good upside and might bring us a good return on investment in a few years. And NO ONE can ever accuse me of being a UGA fan.

I see Ryan as being more like the second coming of Chris Chandler, not Chris Miller. He doesn’t have all of the great physical skills of some players, but he is a leader and can take a team places. I would rather have Ryan’s brain with his arm, than all of the physical talent of a recently incarcerated player who had more talent than anyone I’ve ever seen and didn’t have the brain to use it.

JAMAL-the truth hurts doesn’t it. Your respoonse, as crude and primitive as it was, shows you got my point.

ZONE3-Smith was hired to put together the best team possible with the talent he has available. WE ARE NOW 9 DAYS FROM OUR OPENING GM. THE COACHING STAFF HAS TO GET THE STARTING OFF AND DEF READY TO PERFORM AT MAX EFFICIENCY. THIS IS THE TIME THEY HAVE TO CONCENTRATE ON PREPARING THEIR FRONTLINE PLAYERS TO START THE SEASON, NOT CATER TO A BUNCH OF DILLUSIONAL UGA/SHOCKEY FATANICS OVER WHO GETS TO BE THE 3RD STRING QB.

At this point, Shockey staying or going won’t make a bit of difference in our won/loss record. He11, if you UGA fanatics want to see your players so badly, buy tickets to their gms and attend. Don’t bring that ignorance oto these blogs and try to turn this site into a UGA LOVE FEST. Him being selected as the 3rd string backup QB won’t be any different than him being on IR all of last yr. That’s the impact he’ll likely have.

Ken, I normally agree with most of what you say, but the fact is Shockley’s looked far more talented than both Harrington and Redman so far this preseason despite playing with “lineman” and “receivers” who’ll be lucky to get an invite to a local beer league. It’s happening again as we speak; Ryan inexplicably played the whole 1st quarter in what’s supposed to be Shockley’s 1st real chance and he gets not one single starting offensive lineman blocking for him. NOT ONE SNAP this preseason has he been given a chance with the first unit in what was supposed to be an open QB competition, and I’m genuinely surprised because this coaching staff has been very smart and very fair in every other respect.

You’re right; to an extent it doesn’t matter who gets the 3rd string job, so why not take the youngest guy with the most talent, strongest arm, hardest work ethic, lowest salary and the biggest fan following? Answer that question for me if you would; I’d love to hear an argument as to why Harrington should be getting paid more to sit on the bench in front of fewer fans on a team that is already short on exciting players.

GRINCH-I’m not questioning Shockey’s talent, character or committment. I’m just tired of UGA/Shockey fans making a battle for 3rd string QB a primary issue when we are about to start the regular season. This is the last preseason gm, and the last chance to get MRyan, the designated starter, some reps under gm conditions with and against the other teams 1st team. Yet, these UGA/Shockey fans are upset that Smith won’t take time away form MRyan, and the rest of his starters, to let Shockey make the team as the 3rd string backup. Now that’s totally rediculous.

Has anyone considered that Smith has seen enough of him in practice and on tape to have already decided. Maybe Smith doesn’t need to see him with the 1st team to make a decision. LET’S ALLOW OUR COACHING STAFF TO GET READY FOR THE OPENING GM OF THE UP COMING SEASON AND NOT GET BOGGED DOWN WITH SECOND AND THIRD TIER CONCERNS.

Prediction. If finneran doesn’t make the team he will be playing somewhere in the NL this season. 6’5” receivers who can get open and catch the ball in traffic are valuable commodities in this league. In fact I bet if finneran gets cut he will have several teams lining up for his services. No way I would keep another receiver just because he is maybe an adequate kick returner over finn. The man has proven he is back from the knee injuries and deserves to make the team.

Shockley looked pretty good tonight and I would have to keep him as the third string QB and let him continue to develop. Harrington is Mr. happy feet and holds on to the ball to long and takes to many sacks. I like how shock rolls out of the pocket and throws downfield. Got to keep him because Harrington can’t do anything that Ryan and Redman already do. Just my two cents.

Fair enough, Ken. You’re right; there are more important issues. The o-line looks much better than I expected; Dimitroff looking at Baker’s whole body of work instead of just his senior year seems to have paid dividends. But most of the credit must go to Beaudreau. Anyone else notice that McClure’s been listed as 286 his whole career and when they interviewed him tonight he was listed at 301? Good sign. Gibbs starved them to the point of weakness and told them to chop knees, and Beaudreau tells them to play at the weight they’re supposed to and just be nasty with good technique, and suddenly the same guys that sucked forever are actually not that bad. Imagine when we get some more real talent in here. I really like this entire coaching staff. Anyone notice how despite our supposed lack of talent on defense they don’t miss tackles EVER and have only given up two TD’s all preseason (and none since the first game)?

I’d hate to have to pick between Thomas Brown and Snelling; hopefully they cut Jennings and both make it.

Despite having a 2nd string OL and being pinned inside the 12 the first two possessions, I think Shock showed enough to get the job over Harrington tonight especially when salaries are considered. Harrington did what he always does; hold on to the ball to long, take sacks, make enough completions on three yard slants to make his % look good and have a positive attitude. I like the guy a bunch; but there’s just no place for him.

grinch-everyone knows OT Baker was coming off a serious injury last yr and still made 1st team All American, and for the 3rd time. And anyone that follows football knows USC OLinemen usually do very well in the pros. They’ve always run a pro style OFF with pro style blocking schemes and techniques. When they’re good, they’re good. Zone blocking certainly isn’t new to most of our OL. Trap blocking, which has been the Steelers mainstay since the days of Chuck Knoll requires both size, agility and quickness. Those attributes were prerequisites under Mora’s zone/cut blocking scheme.

It’s the performance of our DEF that’s exciting me. Keep teams out of the endzone and make them use clock to score. Then our OFF controls the clock, puts points on the board, and we win the close gms. With our soft schedule, along with our talent and the system we’re employing, I see us having a successful season.

Who says? They’re 6 OL from USC in the pros now counting Baker.

None of these guys [young Falcons] have played anybody yet. Factor in that because of the screwed up coaching situation the last SEVERAL years we really don’t know what our young vets can do. Who knows what Norwood will be? He’ll rip off a 60yrd TD and then sit on the bench forever.

I’m as big of a Falcon fan as anybody but this team, even in playoff seasons has never played a season of solid defensive football. Not to argue (there’s more than enough of that here for anybody) but we haven’t played a solid offense this entire preseason.

Just in our own division Sean Payton (N.O.) and Dan Henning (CAR) are master play callers with weapons. The thought of Matt Ryan having to go up against Tampa gives me nightmares. And love or hate Vick when we’ve played Panthers without him they’ve put a whuppin on us.

Realisticaly there is no one on the offense that you HAVE to stop to beat the Falcons and nobody that you have to account for on when attacking our defense.

While they’re not the worst team in the league by far, there’s really nobody that you can point to on either side of the ball that you can consistently count on to make a play.

Hopefully they’re headed in the right direction but life as a Falcon fan can be summed up in one encounter. On a flight from ATL to SFO a guy and I were both reading a book called AT DAWN WE SLEPT. Military history, about Pearl Harbor. Got to talking, he was an NFL assistant who’d just interviewed for the Falcon job. Didn’t think he’d get it.

His name was Mike Holmgren. The Falcons hired Jerry Glanville. 40+ years and before every one I have to sadly remind myself “They’re the Falcons” I’m still buying season tickets, I’ll never learn.

roan st agree with your two cents worth with one exception. I think Shockley should be the backup QB at the very least. Down the road he will surpass the 72 million dollar man. The reason - he has a better arm and is a lot more mobile than ryan. As you saw tonight ryan is no super QB. Ken do not get too excited about this team yet. The real games start soon and we will see if having a player to pull for and watch is important if the falcons flounder. Roan st - my apoligies for my remarks.

It would appear not EVERYONE knows, because the pundits were calling him (Baker) a reach in the first round when it happened. There was a whole bunch of “Yes, the Falcons obviously need o-line help but Baker’s got short arms and is injury prone; I don’t know that he’ll succeed at this level” kind of comments.

The defense has a couple of holes talent wise, but is going to be solid. They’re hungry and well coached. I’d be surprised if they weren’t in the top 20 in the NFL this year, at least in the red zone.

Grinch, NO we weren’t sitting together and I didn’t say so. AT DAWN WE SLEPT is not an obscure book, it was a best seller at the time. By the way the Falcons also reached an agreement with Terry Donohue to coach, announced it and he backed out because of the Smiths and this year was our second flirtation with Bill Parcells. Some of us have been around a long time.

And I didn’t write that the Falcons will “still suck” (I save the artful phrases for you)

The point of the post was that you can’t get too excited by this team. Top twenty on defense? What drug are you doing? Thanks for being a smart a$$ though it’s what makes this blog the thrill that it is.

Sorry, man; I suppose it’s easy to strike up conversations with people you’re flying with if you’re not sitting near each other. I do it all the time; when on my way to the bathroom I scan to see what people are reading and if it looks interesting I crawl across the aisle and sit in the laps of the people next to them and strike up a conversation about football because I know that’s what they’re thinking of when reading books about Pearl Harbor. Silly me for thinking you were implying you were sitting together; I’m sure you were just gathered around the water cooler of a 727.

Please quit trying to act like you’re anything but a common pessimistic troll on this incredibly negative blog. Of course teams have been running up the middle the last three years; I never said they weren’t. In case you haven’t noticed, there’s a new coaching staff in place, The Head Coach is well known for being an excellent defensive coordinator, a new defensive coordinator is in place, new DT’s (with the exception of Grady who’s stout against the run), a new MLB who can obviously lay the wood (if you bothered watching the game tonight), new FS and hard hitting backup SS and three new CB’s. So guess what; you’re point is completely invalid. But you probably knew that before you ever posted, because you’re likely some 20 year old jackass with nothing better to do than try to get a rise out of real falcons fans who have a little deserved optimism for this season. And if you’re really some middle aged guy who’s been watching the falcons for longer than a couple of seasons, please either jump on the bandwagon or take your buzz-killing negativity to a different city and team; we don’t need that here now. Time to move forward.

My post wasn’t about you. You act as if you’re somehow important enough that someone would have to trick. I don’t care what you think about me but the facts are facts. And the things that aren’t facts are opinions. I have mine you have yours.

I’m not one of those people who sit around and complain about TV blackouts. I buy tickets and real fans don’t jump on or off of a bandwagon. A new head coach? Hmmm, when’s the last time we had one of those? A new defensive coordinator? BVG is a first time PROFESSIONAL defensive coordinator and as much as I love SEC football I’m smart enough to see the differences.

Hey I hope that Lofton is an all-pro. If he is he should be the second straight all-pro drafted because we should have taken Willis last year. Grinch, strong defenses have strong pass rushes. Where’s ours? Who’s going to cover Smith and Colston and Galloway?

three new CB’s? Whose point does that prove more? Buzz kill? LOL! How old is that? You’re the grandpa. If the Falcons finish in the top 20 in D (and look up the last time that they did that) I will send you steaks for Xmas, I swear.

By the way I find it funny that you mention Grady Jackson because I remember on this very board last year after he was cut the GREAT MAJORITY of posters approved of it and on the Wyche blog and on the then Bird Gal blog kept calling him fat and overweight. Calling me negative is hilarious considering all of the race baiting and constant arguement over a player who’s in jail. QB D.J. Shockley and WR Brian Finneran “on the bubble” ?

Please..Finneran shined last week and this week as well….He has demonstrated his value.

D.J. has as well…He was able to sustain 2 scoring drives alst night when no other QB could do and in the previous preseason games when given the chance to play, demonstrated he is healthy, strong, and mentally able to do his job.

The Falcon organization might want to consider finding a strong #2 punter they may need one should the #1 and #2 QB’s continue to be unable to sustain scoring drives….At least Shockley gave our punter a much desrved rest.

By Hamad Meander

I believe the best move for the Falcons at this time is to keep Harrington, cut Shockley, keep Finneran, cut Jennings. The reason - the third QB on the roster is going to be holding the clipboard for the coach, and it’s easier to see Harrington in that job because he is taller. That way, Coach Smith won’t waste time looking for him between possessions.

Joey Harrington cannot get out of his own way! Only a timely penalty on one of his brain-dead interceptions allowed the Falcons to escape with a win. Harrington is a nice guy. The waste is also a loser, loser, LOSER! Another loser on a team of losers IS NOT what this franchise needs now or forevermore! Was I the only one that observed that rhe slow motion man resembled a pregnant elephant knee-deep in molasses whenever there was ANY KIND of pass rush? I do not condone a quarterback running all the time but I do like seeing one move to avert a pass rush. At least long enough to throw the ball away to avoid negative yardage! Ditch this pathetic untalented bum! Got sick of looking at him last season. Begin the new campaign anew. Without JH! Squa Tront!

GRINCH-Baker was considered a reach only because of questions related to his injury, not because of his talent or ability. Think about it, as valuable as OT are in the NFL, especially LT’s, do you think a 3 time 1st team All American LT from a major program would be considered a 1st rd reach if he was completely healthy? TWeiner is the equivalent of a LT because he was signed as a FA to provide the same type of protection for a L handed Mvick. I think that’s why the coaching staff has given him the starting RT slot instead of Clabo. They want to provide Ryan with max protection from outside pressure on both ends.

I’m not a college football fan and I don’t care where any of our players played. That being said, if you think for a fleeting second that Harrington is HALF the QB that Shockley is, please have your head examined and get on medication.

Harrington has had 6 yrs. to prove himself and he has failed miserable each time. So he has 6 yrs of experience….of ineptness! Shock moves better, is quicker and has a MUCH better arm than either Redman or Harrinton. Even with Shock playing with the scrubs, he still looked like he was on the verge of something. He just couldn’t get a receiver to catch the ball or have a line that blocked. You saw what happened when Harrington was dealt the same hand. The team moved BACKWARDS! All in all, Joey had 2 x sacks and 2 x interceptions (one nullified by a penalty). He simply can’t get out of the way of himself. He is slow, can’t get the ball downfield and looks like a cat in a dog pound.

The decision should be idiot proof by now, even for Falcon fans.

Yea, who really cares guys. 3rd QB…big whoop who makes it.

Snelling certainly made a case for himself last night. I mean, was it him, or was it just that our OLine busted so many holes open for him, or was it that the DLine of Balti just stunck it up? I duno, but he was running down hill all night. TBrown as well made some strides, i wouldnt want to make THAT decision - good luck.

MAN O MAN, Lofton is a monster isnt he? you see after he was blind sided after his stellar hit? the guy who hit him went down to the ground, not Lofton…Lofton was standing over him, looking down….wonder what he said?

KROY BIERMANN - I love this guy. Hes a beast, and you know what, Jamaal Anderson can sit. I said before Jamaal should start, but i duno now - Kroy is just a beast. Hope not, but again, didn’t see the game last night. Maybe he rose to the occasion. Finn should be in I would guess. TD catch. Weems or Weeks…whatever. He’s probably gone. And how bout L. Robinson? I saw a highlight and looked like he was a little shaky? C’mon, I need to know somethin fellas. Guess I could wait til tomorrow, but then I’d have to do some actual work while I’m at my office. That aint no fun on a Friday after a Tech and Dirty Bird win. Am I talking to myself?

THIS GETS OLD-you obviously misinterpreted my comments about USC OLinemen. I was referring to quality, not quantity. And over the yrs, they have produced some stellar OLinemen, as has Michigan.

As far as who’s responsible for Snellings outstanding performance is concerned, it’s the OL. Every RB we’ve placed behind them has done very well, including Norwood, Brown, Turner and Snelling. They are consistently getting the job done and teams are taking note of it. When Detroit’s DC sits down to devise his DEF scheme for next weeks opener, it will be centered around stopping our rushing attack, not going after Ryan. The more successful our rushing attack is, the more teams will have to commit to stopping it, which makes them more vulnerable to our passing attack.

You’re right, none of us knows what will happen because this is only preseason. But even though it is, teams can’t ignore what we’ve accomplished with our rushing attack or our DEF. Will we be able to continue this level of play during the regular season, only time will tell. Don’t be so quick to discount what we’ve been able to do during preseason. This is not the Falcons of McKay, Mora or Petrino. The abilities of this GM and coaching staff are light yrs ahead of either.

Still don’t think Harrington is a stinker? He threw two interceptions against the other team’s scrubs (one of which was negated). Shockley actually threw for a touchdown. What quarterback battle?

Ken, that would be the name of that tune. I like Smith’s business-like approach to the game. You won’t see him running around and trying to sneak up on his players with an ammonia vial halfway through the 3rd quarter…on national tv at that…

Scotty, Jennings is looking a bit better but he’s still not worth a roster spot. Thomas brown looked WAY better on returns last night.

Anderson is just overmatched. He only played one year of DE in college and his inexperience shows. Just like with Michael Jenkins, McKay got obsessed with his measurables and overpaid for him. Jenkins has first round measurables but is a solid # 3 or 4 receiver and no more functionally. Anderson is not much different from Chauncy Davis; he’s a reasonably solid run stuffer and would be a good guy to rotate in and out for depth. But as a 1st rounder, he’s a bust.

Forney just hasn’t been the same since he dislocated his shoulder twice in two or three games a couple of years back. I don’t know what’s up, but no way he makes the team with that salary as a backup. He’ll get cut, and Dimitroff will pick up a veteran this weekend for the league minimum.

This gets old, I’ve talked to plenty of people on airplanes, but only ones that were in talking distance which was my point. Forget it; it’s not worth arguing about. Of course the team still has holes; I’m just saying it looks better than I thought and I like the direction things are headed in. I’m also tired of hearing about #7 and how the Falcons will never go anywhere. Ok, I get it. I happen to think they will, and I don’t feel bad about being a positive person or loving and supporting my team.

I think as far as long term benefits, T.Brown and J. Snelling both stay and A. Jennings goes. And when I say long term, I mean the duration of this year and beyong. Jennings didn’t impress me last year nor does he this. Sucks for Jamaal, but if we see rotation that’ll put him inside every now and then, might work out okay. Our LB’s should provide the support we need. Safetys look solid for once. DB’s?? Besides Grimes, not sure who is gonna really become a difference maker. O-line is solid. RB’s are tight. WR’s, I guess R. White, M. Jenkins, B. Finn, and L. Robinson? TE’s are a little bit of a concern, and a critical roster spot too. We need one TE with hands. I’m optimistic with this team minus a few flaws. but all in all a good vibe. Coach Smith will make the right decisions with roster cuts, I’m confident of it (as long as Joey H. gets gone). And I predict a 500 season. Somebody i read was worried bout Tampa, but when it comes down to the NFC Dirty, its a battle royal no matter. Any given Sunday baby. We ain’t scared of no Bucs, Panthers or Saints. They need to be worried bout us, they aint seen our team yet. We brand new man! Dirty Birds baby!! Lets get us some wins this year and shut up the critics.

Preshate it terrell. I like Robinson. Oh yeah, H Douglass too. Reminds me a little of a Steve Smith type guy. Of course so does Roddy. So our two 6’ plus receivers are Mr. Butterworth and a white guy with bad knees. Its all good. I still love ‘em. Robinson might be a 6 footer. Anyways…Jamaal needs to step up fo real. I wanna see him do good, I really do. but Biermann and Davis are both good enuff to rotate. Long as Abe stays on the field. I figure Forney to be gone. Again I gotta say, i’m lovin the LB’s man. Brook, Boley, Lofton, Taylor and Nicholas are gonna be the difference in this team.

Cuts? Bye, Joey. Too expensive for workman like service, dude. Keep Shock, Brown, sign Martrez to taxi squad, hands are too suspect. Keep Snelling and rotate him in and out with Turner. Hang on to Forney. Snelling is a pounder especially late in the game. With Ryan learning, we need a stable or running backs to keep him out of long yardage situations, not that he can’t handle it. He just shouldn’t have to.

TERRELL BARRON-you’d better believe it, and welcome. Man, it’s good to have some additional character guys on these sites. I’m looking forward to discussing Falcon football, not fending off comments from a bunch of ANAL MINDED MORONS/RACISTS of all persuasions.

I have to admit. I was optimistic about our chances of being better than last yrs team. But at this point, our new GM and entire coaching staff has me raising my expectations considerably. They’re using a solid concept, and have done an excellent job of selling what they intend to do. Having an actual OL coach, especially one of the NFL’s best, has made a tremendous difference. He’s been very successful in catering the blocking scheme to suit the individual talents of each lineman. So far, they’ve been controlling the line of scrimmage and knocking people around.

Our DEF has controlled the run and kept the opposition out of the endzone and that’s without GJackson, our biggest and best run stuffer. If this team gets off on an early roll, they may not stop until the playoffs. It’s not like we have a formidable schedule.

I can’t believe you guys are attacking me because I’m saying lets be realistic. First Grinch, when I met Holmgren he wasn’t MIKE HOLMGREN, he was Mike Holmgren and he was “just” a QB coach. I didn’t even connect it until months later. There is a reason that I do meet a lot of people on flights but I won’t get into that. Last week I rode out of L.A. with an expert on top soil and went back with a bee virologist. All I can say is go to the Farmers Market and can lots of veggies.

Ken, I think that you remember WHY I became This Gets Old. It was because even when we were winning people were fighting and b***’ all of the time.

I’m not saying that Baker won’t be a player it’s just that as I wrote weeks ago the Falcons finally chose an O-lineman high when they took a QB high. But even you have to admit that Baker may not have been your first or even second choice.

I take the Falcons as what they say they are, a business. When I go to the game they don’t want my good intentions, they want my money and they get it. If anybody is in their twenties or thirties I can’t even count your complaints because you ain’t seen nothin’!

I’m glad that they have a plan. I wanted it to be clearly a plan that we could follow but so be it. When I look at this team I can see one unit where we might be above other teams in our division. That’s at RB, IF somebody FINALLY USES NORWOOD.

It does trouble me that they seem to want to take the TE out of the passing game, unless they’re keeping their powder dry.

You guys Peyton Manning had Faulk and Harrison when he was a rookie and they were 3-13. When Blank hired Jim Mora Jr. I was stunned, stunned! First year proved me wrong. Later on…

I never understood hiring Petrino and Smith yes is a surprise also. I see what they’re trying to do. Every time, first year coach, in preseason we do this. I have to see that it’s real, when it counts at least once. Nothing wrong with that.

Yeah Ken, Coach Smith has things looking a lot better around here. The key to the season is not Ryan, Turner, or the receivers. It’s the O-Line. I’ve also been impressed with their play. As a matter of fact, Baker and Dahl have impressed me more than any other players on the team. And that’s saying something. I for one, hated when we gave up a pick for Baker. Shows what I know. lol!! He’s looked great. So far that is. As far as cuts go, I can see Shockley staying over J.O.E.Y., for the simple fact that Ryan was named the starter. There’s no need to carry 2 vet. backups. Here’s a few more players that will probably get cut. G Keynon Forney(cap casualty), WR Adam”faircatch”Jennings(Douglass and Brown can handle kr/pr), S Erick Brock, CB Blue Adams, DT Tim Anderson, T Michael Butterworth, DE Willie Evans, TE Jason Rader, OL Terrence Pennington, LB Micahel Pimentel, WR Noriaki Kinoshita, CB Glen Sharpe, WR Eric Weems, C Ben Wilkerson, and LB Coy Wire. And the shocker of the day will be FB Ovie Mughelli.(He’s WAY overpaid) I say we keep Snelling instead and use him as emergency RB and FB.

By Dawgone

Wow… Just wow… Shockley has one thing going for him. He does bring a slight change of pace. He has a lot of fans because he did well for us at UGA. I can appreciate that and I’ll show him some Red and Black love. This isn’t the red and black though. This is Silver Red and Black and Birds not Dawgs. Shock hasn’t proven himself yet in this offense. He may never.

Quincey Carter reference is a joke. He played for the cowboys when they didn’t have crap as far as QB’s were concerned. Yeah Yeah… they got to the playoffs but was it Quincy or was it the defense and the rb’s + OL that got them there? Or maybe just maybe their division was crap that year? Open butt and remove your head plz.

Talent Scout. As a black man and a realist could you do me the honor of giving me your address. I am going to send you a gift certificate to the home depot so that you can go out to buy some rope and hang your da#n self. Your an idiot.

Keep Finn. Cut Jennings. Who cares about the 3rd Str QB. It’s unlikely anyone will pick up Shock if he gets cut but I can promise Harrington will be someone’s 2nd string QB within a day of being cut.

I seen snelling the other day… Beastly against that third team defense. Keep him cause I think he has some heart. T.Brown to do PR/KR and 4th string RB. He brings less to the table than Snelling much as I hate to admit.

Biermann is a beast. Someone needs to give Jamal A. a rabies shot so he can be half as mean as Biermann.

This gets old, Sorry that some of these folks have taken exception to your posts. I do not perceive you as being negative, or a “buzz killer”, but simply realistic. I, also have been a Falcons fan for a long time. We beat Houston 20-10 in 1972 at the first game i attended. I was at the 1973 MNF game when Bob Lee had the greatest scramble and TD pass (to Eddie Ray) in the history of MNF and we upset the mighty Vikings. However, I really have a great feel about our new coach and GM and believe that finally, this team is headed in the right direction. And as for this season, why do all the pundits at SI and ESPN expect us to finish somewhere between 0-16 and 3-13? Where exactly are we worse off than last year? QB - upgrade, OL, upgrade, DL about the same, backfield, upgrade, receivers, upgrade, linebackers, upgrade, DB’s talent downgrade scheme upgrade, coaching huge upgrade GM huge upgrade. I see us as being somewhere between 6-10 and 9-7. By the way, as a UGA class of ‘86 alumnus, the reason that we want Shock to make the team as the 3rd QB has nothing to do with the Falcons or how he will help the team. It is because of the class that he exhibited while in Athens, waiting his turn to lead our beloved Dawgs to the SEC championship. We would like to see him achieve success in the NFL and he does have a great arm and excellent mobility. He’s a class guy all the way.

Thanks oldbird! It’s funny but I was thinking about Eddie Ray today. That ‘73 team was one of the biggest heartbreakers in Falcon history. Remember they started out with like a 50 point win against the Saints? Went 8-3 looked like a playoff team and lost to the Bills and Cards.

The Falcons are far from the worst team in the league. Granted they had one of the most screwed up seasons of any team EVER! I mean whose starting QB ends up in prison?

I think that we’ve made some upgrades and I’m sorry that some people think that I’m negative but man people like us have seen it all when it comes to the Falcons. I’ve taught myself to never think that they’ll win. It’s less disappointing that way. All I want is for us to start one year, one, where we’re supposed to win…and then we go out and do it.

Why would you even consider cutting a guy like Shockley he’s mobile and hes young and change of pace type quarter like Cunningham in his younger days Harrington is Garbage he should have never even been resigned in the first place and why would you put your trust in Redman and Ryan he Ryan coundnt even handle the pressure on thursday when he was out there that would be very dumb to cut Shockley.. And on he far note you might as well cut Jennings because he have not showed anything on punt or kick return keep finneran because hes a veterans and they also have alot of other young talent on the roster for Wr keep Brown at the pr/kr and I tyhank Snelling is a better power plus speed tunner the Obie he can come in and back up Turner if he goes down because Norwood cant be trusted with his injury problems.

THIS GETS OLD-I feel you. It’s understandable for a Falcon fan to be a bit apprehensive considering our past. Actually, that’s part of the reason I’m so optimistic. Our recent history shows the 1st yr after hiring a new coach has proven to be very successful, Petrino excluded. The start of this season, the approach of the coaching staff and the system employed by them reminds me so much of DReeves 1st season. The difference is the talent level of this team is far ahead of what Reeves started out with. Even the way the team is being structured is very simular.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. This season just might signal the RETURN OF THE DIRTY BIRDS.

Let’s bring this back to the business of football. If the Falcons got down to the third string qb, history has told us that the “wheels have come off”. Now the top brass has to worry more about selling tickets than winning, let alone making the playoffs.

Shockley has not played a down in a regular season game, but he has a fan base. There’s a demand for his jersey. If fans are willing to pay $60.00 or more for his jersey, they would obviously pay less to see him start an NFL game. Even if it all fell apart quickly, there would be more of a “give the kid a chance” attitude by fans who came to see him play.

If Harrington takes over, there would be more of a “wait and see” or “here we go again” attitude by the fans. A large number of them would want to see the Falcons win before they even consider paying to see them play.

Harrington could be the backup on another team, but if the Falcons were willing to part with the likes of Dunn and Crumpler, as part of a new beginning, then parting with Harrington would be in order.

BIGXL-very good points and well presented. At any rate, we’ll know the fate of both QB’s, as well as the rest of the backups, sometime today. If Shockey is cut, we’ll have to go through the the backlash from all of these UGA/SHOCKEY fanatics. Once that passes, we can get back to reality.

Let’s stop being nasty. I’m not a UGA fan, but I can’t deny their program has been churning out some darn good football players, on both sides on the ball. However, QB has never been one of their programs’ strong suit. The problem seems to be getting some of their fans to realize the obvious.

I love this time of yr, from a sports perspective. Football season is underway, basketball season is around the corner, and both Atlanta teams are stocked with talent, potential and question marks. Coaching seems to be the Hawks’ weakness, and it seems to be the Falcons’ strength. Until the last two yrs, the Braves were the only ATL team we could look forward to and be proud of. Now, it’s the Hawks and Falcons, not the Braves, that’s giving us a positive outlook.

KRIS-I’m with you. I have no problem with Harrington. The thing that amazes me most about him is how he remains so confident and upbeat after getting killed playing on sorry teams and behind sorry OL’s in Detroit, Miami and here. If by chance Harrington does become the #2 QB, he could end up becoming a hero by saving the Falcons season if Ryan gets hurt.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, had any inclination DReevers’ Falcons were capable of going to the Superbowl that yr. And nobody could have possibly foreseen us having such a successful 1st season under JMora. But this season is different. This team has far and away more talent than either of those teams. It won’t be dependent upon the talents of a single player like those 2 teams were. This teams season might not be as successful as those teams were, but this team will be successful, and over a longer period of time.

TERRELL BARRON-I understand that and it’s not a problem. UGA fans and fanatics understand that as well. Otherwise, why make such a big issue over a UGA QB making the team as a 3nd string QB. We both understand the program doesn’t utilize a system that requires or produces top quality QB’s, especially at the NFL level. Therefore, UGA fans and fanatics should allow the Falcons to assemble their team based on what’s best for the team, not UGA fans and fanatics.

You have to admit, some of these fans are out of touch with reality. I read comments were they threatened to drop all support for the Falcons if Shockey wasn’t selected as the third (3rd) string QB. How sick is that. They are underwhelming as Falcon fans, and overwhelming as UGA fans.

Ken, I don’t tend to disagree with much you have to say but you’re support of Harrington is curious to say the least. I don’t care how much experience he has in the NFL his ceiling just isn’t very high. He’s been given ample opportunity to prove himself but has failed each time. How many chances does somebody deserve before it’s time to say game over? Harrington is slow of foot, holds on to the ball to long, takes to many sacks, and throws a bunch of INT’s. Experience or not that is a lousy combination of bad tendencies.

Shockley on the other hand, because of his ability to get out of the pocket, offers a different and unique skill set that our other QB’s don’t have. He’s very mobile, has a sneaky strong arm, intelligence, spectacular attitude, and a much higher upside than harrington. And this is a view not based on a fanatical UGA fan. Some teams in the league prefer to have a guy with upside as the #3 and that apparently will be the falcons approach. If you discount the year missed because of injury this will really be shockley’s second season. Given some more time to develop I predict he will be our back up QB as early as next season. Harrington? No way jose.

Tony Gilbert is the better ST player, but at backup LB, I like Taylor better. BUT, Gilbert knows Smith’s system. And did’nt he miss the 2007 season, due to injury? I hope he’s healthy. And I like the Justin Peele pickup. He was pretty good last year, albeit it was for a 1-15 team.

ROAN ST-I’m not a Harrington supporter, but neither am I a distractor. I understand what he’s had to go through. I know he hasn’t had a chance to show what he’s capable of doing with a team thathas an established OFF, coaching staff and/or a lot of talent. That’s too often the problem when you’re the top rated QB in the draft and you end up being drafted by the worst team/organization in the league.

Harrington has had the misfortune of playing for 3 of the NFL’s worst teams at a time when they were at their worst. I believe if he got a chance to play for a quality team, he’d give you quality results. The Falcons, at this point, aren’t that team. I wanted Shockey to make the team, but I felt it was silly to make an issue of it. I liked the change of pace he brings, especially in contrast to our other 2.

I’m suprised to see TTaylor cut, but they seem to have upgraded the position in doing so. His replacement seems to be bigger, stronger, knows the system and the league better and has far more experience. Something tells me this roster tweeking is just the beginning. I don’t think they’re through tweeking the TE, DT and DB positions. I also believe they intended to keep both RB’s Brown and Snelling. WE’RE GETTING CLOSE FALCON FANS.

I was a little shocked that Taylor was cut since not long ago he was competing for the starting job. Unless the coaching staff was using that as a tool to motivate lofton and not just had him the job. However, I do like the fact that finally the new regime likes the big hitting middle liebackers and not undersized out of postion guys in the middle. We haven’t had a stud at that position since the days of the Hammer. I’m very excited about Lofton because he has the size and lays the wood. He will definently help us in stopping the run.

Next season I look for Dimitroff to focus on our defensive line in the draft. Unfortunatley, he couldn’t do it all in one draft because there were to many holes to fill. However, I am very excited about this new regime of Dimitrooff and Smith and look forward to this season and beyond. There are going to be struggles and low points but I feel confident were heading in the right direction.

Hey Scott….Looks like it didn’t take the Ravens too long to pick up Joey. So much for Joey watching from home. As for “DJ”, he wasn’t good enough in college to beat out David Greene who has been holding a clipboard his entire career in the NFL. What makes anyone think “DJ” can do better in the NFL? Maybe “DJ” can do one of his patented “throw the ball away on fourth down” plays when he gets into the game. Let’s face it “DJ” was kept to appease the black fan base…it ain’t a UGA thing ….and I’m a UGA graduate.

CRABAPPLEJOE-are you really stupid enough to think Black people are jumping for joy because the Falcons kept Shockey as the #3 QB? Trust me, that idea exists only in your RACIST ANAL MENTALITY. IT’S AMAZING HOW THESE PRIMITIVE MINDED CLOWNS HAVE NO FEAR WHEN IT COMES TO SHOWING THE DEPTH OF THEIR IRNORANCE AND STUPIDY.

Bottomline, regardless of what color the Falcon QB’s are, there will likely be no more sellouts, unless the team starts winning and winning soon. Let’s hope some organization or corporation buys the remaining tickets.

Ken, Joey is running out of excuses. So what team would he succeed on? Patriots? I doubt it. No better than Cassel. How bout the Colts? Probably not? No better than Sorge. The guy just does’nt have IT. Period! And no need to respond to crabapple. That’s ridiculous. Your’re better than that Ken.

Come on Arthur Blank. Step up and buy those tickets yourself. Give em to some needy kids or something.

Actually the report that Harrington signed with the ravens is premature. Espn jumped the gun on that one. News out of baltimore is that either harrington or todd bouman could be signed this week. Nothing is official yet. But in any case the only reason harrington is getting a look is because of the dire straits that Baltimore is in with their QB situation. Kyle boller has a hurt shoulder and troy smith has some kind of viral infection that will keep both guys sidelined this weekend. They simply have to have someone to back up Flacco this weekend. Sheer desperation has forced them to calling harrington and nothing more.

I’m not excited about Shockley staying. I am however, glad that Harrington is gone. I hope Shockley shows us something if and when he’s needed. In a perfect world, he’s not needed, but a perfect world we do not live in.

I figure the coaching staff sees that whatever “IT” is, Harrington doesn’t have it. He’s stayed upbeat, true. You have to in his position or there’s no reason for anybody to give you a job. Maybe he’ll get a good chance in Baltimore. Dude has never showed me anything very good. There’s been some games where he didn’t lose the game, but precious rare ones where he won the game.

I see Kynan Forney got himself outworked. Oh well. Separate the wheat from the chaffe. I think he might have gotten too comfortable, thinking like he was still working for Jim Mora,Jr. Nope. Not anymore.

Ken: Dude, “Shockey” is a tight end who plays for New Orleans. “Shockley” is the Atlanta QB we are discussing….”inorance” is not a word. When attempting to call someone “inorant” you should at least spell check…pathetic! You probably also think that 95% of blacks won’t vote for Obama because of race. If you think the hatred of Joey Harrington in this town and the call for “DJ” to make the team had nothing to do with race then you are truely “inorant”.

RAY-Forney’s overall performance suffered after he separated his shoulder. I don’t know whether it was mental, physical or both, but he just couldn’t return to form. He went from being our best all around OLineman to our biggest disappointment. Until the shoulder injury, he was a horse that played at close to Probowl levels under both DReeves and JMora’s systems.

As far as JHarrington is concerned, he’s gone and I wish him luck. Right now, I’m in Ala, and I hope the gm will be televised in this area. If so, being here will have at least one benefit. I believe we have a more talented team than Detroit, and we have a system thst’s designed to better utilize that talent. If we control the penalities and the line of scrimmage, we should win this gm easily.

To all GTech fans. I remember a lot of you simply went overboard suggesting the Falcons should trade as many draft picks as it took to acquire the draft rights to Calvin Johnson. You were convinced he would literally destroy the league, especially the Falcons, with his once in a lifetime talent. WELL, WHAT HAPPENED? Looks like he’ll get his chance Sunday to show us what he can do. Can you imagine where we’d be now if we’d followed through on that? We’d have CJohnson, but we would have given up our 1st and 2nd rd picks. I guess UGA fans aren’t the only one’s drinking that delusional juice.
