Falcons get to 75 without making a cut
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Flowery Branch - As expected, the Falcons didn’t have to make any major moves to reach today’s 75-man roster limit. In fact, they didn’t have to cut anyone at all.
Atlanta placed offensive tackle Renardo Foster on the reserve/physically unable to perform list and defensive tackle Trey Lewis on the reserve, non-football injury list to reach the NFL-mandated limit of 75. Both players are coming back from major knee operations.
Both players were already on similar injured lists, so, basically the Falcons just extended their time to heal.
Lewis and Foster will be out another six weeks, at which time they will have an additional 21 days to get healthy enough to play or be placed on injured reserve for the rest of the season. Foster probably has a better chance of returning this season since he tore his ACL early last season.
Lewis, who had been promoted to the starting nose tackle spot as a rookie, tore his ACL late in the season, then re-tore it this offseason walking down some steps.
The big cuts come Saturday, when rosters have to be trimmed to 53. QB D.J. Shockley, QB Joey Harrington, TE Martrez Milner, TB Jason Snelling, WR Brian Finneran, WR Adam Jennings and OG Kynan Forney are among some of the recognizable names on the bubble.

I love my dawgs but Milner is a goner. If you can’t get on the field and don’t have alot invested in the guy, its a bad combination.

If Pollard is able to show that he still has sufficient physical tools to play the game, then Milner is toast. And while I know they won’t do it, it seems that they don’t need 2 FBs. Ovie barely plays enough as it is. I’d rather keep Snelling and use him as an emergency FB if needed. If Turner goes down, I’m not trusting either Thomas Brown nor Norwood to convert a crucial 3rd and 2.

Finneran is a lock to make the roster. He is too good a player and has too good of a story to be cut.
The birds are going to need all the good PR they can get this year.
Why does McKay have a job in football and Dan Reeves does not?

DON”T assume Pollard is a lock to make this team; if he’s running on empty, then it could be a quick look and good bye.
That said Milner better get his act together!! Pressure is on; time to suck it up, show you “want it” and are a pro.

You’re trying to build something here so I think you keep the younger guys. Otherwise you end up having to fill that position with a younger guy in the future.
Seems a bit too control heavy if you bench or cut a better player because he’s been hurt. It’s an exceedingly violent game and guys are going to get hurt. As far as DJ/Harrington goes DJ is the one with upside. Plus Harrington makes a lot of money for a third QB. I think he’s the one that goes.

Keep Shockley, CUT HARRINGTON! Look…we know what Joey brings to the table; dink and donk. You can get that with both Ryan and Redman. Shockley brings a change of pace to the position. Plus Shockley hasn’t fully displayed his potential where as Harrington has. Harrington will take the birds no where; we saw that last year. Add to that, we saw it in Detroit and Miami. Keep WR Brian Finneran. He has a knack for getting open. CUT Jennings.

PLEASE don’t cut Snelling. He’s the real deal, and he needs to be kept as trade bait at the very least. I’m not a UGA fan at all, but I agree that Shockley has some potential as a scrambler, while Joey is Chris light. Sadly, Joey should go. Finneran also should be kept, if he realy is completely healed. He’s tough and smart and 6’5. A great target, who knows how to get open even without blazing speed, and who tends to make the catch in tough situations. Jennings looked good last week, but there’s a lot of mediocrity behind that. I think I’d keep him and try to trade him. Milner is gone: if they hadn’t seen something better in Pollard they wouldn’t have signed him (at this point, they didn’t sign him for a tryout). Forney has been average at best for years and is prone to false starts. I say, knowing this is controversial, that he goes. Dahl is more aggressive and the others can play more positions. Here’s the sleeper of the pre-season: Mughelli gets cut (I know, I know) and the Birds keep Brown AND Snelling! You heard it here first.

If you get down to your 3rd QB who would you rather have - Harrington or Shockley? Harrington has been a bust for a #3 pick, but he gives the team a better chance to win. IF it’s all about minimizing the hard cost associated with the 3rd QB, then you keep Shockley.
Bottom line - there is not too much more to it. Neither player is going to be more than a spot starter in this league (and that is being kind to Shockley).
Shockley was a good college player, but it does not look like he’s going to be an NFL caliber starting QB. He has nothing to be ashamed of; he had a very good college career.

Mughelli doesn’t get cut! Are you kidding? He’s the road grader type fullback that the falcons need to make their power running game work. Either brown or snelling will be cut and thats unfortunate because both have shown some ability. Maybe the one who gets cut can pass thru waivers and be placed on the practice squad.
I am in the camp to keep shockley and let harrington go. I hope DJ gets some decent playing time at Baltimore and plays well enough so he can secure a spot. If not hopefully he can pass thru waivers as well and be put on the practice squad.

the starting qb will be where the money is (72 mil) not the most talented. Ryan will be the starter because that is what the falcons need to cover their over paying for a rookie qb. when Shockley played with the first team last year he was very impressive. Too bad he was not given an equal chance this year. the reason is he is a better qb than ryan and the staff knowing where their bread is buttered would not give him a chance to show up the team`s top pick. anyone disagreeing with this evaluation is exposing his prejudice or ignorance. which one is yours?

I wouldn’t be too surprised if the Falcons keep Joey over DJ. Shockley’s change of pace is not what a team searching for some consistency needs. Joey’s short, pocket passing and conservative game management approach (however marginal in quality it may be), is more like the scheme Ryan has been asked to execute so far. Then again, if we are ever down to our third QB, we’re toast anyway so it probably doesn’t matter. Hopefully Matt will get his chances to throw some deeper passes as he gets more comfortable with the Pro game. We’ll need it to help spread the field and keep the opposing D guessing a bit. If our D can continue keeping our opponents kicking field goals instead of scoring TD’s, we’ll shock a lot of people this year, myself included. GO FALCONS.

Ok let’s make this real simple. Harrington has been a bust that’s true. With that said Joe Montana, Mike Vick, Dan Marino who ever would have been a bust behind the HORRIBLE offensive lines of Detroit, Miami and Atlanta. Until Ryan (68%) was allow to play longer in the last game, Harrington was the highest rated QB on the team 92.6% 2 tochdowns and 0 interceptions. Shockley (5.6%) has not had enough time with the first team offense but that’s the way it goes sometimes. I wish them both well where ever they are playing. I say cut Redman (41%) and Keep Harrington and Shockley!

The secondary has looked pretty good. Grimes looks like a future star, but the whole thing will collapse like a house of cards if we can’t muster a pass rush. Look for a lot of blitzing, and hope we don’t get burned to often.

Kroy Biermann should start ahead of Jamaal! hehe - nah, not really. But he should certainly be retained and brought in as change of pace behind Jamaal - for sure. This dude is a beast and will continue to get better. INTENSE!
Whoever above mentioned Ovie being cut is insane. The guy could block a mack truck thru a demo derby! Plus, the guy, being as big as he is can still get down field to make a play on special teams - keep your eyes on this guy!
Jennings can go somewhere else, seems like a good runner in practice, he just cant make it happen in the game - Shell Shocked or somthing…
On another note: I still cant believe my man Osi is down for the year…NO!

I am telling you, if they cut Finn, I am DONE DONE DONE…it would be one thing if he was physically unable to do it but he’s proven he can & he will provide invaluable production (given the opportunity) on both offense & special teams as well as leadership & character. You can’t cut that!!! Jennings can go…as for QB, it’s a tough situation. If Ryan went down, who do you want running this team? Joey. 3rd stringer, scout team QB should be DJ. Sorry Redman, you are out. You are superfluous. This defense is still worriesome, who’s rushing the passer besides Abe? Not the human roadkill on the other side, that’s for sure! We’ll need some linebacker & corner blitzes…

I hope Snelling stays. He has great vision and cutback abiulity in the zone blocking scheme (when we go that way). T. Brown looks good, too. I still am not sold on Jennings.
Unless we keep 9 DLs, we are going to have to release somebody pretty decent (Abe, Grady, Davis, Anderson are locks - that leaves Biermann, Morehead, Babs, Stanley, Moore, Evans - 2 of these guys won;t make the team.)
Also, pick 3 (m/b 4) among Adams, DeCoud, Harris, Cooper, Irons, Stone and Fontenot. Tough to do.

We got some serious beasts at linebacker. Watch for Stephen Nichols. He’s gonna be a bad mamma jamma. We need to go to a 3-4 with our depth. Keep Biermann too. He’s the next Kerney. Good pick there. I say keep Snelling and Brown and cut Jennings. Why aint Norwood returning ko’s or punts? How bout my theory…Shock at #2 and cut both Redman and Harrington. Pick up a #3 somewhere else. Can we do worse? Both those guys are prototypical backups. neither one is a starter for anybody for 16 games. We should be able to keep 3 TE’s so Milner should stay. Finn should stay too. Or Harrington who simply needs to just get out of a Falcons jersey. Period. a real veteran would be great. I just dont beleive either one of those guys bring real veteran leadership or teaching skills to the table. If you haven’t learned, how can you teach? Thats what I’m trying to say without getting too longwinded. So my question still remains…Can we do worse?

I think Shockley is likely to be the odd man out at QB. Personally, however, I would release Harrington. The #3 guy only has to carry a clipboard and DJ can do it for way less $$$ than Harrington. Plus, we all know what Harrington can (and most importantly can’t) do, while with DJ, we really don’t know yet.

It’s really hard to decide what Smith will decide on the Shockey vs Harrington situation. I can make a case for either one. If it’s a matter of money, Harrington gets cut. If it’s a matter of experience, especially as a starter, Shockey gets cut. If we keep Shockey, Redmon will be the only experienced QB on the roster. I don’t think Shockey will make it through waivers, so the practice squad is out.
The same holds true for the Brown vs Snelling RB situation. If you keep Snelling, you can maintain a power runnning attack if Turner goes down. If you keep Brown, you have more speed and versatility. You also have insurance for your return gm if AJennings goes down. I don’t think either player will make it through waivers, so the practice squad is out. It’s not just a matter of maintaining our power running gm if Turner goes down, it’s also about maintaining an effective return gm if Jenning goes down. It’s a lot easier to find a power RB like Snelling on somebody’s practice squad than a quick, fast, versatile RB like Brown. These are factors most of you aren’t considering when making your RB or QB preferences.
With astute play calling and consistent OL development, along with our abundance of talent at the skill positions, our OFF will be productive. Our DB’s and LB’s seem to be very strong. It’s our DL that will decide how far this team will go. I believe our run DEF will be very effective. It’s our pass rush that’s the question mark. If it’s effective, the Falcons will not be pushovers for anybody, and will kick some butts in the NFC South. I’m looking forward to the RETURN OF THE DIRTY BIRDS. GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like to hear ‘Dirty Birds’ again. What a nice ring it has. Linebackers and secondary should be solid (finally). Keep D. Stone. Hard hitter. Very important. Our schedule couldn’t be better for a ‘rebuilding year’. Only real threat to our secondary besides Steve Smith is Mr. Johnson week 1. Thats if the QB can hit him. The Saints might show up this year and they might not. Opposing receivers…KC, Minn, Philly, Oak, Stl, Den, Chi, GB, SD not much of a threat. Plus no D Hall!! C’mon B. Grimes! We just gotta wake up J. Anderson or demote him. Can anybody say ‘Chauncey Davis’.

I was never a fan of Milner despite been a big time fan of the Dawgs, but despite how I felt about him as a Dawg, I think it wiser to keep him over Pollard. I don’t think Seattle Seahawks, and Detroit Lions do not know talent or had too many on their rosters when they both did not resign mr. Pollard. Furthermore we are not going to win this year, so why bring in an over the hill TE and pay him more than an up and coming player. Having said that I think he will not survive the cut. I would like to see both Snelling and Brown make the cut, four RB’s is not too many to carry as they can also play on Special Team. Finneran should make the cut as the fifth WR. It might seem to contradict what I said earlier about not keeping an older player at the expense of a younger player, but he brings so much to the team. Shockley should survive the cut for one reason and that is because Matt Ryan has proven good enough to get the start. With Ryan starting there will be no point keeping two veteran backups, it would be wiser to keep Redman as number two while Shockley develops, then next year if he progresses to the satisfaction of the coaches, they could move him to number two or try to trade him. My prediction is that they will win six games and finish last in the division, but I will take that, because I believe we are building something special here. We just need continuity with the Coaches and front ofice personnel, which coupled with our great owner means great years ahead.

Um, yea, I think it is inconceivable that this team makes the playoffs.
That is why the player selection is more compelling that it usually is. I would rather lose with guys I like (Milner, Brown and Shockley (at least at #3 QB)) than with guys I have no idea who they are and will be replaced as a matter of course anyway. All things being equal, go with the local guy and build fan interest.
Milner or Pollard? Pollard is just a position placeholder. Keep Milner, why not.
Brown or Snelling - Brown is more versitile, but not all that shifty or power-oriented. Will come down to who is the best special teams player. Keep Brown, neither is likely to be a big contributor one way or the other.
Shockley or Harrington - If we have to depend on the #3 QB, we have bigger issues. Shockley can carry the clipboard for way less $$$ than Harrington and the fans like him. Plus Harrington has proven he can’t do the job. Shockley has not been given an opportunity to prove anything.

You have to keep snelling I am a huge dawg fan and I hope brown is retained. But If you are going to employ a power running game you will need another big back. this staff is gonna want turner to carry it 300 times which lends to a higer risk of injury Norwood will always be fresh but he is not gonna run anybody over like the scheme calls for. CUT JENNING AND KEEP BROWN, between him and douglas that is your return game.

Everyone keeps saying Harrington hasn’t proven anything. When has he really been put in a situation where he could prove anything, other than he can take a licking and keep on ticking. Just look at the situations of the 3 teams he’s played for(Detroit, Miami and Atlanta). Name another QB that has done, or could have done, any better. I love the fact he’s always positive and is willing to do whatever it takes to help his team. He’s about the only player from last yrs fiasco that got screwed and didn’t openly complain.
I believe he’s a lot better than the situations he’s had to deal with. How many different systems, HC’s and OC’s has he dealt with. He’s had to deal with 2 systems, HC’s and OC’s in just one season with the Falcons. Let’s face it, he’s not as bad as a lot of you want to believe, and Shockey isn’t as ready as a lot of you want to believe. Certainly you UGA fans can be supportive of your team and its players without being totally rediculous, as some of you are.

You can play the rival card via Tech-GA, blowhards can play the race angle, or the “Turk” angle…which is the one ALL Falcon fans fear! After Gen. Sherman, the 1981 Playoff debacle with Dallas, the worst Atlanta franchise goof, was Bret Favre! Shockley can have two bum knees, a way-ward cannon of an arm, and tunnel vision like a covered bridge, but, but, all of that ceases to exist when he is cut and sent packing by the Falcons! That is what WE ALL fear the most!!! He morphs into a franchise QB with ANOTHER team and dearest Atlanta becomes another NFL success story footnote!

Shockley should be the #3 QB, Harrington should go. Why? First, salary. Harrington would probably be the highest paid #3 in the NFL. Second, it’s the right thing to do. There are some teams out there that could seriously use a Joey Harrington… the Chiefs come to mind. Let the man go and have a fair shot at selling his services on the free agent market. I doubt he wants to be a #3, so cutting him would be doing him a favor.
Snelling is the better option at RB. Milner has more upside than Pollard. Finneran has earned a spot on this roster by the sheer fact of the countless hours of sweat and rehab it took just to get healthy again. Forney has probably lost his job to Dahl.

If the Falcons can get something for Harrington like another big, solid D-lineman since they passed on Dorsey, trade him. But don’t cut him. He’s not as bad as he’s made out to be and he is the most experienced QB on the roster. He hasn’t gotten much work in the preseason either and the O- line seems to be playing better than it did last year when Petrino was here when he started a few games.

I love D.J.’s attitude and character. I’d love to have him teach my kids or grandkids, but I don’t want him as my NFL quarterback. Mark Richt had a reason for keeping him #2. I do think Thomas Jones could do a bang up job as a full time returner and Jennings should be let go. There are enough receivers he’s just not needed.
By talent scout

Dennis— Yes Coach Richt had a reason for keeping DJ on - bench - it was David Greene. However when given the chance he peformed just about as good as Greene. I personally think he is better than either Redmond or Joey but the main thing is I watch the game for enjoyment. I enjoy watching DJ play than more than the other QBs and his talent is superior to his competetion. And another thing - what is wrong with someone having character? If our former QB had some he might still be in Atlanta instead of Kansas. ROAN ST sorry to ruffle your hood but your use of Hitler answers the question about you. Bless you anyway.

T.S. - go back and read my post again and tell me where I said there was anything wrong with having character. I didn’t. I believe I applauded him for having it. I wouldn’t trust my grandkids to one who didn’t. This is not a popularity show for the locals, even if they have some bit of talent. I went to the first game the Falcons ever played and have been bleeding with them ever since. I am also a UGA fan, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the talent of one from Tech, like Brooking. I try to be objective and only want to keep those who give us the best shot to win if they’re called on. I trust that when the time comes, Coach Smith and his crew will make the right choice. D.J.’s numbers are miserable this year, and that’s a fact that no one can argue with. Harrington is not the greatest QB in the NFL, but then he’s never been surrounded by anything close to a good team. A bad team can only hurt a good QB, but a great team can make even a ho-hum QB shine. Example: look at the wasted Heisman given to Gino Torretta. That Miami team would have made any QB look good. Thanks for the blessings. I need all the help I can get. :-)

Joey H is not as stout as the others, so we keep DJ. But DJ is really far back as a really good QB in the NFL. He has to learn to stop running around, has to learn to read defenses, Learn that a hard 100 mph pass is not necessary, and learn from Ryan how to throw a “touch” pass. As this takes time, we will hope that Ryan and Redman can control things until DJ comes of age, mentally over physically.

Calm down TB. I only meant keeping Brown would give us more flexibility. He’d also provide insurance if Jennings is retained as our return man and becomes injured or reverts back to his habit of fair catching everything. I think they don’t want Norwood returning kicks because they intend to use him much more in our OFF, like the Bears are doing with DHester.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how our DEF will respond against top competition. I want to see how much of an improvement having a strong hardhitting MLB(Lofton) and moving Brookings to his natural position can have against the run. I also want to see how effective our pass rush will be, especially when we switch to the 3/4 DEF. I wonder if DT GJackson will play in this gm. If so, we’ll get to see our entire starting DEF in action.

I think you keep Shockley simply because he has upside and could be worth something in return when he displays his upside. Ryan is the future. Harrington is a nice guy, but no team is going to give up anything to get him. Shockley could be worth some draft picks etc in the future.

The Schockley/Harrington decision comes down to experience and skill, not abilities or talent. In the end, Harrington has had the time and experience to know how to at least read a defense. Shockley, whether you consider it fair or not, hasn’t had the play time.
So, give D.J. his walking papers, hand Joey the clipboard and hope like hell that he never has to put it down.

I don’t know what to say about some of the rediculous attitudes and comments concerning individual players making the roster. It seems some of you are more concerned with individual players than the team as a whole, and that’s stupid. The really pitiful part is you are arguing about backup players, not starters.
I seem to be one of the few willing to talk about our OL, DL, DB’s and our strong, deep core of WR’s, RB’s and LB’S. Most of the discussions/arguments seem to be centered around who should be our 2nd and 3rd sting QB’s(DJ/Harrington/Redman), RB’s(Snelling/Brown)and WR’s(Finneran/Jennings). We’re 10 days from the season opener and there seems to be less concern about the frontline players than which player(s)are backing them up, especially if it’s someone from the UGA.
COME ON PEOPLE, since when did the UGA become a bastion for NFL QB’s? Your team/program has consistently been unable to produce a quality QB capable of starting in the NFL since Fran Tarkenten. Why in he11 do you think one with only one(1)yr of starting experience since high school will be more successful in the NFL than those before him who had 3 to 4yrs of starting experience? DOES THAT MAKE ANY SENSE TO YOU UGA FANATICS?
Let me put this another way. If he couldn’t unseat David Green in college, who has warmed the bench his entire NFL career, what makes DJ so great all of a sudden at the NFL level(especially since he’s been injured most of his NFL career).

It seems most of you all do not just get it.The #3 qb will most certainly not see action and it would do alot to help build a bridge between the team and the city.they have alienated alot of fans over the last two seasons and by putting homegrown talent on the team with great character;that would go a long way to smooth over tons of ill will.

I looky into me magic crystal ball, and I see the starter, it is Matt Ryan, he will get hurt in tonights final Pre-season game against Baltimore on the very first offensive snap. Oh what a shame, then, the Falcons have no choice but to let the black guy from UGA come in and finish up the game… That black guy is going to rush for 75 yards, and pass for 250 yards with 3 tds total.. 1 rushing, and 2 passing. They are going to beat baltimore 35- 17.. Too bad for the Falcons, Matt Ryan will be back to start the first game of the season this year, while the black guy gets cut and then signs with Tampa Bay. The Falcons are going to lose miserably this year, and a few more years to come…. the Bucs however, will wind up starting that Black guy later this year, where he will win the rest of the games for the seasons, and carrying that team to a NFC championship!!

Shockely didnt get a fair chane at the starters job. Demitroff and Smith pre-ordained Matt (Chris Miller) Ryan the starter. Now next year mid-season and the year after that we will be looking for another QB because he is not pro material. Then on top of that Shock would fill up sits at the dome. I hope the birds cut him so he will have a chane on another team. I wouldnt be able to stand him having mop up duty at the end of the year after doing it all pre-season. What make anybody think Redmon and Harrington can play in the N.F.L.. They both have had plenty of chances. Then we put them on the depth chart in front of Shock. MAN PLEASE>

i dont even remember if i liked Shockley or not - but i know now that ive been reading all these blogs about shockley this, shockley that….Im tired of the dude. His name makes me vomit a little. the guy has never played in regular season, same as Ryan, yet you dumb arses think hes great. Shut up, and watch the game tonight. All this fair s** should stop now, no one ever said life was fair…The coaches are at practice with the guy everday, im sure they know if hes ready or not, or ever will be. All we see is the images and read the articles and see the games once a week. There are 6 other days in the week that this guy is with the team working…obviously hes not up to par. obviously hes not good enough at this point. obviously hes not beating anyone at the QB position - Ryan, Redman and Harrrington are playing better. Obviously.
You people are not smarter than the coaches are, whether your a Shockley fan or not. The coaches know the deal, they see the dude everyday. Give it a damned rest already. HEs not our starter, nor will he be right now. The guy is playing tonight, with the first teams…watch…learn….and shut up.
We know who our starter is, and we know who our backup ISNT - so move on and talk about somthing that matters. Talk about the players PLAYING! The players who EARNED spots to start. The players who will be winning or losing for this team, not the guys standing all year watching. You people are broken records…
Note: - “You people” = UGA/Shockley Fans who keep on and on and on and on. (I cant believe i have to even make note of those words, damn racists ruin everything for everyone. Your the reason FREEDOM doesnt work!)

It’s getting closer to game time. I’m hoping that Shockley plays well enough to make it hard to cut him. I think he has good upside and might bring us a good return on investment in a few years. And NO ONE can ever accuse me of being a UGA fan.
I see Ryan as being more like the second coming of Chris Chandler, not Chris Miller. He doesn’t have all of the great physical skills of some players, but he is a leader and can take a team places. I would rather have Ryan’s brain with his arm, than all of the physical talent of a recently incarcerated player who had more talent than anyone I’ve ever seen and didn’t have the brain to use it.

JAMAL-the truth hurts doesn’t it. Your respoonse, as crude and primitive as it was, shows you got my point.
ZONE3-Smith was hired to put together the best team possible with the talent he has available. WE ARE NOW 9 DAYS FROM OUR OPENING GM. THE COACHING STAFF HAS TO GET THE STARTING OFF AND DEF READY TO PERFORM AT MAX EFFICIENCY. THIS IS THE TIME THEY HAVE TO CONCENTRATE ON PREPARING THEIR FRONTLINE PLAYERS TO START THE SEASON, NOT CATER TO A BUNCH OF DILLUSIONAL UGA/SHOCKEY FATANICS OVER WHO GETS TO BE THE 3RD STRING QB.
At this point, Shockey staying or going won’t make a bit of difference in our won/loss record. He11, if you UGA fanatics want to see your players so badly, buy tickets to their gms and attend. Don’t bring that ignorance oto these blogs and try to turn this site into a UGA LOVE FEST. Him being selected as the 3rd string backup QB won’t be any different than him being on IR all of last yr. That’s the impact he’ll likely have.

Ken, I normally agree with most of what you say, but the fact is Shockley’s looked far more talented than both Harrington and Redman so far this preseason despite playing with “lineman” and “receivers” who’ll be lucky to get an invite to a local beer league. It’s happening again as we speak; Ryan inexplicably played the whole 1st quarter in what’s supposed to be Shockley’s 1st real chance and he gets not one single starting offensive lineman blocking for him. NOT ONE SNAP this preseason has he been given a chance with the first unit in what was supposed to be an open QB competition, and I’m genuinely surprised because this coaching staff has been very smart and very fair in every other respect.
You’re right; to an extent it doesn’t matter who gets the 3rd string job, so why not take the youngest guy with the most talent, strongest arm, hardest work ethic, lowest salary and the biggest fan following? Answer that question for me if you would; I’d love to hear an argument as to why Harrington should be getting paid more to sit on the bench in front of fewer fans on a team that is already short on exciting players.

GRINCH-I’m not questioning Shockey’s talent, character or committment. I’m just tired of UGA/Shockey fans making a battle for 3rd string QB a primary issue when we are about to start the regular season. This is the last preseason gm, and the last chance to get MRyan, the designated starter, some reps under gm conditions with and against the other teams 1st team. Yet, these UGA/Shockey fans are upset that Smith won’t take time away form MRyan, and the rest of his starters, to let Shockey make the team as the 3rd string backup. Now that’s totally rediculous.
Has anyone considered that Smith has seen enough of him in practice and on tape to have already decided. Maybe Smith doesn’t need to see him with the 1st team to make a decision. LET’S ALLOW OUR COACHING STAFF TO GET READY FOR THE OPENING GM OF THE UP COMING SEASON AND NOT GET BOGGED DOWN WITH SECOND AND THIRD TIER CONCERNS.

Prediction. If finneran doesn’t make the team he will be playing somewhere in the NL this season. 6’5” receivers who can get open and catch the ball in traffic are valuable commodities in this league. In fact I bet if finneran gets cut he will have several teams lining up for his services. No way I would keep another receiver just because he is maybe an adequate kick returner over finn. The man has proven he is back from the knee injuries and deserves to make the team.
Shockley looked pretty good tonight and I would have to keep him as the third string QB and let him continue to develop. Harrington is Mr. happy feet and holds on to the ball to long and takes to many sacks. I like how shock rolls out of the pocket and throws downfield. Got to keep him because Harrington can’t do anything that Ryan and Redman already do. Just my two cents.

Fair enough, Ken. You’re right; there are more important issues. The o-line looks much better than I expected; Dimitroff looking at Baker’s whole body of work instead of just his senior year seems to have paid dividends. But most of the credit must go to Beaudreau. Anyone else notice that McClure’s been listed as 286 his whole career and when they interviewed him tonight he was listed at 301? Good sign. Gibbs starved them to the point of weakness and told them to chop knees, and Beaudreau tells them to play at the weight they’re supposed to and just be nasty with good technique, and suddenly the same guys that sucked forever are actually not that bad. Imagine when we get some more real talent in here. I really like this entire coaching staff. Anyone notice how despite our supposed lack of talent on defense they don’t miss tackles EVER and have only given up two TD’s all preseason (and none since the first game)?
I’d hate to have to pick between Thomas Brown and Snelling; hopefully they cut Jennings and both make it.
Despite having a 2nd string OL and being pinned inside the 12 the first two possessions, I think Shock showed enough to get the job over Harrington tonight especially when salaries are considered. Harrington did what he always does; hold on to the ball to long, take sacks, make enough completions on three yard slants to make his % look good and have a positive attitude. I like the guy a bunch; but there’s just no place for him.

grinch-everyone knows OT Baker was coming off a serious injury last yr and still made 1st team All American, and for the 3rd time. And anyone that follows football knows USC OLinemen usually do very well in the pros. They’ve always run a pro style OFF with pro style blocking schemes and techniques. When they’re good, they’re good. Zone blocking certainly isn’t new to most of our OL. Trap blocking, which has been the Steelers mainstay since the days of Chuck Knoll requires both size, agility and quickness. Those attributes were prerequisites under Mora’s zone/cut blocking scheme.
It’s the performance of our DEF that’s exciting me. Keep teams out of the endzone and make them use clock to score. Then our OFF controls the clock, puts points on the board, and we win the close gms. With our soft schedule, along with our talent and the system we’re employing, I see us having a successful season.

Who says? They’re 6 OL from USC in the pros now counting Baker.
None of these guys [young Falcons] have played anybody yet. Factor in that because of the screwed up coaching situation the last SEVERAL years we really don’t know what our young vets can do. Who knows what Norwood will be? He’ll rip off a 60yrd TD and then sit on the bench forever.
I’m as big of a Falcon fan as anybody but this team, even in playoff seasons has never played a season of solid defensive football. Not to argue (there’s more than enough of that here for anybody) but we haven’t played a solid offense this entire preseason.
Just in our own division Sean Payton (N.O.) and Dan Henning (CAR) are master play callers with weapons. The thought of Matt Ryan having to go up against Tampa gives me nightmares. And love or hate Vick when we’ve played Panthers without him they’ve put a whuppin on us.
Realisticaly there is no one on the offense that you HAVE to stop to beat the Falcons and nobody that you have to account for on when attacking our defense.
While they’re not the worst team in the league by far, there’s really nobody that you can point to on either side of the ball that you can consistently count on to make a play.
Hopefully they’re headed in the right direction but life as a Falcon fan can be summed up in one encounter. On a flight from ATL to SFO a guy and I were both reading a book called AT DAWN WE SLEPT. Military history, about Pearl Harbor. Got to talking, he was an NFL assistant who’d just interviewed for the Falcon job. Didn’t think he’d get it.
His name was Mike Holmgren. The Falcons hired Jerry Glanville. 40+ years and before every one I have to sadly remind myself “They’re the Falcons” I’m still buying season tickets, I’ll never learn.

roan st agree with your two cents worth with one exception. I think Shockley should be the backup QB at the very least. Down the road he will surpass the 72 million dollar man. The reason - he has a better arm and is a lot more mobile than ryan. As you saw tonight ryan is no super QB. Ken do not get too excited about this team yet. The real games start soon and we will see if having a player to pull for and watch is important if the falcons flounder. Roan st - my apoligies for my remarks.

It would appear not EVERYONE knows, because the pundits were calling him (Baker) a reach in the first round when it happened. There was a whole bunch of “Yes, the Falcons obviously need o-line help but Baker’s got short arms and is injury prone; I don’t know that he’ll succeed at this level” kind of comments.
The defense has a couple of holes talent wise, but is going to be solid. They’re hungry and well coached. I’d be surprised if they weren’t in the top 20 in the NFL this year, at least in the red zone.

Grinch, NO we weren’t sitting together and I didn’t say so. AT DAWN WE SLEPT is not an obscure book, it was a best seller at the time. By the way the Falcons also reached an agreement with Terry Donohue to coach, announced it and he backed out because of the Smiths and this year was our second flirtation with Bill Parcells. Some of us have been around a long time.
And I didn’t write that the Falcons will “still suck” (I save the artful phrases for you)
The point of the post was that you can’t get too excited by this team. Top twenty on defense? What drug are you doing? Sorry, man; I suppose it’s easy to strike up conversations with people you’re flying with if you’re not sitting near each other. I do it all the time; when on my way to the bathroom I scan to see what people are reading and if it looks interesting I crawl across the aisle and sit in the laps of the people next to them and strike up a conversation about football because I know that’s what they’re thinking of when reading books about Pearl Harbor. Silly me for thinking you were implying you were sitting together; I’m sure you were just gathered around the water cooler of a 727.
Please quit trying to act like you’re anything but a common pessimistic troll on this incredibly negative blog. Of course teams have been running up the middle the last three years; I never said they weren’t. In case you haven’t noticed, there’s a new coaching staff in place, The Head Coach is well known for being an excellent defensive coordinator, a new defensive coordinator is in place, new DT’s (with the exception of Grady who’s stout against the run), a new MLB who can obviously lay the wood (if you bothered watching the game tonight), new FS and hard hitting backup SS and three new CB’s. So guess what; you’re point is completely invalid. But you probably knew that before you ever posted, because you’re likely some 20 year old jackass with nothing better to do than try to get a rise out of real falcons fans who have a little deserved optimism for this season. And if you’re really some middle aged guy who’s been watching the falcons for longer than a couple of seasons, please either jump on the bandwagon or take your buzz-killing negativity to a different city and team; we don’t need that here now. Time to move forward.

My post wasn’t about you. You act as if you’re somehow important enough that someone would have to trick. I don’t care what you think about me but the facts are facts. I’m not one of those people who sit around and complain about TV blackouts. I buy tickets and real fans don’t jump on or off of a bandwagon. A new head coach? Hmmm, when’s the last time we had one of those? A new defensive coordinator? BVG is a first time PROFESSIONAL defensive coordinator and as much as I love SEC football I’m smart enough to see the differences.
Hey I hope that Lofton is an all-pro. If he is he should be the second straight all-pro drafted because we should have taken Willis last year. Grinch, strong defenses have strong pass rushes. Where’s ours? Who’s going to cover Smith and Colston and Galloway?
three new CB’s? Whose point does that prove more? Buzz kill? LOL! How old is that? You’re the grandpa. If the Falcons finish in the top 20 in D (and look up the last time that they did that) I will send you steaks for Xmas, I swear.
By the way I find it funny that you mention Grady Jackson because I remember on this very board last year after he was cut the GREAT MAJORITY of posters approved of it and on the Wyche blog and on the then Bird Gal blog kept calling him fat and overweight. Calling me negative is hilarious considering all of the race baiting and constant arguement over a player who’s in jail. Please..Finneran shined last week and this week as well….He has demonstrated his value.
D.J. has as well…He was able to sustain 2 scoring drives alst night when no other QB could do and in the previous preseason games when given the chance to play, demonstrated he is healthy, strong, and mentally able to do his job.
The Falcon organization might want to consider finding a strong #2 punter they may need one should the #1 and #2 QB’s continue to be unable to sustain scoring drives….At least Shockley gave our punter a much desrved rest.

I believe the best move for the Falcons at this time is to keep Harrington, cut Shockley, keep Finneran, cut Jennings. The reason - the third QB on the roster is going to be holding the clipboard for the coach, and it’s easier to see Harrington in that job because he is taller. That way, Coach Smith won’t waste time looking for him between possessions.

Joey Harrington cannot get out of his own way! Only a timely penalty on one of his brain-dead interceptions allowed the Falcons to escape with a win. Harrington is a nice guy. The waste is also a loser, loser, LOSER! Another loser on a team of losers IS NOT what this franchise needs now or forevermore! Was I the only one that observed that rhe slow motion man resembled a pregnant elephant knee-deep in molasses whenever there was ANY KIND of pass rush? I do not condone a quarterback running all the time but I do like seeing one move to avert a pass rush. At least long enough to throw the ball away to avoid negative yardage! Ditch this pathetic untalented bum! Got sick of looking at him last season. Begin the new campaign anew. Without JH! Squa Tront!
