CBs to be tested and a look at the Horn issue

First-year cornerback Brent Grimes and Chevis Jackson held up fine in the preseason-opener last week vs. Jacksonville. We’ll find out how good they are or how much work they’ll have to do after Saturday’s game against the Colts. Though Peyton Manning won’t be playing, wide receivers Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne are expected to play.

It’s a very tough system to stop and Grimes and Jackson will be on the spot from the first snap. Regular starting right cornerback Chris Houston is just returning from a dislocated shoulder injury so his playing time could be limited — if he plays at all. David Irons, who was starting to come on, pulled a hamstring and won’t play.

To help the corners, the Falcons would like to generate some pass rush. Though the Colts play a scheme where the quarterback unloads the ball quickly, getting into passing lanes or re-setting the line of scrimmage is what the coaches will be looking for.

Right end John Abraham (ankle) won’t play so Chauncey Davis will play opposite Jamaal Anderson. A player to keep an eye on is rookie end Kroy Biermann.

The fifth round draft pick is really starting to surge after a very tough start in which he looked physically overmatched. Biermann is an instinctive speed rusher who is showing coaches a lot moxie the way he’s come on. He still has a long way to go and he is a situational player, but he’s one of the rookies starting to distinguish himself.

In other developments, wide receiver Joe Horn could take some snaps. This has been a strange week for Horn, who wants out to the point that he told me he’s contemplated giving back some of the guaranteed $2.5 million he’s owed. Though there have been some suggestions that Horn’s base salary is not guaranteed, it is. Otherwise, he would have been long gone.

What likely will happen with Horn is things will come down to final cuts Aug. 30. Either a team in need will work a trade for Horn or they will wait to see if Atlanta cuts him (and eats the $2.5 mil). If the Falcons’ don’t cut him or trade, they’re in a tough spot.

They might have to:

• Put him in the rotation at the expense of someone like Mike Jenkins or Harry Douglas.

• Cut a player who could give them help on special teams (Brian Finneran, Adam Jennings).

• Keep him on the active roster and make him game-day inactive, which would basically wipe out a roster spot that would be better served with someone who would actually play.

None of those are ideal scenarios, which would lead you to think there will be some type of separation within the next few weeks.

Probably will go 0-4 in preseason but who cares-we gotta see what the youngsters can do. I really like the Kroy Biermann pick and hope he makes the team. As for Horn-don`t let the door hit you on the rump on your way out.

Lets root for Joe Horn to play and do well. Maybe somebody will trade for the aging veteran.

Maybe Biermann can learn some of Abraham’s moves. Joe Horn looked great until he signed on with the Falcons. If he sits around for another year or two he will lose all his skills as a receiver, so he needs to take a salary cut, and get traded. Looks like we still are short of a really good cornerback (or two), how about getting a CB for Horn?

Who wants Horn? If a team waits, and the Falcons cut him, they sign him then. No one in their right mind would sign an ancient receiver with a poor attitude and a big mouth for that much money.
Good analysis on the situation Steve, but I’d have to say cut him and pay him. We had 10 times that amount set aside last year for a player who is still on the team, but won’t ever don the uniform again. Cut him today and get Mr.Blank out of the free agency market.

When you really think agout it, Joe Horn’s mouth is writing checks that his body can’t cash; he can sneeze and get a hamstring injury. Why not take the hefty salary and continue to mentor these younger players. Or if he doesn’t think he’s the coaching type, brush up on his on-camera skills. Players should know when its time to leave on their own terms - not wait for injury or the league to force them out.

I hope they are taking Joe Horn’s guaranteed money directly out of Rich McKay’s wallet. And now on to another great McKay decision…Jamaal Anderson - when can we declare this dude a straight bust? I have never seen such a high pick struggle with all phases of the game: technique - HORRIBLE; strength - LAUGHABLE and football acumen? Without the first two it is really hard to tell. I have never seen a DE spend so much time on the ground. When Abraham is in the game, he is never doubled. Terrible. Guy is stealing money…

Steve, by what regular season game will Jamaal Anderson be demoted if he fails to get a sack? Do you think he will get any slack considering the interior defensive line? I hate to ask such a question, but the topic is a concern. I’m suspicious of any as-yet unproven player who was drafted by McKay.

How is Laurent Robinson looking now that he started playing at the end of training camp? Thanks.

HOW IS BRANDON MILLER DOING? I KNOW HE’S A FREE AGENT BUT HE LOOKED WELL IN THE FIRST GAME. WHEN WILL DJ GET A SHOT WITH THE FIRST TEAM AGAINST A FIRST TEAM DEFENSE? HE IS A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH.

WITH ALL THE FLACK MCKAY GETS DON’T FORGET HE STILL DRAFTED BOLEY, LAURENT ROBINSON, WHITE, NORWOOD, HOUSTON, SHOCKLEY & THIS LIST IS LONGER. I’M NOT A HUGE FAN OF HIS BUT GIVE CREDIT WHERE IT’S DUE.

Think DE is the weak point on the defense … Jamaal’s not got what it takes and Abe is injury-prone again it looks like! Put Horn, Jennings, Jamaal in a package deal for a DE that can play. Maybe then Abe will be more of a every down player if he has a DE to help rush the passer. DJ needs to play with the first team to see how he handles himself when it really counts. He may be the better of the backup QBs if he can contain his excitement. He has the same tendency as the sacred one to overthrow his target once he sees the protection break down. Otherwise he throws a pretty good ball. Snelling needs to play, the guy can tote the leather … he has speed and power and ability to make tacklers miss in the open field, seems to have good hands too.

Hey TREY,

Why in the world would you include DJ Shockley in the list of good Rich Mckay draft picks……..he has done nothing and showed very little in the preseason games and scrimmages. He is similar to Vick only less talented than Vick. We do not need an inconsistent passer who makes slow/bad decisions and throws every ball at Mach III (that is very fast by the way). Just because he can scramble a little bit does not make him a good QB. He throws VERY questionable balls almost every time he scrambles (potential INT most of the time). He is a GREAT person and has a wonderful attitude/demeaner, but he is not a very good NFL QB. Did anyone else witness the same things I did at the High School scrimmage and all of his previous preseason games?? If we cut him; no other team will sign him and we will probably place him on the practice squad. This fact alone should prove to all of the blind DJ fanatics that he is not as good as they would like to believe. Face the facts people.

Our only option with Horn appears to be for him to play well in the preseason, pray that he is willing to renegotiate his contract to something reasonable, and then find a team willing to trade for him. We might even need to find a team willing to take him with no compensation (I mean trade him for $1) so that we do not have to pay him $2.5M (salary cap hit) if we cut him. This would be better than cutting a player with future potential or using the $2.5M of salary cap space. It sounds a little strange at first, but think about it.

G Money is making this a race issue when race has absolutely NOTHING to do with the facts regarding his abillity as an NFL QB. There are a significant number of black NFL QB’s which can and have played VERY well in the NFL; however, DJ Shockley does not possess the skill set that Warren Moon, Donovan McNabb, Vince Young, Doug Williams, etc. happen to possess. These players along with a number of other great QB’s (which just happen to be white) have proven that a player must have a certain amount of skill, leadership and intelligence to be consistent and successful in the NFL.

Why do so many people have to cry racism everytime someone disagrees with thier point of view. By the way, what race do you think I am??

I’m hoping many of you are wrong. Jamaal has a brain; I”m just hoping he has the physical skills to combine with the brain to be an NFL force — like Kerney was/is.

Ease off on ragging him…until after the 4th game of the season. If he hasn’t come on by then, we can start looking.

With his off-season skills and evident character clearly on display in the halls of Congress and with youth groups, he’s earned a few weeks. If he doesn’t cut it, I’m sure this staff will can him.

Sorry I stooped to GMoney’s level, but I couldn’t help myself. People like that disgust me; even if he’s just trying to get a rise out of people it’s totally ridiculous. Anyway, I tend to give Jamall Anderson a little bit of slack. If you remember, Kerney wasn’t exactly a smash hit when he first came into the league. If I remember right it took him a good three years to really become a presence. Jamall gets the scrutiny (and for good reason) because he’s a high first round pick. But I think he will be making progress this year if he’s putting the work in.

It appears that TRON(MORON)5000 is misusing my name in an attempt at making a joke. The funny thing is, in his/her failed attempt at making a joke, he/she has actually succeeded in becoming one. You, and 21st century idiots like you, seem to have no knowledge and/or appreciation for the past. What you are too stupid to understand about the past is teams like the Raiders, Steelers, Cowboys, Bears, Packers, Bills, Rams, Vikings, Chiefs, Jets, Dolphins, etc. would love to be able to reach back into the past and relive/duplicate their past glory. The staus some of todays teams have is based on past accomplishments under past HC’s(JMadden, CKnoll, TLandry, GHalas, VLambardi, HStram, TLaundry, BGrant, DShula, etc).

Why do you think we have a Hall of Fame, some teams a Ring of Honor, if not to honor and revel and in the past, you ignorant 21st century jackass? YOU REVEALED YOUR TRUE INCOMPETENCE, IGNORANCE AND IMATURITY WHEN YOU:

1ST-STATED THAT HAVING A STONG RUSHING GAME MIGHT WIN GAMES, BUT IT WILL NOT WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS.

2ND-MY RESPONSE TO YOUR STUPID, ILL-CONCEIVED COMMENT WAS: HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF ANY FOOTBALL TEAM ON ANY LEVEL THAT’S EVER WON A CHAMPIONSHIP WITHOUT WINNING GAMES? YOU DISPLAYED YOUR IMMATURITY, AND THE FACT THAT YOU RECOGNIZED YOUR STATEMENTS STUPIDITY, WHEN YOU REFUSED TO RESPOND, OR EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE MY RESPONSE.

I’ve also noticed your habit responding to anyone that challanges your scatter brained comments by saying “DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM”? The obvious answer to that question is an emphatic NO. But one can easily ascertain from your mindless attention seeking comments and responses exactly WHAT YOU ARE. And on the positive side, trust me, THAT AIN’T MUCH.

Maybe that’s why we haven’t seen your name on these blogs since I challenged your stupid comments. Before my challenge, you were all over these blogs espousing your so called in the present, 21st century crap.

The biggest drain on our team is the one sitting in a federal pen, not Joe Horn. His 8 million cap figure is a team killer…notice how I use the phrase team and not dog…whoops I just did.

I think we all need to just relax and watch this young team and new coaching staff come together this season. I still have no idea how we will match up when the season starts but we can’t be any worse than we were last year. I think 5 wins is a definite possiblity. We lost quite a few games last year in the 4th quarter because we had no running game to control the clock and give our defense a chance to rest. Can’t wait to return to a Dan Reeves style smash mouth running game and a true pocket passing air attack.

Peace all true falcons fans!!

Frustrated, Inc. may be too young to remember Aundray Bruce — another great physical specimen and top pick who only lacked one thing — the ability to succeed at the NFL level. Jamaal appears to be an earnest, high character guy, and it’s too soon to put him into the Bruce category, but he is headed in that direction. The player doesn’t appear to have the nastiness and “want to” to play with the kind of reckless abandon that effective DEs have. Let’s hope he can raise his intensity level several notches, but the signs so far are not too promising.

I see MORON 5000 has found someone perfectly willing to engage him in man love. Good luck to you two. I have nothing further to say to you 21st century idiots.

This yrs Falcons are more talented overall than they were last yr. With better coaching, and without the internal drama and turmoil that plagued us last yrs, we might have won the 5gms that were lost by 7 or fewer pts. The overall philosophy, implementation, dedication and professionalism of this yrs coaching staff will create a winning attitude amoung the players.

Anyone saying we will go 0-16, or win fewer gms than last yr, isn’t a Falcon fan and/or is over indulging in wishful thinking. The Falcons aren’t strong or experienced enough to carry an inexperienced QB like MRyan. He may have looked good during our 1st exhibition gm. However, he won’t likely fare as well when teams have an entire week to disect his perceived weaknesses and scheme their DEF accordingly. Unless he falls flat on his face, Redman should open the season as our starting QB. It would be nice to record the names of those who have such doom and gloom predictions for the Falcons. But the truth is, if you’re a Falcon fan, you simply aren’t worth the effort or the consideration.

MRyan is a rookie and he’ll have ups and downs. Some of you, like Terrence Moore, were ready to pronounce him the regular season starter after his 1st preseason performance. Now that he’s hit a glitch, you are now ready to pronounce him a total failure.

I don’t know why some of you even waste your time watching football. You obviously have little to no concept of what you’re watching and you can’t seem to see or project beyond the moment, or the gm or play at hand.

How well the Falcons do, or how many gms they win, will depend on how well the DEF performs. I believe our rush oriented OFF will move the ball, control the clock, and put points on the board. However, how many points will depend on how well our QB’s perform, and execute our passing gm, in the redzone. Last yr, we won 4gms, and we lost 5gms by a touchdown or less. So, a more stable OFF and a better DEF could give us an advantage and helped us win those close gms. In other words, with a better DEF, we could have won those 5 gms and ended up with a 9-7 record. I think we have the talent, coaching, attitude and stability to win that many gms this yr, at least.

I think having a real MLB and moving Brookings to OLB is a definite improvement. Having GJackson back will provide a definite improvement, especially against the run. Injuries and age made DT RColeman a liability that affected both our run and pass DEF. His talents and production have dropped so drastically that I don’t know if any team has even offered him a contract as a backup. The key to our DEF will be our ability to generate an effective pass rush. If we do that, and control the run, we will have a winning season. If not, we’ll just have to look to next yr and settle for watching our young players progress and develop.

Ryan is the real deal. If you literally watched the game (not listened on the radio or only read about it the next day) if you watched Ryan run the offense you have to be thrilled. That 1st interception was all Finneran. Any half intelligent WR coach will tell you Finn HAS to come back for that ball. Finn just sat there waiting for the ball to float to him. That’s a cardinal sin for a WR. Could the ball have been thrown with more zip? Yes. Could the pass have been more to the side line? Yes, but not even Manning throws the ball perfectly every time. Finneran made the same error later in the game. I guarantee you Finn will not make the same mistake again. And a 2nd QTR dropped ball that would have resulted in a 1st down has really put Finn behind the 8 ball.
Ryan WILL start the regular season as the #1 QB, because the O’Line is better than the national pundits predicted. Are they great? No way. Are they good enough to protect Ryan as a starter from day 1? Yes. Atlanta could not have made a better pick than Ryan. I loved Dorsey but he is already hurt again. An injured Dorsey on the Falcons would have been a disater for Atlanta. GO FALCONS!

After only 2 preseason gms, teams now know they will have to stop MTurner, JNorwood and our running gm. Our new blocking scheme has allowed our OL to effectively get them past the line of scrimmage. Their size, strength and speed will do the rest. That will set our passing OFF up for play action.

Again, this is only preseason, so we need to know how effective our OL and rushing OFF will be against regular season competition before throwing MRyan in the frey. Why are some of you so obcessed with having MRyan start the season as the starter? You seem to be more interested in who starts at QB than getting the team in position to get off to a positive start. If we force him to start the season and he’s overwhelmed, and that can happen when a DEF has schemed for him, what do you do with him then? Why not ease him in over time rather than forcing him in immediately.

Our OL now knows what MTurner can do when they get him past the line of scrimmage, and that’s very positive. Once Turner gains complete confidence in his OL, he’ll start hitting the hole full speed and become even more effective. Everything else we do will come off our rushing OFF, which our coaching staff has done an excellent job of showcasing so far. Have you noticed how they’ve been incorporating our starting TE in our passing gm so far? That’s something else DEF’s will have to deal with.

Looks like good blogs are non-existent for now. I saw a team last night that was really trying. They’re young, inexperienced and on their way to a tough season. What I don’t see is a bunch of guys that care more about an issue that isn’t related to the game being played at the moment. 3 QBs will make this team and for the most part a lot of guys will learn how to win before this season is out. Those of us that have been here for many years are patient enough with Coach Smith to allow him the time it’s going to take to rebuild not only this football team but the psyches of these players that want to make this team a winner. You people that want to play with race baiting and racism will eventually go somewhere else with your small IQs and will leave us alone when we start winning. I’m a patient man. As for the QB situation, I wanna see DJ behind that 1st string OL just to see what he can do. But if I had to pick a starter right now, it would be Harrington. With that running game and some protection, he’s not so bad. Jammal really gotta step it up some. He’s not being double teamed or anything. His determination or being nasty with it is not up to par. It sure would help that DL pressure sure up some. Get that fixed and not have the coaching staff call running plays to the outside, inside the other team 10 yd line, I think they could be a pretty good team to reckon with.

Shockley has a 5.6 QB rating. He is not worthy of playing behind the 1st OL. He is a practice team player at best and will never be on an NFL roster.

RAYDKEE-you might be on to something. Most fans seem focused on having either DJ Shockey or MRyan as the starting QB. Yet, Harrington has been the most proficient and productive so far. If our rushing attack and our OL does it’s job, it will be the 1st time Harrington’s ever played in that situation. I mean Detroit, Miami, and last yr, the Falcons, WOW. He’s never played on a team that’s had anything for him to work with. You can say one thing for Harrington, he’s never lost his cool or his confidence in himself thoughout his trials and tribulations.

Wouldn’t it be something if he earned the opening day start, took advantage of this OFF and had a breakout season. It could very well happen, and what would we do with our 70M rookie QB then. And all of you UGA fans can forget about Shockey becoming a starter. Despite your fanatical, and often dillusional, support for your teams and its players, Shockey has only one(1)yr of experience as a starter since leaving high school, period. And let’s face it, the UGA is not, and I repeat, the UGA is not and has never been a hotbed for producing successful pro QB’s, even with extensive starting experience. He missed his chance at becoming a starter last yr when he got hurt. Now, his only task is to just make the team as a backup.
