Random thoughts after preseason opener

Flowery Branch - The Falcons resume practice today after losing their preseason opener to Jacksonville 20-17. It will be interesting to see what changes could be in store.

Some observations and random thoughts:

• The most positive thing about Matt Ryan was how he treated his teammates on the field. In one instance, Justin Blalock drew an illegal procedure penalty when the team was in scoring position. Instead of ignoring things or sending off bad body language, Ryan raced right up to the left guard, patted him on the back and told him not to worry about things. Things like that go a very long way in getting teammates to respect you and protect you.

• Keith Brooking looks very comfortable back at outside linebacker. Brooking was very quick to plays and was violent at the point of attack because he wasn’t having to fend off interior linemen like he did when he played in the middle.

• No word on John Abraham’s ankle. It was initially tabbed a sprain. Abe walked out of the stadium in a support boot and said he was okay, but in the past, follow-up examinations have shown to be different than the first burst of info provided to the media.

• Right guard Harvey Dahl looks as if he’s created some distance from Kynan Forney for the starting job. Dahl appeared to have a pretty good game - film study could prove different - while Forney was on the field late with the second and third-tier players. Those second and third-tier players didn’t do so well keeping backup defenders off quarterback D.J. Shockley.

• The battle for the No. 3 tailback job is going to be a doozy. Jason Snelling and Thomas Brown look very, very good. Snelling’s 47-yard gain on a screen pass was the biggest gainer of the game. Brown’s evasiveness and speed also was impressive. Brown could have the edge because he returns kicks but Snelling isn’t going down quietly. One could end up on the practice squad but other teams can pluck players off the practice squad, so whoever doesn’t make it could end up on another team’s roster.

• You have to like what you saw out of Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood. Turner really banged inside when he had to and he showed some nice bursts of speed. The Falcons used Norwood well, getting him on the edge quickly and letting him use his speed. And what about Mike Mularkey actually getting the ball to fullback Ovie Mughelli on third and short? What a novel idea.

There are a lot of things to discuss so respond with some of your takes. I’ve got to get out on the practice field.

And I would be remiss of I forgot: RIP Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes. You were both some bad Mutha “shut you mouths.”

I would not say that Brown has an edge on Snelling. Both had a good game. Snelling had a better one. He is really showing what he has and is showing speed and moves. He is a great back up. If Turner or Norwood goes down, Brown can not carry the load. Snelling can do it. Brown is going to be great after a year under his feet. Cutting Snelling is another teams prayers and ours would be a regret like losing schab. It will be great if they find a way to keep both.

Definitely Snelling over Brown.

I thought the TEAM body language was very professional! I love the initial look of this team!

There were three things that jumped out at me on the positive side.

First, the pass protection of the starting unit was outstanding. I am so accustomed to Vick running for his life that I almost had forgotten what good pass protection looked like. Although, the back-ups readily reminded me what poor protection looks like as Shockley had no time to throw.

Second, the starting secondary was truly amazing in coverage. I don’t recall a single receiver truly open in the first half. In particular on the long scramble by Garrard, they must have stayed in coverage a good 8 seconds before he scrambled downfield. Although, this does clearly show our need for a better pass rush.

Third, Ryan looked like the real thing. His throws were by no means picture perfect, but he ran the team well and seemed to make the right throws on time. Roddy made him look good a couple of times, but number one options are supposed to.

I think realistically that we’re looking at 7-9, but you never really know until they start playing the games.

i know its a little off topic but i was happy to see b-finn out htere running around and catching passes. i certainly hope he makes the team as our 4th/5th WR. i really think he has the ability to beat out mike jenkins if it is given. at the very least he is a great red-zone option given his height and hands.

  • Ryan looked the part, still think Redman should be the starter and given a fair shake the first couple of regular season games. In the past 20 years only two rookie QBs have started more than 10 games on a non-losing team. Ben Roethlisberger was on the 15-1 Pittsburgh team, but that success had little to do with Ben. Tennessee finished 8-8 when Vince Young led them to an 8-5 finish after an 0-3 start with him on the bench. If we can win those two winnable games to start the season with Redman, keep the momentum going. If you lose 3 or 4 to start the season, turn it over to Ryan. If somehow Redman looks good he could be used to get a later round pick for a QB starved team. I’m not holding my breath, but he didn’t cost anything so it’s worth a shot.

  • Michael Turner is everything we hoped T.J. Duckett would be. He just flat out runs with a purpose and is fun to watch. I think we’ll look smart for that pick up.

  • Thought the o-line looked good all things considered. I’m really excited about the long term potential of Baker and Blalock and love seeing the unknown Harvey Dahl emerge.

  • The defense is going to be a mess because I don’t think we’ll be able to stop the run consistently at all. Liked the effort from Brent Grimes, but I don’t think he’s a long term solution.

allthough theere is a long way to go before the falcons will be considered a good football team, I liked the way they played saturday night. They played like a team, which is really good to see. How well they do this year , who knows . It was just nice to see the Falcons playing ball the way they did.

Keep Snelling and place Brown on the practice squad. If someone wants Snelling, they can trade for him. We’ll still have talent coming up from the practice squad.

I think this offense is going to be good. The defense is, I think, going to get better. I like Brent Grimes’ and Chevis Jackson’s play on saturday despite the Jaguars’ lack of a passing game.

Hey Steve, what happened to Falcon’s report on on-demand?

Was not able to watch the game, I live in NC (which sucks during football season!!). From what I saw from the highlights of Ryan was a command and confidence that I do not see from Harrington or Redmond. I think Ryan will be ok and if the o-line continues to protect him and get better over pre-season he should play on opening day.

Wyche, can you write about the coaching staff and how the players are relating to these coaches vs. last year.

An important part of Dimitroff’s legacy is going to be how his mid-round draft picks perform. I’d say Curtis Lofton looked great (is 2nd round a “mid-round” pick?). I’d also say Kroy Biermann looked really good. Kroy is definitely a mid-round pick. How did Thomas DeCoud perform? Dimitroff’s specialty is supposed to be cornerbacks and safeties. DeCoud was a mid-round pick and a safety, so he should be a “canary in the coalmine” for what to expect from Dimitroff’s draft picks.

Matt Ryan looked okay. His accuracy wasn’t the best at first, but he was making some good reads. He did complete 7 of 8 passes at one point. He’ll get better in no time flat. As it is, our running game will help protect him some.

Snelling has had chances to prove himself last year. Yes he looked good in this game, but it is extremely important that your 3rd string RB can contribute on special teams with a 53 man roster. Snelling does punt protection but can’t return kicks. We dont have Rossum anymore and Jennings clearly isn’t going to make this team. I personally would like to keep both but people are more likely to pickup a kick returner than a slow RB that is too small for FB. Brown is more solid than Dunn and bigger than Tiki who were both “pretty” successful.

I loved Roddy making a tough catch that he wouldnt have made 2 years ago. I was impressed by Grimes.

I had the pleasure of being at the game in Jacksonville (btw, outdoor stadiums in the south are the way to go) and I must say, this team showed a lot of promise. The defense was put in really sticky situations at the beginning of the game due to great field position by poor performances of the defense and special teams, but they didn’t allow any points until very late in the quarter.

Second, I too was very impressed with Matt Ryan. Sure I was looking for the play-performance, but his off-field performance and how he was received by his teamates was another thing I liked. He took command of the huddle, wasn’t afraid to audible (in his very first play I might add), and he TRUSTED his receivers to make great plays.

Though I really could care less about who is our third string quarterback as he most likely won’t play a meaningful snap, it seems enough people do so I’ll add this much. Because he isn’t apt to making a game-changing mistake, and runs a conservative offensive game that can be effective at times, I would give the job to the veteran, Joey Harrington. He enginereed the most points (10) and did not make any rediculous mistakes like throwing a ball up in the endzone on third down. Not saying that it cost us the game (Elam did), but if you were looking for rookie mistakes, that’s it in a nutshell.

Looking forward to seeing us play Indianapolis, hope that our offense can continue to improve and that Ryan can continue to grow into a leader.

Ryan was definitely the better on-field quarterback. He showed poise and a quick release. He was confident in what he was trying to do. The offensive line benefitted from his quick release and blocked mok on the running plays. I like the receiving corps, they ran crisp routes and caught the ball pretty well. I still hope a tackle or guard comes available through some cuts, but it would have to be the right situation and not someone old. The running backs looked good and the defense needs help in the d-line. Overall, a nice step in the right direction.

It was nice seeing Ovie get some grabs. The boy is just plain huge - Hes going to stun this year.

Ryan looked excellent in his first NFL game. As nervous as I was, i can ONLY imagine how he felt. Next week we’ll see more light - Guaranteed.

My feelings on Shockley were not really swayed by the game, i want to see him work with the first unit before i call him a bust. We’ll see….

Other QB’s - well, you know…they were there. Harrington gets my props for the TD run, he took a major hit and still moved forward for the score…if no one else will give him the credit - i will.

Come on NEXT WEEKEND!

Go birds.!.

I thought Redman was off, Harrington looked well and probably will get better with more time in the offense. Shockley looked strong, but I think him working with the 3rd unit made him look worse than he really was. Ryan looked well, I don’t know if he’s ready to start. I still think we should wait a year before we put him in the line of fire.

keep 4 backs.

Brown returns kicks and punts. Jennings should be cut today. Horn, cut him last year. Brown has the hands and toughness to return kicks.

Snelling backs up Mughelli and can be an excellent NFL back. Snelling blocks well too. He’s done everything he’s been given a chance to do well in any situation.

They do not need to let Snelling get away.

I thought Ryan handled himself well. I would still look through the waiver wire for a seasoned qb because neither Redman nor Harrington is going to make it. Sorry Bulldogs fans, Shockley isn’t going to make it neither. The o-line looked okay. McClure, Forney, and Weiner need to be backups. Jenkins is on his way out of there because of Finneran. Anderson is one the 1st round bust watch and G. Jackson’s play is showing everyone why McKay and Petrino should not have a job at the Falcons. All and all, I still think the team won’t win more than 3 - 5 games this year. They are on the way though.

Good stuff so far.

  1. John Abraham’s ankle isn’t bad. Just a mild sprain. Coach Mike Smith wasn’t sure if Abe will play vs. the Colts Saturday, but Abe will be okay.

  2. I do plan on writing how the players are getting along with the coaches but I really like to see how things play out a little longer. At this time of the season, everything almost always good. A few games in, when there might be some losses, injuries or other adversity, that’s when the coach-player relationship bears it’s true self — good, bad or indifferent. At this time last year, everything looked cool with Petrino and the players and we know how that turned out.

  3. As for Falcons report on TV, I think something could be developing but I honestly have no idea. If they ask, I’d love to do it again.

Thanks.

Are you kidding? Harrington looked terrible. He “engineered” a TD drive by giving the Ball to Snelling for a 47 yard run. I could do that. Unfortunately Shockley was average at best. That duck he threw into the end zone at the end was U-G-L-Y. I was hoping for a lot more out of him. He did evade the rush extremely well and had a couple of nice throws, though.

You know, I may be wrong down the road but I think Snelling is an NFL rb now!! He should have been the starter last year instead of Dunn. He runs with power and has good speed and elusiveness. I am just not sure how Norwood is going to last very long. Yes he has the speed but it seems he is too easy to go down … a one-hand tackle brings him down most every time. Seems as though he lacks leg strength to break tackles. I say play Snelling along with Turner and move Jerious to WR and keep Brown as the backup. Dump Horn, Jennings. I like the way the birds played last Saturday, everyone just needs more reps and the BIG BIRDS are gonna fly.

First of all, let me give my ultimate props to the offensive line for looking like an NFL Offensive Line. Harvey Dahl (#73) & Tyson Clabo (#77) looked absolutely outstanding. I feel justified in saying this since the Defense that they went up against were ranked #4 in the NFL last year! Sam Baker & Justin Blaylock looked tremendous, especially the pancake block that Baker put on Paul Slicer of the Jags in the 2nd Quarter (that was a nasty streak that I loved watching). I don’t mind the penalties by Clabo and Dahl initially because they were sending a message that things won’t be tolerated like they used to in the past (great signs). Alex Stepanovich & Ben Wilkerson (Centers) looked awesome. In particular on one play, Stepanovich was blocking on a screen play and was down field too early, but did anyone notice how he was driving the Jags defensive players around like they were rag dolls? Aggressiveness is something that thsi coaching staff is preaching, and by the attitudes of the 1st and 2nd units, you can tell that the messgae has been received loud and clear! Michael Turner is as advertised; Jerious Norwood is still the speed merchant. Thomas Brown held on to every kick-off and advanced the ball no less than 23 yards I believe on every return. Jason Snelling looked extremely comfortable in this sysytem (amazing what your second year will do for your confidence level). Matt Ryan will be awesome as time goes on! Chris R. still looked like the steady veteran. I think DJ looked great if you take under consideration that he wasn’t afforded the same protection as the other 3 QB’s (let’s watch him when he gets his opportunity with the first unit, plus, this was his first game since his knee injury). Brent Grimes was outstanding; I have NEVER seen DeAngelo Hall cover anyone that closely - consistently (we just may have found a true diamond in the rough there)! The entire secondary played really well comapred to last year’s unit (and this was mostly with first & second year players - WOW)! The linebackers reminded me of the old Grits Blitz with their swarming and sticking it to the backs & receivers (did you notice how they were all in position to make plays, not off somewhere in LA LA Land? Curtis Lofton is the second coming of Tommy Nobis & Jessie Tuggle. He truly deserves to be considered as the first front line MLB. Keith look so comfortable back at his true position, and Michael Boley is still lighting it up (please sign him to a long term contract before this year is up)! Michael Jenkins still looks like Michael Jenkins. I have never seen a Wide Receiver from Ohio State that I liked. Harry Douglass reminds me of Wes Welker, and Roddy White, if he continues to improve, may just get his wish, and make the Pro Bowl this year!

Game 1 - Grade B - Let’s See If There Is More Good Improvements To Come

PS. Jason Elam and Michael Koenen still need alot of work on placing the snap on the ground just where Jason likes it. But that will come with time!

Got a question for you, Steve. How good are Snelling’s pass catching skills? From what I understand, the Falcons a lacking a pass-catching H-back / TE. I’m not suggesting that Jason make a wholesale switch to tight end, but given the lack of alternatives, I wonder what kind of play-making HB he could be for this season. Has Mularkey considered this, or is my idea just too far fetched?

Ok, I thought Snelling was in the vicinity of 240 lbs. At 232, I guess he would be too small to play HB.

I liked the way the backs ran the ball, although I’m a little concerned that everything Norwood is in the game, the defense will know he’s going to try to cut outside. It appeared on a couple of his runs he might have gained more staying inside, but he seems to naturally head out. Ryan did good for his first game, but it is way too early to say if he should be the starter. Joey and DJ impressed me more than Redman.

Thanks Steve for the updates.

First and foremost I was very, very nervous watching Ryan come out on the field for his first series. I was very impressed though. He is a very smart QB. Even thought the ball got slipped from his hand on one play, he maintained his composure and still had time to fall on the ball, also the O line good on getting him that extra second. His accuracy was a little off, but that will come in time no worries. Overall I give him a solid A on going out there and really encouraging his guys and showing command. DJ should have taken the sack on the last play, that did not favor good for him in my book. Good scrambling, but we don’t necessarily need that anymore, since Ryan does really well out of the pocket on the bootleg.

I was really, really impressed with the O line overall. I was more surprised than anything. Everyone has doubted our O line all offseason, but I think they were actually one of the better units out there. Great job.

Tuner “the burner” was absolutely awesome to watch and so was Norwood. He can really cut them up in the open field. They are going to be a force to be reckoned with.

The secondary and Brent Grimes especially were amazing. Grimes has some “ups” and he wasn’t afraid to make a play on the ball. It is one thing to provide good coverage, but it is another thing to go after the ball too. GREAT job secondary.

I hate to say it but the only real problem I had was with run defense for the second string and the kicking game. I hope Elam can figure that out quick. If he would have made the two he missed we would have won the game.

Falcons get a B+ overall, and an A++ in a better team that last years!

I, for one, hope that WATL (Channel 36) never broadcasts another game. The picture was just plain awful when the game was on live and was no better on Sunday when the NFL Network televised a replay of the WATL production. In the future, I will not waste my time watching any game that is not broadcast in HD.

It seemed Ryan threw behind recievers most of his time and did you notice how accurate and quick on the release D.J was, he needs more snaps to prove his value to the new coach, like maybe the second guy in the rotation. Was that a great catch Roddy White made for the T.D.,that was all him the ball was thrown behind him. Boy I hate instant replay, Iwas afraid this would happen. Replay is just a tool to control the game. Drew Pearson and Lynn Swan would have had half of those great sideline catches over ruled. You can’t make a great play anymore. I suppose I just miss the game as it was, you know before they changed rules from year to year. You can bet the Mannings of the world would never have put up the numbers a Unitas did with like rules, don’t breathe on the reciever when he goes by and for heaven’s sake don’t pull on the QB’S dress when you try to sack him.

Oh me oh my! I know its preseason but I liked what I saw out of the Birds Sat. First it is going to be so-oooooo nice to see this Falcon team with a REAL running back. Michael Turner is the truth! And with Ovie Mughelli leading the way teams are going to be straight worn out just in time to have “lightning in a bottle” J Norwood come in and zip right on by- can’t wait to see that. As for Matty “Ice”- nice job! Poised like a vet out there for real. Lead the team right to a score right after a not so spectacular 1st series. Also, I’m going to miss calling Roddy White “Ten Fingers of Death”- heck I might just end up wearing dude’s jersey by the time this season is over with..lol Now the bad news: THE D-LINE STILL STINKS! I really, really, realllly hope that was just one game cause man did that look familiar. It looked like the Running of Bulls out there the way the Jags were running thru our D-line. Of course the linebackers looked good since the tackles weren’t doing squat! Gotta fix that Coach Smith- just gotta (tear, sniff) Anyway I’m just glad to have some NFL football back in the picture- they ought to make them play this game year ‘round…peace and

Team is making progress; how encouraging. I would caution not to get too excited, it is after all, pre-season. But, there are definitely some major positives. Ryan looked great; I say he has a ways to go before he’s really ready though. Let’s see him play a few more preseason games before we get carried away.

Snelling. This guy looked great before he was put on the practice squad last year. He appears to be the real deal and should be given a chance. I like somones suggestion that Norwood could be a receiver, Brown KO & Punt duty and special teams and Snelling #3 back. Cut jennnings…he’s worthless.

Grimes looked great; the o-line looked great; the DL is a problem as you all know…maybe we can get some help on the cut wire.

The thing I liked most about the game were the coaches decisions; especially the play calling and clock management. Kudos; keep it up!

Peace! Go Falcons!!!

I would have loved to see us win just for the sake of the guys. That really doesn’t matter though, these guys look coached and under control and like they’re having fun. They gotta have fun to develope that chemistry. We may be a year or two off. It may take time to put all the pieces togther, but we need to keep it positive and stand behind them. They look like they are difinitley headed in the right direction. And when you’re headed in the right direction you never know exactly when it’s going to really take off! Team first Team First Team first goes a long way. Go Falcons! Good Job!

“i ain’t scared of you mother**’s”. I must admit P Ryan has the look and body language of a real NFL QB. I hope they find a way to keep both Snelling and Brown and a way also to get another veteran pass rushing DE like say “a cat that won’t cop out when there’s danger all about” RISP Isaac and Bernie.

Attitude and Hustle stuck out more than anyone one thing I saw during the game. Whether it was early or late in the game, the team hustled. That is a sign of a coaching staff that motivates.

Ryan looksed good but was actually off on many of his passes but the receivers made some nice catches. Ryan’s accuracy will improve with practice and experience. Definitely the QB of the future.

Overall I thought both sides of the ball looked pretty good.

Keep that intensity with thoughts on improvement each week.

Goooooooooo Falcons

Ryan surpassed my already high expectations. Outstanding poise.

For a first preseason game under a new regime, great job overall, O & D!

Brown vs. Snelling?

Answer: BOTH - look at the numbers. Means 1 less OL, WR, or DB.

In return, you get your K/O returner and your best #3 RB (sorry DAWGS, they ain’t the same person).

Any questions?

Thank you for everyone who mentioned how HORIFIC the production was of this game on MyATL. It looked like my 3 year old niece was behind the camera. The picture quality was the worst I’ve seen in 10 years and the audio sucked. Half the plays weren’t even seen because the camera guy was drunk. Please….NEVER AGAIN!

Steve:I have been thinking of that competition between T.Brown and Snelling, and wondered what a lovely problem to have.I thought Snelling should have made the team last year and I am hoping that we can find a way to keep both of them. However if the decision is made to carry only three RB’s then T.Brown will get the edge, because in addition to his abilities on special team, he will be able to spell Norwood, who we know is injury prone, whereas Turner is a bruiser and will get the carries when we need to punch it in the end Zone from within the 10 Yard line. Snelling made more sense last year with Dunn and Norwood, been the only backs on the team.

I agree that the 3rd string RB competition may be the most intriguing position battle on the team. I hope that we end up keeping both guys around. Thomas Brown can return kicks while Jason Snelling backs up Thunder & Lightning. Some say that Snelling should back up Ovie, but you must remember that Corey McEntyre is the captain of speial teams so we need him around. Hopefully Adam Jennings will finally get cut so we can make room for both running backs to remain on the 53-man roster.

The glaring weakness of this team is the massive holes created by the defensive tackles being pushed outside of the middle. I’m starting to believe that J.Anderson should just put on weight and move to DT because of how effective he is against the run, coupled with how terrible he is with a speed rush. No matter what happens, we must draft a defensive tackle with our first pick in 2009, no ifs ands or buts about it.

Having said that, the linebackers were effective and well as the secondary (very physical play from both starting corners). Roddy’s going to make a strong case for the Pro Bowl this season, but someone has to step up at the 2nd reciever because Jenkins is still making the same mistakes he made in 2007. No improvement whatsoever. Douglas and Finneran should be considered for the other starting spot.

The backfield looked outstanding, all backs. Ryan was solid and poised - a little inaccurate but still had good presence and stepped up in his throws. Redman was ehh, Joey was ugh, Shockley was okay but needs step up his accuracy.

Kudos to the offensive line for showing some grit out there and the coaching staff for calling a sensible (preseason) game. No head scratchers coming for the coordinators, we should toast to that if nothing else hahaha

Dont forget Dallas was interested in Snelling.

By littlebird

August 12, 2008 6:41 AM | Link to this

I’ll bet if Jason Snelling is not kept on the active roster he will be gone. Dallas is not the only team that is interested and will grab him off the practice squad. As I said before, this dude is for real … just give him the ball and watch, almost always positive yards … unlike the speed back Norwood. You can just touch Norwood and he’ll fall backward but you better be fast if you want to touch him!

I am with Gumbo, keep Snelling and Brown. Both have up side to produce this season. Just an overall observation… this team is so much more professional looking than anything in recent history. May not translate to a ton of victories this year but they will beat some folks that the past Falcons had no chance to win. This team will not be beat just getting off the bus as in past.

If we are to be like Pittsburgh our only RB that is smash mouth is Turner so I keep Snelling to give him some relief. I say Brown is our kick returner like Rossum was so this is how we justify another RB. If we are to be like Pittsburgh we need to be running back heavy. With a possibility of a rookie QB like Ryan running the team we need as much help running the ball as we can to make sure our young QB does not take it on himself to be our savior this year.

Matt Ryan may be a good guy, great. I saw nothing that impressed me overly. I am that rare minority, a Joey homer. How tough is Joey, he got slammed and still made it into the endzone for a TD! It scares me how vulnerable our D-line is, and if Abe is injured now or at all during the season, where will we be?? We got zero pressure on Garrard. Sure would be nice to have a 2 pronged defensive end attack. I still say Anderson is a big bust. That’s why Rich McKay is handling tickets now. The receivers look good, go Finn, go go go!!!! The running backs do look good, love that crazy legs Norwood! Hope Elam was just working out some kinks cause we’re going to need those fieldgoals! I just think it’s a shame that the QB’s on the bubble are probably Joey or DJ. Can’t we just cut Redmon instead? I think he makes more $$ than Joey, so cut him! Keith B. looks rejuventated, good for him. But I wish wish wish we still had Pat Kerney playing opposite Abe, how awesome would that be? Brent “Grimy” Grimes is the type of player I love to watch, undersized but tough & feisty! Still say it’s going to be a long year….

I didn’t see the gm, but I’ve read most of the reports on it. I mentioned in an earlier post that our DB’s might be young and inexperienced, but that in itself doesn’t mean they won’t be good. I also stated our DEF would determine our degree of success this season. GJackson will make a tremendous difference in our rushing DEF. I doubt if our DLinemen went all out on pass rushes. I also doubt if we used any stunts or shifts to 3/4 DEF sets in the gm.

Both our OFF and DEF will improve going into the season, barring any major injuries. The early injuries we’re suffering now will help us weather some of those same injuries during the season.

We’ve gone from having no QB’s to compete last yr to 4 that are going after it this yr. We’ve added depth and versatility at almost every position. The new positive attitudes that now exist amoung the players and coaches will also have a positive effect on the team. If we establish a strong rushing OFF during preseason, and intill in the minds of the opposition they will have to stop that attack, we can get off to a strong start and have a very good season. GOOOO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!!!

Is it too much to ask to get a Falcons blog every day? How about every weekday? AJC.com does them for every other major team but not the NFL one. There isn’t a pro market newspaper in the country with worst NFL coverage. Starts with the editors, tweedledee and tweedledumb. Especially the guy who picks the front every day. The one in the “Print” department, my AJC friends tell me it’s called.

What a shame that we lost two great men like Bernie and Isaac but worthless wastes of human-like flesh such as Vick and Blank still draw breath!

How could any REAL MAN ever rape a poor dog like Vick done and be proud of it like he done something?

Mathew,if the coach would’nt of made a rediculous call going for it on 4th and 12,then a rediculous throw as you call it would’nt of been made. You grade sorry harrington against 2nd and 3rd stringers and then say keep him?it really shows that your like harrington not having a clue about football.I haven’t heard anyone mention the coaching at the end of this game.He stated(coach smith) he wanted to win,but did’nt kick a field goal to tie the game.Question, have he not have faith in his million dollar new kicker?if shockley would’nt of made 4th and 12 fans would’ve been questioning his decision.but noooooooo! shockley gets the blame.

Please remember the pre-season and 30 plus players on each side of the field who will be home watching games or in the stands. Players who look like all pro in the pre-season get cut. Don’t get caught up in a fluke play. That player may never run for 50 yards on another play ever again. Thats way the pre season stats don’t go in the record books! I predict Joe Horn, DJ Shockley, Adam Jennings, Thomas Brown, Jason Snelling will be bye bye when the season opener is played.

Keep Turner, Norwood and Snelling, in that order intact before even looking at the other running backs. That combo will win some games. Done correctly, these 3 are your “starters”. I’d make sure they all got touches in the games. Anyone else you keep are the backups.

Normally, I like to sit a rookie QB for a year and normally I believe it turns out to be warranted. I believe Ryan will be starting sooner than most of us anticipated than we did a month ago. So, the QB we keep isn’t really going to be our starter. He will be our backup…and soon. Someone who will not get a attitude about it but instead will be a pro and try and lead the team IF Matt goes down.

Glad to have Grady back. I like the chemistry being created. I like the hustle in the team. I’m thinking that the D line will be good when all starters are playing. Props go to the O line, who I all along thought were poorly coached last year. I think we really do have some talented guys there and they will surprise a lot of folks this season.

Looking forward to some NFL in a way I didn’t really feel last year.
