Falcons back on the grind

The Falcons hit the practice fields at Flowery Branch this morning after having Sunday off. (A big thanks to my partner “Big Stevie Wyche” for holding things down over the weekend which allowed me to have a great time at my Family Reunion! I didn’t win the Madden Championship, my cheating Uncle Gerald Paschal took home that trophy!)

With the preseason opener set for Saturday in Jacksonville, practices figure to be a little more spirited this week. You know, the guys get tired of hitting each other after a couple of weeks and will welcome going up against some real, live opposition.

As the week unfolds, here are a couple of themes to keep tabs on:

• What will the quarterback rotation be for the game and how much time with Matt Ryan get?

• The Falcons have spent a lot of time re-tooling the running game. Will they be able to run the ball against Jacksonville’s first-string defense?

• Todd Weiner has been eased back in after major knee surgery. He’s aiming for the second game, but it will be interested to see how he holds up under an increased work load. Getting Weiner back could go a long ways to stabilizing the offensive line.

• How will the young corners hold up? The Falcons could start Chris Houston (second year) and Brent Grimes (second year) and use Chevis Jackson (rookie) as the nickel back. That’s awfully young at that position.

• Will rookie Curtis Lofton start stepping up at middle linebacker? He looks like the real deal.

Check back with us later to see how these themes are developing.

One question you forgot:

  • When will D.J. Shockley be sent packing (after the Falcons wasted a 7th round pick on this bust)?

Are the TE’s catching balls in practice ?

I heard over the weekend they looked pretty rough catching the ball at the scrimmages at Mill Creek and the Dome ?

On a side note. I can’t wait to see Turner run at 100 % the first pre-season game. Hopefully he can give us the power running game we have lacked and sorely missed in the red zone.

Yeah dude is tripping, can’t be a bust if you are drafted after the 5th round and I bet he beats Matt Ryan out for the job, stronger arm and can run. Did you see hoe soft matt ryan throws at the Sat practice game!!!!! He’s going to have a long season if he sees the field, GO UGA and Shockley!!!!! Oh and free Mike Vick so he can play some where else! LOL

I just do not get the Falcons thought process. I went to the Mill Creek scrimage and DJ looked by far the best QB. He was the most accurate and by far the most mobile. Lets face it the Falcons are going to be AWFUL this year, but I would turn on the TV to watch DJ. I will not turn it on to watch Redman or Harrington. I like Ryan’s potential but he is at least a year away - did not look good during scrimage. All you DJ haters need to get a life - you have no facts to back up your hate for him.

Thanks Orlando. Could you and Steve please try to do some interviews with assistant coaches? We’re all real hungry for information about the re-building of this team. Anything on what schemes will be run on offense and defense, and especially on player competition at various positions, would be great. What I’m getting at is: p-l-e-a-s-e more stuff! Thanks.

What can it hurt to play D.J.? He is from a winning program and can’t hurt something that is already hurt. He needs a chance.

Oh, by the way, Georgia will no longer be called the Bulldogs, but the “Crime-dogs.” Richt needs to get hold of the situation. Image means a lot.

No facts to bash D.J.?

FACT: He was 3 for 11 in the scrimmage. He Does not have an accurate arm.

FACT: He is too short to be an NFL QB.

FACT: He barely made the team after he was drafted (in the 7th round).

FACT: He is too small and brittle to be in the NFL (he got hurt after barely being touched in a pre-season game).

FACT: If shockley had not gone to UGA (a.k.a. Felony U.), he would have been cut a long time ago.

I really think this team will be better than anyone thinks. I worry more about he OL than the CB positions. Smitty has proven that his defenses do not need superstar CBs and Jax never had that good of a pass rush. With G-Jack commanding two lineman maybe it will help the pash rush. I can’t believe J Anderson will have a year like last year. I hope the brass are smart enough to see the advantage of keeping shockey over J harrington I like him but he has had his shots in the NFL. I think Shockey will turn out to be a good NFL quarterback especially in a run first offense.

This is so ridiculous. DJ Shockley a bust? He’s a 7th round project QB. Those guys can’t be busts. I don’t think DJ is going to be sent packing. Matt Ryan is obviously going to either start or be in the “Sit and learn, come off the bench for a series or two per game backup QB” so that means DJ is likely going to be the #3 QB. Teams seem to keep developmental type guys like DJ as the 3rd qb. I think if anyone is going to get cut, its going to be Joey. You know what he is, and you aren’t going to win with him and his presence will just take reps away from the other guys you want to develop.

DJ … I have to agree with Will about one thing. Shockley isn’t tough enough for the NFL. The guy is made of glass and just can’t take the big hits. He has a decent arm and speed but lacks endurance.

Matt Ryan … He certainly isn’t a very big lad is he? He looked tiny and out of place on Saturday at the dome. I can’t believe he got all that money and hasn’t even played a “big-boy” game yet.

Harrington … At least he’s got a few chops.

2008-09 Season … I’m thinking more like 2009-10.

On a positive note… The upgrades to the GA Dome were way overdue. It does look a lot better in there.

hee, hee … UGA has more problems with the law. Just when ya’all Dawgs thought you had it all wrapped up…. #1 ????

FACT: He was 3 for 11 in the scrimmage. He Does not have an accurate arm.

This remains to be seen, he hasn’t played enough.

FACT: He is too short to be an NFL QB.

He is 6 feet tall, not the prototypical size, but not too short. Vick was 6 feet tall. Montana, Mcnabb, Tarkenton are some examples under 6’2”, and they are pretty darn good.

FACT: He barely made the team after he was drafted (in the 7th round).

Barely? He beat out Bryan Randall (not too hard to do) he wasn’t going to be the starter (Vick) or back up (Shaub).

FACT: He is too small and brittle to be in the NFL (he got hurt after barely being touched in a pre-season game).

The injury he sustained has nothing to do with being brittle or small, it’s something that just happens on turf. Just ask Jamal Anderson, he isn’t brittle or small and he suffered the same injury…twice!

FACT: If shockley had not gone to UGA (a.k.a. Felony U.), he would have been cut a long time ago.

How so? He played as the third stringer as a rookie and got hurt last year, why would you cut him? It’s not like he’s a journeyman that’s been in the league for years, give the man a chance!

B.O.P., On the field, he wasn’t. He made this sorry a$$ franchise relevant. There won’t be a televised game in atlanta for the next 5-10 years. Vick carried this sorry franchise on his back and you know it, you just don’t have the balls to admit it. Inaccurate passes? What about the hundreds of passes that were dropped, as was the problem in their recent scrimmage? At least I’m man enough to admit that #7 messed up big time, and he deserved to go to jail, not for 2 years, but it already written in stone. Vick could beat out all of the “QBs” even after having 3 years off. You have your “pocket passer” now. Lets see what he does when the defense is in the backfield as soon as Ryan takes the snap. You people say you want DJ to start because he has mobility. When you had the most gifted player in the history of the NFL on you rteam, you people blamed him for everything. Thats why I hate the falcons. Arthur Blank handled the situation the way he was supposed to handle it, I actually respect him. Its you fans that are the idiots. No matter what Vick did on the field, you people complained and expected him to be perfect. Vick worked miracles with nothing. Its virtually the same team that Vick had, and I can’t wait to see how Ryan handles the pressure, although he won’t be criticized as much because he’s white. Its a shame

My guess is the Falcon’s won’t run on the Jag’s starters, but when the starters come out the birds should start to take over the game. Jacksonville played well last year so their back-ups are playing for bench space. The Falcon’s second and third teamers have real chances of earning starting jobs. Expect to see a little more motivation on our side of the ball. The Jag’s should win the first half, but the Falcon’s should win the game. I know it’s just pre-season, but after last year I’ll take whatever we can get.

rofl at the morons still defending Vick - hey guys, here’s a clue. No one cares that Vick is black. What they seem to care about more is 1. Vick wasn’t a very good QB and 2. Vick is a freaking FELON. If matt ryan doesnt get too much criticism next season its because he’s a ROOKIE. He’s pretty much guaranteed to suck. Also, this falcons team is a WHOLE HELL of a lot worse than anything Vick had to work with. I’d be shocked if this team won 3 games, and that’s WITH Matt Ryan not falling totally flat on his face. Get over it; vick stunk and is a terrible human being and now he’s gone. I think you are more upset that he was run out of town and now a WHITE DUDE is the QB for the Falcons. Who’s the racist now?

Easy E, I agree w/that. i just find it funny that these very people were at the games cheering their asses off, and now he’s a loser. i just call it how I see it. i really don’t want it to be a race thing, but all you see on here is “Vick’s a thug” and all that other BS. It’s funny how they did the same things to Deion and Nique when they played here, ran them out of town. I know a few white fans that do support him. My main reason for supporting him besides him being my favorite player is that I like to see people redeem themselves, white or black. I wouldn’t mind seeing Harrington prove people wrong, but that will never happen.

D.J. was a great college quarterback that rather than bolting UGA as a back-up to David Greene, he stayed with the program and had an excellent senior year. His loyalty was admired. He could have started for most programs as a sophomore.

By sacrificing those years, he lost a lot of reps and experience. If some team is willing to spend some time and effort with him, he would make a great back-up and bring a scrambling speed option to the standard drop-back formation. D.J. was loyal to UGA and we are to him.

I never comment on these blogs, but there is some stupid stuff being said. First of all, why do people have to keep bringing race up. Vick is in jail, because he fought dogs and is a complete idiot. I don’t care how good he WAS, he blew it and any white person fighting dogs would have been treated the same way. As for the height comparison, who cares if Shockley is Vick’s height, Vick’s playmaking ability compensated for that, and DJ will NEVER have that. He’s not an NFL QB and Ryan is the right height and has great accuracy. He just needs time to adjust to the speed of the NFL. I bet he play’s by mid-season. But seriously, who cares about Vick anymore. It’s a dead subject and there’s no use talking about someone who will never play another down for us again, and who never really had any passing ability to begin with. He just used his feet to make plays. And as everyone can see, his numbers went down every year, cause defenses figured out how to defend him anyway. SO DROP IT!!!

Paul A:

What a idiot! DJ Shockley isn’t tough enough for the NFL? He is the best chance the Falcons have to winning this season. With the weak offensive line and the impact of the premier pass rushers in our division, you better have a QB that can move around in the pocket.

Have you forgotten that the Saints have 2 nice Defensive Ends and just drafted Cedric Ellis at DT. The Bucs have Gains Adams—Carolina has Peppers— and we have a Rookie possibly starting at Left tackle.

Then what do you think about Chris Redman and Joey “Smoey” Harrington? I can’t believe that either of those guys are collecting NFL checks… Joey Harrington is a bust (#3 pick in the NFL draft) and the fact that the Falcons have resigned him to a 2yr deal indicates that I made the right decision to forgo my season tickets, which I have held for the past 10 season.

I don’t believe many of you bloggers have any idea about football… Please don’t write on this blog again!

lolbutthurtVickFans, why can’t i be a fan of my favorite player? Why can’t I want him to redeem himself, like he will? I’m sure you would like to see Pete Rose get in the hall of fame, as he should be, there’s nothing wrong with that. Now, as far as Vick sucking as a qb, that is incorrect. #1. Arthur sure didn’t seem to think so, having given him a 130 million contract. #2. The dome was sold out every game for 7 years. #3. You judge a qb by WINS, not qb ratings and passing percentages. having a winnig record as a starter means you’re a pretty good qb. How many good qbs can you name that had winning records as starter and sucked as a qb. if there is some, there’s not very many of them. If he sucks so badly, why has the entire franchise from the top down fallen apart? Why cant they complete a pass? Why can’t they run the ball anymore? Why can’t they do anything but go 4-12 and be the laughing stock of the NFL if Vick sucks so badly? Whatever excuses you make, I can say one thing, you came to the games to see Mike Vick, as did the rest of the city. Vick’s gone and now you can hear crickets in the dome, lol. Franchises don’t totally fall apart if they lose a qb that sucks. Bottom line

I am a white male who LOVED Vick. I was a big fan of his in college, and was thrilled when the Falcons drafted him. I always defended him to some ignorant people who didn’t like him because of his race. I stood behind him with the flipping off and even the Miami water bottle episode. When he was accused of dog-fighting, I told people to wait for the facts, innocent until proven guilty, and he professed innocence. When he admitted guilt and I found out he was lying to Mr. Blank and all of the fans, I felt betrayed by a guy that I had always rooted for and defended. Yes, he carried the Falcons, but he lied to the team and the city. I hope he gets out and can resume his life, but the Falcons have to move on from the mess he created. I was a fan of the Falcons before him and I will pull for them after. I just want the blog to be about the players we have and the problems we face. I wish we could quit talking about Vick or anyone else that is not here.

Also, please quit acting like the Falcons gave up on Vick, and as a result deserve to lose. You think they wanted him to fight dogs and go to jail? I think they wanted nothing more than for him to be innocent and QB the team last year and for the next decade. HE prevented that. So please, no more shots at the Falcons for Vick being gone.

Matt Ryan CANNOT throw a deep out.

He was inaccurate in college.

His TD/INT ratio was consistently lose to 1.

He was the 4th best QB in the ACC during his senior year (Cullen Harper, Matt Grothe, and Jameel Sewell).

His contract contract is $74 million more than DJ’s?

IMO, the defening silence on Ryan from Falcon insiders is TELLING. This guy was the #3 pick. The only consistent praise is his command of the offensive huddle. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

How people are going back and forth over DJ Shockley… you would think DJ was the $75 million #3 pick in the draft.

I can remember some other late rounds QB picks that turned out to be pretty damn good..See Tom Brady. So give Shockley credit where it is due. If he performs better than Joey, Chris, Matt..give him the ball. To the Vick haters & supporters..why are we still arguing about this? Whats done is done. He was the face of the franchise..thats in the past now. Whether we will stink for the next few years is up to the current players & staff. Vick was Vick..he made his choices, now he must pay the consequences. Lets move on PLEASE!!

I wasn’t at the scrimmage on Friday night, but I saw the simulated game at the dome. I don’t know if Shockley will be the starter but he gave the best showing on Saturday and should receive strong consideration for a roster spot. He did more with less talent.

I think Ryan still has a lot to learn. I’m not sure if he has a strong enough arm or his anticipation isn’t their yet. The interceptions he threw I hope are just rookie mistakes and not lack of ability.

I don’t see the value of Joey Harrington on this team. I think Ryan is the future, and Redman or Shockley are the present, no matter how short term this may be.

Norwood looked lightning quick as usual. Turner ran well. Douglass seemed to catch everything thrown his way. On Defense Blue made some standout plays. I look forward to seeing the Jacksonville preseason game.

Stephen, nice post man. I was the same way about Vick although like most of the fools on this blog I am a season ticket holder since the dome opened. I did not get season tickets because of Vick. I got them because I am a falcon fan. That is the problem with ( i will use a phrase we read earlier) THEM people is they only care for Vick and his color. The hell with them/I will be there next sat. nite.

Stephen, i totally agree w/your post. I’ve never blamed the Falcons for giving up on Vick, so i don’t know where you got that from. Arthur Blank did what he thought was best for his franchise. As you know I support Vick, but i don’t condone what he did. the reason i hate the Falcons is because if the way vick was treated by the fans. “He has braids, he listens to rap music, he doesn’t pass for 300 yards enough, blah blah blah”. This man was blamed for everything, and he made us relevant. When he flipped off the fans, they deserved it. i wonder how those fans would react if you’re out busting your a* to win and they boo you because they don’t like the way you look, braids, etc etc etc. The man wasn’t allowed to have a bad game, but I bet Ryan will be able to have alot of them for years to come and people will make excuses for him. thats just my opinion.

Hey Vick Supporter:

I came to see the Falcons before VICK was there, which I’m sure most didn’t. The reason the dome sold out is because he was the most explosive athlete in the NFL, or any sport, not for his passing ability. But if you want to talk about his winning record, let’s look at the trend. He went from 9-6-1, to 11-5 (best record), to 8-8, to 7-9, in a season which we struggled to score at all once the option plays stopped working after like the 2nd game of the season. People came to watch Vick cause he was exciting. By the way, we havn’t made the playoffs since 2004, with the GREAT MIKE VICK!!! Get over it!!!

Vick supporter, I think it’s more like this: “He has braids, he listens to rap music, he doesn’t pass for 300 yards enough, he can’t lead the team to more than 7 wins, he’s inaccurate, he flipped the fans a bird, he smokes marijuana and smuggles it in the airport, he pled guilty to federal dog fighting charges, he was banned for life by the NFL, he is locked up in a federal prison after bilking the franchise out of millions and millions and millions of dollars, blah blah blah.

Michael Vick was always a blown out knee away from being a janitor. I watched Matt Ryan since his high school days in the Philadelphia area.

Sure, there is a maturation process to the professsional level but this kid will handle all aspects of the game - on and off the field - with a maturity beyond his years.

Anybody knows that even a mediocre QB from the SEC is more suited for the NFL than a great QB from the ACC.

That is why shockley should get the nod over Ryan at quarterback for the falcons. Shockley is definitely the face and the future of this falcons franchise. He has prioved so much in camp already that even coach smith has vbeen raving about his performance.

Do not be surprised to see Ryan on the trading blok after Shockley shows what he can do the UGA way! He is the next best thing after vick to bring the falcons back!

Jason, you just proved my point. You people expected Vick to win every game by himself, and many times he did. The record is gonna be worse when: 1. As we all agree (I Think) the fronts office was a bunch of idiots it all starts at the top. 2. O-line and recievers? Not even gonna get into that. Numerous other reasons, and YES, VICK HAD HIS FLAWS. i just hated that you people expected him to be perfect every game when its a team game. Blame the front office too, they’re the ones that put the team together, not Vick. When you build a team around a once in a lifetime athlete like Vick, you don’t just give him the football and tell him to win the super bowl. Even Tom Brady has to have peices around him, which Vick did not.

The problem I have with all of the back and forth on Vick, aside from the inevitable devolution into race-baiting from both sides, is that the man is not playing for this team. I understand that some people have strong feelings either way on Vick (or just like to post inciteful stuff on blogs to see what kind of s** they can stir up), but if the man is not on the team, why not focus on the team we have now?

I personally don’t care about who starts for the team this year. I want the team to win. That should be the goal for every man on the team. I’d like to think that should be the hope of every Falcon fan. I will support every man taking the field whether they’re black, white, or any other damn color as long as they’re giving their best effort to help the Falcons be a good team. That is all that matters to me.

I went to Mill Creek and the Dome this weekend and was very impressed by DJ Shockley. He didn’t throw any interceptions friday (Chris Redman with one)and didn’t throw any saturday against the first team defense (Redman & Ryan both with one against the third team defense). Let ‘em cut Redman and ease Ryan into the job. Give Matt time, He will be GREAT!!

Number 1, You are totslly wrong about white football fans in regard to a black quarterback. Of course, there are some who are idiots but true football fans don’t care. There are a lot of black people who are dead set against a white qb but I would say most true black football fans don’t care either. Who friggin cares as long as you win. We haven’t won with Vick, not that it was nearly all his fault. I truly believe he did the best he could but when you are making the most money and are the face of the franchise you have to expect people to be critical. He wrote his own ticket out of here. ” Peyton Manning pled guilty to dog fighting in federal court today, thus ending a sad story of a promising young talent hitting rock bottom. The former Superbowl QB apologized to his former fans and teammates in a televised speech. Halfway through the speech he broke into tears when a reporter asked how he felt that the NFL had banned him for life, including any chance at the Hall of Fame, which had been previously considered just a Rite of Passage for one of the greatest field generals to ever play the game. After serving his initial 3 years in prison, Manning is expected to enter the witness protection program for turning states evidence in order to avoid maximum sentencing. Because of his high profile status, the U. S. District of Attorneys office had declined any other plea bargain in order to make an example to other celebrities and athletes that such barbaric behavior would not be tolerated. Tonight on Nightline, we will have a town meeting of former fans who are eager to vent their frustations and disappointment about someone whom they once considered a hero. We’ll be back after these messages.”

Why are we still talking about Vick? He put the team on his back-okay. The last two full seasons he played we went 8-8 and missed the playoffs. Don’t know how wildly successful that was supposed to be, but here’s what people keep ignoring:

He Fcked up and got himself put in jail for nearly 2 years. How did *that help the team, eh?

In the meantime, the NFL moves along…

Shockley is short, but so was Doug Flutie. Who cares. Vick was 6’ himself (but he could run like a prison virgin, I know..I know). Kordell Stewart wasn’t any taller. We’ll see how Ryan does. I don’t think he’ll be out there right away anywhow. Not unless he shows himself to be GREAT right off the line. I don’t expect that. And anybody that is…well, Vick wasn’t either. Get over it.

Vick Supporter, I am sorry, I never meant to insinuate that you were putting down the Falcons, or blaming them. I wasn’t even thinking of you when I commented. I actually enjoy reading your posts. I just have read some blog comments that called the Falcons stupid for not having Vick and they will regret playing Ryan over Vick. I just don’t understand that logic since Vick is in jail. I know Blank wanted him for his whole career and would give anything to have the dog-fighting enterprise not have happened. For the most part, I am agreeing with you Vick Supporter, and I do not think you are a racist. I don’t like the assumption that if you like Vick you are black and if you don’t like Vick you are white. As has been sad, stereotypes don’t help anything.

In any case, Go Falcons! I hope the new coach/GM can build a winner. If not, at least there is UGA (by the way, I am a die-hard UGA fan, but I only want Shockley to play if he is the best. I am not a blind homer on that).

He said I’m from another planet!’ My apologies to everyone else for that display of childishness. I’ll leave the stupidity to ‘himwhofeelhated, themoron’.

If dj is cut by the falcons, I know all the season ticket holders on my job will never watch a falcon game agaian, Definately won buy any season tickets. Vick was stupied and ignorant. Dont throw his problems on Dj. I know the (we) the bulldog nation will be there for him.

Whitemencanjump, apology accepted. Now we can get down to serious discussion. Who do you want to be Falcon’s QB, since Vick is out of the pic. I personally would like Shockley to get a chance as he is a person of great integrity and character as he showed in college. I am a UGA fan, but I don’t see Ryan as ready, Harrington has had his chance (sick), and Redman will probably be no more than a career backup.

wow… the racial venom on this blog is exposing everybody’s white / black wounds. You know the falcons could really benefit from a unified fan base that put their hatred into the opposing team instead of its players, the fans, and the ownership. I can guarantee you folks that Blank wants to put the most exciting and least controversial product on the field. That’s what we all want. Whe’re all atlantans and we’re all just trying to have good time on sundays. Lets grow up, act like men, drink some beers, throw our insults at the visiting team instead of holding ill thoughts about each other. Much Love ATL

Ok Guys - you got me. I have been trying to use racism as a shield to deflect away from the criticism of Vick even though he couldn’t get the job done as falcons qb. He was an overrated, greedy, drug using, bird flipping, inarticulate convict whoc couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn.

Now, Vick is in prison and all I can do is yap about racism.

  • Black hole = racism.

  • Billiards = racism.

  • Vick conviction = racism.

  • Shockly is not a great qb = racism.

  • Matt Ryan is the face of the falcons franchise = racism.

    RACISM RACISM RACISM.

  • If you don’t like convicted felon Mike Vick, you are a racist.

  • If you don’t like 7-9 Mike Vick, you are a racist.

  • If you don’t like Federal Prison Inmate #324568917 (a.k.a Mike Vick), you are a racist.

You honkies are all racist. It has nothing to do with football. Everyone knows that if you are white, you can’t be a good football player.

  • If you like Tom Brady = racist.

  • If you like Peyton Manning = racist.

Bottom line, I don’t like white people.

Oh my! My apologies to “Theyhateme.” After going back to read your comments, I believe I have just been childish to a child. I’m so sorry. With the venom that Falcons fans display on these pages, especially Vick supporters and detractors, it’s easy to forget that young minds are participating as well. Please ignore my earlier comments, and I will try to no longer be the “monster from mars” that I just revealed myself to be. God bless you.

Yes, the great Shocker will return to Jax this weekend, site of some memorable moments for him. Remember, the INT that Guss Scott took to the house & put Shockley on the bench as UGA wet the bed against the Gators? Lets hope he gets off the bench & shows what he has or hasnt. Good college QB, washout in NFL like D Greene.

vick supporter, if you hste the falcons and us falcons fans then why are you posting here? why are you reading about the falcons? why do you care what we think?

vick had a great run for the first 3/4 of his career, the last part was far below average. granted, he did not have the greatest pieces around him, but no matter the city or the franchise the QB will always take the brunt. i was a huge vick supporter but i am a bigger falcons fan, was before he got here and still am after he has left. he made arthur blank look foolish, he hurt the falcons for years to come by tying up millions of dollars and he ruthlesly killed dogs for pleasure. there is no logical defense for him, you are free to like whatever player you want but as a falcons fan i’m glad i wont have to be around vick fans at the dome any longer. he is gone and will never play for the falcons again! he does deserve a second chance somewhere, just not here!

If ya’ll think these people have problems with a black man being an NFL quarterback, just wait until Obama is elected President. If he doesn’t walk on water, feed the multitude, raise the dead, end the war in Iraq, and balance the budget in two weeks of his inauguration, he will be labeled a fraud and failure by every good ole boy in this country. Only in Amerikkka.

Unless Obama pleads guilty to Federal Charges, Flips the Nation and Bird, is totally ineffective, and is banned for life from public office, he should be o.k.

It’s not always about race my friend.

Nice try though.

It’s amazing in 2008 how many people STILL BRING RACE INTO EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!Vick blew it. Just get over it. I think the QB who has the highest rating or has generated the most scoring drives during the four preseason games should be the starter no matter who that QB is.

As a white man, I’ve never taken personal pride in the abilities, intelligence or attributes of another white person because they were white.

What a horrible shortcoming it is, then, that people - of whatever color - have to hang so much “pride” on the abilities of another person, solely because they share a similar skin tone.

What does that say for the person who hasn’t enough personal pride that they need to take what’s said about a freakin’ imprisoned former professional athlete so personal?

Sad.

Please, “quit” on the Falcons. Yes, you told us. You deftly predicted the demise of the 2007 team. Big shock to us all. Who knew that a 7-9 team would do worse without its returning starter at QB? I know I was fooled. (note: sarcasm)

So move on; there are other teams with quarterbacks whose skin tone (if only that) you have in common with them. If that’s what you need to support a team, again, it’s a sad reason, but a reason nonthtless, and a need that can be fulfilled by other NFL teams.

If anyone has seen DJ Shockley, you would know that he can run better by far than anything I have seen from the other QB’s when they were in college. DJ is not just a QB, but also an athlete of perfection. Why can’t someone write an article on him? His new coach, unbiased, likes what he sees. How can you writers use him for bait in your articles, but don’t even mention him and his great attributes as a replacement for Vick, but without the negative baggage? DJ is morally top-notch, is one of the smartest QB’s to step on the field, works incredibly hard and as a QB is the equal in elusiveness and speed of Vick and Redman-so what’s not to like? Would you write about his downside so we will quit deluding ourselves about a man that we have watched closely at UGA and he never failed us or himself. Oh! did I mention that forgotten and underappreciated quality of Loyalty? Take a look at his outside interests at the children’ camp for cancer victims. How can anyone glorify Tebow’s interests(and I genuinely like the young man) and not compare with BJ Shockley’s community interests? How can the Atlanta Falcons ignore the positive attributes of this man as a great QB and citizen that is the antidote to the antipathy created by Vick? He has shown much leadership ability and patience in the face of ignorance(concerning his abilities on the playing field). He is much more man than most of us will ever be. I’ll bet money that he is also the man his teammates would like in the huddle. Give the man a chance to be the champion that we believe he is capable of becoming.

Oledawg - you had me going there for a minute! Very good fiction piece you just wrote. I like D.J., but I remember him at UGA, what a crazy mofo he was - slinging the ball all over the place. He was lucky to even get drafted.

Anything is possible, I guess.

I like DJ and was impressed with him the other day. I would love to see him beat Redman out and get to start. However if that happens and he has a good year, it will be his last as a Falcon. He will be a restricted free agent after this year. With the big contract that Ryan received he definitely is not going anywhere. Kind of like in San Diego, where Brees had a great last year there, but was still had to go because of how much they had invested in Rivers. A solid performance frm DJ can definitely give hium some trade value. Harrington however is done.

Mike - don’t you think you and the rest of your dawg fans are getting a little carried away?

Shockley was drafted in the 7th round 3 years ago and has not come close to seeing any action in the NFL. He is fighting for a roster spot on one of the worst teams in the NFL and you are already comparing him to Drew Brees?

Step away from the pipe…

The reality is that even if Shockley is lucky enough to make the team (most likely as a marketing tool to appease you and the rest of the bulldog homers), it will be as a 3rd string quarterback as he is destined to bounce around as undersized and fragile career back-up.

Like someone said above, though, anything is possible.

Mike V would still be playing and heading for the Hall Of Fame if the Falcons had of kept Coach DAN REEVES. He was becoming a feared weapon as a QUARTERBACK, instead of running a high school Wing-T bullsheet offence. Once Jim Mora/ Greg Knapp took over, they churned the offence into running between the 20 yardlines. Every team knew we could not score from inside the Red-Zone. Especially after Finn went down. The real Mike was gone long before the Dog fights. Everybody just turn that page and let’s go with the new era.

You GA Homers Kill Me! I kind of think the new GM and Coach Smith would know a thing or two about who should be the starting QB. I have been to camp and seen Matt Ryan up close. He is the real deal! Shockley may not even make this team and he surely will never be the starter. Get over it GA Homers. Please!!!! He was a 7th round pick for a reason! Just because he went to GA does not mean he is going to be on the team. I trust in the new leadership! As a season ticket holder I say GO FALCONS!!!

PS all these GA Homers that write on this blog are probably the people who have those GA Bulldog License plaes and never even went to college…..HOMERS….

No chance Irons is our nickel back? I love the kid, he’s got enough heart to play special teams in this league for a long time, but I’d love to see him play a little more D this year.
