Wheel turning a few hours before the draft

New York — Well, the wheels are turning big time, with reports from ESPN that the St. Louis Rams are going to select Virginia defensive end Chris long with the No. 2 pick.

Rams personnel chief Billy Devaney said on the network that he is still entertaining trade offers - but none of those have come from Atlanta.

If St. Louis does take Chris Long - Miami took Michigan OT Jake Long at No. 1 - LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey and Boston College QB Matt Ryan will be there. GM Thomas Dimitroff said he has a tiebreaker already established in such a scenario but he didn’t tip his hand.

I’ve spoken to two people today who said they feel the Falcons will take Ryan regardless, but those people are not officially in the know. Only Dimitroff, coach Mike Smith and maybe owner Arthur Blank are said to know the choice. For the longest time it seemed that Dorsey was the top player on Atlanta’s board but over the past few days, the people I’ve spoken feel the Falcons are leaning more to Ryan.

The Falcons could entertain trade offers but with Dorsey and Ryan there, it is unlikely they would pass on either since both are projected as long-term difference makers.

It’s all guesswork not but at about 3:30, we’ll know what the Falcons will do. If there are any updates, I’ll be sure to post them ASAP.

Dimitroff & Smiths stated goals: build up the lines. Then they take Ryan over the top DT in the draft. Makes no sense whatsoever but thats nothing new for this organization. Very disappointing!

While I prefer Dorsey, I’ll be happy with either. It’s what he does with the rest of the picks that are really more important, and I think we’ll come out of this with a whole lot of help one way or the other. People are overlooking the larger picture here; this guy’s known for getting gems later in the draft. We’ve got two high third rounders too, ya know.

I think the Falcons will take Ryan regardless. He’s a cornerstone they can rebuild around. Character and talent both count, and from what I have read and heard, he has both. Redmon and Harrington will take the snaps (and the sacks) for the first year, I’d guess. And there is OL talent available in the second round that will help.

Depending on what they do with the rest of the draft, i wouldn’t be against taking Ryan. This is a deep draft for building the line. So if there sold on Ryan at 3, then go for it.

If they take Ryan, I’m for putting him in the mix at training camp. Don’t wait til 2009. If he’s the guy, work to transition him in this year. If this isn’t tha plan, take Dorsey and get Brohm or Flacco later.

I trust Dimitroff with the pick. Matt Ryan is by far the best quarterback in this draft. Although he wont be the most popular pick, he is the smartest one. He has the arm, football iq, and most importantly is a true leader. To win a Super Bowl you need a great quarterback. Why should Dimitroff pass one up, if he believes that Ryan is going to be great? It would be insane for the Falcons not to draft him and to trade up to draft an inferior quarterback later in the first round. Ryan will be a great leader of this franchise and while it may take time, Falcons fans will be thankful that he was the pick.

uh, they need a quarterback. This draft is so deep with defensive tackles they can take one of the lesser ones and still come out on top.. Then again it’s also deep on quality quarterbacks. So I guess they will choose their poison.

The best move may be to trade to #8 with Baltimore and pick up another 2nd round pick….Then with that 8th pick take the best OL or DL available then build the team with 4 second rounders!

If they stay at 3 I WOULD TAKE DORSEY..He can make an immediate impact and is much less of a gamble than RYAN!

Why draft a quarterback when you can’t protect him or furthermore a defense to stop the other team.more of the same from a franchise that just can’t get it right.Glenn Dorsey you idiots.I be laughing my #ss off when Dorsey is pounding Matt Ryan into the ground when they face him!!!!

By sb is correct

April 26, 2008 1:14 PM | Link to this

Ryan has a weak arm, never won any big time games, and threw 19 int in a weak ACC. QBs who have a lot of picks in college rarely escape this problem especially with a weak offensive line. Also, all the qbs this year are about the same, so why waste a 3rd pick on someone who is not a standout when Dorsey is available? It is not smart to try to move on from the vick era by spending 30 mil on a bust. I can just imagine two years from now…if the falcons go 5-11 w/ ryan, everyone will be begging to dump ryan and get vick…thus not ending the “era”

Please, please, please don’t waste an opportunity to finally turn this franchise around by wasting a valuable pick at 3 on the next David Carr. Carson Palmer is the #3 QB in this league, but he cant win why? Because of no line and no defense. Ryan could go on to be a great NFL player…but Offensive Lines MAKE average players great. Eli Manning and Tony Romo are maginal QBS at best, but they have all day to throw back there. Too much value at QB that could be acquired in the 2nd round to blow this one. I’m not saying Dorsey is the answer, but I know Ryan is not. We have far to many other needs. ATL is the most fairweather sports city in the nation, and you really think that its not going to cause more trouble than its worth to have a ‘star’ QB sitting behind causing constant controversy? No. don’t do it. We should have learned from the past decade of 1st round picks. Go with less risk. He has no chance to succeed currently. and if we don’t use this draft to build lines, he wont for another 5 years. If there is a positive to drafting Matt Ryan, it would be the guarantee of having a top 5 pick for many years to come.

**EAT IT, RYAN HATERS.

Ryan is the best QB to come out since Eli/Rivers/Big Ben. The Falcons will take a guy who’s going to be a top-5 QB in the NFL over a DT who is granted, awesome, but who will break down in 3 years or less.

Thomas Dimitroff knows what he’s doing after all. Go TD! Don’t listen to the cowards who fear taking Ryan. Real men take chances.**

OUR ATLANTA FALCONS

By Paul Hamilton

April 26, 2008 1:18 PM | Link to this

Same old falcons. Matt Ryan is going to get killed behind our offensive line if they pick him.

I would absolutely trade down and try to accumulate more picks for next year and take an offensive lineman with my first pick. Taking Ryan at #3 seems way to risky when you have so many holes on this team. I agree that all of our picks will be important, but at #3 the falcons need to play it safe for a change.

I would avoid taking Ryan because everyone knows that’s who Blank wants to pick.

So many top quarterbacks in the draft have turned out to be busts (i.e. joey harrington, akili smith, ryan leaf, michael vick, jeff george) We need to establish a front line that any qb can play behind then go after a big name qb next year. lets try and develop the ones we already have on staff! Who says this draft is deep at DT? I think it’s deeper @ QB - with more interesting QB prospects on Sunday than ever before - ever heard of Dennis Dixon, Eric Ainge, or Kevin O’Connell? If you pick a QB late and he doesn’t work out, no big deal. If you pick one early and he doesn’t work out - you can expect 7 years to recover from it.

That being said, pick Dorsey. Build up the Offensive line so that when you get a QB, he isn’t lying on his back every other play.

OUR ATLANTA FALCONS are in a good situation…..choosing between Matt Ryan & Glenn Dorsey!!!! C’mon people, I prefer Dorsey as well but either way we can’t loose!!! Both positions are of great need….The 2 teams that made it to the SuperBowl last year(Patriots & Giants) had 2 common factors; Great defense and a FRANCHISE QUARTERBACK!!! That’s what we’re choosing between…….Although I would to grab Dorsey, I don’t mind picking Ryan b/c the DT position is richer than QB this year. We would have to trade back in the 1st to get a quality QB. After Ryan there is Brohm, Flacco, Henne, Woodson, Brennan etc. There still quality @ DT well into the 3rd & we have 3 picks there. Either way we’ll be fine

GO FALCONS!!!!! WE BELIEVE IN NOW!!!!

If the Falcons take Ryan over Dorsey, Smith and Dimitroff better go ahead and start packing their bags. Ryan is the next David Carr/Joey Harrington. You take Dorsey and dont look back. The Falcons have to keep their pick. They have to pick Dorsey or Ryan at that pick. If Dimitroff believes Matt Ryan will be a top QB in this league, he has to take him. You cannot pass on a top QB just because your O-line isn’t good enough yet. You have ten other picks to address both the offensive AND defensive lines. It will take time no matter who the Falcons pick in the first round, folks. We’ve sat through enough crappy football over the years to give Dimitroff and Mike Smith a chance. I suggest that we shut up and do that.

Glenn Dorsey makes Abraham, Jamal Anderson, Babineaux, and other on the D-Line better players. They want Solid defense, offense predicated on the run and you take an above average QB in Matt Ryan. Get Henne or Brohm and you reduce the bust factor and the money you pay them isn’t great. Glenn Dorsey or Sedrick Ellis should be our pick

Come on people… Chill!! AJC is never right and clearly states they don’t know. NO way they pass Dorsey. Smith was a D line coach at Baltimore and D Coordinator at Jax. They all know Dorsey was unblockable when healthy and even played hurt. Ryan is not much better (if at all) than 2-3 other QBs. One will be there in 2R or they can trade back into late half of 1R. But I am not so sure they will even draft a QB when they have serious holes @ D-Line, O-Line, CB and TE.

Besides if they do want Ryan (Highly unlikely unless they see something we don’t) they can trade down and pick up more picks and still get him.

By Proud dawg

All you people wanting Ryan: do you understand that he will not play next year? Yet, even if he does, he will get battered if we have no line!!!! Injuries will then plague him for the rest of his career and he will wind up being a bust despite his talent! Who the hell knew who Tony Romo was before he played behind a solid o-line? Joey Harrington or Chris Redmon even DJ Shockley could maybe have the same success. And quit calling me a fairweather fan, I’ll pay for a product when it works and is worth the damn price!

Glen Dorsey’s a stud, there’s no doubt about that. And I’d be happy to have him on the roster. But you folks are missing the big picture. You have to have a good QB to win in this league. What’s the big knock on Ryan - that he threw too many interceptions last year. Well, we should all remember a QB from the 1983 draft who dropped like a stone in the first round because of too many interceptions, and he turned out to have a pretty good career down in South Florida. Ryan started at least three years for a team that was pretty successful given its mediocre talent. Have we seen any playmakers come out of BC lately? Put Peyton or Eli or Phillip Rivers or Matt Leinart or any of the other supposed great college quarterbacks of late with that bunch and I daresay they’d be hard pressed to do as well. Ryan’s a gamer, he’s shown that time and again, and I’d take him over Eli, Rivers, Cutler or Leinart any day. Let’s solidify this position now and then work to get the other pieces around Ryan so we can win.

By the way, NFL Network is now reporting that Baltimore is trying to trade up to No. 2 to take Ryan. That should tell us something. Ozzie Newsome has always been a pretty good judge of talent.

One final point. Everyone seems to believe that because Dimitroff came from NE he will be able to find the next Tom Brady in the later rounds. That ain’t likely to happen.

By Juno1977

April 26, 2008 2:00 PM | Link to this

Ryan is not a franchise QB he is just the top RATED QB in this draft. He will not win in ATL because there are nothing around him to help him win. Build the defense and let that be the face of the Falcons. Like the Jaguars, Ravens, Steelers. ATL is going to be a run first team you don’t need to pick a QB with the third pick.

By Ken Strickland

April 26, 2008 2:02 PM | Link to this

Smith is a DEF minded coach, and coached a Jaguar DEF that was led by strong DT’s. Dimitroff helped build the Patriots by drafting top DLinemen 1st. I’m sure he hasn’t forgotten it was TBrady, his 6th rd QB pick, and not DBledsoe, his 1st rd pick, that won all those SB’s.

We must also remember. Even if we draft Ryan with our #3 pick, it doesn’t mean we intend to keep him. We could draft Ryan, and a club we might have a prearrangement with can draft maybe Dorsey or Ellis, and we swap picks. That way, we might get lucky and Dorsey might drop to the team we have the prearrangement with. We then end up getting him plus another pick.

I’ll be willing to bet that the Birds go with Matt Ryan. This is just like Billy Knight taking Shelden Williams for the Hawks a couple of years ago. In a year or two he’ll show just enough to get folks excited but won’t take the Birds far at all.

Nearly every year, some team reaches for a QB who doesn’t deserve to be taken that high.

In 2002 there were 3 first-round QBs, none of whom deserved to go that high.

In 2003 the Jags (my new favorite team if the Falcons pick Ryan) reached for Byron Leftwich.

In 2005 the 49ers reached for Alex Smith #1 overall.

Let’s not be that team this year. Take a lineman.

Dorsey is my pick but if they pick Ryan, look for the Falcons to do some wheeling & dealing. Perhaps we pick Ryan then give him to Baltimore who will pick Ryan Clady or Sedrick Ellis for us, and we’ll get #38 in the second round. Then we can package two of our Round 2 picks and move up in the bottom of the first round to pick up Flacco.

“If Ryan is so great why wasn’t he talked about last season. Why was Brian the number 1 QB coming in to the season. “

EXACTLY!! Ryan wasn’t talked about because Brohm is better! While Brohm had to adjust to an entirely new offensive scheme this year (not easy for ANY QB) Ryan got to play in the same scheme, stand behind an excellent O-line (well they were excellent against GT anyway), never get hit, and look over the field all day to see who to throw to. And he still threw like 20 picks in a weak conference. If Brohm’s gonna be available in the late 1st-early 2nd, it would be straight up retarded to pick Ryan at 3. Bill Parcells is a damn good talent evaluator, and if he’d rather roll with his 27-year-old unproven 2nd round QB than pick Matt Ryan, that tells you what you need to know.

On cue, Kirk Herbstreit calls Brian Brohm the possible “steal” of this draft. I couldn’t agree more. Brohm >>>> Ryan.

I’ll throw-up if they take Ryan.

Dorsey is THE guy!

Just Say NO to Matt Ryan at 3!

Draft lineman…stay true to building from the inside out Thomas Dimitroff and coach Mike Smith!

Taking Ryan to appease all of those who want a “Franchise QB” is a mistake that will haunt the falcons for years to come.

Tell me Ryan is just a smokescreen. As a season ticket holder, this will not solidify my committment to the team…building the lines will.

Draft Dorsey or trade down and build the team.

First, Mike Vick should be set free. Let’s get real people. We’re talking about dogs here. Second, the Falcons filled the Dome with Mike Vick and have a 7-24 record since 2002 without him.

Next, if the Falcons draft the terribly inept and slow, inaccurate, Matt Ryan, I will contemplate choosing a new team and I’ve been a fan since 1978.

Colt Brennan is the best QB coming out of this draft but the Falcons should take DEFENSE. Glenn Dorsey or Sedrick Ellis, please!!!

Anybody wanna make some predictions?

As far as offensive players vs. defensive players: if you score you will sometimes win, if they don’t score you will never lose!!!!!! PICK DORSEY!

First off I’d like to say, that the NFL & NBA drafts are the BIGGEST waste of TV time, it drags on for days, along with presidential debates. I question the sanity of any person who sits watchs these utterly drain on the brain shows. waste.

Proof that Atlanta drafting a QB in the first round is a good thing: Steve Bartkowski.

Proof that it isn’t: Randy Johnson, Chris Miller, Michael Vick.

Proof that paying for other’s first round QBs doesn’t make you a winner either: Jeff George, Byron Leftwich, Joey Harrington.

Get a grip. Draft Dorsey.

Football hasn’t been that interesting since they started paying players more than $200 a month. Things were just better before Joey Namath and color tv. I don’t know what was wrong with black & white tv, it was fine for Bart Starr & Vincent Lombardi. Monday Night football…harrumph!

Why I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Falcons draft Darren McFadden, and have the Jets select Gholston and then they make a trade where the Falcons wind up with additional compensation (draft pick, money, or whatever).

OK now TD & MS get him some help at the line.

Another year down the drain. So much for building excitement in Atlanta. Well, we do not have to worry about watching them on TV during the home games.

I will post on every blog on this website to vent my anger, disgust & disappointment in the picking of Matt Ryan. It is completely moronic and smells to high heaven of one desperate owner!! He is deluded to think this pick with put any butts in the seats this year. Winning puts fans in the seats, Arthur!! You think Ryan will make any difference this year to that?? I don’t. See Carson Palmer. Awesome QB, terrible rest of the team and they go nowhere. Somewhere Bobby Petrino is laughing himself silly at this debacle!! Just sell the daggone team Arthur to someone who truly will let smart football people run it. Because this organization is still being run by loons. If Dorsey has some injury that scared the Falcons, take another defensive lineman or QB or trade Ryan to Baltimore, we need too many other position help besides QB!!! I just can’t understand it, why why why ?????? He can’t be that great & even if he is, it won’t matter. Look how ordinary Tom Brady looked with no protection. And we have no line at all!!!! I am completely depressed.

PS- Arthur you REALLY need to stop buddy! This is footbsall, not a corporate board meeting, why draft a multi-million dollar figurehead when you have NO FOUNDATION for him to stand on ?? WHY us Lord, why??

Now I know why 98,000 people head to athens on saturday and don’t come back until monday. You trade up to take a OT that you could have got in early second round. Amazing how things change but somehow they seem to stay the same. I just throw my hands up at this Organization.

I am glad to see Matt Ryan coming aboard. I was a MV fan from the beginning but he just makes me sick now. The AF needs to build the organization around Matt. When MV gets out of prison- let the Dolphins have him. They will take any thug. Go AF. Good choice- and send Joey Harrington and Leftowich to the curb to free up the salary cap.

OH! My god, what is wrong with this franchise. From now on instead of paying to see the Falcons play, Mr. Black should pay the fans to come to the stadium. Flacon faithful, a long season is ahead of us.

You AF commentators make me sick. I really hope that you are displaced northerners that do not follow UGA football. Give it a break- the AF will come back- it is a business and the current staff is doing a great job. From your comments, I doubt that most of you would know how to run a business. It appears that most of you are being sponsored by budweiser.

This shows me the new GM is a yes man. I was hoping Blank brought in football people and let them handle the team.

What terrible decisions they made today. Blank has such an ego he can’t let go. The Falcons will always be limited by his ego.

I applaud the efforts of our new general manager. You won’t be considered a genius until you start winning games and people can see the actual results. You have to understand that as a true fan of football that Atlanta is not a city that is very dedicated to encouraging their sports organizations (Excluding the Braves). It is a known fact that our fans are as fickle as a stray dog or even as loyal. We needed a quarterback and we got the best in the draft class. They made moves also to address the offensive line need. Now the rest remains to be seen. I have trust that the process will work out and silence the “nay sayers”.

I liked the Matt Ryan pick only until they traded up to 21. If you were going to trade up to 21, then you should have taken dorsey at 3, and at 21 you may have actually been able to select ryan, if not you would have been able to take henne or brohm if you wanted to select a qb. How many of you out there would rather have had dorsey and henne/brohm rather than the ryan and sam baker combo?? I definitely would take the former.

First of all; the quaterback is the most overrated draft pick. Unless you’re a Michael Vick type of talent I would not even consider drafting a quaterback in the top 10. Matt Ryan is overated and overhyped; can’t throw under pressure; he will never even come close to the excitement and skill MV7 bought to the Falcons. Falcons should have taken McFadden and then scooped up Deshaun Jackson a blazing receiver. Falcons have no talent at the skill positions; including quaterback!!
