Dimitroff: Draft will be need based

Flowery Branch - The Falcons’ philosophy approaching this weekend’s NFL draft will be “calculated, needs-based,” general manager Thomas Dimitroff said Monday at a news conference that included head coach Mike Smith. Though it might sound somewhat blasé, I found it refreshing not to hear the old, “best player available,” cliché.

Dimitroff, who holds the No. 3 overall pick and four of the top 48 selections, declined to prioritize those calculated needs but he did say that every position could use “re-calibration.” The only position that doesn’t need some form of help is place-kicker, where Jason Elam was signed as a free agent, Dimitroff said. You can add both running back spots and defensive end to that mix, although late-round picks could be used there to acquire players for depth at those positions.

Dimitroff and Smith didn’t divulge specific plans and were quite adept at evasive measures to some creatively posed questions by print and broadcast media. However, LSU DT Glenn Dorsey, Michigan OT Jake Long and Boston College QB Matt Ryan do appear to be the top guys on their draft board.

I’ve been projecting Dorsey in mock drafts. If he’s gone and Long is available, I think Atlanta will take Long. If both are gone, then it likely will be Ryan unless a team like Kansas City (#5) or Baltimore (#8) wants to move to the No. 3 spot to get to Ryan. My guess is Atlanta would welcome a trade back to those spots if Dorsey and Long are gone.

The next level of enticing prospects could include USC DT Sedrick Ellis, Troy CB Leodis McKelvin, Boise State OT Ryan Clady and Virginia OG/OT Branden Albert. Albert is rising up draft boards because even though he played guard for the most part, he projects as a tackle - and a very good one.

Keep in mind I’m guessing here. Dimitroff and Smith haven’t given me any detailed inside info about the No. 3 pick and neither has anyone else. I’ve just put a bunch of things together from conversations that I’ve had with people from a few teams and player agents. I could be way off, but I think I’m, at the least fairly warm.

Drafting a quarterback and beefing up the offensive line will occur at some point in the draft. So will adding to the secondary, where it might not be out of the question for a cornerback to be taken with one of the three second-round picks - if not Atlanta’s second pick overall (No. 34). The Falcons need to find a starting cornerback since DeAngelo Hall has been shipped to Oakland. Dimitroff also revealed that scouting defensive backs - particularly safeties - has been a specialty, so expect at least one safety to be selected.

Dimitroff said that he has received some trade propositions but he was not specific about the No. 3 overall pick —- an expensive selection that teams tend not to trade up to unless there is a specific player they MUST have. The three second-round and two third-round picks Atlanta holds could prove more valuable when it comes to trades and Dimitroff did not deny receiving calls about those selections.

I’m going to blog a lot this week and over the weekend. I’ll be in New York Thursday to interview some of the prospects that’ll be at the draft Saturday at Radio City Music Hall. I’ll also be filing on-line bursts and blogs from the draft Saturday and Sunday. Sunday, I’ll be blogging and writing from ESPN in Bristol, Ct. I’ll be part of the network’s Day 2 draft coverage with a panel of other NFL media types, so I should have some good behind-the-scenes stuff for you guys too.

I want a giant lineman at No. 3 and there’s no way one worth the pick won’t be there. But, if they pick Ryan, so be it. I’ll put my trust in this new bunch. They seem to have a plan and good football sense.

Everyone is saying, trust Dimitroff but if he picks Matt Ryan, I’ll eat my Brian Finneran Falcons jersey!!! Kidding but seriously, some people don’t even think Ryan is the best QB available & I still say, Jake Long, if not then Glenn Dorsey if not then that Vernon Ghoulston (Sp?) guy…Keith ain’t getting any younger!! Then, take Erik Ainge in the later rounds for the future QB. Redmon will go down behind that sieve of a line & then my boy Joey will step right in. Joey: takes a lickin’ but keeps on tickin’!!!

The Falcons are praying J Long is around if not , my bet is they are gonna shop it. Clady’s good but not 3rd pick money good. The Falcns seem reluctant on Dorsey b/c He is hyped and again 3rd Rd money. I hope Baltimore or KC gives up their 1st and possibly 3rd rd pick for Atlanta’s 3rd overall. The Falcons have to rebuild the OL I don’t care who the QB is cause He’s gonna get killed if they don’t.

Steve,

Thanks for your updates recently. Question: Do you now how much of a gap there is between Ryan and the other QB’s that the Falcons are considering? And in your opinion, is there any other QB that the Falcons might have to trade up from their second round pick to acquire?

Thanks in advance…

Needs to be Jake Long in my opinion and if he is gone then Glenn Dorsey. Just like any level of football if you can not stop the run or run effectively you will not win. Why take Ryan? OL and DL need to be the priority.

TheFalcons, if they’re avaiable, should definitely choose either Jake Long or Glen Dorsey with the third pick, unless they get a worthwhile trade offer. Switching up with the Jets, for example, and getting a second rounder would be a great move if the Jets must have McFadden. The Falcons would then have FOUR second round picks, which they could either trade up with or fill needs with quality players. However, they should NOT select Ryan with the third pick and here’s why: the washout rate of first round quarterbacks is about %50, whereas lineman are much easier to project in terms of what they’ll do in the pors. In other words, you know a lot more of what you’re getting with Long or Dorsey. Here’s a list of great/very good quarterbacks not selected in the first round: Tom Brady (6th), Boomer Esiason (2nd), Brett Favre (2nd), Dan Fouts (3rd), Jeff Garcia (undrafted), Matt Hasselbeck (6th), Ron Jaworski (2nd), Joe Montana (3rd), Fran Tarkenton (2nd), Johnny Unitas (9th), and Kurt Warner (undrafted). Note: Joey Harrington and Byron Leftwich were #1 picks, and Chris Redman was drafted in the third round, three rounds ahead of Brady in the 2000 draft. Atlanta has as almost much chance of taking a good quarterback later in the draft as taking one at #3.

Not Ryan. Assumming Jake Long is gone, I’d like to see them trade down and pick up an extra pick or two. Get into the late first and snag Brohm, Flacco, or Henne (in that order).

If Dorsey and Jake Long go 1 and 2, look for Dimitroff to trade down a couple of spots, pick up an extra 2nd, and pick Sedrick Ellis out of USC. The Falcons want Long, Dorsey, or Ellis. Brandon Albert out of UVA is fourth on their list. QB will be an option in the second or third. Nobody’s talking about Andre Woodson. He might be the one. A wildcard QB could be Josh Johnson. Mularkey does like mobile QB’s. Don’t rule out Dixon. He would be the cheapest due to his injury. Also, Dimitroff wants Curtis Lofton at MLB. He will get him in the second. Also look for a draft day trade for Lito Sheppard.

It is clear that the Falcons first 2 choices are J. Long and Dorsey, however it also appears that they are going 1-2. If they do, the Falcons would probably like to trade down. If they can’t, they will be basically forced to take Matt Ryan. Let’s hope for a trade-down if those guys do go 1-2.

Really, Steve? That’s what you got out of what they said? I’ve only read the print version, but it looked to me like they blew the “Best Guy Available” door wide open! Which to me means that DE and RB ARE on the table, and Gholston and Chris Long just got pulled back into the conversation. Especially when you also consider his comments that “DE’s can in some cases play D. Tackle”, and character is the number one priority. For the latter reason, McFadden is still NOT in the conversation.

I agree that the secondary will be addressed early. But here’s hoping Linemen are the stars of the show Saturday. Go Falcons!!!

If Jake Long and Glenn Dorsey are off the board, then the Falcons should trade down, get one more 2nd round pick, and grab the other Ryan, Ryan Clady a few picks later. Then you get a guy that is supposed to be a great left tackle, vs. Jake would might be a great LT, but is probably going to be a better RT.

Please spent the picks on big heavy guys!!! Do not trade two picks to get back into the first for a QB - let the draft come to you!

Anyway, no QB is going to help this team from his back. Shore up the lines first. Pick Dennis Dixon in the 6th round and he’ll be healthy and knowledgable next year.

I don’t think OL is as much of a priority as you might think. That doesn’t mean we won’t take JLong if Dorsey isn’t available. Our OL coach under Mora was a nontraditionalist, and his approach, along with Knapp’s ultra conservative play calling, made pass blocking almost impossible. Last yrs OL coach was an OL coach in name only and had no prior experience, especially on the NFL level. Our new OL coach is one of the most experienced and effective ones in the NFL. He proved that last yr by keeping the Rams OL functional despite losing most of his linemen to injury.

With that, I think DL will be our #1 priority while OL and QB will be a 2nd rd consideration. I also believe we’ll draft a CB before taking an OL. I believe our first 4 picks will be DT, QB, CB, OL.

People forget that the Falcons are in pretty good shape at the OFF skill positions, except TE. WR-RWhite, LRobinson, MJenkins and maybe BFinneran RB-MTurner, JNorwood. Since we’ll primarily feature a power rushing OFF, a top rated passing QB won’t be a necessity.

Most of the top picks in this yrs draft will be used to stregthen the DEF. So we can expect a DT, CB, SS, ILB and OLB to be taken. On OFF, we can expect a QB, OT, TE, KR/PR and WR to be taken.

Hopefully Dorsey at #3 and trade up with the Packers for the #30 spot for Brian Brohm. Otherwise the Dolphins will take him at #32, and I think he is the guy. Then with our remaining picks we get an OT and a CB and more DTs. Also maybe Dimitroff can find a Safety that can eventually replace Lawyer. We’ll see how Erik Coleman works out, and hopefully Jimmy Williams will show up and play football. We also need a tight end since we released Crump, Tony Taylor needs more playing time, Boley and Brooking on the outside with Stephen Nicholas subbing in. Marcus Howard would be a great later selection and that man can get after the passer from the edge, ala Robert Mathis from Indianapoolis.

The Falcons better send every doctor they have on the payroll to make sure Glenn Dorseys back is ok before they blow the pick and the future on him. If Jake Long or Dorsey is gone, trade down with like the Lions or someone in need of a RB because McFadden will be sitting there and someone is going to want him before the Raiders get him. Having watched us last year, im thinking we can’t have enough draft picks to fill the holes we have. Just start filling those holes, pick by pick, dont fall into the Mel Kiper “Best Available” trap. Im excited for our draft, but leave Matt Ryan alone, I think he threw more INT’s then Harrington last year. Yikes, thats a scary thought.

Puh-lease, no “Made another interception” Ryan.

Everything TD said sounds like he’s pumping up the value of these players to get someone who isn’t drafting for need to trade with us. If that’s his strategy of dis-information, I like it.

Otherwise, give me O or D line in the 1st round and early second. Otah and McKelvin sound great. They visited Atlanta so surely they are more than on the radar.

QB? Yes, we should try to get one. If Brohm slips a little, pull a Brady Quinn to grab him. Otherwise, pick up Eric Ainge when convenient.

By Lil E

Ken, I think OL is our biggest priority. Wayne Gandy (if he’s still on the team) is 36. Todd Weiner and Kynan Forney are often hurt. We gave up over 40 sacks last year. If Jake Long is available at the No. 3 pick, there’s no way you pass on him. A guy who has only given up 2 sacks and 1 false start in his collegiate career is someone you want on your pathetic offensive line. However, I do agree that we do need an interior pass rusher AND a nose tackle. I’m a bit weary of Dorsey. He seems like another Kris Jenkins to me. I also think we might get a good cornerback later in the draft, too.

I have to admit that I am very excited to see what Dimitroff will do with all these draft picks.

Ryan has been build up to be all this and a big of chip and he is no better the rest. they ( the media like him) have you notice how he media has the black QB rank . Woodson played in the SEC and lead the sec in passing look where they have him the sport media is very bias when it come to QB”s . This guy is a pure bust. The media is picking there golden boy’s. The money from first to third is a lot of money that why all the hype. A group of good ol boy are pushing this . I wish the sport media was not bias but they clearly are. Read the press there is something wrong with most of the top black draft picks the media says read the press . Fair mean to be even hand in your judgement your thinking.

The fact do not bear out Ryan to be a top pick he is just liked by the press!! If the tuna does not pick him in the frist pick you are a fool to pick this guy! second third round yes!

Great Information Viking65. There really is only about a 50/50 chance that a 1st round QB turns out to be good. The only draft I can think of where they were good is the Manning, Rivers, and Roethlisberger draft.

Not to mention some boards have Flacco and/or Brohm higher than Ryan

I agree take Dorsey or J Long if available if not see if trading down in the top 10 is available and draft Ellis, Albert, or Mckelvin

Get an extra 2nd or 3rd pick and draft another player who will get PT

I think we should trade down with Baltimore and pick up another second rounder.Use the #8 pick to get Sedrick Ellis, i think he will be a better pro than Dorsey. The rest of the draft should play out like this…………

2nd round

-Carl Nicks/Anthony Collins: OT -Tracey Porter/Antoine Carson:CB -Jerrod Mayo/Chris Lofton: LB -Brohm/Flacco:QB

3rd Round

-OL/DL -SS

4th Round

-Jacob Tamme/Martin Rucker:TE

5th Round -DL/RB

6th round DB

7th WR

Sedrick Ellis-DT… Carl Nicks-OT…Jarrod Mayo-LB… Tracey Porter-CB…. Brian Brohm-Qb ….. Sounds like a good first day

Steve-

Of Long, Dorsey and Ryan, what are your thoughts as to how the Falcons rate them 1, 2, 3. In other words, what is your guess as to which of these players the Falcons favor over the other. Because there appears to be a possibility that two of the three might still be available when the Falcons pick at #3.

Thanks

April 22, 2008 11:52 AM | Link to this

The Falcons have MANY holes to fill, but the most pressing: OT, DT and QB. With some creativity and willing trade partners, Atlanta can fill ALL of those spots early in this draft. They have more picks than anybody else and that gives them the leverage to pull this off.

If Jake Long or Dorsey are there at #3, you take him, period. But I don’t believe either will be, so they then MUST get value for a #3 pick. There are only 4 other players in this draft who provide value at #3: Vernon Golstein, Chris Long, McFadden and Matt Ryan. There is NO WAY the Falcons can be redundant with this pick because of the guaranteed money involved, so the 2 DE’s and McFadden are out. That leaves Ryan, and I won’t be unhappy if he is the pick because I believe he will become a very good NFL QB, but I’m not convinced we want to spend #3 money on him - I believe the other QB’s are not far behind him.

My favorite plan of attack is to make a pre-draft deal with a team which wants to move up to get one of the 4 guy listed above. The most likely candidate will be Baltimore, who badly wants Ryan. Here’s how it would work: Atlanta selects Ryan at #3; if still on the board, Baltimore selects Sedrick Ellis (DT); they swap players, and the Ravens send a 2nd & 3rd round pick to the Falcons as compensation (that would be value under the NFL point system). With those 2 add’l picks plus probably the Falcons supplementary 2nd round pick (#48), you send those 3 picks to a team wanting out of the 1st round. A couple of teams with mid to high teens picks have expressed interest in doing that.

With this newly acquired 1st round selection, Atlanta needs to take an OT - probably Chris Williams or Jeff Otah (note: there are 6 impact OT in this draft).

Here’s the great part: the money spent on the #8 and the second 1st rounder would just about equal what they would have spent on Ryan at #3. Two for one is always a win, especially for a team with so many holes.

Finally, Atlanta uses their 34th pick to select a QB. Brohm is likely gone by then, but I’d be pleased with either Henne or Flacco. Henne will fit Coach Smith’s offensive philosophy well, but Flacco has tremendous upside potential!

If Dimitroff pulls this off, WITHOUT SPENDING ANYTHING OTHER THAN ADDITIONAL PICKS ALREADY ACQUIRED, then Mel Kiper may wet himself.

Saturday is gonna be fun.

As a long suffering falcons fan I’ve seen a lot coaches and general managers. Most have been assistants from successful organizations who attempted to turn the Falcons into clones of the organizations they had just left. This was pretty much what I expected from Dimitroff, I envisioned New England’s Three four defense and a wide open spread offense, but instead we get a recommitment to a traditional Four three and a power running attack. From his first day on the job, Dimitroff has been a pleasent surprise. Clearly he’s learned from people he admires and respects, but seems determined not to become a cheap copy of them. He is very much his own man. I have’nt got a clue where he’s going with this draft, but I sure am looking forward to it.
