Combine Report: NFL types sample nightlife

INDIANAPOLIS — It was rough out on these mean streets of “Nap” town last night.

The NFL types hit the streets after a long day of watching prospects at the RCA Dome.

Oakland head coach Lane Kiffin was out and about. He was at Nicky Blaine’s, a popular cigar bar, with his father and Tampa Bay assistant Monte Kiffin. Lane Kiffin was later seen cutting the rug at Ike & Jonesys. Maybe we can look for him on “Dancing with the Stars” in the future.

Also spotted at Ike & Jonesys: New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese.

That’s where news got out that Arkansas running back Darren McFadden is not only battling a paternity suit, but that he told a team during an interview Saturday night that he has two children on the way. In addition to meeting with the Falcons, he met with the Raiders, who pick fourth in the draft, and several other teams.

McFadden created a major buzz at the NFL scouting combine when he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.27 seconds on Sunday.

McFadden ran right after Georgia running back Kregg Lumpkin ran a 4.64. On McFadden’s second timed 40-yard run, he was clocked at 4.33 seconds.

Just getting ready for another day.

My colleague Steve Wyche is currently in the morning’s first quarterback and receiver session. He just sent me a text message about Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm. That’s big news if he’s throwing because he skipped the Senior Bowl. Steve will update on that later.

I’m going into the second session, courteous of an access deal brokered by Alex Marvez, president of the Pro Football Writer’s Association and will check out Matt Ryan if he takes part.

How many mopre red flags do people need to see before they realize the Falcons would be DUMB to take McFadden? 2 bar fights, 3 out of wedlock kids, and possible connection with an agent at school. He’s another problem child and Goodell made it vewry clear he will be hard on teams that take a chance on guyts who end up later getting into trouble. If the Falcons take him at 3 they deserve to keep being the same ole Falcons.

A month or so ago I was all about McFadden but the last thing we can take a chance on is another bad character guy. He will not be Mike Vick and he may not be a D. Hall but one thing is fir sure he is not a grounded as an A. Peterson. Sure he has talent but where is he b/w the ears? I am all about getting one of the two def. lineman or the off. tackle Long with that first pick and use a later pick for QB. If we really like Brohm we might be able to pull a three team deal with the Giants and another team to move D.Hall the 31st pick in the draft and one of our 2nd round picks to get another top 15 pick to get Brohm.

OK I am convinced now Jake Long is our pick !!!Mike Kenn was the last Tackle we picked out of MICHIGAN and he worked out pretty well. The Falcons really dont need this. I know they say what you do in your private life is your own business but I think what we learn from Vick is that sometimes what you do outside of work does effect those out work. I say we draft a OFFENSIVE LINE instead of waiting for MCFADDEN to finish creating one…..Also you have to figure there are hotter woman in the ATL than Arkansas…so if he comes here there will be McFadden’s everywhere.

What a surprise. Major SEC athlete fathers two kids before he even gets out of college. Classy group, those SEC athletes !!! But, as we all know, in the SEC the only thing that matters is wins and losses. Cover up the character flaws and forget the “student” part of student-athlete, as long as they can run like the wind and get you into a nice bowl game. SEC stinks to high heaven.

I loved McFadden a few months ago but the more I think about it, the more I realize that Jake Long is the best pick. McFadden will need a line to run behind and we don’t have one. And as far as QB, Matt Ryan is good but he’s no Peyton Manning. The trick to winning teams like the Eagles and Pats is to improve the lines. While the picks aren’t sexy, they will give us a foundation to win a championship. Oh, and trade D-Hall to the Giants or Skins for a 1st round pick. We don’t need his Me-Angelo attitude anymore. And I love Dunn but his time is over as is Keith Brooking’s. Let’s start over and build a championship team.

Mr. McFadden is already building a spotless reputation around the league and with his new Georgia-Falcons fans. It is embarrazing to have to listen from now on his high- powered-stallion conception rate and his exploits on women wanting his valuable gene pool. What a sorry/pathetic example for the growing young football fans.

If the Falcons are going to draft players who bring leadership, character and teamwork, then McFadden is the LAST guy they want. It doesn’t matter how good he is, sooner or later, he’ll get in trouble and let them down. Haven’t they had enough of that already.

Two words: Jake Long.

Mcfadden ran a 4.27 in the 40 yard dash thats better than AP in Minnesota Atlanta needs to draft this kid 3rd overall. build the o-line threw free agency and d-line, safety threw the draft trade d-hall for a high first round pick not low first round give shockley and redman chance to manage the game.

By Tommy Ballgame

February 24, 2008 3:39 PM | Link to this

The Falcons HAVE to pass on McFadden. We don’t need another Vick or an attitude like MeAngelo. McFadden has already been in two bar fights this past year where he broke his toe kicking someone.

Get Jake Long or one of the DT’s and call it a day and consider youself lucky.

By Paladin

February 24, 2008 3:46 PM | Link to this

I think that just about answers our debate on who the Falcons should pick with the 3rd pick in the draft. We need a homerun hitter to draw back the fans interest and funnel the money back into the organization. McFadden is that guy in this draft. I don’t care about his off field troubles. If you want to win sometimes you just have to take a chance. Look at Randy Moss. As for drafting offensive lineman, veterans are better suited for a team like the Falcons. The only other person in the draft that I would even consider is Glenn Dorsey. We can get a quarterback in the second or third round. This draft is deep with quarterbacks.

Draft McFadden, who doesn’t have kids and yes we all know of great people that have illegitimate kids. Don’t waist the first pick on a QB that still has to adjust, and we have veteran lineman in FA this year don’t waist a 1st pick also get more for DHall in the first round and get lineman throughout we can even get a quality TE in the draft.

By Phillip

February 24, 2008 4:57 PM | Link to this

Just say “NO” to the fast McFadden - apparently he’s a little “too fast” with multiple paternity suits and multiple bar fights…….the last thing the Falcons need is to replace one “troubled star”(Vick) for another one(McFadden).

Let’s take a talented player with no off-field issues for a change. How about Jake Long or Glen Dorsey, anyone? yeah…

By some sense

February 24, 2008 4:57 PM | Link to this

Darren McFadden is a walking issue and distraction, apparently. He’s the human equivalent of “everything good is either sinful or fattening”.

By NotKidding

February 24, 2008 5:05 PM | Link to this

Are these the “off field issues” that everybody is referring to with McFadden or did he do something that vilated rules, laws or assault someone, etc.? In this day and age, an athlete having unprotected sex with (at least) 3 women is not that big a deal. I mean…. Tom Brady & Brian Uhrlacher (sp) have “Baby Mama’s” - do they not???!!!

Personally, I think the Falcon’s would be foolish to consider a running back b/c nobody can run behind the line they have. If hey build up a halfway decent line, then even an average back will look pretty good (as will an average QB).

By Phildo

February 24, 2008 5:16 PM | Link to this

OK. He’s fast. Very fast, but it looks like he has character flaws. Do the Falcons want to go down this path again? Get a biiiiiiiigggggg lineman instead and then a good running back with good character. Good-bye, Dunn, we will miss you, character, skilla and all.

By gabby

If what we read here about Mcfadden is true then let me be the first to say to the Falcons stay as far away as you can. If his personal life consists of these type of indiscretions then we don’t need him here. Find someone with some morals and talent and try to build from there.

By Somer

McFadden will be a distraction no matter what team he is own. Unfortunately men do not understand what I am about to say. When your personal life is messy, than you will not do well in your professional life. I don’t care if your are playing profession sports or wiping old azzes for a living. If you look at the most successful men on this earth, you will find a family man whose life is in order. Bill Gates, Obama, Brett Favre just to name my favorites.

Several teams will try to pick him up cause RIGHT NOW, he is the best. Men don’t look at other men’s personal life and judge on that. Your personal life is your character. Right now McFadden is showing these owners up front that he has very little character but they will ignore that cause he is FAST!

This is a complete no-brainer, both business and football-wise.

If they can’t get Ryan, then Joe Flacco of Delaware. He’s bigger than Ryan, a better natural passer, and he’s got a sense of humor.

McFadden will not last 3 years in the NFL. Either he’ll go bankrupt from child support, or his tiny, spindly knees will give out. Remember William Andrews? From the knees up, one of the best backs in history. But, he could not take the pounding.

The Falcons need to put Gwinnett and Cobb County butts in Fulton County seats. They will not accomplish that by going with another guy with character issues. They need a confident field leader and a proven winner. Someone with brains AND balls.

Then again, in our society where irresponsibility is the ever increasing norm, why should anyone be surprised? The excuse makers and rationalizers will come out of the cracks and point to other individuals and say ” Well, so and so did this too.” The lack of good judgment in small things indicates the lack of good judgment in large things. Hey you should have talked to Jerry Reese, the first black GM of the N.Y. Giants, as to where he got all those talented defensive lineman and linebackers for that feroucious Giant defense. This man has a pipeline to some talent in the college ranks. These guys were young, strong, fast, and good. ANd their bench is deep with talent. And he is getting ready to make another coo by trying to get De Angelo Hall from the Falcons. And yeah they have a mouth on the team and his name is Strahan. He has a mouth just like D’ Hall. He talks the game and the Giants and the team love it. He motivates them and talks their true feelings. That is why they are SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS.
