Choice might fit with Falcons

Indianapolis — Georgia Tech running back Tashard Choice is on the Atlanta Falcons’ draft-day screen.

He met with Atlanta personnel at the Senior Bowl, he met with them again at the NFL Combine on Thursday and is set to interview with some more Falcons officials on Saturday.

This draft is deep at running back and Choice does not have ideal pro size. (His official combine measurables: 5 feet, 11 inches, 215 pounds.)

Choice is projected to go in the fourth round by NFLDraftScout.com, but Choice’s productivity at Georgia Tech — back-to-back 1,400-yard campaigns — can’t be ignored.

He plans to complete all drills and tests at the combine. Choice, a Lovejoy High grad, hopes to run a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash.

“People think I’m a 4.5, 4.6 guy,” Choice said. “Last week, I tested at API (Athlete’s Performance Institute) on an electronic timer and I ran a 4.48. I want to run a sub 4.4 time and actually boost myself up in this draft.”

Playing in a pro-offense under Chan Gailey at Tech has helped Choice in his interviews at the combine.

“They know I understand the game of football and the different things I had to do on the board,” Choice said. “So when we are going through the interview process, to actually know what’s going on has helped me tremendously.”

Gailey, who was named the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, is at the combine, too.

“I just saw Coach (Chan) Gailey this morning for the first time,” Choice said. “He’s happy. He seems well. He came down to the Senior Bowl and spoke to me.”

Should the Falcons make a move for Choice in the third or fourth round?

If Jerious Norwood is a part of the Falcons’ future, they need to go after a power running back who will provide what Norwood can’t provide. Choice doesn’t fit that bill.

Love to see DHall gone as much as he would like to go. We need to build a team where character and team player is as important as ability. NO more pay me MeAngelo crap! Time to put your big house in Braselton for sell Dhall and sell all of your cars and head out!

Choice would be a solid pick in the 4th. Getting MeAngelo off the team will be a great move. If we can get a pick anywhere would be icing on the cake.

It can not hurt to have talent from the Atlanta area on the team. We need to draft ol and dl to help the team. Macffadden may not be the anwser so why not take a chance on choice.

Good Luck To Choice. I loved dude’s play and attitude at Tech. I don’t wanna see him as a Falcon though we need a bruiser to compliment Norwood.

d.orlando ledbetter, with a name like that you should have been one of lewis grizzard’s cronys.i posted in a blog not long ago that i thought choice would be a great fit for the falcons.dunn is on his last legs, all those years in the nfl have taken their toll.choice would be a good backup for norwood, hopefully both could stay healthy until choice learns the pro game.dunn is a good man and has been one of the few bright spots for the falcons, but i think it is time for him to hang up the cleats.the birds are in dire need of a community relations move.drafting a player from home town ga tech couldn’t hurt.as a bonus they get a pretty good rb.

No. Being a GT alum, I don’t like to see players drafted by the Falcons. He is a number two back, and would do well to be drafted by a team who wants that. His nagging injuries seem to be linked to Gailey’s extensive use of him. In the NFL he would be expected to play even more, and I don’t think his body would take it. I loved the guy in college, but the pros are several steps up.

I like taking linemen first. There are plenty of QBs and RBs in the draft if the line can block.

I surely think so, looking at what he has done in his college career. Not real big, not real fast, but real productive. Dawgs will say “no”, because he was not part of a “top ten recruiting class”, but that is better than having no class at all.

If the Falcons stay away from RB’s in the early rounds and Choice is still available in the later rounds, then YES.

Choice has the heart and smarts to play in the NFL, but health is a problem. As a Tech fan, I saw every game he played at Tech. He was great and could have been a Heisman type, but he failed to stay healthy. Also, there is no way Choice is running a sub 4.4 forty. Inside or outside, he’s as good as any back I’ve seen for 10 yards, but break-away speed is not his talent.

I will say this, if the Falcons want to upgrade their image with a talented and high character player with great leadership ability, Choice is their guy. He’s a Warrick Dunn type player on and off the field. I wish him the best of luck in the pro’s.

Tashard Choice could be a good “value” pick (the sort a Dimitroff-NE Patriot type GM would like) if he is available in the middle rounds when the Falcons have a chance.

There are a lot of variables. It depends on who the Falcons get a McFadden early…or mostly go with linemen…or other.

From an attitude, productivity standpoint, I would certainly like to see him in a Falcons uniform.

Statistically, it is not likely, but if it did happen, it would make a nice storyline for a franchise in desparate need of a good storyline.

This franchise, with some exceptions, has had a history of not drafting UGA, Tech players (exceptions Keith Brooking, DJ Shockley of note). With the PR issues they’re having, if a local product is on the board and has equal to or better value than some fellow from Oregon?….I hope they take the local fellow….

Mr. Blank understands brand loyalty. You rebuild brand loyalty by winning mostly, but having players the fans already identify with can help at the margins.

By Ed

Yes, because of the low risk. He could end up being a productive NFL back. He has great vision with the ball, and rarely fumbles. He just must continue to work on his speed.

Choice in the 3rd/4th…..probably better than taking McFadden with the 3rd overall. Falcons need to go big with the 3rd pick. Big as in a lineman.

I can only hope that the new management is bright enough to realize a hot shot qb is no good behind a patchwork line. The o-line and d- line need some help. Get a defensive tackle or 2. then a few offense tackles. next year we can get a qb, We can play the year with the guy who finished last year and a good back up. and forget dj schockley. Not only is he not the answer he does not know the question.

By Greg

February 22, 2008 8:02 PM | Link to this

No. Choice is a good (if lightweight) player, but the Falcons have greater needs, viz. both lines, d-backs, q-back, and receivers. Especially O-line. This is of critical importance. They have got to build an Indianapolis/Pgh/NE type O-line to protect the passer and to drive block. Any of these teams’ lines would have made Redman or Harrington look like an all-Pro.

Tashard would be a great fit for ATL. Not necessarily the RB of the future…but a high character guy, hard worker, and tough as nails!!! On another matter…PLEASE GET RID OF D-HALL. I’ve always been a fan of his because I like players who play with a bit of arrogance as long as they can back it up. But to say he feels betrayed is PATHETIC. He’s another useless human being product of “Beamer Ball” at VaTech. He started this garbage (not including his antics) when he said he would sit out if he doesn’t get a new contract before the season starts. Now that….OTHER TEAMS INQUIRE ABOUT HIM…not the other way around you jack-^ss (Hall), he says “I told the Falcons I would play out my contract.” What a piece of garbage. I’m going to use my D-Hall jersey to wash my truck from now on! 2 pics in 1st round (3 and 31) and 2 pics in second round…Dimitroff should JUMP ALL OVER THAT!

lets be realistic-rashard mendenhall is the best rb in this draft. he reminds me of william andrews because he runs with power and tenacity-and lets not forget how fast he is. he rush for 155 yds against sedrick ellis and the usc troj. everybody keep saying draft mcfadden but if it’s 3rd and goal at the 1 yd line, who would you give the ball to? i’m giving it to mendenhall. the area where we had the most trouble with were rushing yds on off. and rushing yds against us on def. the player who we should take with the 1st pick is rashard mendenhall or glen dorsey.

It looks like DHall has put his foot in his mouth. He’ll probably be traded for a 1st rd pick and young CB DIrons will get a shot at starting. Also, this will further increase the need for an effective pass rush, which will likely make DT GDorsey our top priority. If he’s not, we’ll likely trade down and pick a LT. RB and QB won’t be considered until later rds.

If we can get Dorsey and a starting LT in the 1st rd, we can then use our FA money to sign a MLB and RG and resign LB MBoley. That would make us very strong up the middle on DEF(DE’s-JAbraham-JAnderson & DT’s TLewis-GDorsey) and OFF(OT’s draft pick-TClabo, OC TMcClure and OG’s JBlalock-FA). And we’d still have a minimum of 8 remaining picks, 2 in the 2nd rd, to get whatever else we needed.

If he’s still available in the 4th round and we haven’t selected a RB at that point, yeah — makes perfect sense. Choice put up some huge numbers on a couple of very mediocre teams, and I don’t really think a 215-lb. 5’11” guy is too small to succeed in the NFL, although he probably won’t turn into a 25 carry per game guy.

Tashard Choice is what a college student-athlete is all about. He’s a team first guy that more than gets the job done and gets it done in the right way. He also graduated in 4 and half years which is admirable for a non athlete much less an athlete that also transferred. On the field he has exceptional quickness and field vision and runs with great heart and determination. With those qualities and weighing 215 lbs, if he runs a 4.45 or better he won’t be around in the 4th round. Personally I don’t think he’s that fast (hamstring and knee slowed him this year) but if he is he should go pretty fast and have a great pro career. I think he would look great with a horse shoe on the side of his helmet.

He’s gonna be a value pick anywhere he gets picked up on the second day. Teams picking a back on the second day aren’t looking for starters. They’re looking for backups and insurance plans. Those backs generally don’t fumble, fall forward, play hard, and have no personal issues to drag down the team. For Choice: check, check, check and check. He is going to be a steal and pick up somewhere. He’s got too many intangibles on top of 3000 career rushing yards with only two years starting.

I hope my Dolphins pick him up.

choice has proven to be steady snd reliable. However, our defene and offensive lines must be addressed. They are a priority. We already have some good backs and may draft one in earlier rounds. If we do I do not believe we can use another draft pick to choose a back who is good in college but may not fit in the pro game.

As much as I enjoyed watching him perform at GT, I’m not sure if he’s an everydown guy. He’s stout and tough, but not so quick for his size. I’d feel a lot more comfortable with trading D.Hall and pick up an extra first round pick. Grab Jake Long and Mendenhall in the first round. Grab a RG and DT the second round. Then grab Joe Flacco in the third, that’s if he last that long. Let’s just start fresh.

If Choice is there in the 3rd or 4th round, it would be a good pick. I think that Choice will be gone in the 3rd, though. He’s a sleeper pick, and he looks like an NFL player playing college. His game is a pro game.

I just hope that the Falcons do not pick a QB in the 1st round. Matt Ryan is not that good, and I think his game is severly overhyped. I simply think we can get as good a QB as Matt Ryan in the later rounds. The QB position is light this draft.

Me? Get me Jake Long with my first pick. Or to a lesser extent, Glenn Dorsey. And get a QB with some NFL experience, or at least been in the system for a while.

I also have to keep saying this: DJ Shockley, if healthy, will have an excellent shot at starting in 2008. And his game, in 1 year, will make us forget the WOW factor that Mike Vick brought to us when he was playing.

Shockley’s accurate, speedy, and have a rocket arm. He’s better than Matt Ryan, Brian Brohm, or anyone coming out of the draft. He’s squeaky clean (even though his dad had some problems) and he’s a local, hometown kid from up the street. And he has that sizzle to his game that can make him a nice little piece that’ll put behinds in seats.

His main issue, though, is that he’s still green. He played none the year before last. Last season, he got hurt during pre-season, during a game in which he was looking really good- mixing accurate passes with showcasing his running ability. But, he has been in a Pro system for 2 years.

And lastly, I would like to see the Falcons get a nice, strong, clutch receiver as a compliment to our corps. We have a burner, but we need that guy that can catch those 5-7 yard slant routes with good YAC numbers. That will help that O-line by opening up the running lanes. Plus, by having a nice midrange passing attack, we can see good big plays from White.

So, in 2008, if I see the Falcons draft good line help and get a clutch receiver somewhere, and shore up a nice QB in the later rounds, I’ll be happy. If they go out and get Matt Ryan in the first pick, I’ll put on my Rams jersey next season, because it’s a wrap.

Plenty of running backs grading out higher that fit the Falcons scheme prototypically. If the need is running back and he is the best available yeah, sure. It is a shame that Hall is so self-centered, he has never been a team player. I have never seen him hit anyone, EVER! And he won’t, he is saving his body for HIS career. It’s all about DeAngelo, always has been, always will be. It’s a shame when God gives a man natural talent and skill and that man is consumed with himself.

The Falcons should definitely draft Tashard. This team needs more players from Tech and UGA to increase fan support and improve the winning percentage. Not ideal pro size? Not sure about that. Choice will be a long term investment. He’s an NFL back all the way. The Falcons would be stupid not to pick him up. He will have as much, if not more success than any of the big name backs in the draft this year. He can throw, catch and run like a freight train.

I don’t think Choice will fit. No knock on his passion for the game. I love him as a player, and he seems like a good person, but we need a POWER runner, and he is not anything like Jerome Bettis was in Mularkey’s power running offense in Pittsburgh. Mularkey’s offense requires a power runner and a speed demon. We already have a speedster in Jerious Norwood, and we just need that missing piece to complete our running back core.

If the Falcons are looking for tough players full of heart that are great leaders, then yes Deuce would be a great fit. I’d love to have him here.

the kid has heart and thats one thing you cant coach, or measure with a scale of stop watch. as mush as i love tashard and his spirit i think his lack of speed is the only thing that is separates him from other backs in the draft. kinda reminds me of P.J Daniels. not a real speed guy but strong and has good vision. and last time i checked PJ was still in the league. i think their is a place for choice in the league. not really sure he is the answer for the Falscons..

Good Luck Tashard we’re gonna miss you on the Flats..

yes if he’s on the board he’s a steal in the draft as far as runningbacks, man dang the combines and the ideal size, man i hate to say dunn is done, we can use the money from dunn’s salary in free agent, we really need to concentrate on keeping hall happy, and going after another proven vetern reciever, my man white finally showed that he is ready to step up to the plate. Hey i think we have our QB inside our organization, do u remember the man on our roster from GA. name shockey, so i hope we don’t get a QB with the number three pick, because we can get a QB in the second round, how many teams that pick after us need a QB, and there are a few good QBs in this draft that will fall to the second round. So we should get Dorsey or OL Long if they fall in our lap.

Why not? Choice was productive and did what was needed. He ran between the tackles, had injuries, missed games and still lead the ACC with 1,400+ yards in back to back season. Choice is the man. He could be the power back while Norwood is the scat-speed back. Dunn has a few seasons left ih him, one at the most. So we need to make some moves. I think that if we don’t fall on McFadden, then we wait, address other areas and get Choice in the 3rd round.

no…invite him to camp as a free agent if he goes undrafted, which is a possibility, but that should be the only way

the Falcons should make a run at Choice in the later rounds, but only if they don’t pick another RB higher or sign one during free agency or through a trade

What is idea NFL size? There are smaller backs contributing all around the NFL. The Chargers have three-Sproils, Turner, LD Jacksonville has one from UCLA The Patriots have Faulk The Giants have Bradshaw Philly has Westbrook Green Bay has one Denver specializes in backs of all sizes Dallas has a starting back undersized The Vikings has Chester Yes, the Falcons should consider drafting a good back like Choice.

I think he would be a value pick at that stage in the draft. He is the same size as Joe Addai of the Colts and they are very similiar in terms of what they bring to the game. Why not. It is all about the best value. Why not give a local boy a chance to help rebuild the tattered image of the Falcons.

Choice is a good choice, no pun intended. Solid, leader, runs between the tackles, played in a pro style offense and was downright dominant at certain points throughout the season. If the Falcons are looking for a RB in the third or fourth round this is a solid pick. Most importantly Choice is a team guy who want speak out. Since we all know the Falcons don’t want any players who express their own opinion (a la the Patriots).

Choice’s injury and surgery next year are big factors. If he can be cleared as completely healed, there is no doubt he will add value to his hometown team. He is a natural born leader…who happens to be a hell of a football player. the Falcons sorely need decent men who can play ball, not things who can run fast and act as poster boys for a bad attitude. Wake up, Arthur!!!

You heard it here first! Whatever team drafts Choice has the next Adrian Peterson. Choice is going to be better than McFadden in the end. Watch what I tell you!

How about Thomas Brown, who ran all over Tech. He has power, speed, great hands. If he was the primary back for UGA, he would have put up big numbers. But we all know the Falcons are not DAWG fans. That why they’re historical losers. Hey Arthur I heard they’re this great kid at UAB yall like alot.

Give me a break - Choice is a 5th round draft choice - a backup at best and maybe a special teams player. He has had a lot of injuries and mileage on him.

He is a great player. I don’t know why he is projected so low. The ACC is not a bad conference, and he was dominant. This year, he had some injuries, but was still good. I think that he can stay healthy. When he plays, he is awesome..

Where is all this injury stuff coming from? He pulled a hamstring LAST year but came back and still ran for 120+ yds. Then he got his knee messed up on a nasty leg tackle. Anyone would have been hurt on that tackle. Yet he still came back and ran for 120+ yds. That was just his senior year. Adrian Peterson was hurt more in two weeks than Choice was in his entire career. Give me a break. This injury prone crap is Mutt fans that just don’t want a GT guy on the team. Oh and 5’11” 215 lbs is an IDEAL NFL back. The Falcons need a guy with quick burst to the hole and shiftiness after he’s hit it. CHOICER HAS ALL THAT. We have Norwood for homeruns.

Exactly, Lee. Perfect heavy-duty and change-of-pace mix. UGA fans just think the world revolves around them. Good Lord are they sorely mistaken though.

Choice would be an excellent CHOICE for the Falcons. Teamed up with Matt Ryan; a killer combo.

UGA running backs might be a good choice for Waffle House dish washer.

Pick up Jacob Hester as the Thunder and Lightning combo. I honestly don’t think Norwood can do 25carries a game and live to tell about it. Get that big friggin mule in here to pound it out!

I say draft Choice. Choice has proven time and time again that he can follow a big crushing fullback and make his moves at just the right time.

Petrino wouldn’t let you know it last year…but we still have Mughelli. I know McFadden will sell more tickets, but if we can’t get a franchise QB with our #3 pick, then draft defense or O-line and wait to grab Choice later.
