Coach better be worth wait

The Falcons appear poised to wait until after the Super Bowl before naming a head coach - largely because the best potential candidate could be coaching in the championship game.

The Falcons have targeted New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo but per NFL rules, Atlanta can’t interview him until after the Feb. 3 championship game.

The NFL allows assistant coaches to have second interviews for head coaching jobs with other teams during the down week of the two-week gap between conference championship games and the Super Bowl. However, Spagnuolo has not interviewed with Atlanta yet.

The Giants denied him permission two weeks ago because they were preparing to play Dallas in the divisional playoff.

Though there is some concern that previously interviewed candidates Rex Ryan (Baltimore defensive coordinator), Mike Smith (Jacksonville DC) and Leslie Frazier (Vikings DC) could get frustrated by having to wait, their only other head coaching option is Washington. So if the Falcons aren’t able to land Spagnuolo, the other candidates should still be available.

Ryan apparently is the leader in the clubhouse but Smith was said to be impressive as was Frazier, who had his first interview last weekend. Finding quality assistants and coordinators shouldn’t be a problem, either. There are simply too few vacancies now for the talent pool to get diluted.

On that note, Falcons’ officials will spend the next few days in Mobile evaluating college seniors and possibly talking to potential assistants - and maybe head-coaching candidates. The Senior Bowl is a fishbowl full of coaches, many of whom are out of work or are trying to find a new employer.

I’d like to see this blog become what the Braves blog has become…A great link between franchise and fans with continued “inside” information.

The coach they needed to take a look at is marty he can come right in and straight the falcons out in maybe 1 or 2 and competing for a playoff spot.

I have no problem waiting for Spagnuolo, but I don’t see why AB/TD aren’t interviewing everyone they can, e.g. Mike Singletary, Ron Rivera, Russ Grimm, Terry Robiske, and even some junior coaches for their perspectives.

If the coaching search is OFF until TD gets to meet Spagnuolo that reminds me of the blinders of the last search where boxes were checked routinely on the way to a “blood rush” hire of Petrino.

An exhaustive open process might net a surprise hire OR provide vindication for waiting for Spagnuolo… or is that just too much common sense?

I too hope he’s worth the wait. The reason the hiring seems so delayed is because that control freak Arthur had to take his posse on the road to conduct HC & GM interviews simultaneously…dummy. Didn’t it ever dawn on him that his new GM would want to interview these—as well as, his own—candidates?

I tried to get a look at him on the side lines during the game Sunday against Green Bay. He seems to have fire in him.

same ole falcons. spag is good because he has a monster defensive line. he is NOT known for schemes. in fact, in watching the game against the packers, they kept bringing up the fact that his schemes give up big plays when the defensive line doesnt do their job.

I’m personally glad they’re taking their time with this hire. If the NYG defensive coordinator is worth a damn, then two weeks’ wait will seem like nothing.

I was listening to Colin Cowherd on ESPN radio this morning and he was adept to point out the “tough, non-players’ coach” coaches were the two left playing on Super Sunday. Any coordinator of Coughlin’s will be tough as nails, himself, but I also think will have the ability to balance it w/good player relations, given what they’ve all gone through in NY w/the Giants.

So who are the options for our offensive coordinator, though? Our candidates are all defensive guys, and defense wasn’t our problem in ‘07.

And for that matter, why is nobody talking about Brian Billick coming here? We need a srtong, offense-minded head coach, and that’s his background (even if he did draft Kyle Boller).

Oh, and he’s sporting a gaudy Super Bowl ring.

This seems like another case of Arthur Blank going for the headline grabbing move. I don’t think he’ll take the job anyway but if you look at Spagnuolo’s background, its no more impressive than any of the other candidates. In fact, take out this historic hot run that the Giants are on and he would not be considered worth waiting for. Smith at Jacksonville and Frazier at Minnesota have more experience and Frazier has played and coached on winning Super Bowl teams. We need a coach that is ready to deal with adversity. Ryan at Baltimore and Schwartz at Tennessee also have a larger body of work. Is Spagnuolo, with only one year as def. coordinator ready to lead a rebuilding team? It’s too big of a jump in my opinion.

Spagnuolo will probably take the Redskins job instead and make Atlanta look foolish and even more unattractive. What happened Marty S. anyway. That guy is a proven winner.

Do we have any of our writers in Mobile? I heard a rumor that Frazier was in Mobile with the Falcons. Any truth to that one?

The coach, whoever it is, probably won’t be any better than all the rest in Falcon history. We hired a 41 year old guy as GM. His credentials are suspect…being the 3rd or 4th on the administrative depth chart. Now we are going to hire an inexperienced coach to match the GM’s inexperience.

I will be shocked if the Falcons can really evaluate coaching and GM talent. It sure wouldn’t be in character for them.

I’m very excited about the hiring of the new GM. I’ve been a Falcon fan for 30 years and want a coach who can fullfill the potential of the current players and motivate them.

My question is why aren’t we interviewing Marty Schotenheimer.(Sorry if I spelled it wrong.)

Thanks

I guess time will tell but If he is offered the job and he turns it down, which I expect he will, the next guy will have to live with being the second choice. Then Sean Saliburys comment that the next coach for the Falcons is getting hired to be fired hold a little more water. Only time will tell, and Dimitroff was a great hire, so we did something right.

If you are Steve Spagnuolo who would you want to go be a head coach for? The Joe Gibbs built playoff Redskins or the hapless, quarterbackless, busybody Blank owned Atlanta Falcons?

So far all the really good candidates are staying put with bigger paychecks or going somewhere else. I am not hopeful with this one.

Once again why isn’t Dennis Green been even consider. He rebuilted the vikes and all that talent on the cards he drafted all of them. There 4-6 future or current pro bowler his staff brought in and his last draft put out 5 starts on this years team. Half of the sorry players we draft after round 4 are on the inactive player or out of the league.

Sweet stick,

If you want people to read your comments and give them some consideration, you might try writing them in English, not gibberish. Thank God, you’re not on the Falcon’s interview committee.

Patriots OC Josh McDaniels is currently the leading candidate for the HC position in Atlanta.

I think it’s sad that fans of this team has to sit through another disaster of waiting for management to decide on a coach. It appears that the Falcons are snake bitten because the names that keep appearing on their “I want list” keep rejecting them. This really says a lot about the leadership of this organization because no-one wants to coach or play for the Falcons. The Falcons makes it extremely easy for me not to want to continue supporting what has become a joke around the National Football League.
