Fourteen down, two to go
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Tampa — Same old story for the Falcons. Minus Bobby Petrino, the Falcons were beaten soundly by Tampa Bay, 37-3, Sunday. The Falcons were haunted by turnovers — two interceptions and two fumbles. They were haunted by penalties — costly pass interference and personal foul calls. They were haunted by big plays — an interception return and a kickoff return for touchdowns. Two games left before this season like no other is over. The only question left is will they get the No. 2 overall draft pick.

Same song - 14th verse. What a horrible, pathetic football team this is. Too bad this whole sorry bunch didn’t go to Arkansas with Petrino - they deserve each other. Looks like they mailed this one in - again. If they were playing for pride I guess they ain’t got any. Glad it’s almost over.

The last time there was a crash and burn of this magnitude, it was the Hindenburg; but the exclamation is appropriate: “Oh, the humanity!”
Is there anyway the Falcons could just forfeit the last two games to avoid the embarrassment?
One issue was settled today and that is one of our quarterbacks will return to selling insurance.
It was pitiful as the Bucs strutted up and down the field like the Morris Brown Marching Band.
Brother Blank, I feel your pain and suggest you take drastic measures and not “cut the man’s leg off an inch at the time.”
Bite the bullet, take your losses and lay a proper foundation for the future.

Hmmmm, Seems to me Petrino isn’t the only problem with this team. What a classless group of whiners and babies! Thug-Hall needs to go. What a classless piece of beetle dung! The other dog killer still on this team is a piece of human waste. King Arthur, until you fire this lot of thugs and thieves, forever named because they steal the fans money, your team will always be known as a loser! HA! I love the fact this team and this town will forever be known as losers and loserville. New nickname should be the Atlanta Thugs! Hey ATL,aka thugsville, how’s it feel to be the worst franchise in NFL history?

They looked bad today and all season long. I don’t expect them to win the last two games. As far as the draft….McFadden and then trade or draft for some blocking. Special teams are absolutely horrible!!! The birds need to establish some kind of identity this offseason. How they draft will let us know what they plan on doing.
Deal with the sketchy QB play for another season. Some vet might come along for the right price.

Questions for Mr. Blank that haven’t been answered: Did you in fact tell a player or players prior to this weeks follies that Petrino was a mistake? Did you confront Petrino about a prayer he led the team in? Did you hire Mora and Petrino? Did you think that better parking, concessions, new uniforms, apology letters, etc. would translate to wins on the field? Did you give M. Vick a ridiculous contract and defend/cover-up a string of incidents? Did you bow to fan pressure or your own ego or both in firing Dan Reeves? The blame belongs to you, what in your past made you believe you could run a football team? Your favorite line is that you are helping the city, no you are not!

I can’t believe that I am first! Boy,this was the worst played game by the Falcons. First thing they need is a no-nonsense drill master of a coach; second, big guys on the o-line;last, they need a “winner take all” attitude and aggression. Today, they were merely patsies to the Bucs. Draft Matt Ryan in the first round, Mike Hart or Ray Rice with the second pick

Let’s go Jets and Rams! However, the Falcons are going to be lost for a long time. This team needs a complete rebuilding. Need LBs, DBs, QBs, RBs, WRs, an entire offensive line, and a new head coach.
This team is severely lacking in talent, and that’s the only thing I cannot blame on Petrino. When Vick went to jail, Petrino was left with a bunch of underachieving players.

Is that the worst performance by an NFL QB in league history? 2 Ints, 2 fumbles lost and a 27% pass completion. Why would anyone continue using this completely washed up QB after 1 quarter. Why because this staff is not NFL staff. I hope they all are looking for jobs right now, because not one should be coming back. Dunn should retire plain and simple because he is way over the hill and another team will never pick him up. This team needs so much, but they should draft the best OT (Jake Long) to build the future around.

It doesn’t matter what draft pick they get. It wouldn’t matter if they got ALL of the draft picks and could hand pick as many players and coaches from other teams as they wanted. 40+ years of underachieving performance have proven this franchise to be cursed. Arthur Blank, please take your franchise toy and leave. A new city would appreciate even this bunch for a few years.

I wish they could’ve won for Emmitt, but it’s evident that this team is going to need a total overhaul on offense. It starts with drafting McFadden, no question about it. QBs are too risky, but a stud RB is just what this team needs. Spend any money available on the O-line. A combo of McFadden-Norwood would not only help the defense rest by staying off the field, it would help whatever QB they pick up knowing they won’t have to do everything. I think if they get the number 2 pick in the draft then they don’t have a choice but to pick up McFadden. You can get a QB like Chad Henne in the second round.
I can’t wait for this sad season to end either, but I still root for the Falcons.

Agree that backstabber Putridwino is toilet scum. That said. Who are the Falcons going to blame their quitting ways on now? Interim coach? Media? Santa Claus? No, it is an inner question. Players on this team went bellyup before first regular season kickoff. That was obvious to all true Falcon followers. Have seen every snap since 1966. Talk about pain. Solution. Clean house except for Andersen, Norwood and (reluctantly, considering debacle) Redman. Starting over only viable option. When professionals quit it is time for them to move on. Every Falcon veteran declined to put forth any effort this season. Losing understandable. Not trying is not. Like I said before, love Falcons, hate guys presently wearing uniforms. God bless Andersen and Norwood. A curse on all the rest. Merry Christmas!

Falcons reflect the disfunction of their cities namesake. Been a Falcon fan since the beginning we have stunk 98% of that time. However, the ranker and polarization of the fan base has never been like this. We have always thought the Smith’s had no business owning a football franchise however, there was hardly any pure hate like we’re seeing now. We have had sorry a$$ players for years but we sort of embraced them as our own (regardless of color). Now we have sorry a$$ players and coaches and some people love them and some seem to hate them without remorse. This team has managed to pull the worst of our society on to the football field. The one place in the past we did have some common ground. I think clean house. Change the atmosphere bring in new blood and let’s regroup. There is NOTHING on the field today to build on.

Yes they will get that pick!
Jets will most likely beat KC at home last game of the season, 49ers will win one more game, most likely Arizona and St. Louis will win a game…leaving the 3-13 Falcons with the number 2 pick in the draft.
Welcome to the ATL, Darren McFadden, unless the FINS sell out and trade the 1st pick in the draft to a team that wants #5 on their team.
Regardless of the QB situation, Falcons have to take McFadden if he is available. You can’t pass up on a potential ALL Pro RB who has the ability to take it to the house every time he touches the ball!

If there was any doubt about how bad the Falcons are, it should be clear after that debacle. With or without Petrino, they stink. 1. Clean house. Have a trading fire sale. DeAngelo Hall just can’t go a game without showing his lack of self discipline and game sense. Trade him for draft picks. I would say do the same with some of the other chuckleheads like White, Jenkins, Brooking, and Crumpler but I doubt you’d gat any takers on them. 2. If you won’t fire McKay, give him a job away from personnel selection where is poor judgement will not be a factor. 3. Banish Blank from all team functions and facilities. Let him learn from Ted Turner to get away from the team. I’m sure there are all kinds of feel good, silly a$$ stuff he could devote his time to. 4. Draft quality linemen. The only way to win in football - Period.

I just finished watching the first half of the Falcons game, and I think I may have finally just had it for a while. The players actions on both sides just put me over the edge. I am disgusted with the celebrations and fights and constant show of disrespect to each other and the officials. I just realized that I don’t want to spend my Sundays any longer watching those people, and I no longer want my kids watching them either, which is not an issue because my kids gave up before I did. Those people on the field no longer represent the values that are important to me and my family, and for a while (maybe for a long while), we will no longer watch or attend or support the NFL or the Falcons. It’s turned into a game for thugs and low lifes, and we no longer want to be associated with it.

From NFL.COM
Petrino assistants were ready to leave If Bobby Petrino didnt leave for Arkansas first, there would have been a mass exodus of Falcons assistant coaches. Many of them, even the majority of them, couldnt stomach the idea of working another season for a head coach that had lost the trust and faith of his assistants.
Had Petrino stayed, many assistants wouldnt have. As it is, not all Falcons assistant coaches will be back.
For starters, interim head coach Emmitt Thomas had been planning to retire after this season after an illustrious career, and it looks like this will be his final three games. Thomas has much to look forward to after this season.
Thomas is one of two senior candidates, along with former Chicago Cardinals back Marshall Goldberg, nominated for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Class of 2008.
Even before arriving in Atlanta, Thomas certainly has served his time in football. He starred for 13 seasons for the Kansas City Chiefs and intercepted 58 passes. Thomas was a key component of the Chiefs defenese that won AFL titles in 1966 and 1969.

The falcons always manage to win just enough games to screw up their position in the draft. We need it now more than ever - let’s get rid of all the Vick apologists that are poisoning the team’s attitude and replace them with young talented players.

Yes, they’ll get the #2 pick in the draft.
Appalls me to see so many pile onto Petrino…this team quit before he did.

Somebody tell Petrino there is a job opening at West Virginia. Think he will bolt from Arkansas? Never know with this guy. I’m just glad he is out of Atlanta.

This is about as ugly as it can possible be. I was optamistic until now. Rich McKay has got to go! This is a mess and it’s a direct result of McKay making bad personnel decisions over and over again. When is Authur going to realize that McKay is a bad evaluator of talent. Our biggest problem is not hiring the right coach as much as hiring the right GM. We need talent. J. Williams-BUST, Crocker trade-BUST, L. Milloy/too old-BUST, Leftwich/3 million wasted dollars-BUST, letting Petrino cut G. Jackson-BAD MOVE, trading Rossum to start Jennings-STUPID, J. Anderson-jury is still out but I like him(Mario Williams didn’t do well last year either), Justin Blaylock(cross our fingers)-a maybe, too early to tell but has been inactive last two weeks and is not injured, J. Horn-BUST, M. Jenkins-BUST, J. Beck-BUST, A. Jennings-BUST, Ed. Hartwell-BUST, Petrino-Bust. I understand the Mora move but I know there is a lot more moves that I’m probably not thinking of. How about that resume. Is that not enough to prove to Authur that he needs to move in another direction as far as GM. I love Authur but I think he is way to loyal to the wrong people and it’s costing this franchise. Now I love Mike Vick, and I mean I love Mike Vick, but I also call it like I see it. We had a better NFL QB. right here and then McKay, who should have realized that despite contracts, traded him. Winning is not everything, it is the only thing. Might sound bad but is so true, at least on this level. Draft picks are great but a great QB. is invaluable. If Authur is serious about winning he needs to not make decisions worrying about friendships(Mike Vick and Rich McKay), but make decisions that are best for this franchise to be successful. Winning is the cure all in sports. This city, including myself, will let Vick go if we just prove to be a winner. We just want to win. Please, bring people in here that have heart, willing to lay everything on the line to win. Great athletes get you to the NFC championship game. Big hearts rub dirt on their wounds, tapes it up then wins a Lambardi Trophy. Look at New England. Players are willing to do anything and play anywhere just to win. How many players do we have that will do the same thing. No one sacrifices their bodies to make plays. No big blocks, no bigs hits on D. Why not. Same reason this team quits at the end of every season, especially when there is nothing to play for. NO HEART!!! This team needs to re-evaluate everyone in this entire organization, especially the leaders because the last time I checked: Attidude Reflects Leadership.

No matter what the players say, or how insulted they are by Petrino leaving, they are solely to blame for not showing up on the field. The failure is theirs, and theirs alone. They quit on themselves a long time ago.

It’s hopeless, not just for this season, but for the foreseeable future. With McKay controlling free agency and the draft picks, it doesn’t matter how much $$$ Blank is willing to give up. He just doesn’t have the savvy to put together a good team. I’m sorry to be such a downer, but reality is reality. One thing: I hope someone gets to Mckay about the necessity to trade Hall—-he’s poison on this team. This is bleak, bleak, bleak. One indicator today (typical) of huge problems: in the first series, Mughelli (one of many very expensive worthless McKay ventures) drops a soft ball thrown right into his hands. A couple minutes later, Dunn does the same. Ever notice that the good teams don’t do this? They also don’t have linemen continually false-start—-even the Falcons wide-outs were often guilty of false-starting this year. This is stupidity, guys.

I really wonder if the players realize that they are playing for their job or not? This game was hurled up on Tuesday… But, I agree with Coach Thomas that they should be trying to get their character back. Otherwise, I am not opposed to getting rid of any player on the team.
Something has to change before next year or this franchise is in deep trouble.

Sometimes you reap what you sow. The Falcons are now suffering the consequences of embracing the thug culture, of hiring thugs and building the whole team around a hard core criminal (oh I’m sorry, I forgot, he just “made a mistake”). For years now the Atlanta media has tried to shove the greatness of Arthur Blank down our throats. Even now his sycophants and boot lickers on the radio and TV are trying to blame everything on Patrino. Jeff Van Note is particularly pitiful case in point. On today’s post game show he told a caller if we all would just trust “Mr. Blank” everything will be OK. He could not even resist a shot at Rankin Smith and family, who he apparently he believes were a bunch of dumb rednecks who could not get it done. Right Jeff, your Mr. Blank is certainly getting it done. I’ve been a Falcon fan since 1967, but I took great pleasure in watching them be humiliated today. They disgraced this whole town Monday night with their disgusting tribute to a lowlife, while at the same time they were getting kicked all over the field. I love this town, but the Falcons and Mike Vick’s supporters have made have made it look like a joke, and not a funny one. Not one person on that team, or in that organization, has had anything to say about that shameful spectacle. That is the kind of organization “Mr. Blank” is running. This is the guy whose judgment we need to trust. But hey, even the Mayor of Atlanta thinks Mike Vick is a great guy. Mike’s people even drug out poor ole Hank Aaron to write a letter about how sweet and thoughtful Mike is. Well, someone wrote the letter and got Hank to sign it. Hank obviously did not write it. Hank can barely write his own name. That is where we are in this town. SAD SAD SAD.

Ouch, the wounded birds got their wings clipped yet again! I didn’t see one positive thing about the Falcons in this game, and it will be a long time till I have any respect for this organization of losers.Arthur Blank it’s time to clean house of all those Vick loving thugs that call themselves pro football players! My money is staying in my pocket.

So these guys were going to play hard for interim Coach Thomas eh? So much for that idea. They should be ashamed of themselves. Looks like they quit on him too. After 40 years in the NFL, he deserved much better.
And this nonsense about getting someone like Bill Cowher to manage this bunch of misfits? Nothing more than a pipe dream. They’d be lucky to get Marty Shottenheimer or Jason Garrett to committ to this join this cluster %&#$. How can this bunch be taken seriously?
Fire Rich McKay now. Then at least half the team after the season is mercifully over. Clear the board and start over IMO.

Regardless of how cowardly Petrino is, if what he said about Blank’s meddling in football affairs is true ( I believe they are) this team will probably never have a successful franchise HC.
At least Jerry Jones played football.

The Falcons have failed miserable since Arthur Blank purchased the team from Smith family. The draft picks have been so-so,head coach approval and selection, Vicks pamper, increase ticket prices, appearance on sidelines, and GM weakness had spurred this condition.. Mr Blank cant operate a Pro football franchise like a Home Depot. The spot light is greater, press presents greater visibility for results and you have to please millions of audience every Sunday. It has not happen under his watch. If a successful coach cannot change the environment the Falcons will be FOR SALE as losers again.

The Falcons su@#. Blank needs to * FIRE McKAY tonight! Hire Dan Reeves as GM and clean house.* Make D. Hall one of the first to good. I will never pay to watch Hall play for Falcons again. The whole team is made up of thugs and thugs run it.Mr Blank you have been taken by: McKay, Vick and Petrino. Its time to wake up and start over.

In 24 years as a die hard Falcons fan I have never in my life seen things as bad as they are right now. While I will never give up on this team they sure can find ways to make even the best fan cringe. I wish the Atlanta Falcons football team cared as much about winning on Sunday afternoon as the fans do, and I wish they cared as much about winning as they do about showing up at the end of the month for a PAYCHECK. I think every team including the Colts, and Patriots have players that want to get paid but they also have players that want to win and get paid and unfortunately the Falcons have very few players that have that mentality. It’s heartbreaking as a fan to watch this team lose and lose and lose over and over and over again, I wish that for once in my lifetime I could see the Falcons be a good football team, just once, but of course I’d have to pinch myself if it ever happened to make sure I was still alive.

Perhaps these losers did not deserve to be told face-to-face by Petrino that he was leaving. The players had already left for all intents and purposes.

The falcons number one need is to have someone in management who can recognize a coach if one should happen to be in the area. If, by some miracle, a coach should actually be recognized and be hired then the next need is for the owner to get himself in a box seat far from the field and leave the coaching to the coach.

We all knew this season was already lost before today, but I don’t think it was wise to start Redman since he won’t be here next year. Remmeber, this team had to make a total overhaul on offense in less than a week. Tampa’s playing at an all time level with their defense. I didn’t expect them to win today. The rest of this team has never gotten into any sort of rhythm this year.
I think that if Miami does take McFadden then Atlanta will go after Matt Ryan as their QB, then get an RB like Mike Hart. Either way Atlanta will need to revamp their offense next year to become a true power running team.
Wasting time blaming Blank, Vick, Petrino, McKay (although I do think he needs to lose his GM duties) isn’t worth it. I want to see how they will change for the better. Say what you want about Blank, no one was roasting him when he hired Petrino or when he drafted Vick. Everyone was happy he let go of Dan Reeves.
Oh well I guess when you deal with shortsighted people you get these types of responses. Why don’t the rest of you who have quit on the Falcons go join the Saints blog or something? Real fans don’t need you here.
