No word on Redman, but he looks like the guy

The Falcons have been off the past two days, so there has been no official word as to whether Chris Redman will be named the starting quarterback. However, all indications are pointing that way.

This could be another interesting development in the quarterback stakes because if Redman gets his chance and performs well, he could be a player the Falcons bring back next season - maybe not as the starter, but as a backup who could help any new quarterbacks learn the system.

I was going through some game stuff from the St. Louis loss and there was one noticeable change once Redman came into the game: the involvement of the tight ends in the passing game.

Since Redman gets rid of the ball quickly, there isn’t the need to keep one, if not both tight ends in protection. Of tight end Alge Crumpler’s season-high seven receptions against the Rams, four came in the fourth quarter. For a good portion of the game, Crumpler and/or Dwayne Blakley were used in protection because Joey Harrington took a longer time to get rid of the ball, leaving him susceptible to pressure.

If Redman is the guy Monday night against the Saints, it will be interesting to see if he can carry over his short-term success into a full game in which the opposing team has had time to game plan for him. Keep in mind, the only tape St. Louis had on Redman was from 2003, in which he played in just two games and threw a total of 13 passes.

He completed 16 (of 24) vs. St. Louis.

Redman is the longterm solution at quarterback. He’s accurate, mobile, strong arm. In his prime. Now we can concentrate on getting us a few more tight ends in the draft. Cause as all of you know, I really loooove tight ends.

I say start Redman because the other 2 yahoos sure don’t impress. We need some reason to tune in on Monday. Enough of the McFadden talk. Isn’t it obvious that we need a QB. Also, McFadden is not AD. If AD was available last year at our spot in the draft, he would be on our team now. Matt Ryan should be the man. I hope Brohm is not selected because he only benefitted from the system. Kinda like Harrington’s numbers. I have heard a few times from the press that Harrington has not played that bad. Obviously they are looking at stats and not the game.

If the Falcons have the #2 pick, they can’t take a QB without trading down a few spots. I’m not sold on any of the QBs in this year’s draft, but I do believe that Ryan or Woodson would be preferable to Brohm. I just have this feeling that Blank will intercede, causing the Falcons to McFadden at #2 and take the chance that he could be the next cash cow for the franchise.

Makes you wonder why Redman didn’t get a chance before now. He looked like a REAL Professional Quarterback against St Louis, even though the Rams are not a good team.

Let’s give Redman a chance. If we lose with Redman, we get a higher draft pick anyway. If we win with Redman, we may have found a decent quarterback for next year, either as a starter or a back-up. You never know - look at what happened with Kurt Warner in St Louis, when he came over from the Arena League and won the SuperBowl as their QB!

It would be great if Redman was another Kurt Warner that came out of nowhere to lead us to the Super Bowl. But let’s not forget it was the Rams! But hey, we haven’t had a whole lot to cheer about this year so go Redman! Just don’t cost us that #2 pick.

If given a chance he can’t do any worse than Harrington. He knows Petrino’s offense very well. If he can keep from turning the ball over he’ll show he is at least as good as any other qb on the team, if not better.

Kurt Warner Arena League, Tom Brady 6th round draft pick, Tony Romo, low rounds, Brett Favre, etc. Remember, QB’s from smaller schools that have to have quick releases are what you want, not some stiff from the SEC. Never take a 1st round QB that is you future unless it is a Peyton Manning because they rarely ever turn out decently.

Steverino….if you dont care….get off OUR blog!!!

I know you all won’t believe this…but…I’ve wanted to see Redman play since before we signed Leftwich. If I remember correctly he was playing well with the Ravens and was given the keys to the team before his injury. Steve is absolutely right about the change in the offense when C-Red (I’ll claim the patent on that nickname from this point forward)came into the game. The energy in general improved.

There is no question that he should start. He’s the only QB thats shown any life and who knows, we may have found our starter! Think thats Crazy? Kurt Warner - came from nowhere, Tony Romo- undrafted free agent, Joe Montana - 3rd round pick, Tom Brady - 5th round pick.

Hi profile means nothing. Results are the only thing that matters.

Go Falcons.

Even if they had Namath in his prime next year the record would be the same. THEY can not run the ball because they do not have enough big time linemen. If they take a QB or Back in the draft by passing on Long it would be a Big mistake. Besides in 12 to 18 months you know who will be back. And Authur may be alot of things but stupid is not one of them, He’ll forgive and He’ll play.

I have harped ALL SEASON that Putridwino should play Redman! When a ship is sinking it does not make any sense to ignore inflated life rafts. I have seen far more than I care to of Interception King Harrington and Cement Legs Leftover! So what if Redman goes 0-For in starts. Hey, he does not have a helluva lot to live up to. Know what I mean? His quickness (at least compared to JH and BL) makes him more suited to the anemic offense BP wants to implement. I, too, wanted to choke him after that killing interception! Maybe the kid will learn lollipop tosses are not acceptable at this level. Then again, Joey has NEVER absorbed that lesson. Oh well. Redman, Andersen and Norwood are the only Falcons still trying anyway. No, I do not want to hear about damn butterfingers Roddy White! GO BLUE!

Well all you people who thought Harrington was the answer should have checked his past. This loser resume shows that he has been a loser everywhere he has played. Then the loser had the nerves to sit on the sideline and have a attitude with the coaches who gave him more opportunities than any other QB in history. I think the biggest mistake Petrino has done all year is send Harrington on the field my memories of this SCRUB is after he makes one play in a game he runs around like he has just won the Superbowl. That is when I was convinced that he is a born loser. Harrington I believe the corporate world is your next stop. His wife must be so second guessing herself for marrying this loser.

Wow! Only 18 responses? Guess the bandwagon’s kinda empty now eh? Ah well, at least it’s refreshing to talk about actual footbal without any racists coming in here…

…anyway, I don’t think Redman is a long term solution. He still makes poor decisions (just look at what happened on that fourth down) but at this rate Petrino might as well see what he has in him.

Stendec, are you on crack? Roddy White is the only receiver who is playing his heart out week in and week out. 10 catches for 146 yards? A week after burning an Indy corner on a 40 yard post route? When’s the last time any Falcons receiver had over 1,000 yards receiving? 1999? Any QB that Petrino drafts next season he can rest assure he will have a go to target in White.

I agree with Josh, you can’t draft a QB in the first round unless you know for sure he’s a no brainer. I think this team shouldn’t get too cozy with Norwood either. He’s a good change of pace back, but not the guy I want to build my offense around. Petrino loves power backs, so I’m guess he’ll go for McFadden and use the offseason to get some offensive linemen in free agency.

A great running game can hide the weaknesses of any QB. Just ask Minnesota.

Let’s face it. The Falcons have far more problems than just the QB. They should take the best player available in the draft (likely McFadden) and start the rebuilding process. None of the current crop of college QBs looks likely to lead any team to the promise land and certainly none is worth a number 2 pick.

By Falcon4life

My wife says please play Redman; she’s tired of me screaming “Throw the freakin’ ball already Joey!!!” at the TV. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a QB as gun shy and afraid of making a mistake as Joey and Leftwich has a windup any old MLB pitcher would be proud of. Start Redman, it can’t get worse.

By King Of SinCity

December 6, 2007 12:47 PM | Link to this

OK I understand all of you guys’ frustration with the falcons, but it was doomed years ago when Dan Reeves decided to build the offense around Vick. That guaranteed that unless the QB has a quick release or he’s “fleet of foot” then no other QB was going to work.

Harrington is not, was not or will never be the answer, mainly because he will never have what he had in Oregon, which is 2 good RB’s, the best O’line in the PAC10 and Receivers to throw to.

Leftwich isn’t built for this offense, it moves too quickly. how many times has he been injured this season? He needs a team that has the ability to grind it out in the trenches so he can make plays Marshall did it and Jacksonville used to do it before they found out about Garrard.

So that leaves Redman, who has a great upside, the only thing that haunts me is that he lost his job to Tony Banks and then Kyle Boller, but may have the last laugh at the end of the season.

DJ Shockley would also be a way to go, As he’s pretty much Vick in Peyton Mannings body (i’m talking size wise) who lit it up in Auburn. give Redman the first shot. if it doesnt work out send in Shockley.

And about the draft pick…

There are really only a few teams that need a QB. The Falcons, Jets, Chiefs, Niners, Lions (eventually), Dolphins and Rams(for Security). 2 QB’s with tremendous potential (Derek Anderson and Kyle “new lease on life” Boller) will be available in the offseason, along with 6-7 QBs with potential in the draft. The Falcons, one way or another will be ok next year.

Don’t let me get started on my Niners however….

Everybody is talking QB in the next draft. Can you imagine what will happen to McFadden behind the Falcons OL (smaller than some high school lines, save Abraham)? If he starts in ‘08, not only will NFL vets welcome the rookie to the League with bone jarring hits, but the paper OL will make sure he puts in for his powerchair early on. OL OL OL must be high on the rebuild list. It must be clear that this franchise is 10 years from contention; meanwhile, real teams will be tweaking their talent pool with surgical drafting and free agent signing, pulling farther and farther away from the local pretenders who run the team and claim to be the ‘wizards’ of football.

The only true solution may be sale and relocation. New everything….

Time will tell all.. the dwindling faithful stand and watch…. it is they who will control this team’s destiny with the power of their dollars…

Vickbeliever, you’re the loser here. You don’t dare put your real name out there because you will get blasted out in public. Petrino is a joke right now. I’ve said this before, he is reaching for wins when he doesn’t need to. He needs to establish his system. Look at Jimmy Johnson. Before you all say “He had HOFs on that team.”, nobody knew how they would turn out. He was 1-15 his first season. But he stuck with the players for the whole season, kept the ones he wanted to stay, drafted for what he needed, then won 2 Super Bowls by the end of his fifth season with the team.

When you have a coach that switches QB’s around how is anyone suppose to get better….what Joey needs is to get picked up by a good owner, coach and players and he will be a decent QB his stats show it right now as far as QB ratings. Now Redmon will come in on Monday night and if he does not do well then you same people will bad mouth him so get ready Redmon it’s happen to everyone else.

I praaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy that we don’t draft a QB or an OL that high. I watch Tom Brady and Peyton and the honest thing is the QB has a lot more to do with the perception of a line than the casual fan can understand. Ryder I agree if we can have a dominant running game, Redman, Shockey or some hidden gem on another team’s roster could be our answer.

The Dan Marino’s and Peyton Mannings are the exception, young quarterbacks need to sit, carry luggage and attend meeting s before they are good. There are too many examples to cite.

I would love to get a guy who is on someone else’s roster like Carolina did with Delhomme.

Draft Glenn Dorsey or Highsmith, Harry Douglass from Louisville in the 4th and Dennis Dixon in the 3rd, and most importantly Brandon Coutu in the 5th!!!

Darryn, I think Petrino and Johnson were in different situations. Jimmy had nothing but young players so it wasn’t as if he had much choice. As for Petrino, he has a roster full of veterans and has to weed out those who aren’t going to fit in his system.

Keep in mind that he didn’t choose these players (sans Leftwich)outside of the draft. I think he has had some impact in how the WRs are playing (kiss Jenkins goodbye) and I believe that he will set up a system next year that will enable the team to be successful.

What he should do is go for the power running back in McFadden and then wait until the latter rounds to draft a QB if he still thinks someone is out there who fits his offense.

By Gary

December 6, 2007 3:08 PM | Link to this

The Falcons already have a feature back for the future with Norwood. McFadden is a great player but the Falcon’s have much greater needs in other areas. Unless they can use the draft pick in a trade for an immediate QB starter, I think they need to draft O line. Drafting a QB is also a mistake because none of those mentioned are ready to start as rookies. They’ll need time to develop and the Falcons need someone ready to play immediately. Much as I like Shockley, he didn’t show he was ready to start during preseason and he hasn’t been able to practice to get any better so I don’t understand why some fans think he is a shoe-in for the job. This team really has too many flaws to be corrected in one draft. They’ll have to be very active in the free agent market if they want to compete next year.

Okay folks, give Redman the chance to work for a paycheck like everybody else. He can’t do anyworse than Harrinton or Leftwich. We have a quarterback in DJ Shockley once he gets the reps and time at game speed. This offense was built for a QB like him and he is best suitable for the position.

Next, get an O-line that can block and pick a 2nd or 3rd round RB to help Norwood spread the defense. No offensive scheme will work with a weak running game. This will get the Falcons defense off the field and best position the offense to score points. Keep Roddie and L. Robinson and get rid of the rest of the receivers.

Keep in mind Vick haters, what we are seeing is a terrible team disguised by Vick’s talent. This team was bad a few years ago but Vick’s playmaking ability covered it up. No excuses for his off field decision but he definitely made the offense extremely better.

Sad but true; deal with it.

Peace!
