Joey’s up, Byron’s among the wounded

Joey Harrington’s back as the Falcons starting quarterback but there’s still a question as to whether he’s the guy coach Bobby Petrino really wants under center.

Harrington will start Thursday against visiting Indianapolis because Byron Leftwich suffered a tailbone injury in Sunday’s 31-7 waxing by Tampa Bay. Leftwich started that game but was pulled in the third quarter for Harrington after he was ineffective and the Falcons fell behind 24-0.

Petrino said he would start the player who gave Atlanta the best chance to win but Leftwich’s injury prompted an obvious reason to go to Harrington.

Petrino said before the New Orleans game and last week that when Leftwich is healthy, he’s the starter and Harrington is the backup. Petrino was non-committal today as to who the starter would be after the Thanksgiving game.

In other developments, defensive tackles Rod Coleman (triceps, hand) and Trey Lewis (knee) were placed on injured reserve, meaning they are done for the year. It’s a tough break for Coleman, who only played in five games because of operations on his right quadriceps and right knee. Lewis was playing better than most of the team’s draft picks and was doing a solid job of keeping blockers off middle linebacker Keith Brooking.

Montavious Stanley and Jonathan Babineaux will start at defensive tackle. Tim Anderson will be part of the rotation. Defensive end Chauncey Davis also will be moved inside at times.

Left tackle Todd Weiner (left knee) is out; TE Dwayne Blakley (concussion) is doubtful and WR Joe Horn (hamstring) is questionable.

Are you kidding me, Joey is starting again because LEADFOOT is hurt?

So what you’re saying is even if Joey beats Peyton Manning Thursday, Leadfoot will start next week if healthy.

PETRINO MUST BE PLAYING FOR THE DRAFT PICK, there is no other sain explanation for Leadfoot even being on the roster.

Either that or the curse is real and this franchise is doomed to mediocrity for eternity!

Wow. I know a lot of you don’t like Petrino, but this team wasn’t even supposed to be good with all our starters healthy. Now second and third stringers manning most of both lines? Yikes; it’d be hard for anyone to win like that.

what is the deal with Redmon? Is he drawing a paycheck? Can he be any worse than the two that have been out there? I say give him a go. Let him earn at least one check. This season is a wash and Joey and Big head are gone for next year, so why not give the #3 guy a shot? Hell, maybe the guy who hands out towels on the side line played qb in 8th grade, give him a shot, could it get any worse? And why is Norwood sitting and Dunn attempting to play? Dunn in done, his career is over , he can no longer get the job done. Give the kid his chance.

this whole thing reminds me of that old joke: “First prize, 1 week in Philadelphia! Second prize, 2 weeks in Philadelphia.”

To “win” this quarterback position is to lose any chance of digesting dinner on Thursday…potential huge embarassment factor….hostile crowd (well, I’m hostile)….national coverage on the NFL network….oy….

Okay, reminded of another old joke….the one about the guy who had his car broken into….and what did the burgler do? He broke in and left two Falcons/Colts tickets on the front seat.

I hear talking heads commenting on how head-scratching the decisions concerning the use of Harrington and leftwich. I think it is easy to understand. Three things: (1) the reality is that despite how terrible the NFC South is and up until last weekend, how it was there for the taking- the Falcons DO NOT have what it takes, talent-wise, injury-wise, and mental state-wise to win the division. It AIN”t happening. (2) The Falcons know that Joey is not the long term answer at QB- he is a back-up and does not have the necessary skills to run Petrino’s offense (lack of arm strength) and they are committed to Petrino for at least 3 years- they HAVE to be, and (3)They need to determine whether they can depend on Byron(he does have the skills), so it is necessary to find this out. For this will determine the direction for a QB next year-whether to draft, seek a free agent or trade(good luck-good QB’s do not become available)or what to do in that position. So, they are seeing- with Byron, it is a combination of good arm strength, good decision making, but holds onto ball too long, slow delivery and injury-prone. They are now aware his liabilities. This season died with an indictment back in the spring. It is time to decide the direction for its resurrection and that begins with the right QB. So, I say spend time this year trying to figure it out and let’s get it right.

I do not know much about football comparingto you all,but I watch the falcon’s all the time since I moved to GA about 11 years ago,and I never so much confusion in any team before as i saw it in the falcons.I realy do not understand how in the world would somebody change the QB after 2 straight wins, what away of encouragement To Joey harrington after he has put all the effort and his spirit to the game against the panters, and you Mr Bobby Petrino with all respect you ought to tell Mr president arthur Blank and also GM to stay out of your business if they are involved in switchting the QB of the last game.Mr leftwish was not able to walk muchless to play football not,and if he looked like that on the game, how did look in in the practices, the days before the game. And the final thing I want to say can the QB be judged not able when a simple catch the receivers couldnot catch, about the O-L that couldnot block.I had a son that his coach put him as blocker and he was so small and so skiny and everybody else is bigger than him,and often hear coaches saying Iwish the rest of o-linemen has the same spirit.WE need players with heart.Joey is not the problem, the problem is with the big shot that rule the team and do not know a thing about the game. MR ARTHUR BLANK,Let the coaches do their job,the game is not about the black people, the white people, and if Vick never got on trouble and he still here, and the attitude is not good,no heart for the game,Iwill not put him in.It is not about the blacks(I am ful-blooded african),nor It is about the white,It is about the best man in the field, not just able to lay, also with good character. One of my coaches use to say,my best 11 horses will play in the game,so go and do what you have to do to be better player, and start with your attitude.

Leftwich’s tailbone bruised, my foot! It’s Petrino’s ego that’s bruised and his backbone that’s missing. It wouldn’t be macho or coachlike to just say, Oops its obvious I blew that decision! Or Arthur blew it, whichever one put Leftwich out on the field last week. Posters keep saying “Leftwich has the skills.” Well, I’ve got money. But unfortunately I’ve also got bills which equal my money in hand. Can’t anyone see that regardless of what skills Leftwich may or may not have, that his liabilities cancel those skills out… in fact looks like they far outweigh the skills. And as to Leftwich’s toughness??? Puhleasseeee….

Wyche you are without question now a J.A. sports reporter. Anyone with half a brain can see what’s going on here. Byron is malingering because he’s afraid of going up against the Colts and looking bad again. Patrino knows that and wants to protect him, so he puts Harrington in as QB to really protect himself from more criticism. If Joey has a bad game and the Falcons probably will cause that to happen, Patrino will blame Harrington and think he is off the hook for his stupid QB decisions.
