Nothing went right for Falcons
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Things couldn’t have been worse for the Falcons Sunday. Let’s count the ways:
They got crushed by Tampa Bay.
They failed to get back in the NFC South playoff race.
They switched quarterbacks — again. After Byron Leftwich was harrassed all day and ineffective, Joey Harrington returned. Who knows who will play against Indianapolis on Thursday.
Warrick Dunn, who needed just 58 yards to surpass the 10,000 career yards mark, didn’t come close.
One other thing is certain. Any momentum that two straight wins built, is gone.

Well, we won two in a row, and that was just not good enough for the offensive genius brought in by Mr. Blank. What does Petrino have against winning? Against Crumpler? Against Harrington? AGAINST ATLANTA?????
Why in the world did he start Leftwich? Harrington won TWO — REPEAT TWO — games in a row. Nothing against Leftwich personally, but we saw one more flub a dub presentation today!! For Pete’s sake — highschool JV teams can do better.
Honestly, think that Petrino is out of his league. Bet this will be the last game televised on Sundays! Doubt if they will have a sell out for at least a year.

it is obvious that this fool Petrino has no clue. You do not bench a guy who has helped you win your last 2 games and has been getting beaten up all year. A classless, gutless act. You refuse to use your fastest player on offense, Norwood. Idiotic. Terrible personel decisions with him and Mckay. And Blank is the most responsible. They all should apologize to The fans that spent their money and time to go down there to watch that garbage. Admit you screwed up and fire Petrino and Mckay and start over. Better yet, take them to LA and punish them.

Hope the Byron fans are happy!! that includes the AJC writers like Bradley and Schultz who dissed Joey Harrington before pre-season, then lobbied hard for the Big Arm of Leftwich. Wow you guys really know your football huh??
Two fumbles, Two picks, Three sacks. Harrington should have told Bobby to stick it when finally called to mop-up Byron’s mess in the 4th quarter. Petrino made a real stupid move back in the Tennessee game, they are the #1 Defense in the NFL, so what, you dont bench your starting QB. Joey has played tough behing a lousy O-Line and Coach treated him like crap.
Bobby and Byron are BOTH outta here for 2008 - I cant wait to see Petrino all red-faced in the Interview. What an absolute idiot. Arthur Blank had better beg Joey Harrington to stick around otherwise this team will have NO quarterback next year.

One of the worst played, worst coached games ever. Even for the miserable Falcons, this was pathetic. I feel sorry for Bobby Petrino. He is in so far over his head that it isn’t even funny. I feel worse for the season ticket holders and anybody who actually paid money to watch these clowns. For starters, Leftwich should NEVER have started this game - he obviously was not ready to play. He is a statue back there and takes forever to get rid of the ball. Just a matter of time before he is injured and out for the year. Even after a horrible first half, the birds are only down 14-0. Then comes two of the worst calls by the head coach ever. Early third quarter and they go on fourth down. Why? They hadn’t done anything all day, then try to go for it. Then came the actual play call, which was stupid even for Atlanta. A pitch to Dunn who as usual was hit behind the line and the game was over. Then the defense gave up and that was it. I hate to see what happens Thursday, but it probably won’t be on TV anyway so I won’t throw up my turkey! I have no advice for this team - they are absolutely horrible.

Why is Petrino so high on Leftwich and so down on Joey? Leftwich threw 2 picks, no TDs, and fumbled twice, one of which was returned for a TD.
Joey comes in and goes 16 for 20, 139 yards, no picks or fumbles, and throws a TD pass to cap off a 96 yard drive (including a 33-yard pass to Laurent Robinson on 3rd and 7). Joey led the team to 2 straight wins before today, including a road win.
I can’t understand why Petrino thinks a seriously banged up, immobile Leftwich is the better option.

Ok, if a 48 year old woman with little nfl experience can see that LEFTWICH 1. has no talent 2. appears to be half awake 3. acts like he does not want to be in the game 4. throws everything as hard as he can at the ground 5. can’t move I ask you why can’t the coach see this?????? Please explain this to me. This was THE game that counted and he decides that is the time to take a stand and put in his “man”. I am not sure if we should be mad at LEFTWICH or Petrino but it was the worst performance I have seen by a quarterback this year. Did they drop some balls? yes. Were the balls catchable? most not really. IF you are a season ticket holder, you need to demand your money back bc he has given up the season and is not trying to win. Joey, thanks for making this not a shutout.

Coach Petrino doesn’t have a clue. Anyone in their right mind knows that Joey should have started that game today. 14 points off Leftwich turnovers. He did not even attempt to get out of the pocket. Oh yeah he has a great arm. An arm that throws either too high or too low. Our momentum for the season is probably lost and our remaining home games (with the exception of Thursday) will probably be blacked out. I don’t blame us fans. We need to send a message to Arthur Blank that some changes need to be made immediately!!! From Rich McKay on down. With that being said I do commend the players that gave it their all today.

Petrino has to be the worst coach in the league when it comes to managing players, (lack of use of Norwood, killing team chemistry by using Leftwich vs Harrington) and calling plays (pitching out on fourth and inches). If I had any confidence at all that he knew the time of day (and I didn’t), I certainly wouldn’t have any now.

Yikes - Petrino yanks Joey after 2 straight wins and lets the media know before Joey. Leftwich is horrific and shows why J’Ville cut him and no one except the Falcons would pick him up.
This is downright depressing. Only thing worse than the Falcons is the performance of Home Depot stock - so maybe Arthur Blank can take solace in the fact he sold Home Depot stock at a much higher price to buy the Falcons!

Coach Petrino may some smart guy for all anyone knows, but seems totally clueless when it comes to understanding momentum and development of the struggling player/fan base. They won two games with Harrington but before the players or fans could begin getting behind this current team this non-communicative and momentum killer coach creates more malice…with a resident journeyman in Leftwich…”Hey Coach, Why do you think Jacksonville CUT HIM you idiot!” Understand this…you are losing your FAN BASE (money), and the advertising (money) and any interest in anyone even watching this team on TV or at Home Dome (money). “HeY Bobbie” You stupid or what Man? You want respect? Try respecting your players and the guy who won you the only games yet…before you dump on everybody. Petrino, you are the worst coach on the planet if you don’t even understand how to develop relationships…guess you’d have to a personality or some understanding of something other than X’s & O’s. Why don’t you just quit and save this town more embarrasment.

If Petrino had not lost his team yet, I believe he did so today. That 4th and 1 call to run outside against a bear front that already has the ends outside of the tackles/tight-ends was ridiculous. Not that Joey’s been the Falcon’s savior by a long shot this year, but it appeared to my eyes from the very first game onward like he was working toward something with this team, and getting better at it. Whether the team’s last two victories are proof of that I can’t say, but my gut also told me from the very first game that Leftwich played that he was a schmuck, who just didn’t have any gut insticts. While it may not have been fair to judge Byron first time out, I feel like my instincts have been right on after seeing him today.
My biggest problem with all of this is Petrino. His total lack of support and, more importantly, his total lack of respect for Harrington throughout this season is more of a morale sinker than the play of the team itself. I don’t see how this team can rise up from this season with such a man at the helm. Perhaps he is used to treating his college players like kids, or maybe he just has a leadership complex that makes him act like a horses patoot. But considering how everything has played out to this point, it’s hard not to root for a guy (who may have limited abilities)who’s playing his heart out with no support, rather than a team that’s split into a million pieces on the field, run by a guy who can’t evaluate the pieces that are right in front of him base on their performance — not their rep. Hate to say it as I love Warrick, but that includes the coach’s use of him and Norwood as well.

Why switch Quarterbacks when Harrington was on a 2 game winning streak. When playing any game/sport, you should never make a change when you are on a winning streak.
Bottom line, this was just poor choices on the coaching front.
Teams need to have faith in their coaching. J Harrington played 1 quarter and his numbers were better than Leftwich. Players lead by example. Right now, there is no good example of leadership within the Falcon’s organization. Until that changes, you will never see a championship NFL team in Atlanta.
Plus, the fans need to stand behind their team through thick and thin. Falcons fans only show up when the team wins (or if the media places so much attention to a person that does not really deserve any attention what-so-ever…Vick). DO you think Steelers fans, Packers fans, and Bear fans do this. No! The fans here just need to grow up and get into the game. Hint, players play better when the fans are supportive.
Hopefully things change, but you never know. If all the players had a good heart, it might be different. The only role model I see within the Falcons right now is Warrick Dunn. Great guy and he gives back to the community. If you can’t cheer for the team, at least cheer for the players that try and accomplish something off the field.

Petrino is a joke as coach…understanding X’s and O’s is only part of the job. The main part is understanding people and what motivates both from a working relationship and respected loyalty. One thing is certain - even with Tom Brady at QB this offense would stink. The defense held out as long as it could but eventually the turnovers were too much. It was an offensive debacle with significant breakdowns in every area. Neither the offensive players or coaches looked ready for this game. It was simply unwatchable.

Petrino has demonstrated, in just one week, that he is yet another college coach destined to fail.
A) He pulled a quarterback who had led his team to two straight victories. B) He failed to communicate this with his QB. C)His replacement, three weeks off of surgery and still learning the offense, was horrific.
Thusfar, his motivational skills and decision making have been shown as weak, at best.
This team, it appears, needs new leadership even more than a quarterback.

This team is absolutely horrible. Someone must be fired. The only reasonable person to go is Rich McKay. He’s responsible for the talent on the field, or (in the case of the Falcons) the lack of it. We have only a handful of players that are worth keeping. That speaks volumes about how McKay has done his job. He hasn’t. He must be sent packing along with a large number of our players. Petrino may leave of his own accord as he begins to realize the fiasco that is this franchise. He could do his career irreparable harm by staying here. Name a former Falcons head coach that’s gone on to success anywhere else?

I just don’t understand; the teams best shot at winning was with a completely healthy Joey Harrington, but lockerroom politics rule the team?
As a Duck fan I have seen what Joey Harrington can do to lead a team, but the team has to comite and support that QB. I know the team went through a shock before the season starts, but as paid professionals these players should have already recovered and turned it around. Maybe the Coaches should really work on winning games and not satisifying lockerroom politics. If Players aren’t going to step up and play for Joey, maybe the coaches should start calling them out.
Its too bad, because winning a division and getting to the playoffs after all that has been said and done would have healed quite a few wounds. Its poor team management if lockerroom politics run a team and players efforts.

I am a long-suffering Falcons fan who now lives in another city. I have not been following the news this week and was astonished to find out that Petrino had named Byron Leftwich as starter. If Joey Harrington had not earned his position with his play in the last two weeks (both wins), then nobody’s job is safe.
Leftwich came out looking as if he hadn’t played in ages and that silly passing motion of his - I don’t know how he completes a pass.
Let’s hope that Petrino is gone by the end of the year. His sour demeanor can’t be pleasant to his players.

ive never seen such a poorly coached game. bobby petrino needs to go back to the college ranks. i dont think he understood how important this game was, especially with the panthers and saints losing!! we had a chance to build on the momentum from two wins (thanks to j. harrington), and actually become playoff contenders. instead, the fans saw what kind of team we really are, which is mediocre, poorly coached, talentless team (thanks to r. mckay)!!

This is a good thing as it will end any delusions of playoff hopes for this year. For the rest of this season we need to work on player development and team building, and ultimately gather data to determine next year’s roster. Trade D. Hall for a 1st rounder? Possibly- then you could possibly grab Jake Long and a qb in the first. Bring back Byron or Joey? Dunn? Can Norwood really carry the load? How good is Nicholas- good enough to replace Demorrio? What to do with MLB and, for that matter, Brooking? Should we pay Milloy for another season? These are things we won’t know if we only play the vets in pursuit of a division title that would only be possible because our division blows. The injuries to Gandy and Weiner are something of a blessing since we now get to test the competence of some young OL. Here’s hoping Coach Petrino follows suit at other positions by choice rather than necessity.

I just got back from the game and all I can say is that was awful. Why would you put in Leftwich when Joey had a good thing going? After the 2nd interception Byron threw, Petrino should have made the switch. Noone can complain about Joey not pulling the trigger quickly enough, the coaching staff is just as slow in making a decision. Everything about the game from the mikes not working, to the boring music that is played to “hype” the fans to the lazy and out of sync cheerleaders makes me want to ask for a refund for my tickets. The Falcons organization does absolutely nothing to put on a show for their fans and make the $84.00 seats we have worth the money. Sad that in such a great city like Atlanta, this is what we have to cheer on for our football team.

Bobby Petrino made a huge mistake putting Byron Leftwich in, Joey came in and drove down the field to a touchdown. Joey was the one to bring us to that two game winning streak and might have been able to extend it. Petrino should have stuck to what works. Of course, the 11 penalties for 110 yards, or the two turnovers didnt help much either. It was just a bad day overall for the Falcons.

Suddenly the receivers can’t catch a ball, Leftwich is putting the ball all over God’s green earth or artifical turf. Losing to that thin lipped twirp Gruden is almost as bad as losing to Spurrier. When will Arthur Blank and the Vick Haters realized that this franchise is nothing without Michael Vick at the helm. Now, is the time for ownership to step up to the plate and say that we are behind Michael Vick our franchise player. If ownership does not allow Vick to return to this team then the Falcons won’t make the playoffs for the next 20 years. In addtion, I think that at the end of the year Petrino will walk away fom this organization. Who said Vick wasn’t the team, yeah right, the dome cannot even sellout without the help from corporate sponsors because I know that if something drastic is not done by the end of the year I will not be renewing my six seasons tickets which I have held for the past 10 years.

Where are all those Byron supporters who were piling it on this board earlier in the week? Byron “can throw the long ball” we heard. Byron “can rally the team behind him”. Byron “is a better long-term solution”. Byron this, Byron that. Was Tampa Bay running the board that day?
Joey Harrington could have just given up today, but he still rallied this team to one score at least.
Petrino: 1) Cannot realize the better QB 2) Let’s a multi-million dollar fullback collect dust 3) Keep’s trying to run Dunn on the inside 4) Has let Norwood barely touch the ball this year except kickoffs 5) Continues to think Jennings is somehow going to figure out what “return” means 6) Doesn’t think an All-Pro Tight End is anything important 7) Has had more player controversies even after the Vick episode than I can count on my fingers 8) Would still need 2 years to develop any QB we draft next year 9) Waited until after the season started to realize the team needed a real kicker
BTW, do games like this really make you wonder if McKay was sent to us by TB as a long-term sabotage?

Believe it or not, I really don’t blame Leftwich. That being said, he never should have been starting this game.
Against a good defense, just coming off of ANOTHER ankle proceedure. The guy was never exactly mobile before the injury, and Petrino expected him to be mobile at all? A good coach can alter his game plan to support the talent he has got. Harrington can only throw short routes? Can he do it reliably? He has a line that can’t hold up for long? Well for the luvagod design an offense to work with that, use it to eat some clock, and allow your D to help you win by keeping them off as long as you can!!
Playing Leftwich so you can plug in your vaunted offensive genius, and them allowing him to get bludgeoned to death while your plays unfold is idiodicy!

Hindsight is really something, huh? Half you guys were saying before the game “Did you see how the team was fired up the last time when Leftwich came in? Now we can throw downfield and open it up!” Bobby knows the season is toast; he’s putting important players in key situations to see whether they should be here next year or not. Now we know Joey is the one of the two to keep as a backup. We also know Jennings is a mediocre punt returner and will be adressed in the off season. We also know that for this scheme we REALLY need a power back. Really, folks, the personell (especially with two backup tackles on the o-line) are not adequate for the scheme. Give the man time and another draft or two to get this team ready. Gaines Adams against Quinn Ojinaka? Of COURSE a slow QB is gonna get sacked. That isn’t Petrino’s fault; it’s Vick’s and Mora’s.

First of all, I watched this game and was really saddened at the state of the execution of whatever game plan there might have been. Whether most of us realize it or not, our defense is actually pretty good. When another teams offense is continually given the ball in great field position, they are going to wear down the defense and eventually dominate the game. Our defense has played with great intensity and heart, notwithstanding the occasional “dufus” play by “Me-angelo”.
the real problem with this team is the personel decisions on offense. If you give me two years of free agency and a draft, I will pay premium dollar for the best offensive linemen I can get me hands on. then I will show you that there really isn’t much difference between the quarterbacks or recievers in this league. Tony Romo looks like the next John Elway because he has time to throw the ball and his recievers have time to get open. The same goes for Tom brady, Peyton Manning, Bret Favre and any other qb who is tearing up the league. take note that Romo was undrafted, Brady in the 6th round and Favre was on nobody’s radar, even the Falcons (unbelievably). The key issue is the teams that dominate in the trenches win. That’s why Pittsburgh competes year in and year out even when they watch their high priced skill players go to other teams. Skill players are a dime a dozen, but great offensive and defensive linemen are hard to find and that is where the biggest investment should be made. I noticed watching the Dallas game that their offensive linemen for Dallas are huge and Romo has all day to throw the ball. Then when they want to run the ball, they just push the other team back and bam, you have three to four yards with a decent running back.
The main mistake the Falcons made was when they decided to go with an offensive scheme that called to small offensive linemen that were designed to pass protect for a quick throw West-coast offense. Now our linemen are meing asked to protect for several seconds, which they are just not physically equipped to do. If you notice when we are successful, it’s the short quick throws that allow us to move the ball down the field. that’s what our line is equipped to do. McKay and Petrino need time to build a legitimate offensive line, then we will be fine.
Relax folks, we knew this was going to take some time.

You can be part of killing a human like OJ or Ray but, when you kill pets it makes people mad! MV ruined the Falcons for years to come. Look at the Boston Celtics they draft the kid # 1 Len Bias. He OD’s before he ever plays a game and they haven’t recovered yet. The Falcons may take 10 years to recover from what MV did. It aint the coach ….. its the guy who is heading to prison. Admit it.

All you ‘Bring Back Vick’ fans need to be caught in the middle of two charging teams of fighting dogs. There is a time for decency in this world and Vick is not it. I remember last year when Mr. Vick took himself out of the game when things weren’t going well.
Don’t you remember this same bunch of receivers could not catch the ball when it was zipped at their shoe tops. Vick was no quarterback. He was an overpaid halfback trying to play QB. A passing rating of .35 will just not get it in the NFL.
They need a coach like Norm Van Brocklin who had the guts to put bums on waivers including Mr. Petrino. Where, oh where ar you Dan Reeves?

Well Petrino rolled the Dice and came up Craps, how many time does it have to be said “you don’t mess with the streak MEAT!” jesus, we know Joey is not Brady or Manning, hell he may not even be Jon Kitna, but he has improved and he has won the previous 2 games Something tells me Blank may get more involved in the roster otherwise he may be looking at a high bill next year and lots of emty seats

I am a 30-year old die hard female football fan and I could coach the Falcons way better than Petrino. As much as I hate to admit it, Harrington should have started, instead Petrino starts Byron just to draw in the M. Vick fans. If A. Blank doesn’t get a clue & I mean fast, he is going to see his investment go right down the drain. He needs to fire R. McKay, fire B. Petrino, and hire a NFL established coach. What in the world was he thinking by letting R. McKay think that B. Petrino would be a great fit for the NFL. M. Vick, made a mistake, bring him back, support your franchise player and build around him. The whole team is exposed. Hire another GM, Coach and get a better O-line. Dunn will get his yards and go out on top but it’s Norwood time to shine. Vick (QB), Norwood (RB), time to get some receivers who don’t have on-again, off-again sticky fingers, keep Alge, get rid of D. Hall (he get’s burnt all the time), man there’s just too much going on. Hey Blank, call me, I can help! Go Steelers! 7-3

THANK GOODNESS that never materialized! There you go, that’s the GOOD news ATL fans. Now what to do with 4 tickets to TG day game?

Petrino is gone to LSU after this year. He left UL with no defense to speak off and he will the Falcons in a worse mess.
McKay will be the scape goat and be fired. He will then take the Dolphins GM position, and take them to the playoffs in two years. He will let Cam draft the offensive players.
Mr Blank, please sell this team.

It’s Petrino’s fault. He neglected the momentum of two wins in a row with Harrington as the starting QB, made the decision to start Leftwich and virtually shot himself, the team, the organization and the fans in the proverbial foot. Yep… IT’S PETRINO’S FAULT.

PS… I’m going to get ROASTED at work tomorrow because I had the audacity to say the Falcons would beat Tampa and be in the hunt for the NFC South title. Oh yeah I’m sure I’ll get the business ALL DAY over this one… AND IT’S ALL BOBBY PETRINO’S FAULT. Toss sweep on 4th and short??? What an idiot!

As bad as the Falcons are, never ever think of bringing Vick back! He sux! And the Falcons did too WITH Vick! This is not about Vick. This is about a bunch of poops—on the field and off. Pathetic! I love Harrington! He is one of just a couple of bright spots on this team. He has heart, but not many of the other players do. Fire up the blow torch and clean da house!!!!!

Really… R E A L L Y??? Are there S T I L L ig-nunt people with computer skills (even if they lack grammatical acumen) who log on and claim that Vick’s the best thing that happened to this franchise and that we, and our franchise, should “suppport” that dog-killing C R I M I N A L and just await his glorious comeback?
Get a clue, people. Your “hero” ain’t coming back, and for the record, he’s the W O R S T thing that happened to this franchise, just ahead of Eugene Robinson and his late-night pre-Super Bowl itch to get a job “done” so to speak.
Your golden boy has set this franchise back five years, minimum.
Best thing my @$$. Do us all a favor and stop wearing those blinders that somehow prohibit you from seeing that MV7 broke the law, was killing innocent animals, and lied about it until he got caught. Where’s the honor in admitting you’re wrong and that your “hero” was nothing short of a disappointment to you and his team, coaches and fans?
Shut up with the notions of his comeback. It won’t happen, and I thank God for it.
Oh, and fire Petrino, start Joey and go back to the blocking scheme our smallish o-line excelled at in past seasons. Sheesh. Not rocket science.

I know ugly and this game was ugly. However, as a Falcon fan, I’m used to ugly.
Got my hopes built alittle when MV7 came along. But, heck, he got it, too. The last two seasons he was with us, he carried ugly to new heights with second half collapses.
Ugly! And, the play-calling was the ugliest I’ve seen in some time. Mr. Blank should hold a contest and give the weekly winner the opportunity to be offensive coordinator for the week.
And, Leftwich couldn’t hit the side of a barn. He was ugly and Dunn couldn’t run. Man, that was ugly
Yes sir. It was ugly and with the Colts coming up, well, I guess the ugliest is yet to be.
Dang!

This goes out to Falconfan, Vick17, and all you other idiots out there that spammed the Bay area boards with your Falcons crap last year. As for the rest of you in Atlanta who have some class…don’t get too down on Petrino. Mora always wanted to be “one of the guys” and as a result the players didn’t respect him. Petrino’s trying to instill some discipline but it takes time.

To Coach Patrino,
Can you look straight into the camera and tell us in a convincing manner that you beleive in winning?
I don’t know what in the world that you see of Leftwich that make you say he is your man. But if you are committed to winning the game, you could have put Joey in there by end of Q1 and the result might have been better - - at least nto as ugly as it was.
Don’t know why in the #$%@ hell I went to the game, paying a total of $300+ (parking, ticket, food/drinks) for this.

You are now in the twilight zone.
This blog is actually a duplicate from 10 years ago.
The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
Wait til next year.
Haven’t we heard that before and you are a fool or rich and stupid if you ever buy another ticket to see this franchise hit the field.

The Falcon’s ills all came to the surface today. You pay a blocking fullback millions and then don’t use him on a 4th and inches. Mr. Blank is obviously a very successful business man but maybe a bit reluctant to admit his mistakes, such as firing Dan Reeves, hiring a Jim Mora and a Bobby Petrino(who seems to be in over his head),hitching the team’s success to one man(who, unquestionably is a great athlete, but a very average QB),then overpaying him and coddling him ever since, and then creating a QB controversy by bringing in another QB during the season who has a strong arm but a fragile and immobile body. I don’t understand how you bench a QB who is on a winning streak. Harrington reads defenses, throws short but accurate passes, and has a lot of heart. Joey for this year and draft Ryan of BC for the future.. As a 40+ yr. fan,I’ve seen it all.

Petrino lost the entire city of Atlanta alongside affecting the game mentality of the team with his stubborn and unwise decision to undo whatever little chemistry the team had going into this game. Putting Leftwich in today was a very poor decision indeed! Don’t have much faith left in Petrino’s decisions.
