Could Leftwich start against Bucs?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Starting quarterback Byron Leftwich in place of Joey Harrington was almost a no-brainer three weeks ago after the Falcons fell to 1-5. What about putting him back in the starting lineup now that Atlanta has won two straight with Harrington at quarterback and sits just two games behind NFC South-leading Tampa Bay, which comes to town Sunday?
Could happen.
Coach Bobby Petrino was non-committal Monday about a possible quarterback change once Leftwich is medically cleared following ankle surgery two weeks ago. Petrino said no decision would be made until Leftwich proves he is physically able to play but the fact that he’s even contemplating Leftwich’s role after two straight wins means there is a chance a change could be made.
Before the winning streak, there was little doubt that Leftwich would be re-inserted once he was able. Leftwich’s arm strength allowed Petrino to call more downfield passes, which, in turn opened up running lanes because linebackers and safeties could crowd the line of scrimmage.
However, the Falcons actually have momentum. Harrington also proved to teammates that he is pretty darn tough. He took some jarring hits vs. Carolina and kept getting up and making plays that needed to be made.
In other developments, there were no medical updates for WR Joe Horn (hamstring) or RB Jerious Norwood (ankle). Petrino said he did not have a full diagnosis but the initial report on rookie tight end Martrez Milner was that his suffered a high left ankle sprain against Carolina.
Also, there are some tickets available to the game vs. Tampa Bay, meaning, if there are unsold seats by 1 p.m. Thursday, the game could be blacked out on local television. That would mark two consecutive home blackouts.

Don’t like to play the “what if” game, but if the Falcons had a real kicker at the beginning of the season and D. Hall could keep his mouth shut then the game this weekend would be for first place.

Total BS if Bryron is the starter. Joey has earned the right to start and he should be givin the chance. Now thats not to say if he faulters and we need Byron to come in and win the game. A win is the most important factor.

I am all for replacing noodle arm as the 2 wins are due to good defense, the offense can’t stretch the field and that causes the stalls and FGs.

The Falcons have won two in a row - albeit against weak opponents. Harrington has been adequate and I don’t think a chnage now is either warranted or smart. If you’re winning, don’t rock the boat, especially at qb.

I like Petrino but if he inserts Leftwich he is a IDIOT!!! Leftwich has proven in the past that he can’t stay healthy and to put him in when Joey has proven he can be a leader would be insane! Joey with the exception of the Giants game has given this team golden opportunities to win every game! There has been a lot of negativity shown to Joey from day one and I think its time the coaching staff and all of us fans give this guy the respect he deserves! GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Leftwich is ready he should play. Harringtons arm is too weak and he throw’s the ball into the flats about 20 times a game. He just cant make the throws….. They won the last 2 games because of the D. Not Harrington.

Joey took the blows without a doubt. But, none of his passes were over 10 - 12 yards. The Falcons must throw deep to open up the middle for Alge and the run game. Leftwich can throw deep. He has to be made the starter if he is ready with Joey ready to come in if Byron can’t get the job done. I think Byron can and will.

Petrino would be crazy to start Leftwich after the momentum of the last two games! Keep Harrington as the starter! He’s one tough cookie, having proved himself through much adversity.
Come on Atlanta, come out to the Dome and support the Falcons, and avoid another embarassing blackout!

If he’s healthy, start him. We need to stretch the field against the Bucs.

Everyone from the Falcons are begging fans to come to the Stadium. What do you have to offer the fans, Discounted tickets? I doubt it

The best the Falcons offense has looked all year was the fist half of the Saints game. I say play Lefty if he can.
He is no answer…you could run to the john during his delivery and he cant take the punishment to stay healthy. But we could ride him out for a while, kind of like Bobby Hebert.
This TEAM was supposed to be good enough make a run. Thats why Mora was fired. So we lose the QB and add in a few boners by McKay (who’s idea was the last minute kicker experiment?) Leftwich cant be that much worse than Vick…Joey is.

First off…”fan”…don’t kid yourself, you’re not one. Go back to were you came from. Secondly, Joey has proven himself to be tuff but opening up the field could help our run game. I say, keep Joey in and if things don’t go right, try Leftwich.
Stop the blackouts! True Falcon’s fans need to support our team!

Harrington deserves to play until he is hurt or starts to really play poorly again. He really sucked it up Sunday and hung in there. Another week of “rest” probably wouldn’t hurt Leftwich, either.

We all know if Leftwich is even 50% he will be starting. If the birds had lost against Carolina, all we would be talking about is how bad Harrington is and the million (or so it seems) false start penalties the offense had in that game. At best Leftwich is an insurance policy to get us through the season-i would like to see who the birds are drooling over for qb next year or will we have the same stuff again.

I would go with Leftwitch. He wins a lot more than Joey and is a much better QB. I think he can really help the Falcons win now. We are winning with D. BL is better, end of story.

People. As u know, season ticket holder since Arthur, this is not that bad a situation. Look at the previous Mora Jr. regime. Started fast faded late right. This is just the opposite with Bobbby and frankly I like the way it looks. If not for a few stupid incidents, we’d be looking good. Okay the Giants exposed us but we are not the same team. The players are starting to believe and want to play for Petrino. Let’s let the chips fall while searching for a General Manager.

Harrington is not a “noodle-arm”…look at tape from the Fiesta Bowl and the perfect in stride strikes to recievers over halfway down the field. Give the man time and open up the offense and he will deliver. He proved his toughness with the hits he took Sunday, especially the throw he made to Crumpler knowing the hit was coming…stick with him.

Life ain’t fair, is it? Throw Harrington into the aftermath of the Vick circus, let him get beat up like a punching bag as the offensive line re-learns how to protect a pocket passer, let a bad-mouthin’ idiot take the best game he’s played in ages away from him, then after he’s at the helm for two wins, after he sacrifices his body to make the big plays, yank him. Wow, that’s a great way to build team spirit and momentum.
A team with any class leaves Harrington in until he proves he’s not up to the job. Give the guy a *&&$&% chance — he’s given the Falcon’s one.

Please, My Brother…let it go…Mike is not comin’ back to the Falcons. First of all, he ain’t even started doin’ his time yet. And then, don’t think that Goodell is gonna let him come waltzin’ back in. Mike LIED to Goodell, remember? I’m sure that he does. I suggest, My Confused Young Brother, that you, instead, invest your energy in finding another hero to worship because you apparently are not a fan of The Atlanta Falcons…sounds more like you are a fan of goose bumps.

The Falcons should start Harrington. Preserve the momentum, but if he goes stagnant on several series, as he’s been known to do, bring in Leftwich. Plain and simple.

Start Leftwich, Harrington was a joke in Detroit/Miami and here. The season is over start planning on a new QB for next year. To Mr. Blank if this is what season ticketholders have to look forward for I’ll give up my seat like more season ticket holders
