Boley headed toward free agency?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Falcons outside linebacker Michael Boley, who leads the team with 90 tackles and is an emerging star, will be a restricted free agent this spring unless he reaches a contract extension with the team before then. So far, no talks have taken place in that regard, according to his agent, Zeke Sandhu.
That’s not to say the team won’t try to lock up the former fifth-round pick before season’s end but Sandhu said he’s been given no indication from the team that contract talks are on the horizon.
Since Boley is only a third-year player, the Falcons have the ability to place a one-year tender on him that would require any team that signed him to an offer sheet to offer compensation if Atlanta opts to not match the deal. The Falcons did as much with Matt Schaub (before trading him to Houston) and outside linebacker Demorrio Williams last season. No team signed Williams and he signed a one-year, $1.3 million deal with Atlanta.
Williams will become an unrestricted free agent this spring unless the Falcons offer a contract extension, which they might not because they like rookie OLB Stephen Nicholas and MLB Keith Brooking could be moved back outside next season.
In terms of Boley, he seems to fit the criteria of the type of player Atlanta wants to have for it’s foreseeable future. He’s a solid citizen and an ascending talent who’s already approaching Pro Bowl caliber.
Starting free safety Chris Crocker also will be an unrestricted free agent after the season. He said he would like to return, but the Falcons have not approached his agent about an extension.

Does any body really care if any of them are back next year??? The present Falcon players are a dysfunctional family. If they stay—they stay. If they go—they go. Who cares?

Yeah, losing their best young player would be right on par with the McKay Era. Then maybe we can sign or draft some felon from Virginia Tech…

I may be the only person in the world who doesn’t quite understand all the hype about Boley this year, but I would say he’s been above average. Period. That’s great for the Falcons, who have above average players at fewer positions than you can count on one hand. But Pro Bowl? You’ve got to be kidding. A Pro Bowl-type linebacker is somelike the Steelers’ James Harrison. Boley is 2-3 years away from that, if ever.

“solid citizen” you must be kidding, a pro athlete? I like Boley and based on what I have read about him he probably is a solid citizen…and yes, that would be a refreshing note, for a change. Here lately though, solid citizen/pro athlete seems like an oxymoron. I vote for hiring, drafting, training, the “character” people first, and then let their talent develop. We can no longer look the other way…

Some of you guys are a joke! 99% of y’all didn’t even know who Harrison was before this past week, so don’t all of a sudden anoint him the next franchise LB.
Boley is a stud. He is a very good football player and more importantly he is a Falcon. Who in the hell cares about someone who plays for the Steelers?
We need to lock this guy and not play the 1 yr tender game w/ the guy and risk losing him when he becomes an UFA.
Brooking to me is coming up to the end of his career and we need to start thinking about finding a replacement for him. Even w/ mistake-prone Demo Williams, Brooking is still the 3rd best LB on our roster.

In a season of mostly lowlights Michael Boley is a real pleasure to watch. A couple of his interceptions this year were awesome plays and I love to see what he gonna do next. We should not mess around here and lock him into a 5-6 year deal. He is the BEST player on our defense.

We need a management and coaching staff that is not afraid to cheat like the Patriots and Republicans. I am tired of all this whining. Vick this. Vick that. The team sucks. The dome sucksblah, blah, blah. We are not winning because were not willing to do what it takes to win. While the whole league was stuck on stupid believing that Randy Moss was a selfish miscreant, the Patriots stole him for a 4th round pick. Who the heck did we draft in the 4th round?
So what Vick burned us, stop the crying. Organizations that win do so because they do whatever it takes to win. If the Falcons were serious about winning they would have signed T.O. and/or Moss when they were begging to come here. If the Falcons were serious about winning they would have had a coach in here the last few years that would have put a foot in Mike Vicks butt demanded he live in the film room instead of Virginia
Regardless, its time to man up. Time to get back on the horse and make some serious gutsy moves. Lets date the hot girl with questionable morals and have fun instead of always dating he girl we can bring home to mommy

Keith Brooking back at OLB? Are you freaking kidding me? This guy was moved inside because Williams and Nicholas were better OLB(s). Brooking at OLB would be exploited by every defensive coordinator in the league if put back at WLB. At least Zimmer can hide him in the middle. Hell, it’s becoming even harder hiding him there. This franchise will never amount to anything until they get rid of these expensive veterans that are not living up to there salary. For some reason, many are in love with Highway 56. What is the fascination with this dude? He is garbage.

Boley is most definitely a keeper!!! He’s the most superior athlete on the roster not named Vick. He’s a linebacker that can cover WR’s for gods sake!! He can probably play safety better than Crocker!!

McKay is the reason this franchise is in the shape it is in. The AJC (All Journal of Constipation) still tries to beat a dead horse saying that all the Falcons woes are due to Mv-7. They complain about how his salary has the Falcons tied down for the next few years. But as this year has shown, MV-7 kept us at least competitive in each game. We are like 2-6. I can think of at least 4 of those games had we had MV-7 we would have won. I don’t see where anybody is clamoring to get rid of the good ol’ boy Keith Brooking and his slow butt. He can’t even catch a cold. They tried to put him in the middle to cover up the fact that he has lost two or three steps, not just one. But even now it is apparent that the rabbit is out the hat. Teams know to run right at him and with a simple “juke” move he is left in the rearview mirror. And when he isn’t eating dust, he is breaking up his own teammates tackles. Case in point, we had Reggie Bush stopped at the 2 and Brooking tries that one arm tackle b.s. and knocks his own teammates off of Bush to let him escape into the endzone. Nobody says a word about all the money we have tied in his geriatric butt. I fault McKay for keeping that bum, way overpaying the new fullback who has still yet to prove his value, letting T.J. Duckett go, and drafting rubber armed wide recievers. Blank needs to go after the real architect of Tampa and the early Falcons success, Tim Ruskell with Seattle. Has anyone else noted that since Ruskell has been gone, both the Falcons and Tampa Bay have gone south and the Seahawks are on the rise?

gdg73, what a stupid comment. Brooking was put in the middle because we had no middle Lb, he is a weak side backer and made the pro bowl at that position more than once. KNow the facts before making dumb a$$ posts like that. some of you need to call the falcons front office, it is obvious they have lost your phone number. I know they are just going nuts knowing that you are wasting away on that drive thru at mickey D’s when you could actually be taking them to the promised land.

Boley’s solid citizen recognition comes,in part, because he has an autistic child that he kept with him through a relationship break up with the Mom. He’s centered his life on his son.
Boley’s football acumen and tackle delivery speaks for itself. We need to pay a few players to be ‘da man.” Boley’s young, enthusiastic, and his numbers will mean he’d go in Free Agency if we don’t ante up.
Sign him.

If Brooking were making the plays Boley has this year, the team would be marketing him as Hall of Fame material.
Boley has heart and versatility. I guarantee you New England would love to have another LB in his mold. They look for versatile play making players, which is why they have back-to-back winning seasons while the Falcons are still struggling to understand why. The Falcons still think Brooking is a $4.9 mllion-per-year LB. It seems Blank’s dollars just don’t buy nearly as much performance as Krafts. That’s because the Falcons try to buy P.R. conmen like Brooking and “Done” instead of performers.

Boley is a beast!!! Our linebacking corps is solid with the exception of Brooking who should be released after this season or at the least moved from the middle. I also will give mad props to Abe for his performance this season. Harrington is barely “serviceable” at the quarterback position and “extremely limited” in the ability to make plays downfield. Leftwich needs to get back asap. GO FALCONS!!!!

I agree about McKay, but I would go one further. I would love to see Mr Blank head up I-85 a little ways, and see if Bill Cowher would be interested in being GM/Head coach of this organization. I know that fan intrest is way down, but if you brought in a true football guy to run this organization. WOW I am sorry you made a mistake with Reeves.

I have been saying for years that it was ruskell and angelo who were the real brains behind the tampa drafts but nobody will listen. Both now are GM’s in the league so that should tell us something about their talents. Why in the world would the Glazer family have let rich mcKay go if he was the real architect of those great tampa drafts? He was still under contract with Tampa but they let him walk away when Blank came calling. WHY? Because they new just like everyone else in that organization that the two underlings did all the great personnel work. Mckay was like the big bossman in any corporate environment who takes credit for others work. Once ruskell bolted for Seattle after one season in Atlanta Mckay became a deer in headlights without a right hand man to do his dirty work. Blank was fooled into thinking Mckay could do the same work in Atlanta that was done in Tampa. He can’t without his talented personnel men no longer by his side. Mckay is a great administrative type leader when it comes to things like the salary cap, committee work, marketing, etc. If blank wants to keep mcKay thats fine but bring in a “director of personnel” to put the drafts together and richie can even keep his GM title. Or promote richie to team president and just bring in a personnel guru and give him the GM title. The bottom line is they better bring in somebody real soon or this franchise is going to be in even bigger trouble as time goes on. Look no further than this years number one pick who has yet to even be in the same zipcode as an opposing QB. The future looks bleak.

Since the superbowl year the Seahawks have actually been on the decline. You cold look at every GM out there and ridicule some of their draft picks. Thanks to Vick, the Falcon’s are handcuffed until they know the cap ramifications for next year. If they extend Boley now that sends a clear signal to other players on the team that they will be gone next year. You dont want to send that signal in the middle of the season. Granted…many of them should be let go, like Brooking…but we ditched Kerney at the right time. Kerney has looked pedestrian at best in Seattle. This team is transitioning it’s entire offensive mind set. If you cry babies think that can be done in 1 year your nuts. The changes will be worth the wait. This team will be top caliber again by 2009 with Petrino at the helm.

People the Falcons need to get rid of this off season:
People the falcons need to get this offseason and in the draft:
They need 2 out of the 3 free agents and either Brohm or McFadden in the draft, and by dropping all the dead weight on the current team listed above, Atlanta should have plenty to sign the afore mentioned players. The blueprint for success is listed above. The formula: “You wanna play, you gotta pay”. Anything else will result in the season they are experiencing now and will experience for years to come. Mr. Blank, I appeal to you. Listen to the fans. Nobody else on your staff seems to have a clue about scouting talent. All I’m saying is give the fans a chance. We can’t be any worse than the staff you got now.

Here is what the Falcons need to do this off season to be a competitive team next year and in the future:
Here are the people that need to be gone:
Here are the players that need to be brought in:
Here are the players that need to be drafted:
Need at least 1 of these guys.
This is not rocket science Mr. Blank. The way your staff has evaluated talent is insane. Rich McKay is quoted in his book saying: “But in my naive thinking, there are two things we need to focus on: character and scheme fit. To give the player the best chance to succeed, he needs to fit what you do and what you’re going to ask him to do. If you can get that person and get the character side of who you want to be a Falcon, then from a work ethic and durability standpoint, you give yourself the best chance of success. That’s the biggest crock I think I have ever heard. Players are looking for 1 of 3 things: They are either looking for money, recognition, or contention. Case in point: Randy Moss. Why do you think he went to New England, and with a paycut? It’s wasn’t for the money or for the recognition. He wanted a SB. ring and NE. was the team that gave him the best chance to get that ring. Now Mike Vick. Vick didn’t care where he went and he wasn’t in a hurry to go to another team because the money was too good in Atlanta. He didn’t care about winning. He even said that he took it easy in some of the games because they really didn’t matter. BS!! You are getting paid to do a job just like every other person in the working world. Loafing or taking it easy somewhere else will probably get you fired, but not in the good NFL. Oh wait, I’m sorry. Michael Vick was doing what Mr. Blank paid him to do. He was paid to fill the seats at the Georgia Dome, not to play football. My mistake, I apologize! Anywho, what the Falcons need to do in a nutshell is:
Sign the free agents with the stats.
Draft the prospects with the stats.
Don’t over pay for talent that isn’t there or for players that are dead weight, but also don’t be afraid to shell out for quality, keyword QUALITY talent.
Leave the character evaluation for the later rounds in the draft and for the undrafted FA’s.
Follow this formula and Atlanta could be looking at a SB appearance next year.

GK, you are absolutely right, it’s time to make some gutsy moves and do what it takes to win. Like, for example, using the next two years to build up the roster using high draft picks, and then bringing Vick back when he completes his prison sentence. That way when Vick comes back he will actually have a supporting cast around him. Imagine that. That would be pretty gutsy, and would probably make this team a serious Super Bowl contender.

The Falcons really need to go the route of the Atlanta Braves, with the youth movement. Quit hanging on to these overpaid, over the hill, used to be’s.Letting Boley or Williams go, while hanging on to the ancient Brooking would be a grave mistake the Falcons cant afford. Why you signed Joe Horn is still a mystery to me?!? I mean Roddy White is showing signs of life now that a 4 yard pass isnt being thrown 200 MPH at him.Send Dunn’s side 2 side running self packing, let Norwood run the ball. Draft a QB with a cannon and lets really test this spread offense. Tell Joey and Byron thanks and Goodbye, and lets let Shockley and the Rookie run this team. Youve got to continue to beef up the lines on both sides of the ball and eventually weed out the ancients like Gandy and Coleman. Send Jenkins’ @$$ packing and let Jennings out there, at least he’s still hungry enough to try.Alge, D.Hall… Bye!!! The combo of Williams/Houston can make up for Hall, and if Milner cant replace Crump, there’s also Free Agency and the draft. Everyone’s been calling for Matt Millen’s job in Detroit, why haven’t we heard anything about McKay’s???? Finishing 8-8 is no better than finishing 2-14. Losing is losing, at least at 2-14 you get a better draft pick.
