Falcons finally win

The Falcons finally have a win.

The Falcons defeated Houston, 26-16, at the Georgia Dome to improve to 1-3. Quarterback Joey Harrington matched former Falcons backup Matt Schaub to give Bobby Petrino his first NFL victory.

Harrington threw for 223 yards, completing 23-of-29 passes, and two touchdowns — both to Michael Jenkins. Morten Anderson added four field goals.

Houston, without starting running back Ahman Green and it’s two top receivers, threw for over 300 yards, but in the end turnovers, penalties and a costly missed field goal did in the Texans.

Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall did not start the game and sat out the first quarter. He entered the game on the first play of the second quarter.

Joey looked real good, and our wideouts actually look like the 1st rd picks we spent on them, In all honesty if this offense had showed up at jacksonville and Me angelo Fall actually kept his mouth shut, we could be a 3 and 1 team. If Joey harrington keeps playing like he has the past 2 games, the falcons should use thier 1st pick on a big Running back, and with all the cash we have saved from the dawg killer going to prison, we should sign every huge off line guy we can get

It feels good to have a drop back quarterback (leader) who is trying to help the team by looking down field for a receiver and not always looking for a way to run the ball.

First?

The offense is starting to really click. It’s good to see Harrington and the WR corp really clicking. Kudos to John Abraham for another monster performance.

Question. Is Lewis Sanders the second coming of Jason Webster?

**Great game. Now if we can get Petrino to keep going with what got us to that point in the game and quit trying to sit on a lead we might really be able to take it to some teams. That conservative 3-run series after a turnover so he could take the “sure” FG that got blocked could have cost us the game.

But they looked good today.**

Good win Falcons. Intelligent fans can see this team making progress each gm. For all of you emotionally charged know nothing (so called)fans, what do you have to say about Roddy White now? Practice makes perfect, and you can see the results of working on a passing gm and good coaching.

Our rushing attack will improve. Teams started the season using the same philosophy used the last 3yrs. Because of Harrington’s reputation, teams have crowded the line of scrimmage daring Harrington to beat them with the pass. His last 2 passing performances should force DEF’s to reconsider that philosophy. This team should be 2/2.

Sanders needs to be replaced, or maybe he needs more help from Crocker, whose not playing great.

Petrino must grow a pair and stop getting too conservative in the second half. He almost blow it today.

I wouldn’t sell coach Petrino short. It could take some time but he’ll build a team with a solid foundation, somethink the birds have never had.I really beleive Harrington is better equiped for this offense than that former qb was.

Wow what a great win. Hope they keep it up, but I seriously doubt it. One down and four more to win. prediction = 5-11 on season. It’s a start.

You know what, the Falcons aren’t half bad. They could easily be 2-2 or 3-1 if mental mistakes hadn’t taken them out of the Carolina and Jacksonville game. Joey’s looking good, is efficient and playing within himself, and above all is protecting the ball. Roddy and Michael are finally starting to look like 1st rounders instead of busts (makes me wonder where they would have been at the last few years if they had had a different QB) and the offense is starting to understand Petrinos system and do good things. The defense scares me though because their still giving up big plays(but they didn’t break today). I’m also hoping they can work out the issues with the running game. Norwood and Dunn should be averaging more yards than they are, but I’m glad the coaches are starting to use their pass catching abilities out of the backfield (something Knapp never did). No matter what though, I think the Falcons hit it on the head with Petrino. He’s the type of coach this team needed and Falcons fans should be excited with the direction this team is headed in the next few years.

As an Oregonian I watch Joey Harrington all through college. Given the right offence, which the Falcons have, he has a chance to be a star QB. Keep in mind he had to learn a completely new offence and had to learn his receivers and other players this year also. Don’t get down on him if he has a bad game.

By Terrell

The falcons overall played well.I got to give it to Harrington. This guy played the best football I have ever seen him play.He didn’t hold the ball too long and he made some good decision in the passing game.I think in order for the falcons to make some kind of run for winning games the coach has to be much aggressive.Petrino got to get out of being so conservative in the play calling. Both offense and defense played at their best.Harrington just only needed some confidence and he has that now.I also hope Vick can change his life around because it not looking good for him at the moment.Go falcons!!!

GREAT GAME! The team looks fired up! And proud of them for hugging Schaub after the game. Morten is my hero. Joey looks better every game. After the Vick marijuana news this week on top of his other shenanigans, happy to see the team come together and come out fighting.
GO FALCONS!

Good win. The offense and defense, aside from Lewis Sanders, looked okay. Unfortunately Falcons fans, let's understand the "truth's" about this team.

We are 1-3. Harrington has looked great the last two games against one bad team and one young team, on the verge of stardom, missing it's star running back and wide receiver. The wide receivers looked good, but they looked good at one point last season(really want to see some consistency). We still lack a solid running attack. And last but not least, Harringtons' grand win total is now 24-45(Seems like we have a lot to look forward to).

I wonder what will happen when we actually play a good team(Tennessee anyone). This is when we will truly see where this team is and understand the needs that need to be addressed.

Matt Schaub showed why he is no longer a Falcon, he bites. That was the boringest game I’ve seen all weekend. The falcons suck, to be forced to celebrate winning ONE game after playing FOUR is pitiful. I guess, you gotta start somewhere to be 3-13. Same ole sorry a$$ Falcons.

Yea good win. The defense still scares me..We have to get Chris Houston ready to play because Sanders is looking like Webster’s twin brother out there. We need better safey play. Crocker is still Crocker which isn’t a good thing. We have to get a running game going. We won’t be able to depend on the passing game every week..We also have to do a better job in the red zone.. All these field goals are starting to remind me of the old regime…..Joey is playing pretty good. As long as he doesn’t get happy feet he will be able to produce…We really should have taken Okeye (spelling) That young kid is a beast and I haven’t seen Jamaal Anderson do anything period… Ryans for the Texans is good player too. I actually saw Keith Brooking make a good play today.

The Falcons could have scored at least another seven, if Petrino again didn’t go conservative. That said, I see him correcting problems from game to game.

Man John Abraham is good. I wish Jamal Anderson was doing more. And I wish D. Hall would just shut up and play for the good of the team.

I guess it wasn’t White and Jenkins who sucked, but rather Greg Knapp.

Go Birds! I see a possibility for something close to .500.

Harrington is looking pretty solid. For all of MeAngelo Fall’s faults, u have to give the guy credit, he is a good corner, they got nothing on him today. Houston and Sanders are shaky and will be picked on all season. Crocker is going to have to give better support. Seems he should give more help over the top.

1 win and plenty more to go…Matt is out of the picture, he didnt even win one game with the Falcons. Let alone he couldn’t beat them. Does anybody still want him back on the team???? i bet anyone he doesn’t get close to the NFC AFC championship game.

I saw a Falcon’s player on the defensive with the name “Anderson” on his back getting easily blocked on every down by the Texans.

Who is this guy? Was he drafted?

By jay black

September 30, 2007 8:46 PM | Link to this

Schaub is not all he’s cracked up to be. He doesn’t exactly suck, but Joey has him beat (today). If Joey plays like this for the rest of the season, we’re gonna be really good. I can’t wait to see us against some of the better defenses in the league though.

I saw that same guy with “Anderson” on his back play outstanding coverage against the Texans’ tight end on a goal-line play-action pass play, not allowing Schaub to throw to him and eventually forcing the Texans to kick a chip-shot field goal. Not a lot of DE’s could have made that play. Last year’s #1 pick, Mario Williams, didn’t do anything until the last four weeks of the season — this year he’s played much better and was on pace for double-digit sacks going into today’s game. It’s way too early to write off Jamaal Anderson.

Matt didn’t play badly. He completed 28 of forty passes for 317 yards and one touchdown. Joey played better and the Falcons, now a team, played pretty well in every facet of the game. They are getting better.

What a difference a QB change makes. Our receivers actually look like receivers now. Instead of turning and seeing their former QB streaking around without a clue, they now turn and see a football heading toward their hands, and not 5 feet in any other direction from them. About time.

Falcons made a good move getting rid of “sorry” Schaub. He won 2-games against a bunch of nobody’s and every Atlanta fan is saying he was the real Atlanta quarterback, well we saw what happened last week against a real football team, with 2-interceptions, 2-fumbles and a game ending sack - that is really reading the defense :) Heck, he can’t even beat the sorry Falcons. You people are acting like the Falcons have won the superbowl, giving Harrington all these cudos - people it’s only the Texans and it’s only one game.

I went to an Atlanta Falcons game today and was shocked to hear Gary Glitter’s song “Rock and Roll Part 2” played again and again after it was officially banned (see link below) by the NFL a year ago. Gary Glitter was convicted of mollesting underaged girls. Shouldn’t the Atlanta Falcons be attempting to distance themselves from criminal activity rather than continue to support it?

A very disappointed fan.

Falcons won due to mistakes by the Texans. Texans played with their third and fourth and a practice sqaud WR(andre Davis) and no starting RB and still gave the game away to the Falcons. Joey had 2 good weeks and you guys are ready to cast his bust for the HOF. Schaub has been way way more consistent than Harrington for 4 weeks. Do you REALLY think Harrington will be the starter next year? I know Schaub will start in Houston next year.

Larry, I don’t know if your being sarcastic or not but that was jamal anderson our #1 pick. But either way your right, he looked absolutely terrible. At times it almost looked as if the texans right tackle felt some kind of pity for him. Like a child trying to overpower a man. It is typical falcons drafting that I have seen my entire life. This guy is going to be a complete and total bust. Of course the two defensive guys picked right after him have star written all over them - okoye and patrick willis. For pete sake could this organization please hire a falcons GM with an eye for talent before I die and leave this world.

Shaub is still a good QB people. Get real the guy didn’t have his #1 RB ahman green or his #1 WR andre johnson or #2 receiver jacoby jones. Yet he still passed for over 300 yards. Considering the dire straits his offense was in today the guy played pretty well. I think he would have run petrino’s offense to perfection.

Nice to win, but just remember we won today, with the Texans playing without the services of at least (3)prime time players . Today I was pulling for Morten Anderson and Matt Schaub. The falcons are going to have to play better than today, if they expect to continue to win. I don’t pay much attention to the “BS” that some people put out on these blogs. There are some real losers posting to these blog sites!

PS; Joey’s playing better, but I still think Matt would have given the offense more tools to work with; especially in the mobility area. Matt will do well in the NFL and I expect we’ll be hearing more from him in the coming years! Still can’t figure out why the powers to be passed on Morten for a castaway Cowboy and an relatively unknown training camp professional.

For all you guys who hit the panic button and screamed for the Falcons to sign Leftwich, no what? You’re on the hook for $7 million for a backup qb. I doubt if Leftwich plays this year unless Joey gets hurt. That’s cap money that could have been used for another position, offensive or defensive line.

At least the Falcons didn’t sign that offensive genius Norv Turner instead of Petrino.

Jamal Anderson needs to step it up a little. Abraham cant do it all by himself. And to think, we could have taken Amobi. Trey Lewis has outplayed Jamal, and he was a 7th rounder. One more thing, Lewis WEBSTER, I mean Lewis Sanders needs to be benched. lol

Pete Prisco, over on cbs.sportsline.com, of all people gives some MAJOR props to the two “busts” on this team, Roddy White and Michael Jenkins and even floats the idea that their status as busts were the fault of, get this…

LITTLE JIMMY MORA AND MICHAEL VICK!!!

I know, I was shocked, too. No mention of the real culprit, the unimaginative and idiotic Greg “Take A” Knapp. But at least someone in the media outside of Atlanta is noticing White and Jenkins playing well with a REAL quarterback.

And by the way, anyone who still backs Vick has neither brains nor heart nor (moral) courage.

Give me a 38 & 28 won/lost record and 2-conference games, then I’m happy, regardless how the games were won. Matt Schaub & Joey Harrington’s combined Falcons record is 1 & 5 - would you rather have a 60% winner that was not prototype or a prototype with a 20% win percentage. If you chose the latter, no wonder you are a Falcons fan :)
