Petrino’s Law and Order

Saying there is a “universal” law in knowing the difference between right and wrong, Falcons coach Bobby Petrino said the team would take disciplinary action against cornerback DeAngelo Hall. for his third-quarter sideline outburst, which followed three penalties that resulted in a Carolina touchdown in the Panthers’ 27-20 victory over Atlanta Sunday.

The sanction was not disclosed and would be handled “in-house,” according to Petrino. A fine, suspension and/or adjusted playing time are possible forms of punishment.

Hall, who was contrite, said he met with Petrino Monday afternoon and said that he would accept whatever discipline was forthcoming. No determination had been made as to what that was but a handful of veteran players were consulted by Petrino.

“It don’t feel good to be the reason your team loses a game,” Hall said. “Whether you give up a touchdown pass or you get a stupid penalty it all feels the same.”

Hall’s penalties stemmed from a verbal feud with Carolina wide receiver Steve Smith. Hall reiterated that he felt that he was singled out by the official near the Carolina bench who called the penalties. Hall added that he never said anything to the official.

Petrino stressed Monday that maintaining poise was one of several elements that needed to improve for the Falcons to snap out of their 0-3 start. Petrino added that he and his staff must dwell on the positives from the Carolina game in order to snap Atlanta out of its funk.

Those positives included quarterback Joey Harrington’s performance (31-44, 361 yards, two touchdowns), the protection by the offensive line and the play of the receivers.

The inability to run the ball or stop the run and breakdowns on special teams, most notably on punt returns, must get better. Petrino wants more out of punt returner Adam Jennings but he also said the blocking of opposing “gunners” needs to improve.

In terms of injuries, starting right cornerback Lewis Sanders suffered a mild concussion and was denied re-entry into the game by the team doctors. Sanders wanted to play but the Falcons’ medical staff exercised caution.

If he played as well as he talked, D Hall would be a 1st ballott HOF.

Steve, You may be the most useless blogger of any of the ajc team beat writers. The team you cover plays one game a week yet you consistently use articles already in the paper to fill your blog rather than giving us some other insight or personal thoughts on the game itself and what you felt went right or wrong. Perhaps you should look to David O’Brien or Sekou Smith for help on how to properly cover a team.

Petrino must teach Hall who’s the coach and who the player is … that was totally embarassing to be seen on national TV … acting like a child (I believe he is) screaming and waving his arms like a 2-year-old. It definitely stole a win from the Falcons. Maybe he didn’t want Harrington to be the main topic of conversation so he stole the show so to speak … after all another Hokie you remember had the same traits!! Me, me, me …

**I like Coach Petrino. I like what I saw from 99.9% of the Falcons last night and I am confident that they can win many games. Joey is a great QB when he is given the time. I am loving what I see from ABRAHAM. The man is a monster and I love to see him play.

It’s no need to throw in the towel it has only been three games we will get a win.**

This team really doesn’t look all that bad. It takes time for a new system to work, and they seem to be improving. Another year of working together and a DT, power RB, OL and QB in next year’s draft (remember we’ve got that extra second rounder from the Schaub trade) and we’ll be in business.

Mr. Blank, Please send MeAngelo packing as Vick and Mora. Get rid of the over-rated bum!!! How about signing more players with class?

It was really just the Jawing penalty that bothered me. It’s good to see a contrite D Hall and good to see some discipline in Flowery Branch

Now we pay the price for not drafting better defensively. Brooking has to come off of the field on passing downs. He’s constantly behind in coverage. S play is atrocious but as McKay has said for years now “They’re lots of safeties out there”

When is the last time that one of our safeties knocked the ball loose from someone?

Which brings up turnovers…one in 3 games isn’t going to cut it. Long year? Several long years and Blank hss to wonder what his money is buying (hint..lots of losses) If I’m Petrino I’m on the phone to Michigan soon. I mean it’s not like he can take Hall’s scholarship away.

Three weeks into Blank’s Boys Club and Petrino and his staff have already learned that character, discipline, and intelligence has no value on a Blank owned team. How weak does Petrino and his staff look when another Va Tech scholar cost the Falcons the game and defined for all to see that the players not the coaches are in charge.

Rich McKay do us all a favor and take Va Tech players off our draft board. You may also want to find a coach that can control his players………..this isn’t the Big East.

Yes, Yes, VICK LOVERS!!! Let the HATE you have in your hearts for white people FLOW THROUGH YOU. You have every right to hate them for making all those hard-to-follow football rules, those confusing governmental laws and all those big words to make your lives difficult.

Ooooooooooooooohhhhhhh, I can FEEL Your ANGER, your unbridled RAGE and the sweet, sweet HATE you have in your hearts for all those FALCONS who dislike Mike Vick and DeAngelo Hall for their actions.

Yessssssssss……. Yessssssssss…….

The HATE is STRONG with you, Vick Lovers!! Your HATRED pleases me. Each of you shall serve me well.

Together, we can SAVE Mike Vick and DeAngelo Hall!

Could not help but wonder if the same childish tantrum would have happened if Dan Reeves were on the sideline and not a rookie college coach.

Way to go Blank, you get what you deserve, a losing season and a mob of over-paid unprofessional jerks.

Inability to run? 17 carries for 87 yards by Norwood and Dunn…that doesn’t sound like the inability to run, more like not establishing the run.

If you give Norwood 15-20 touches a game (excluding kick returns) he’ll make something happen.

Hey Steve, why don’t you ask Rich McKay is the Falcons are done drafting THUGS from VaTech?

Why don’t you ask him if he’s going to start being smart and start drafting heavily from the SEC.

Meaning, I’m sick of people assuming the Falcons will pick the highly overrated Brian Brohm.

I want Andre Woodson. Yep, me, a white guy, wants Andre Woodson, because he’s a more polished version of Donovan McNabb.

I have been a Falcon Fan since their beginning (1966). Although I have moved in and out of the Atlanta area many times, I always try to watch the Falcons where ever I live. And when In Atlanta I have purchased season tickets when available. DeAngelo Hall should have bee pulled from the Game when the penalty was called on him. If the coach wants to keep controll, he must do things like this in a timly and convincing way and no better way than to inbrass Hall in front of all the fans there!!! Take Him off the field.

Law and order? There is no law and damn sure no order. Hall should have been yanked from the game and suspended immediately, without pay. Don’t give me that toughguy b****** and then not act!

I was bothered the most by the low life tirade on the sidelines…like I said before i’d rather lose games without Hall on the team, then have him out there acting a fool…and do stupid stuff that changes the complexion on the game…Grady Jackson needs to slap him good. Please send this idiot message…like a four game suspension.

I am not the most diehard Falcon fan - catching about 2/3 of their games each year. But D. Hall has always been outplayed by opponents best receivers. Chad Johnson made him look so slow in that preseason game. Hall needs to study gamefilm once in a while if he thinks he is anything better than an average cornerback. What ever happened to the other Va. Tech defensive back we drafted so high. Is he a bust?? And while I’m at it Brooking is no Middle Linebacker. Every time I see him on the field he is looking down at the opposing ball carrier - he seems to rarely be in on a tackle.

Did Blank make neutering Petrino a condition of employment?

By mountain jim

What I would like to hear from Steve’s coverage of the team, is what team officials are saying privately about the officiating in this game.

Not excusing Hall for losing his composure, but just what did he do wrong on the 2nd penalty on the chuck within 5 yards of the line (and not to the face), and if Hall says he said nothing to the (same) official, why did he throw the flag that changed the game momentum and outcome?

Smith was jawing and behaving just as badly as Hall up to that point, it really looked like that official was trying to help Smith and throw the game to the Panthers with those last 2 calls.

Did Petrino telling the refs “You Suck” after the 2nd penalty help cause the 3rd?

I hope the Falcons are sending tapes to the league and complaining about the officiating in this game, because it seemed quite poor at least and appeared affected by a possible corrupt official at worst.

DeAngelo does need to be punished, but those were some rediculous penalties called on him. I can’t say I blame him for getting upset, but he does need to work on controlling it. However I couldn’t have been more pleased with his coverage skills against arguably the NFL’s best receiver in Steve Smith.

Nope, but I would have taken the superior Takeo Spikes over the highly overrated Bug, Keith Brooking.

How embarrassing has he been the last three years?

Only slightly less embarrassing than the two THUGS from VaTech.

Maybe it’s time for Tony Taylor to start at MLB.

I’m old school. The discipline should be an in house thing. John Abraham should take Hall out back and beat his a* until he ends up on the injured list. Can you imagine a Dick Butkus or a Lawrence Taylor letting that punk cost them a game?

of course, he and I both have something in common, we both worked at chalk mines when we were younger.

This guy is clearly a cancer on the team.He has cover skills but at what cost ? The worst is, if Petrino decides he’s not worth the trouble and moves him out, it may well devide a team further that disparately needs to focus on football and team unity.Look at it this way what did the loss cost the team ? much more than 100k I’d bet.

when nobis was shown smoking a cigar following his being drafted by the falcons my dad said “you know…that image isn’t what the falcons want…” when questioned by my grandson about MV i truthfully told him that the only criminal act that i ever saw by a black was my roomate smoking weed (and i’m pretty sure it was my weed)…i know i’ve lived in the north for a long time but seeing comments like “blacks won’t study cause it’s too white” makes me wonder what the h* happened to Atlanta

I am an African-American,die-hard Falcon fan. GET RID OF DEANGELO HALL!!! If you keep him around you will not go to the next level. He is not the kind of man that will take REAL responsibility for his actions and he’s obviously me-first. He does not want to be in Atlanta. He will give you lip-service on being professional and accepting responsibility, but when the rubber meets the road all it remains to be is just lip service and on top of that, he can’t cover anybody.

Wanna know why DeAngelo Hall lost his temper? BECAUSE HE’S INEPT AS A CORNERBACK. HE COULDN’T COVER A FAT WOMAN IN HIGH HEELS!!! GET RID OF HIM. HE WILL NEVER BE AN UPPER ECHELON CORNERBACK. PLUS HE DOSEN’T KNOW HOW TO CONDUCT HIMSELF ON THE PLAYING FIELD.

By Lil E

September 29, 2007 4:07 AM | Link to this

Inept at cornerback ?!

What is WRONG with you people ?

Were we watching the same game ?

It’s one thing to not like DeAngelo Hall, but you have to respect his talent.

Just how many touchdowns did Steve Smith have after coming off another spectacular week ? …Don’t worry, I’ll wait…

Also, like mountain jim said, those flags were a result of bad officiating. The 2nd flag was an obvious jam, that was miscalled as a personal foul. The 3rd flag was completely unwarranted, and the penalty for the flag was unfair. The Panthers should have been penalized f or whatever flag the Falcons received. However, that is the past.

Also, D. Hall is a fiery competitor that I want to see retire with the Falcons. Sure, he might have snapped at the coach. He is paying a hefty chunk of money for that. After all, he is still young. Hell, young enough to be some of you guy’s son. Think about that while you guys demand for a trade. Who could we possibly get that’s better than him ? How would trading our best defensive back even make sense for our Falcons defense ?

Some of you guys are so simple minded and brutal that it’s ridiculous. Like a medieval mob. Sheesh.
