D-Hall vs. Smith could determine outcome
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
There are plenty of key match-ups for Atlanta’s home opener against Carolina Sunday, but two that could determine the outcome are: Falcons CB DeAngelo Hall vs. WR Steve Smith and Falcons OT Wayne Gandy vs. DE Julius Peppers.
Smith and Hall really didn’t get to square off last season. Smith was hurt in Atlanta’s season-opening win and the Panthers threw just seven times in their late-season victory at the Georgia Dome.
There could be a whole lot of catching up to do.
Hall is coming off his second Pro Bowl appearance and is off to a very good start this season but he hasn’t been challenged like he will this weekend. Hall likely is going to be placed in man coverage on Smith, regardless of what side of the field Smith aligns himself.
It will be imperative for the Falcons to get pressure on quarterback Jake Delhomme to make him get rid of the ball quickly, otherwise, if Smith has time to run his routes, there is no DB in the NFL who can guard him. Hall will have help much of the time but Smith is adept at getting through double and triple teams.
Where Smith is most dangerous is running the ball after he makes a catch. The Falcons are going to have to swarm and wrap up because Smith’s competitiveness is never-ending.
As for Gandy vs. Peppers, Gandy is coming off a hamstring injury, which isn’t good when it comes to having to protect off the edge against a freakish athlete like Peppers. The Falcons likely will have a running back or second tight end nearby to help Gandy, whose mobility could be compromised by the sore hammy.
QB Joey Harrington can’t dare hang on to the ball for too long this week, otherwise, he’s going to end up at the bottom of a pile again. Carolina is going to bring a ton of heat until the Falcons prove they can counter.

The Falcons will fail to get the ball in the endzone again. Panthers win 24-9.

Why on earth would we put Gandy out there with a sore hammy against Peppers? He can barely block when he was healthy. Put Foster back out there instead of Gandy. He didn’t do that bad last week!

Unfortunately, the Falcons will be the goats in both matchups. Gandy was totally outmanned in the Vikings game and looked like slow-flowing molasses on pass plays. Hall will be beaten several times by Smith just as he was by Chad Johnson. He isn’t THAT good. Panthers win big time. Joey is sacked another 10 tens before he is replaced by Leftwich, who is sacked 11 more.

Wayne Gandy v. Julius Peppers = Chris Redmen in Second Half. At least its a 4:15 game, everyone should be nice and tailgaited up before kickoff!

This unfortunately will likely be a 7 sack game for the panthers. We have to max protect the whole game. Keep hope alive and go get em Falcons!

I like the Falcons chances if they can score some points. If Harrington plays poorly, put in Redman and give him a shot. The QB position is key for this team. Remember this is suppose to be the best team Harrington ever played with. That hasn’t changed. The problems you see now with this team has always been there. The Falcons must win this one to have any shot at Division or playoffs.

D-Hall is a “Deion Sanders” wanna be. All he does is run his mouf and gets burned weekly. He ran his mouf about Chad Johnson and Chad ate him for lunch. He dogged T.O. and T.O. scorched him and spat on him like the punk he is. All he does is talk, talk, talk…Watch and see. He got burned in Minny and last week. My buddies call him “D’angelo Fall”

Here’s hoping Abraham has a game somewhat like last year’s incredible season opening performance against Carolina. (but without the late injury, of course.)
He’s ramping things up, affected a lot of plays last week even though he has not yet had a big sack and turnovers type game.

It appears no one cares.
Right now every one is thing:
We had Matt Schaub.
Now we have Joey and Byron.
Under the Snmith’s and Coach Reeves we went to the Super Bowl.
Under Blank and McKay we’ve gone down the toilet!.
If Blank isn’t man enough to fire McKay I think we all wish he’d sell the team!

i know it’s a long shot but i can’t wait to see who the ‘inactive’ QB is for this week. PETRINO tips his hand that move…
also, as you reported STEVE, there is a reason the locker room had a different vibe to it this week…LEFTWICH!! the players KNOW!!! and they KNOW who they want to take the field with!!!
and i’m sure the re-signin’ of MORT brought some life to the locker room as well.

hall will probably slow smith down but wont stop him.but i think the real battle is who’s covering the other side, because so far no CB have shown they can hold up(sanders).other than him we have a pretty good rookie(houston) who could get torched by making rookie mistakes.but over all i think the person opposite s.smith is gonna look like a pro bowler.

How about containing John Abraham? Remember last years season opener? Maybe Atlanta will counter. I would like to see Abraham turn it on, our running game come back to life, and some deep completions(TD’s) to White and Horn. That’s obviously asking wayyyy too much.

Gandy has been a liability when completely healthy. He is not at 100%, so that definitely does not bode well for Harrington. Peppers is a hand full for the leagues’ premier linemen.
There are some receivers in the league that D. Hall can match up well against. And then there is that group of elite receivers that Hall needs help with. Steve Smith is certainly in that category. Hopefully Zimmer has a scheme that will allow Hall some over the top help. He will definitely need it!

If these are the key matchups, we are toast. No way D. Hall can keep up with a healthy Steve Smith - there is not a corner in the NFL who can including Champ Bailey. The Falcons would be better off bracketing Smith with Houston (or Sanders) and a safety and letting D. Hall go man to man with Drew Carter.
As for Gandy and Peppers, Gandy may have had a chance in a one on one matchup 5 years ago but certainly not now. The Falcons had better double Peppers with a back or TE in obvious passing situations.
In order for us to win, I think we need to be able to stop the run (preferably with 7). If we can do that, I think Abraham and company can get pressure on Delhomme and force him into mistakes. On the other side of the ball, the playmakers (Norwood, Dunn, Crumpler, White, Horn, Jenkins) need to make plays.
If we are in this game, I think it will be a defensive battle where a big play or two will decide the outcome. Hopefully, Joey will throw the ball down field and give those guys a chance to make plays.

Steve Smith v. D-Hall should be a good match up. It’s time for D-Hall to strap up and lock “86” down. Thing is, no one else seems to be able to do it. If D-Hall is successful, look for him to be headed to another Pro Bowl! Let’s support our Falcons for the home opener…they are gonna need us!

I don’t think DeAngelo can cover any top receiver in the league. I will say that he’s a fast corner but he’s not a shut down corner. He’s totally overrated.

This one will be interesting..I’ll say it again..D’Hall’s talents would be better as a receiver. Steve Smith is going to get his..he always does. Harrington will asSalted by Peppers (get it?) hurt in the 1st quarter, and Leftwich..yes, Leftwich will finish the game. Falcons still lose..but only by 10. The lottery number tonight is 387

D-Hall is all talk and no shut down of the great wipeouts. It’s time for him to allow his play on the field to speak for him and not the many words that come out of his mouth. Come out of your sleep D-Hall and cover some folks. Covering wide receivers now and then does not get it done. It seems when you are up against a great or average receiver, you get beat not once, but more than once. Take a close look at the films and judge how you cover folks. You have to start taking responsibly and learn how to shut some folks down. Then you can run your mouth because your play will speak for itself. To be honest with you and at this moment, I wouldn’t allow my child to wear your jersey. D-Hall, please take my advice, you might have the skills and the talent, however, at this point, you are not showing what you can really do on the field with keeping the ball out of the hands of those who you are assigned to cover. I wish you well; however, if you don’t get it right, you are going to have a very long season. D-Hall – money talks and bull** walks. Get your act together and play some football.

blah blah blah blah blah blah the falcons need to play as well as they did last week and now that we got rid of that kicker who really cost us that game vs the jags just as much as joey who really played ok. he just refuses to make the big play if wrs are covered throw the ball away dont keep taking sacks. he is a PRO should know that by now. but hey we will beat the panthers and D-HALL will do his DEION DANCE all over puniy steve smith and the panthers. I am a falcons fan, but I can’t find out who told D’Angelo Hall that he was a good corner. It must be our opponents who keep pumping up his head as they run by to score another touch down. Tell D-Hall to shut up and shut someone down for once. Maybe we can trade him and get 2 decent corners instead. Go Falcons!

D’Hall is pathetic. What a joke. All pro at running his mouth, but not much else. Dumber than dirt to boot. You would think he would learn to shut up after giving up 30 yards in penalties not including the interference. Now he blows another tackle on Steve Smith. The best receivers in the game burn his a$$ all the time.

I am so glad the Falcons are losing for all those people who said that Vick was the cause of many of their playoff fails what’s there excuse now? All fans eyes should be open to the fact that they are just a inconsistant team no matter who their QB was or is. And Hall actually lost the game for them running his mouth. I hope now everyone sees it doesn’t matter who is behind the ball if the team is on the field playing like rookies. 3 games down and 14 to go may the falcons record be 0-17.

Good game Falcons, you have something to build on - Harrington is a decent QB and you have some solid receivers. Hall p** me off with the interference but that’s football. Resulting longer drive gave us the TD we probably deserved earlier but wore out your D more, helped us get some run yards later on. Otherwise I think if he had not held your offense would have been enough to win the game in the end. Hall does deserve some credit for keeping Smith under control most of the game, that’s not easy. Good luck the rest of the year (except when you play us).
