More work for Norwood?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Flowery Branch — Things were not all gloom and doom around Falcons’ headquarters Monday, a day after the team took a 24-3, season-opening loss to Minnesota. Nobody was pleased, but players were very much in the mode of moving forward instead of lamenting a bad loss and having the negativity carry over.
Quarterback Joey Harrington and running back Warrick Dunn said the offensive failures were in large part a result of Minnesota taking away the deep pass and allowing Atlanta to gain yardage in small chunks. They also said that everyone is still feeling their way through this offense and it could take a few more games before everyone is comfortable with what they are doing.
“In the beginning we have to try to keep it together, win some games and not go 0-4, 1-3,” Dunn said. “If we could have a winning first quarter [of the season] while still putting everything together, still feeling things out, the offense is gradually going to come together and be tight.”
Coach Bobby Petrino said he is going to have to incorporate tailback Jerious Norwood more into the game plan as well. Norwood touched the ball just seven times against Minnesota. He averaged 6.6 yards on 5 runs and had 2 catches for 24 yards.
Injury-wise, Petrino said the Falcons came through the game relatively unscathed.

The Vikings were one of the weaker teams on the schedule. Can anyone see any wins in site? 0-16 is not so bad.

I agree with making Norwood more apart of the offense. He averaged 6.6 yards per carry and Dunn averaged 2.5. Big difference between second and four and second and seven or eight.

Enough of the feel good, I’m sorry we didn’t play well, put this behind us, we blame ourselves,…and on and on yak. Get a Quarterback that can throw more than 3 yards and a tailback bigger than 180 lbs. And a new OLT. Sad weekend for Georgia…

I think that’s a good idea to give the ball to Norwood. Hope the O Line gives him better protection. The threat is gone so defenders are going to come right up the middle. I know Joey is not trusted with the long pass, but got to find a way to get the ball down field without a interception. Still looking for the rest of the team to show up. Hope I don’t have the wait the whole season.

Ya think, Petrino? Norwood is now going on year 2 of being the most explosive player on this roster. Hopefully Petrino won’t be Coach #2 to ignore that fact.

Wonder why Petrino did not have Norwood more into the game plan for this game?
That was an obvious need to nearly all of us fans.
I believed Petrino knew what he was doing before this game, now I have my doubts.
And I don’t believe MN took away the long pass - I saw receivers open long several times but Joey did not, or was afraid to make the throw.
And why are they so enamored with this new FG kicker? If he keeps kicking with that much of a hook, his accuracy will never be very high, imho.

While I agree that Norwood needs to touch the ball more, I still don’t know if that is going to help our other problem on offense and that’s the QB. I swear I wonder where this guy head is even before he came here to Atlanta. How in the world you figure it’s a good idea to change the play and start audibling with 4 seconds left on the play clock is beyond me. Joey has been in the league long enough to know to pay attention to the clock better than that. Maybe it was the noise but man he just looked rattled (remember Doug Johnson?) out there after getting hit a couple of times. He HAS TO keep his head about him or it won’t matter how many times Norwood touches the rock. As for the rest of the fellas, you HAVE to play with more fire and grit. Losing is one thing, GIVING UP is another totally unacceptable thing. I’m still with the hometeam, but for the love of God could you guys play like you like, if not love, your jobs, please? I know it’s better than the one I have.

shouldn’t they have realized after the 4 pre-season games that they should incorporate Norwood more? Shouldn’t master mind Petrino make adjustments at halftime? To me it looked mostly like the same offence the Falcons ran last year 3 and out!!!! Thank goodness the defence actually played fairly well otherwise the score could have been even worse! Imagine this team from yesterday playing the Colts!!!! holy college football blowout Batman!!!

Use Norwood more? wow, the Falcons new head coach IS a genius! what a joke! Yeah, I guess the Vikes took away the long pass, how long would it take for Joey to throw the ball downfield? he coulda been sacked ten times instead of just 6. what a bunch of losers. The offense failed because it is NO GOOD! As for as Blank goes, keep overpaying for D-linemen that can’t stay healthy, fullbacks and some other marginal players and the team will be just fine.

Enough of this feel good “sorry we lost”, “we blame ouselves”, “we have to move on”…yak. Go get a quarterback who can throw more than three yards,…a running back bigger than 180 lbs, and a new OLT. Sad when the only known team to win is Georgia Tech. I’m tired of puking on Monday morning because of the lame excuses for losing.

Wow I haven’t seen the Falcons look this bad since well…the last time Vick didn’t play.
I would love to hear from all of the idiots that thought Joey would be an upgrade over Mike Vick. You got what you wanted and so I hope your happy.
Vick started 4 years in Atlanta and we made the playoffs twice and the other 2 years we missed by 1 game.
It’s unfortunate but now we are back to the days when playoffs are out the question by week 6
So stop the “we were crappy with Vick” garbage because at least with Vick because we always were competetive. That garbage yesterday was laughable

Why are the two top football coaches in this state so frigging loyal to guys with lesser talent / fading skills?
Knowshon Moreno and Jerious Norwood should both be starting for their teams. Moreno is far and away the best back the Dawgs have, it’s not even close. Dunn’s skills have hit the wall and are eroding. Norwood should be starting, Dunn should be the third down back because of his blocking.
End of story.

We can still be 9-7. Just need to get other players involved. I think Norwood should touch the ball 15 to 20 time a game, passing and rushing. Dunn 10 to 15 times per game rushing and passing. What is the purpose of the huge fullback we got in free agency. All that money he should be at least opening holes for Dunn and Norwood.

Get rid of the old and bring in the youth. ——NORWOOD—- Why have we not considered another QB use some of the Vick money and pick up someone worthy other than Harrington.

If Vick had played this game we would lost even worse, he would have run around with the ball in one hand and lost 4 more fumbles.I know all you experts have time to analyze the game when the drive thru slows down, but given a new coach and new offence, I thought they moved the ball well at times , just not consistent. Give it time. We now have a real good coaching crew and real QB.

Stevie Wonder can see Norwood needs more carries. One thing Petrino needs to know is that preseason games are not going to be like the real deal. That last preseason game the guys needed the reps instead of sitting on the pines, and yes Pretrino u want be seeing anymore vanilla defenses. This is the nfl which stands for not for long when you’re content.

Atlanta played like a bunch of punk. you have to force you will on a team. you have to play like mad dog under control! the team played like they were being hunted. what the hell are they playing for. with a player gone (mike Vick) and this team is that weak. I am no coach but I do know you put the ball in the play makers hands. they play to much like a bunch of punks . will this team be for ever weak as pond water. you must feel you are going to win. But when you look at this team they have no heart. as a season ticket holder no way I pay this kind of money for ticket . Joey is a first rounder and he and the offense played weak. we need a QB that can come in and win now to hell with a draft pick that is not proven in the NFL. No way I spend this kind of money next year to see a new QB come in and it take him 4 to 5 year to get the skills need to be a good NFL stater because that what it will take. I as a season ticket holder I will not buy tickets to see us rebuild every year. If Vick is not coming back in 2009 why should I pay to see this team lose. Fans should have winning standards. Having a winning team every 4 to 5 year is not going to cut it. If we bring in a new QB( as in draft pick) in to run this team I am out of here. we need a proven QB now . Bring Vick in 2009! If you draft a QB next bring Vick back until the new man is ready and that take at lest 3 to four year to be good. don’t bring him in to get thrown in the fire to get hurt on your investment! It time to win and now!!! 1700 dollars is a lot of money for this product. At home depot if it don’t work I can get my money back or a new idem to replaced the old one. Falcon management need to think long and hard on this team and next year and the year after. no more want to be draft picks at QB! proven or most Fan are gone!

When Dan Reeves took over the Falcons, in the first eight games, went 1-7. They finished at 7-9. The following season they won fourteen and went to the Super Bowl. This season is going to be one of trial, tribulation and, ultimately, vindication. Over the past two seasons, with Vick, the Falcons had a record of 15-17. That’s not exactly setting the woods alight. Those of you who continue to bring Vick into the conversation need to stop. he is null and void and gone for a very long time. He won’t be available to play again until he’s in his early thirties, if then. For the time being the Falcons have to grind and see what works and what doesn’t. We know Vick didn’t do all that much. Chris Chandler is the only quarterback to have taken the Falcons to the promised land. As I recall, he was a castoff and was viewed as a career back-up. In the first eight games he was here all that criticism seemed justified. In the next 24 games the Falcons went 20-4. It could happen again and I think it will!

Man I miss Vick!
Three observations:
Norwood needs to start. Duh.
Laurent Robinson needs to start.
HARRINGTON is too scared to continue to start. I see more progression with Redman because at least he’s not scared to run the offense. Joey is scared to death and is clueless what to do with the ball once ANY pressure starts.

If Petrino sees any lack of effort from anybody on this team, I hope he benches them and put in players that want to play HARD. When Joey Harrington starts checking off with 4 seconds left on the play clock, he doesn’t look like an experienced QB.
At least coach Petrino is not in denial about Warrick Dunn’s ability to handle the running load. I’m disappointed that coach didn’t use Jerious more, but at least we won’t have to wait for the season to see a change. Dunn actually did well considering the inept blocking in front of him. Jerious just looked like a better runner.

One thing makes me uneasy.
I may be overreacting, but as meticulous as Bobby is at pre-game planning, I’m shocked he didn’t envision a need for more touches by Norwood, PRIOR TO the Vikings game…
With the shaky QB situation, and with Warrick almost as old as Petrino, the offense should have REVOLVED AROUND Jerious!
Overreaction??

David Duke in Vick’s FIRST year with Dan Reeves they went 9-6-1 and won a playoff game. In Mora’s FIRST year with Vick we went 11-5 and reached the NFC Championship game. So whats your point. Joey has never made the playoffs. Dont make excuses just because its Petrinos FIRST year. We had a lot of injuries the past two seasons, and not to mention an inept offensive and defensive coordinator. And we had no depth whatsoever, thanks to our GM, who by the way is way over-rated. And yeah I know Vick is gone, but you cant blame him for the past couple of years.

What is it with these guys. Why do they think Dunn brings anything to the table except a “true” 2-3 yard average per run. His stats are always overstated because he usually breaks a big gainer.
Norwood is bigger, stronger and faster.

I’m not quite sure what you folks expected…this team was bad with Vick on it, take him off and it effective pulls the curtain on the teams’ shortcomings that have been ignored the last 4-5 seasons. This is a bad team; anything more than 4 wins is a pipe dream…I’m afraid that the Falcons will accomplish something that we all thought impossible…make the Hawks season look great by comparison.
At least UGA lost…there is a silver lining.
