Dismal start for offense

The Falcons offense was out of sync and inconsistent all day in the season-opening loss to Minnesota Sunday. The Falcons offense never got inside the Vikings’ 25-yard line and surrendered two touchdowns to the Vikings defense.

Coming into the game, it was the Falcons defense that that was suspect. The Bobby Petrino-led offense was supposed to overcome the loss of Michael Vick. It never clicked.

Will it take time for the offense to catch up or is it going to be a long season?

Can’t really blame Harrington for this one. The play calling was at best, poor and the offensive line was terrible. Looks like it’s going to be a long season.

Pathetic as usual. Totally reminded me of the last 40 years. At least with Vick it we lost in interesting ways (not that he was good). This was just like the old Falcons. They will win 4 games this year. This was a show i have seen for too many years. Over and out Falcons. Thank god for college football.

Well Atlanta fans, who are you gonna blame now? This is the same team we had last year and its the same problems. Now Crumpler is gonna suffer. Harrington can’t handle ANY pressure at all. All of his passes were almost all checkdowns. This team was 10 times better with Vick. No Vick = losing season. Vick will be back…..

Got to love petrino’s game plan. Keep your most explosive weapon (jerious norwood) out of the game. Nothing against dunn but he is to small and to old to carry the load full time. I was getting sick of watching mighty mouse get stopped at the line of scrimmage. Norwwod has game breaking speed and can change the outcome of a game in a hurry but you have got to get him the ball. I thought petrino was supposed to be smarter than the last regime. And rich mcKay is finally going to get exposed this year for some sorry drafting since he has been GM. No more mike vick to cover up the deficiences of this sorry and untalented bunch.

It is definitely going to be a long season. I saw nothing today on offense or defense to get excited about. A big loss to a very mediocre Vikings team does not bode well for the Falcons. Now we get to hear all year about how great the birds would have been if only Con-vick was playing. I can hardly wait. Just wait till next year!!!

There MAY be hope for Falcon offense if Harrington gone. Anyone preferable! Two interceptions returned for touchdowns? Completely and totally unacceptable. No lamea++ excuses for him! Defense will never be worth damn with Brooking calling shots. Total loser! Harrington talentless, quitter and loser. Always has been and always WILL be! Starr Red, whatever his name is, or ANYONE else! Harrington gift-wrapped two scores for Vikings. Michigan needs to stop sending its garbage South! First, Joey Harrington, although not to blame for everything that occurred today, is not the answer for this team. He does not see the field well and might as well be grounded in concrete.

Secondly, the wide receivers (minus Robinson) are garbage and show that it was not Vick who was the issue in the passing game.

Thirdly, NORWOOD IS A BEAST and needs to play more. I love Dunn, but he is ineffective without Vick as a threat.

Lastly, this is a “rebuilding year” and let us TRUE FANS understand that and keep supporting THE BIRDS!

This team only won 7 games with Vick last year so, I am no longer sold on Vick being the answer either.

We just need to suffer through this year and hopefully get a good draft pick. We can bring in a Matt Ryan or a Brian Brohm. That is the answer.

People remember Vick’s playoff win at Green Bay and the year we won our division. They overlook the fact the past two years have been a lot less successful.

Vick is an athlete but, he is not a QB.

First, it’s one game on the road. But, that offensive line was terrible. Not wanting to play a blame game, but if I did, it’d be on every coach and player’s shoulders. Every one of them contributed to such an awful display this afternoon. Play calling may have been dicatated by events we can’t see since either Joey didn’t get protection long enough to throw down field or the receivers couldn’t get open. But there were open plays all game. Nobody made a play. Where was Abraham? Where was Horn and why the heck did Norwood not touch the ball any more than he did? The Bulldogs and the Falcons go through the weekend without a TD. When was the last time that Happened? The only good news is that the team now has regular season, first team film to look at and make adjustments..but we’ll keep watching in the desert. I’m hitting the pool now!

Harrington held the ball toooooo long I counted 8 seconds on a couple sacks. He cant just sit back there with 2 hands on the ball, close his eyes, and wait to be sacked. The QB needs to make a play or get rid of the ball. He is making that beautiful pocket look bad. Well he is a nice person.

To answer a few paragraphs up from “UnHappyFan” I blame Vick. As far as I know, nobody on this team made him get into dogfighting. I am a Vick (football player)fan. Mike Vick the dogfighter screwed MY team and therefore we move on without our old QB. Thats 130 million dollars MY team could get some quality players with. So who do I blame. Vick Ookie Ron Mexico Take you pick, any will do.

Yes, it’s that bad. Harrington is just as bad as in Detroit. He stood there over and over, taking sacks instead of throwing the ball away. Harrington could not pull the trigger, and the coach couldn’t pull the quarterback. Harrington is a cast off quarterback, so why is he so special. Redman outplayed him in the preseason, so why not give him a chance. If Harrington stays, this team will not win three games.

It’s going to be a very long season for the Falcons. I was willing to think positive, even though they are going with a cast-off QB. Well, 3 strikes and you’re out, Joey. At least Matt Schaub had a good day and the Texans won. The current Falcons remind me of the ‘66 Falcons, slow and giving up a lot of QB sacks. Yours Truly, Ron Mexico

By Brad

September 9, 2007 4:35 PM | Link to this

I’ll stand by this statement… the offense wasn’t that bad. Harrington completed most of his passes, the 2nd interception was Jenkins’ fault (which was the only drop I re-call, they caught almost everything), the running game did a fair job against one of the best run defenses in the league, they converted a solid percentage of their 3rd downs… the struggles on offense came between the offensive line giving the receivers time to get open. Harrington held on to the ball while the receivers tried to get open and the offensive line couldn’t hold long enough. If we take 3-4 of those sacks back, and Harrington gets the passes off on them, I’d bet we score a couple touchdowns.

Now what I thought was the worst thing we did all day, was not get any pressure on Tarvaris Jackson. How do a premiere end in Abraham and a top 10 draft pick at the other end not get to the quarterback even 1 time? Not that Jackson had a lot of completions or passing yards, but we didn’t force him into mistakes. We got 1 turnover from him and no sacks, when we should have had 4-5 sacks, 8-10 hits on the quarterback and at least, AT LEAST, forced him into 2 turnovers, giving us good starting field position. Every time we pinned Minnesota back in their own zone, we let them get the ball up to the 50 yard line before the punted, forcing us to have to go 80+ yards almost every drive. Harrington and the offense got to mid-field quite a few times.

If we don’t let them get to mid-field every drive, we turn 3 of those sacks into completed passes, and Jenkins doesn’t drop that ball in the 4th quarter, we at least have a fighting chance at winning this game.

By Navigator

September 9, 2007 4:36 PM | Link to this

He bloggers, get some reality. Stop comparing Vick to what we have now. He’s going to be in prison for a year or two, so what Vick could or could not do is irrelevant. The Falcons sat on these cast offs, and made no attempt to trade for someone with successful experience, even as an experienced back up. Don’t even mention that Schaub won his first game today. Yeah we know, they couldn’t keep him, because poor MVick was threatened by his presence. If you believe he was traded for any other reason, you’re smoking somethin.

By billy g

September 9, 2007 4:37 PM | Link to this

BOTTOM LINE

The offensive line is, once again, horrible. Vick disguised the inneptitiude of the OL with his dazzling runs.

The Falcons lead the league in rushing because of MV, not the OL. We could not run the ball today and we were beaten. We lost with Vick and we will lose without him. Fix the OL and we fix the offense.

Simple.

I think we should give this team a chance. It is only the first game of the season. We all know that we need an upgrade at QB because JH is not the answer. Everyone out there that talked bad about MV7, he no longer there to blame. At least with him we had hope now we can only look forward to the 08 DRAFT. Lets just get over this MV7 thing. he made a mistake and lets just move ahead and give the team a chance.

The “Franchise Killa” Vick LIVES!

How did Shaub do?

By Rutuger

September 9, 2007 4:42 PM | Link to this

Where are some people getting the idea we would have won this game had Vick been around? This is precisely the kind of game he LOST on a regular basis (remember the Lions game???)

  • No protection for Harrington (and no YAC, as usual)
  • No big pass plays
  • No run blocking
  • Pi-s poor run D
  • Ineffective pass rush (Abraham fails to live up to his mouth)
  • AWFUL special teams
  • Our perennial NFL-worst WRs strike again—well done JANKins

Gonna be a long season, and Vick would make little difference, if any.

We’re looking at 3-13, possibly 2008 number one pick. We have so many needs though I’m not sure where to go—QB is the obvious choice but we are in dire need of a legitimate NFL WR (we haven’t had one in nearly a decade now). The O-line is atrocious, and we need a stud LB.

So basically it’s gonna be a long few years…

I missed that 3 or 4 wide receiver set in Petrino’s great aggressive offense make plays. Just like Terry Bradshaw said on the halftime show “Joey being Joey”. Field position was horrible. Does anyone think Falcons is missing Joe Decamilis(special teams coach)and Allen Rossum? There’s nothing to be said about the offensive line(horrible as always). Could the defense stop the run(don’t blame it on Coleman being out)? I hope all you Anti-Vick people now see all the obvious problems that has always plagued the Falcons that Vick had to overcome. Now will everyone please place blame where it officially belongs and give credit where it’s due. They couldn’t even win against a rookie qb who wasn’t that great. The Falcons looked like garbage. Does this horrible showing make the comment that so many stated( 1 player doesn’t make the team)untrue? Was Mr. Blank to embarrassed to show his face on the sideline to encourage his team? Did anyone think about the last time the Falcons played in Minnesota(tell the truth)? Is this how it looks when players play at their highest level(or does it resemble Vick running around making plays)? Is Dunn ok? I’m worried because he was hit so much. Am I the only one worried about facing Julius Peppers(Carolina DE) at the home opener? Once again, where was the aggressive offense? The playmakers? Should Rich McKay have a job next year? Did the defense allow a rookie rb to gain 103 rushing/60 receiving yds? How many sacks did Joey have inside the pocket(6)? Harrington? Receivers? Defense? Offensive line? To many question marks. I predict blacked out halfway through the season.

P.S. I’ll sleep tonight with visions of MV7 running around in my head. The Nike commercials were even bad.

Hard to say if he would have helped in this game but atleast we would have scored. I just realized that it doesn’t matter who the qb is aslong as it wasn’t vick some are happy being miserable! The defense played admirable giving up only 10 points Joey Horrible providing the rest. Anyone who did not see this coming has no clue about football. This team has zero playmakers on offense and Joey does not have the arm strength to run this offense. Signed Ed Hartwell who was a fat injury prone piece of s**t and traded a first rounder for always injured John Abraham. He also has not had a single draft pick that has stuck out as a steal and made terrible picks in MeAngelo Hall and Jamaal Anderson. Hall is a selfish and useless player who talks more than he plays and Anderson should not have been a top 20 pick. At what point will Arthur Blank step forward and admit that he made a mistake with McKay. Oh and how can I forget, this was the guy that hired the pathetic Jim Mora, Greg Knapp, Ed Donatell regime that ruined 3 years of Vick’s prime. Not that I am a Vick fan after what he did, but the guy was talented enough to win consistently and the team was screwed by that atrocious coaching staff. Bottom line is Rich McKay needs some blame here, it’s disgraceful that he escapes criticism.

Clam down people. It was the first game of a new regime. Give Petrino more then one game. Our D played great, and basically the vikings scored on lucky plays. Two real concerns:

  1. Why did we not see more Jerious Norwood

  2. Our Running D was spotty - too many big cut back runs.

At least we threw the ball for more then 110 yards like we did every game with Vick.

This season will be the fault of our own #7. I will see monkeys fly before people realize he screwed us, and not the other way around. He took a huge financial and emotional investment by everyone in Atlanta and flicked us off along the way. If it weren’t for his offseason activities and reported lack of discipline in the locker room, we wouldn’t be faced with a season that was to most everyone (and now some more people as well) a foregone conclusion. Michael Vick bears the responsibility for putting the team, the fans, the franchise in this position. He is not a victim of anything.

And by the way, Warrick Dunn looked like he couldn’t wait to get tackled and be on the ground. In fact, it appears he helped many a Viking defender get him to the ground.

Finally, Schaub is gone. No one can second guess that. Who’s fault is it we traded him because he force-fed an entire city into believing he was the quarterback of our future? That’s gonna be Michael Vick.

Anyway you slice it, the guy is a loser.

Joey proved himself once more, get used to it fans. As a former Chicagoan, who saw those for many years pull for “suck rate-losers” such as the Cubs and Bears, Atlanta’s sports scene appears no different at all. (ie… misery loves company)

Pulling for “lovable losers”, is just as bad as lying to oneself… anyone remember “The Emperor’s New Clothes”? And click your heels twice saying to yourselves “There’s no place like home.” (You’re right) And yes you also can have no heart, no brains and no courage like Petrino and Blank.

The ones saying they don’t need Leftwich, need a labotomy, then gety a life. Get used to it because,(as you should already be) as this will be the Falcon’s future…. Lack lustered, losers. Where’s the backbone people? Get real. Simply put, Falcon’s suck. One man will not make a team.

Hey Woodie, you sound like that idiot T. Moore. How is it a drafting mistake when you draft after a team and have no chance to pick a player already taken? The Falcons will get better over the course of the season. They will be so much better than under Mora/Knapp/Donatell where they got off to a quick start and then faded. Don’t be so quick to give up on the team. Look at the other losers so far this week - Philly at GB, Rams at home, Jets destroyed by Pats, Saints humiliated, Jax at home. It’s a loss on the road, injuries on the d-line, time to get back to work.

I am still going to support the Falcons regardless of whether we get MV7 back or not. JH is not the answer and none of the guys coming out of college next year are not the answer either. But all the people that wanted their “pocket passer” well they got him. Yeah, the Falcons sucked today, but…

To blame it on Petrino is a joke…it’s his first game, and in case you haven’t noticed, this ain’t the New England Patriots he inherited. Give the man a chance. The only problem I have with Petrino is not getting Norwood the touches he deserves…he’s the only playmaker we have—-USE HIM!

To blame it all on Harrington is an easy trap also…maybe he’s gonna suck here just like he has everywhere else he’s been, but in his defense, neither interception was a bad throw; the first was a batted ball that miraculously fell right into the linemans lap—-99% of the time that’s an imcomplete pass. And the second INT was on Jenkins. But he’s gonna have to learn to let go of the ball…you can’t just stand there in the pocket waiting for the sack. But then, maybe that says something about our receivers.

What scares me is our shortcomings at the line of scrimmage. Cause that’s where games are won and lost. When you can’t block and tackle, this is the kind of ugliness you’ll witness.

As far as blackouts…aren’t all the home games already sold out this year?

And yes, it’s going to be a long year.

Thanks longtimeFalcon…. You were correct, no more Vick to cover up defiencies. First everyone was saying that Vick wasn’t the team and they could win without him. Then they turn around and say it’s his fault because he’s not here. Get it together people. I’m with Joseph… RESIGN VICK. I don’t think Mr. Blank was responsible for Vick’s wrongdoing. But he didn’t have to throw him under a bus on 285 either. This is what he gets. Show some appreciation to the man that made your franchise. Vick is an athlete that wins game. Harrington is a QB that loses. I’ll take the winner. If Vick would have had help on defense the last 2 seasons would have been better than 8/8 & 7/9. To NAVIGATOR, Vick wasn’t threatened by Schaub. He had 130 millon reasons to feel secure. If they fix the OL what about the defense. To many problems. Vick hide them. Now everyone can see.

This is a rebuilding year, and aside from running Dunn up the middle a few times against the biggest DT tandem in the league I didn’t think the play-calling was bad. Joey was signed as a backup, and he looked like it. What did you expect? Jenkins needs to #%@& or get off the pot; he’s looking more like a bust every game, and Adam Jennings sure didn’t look like an upgrade over Rossum.

All that said, this team looks to me like it’s got a good coaching staff in place. They played their first game against a team they don’t match up well against in one of the loudest stadiums in the NFL. They looked bad, but there were notes of promise. Give them time to jell, a couple of more drafts to get rid of the remaining stiffs from the Mora regime and I think we’ll have some solid football around here finally. Give them a chance.

The Falcons will get better as the season goes along… let’s not forget that this is the first game in which any of these players are playing under Petrino’s system. Hopefully Norwood gets more touches as the season goes along, since with Vick gone he is the Falcons’ best playmaker. The run defense is a cause for concern, but not having Rod Coleman really hurts — when he gets back it should improve. Yeah, the playoffs are probably out of reach, but I really don’t think the rest of the season is going to be this bad. As Harrington gets more used to the system and some of the young players get some more reps this team will improve.

But still, there’s nothing like a dismal loss and 2 picks returned for a TD to remind us how much we really miss having an animal-killing felon as the face of our franchise, huh? Bring back Vick.

I can’t beleive that the Flacons offense looked worse the Georgia’s. Sub Par college schemes and offensive desgins don’t win in Division 1 college football and especially not in the NFL! Predicition - Petrino will not last three years. After next year he’ll bolt back to college, if the Falcons are lucky he’ll bolt after this year. What a joke the Offensive genius Petrino is now! The Falcons would still lose even if Vick was here so you can’t blame it all on Harrington although he gets most of the blame for his sub-par play today. Looked to me like Bobo and Richt were calling the plays for the falcons today. And Brooking as a middle linebacker is a joke. Brooking is a good guy, good player but he’s no Brian Urlacher. One good thing about not living in the ATL any longer is having to suffer through watching the Falgones lose another one on TV. It must have been painful to all Falcon fans. I too wonder why Norwood is 2nd string? He is obviously the best back on the team, and a breakaway threat every time he touches the ball. Dunn is at best a situational back now…and not a very good one at that either at this stage in his excellent career. And I would check down on every play if I was throwing to the group of receivers the Falcons have…they are terrible! When will Roddy White be released. He is not a starting NFL receiver. Joey Harrington is a nice back up or third string QB, but not a starting NFL QB either. So the Falcons are playing each game without a front line NFL QB (the Houston Texans have one) and wide receivers, plus an over the hill running back. Lots of luck! 2-14 at best. Maybe 1-15. At least they get the #1 pick this year. But I am sure they will screw that up, too.

Why the heck does every blog about the Falcons devolve into a black/white racist argument about Vick? The fact is, he’s gone because of his actions. Harrington looked bad. The offensive line didn’t play well. The running game was nonexistent. The defense didn’t play well. Special teams looked bad. The team let us down this week. They need to make adjustments and hopefully we’ll see a better team next week. I was born in ATL but have lived the last 35+ years in upstate NY. My favorite QB is Steve Bartkowski. Am I a racist? No. He was the first QB who kindled my love for football. My favorite RB is William Andrews for the same reason. KR is Billy “White Shoes” Johnson. What Vick did was reprehensible and stupid. Who in their right mind risks $130 MILLION dollars? If he had spent the same amount of money setting his friends up with a legitimate business he’d be a hero instead of a zero. I loved watching him play. Every game you always felt you had a chance to win. He’s the only one to blame for the trouble he’s in. The owner and team can catch some flack for running interference for him, but he is still responsible. PETA wackos aren’t the only ones who screamed for him to be punished. 80% of the people polled by ESPN thought he should go to jail and be suspended. I’ve been following the Falcons since 1980 and except for a a couple of the David Archer years, I’ve never been truly embarrassed to say I’m a Falcons fan. I am now, not by the team (which was embarrassing in its pathetic loss to Minn) but by the fans. Atlanta is supposed to be a shining example of the best qualities of the south. As a kid, I’d get in fights with the local bully because I was from the south. I was proud to claim to be from Atlanta. Now I read blogs complaining about hillbilly racists and others talking about “not being able to take the projects out of the boy” and I just want to scream. We can’t change anything that has happened because of Vick’s actions. Let’s try to keep the Falcons blogs focused on football.

It’s not about black or white for me. It’s about what’s best. Drafting a new QB is not the answer when the whole team sucks. Vick made it a little bit better. At least watchable. It’s not that the team lost, But how horrible they looked. Who cares about completion % and 3rd downs. The object of the game is to win. That’s the only stst that matters. Please stop making excuses for this TEAM. A least 1 man can get you to .500, can 52 others get the same. At least Vick made us contenders, without any help, all by hisself. Imagine what could have happened if he had help.

ALL of you silly people that are acting and speaking as if this is a racial issue really need to get your facts straight!

All black people do not support Vick! MOST black people obey the law and expect others to do the same! MOST black people who are also Falcons’ fans, understand that this could be a long season that lacks the excitement of previous years. But, we also understand that Vick is where he is by his own doing and that the Falcons don’t owe him a damn thing!

ALL white people are not anti-Vick! Many white people have supported him through this situation!

ALL Falcons’ fans would rather see Vick on the field. But, either way, we’re not bailing on the TEAM! Do any of YOU PEOPLE - Vick Haters and Vick Apologist - even remember that football is a team sport.

GROW UP and quit playing the race card from either side. Somethings are not about black and white, but soley about RIGHT and WRONG!

Vick was WRONG! He let the fans, the team and this city down … PERIOD!

Support the Falcons or support Vick’s Jailbirds team - just support a TEAM!

Look..the falcons looked bad today but if you’re truly a falcons fan you wón’t jump off the bandwagon after the first loss. Petrino is a good coach with a good system it will just take a season or two to get his players in it. Yes Mike Vick probably would have run around today and they might have won, but not having Vick will actually be a good thing in the long run because I would rather have a potential for 10 or 11 wins 08 and 09 than Mike Vick running around making some exciting plays but only winning 7 or 8 wins for the next few seasons. You need a dropback passer to win consistently in this league.

I guess we will have a legitimate shot at McFadden. Take McFaddin, draft a QB and an OT in the second round and move on. While we are at it, give Foster a shot at LT and see what he can do.

It goes against the grain to give up, but let’s be realistic. The Vikings are a weak team and they abused us.

For the white people, Vick is gone forever, for the non-white people, Vick is gone forever. You guys can keep trumping the MVick thing forever, and nothing will change. Vick was not indicted for just dog fighting, but carrying illegal activities across state lines. He took a plea, because the next indictment was for racketeering, and folks that’s a 10-20 year sentence. Why don’t you all talk about what’s wrong with the Falcons now, and it’s not MVick.

BTW - I CERTAINLY don’t condone Vick’s actions or choices. I think that he needed to clean up his personal life and hope that this episode (however harsh) helps him to do that.

I don’t think that Vick would have won this game either - it would have been another Falcon’s loss. What is interesting to me, however, is how many of the same people that say that “it was ALL Vick’s fault” are also mentioning that this team will see no more than 2 or 3 (the most I saw posted was 4) WINS this season, but, in the same breath complain about the mere 7 or 8 per year that Vick provided this team when he was the started that everyone “complained about”. Interesting, don’t you think? Are you telling me that 2-4 “Any other QB wins” are better than 7 or 8 (proven through past performance) wins Vick provided the team in year’s past????? Vick made a difference - not enough to overcome this horrible offensive line, but enough to provide the team with 3-4 EXTRA wins per year; even in the midst of poor play calling on defense AND offense) from a clearly subpar coaching staff.

Fix the offensive line and the run defense and you will have a much better team with (almost) ANY quarterback behind center - even J. Harrington. Especially since, you are likely looking at a coaching staff that will win most of the “CLOSE GAMES” due to their preparation and expertise; something Mora and his staff could not do. Not only that, but I believe that this staff’s expertise is such that they will also be able to (better) recover from mistakes and misques; which was something that Mora’s staff was just flat out NOT able to do. If you look at all of that, this team is in much better shape than even last year. It is early…. and what I am MOST interested in is the difference between how Petrino and Mora make game-to-game adjustments. Anyway…. like I said. It is early and there is a reason they call them “Season Openers”.

Championship Football starts in the trenches. Peyton Manning would have looked terrible with the amount of time Joey had behind the offensive line today. Gany is showing his age and the others can’t hold their blocks long enough for the receivers to get downfield. The defense played well enough to win this game, but the offense was definately out of sinc. Please, Petrino, name Norwood the starter. He hits the holes hard while Dunn seems scared to get hit. Norwoods speed will win you several games this year and take some of the pressure off Joey and the o-line, while Dunn hesitates and dances and causes the defense to charge upfield getting hungrier and hungrier.

I’m not looking forward to next week. Jacksonville’s got hellified defense. Mora’s gone. He didn’t pick the players. The McKay regime is alive and picking. It’s a lot of losers* with **character and class sitting at home watching with us. And if Vick gave up in games it’s because 52 others never tried. Petrino if you happen to read this how about trying to score with 1:14 left in the half. It’s called a 2 minute drill! You win when you out score the opponent. You also don’t give the ball back to the opponent when you’re down by two TD’s late in the game. And please quit trying to rush the ball up the middle on 3rd and long.

This is the NFL and you use every opportunity to keep the ball out of your opponent hands. TOP is as important as field position!

I will start with a question. Did you expect the Falcons to win with Joey Harrington? No, I didn’t. He didn’t win in Detroit or Miami, so what make you think he was going to make a difference in Atlanta? The Falcons should have left Joey Harrington on the wavier wire. The Falcons should have traded Vick last year for the rights to Vince Young. Falcons’ ownership need to face it Michael Vick nor Joey Harrington will never be able to take the Falcons to the next level. Vick has probably played his last game in the NFL. The big mistake was trading Matt Schuab to Houston. The Falcons are in for another losing season. Coach Petrino find you another quarterback because it doesn’t look good at the moment.

Matt Schaub: 225 yards passing, 1 TD, 1 INT. Beats KC (a playoff team) in his first start.

At least Harrington completed 72.5% of his passes. Too bad the offensive line can’t give him more than .2 seconds to throw the ball. That, and the defense gives up 150 yards to a rookie in his first game.

Overall, there was just no energy. That looked like a team that didn’t care whether they won or lost. Just looked like they were going through the motions. Don’t put all the blame on Joey, he has nothing but a bunch of bums (aside from Norwood, Dunn, and Crumpler) around him that don’t come to play. Harrington was the only one out there that looked like he wanted to win.

Rich McKay, you need to hit the free agent markets immediately.

The NFL really should disband the Atlanta Falcons franchise - they are a blight on The Shield.

Michael Vick no longer is employed by the NFL not because of some “racists in Georgia”, but because he was involved in a rather debased criminal enterprise that included, among other things, gambling.

The Falcons lost this game not only because Joey Harrington doesn’t seem to be a quality quarterback in the NFL (nor was Michael Vick, by the way) but because the franchise, as a whole, is pitiful, and Arthur Blank is to blame now, not Rankin Smith.

new coaches, new QB, new system. I understand this is going to be bad, but not this bad. This was unwatchable. Harrington has been in the NFL and on this team long enough to perform better than that. Being on a new team and a new offense is NO excuse for some of those goofy plays.

The other thing is that the people who are complaining about how much Vick ran around learned today why he had to scramble so much. The OL is garbage, and has been for some time now. and the receiving….there are no words for that. Vick may not have won this game behind that O-line, but he would have made it somewhat watchable.

Oh, and i love how the recap written by the associated press and copied by the AJC left out the part where it said the falcons could have used the threat Vick would have posed. i guess the truth hurts to some.

The falcons overall talent level has never been great in the Vick years, however Vick brings the X-factor,which is usual talent the stats can’t track but can at times translate into wins. just like Vince Young, stats are not great but his X factors can bring VICKtories.

Ok they didn’t look real good BUT they are playing like a team. Not MV - and the Falcons. You can already see and get a feel for what Petrino is trying to do and this is the way champions are made. Sure we need a few key players but trhere isn’t any ONE individual to blame for the loss today. Take a look at Chicago. They have a servicable QB, they have good players but they have attitude, they play as a team and they made it to the Super Bowl, even though that QB is just ok. Give it time, we’ll get there. There’s a lot of “criminals” in the NFl, NBA, MLB, on your job, at your church, maybe even your neighbors. Athletes are “human” to. They are not perfect either. Please stop talking about Schaub. You Vick supporters are pathetic. Vick is not playing because he broke the law, you know that thing that is supposed to separate civilized cultures from the others. Michal Vick plead guilty not because of racism, but because he is guilty. It is my belief that if he would have murdered someone, especially a white man, that you would still want to look the other way, after all he plays football and is a black man. It is not the white people who are racists, it is the ones who want to look the other way when federal laws are broken solely because he is a black man. I would venture a guess that the same people who wanted to exonerate Vick wanted to throw Scooter Libby in jail for life for lying to congress. Pathetic.

If Vick gets less than 1 year sentence, we want him back

The Falcons have the same problem they have had for the past several seasons, run blocking. They can not run block. The only reason they lead the league in rushing was with Vick rusing yards. Maybe now that Vick is gone, people will stop hating on him and focus on the real problem. If you fix the O-line the team will be a lot better. The pass protection was good enough and Joey should have thrown away a lot of those sacks but this only points to another problem, which is consistent with the past several years, the receivers can not get open. Jenkins causes the int-TD and Roddy White even fumbled one of his catches out of bounds. The receivers and the run blocking need to be revamped. I kept waiting for the agressive play calling, but never saw any of it. If I remember correctly, we only threw the ball down field deep once. This team needs a lot of upgrades.

Well the same problems we had last year surfaced again today. The Offensive Line is pathetic. Remember Michael Vick as explosive and athletic as he is was sacked 45 times last year. Harrington was sacked 6 today. A couple of times he held onto the ball too long but for the most part he was under pressure. Jenkins is up to his usual tricks. The defense wasn’t that impressive against a suspect Minnesota offense. It’s going to be a long year.

It was always apparent that the Falcons and Vick did not get along, as a team. Now, this year, there are no excuses, the target is gone…let the players show up to play.

For years Vick covered for a sub-average O-line and sub-average receivers. How many times did Vick convert a 3rd down after the play blew up? A hundred? We are in real trouble, fellow-fans. I had been impressed with the way Petrino spoke about what he was doing and intended to do, but there were some real coaching gaffes today: 1) sending Dunn into that D-line of the Vikings long after it had become clear it was gonna get us nowhere; 2) letting Gandy stay in there after he had been beaten, oh, say, about 10 times trying to pass protect; 3) letting Jennings stay in after he fielded a punt on the #$%! 3-yard line (you learn not to do that in GRADE SCHOOL!). Also, Harrington was often too slow either on his read or his release. He knew the blitz was coming, but they didn’t have it worked out how to handle it. This is a major failure. Kicking team breakdowns; stupid penalties like wide receivers false-starting; numb hands on Jenkins at a crucial time (hearing footsteps?); a linebacker crew that got stuffed repeatedly on running plays (Brooking got murdered). Etc. There is no way to fix all these problems. And without a running-threat Q-back, the offense is well below average for the league. That is very sad. I had so much wanted to watch the Falcons this year. But it’s too painful now.

How in the world could Petrino make some of the same stupid mistakes? “Worlds smallest halfback” will never get yards. Joey looked like a deer in the headlights, some veteran. If he could get rid of the ball (to his own teammate), instead of standing around second guessing he might offset having the sorriest O-line in the league a little. Looks really bad for the next few months…

Don’t blame Vick for this disaster today. He is not here. You have your team, pocket passer, and super coach. Deal with it. To ROBC…A person in Congress affects the quality of your life: laws, taxes, healthcare, interest rates, economy, etc. Vick killing dogs didn’t affect the quality of your life one way or the other. It seems to me you are the pathetic one. You need to get better at picking your causes. Choose something a little more worthy of your time. Like getting troops out of Iraq, Healthcare prices, Unemployment. These things will affect you more than someone killing dogs.

The Falcons are going to be pathetic this year. And this just exposes a lot of what was wrong last year.

The O-line was and still is terrible. That’s why, at least with Mike Vick, you had a chance to see him use his feet to get out of bad situations.

The receivers are not very good. I saw a couple of drops this game, too.

With Vick, we had a QB with above average running ability. And he had average or below average accuracy. Now we have a QB with average accuracy, but below average everything else. That is going to make this whole entire average team below average, and then the attendance will become below average, etc. etc…

With the season that the Falcons are going to have, by the end of it most will welcome Vick back to Atlanta. Joey Harrington needs to be his backup. I’m not condoning Vick’s actions, but people will be more forgiving with time and Falcons losses.

Petrino playing call was so sad. Why did we not start by throwing the ball deep??? This would open the run so Harrington could settle down. Petrino is fully to blame with his weak play calling. Use your weapons and open the field! Petrino THROW DOWN THE FIELD!!! Even if it is incomplete they have to guard against it!! Simple NFL ball! Wake up and watch the Pats and Indy and learn something. You can not spread the field by running up the middle or throwing 5 yard passes!

The Bobby Petrino honeymoon is over. A good coach puts together a team that is better than what we saw today. A good coach can get his offense into the red zone, no matter who the players are. A good coach coaches his quarterback well enough to make audible calls before the play clock runs out.
Sorry, I’m not trying to be overly critical, but good coaches can win or at least be competitive with anyone. Look at New Orleans last year.
Just a guess, but Petrino will be gone the year after next.

The racism is absurd - white boy this; rednecks that…

Fact is - the playcalling was too conservative. Wayne Gandy is an absolute joke (why is he the captain?) and Dunn needs to be replaced by Norwood - the only bright star of the day today. At least Roddy White looked decent. Mike Jenkins should be credited with that 2nd TD - that wasn’t Harrington’s fault.

All I have to say is that Harrington has to go. The first play in the game was in indication of what he had to offer. His entire football career has been awful, and I can’t for the life in me understand why the Falcons would have choose him, even as a 3rd string QB. The Falcons really should be looking at another option, because Harrington won’t cut the cheese.

Con Vick is a gutless punk who quit on his teammates, his fans, and his coach. He made fools out of everybody. Harrington’s here and trying his best. He was never suppossed to be the starter. Vick might still be here if he would have spent more time with his playbook rather than his posse. Maybe then he would have been allowed to audible. You can’t audible what you don’t understand. I feel the Falcons need to clean house and start over.

Mine as well as the whole CITYS worst nightmare just got realized. An ablsouletly BAD start tp the season. Guys lets break it down. First and foremost there was very poor game planning from Coach Petrino. Weapons that we have on this TEAM (Jerious Norwood), with each coaching staff in this city always get misused or not at all. As much as I like Dunn this coaches have to finally realize we need a brusing back that can attack and find HOLES. (concidently our defence just made Adran Peterson look like Barry sanders.) Very poor job with the O-LINE, and also proves yet again that our defensive coordinator Zimmer didnt not have any clue on how to control the Blitzes or even worse adjust to them . Finally Joey. Eeverything that happened wasnt his fault and but unfortuetly we need a new QB….and we need one NOW !! He doesnt have even the essential skills working. Recivers with the exception of laurent and Alge are the Achilles Hill of this team. We had penalties that were absloutely crazy. Brought Reves/Mora nightmares to me. Where in the world was our MUCH HYPED HORN ??? Does anybody know. What a SHAME we have to be subjected to this again. I will support them but THEY have to get better. Is is Time that SOMEBODY hold Rich Mckay finally responsible for the HORRENDOUS talent in this team for the last few YRS !!!

Its beginning to look a lot like the 1980’s at the Georgia Dome. (Incidentally, congrats to Matt Schaub/the Texans for a decisive win today). Its pretty clear the Falcons are all but washed up. Truthfully, it wasn’t great with Vick there. With him gone, and no suitable or reasonably talented replacement available, I think we may muster 3-13 at the end of the season. Note to Arthur Blank: The metro Atlanta fans are pretty sick of this charade. What on God’s green earth wee you thinking when you got Harrington? He’s not even a has-been; he lacks any mobile ability and foresight. I have seen better quarterbacking in 3rd grade touch-football games. Please do not allow us the indignity of having to watch this man throw INT ater INT and then suffer a dozen or so sacks each game for the remainder of the season. Get rid of him! Now! Perhaps the coach too. The Falcons have enough money and influence to get good talent out there on that field-make it happen. The fans will not continue to indulge this shamefulness. Contrary to what has been said, Falcons fans are proud people representing a very proud city and we are not afraid to show our support where it counts: financially. Expect less Falcons memorabilia to sell at a premuim and get used to empty seats at the Dome until you get this sham together Mr. Blank.

In the preseason, didn’t you Mike Vick haters say that Harrington would be fine, Petrino is an Offensive genius, the O-line has beefed up and it’s time for the receivers to make plays?

Sad, Pitiful, Pathetic, Abmysl, Embarrassing, damn I can go on and on when describing today’s game. This team isn’t ready and it showed today. Joey Harrington is 1-9 against the Vikings and he’s thrown 16 count em people 16 INT’s in his career to the Vikings. The Vikings is a mediocre team at best and there was absolutely NO EXCUSE why we shouldnt have mopped the floor with their azzes today NONE! This is a 3 or 4 win team at best, Joey looked scared. Pressure Joey and the game is OVER! Damn I thought it didnt take much to get MV rattled but Joey changed my mind. And to think we face Jacksonville next week and their defense is even better than the Vikings. This team needs to be gutted and rebuilt the RIGHT WAY! I’m willing to go through 2 or 3 more losing season as long as I see some foward progress. It’s time to rebuild and it’s time to start right now. Bench Harrington sign Rattay and let’s see what happens..

We’re in for a long year people and Atlanta is officially on the clock, let’s just hope this pick will be a step in the right direction for a brighter future.

I have to admit that the loss cannot be blamed solely on the Harrington, but jeez, I counted at least 3 attempts where he could’ve easily gotten rid of the ball and not taken a sack. The guy looks pathetic when there is even a little bit of pressure. But then there is the other side of the argument, Vick would’ve likely run out of the pocket immediately, fumbled the ball a couple of times, but maybe he would’ve broken one and gotten us inside 25 at least once. So there lies the talent of this team: Harrington = Joke Vick = Mediocre

Great job Falcons!!! By the way, a decent job by the defense. Hopefully we won’t allow 14 pts. by our offense every week.

Well you bandwagon fans got exactly what you wanted. A pocket qb who can see over the o line. For years people said that Vick is too short to see over the o line, cant read defenses, and makes horrible decisions. Well I guess the pocket passer Harrington who can see over the line is a step in the right direction ha ha ha ha ha. Im loving it only because people blamed Vick for every problem this team had. Tonya summed it up perfectly. People expected Vick to break off big runs, block for himself, catch his passes, play some defense and pass out gatorade. People will finally see as others have mentioned that Vick had little help on this team. Dunn is a nice guy but he is not the answer. Keith Brooking is still jumping on the pile after the tackle has been made and being blown off the line. This guy makes tackles but no game changing plays. We got no pressure what so ever on a inexperienced qb. To tell you the truth, if we play a team with an experienced qb today the score would have been 50 to 3 because the Vikings qb missed on a lot of throws where the wr’s were wide open. Please get rid of Michael Jenkins. This guy dropped another 2 passes today. Joe Horn did nothing. Please stop blaming Vick because he is no longer here. I dont want to hear about the poor o line and etc because these are the same issues Vick had been dealing with but people did not want to put the blame on the proper players only on Vick. Joey has to struggle with a terrible o line, poor wr’s and etc so he can see what VICK has had to work with the last few years. But hey you guys got your pocket qb so deal with it. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
