White to start, Coleman uncertain

I’m pressed for time today (I have to finish up some articles and get to my son’s freshman football game - Go Central Gwinnett!) but there were some developments with the Falcons today.

Third year wide out Roddy White will start at wide receiver Sunday opposite Joe Horn. White has been working in this role for part of preseason after the coaching staff felt Michael Jenkins was better off working from the slot.

The Falcons use a variety of formations so it’s hard to say who actually will get the heavy dosage of reps associated with being a starter, but when the Falcons go two-wide, it will be Horn and White. Jenkins and rookie Laurent Robinson will form a four-wide rotation. Adam Jennings will be the No. 5 wide receiver.

Tight end Alge Crumpler did not participate in any football drills at practice to rest his surgically repaired left knee. The Falcons plan to manage Crumpler’s workload in order to preserve him over the course of the season.

Coach Bobby Petrino said he is still unsure whether defensive tackle Rod Coleman (recovering from thigh surgery) will play Sunday. His health and effectiveness are being monitored but Petrino said the team does not want to limit his effectiveness over the long haul for the short-term gain of having him available for situational play against the Vikings.

Do not despair all you Doubting Thomases. The Falcons will have a good season and this is redemption year for Joey.

I know the offense will be great and our wides will be vindicated. Joey will find an average of 6-8 receivers each game. Defenses will be tearing their hair out as Bobby “Houdini” Petrino will be confusing them.

My only concern is that we gave up a few big plays in the preseason and some special teams lapses. I know we may have had the second string on but that is what depth is all about. You should not lose a step when your first-stringers are off the field.

Get on the bandwaggon before it’s too late. By mid-season I’ll be in scalpers heaven as the waggonists come pouring in. Seats will be at a premium then!!!

Minny first? 1 & 0….Next!!!!!

Nuff Respect!!!!

Go Falcons!!!

Steve,

How would have Finneran fit in with this system?

Where does his future lie, with the Falcons or 680 The Fan? Seems he has adapted pretty well to the change in professions.

Man these Falcons are going to surprise
the heck out of everybody. We have a good team all around and I think the only thing we have to do is come together as a team that is under new leadership. As a team they will do well they have the weapons. GO FALCONS!!!

Hi Y’all! Here’s to you, Roddy White. I hope that all the ‘dropped’ balls become ‘caught’ balls. Good luck this year.

I have been telling my friends for weeks now to get on the Falcons bandwagon. There is plenty of room and you can get prime seating while still available. Don’t believe the naysayers! The offense will be better than last year. The biggest question mark on this year’s team is the run defense. If we can be decent against the run then this will be a playoff team.

Thanks for the info Steve. Snelling is on the practice squad with that last spot, so all draft picks will be around the team.

My new question…do we have 53 guys now and have to cut one to get a 3rd QB or do we have only 52 guys? Are we hoping the ‘skins cut Brunell so we don’t have to trade for him?

Will D Hall get a contract extension before or during the season?

I am worried about the Vikes D and their rook RB, but feel we have a good shot to win. Sunday should be fun, FOOTBALL IS BACK!

The Falcons will be 5-2 by the time we have our bye-week. The offense will move alot better than usual. The defense will be solid as usual. However I do think we still won’t make the playoffs, and I think we end the season 9-7. Simply because our second half schedule is a lot tougher than the 1st.

I will miss the excitement MV7 brings, but there is football after MV7, and I am a huge MV7 fan, but I am a bigger Falcon fan.

An ESPN article said that the Falcons are the team most likely to go winless this season. Let’s prove them wrong!

I’m all for the new blood and hope in the system, but Roddy White was unable to catch a cold. What’s been the change in him?

I feel it in my bones that all the nay sayers are going to have to eat crow at the end of the season. I’m not saying that the birds are going to the Super Bowl but I have a gut feeling that they just may fool a lot of these so called “Experts”. After all wasn’t it some of these same “Experts” that had Michigan at No# 5 and had left Georgia Tech out of the top 25? I have confidence in these guys and coach Patrino. GO FALCONS!!

So many questions. How long will Roddy (Dropsy) hang on to his starter status? Depends on how well he catches and hangs on to the football. Has Horn been quiet on the field this pre-season by design and will he emerge now that it counts or did N.O. release him for good reason? Will Williams meet the challenge at FS or get exposed? Will Harrington be at least as competent as he’s been this pre-season? Can our O-line open holes against the Vikings stout run D big enough for Dunn and Norwood to squeeze through? Will Abraham shoot his wad in the opener and get injured or lay back too much to save himself for the long haul making him somewhat ineffective? Where is that balance and will he find it? Is Grady game ready and will the rest of the D-line gel, especially without Coleman? Will D. Hall get burned for a huge play or two. Let’s hope my paranoia is just that. We’ll see Sunday. GO FALCONS

I don’t think McKay has anything to do with who the coach plays. They didn’t hesistate to cut Jordan Beck (well, they did hesistate, but I think they were trying to trade him) who was a third round pick. They cut Edge, a huge mistake. They cut Peerless another huge mistake. I think starting Roddy has more to do with giving Robinson more time to develop, especially given the fact that he was hurt the last few games of the preseason.

I think the Falcons have a good chance to start the season 2-2.

I love hearing all these prognosticators discussing how bad the Falcons are going to be this year. Don’t you know that Petrino and his staff has to love this too. I mean, they have enough bulletin board material to fill a truck right now.

If this pre-season is any indication, Petrino will have this team ready to play come game day and if Minnesota is reading what most sports writers are spewing out and believing it…they’re in for a rough Sunday afternoon.

The sad part about this is Petrino’s going to have the Falcons doing so well that there’s no chance of me moving closer to the 50 with my season tickets next year.

Congratz Roddy—-you deserve this spotlight, now play like the draft pick you are I have been on you since the horrific Saints blunder last year, but you have shown me a lot since. Have a great game at the baggy dome!

Coach Petrino seemed fairly somber when talking about the condition of Crocker, Coleman, and Crump. Or was that an early ‘game face’ from coach?

I’m a lot less worried about Roddy than I am with regards to the state of our defense.

So what stands in the way of the activation of Montavious Stanley?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

There’s NO WAY Jenkins could have looked THAT bad this summer… Roddy shouldn’t even be in the league!!

Am I the only one who watched him drop multiple passes AGAIN this preseason—one of which went straight through his hands in THE END ZONE? And I don’t even need to get into his atrocious pass-dropping performance that was last season…

Bobby—please, please PLEASE come to your senses… this kid is garbage!!!

I hope the Falcons do well, but why in the hell would they start Roddy White when he consistently drops balls in crucial situations like 3rd down, TD’s etc. He shouldn’t even be on the team, and starting him is laughable. I’m a huge Falcon fan but I try to keep my expectations realistic and playoffs are not likely. Defense not strong enough and losing Mike Vick and replacing him with Joey Harrington is a huge downgrade. If we are able to compete, and win more than 5 games,I think Petrino should be named coach of the year.
