It’s showtime! (Well, sort of)

So, Falcons fans, you’ll get your first look at the team tonight when they face the New York Jets in an exhibition game. What interests you most about the game? How much emphasis will be put on Michael Vick’s absence? How many snaps do you think Joey Harrington will take? Are you excited about watching Jerious Norwood run the ball? What’s the defense going to be like without Rod Coleman? Will Bobby Petrino have his team ready to execute the new system? And when the Jets fans play “Who Let the Dogs Out” — and you know they will — will you boo the television screen or sing along?

I wanna see Harrington and DJ, pure and simple. This is the preseason. Nothing matters. The Colts got beat by Dallas last night. Peyton Manning played a series. Who cares about preseason? I wanna see how DJ plays in these first two preseason games, and then in the last one. We’ll get a good idea about Harrington in the third game, which the starting QBs usually play the first half.

I want to see what DJ can do…the other two are retreads!!! It’ll take Shockley for the Falcons and this city to move on without Vick. He has the biggest arm, most speed, and he’s an Atlantian.

can’t wait for the game! i read joey is playing 10-12 snaps. i am interested in the #2 QB, jimmy williams, our backup DT and chris houston the most. also seeing jason snelling run, since dunn is injured he could see some time somewhere during the season. i’m just ready to start the season, i have no expectations either good or bad. as far as i’m concerned the falcons have a clean slate going into this year!

Looking forward to see Shock in a “real” game situation. DJ has some good tools but I don’t think there is a chance he will start. Maybe later on in the season if Harrington doesn’t come through. Norwood definately excites me but he can’t take those hits that he took last year, however he has bulked up some. Hopefully we can make it through preseason with no injuries as we don’t have much depth. I haven’t been this pumped about preseason games in my life. GO BIRDS!

I also want to see what DJ and the rook receiver Robinson can do.

However, I don’t understand why Harrington will only play for a series or so when he NEEDS THE WORK in this system under game conditions.

I really hope DJ gets to have at least a quarter or more to showcase his stuff. Redman is decent and I believe joey’s making strides but I’ve been a fan of DJ since his highschool days. Here’s hoping he makes the most of the opportunity. I will be glued all preseason with both eyes and ears. Go Birds!!!!

I agree with you Zach. I think that the QB position should have been open for competition from the beginning. DJ Shockley is a good QB. He is a good leader and possesses some of the same attributes as Vick. Why not coach the dude up and let him start? He is a duel threat just like Vick. He will make this running game go, just like Vick. I think there will be a QB controversy in Atlanta come Sat. morning. Bookmark this entry.

Here’s my take on the QB matter. Harrington was given the starting job because Petrino is a man that relishes a challenge. His entire success has been predicated on that fact. Therefore, he sees Harrington, much like MVick, as a challenge. Both QB’s have numerous critics who question their abilities, although for different reasons. He took the job primarily because of MVick. If he could do for MVick and the Falcons what he did for Louisville, he’d be considered a Hall of fame NFL headcoach.

Since MVick is no longer available(for reasons of sheer stupidity), Joey Harrington is now his new project. If Petrino doesn’t acquire another veteran QB, it means he is very confident with D.J. Shockey’s progress and abilities. Make no mistake, D.J. is the real future, not Redman. But, you have to remember, he has been a starter only one season since leaving high school. That’s not much experience to fall back on. And despite the dillusional mentalities of UGA fans concerning UGA players, the very conservative football program has a lousy track record when it comes to producing NFL quality QB’s. Since Fran Tarkentan, how many UGA QB’s have ever started, or even had a memorable career as backups in the NFL?

I’m looking forward to the game, mainly to watch Shockly and Norwood. I also really want to see how both lines are looking in their respective rebuilding phases, and take a peek at the new secondary. And the recieving corps. Hell, everything, I guess; I’m starved for football and looking forward to the Petrino era. Nobody should ever have to go through a Knapp-led offense. I pity the Raiders.

Mr. Strickland, I will continue with my delusions about Shockley, if you don’t mind. WOOF WOOF WOOF

THIS PRE-SEASON IS VERRRRY IMPORTANT I’m looking forward to seeing how Joey will conduct this offense……Petrino is a great coach & I believe the keys to our success this year will lie with # 11.

Other things to look for throughout the pre-season.

1) Offensive line: new blocking scheme. How well will it protect Joey & provide room for the run. 2) D Line: Can Abraham stay healthy? How well will Anderson compliment # 55? Evaluate the backups. 3) CB battle: Go Houston….We need to improve our secondary & take some pressure from D Hall 4) WRs….Rookie Laurent Robinson, Horn, Jenkins, White. They’ve had an impressive camp, can they execute in games.

Go Birds….I know we’ll have a great season & playoff contenders. I know I’m reaching

I don’t care that Vick isn’t there. I think that the lightning rod that is Mike Vick hurt the team chemistry because no one player is bigger than the team. That being said I am excited to see what Petrino has to offer. Smash Mouth Football….finally we get it here in Atlanta. I was so sick of this stretch play, zone blocking, running QB, circus act BS that we have seen the last few years. Why do the Bears, Pats, Steelers, Colts, and Ravens win? Because they line up and pound you to death. Thank you coach Petrino for moving the Falcons in the right direction.

Why couldn’t we have opened the quarterback competition up? Joey Harrington wins by default - he is more skilled and far more experience. Petrino could have wasted time running Shockley and Redman (remember? Shockley hasn’t even clinched the BACKUP job yet) with the first team offense. Except that his job isn’t to appease UGA fans or Shockley fans or even DJ himself. Petrino’s job is to prepare for the season. And in order to best prepare for the season, he has to make sure that the brand new quarterback gets as many reps as possible with a brand new offense and a brand new playbook. It’s not as if there’s no harm in an “open quarterback competition”, as is being suggested. People act as if DJ were a top pick, but he was picked in the seventh round, and looked at by a number of teams as an undrafted free agent to play wide receiver for a very good reason.

FACT: Last year Miami Dolphins 1st pre-season game Joey Harrington came off the bench and fired a TD his first pass as a Dolphin. BAM!! Another little fact - Joey Harrington in 2006 threw for over 200 yards in ONE quarter - a frantic 4th Quarter comeback Dolphins VS the Jets. Kicker Olindo Mare missed the kick to tie.

I hope all three quarterbacks get a fair shot at being the starter and the best performer gets the gig. Maybe we’ll finally see whether our much maligned receivers are really as bad as the rap they have been given, or if MV7 and his erratic passing was the main problem. In any case, I’m glad that Knapp and his fractured version of the west-coast offense are out of here (why the hell didn’t he ever throw to the running backs?), and a new system that emphasizes a down field passing attack is in place. Go Birds!….we might not be as bad as most people think we’ll be (but hell, its the Falcons so they probably will be).

JMar, I’m not suggesting that Shockley be annointed … and I understand your point about possibly wasting time with someone not as proven. But it’s not as if Harrington is the second coming of Joe Willie Namath. I’d just like to see Shockley get a fair shot … and if I had my druthers … I’d like to see him as the starter. Yeah I’m pulling for anything even associated with UGA … but don’t take that to mean that I wouldn’t want the Birds to start the best player possible. I just want the kid to get a fair shot!

Let me start by saying I am a season ticket holder and native of Atlanta; I’m also a UGA football fan. However, if Shockley were in any other pro football city, there would not not be so much attention or consideration to him as the starter for the Falcons. There is a reason why he had to wait three years at UGA to become the starter. Harrington is QB1 - hands down!

Have we forgotten Quincy Carter and the glory days at Dallas? DJ will get his chance, to make 2nd string, a stretch goal for him. Offensive Line: Stats lie. We ran for a lot of yards between the twenties, thanks to Vick’s legs. Scoring rushing TD’s are much more important than leading the league in rushing stats.

The secondary: Can we please defend the pass in the middle of the field?

really looking forward to seeing Shockley shock ‘em! Put DJ in and don’t take him out.

I truly believe Shockley has the raw talent (speed, arm, QB smarts)and he is the exact type of person we want leading this team. DJ Shockley should become our great “franchise” player.

I’m willing to bet the Falcons might also be suprised about how many local ticket sales they might make going with a local and a UGA star. We saw how the dome reacted last preseason when Shockley came in and led the team down the field with ease to score.

If we drafted more local talent, you’d attract more fans who could otherwise care less about Pro ball if it wasn’t for their fantasy leagues.

It’s nice to see that everyone has given up on Vick…guess what though. Your opinions don’t matter. You all are just a bunch of idiots trying to get your infantile words across to a bunch of people just like you. You all say the same thing whether you support Vick or not, whether you are racist or not. Game time will tell who the quarterback will be, the commisioner is a jack a* and not in Michael Vicks case. I guess you guys don’t know that since you can’t read a paper to realize what he says and what he does are two different things. He is a hypocrit and a showboat who is bad for football. If the owner of a team decides how to treat it’s players and if the punishment is just based on his rules why does he step in and go beyond that punishment. If a player is suspended for a year and wants to get reinstated into the league for a year without another confrontation why not let the person back into the league? Oh but you were going to let Packman back in if he had good behavior. Give me a break. All of this is not Vicks or Odels fault, Roger Goodell deserves a big chunk of the blame too. You all thing Blank was upset just because of Vick? You obviously don’t realize that Roger steps on Blanks toes, ego, and the Falcons organization with his tactics. So while you are all supporting Vick or not realize who the real culprit is in the NFL. Oh and for all you who have and will defend Goodell after this post…Go tell it to Peta!

There is so much in doubt right now, that it is hard to list all the things I want to see tonight. The most important thing is NO INJURIES. Norwood, ALL THE QB’s, the O-Line and the defense all deserve attention. So much uncertainity, so little time.

I don’t think we will see a lot of the “new offense” since it is early in the preseason, and Coach P. doesn’t sound like the kind of guy to show too much too early.

All that being said, it’s great to have football back. GO BIRDS.

You UGA fans are drinking the Kool Aid thinking DJ is the saviour at QB. Give me a break! Just because he played at UGA doesnt make him good.

A lot of fans still support Michael Vick. I’m one of those. I am very disappointed in the choices that he made but come on not letting him play and his trial is not until January. Atlanta sports fans are the worst fans I have every seen. It is quite obvious that ticket sales are hurting.

Whoa -

Easy, Fred.

I happen to be a white dude and I want Shockley in there just as much as anybody.
Shockley is a great QB and I believe a great leader. I have followed his career since college and I have nothing but great things to say and think about this guy. I don’t care if he’s purple… and I really don’t think anyone else on this blog gives a hoot what color he is…except you, obviously.

Rod…are you just plain stupid or plain ignorant? Blank will decide who should be the starter based on how many people wear #3 jerseys. I can hear it now..Blank tells Petrino to bench Harrington because he noticed that more people (blacks) are wearing DJ’s jersey. That some might fine thinking Ron! I bet you still think OJ was framed..right?

Hey J. Brooks…please explain to me just exactly what qualifies DJ as a “great QB”! I guess thats why the Falcons drafted him in the LAST round. I guess thats why no other NFL team grabbed him in earlier rounds, huh? If you followed his career in college, you will know that he only got playing time after Greene left and that was for 1 year. So get off the crack-pipe and come back to reality-ville! He is not a GREAT QB..he could be someday…but today ain’t the day!!

Most people dont care what color the QB is. The racist comments from both sides sadly stick out more thats all. The majority have their heads in the right place.

Fred G Sanford. It’s not about the color of the QB, at least for me. Harrington just isn’t the guy in my opinion. With Vick, no matter what our last 2 seasons were, we were still at least in CONTENTION. Cmon Atlanta, lets band together for once and pull for Vick. Let’s save what little sports pride, which is very little, we have left. I thought this city wanted to win! Vick wasn’t perfect as people expected him to be, but we were always right there. If the recievers didn’t drop so many passes, it would have been a different, those dropped passes were devastating, we were in position to win those games, which puts us in the playoffs. I’m tired of all this racism in this f-ing city.

I am not looking forward to the Falcons without Vick. It’s sad that all of his teamates have turned their backs on him, even his go-to man Mr. Crumpler. Regardless of what was in the indictment, Vick is still a part of the team, was a teamate of most of these guys and won many of the games for the Falcons - Carolina Panthers game when he practically flew into the endzone; the overtime game in Minnesota and countless more. And now they want to run around camp like it’s Michael Who? It’s disgusting. I guess the Falcons have forbid them from saying the V-word. They should show some guts and atleast be in the guy’s corner until his day in court. The game goes on, sure, but I would not want to be on a team of backstabbers - LOSERS!!!!!!

I don’t think Harrington will be great, but I think he can be better than he was in Detroit or Miami under Petrino’s system. I’m looking forward to seeing how well the re-worked offensive line protects him in the pocket, especially now that they don’t have to run the idiotic blocking schemes of Alex Gibbs and Greg Knapp. I’d like to see how well Jimmy Williams is picking up the free safety position, and if the young guys on the D-line (Jamaal Anderson, Tommy Jackson, Trey Lewis) are anywhere near contributing regularly. QB, FS, and the lines are probably the key areas to watch in the preseason.

Also, who is this fake-a* clown using my name on this blog? Since when do I end my messages with “Davenpoop out”?

It’s hard for me to believe that jimmy williams beat out Shock for the #2 job. I just hope Petrino does the right thing and puts the best QB in the game. If it’s obvious that Shock’s better and Petrino plays Harrington & Williams instead of DJ, well, that just make the Falcons the ‘same ole Falcons’ as always, and I won’t be pulling for them. Play the best man. Don’t play Harrington because you’re paying him more, and don’t play Williams because you used to coach him. If you do it for those reasons, the Falcons will be losers, as usual, and DJ will go somewhere else.

Will someone please tell me how well Petrino did his first year? Plus, the NFL is a lot different…Faster and Stronger.

I’ll read about the game tommorrow on the NFL website.

Let DJ play!! Plan and simple…this is his time. I remember when this young man was a kid when I ran track at North Clayton Sr. High, being coach by his father, Mr. Donald Shockley,Sr.!! We are so proud of him!! Go get’em DJ!!

J. Brooks…what university did you get your Psychology degree from? I do not have anger issues you moron. I am just sick and tired of all the blacks jumping on the race bandwagon now that their boy Vick has been proven to be nothing but a THUG! He is NOT an NFL caliber QB. Yes, he was exciting at first but defenses figured him out. Now he is just another rich thug that is probably washed up in sports. Good riddance..why don’t you let me know what university you got that degree from?

It just really ponders me during this hole ordeal how DJ Shockleys name has not been mentioned. Their have been various reports that I have listened to that DJ is mentioned as the third string Qb. I would really like to see him get a shot with a level playing field. He truly deserves this.

GRINCH, no problems. I wouldn’t expect you to feel any differently. That’s what being a true fan is all about my friend.

59BULLDOG, you must consider there are decades separating the Tarkenton era from today. The fact you could only come up with 2 names, known mostly to UGA fans, really proves my point. I didn’t intend to rile anyone with my statement, but the truth is the truth. When it comes to RB’s, UGA is in a class by itself.

Our DEF, not Joey Harrington, will determine the success or failure of the Falcons(see the Chicago Bears). The Falcons DEF won’t be as talented or dominant as the Bears DEF, but our OFF is more talented.
