Rookie safety Stone signs
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In developments with the Falcons, rookie safety Daren Stone signed a four-year deal over the weekend. Stone, who played at Maine, is an intriguing prospect, because he is off the charts athletically but he needs to refine his game.
The Falcons have him listed as a free safety but he also could be worked at strong safety. He is expected to help on special teams but if he develops quickly enough, he has the size and tools to possible see some spot duty.
It’s been pretty slow otherwise. Players have finished offseason workouts and have gone on vacation, as have coaches, managers and owners.
Not everyone’s away, though. Some of the Falcons’ brass is working to sign more of their draft picks over the next few days.
With the down time, some players have been staging community service events. Cornerback Allen Rossum continues his push to youth fitness in the area and recently held an event through his foundation.
Several other players, including quarterback D.J. Shockley, fullback Ovie Mughelli and Eagles linebacker Takeo Spikes helped at a youth camp in Roswell.
As for the latest with the dogfighting investigation at a property owned by Michael Vick — federal agents searched the Virginia property Friday for a second time — signs are that there won’t be any resolution before training camp begins July 26.

This is the same guy who was jumping over cars???
I hope he plays with the same intensity and is successful in it like he did the cars..
P.S. Is there a reason that your boy,Jeff Schultz and your paper only go after negative news about Mike Vick????
And not the positive stories??? Like the Docs u even put in PDF form about the property search??
Not the,”Mike has been here working hard” Petrino qoutes, but all of the other breaking news,on how he is not gonna be charged..
I see no print up about the inside scoop(and don’t act like u guys don’t print it up because u do,especially all of the negative stuff) that people like Chris Mortenson has reported on, in your AJC paper???Why not??
I mean u guys had all kinds of credible sources..All the blogs..Your friends..Other Vick Haters..
He had great sources (Mr.Mortenson)..The Atlanta Falcons, and the NFL..They were both told that Vick will not face any charges..
Whats the deal????

Michael Vick Will Not Be Indicted: Shhhhhhhh!
BY D.K. Wilson
Michael Vick will not be indicted in the dog fighting flap. That’s bad news for the machine that invested so much time and money manipulating news to give the appearance that Vick is just a low-life “N” - oops, “thug” - who has a list of maleficent acts rivaling that of Adam Jones. You know who you are and you know you made that statement on national television.
Then, there are the bloggers, the independent writers without contracts demanding exclusivity. When the Vick story broke and then early on when the whitecaps were breaking harshly all around Vick’s head, you were fighting to break any negative news you could find. You were so very proud to provide your redneck, racist readers with links to your prior stories so that they could walk in your shoes; so you could smirk along with the big boys, hoping that on Vick’s back you might rub shoulders with the sports writing hoi polloi. But yesterday you wrote that curt little three-paragraph thing; one paragraph was a quote. And with your second written paragraph you’re still on the Vick is guilty tip.
What happened to all the links with the damning evidence, blogger boy? All the links to prior writings and opinion pieces? Remember, you used Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports instead of Virginian -Pilot reports for your information. There’s no indictment forthcoming - there is no, “if it turns out to be true.”
What’s up with the columnist who, to this day, says Vick is guilty; just said it Friday on national television? You and your co-worker, you know, your buddy with the same name as a former NFL QB and Super Bowl head coach. Neither of you had the guts to quote from the Virginian-Pilot. You paraphrased quotes from the Commonwealth Attorney Gerald Poindexter just so you could manipulate his image to make him appear like a black man pandering to the black athlete - all for your white readership.
Every column you wrote condemned Vick and Falcons owner Arthur Blank for keeping Vick in Atlanta. Every column, you used your buddy’s manipulated half-truths to position yourself one the side of white - I mean, right. But the whole time you pontificated on Vick’s n**** - damn, I did it again, I meant “thugness” - in your paper and when you guested on television, you were wrong - same with your half-truth writin’ boy.
Who’s burning in Rome now? Bojanglers.
I know all you who wanted Vick to be guilty so much that you salivated at the thought of him standing before a judge and being sentenced. Now, all of you are using the O.J. excuse: Well Vick has enough money and powerful enough lawyers to get out of this.
What the ——?! Michael Vick isn’t Scooter Libby! Do you really think Vick was somehow able to influence these people who so badly wanted him indicted?
Suddenly, to all you “let’s hang Michael Vick” people, Surry County, Virginia, along with the entire Tidewater area of Virginia, is “Michael Vick country”… as if he’s Boss Hogg and has the police and the prosecutors in his wallet pocket; like Vick came back and greased some palms.
Aren’t you the same people who scream, “There couldn’t be a conspiracy! Look at how many people would have to be involved for there to be a conspiracy!”
Let’s use your own argument and see how it holds water in the case of Michael Vick: well, he’d have to pay off the Commonwealth attorney and his assistants, he’d have to pay off the judges, he’d have to pay off the police, he’d have to pay off the myriad USDA investigators who fit into a dozen cars, plus the person who drove the U-Haul.
What’d he do? Promise them all Atlanta Falcons season tickets? Did he go all Capitol Hill lobbyist on these good, God-fearing Americans and send them on vacation junkets on yachts? Do they suddenly have Swiss bank accounts?
Oh yeah, and where has the Humane Society been? They’re quiet as church mice; same with that congressman from California praying for some bi-partisan love.
Fools.
Where is the infamous “Mr. Mumbles” of Outside the Lines lore? He was the man, the informant who was going to put Michael Vick in prison because Vick was a high-roller. Remember, he was the dude who said that, while in college, Vick dropped at least $5,000 on dog fights; brought his own dog, too. Remember, it takes about $5,000 to care for the dog. It also costs around $5,000 to buy a good fighting dog. That’s a lot of dollars for a college student. Oh, but I forgot, Michael Vick was getting paid NFL dollars to play for Virginia Tech - right?
Where are those felons wallowing in the prison in South Carolina? You know exactly who I’m talking about. The two fellas who said they would testify against Vick because they knew he had fighting dogs - right?
I know I was one of the few people who consistently reported the facts of the case. And the facts did not add up to Vick being indicted for anything. The facts did not show Michael Vick knew about dog fighting on that property. The facts did not show that Vick participated in dog fighting anywhere.
This is not about your opinions. That means you: television talking heads, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution black race-baiters, the blogger without the guts to give the same treatment to Vick’s innocence that you did when you were blissfully awash in the Vick-is-guilty public sentiment, and the guy with the whiny voice who said the Surry County prosecutor was “playing the race card” when questioning the USDA investigators’ motives relative to their attempting to indict Vick.
We’re talking about facts.
And you have the nerve to say this isn’t about race.
When each and every one of you writes to me and apologizes for all the crap you wrote - and said - about Vick, then I’ll consider that perhaps this isn’t about race.
But you won’t - and it is.
I like this because he calls it like it is, and calls out your boys and your paper!!

I would like to be the first to commend Allen Rossum on holding fitness camps during the summer. It puts a spin on all of the negative publicity caused by recent off field events. I’m not too sure if there are other players besides Rossum doing things for the community but it would be nice to hear about the guys who are doing service in the community. It touches my heart when we see the Falcons do more community service. I know this will be a hidden post but I want to tip my hat to Rossum and the other Falcons who are trying to sy that the Falcons are more than a bunch troublemkers….

So who handles the contract stuff while Rich is away…who is No. 2, Devaney?

I may be wrong but there seems to be something sinister afoot at the AJC because it seems to relax its tirades on whites but unleashes its full fury on blacks. When a rape occurred at a white player’s home (while he was there) that had to be reported but was some silenced. When a former white player and current sportscaster gets arrested on drug and weapon charges it is not even reported. What am I missing? Is AJC the Atlanta Journal Conundrum for whites and the Atlanta Journal Castigation for blacks?

The AJC is terrible!! They need to applogize to Vick. 4 days after the federal filings, in which Vick was not implicated, the only thing they say about Vick is an article saying his “Contract is not Binding”.
After crucifying him for months, and all but accusing him of being the ring leader in the Dog fighting world, they say nothing now…WOW! Is that journalism?
If there was ever a case for a need of a 2nd paper AJC is making a great case. At one point, I remember counting 12 articles in the Falcons section of the AJC with regard to Vick and dog fighting…12! Now there is nairy 1! Someone, mainly us, have to hold these cats accountable!!
This has to stop!!!

For Pete’s sake, can you please give us some more information on Harrington? How has he performed so far? Considering how important he may be (and soon) why haven’t you done an interview with him so that we can find out more about his attitude and ability? Considering how much attention has been lavished on Vick’s troubles, you’d think a similar amount of attention would be lavished on his stand-ins (not just Harrington). Come on, Steve!

Speaking of Vick, Tim Tucker’s article in today’s AJC is just more proof that the AJC has an agenda when it comes to the Falcon’s QB. The Falcons have given NO (ZERO, ZILCH, NADA) indication that they may wish to sever ties with the QB but yet the AJC feels the need to write an article that details the ramifications of doing so - even going so far as to suggest that the ramifications of getting rid of him are not THAT bad. What a disgrace!
It is OBVIOUS that the paper WANTS the Falcons to get rid of him and the paper continues to write articles that have a completely negative slant toward him while failing to mention ANYTHING that might be construed as good news regarding the QB. The slanted reporting of the water bottle situation was a complete joke and the reporting of the dogfighting situation has been even worse. I find it interesting that MULTIPLE reporters at ESPN were able to find MULTIPLE sources who say that Vick is unlikely to be indicted in the dogfighting investigation but yet the AJC doesn’t mention this in their coverage of the situation. Do the reporters at the AJC have sources? What are those sources saying? Why so quiet on news that could be considered as not negative toward Vick?

I just read the article about Vick…..obviously we can cut him if he gets convicted, but I want to know whether or not we can get a portion of our signing bonus money back if he gets convicted?
AND what would the salary cap implications look like if he gets convicted and we get a portion of the signing bonus returned. Do we still take a $6M hit in 2007 and $15M hit in 2008?
If we can avoid or significantly reduce the salary cap hit, it might be in the Falcons best interest if Vick gets charged and convicted!
If not, we are definitely stuck with him for a minimum of 3 more years and we can only hope he becomes a better decision maker and gets more accurate as a passer.

Once again, AJC has egg on their face. Authorities said from the beginning that Vick was not a suspect. The AJC made him one anyways. Now the authorities say he will not be indicted. The AJC refuses to print that. The new head coach was brought in specifically to coach Mike Vick. The AJC writes an article on how to release Vick. What a joke of a paper.

Thanks Nunna Yo Biznezz for posting that (THe Chicago Sports Review).
And for all of you ‘questioning’ the AJC’s coverage in this Vick matter, I agree with you about the poor journalism the AJC has exhibited throughout this affair.
If the hearsay damns Vick, it leads, if not, it is not mentioned.
And A-ville Ranger, why don’t you take your non-support right out if this blog as well, if you are truly ‘finished with the team in all ways’ as you say.
Because Vick still has the ‘relation to this organization’ of being our starting QB, and being a citizen of the USA he is innocent until proven guilty. That’s the ‘garbage’ I support, but I don’t have to tell you where to go because judging by your hatefullness expressed here you are already nearly there on your own.

This case is not over. Just because someone from espn said vick wouldn’t be indicted doesn’t make it so. Just like the espn expert who said one of the hawks owners shot down a trade for amare stoudemire. The suns said that the report was a flat out lie and was also denied by michael gearon jr. Espn spreads more rumors and lies than any organization on earth. So just because some talking head at espn said that he would not be indicted probably means he will. I hope not because I’m ready for this crap to blow over and see what vick can do in petrino’s offense. But this has to be the last straw for this guy. Their coverage of the Falcons is shameless, their venom, bias and slander has no boundaries. They fail to provide you possible bias of the sources they use, they faoil to give you the whole story.
With the spamming of the pages of the AJC with “Vick is guilty” headlines, where is the truth in all this? Where are the headlines that state the feds have absolutely not a shred of evidence implicating Vick in dogfighting??
The AJC does not represnt the loyal die hard faithful Falcon fan, the AJC does not represent Atlanta. Don’t forget the AJC sold “GOI SAINTS” cards at a Falcon/Saints home game a couple years ago. If that had happened in green Bay the fanbase would have run the paper out of town for heresie.

No matter how the dog issue settles, the cloud will hang over things and will be a constant during the 2007 season. Vick will likely have an another average season of ups and downs. He will probably not be a member of the Falcons in 2 years. What will be so bad about that? There are other QB’s who can lead and win. Matter of fact, Herrington has a higher career completion percentage than Vick (55% vs. 53.8%) and played for, arguably, one of the worst teams in the league for most of that time (Lions). Don’t be so swift to dismiss Herrington. It is a sad thing with Vick. He may get things right but it likely will not be in Atlanta. Maybe, technically, there is no proof (in that underworld testifying probably means entering the witness protection program). The weight of the evidence and logic suggests he beat the system. He did not, however, convince the logically-thinking fans. Further, he never developed a rapport with the press (nor the fans) here in Atlanta. That, more than anything, is why he seems to be ‘vilified” by the press.

WHAT’STOCOMEOFIT, if ignorance was a building your dumb “A” would be condemned. First, you biased clowns claimed the Surrey county authorities were being bought off by MVick and/or Blank. When the FEDS got involved you ignorant monkeys let out a collective cheer because you knew they couldn’t be bought off. Therefore, you convinced yourselves that MVick would be found guilty, not because he was, but because you fools wanted him to be soooo badly.
Now the FEDS have notified both Falcon and NFL authorities that they have “NO” evidence linking MVick to dogfighting. That obviously prompted you to make the following statement, “THE WEIGHT OF THE EVIDENCE AND LOGIC SUGGESTS HE BEAT THE SYSTEM”. What evidence are you talking about you moron? Are you saying you know more about the evidence that’s been gathered than the FEDS? Are you saying the FEDS have been bought off, and are covering up for MVick? Do you have any idea what the word LOGIC means, or how it should be applied?
Let me show you something that even a biased idiot like you can’t ignore. Go back to the website you visited to get the completion percentages you used to try and prove Harrington is a better QB than MVick. Research, and then compare the WINNING PERCENTAGES of the two QB’s, especially playoff wins. Compare the number of conference titles, playoff and divisional appearances of the two. Then come back and tell me none of these results are as important in determining a QB’s value, as having a higher completion percentage(by .012 of a percent). THAT’S NOT BEING LOGICAL, IT’S BEING ILLOGICAL, YOU MORON.

Hey, Ken, you are correct on a few points. First, the difference in passings stats is neglible (actually 55.2 vs. 53.8, or 1.4% difference). Also, Harrington (sp. error in prior post) has not led a team to playoffs. Vick has twice with one division championship. Harrington has not had the talent around him that Vick, at least in some years, has had. Lastly, no, the Fed’s did not connect him. That does not mean it is unreasonable to think, given that he paid for the construction of the kennels, visited the house he owned, etc., etc. that he knows more than he is letting on to about the situation. It would not be the first time, nor the last, that someone got away with a crime.
Now for what you are wrong about. I do not seek Vick’s failure. In fact, I would like him to succeed here. I simply think the situation has reached a point where, absent a huge change in him AND in the team, it will not happen. My opinion only, but I think Vick needs to build a reservoir of goodwill with the press and the fans. To do that he will need to be accessible, friendly and converant. In 7 years he has not done that, for whatever reason. You might consider toning down your rhetoric. Finally, and I stand by this, the fans (some of them and some who are not basing this on race) have already (fair or not)reached a conclusion on him that he is not the leader he needs to be to garner the full respect of his teammates. Time alone will tell if that can be changed.

You would think the AJC would report on Vick unlikely to be indicted. I mean it’s all over ESPN.Com. The AJC reported the other stories on ESPN.COM about Vick being a so called heavy weight in dogfighting so why not this new story. They have a bias agenda not only against Vick but against those who love him. I guess the AJC thinks they are the only ones who provide information. I know they have the information since the Falcons are one of the sources named by Chris Mortenson. This is just poor reporting . And it is almost unbelievable the way the AJC has reported this story. Vick being such a huge star around this city.

AJC is a high school paper. Without any competition, they have proven to get worse instead of better.
It is blatantly obvious how they have attacked Mike Vick during the entire off-season and BEEN WRONG EVERY TIME!
Not one apology. Not one correction. Just off to the next embellishment.
What a joke of a paper. Atlanta should be ashamed that this is the best newspaper that they can put out.

Final thought on Vick not being indicted. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen did say the following: “The authorities have told the Falcons and league that there has not been any evidence that can be tied to Vick with the alleged dogfighting ring, the sources said. The law enforcement authorities have privately told league and team officials that at least three people are expected to be indicted but the identities of those individuals were unknown.”
Guess what? Those 3 people might just talk when asked the tough questions. These indictments may merely be round 1 with more to come. Vick is far from being “out of the woods” on this one.

The real fans of this team should buy a full page of the AJC and apologize to Mike Vick for the City of Atlanta’s poor hospitality and rush to judgement.

It’s interesting that so man writers are giving so much credit to ESPN for how they are handling Vick. Let’s talk about something important here: Football talent that is shown on the field. Check out this article and notice that Vick is ranked slightly ahead of JP Losman and 4 spots behind Tony Romo…..and well behind Phillip Rivers, Drew Brees, Hasselbeck, Marc Bulger and Steve McNair. I wish he would play up to his contract. Oh, and one more, Byron Leftwich….
