Buying into the new regime
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Falcons coach Bobby Petrino said in an interview last week that, for the most part, players have bought into the new coaching staff and what it’s trying to teach.
However, he’s noticed that, “you still have some guys sitting on the fence, deciding whether they’re going to jump in or jump out or kind of wait and see if the water’s too hot or too cold. You still have some of those guys but the majority of it is very positive.”
When a coaching change is made, it’s probably tough for every player to feel comfortable because scheme changes might not fit everyone’s strengths and new coaches also want to supplant current players with new ones.
A huge part of the Falcons’ success this season, or lack thereof, is how much players take to Petrino’s system — and who those players are. Key players, such as Michael Vick and Joe Horn, have publicly stated their willingness to follow Petrino’s lead. That’s a huge endorsement since they play such vital roles. If it’s the leaders of the team that are on board, then Petrino and his staff should feel pretty comfortable about their transition.

With “Coach Killa” Vick turning into a “Franchise Killa,” Petrino has his work cut out for him. WOW… Vick and Horn are stating that they are “willingly” going to follow Petrino’s lead. What … they get to pick and choose who is worthy of their loyalty and professionalism? What a joke. I now see Blank is to blame on this one. I guess the Green Bay Packers stated that they were going to follow Lombardi’s lead as well. Two questions for fans…. Who is in charge, and who is running the ship? Pathetic.

Was this suppose to spark discussion??? It’s the same exact info that was already posted in the paper/online. maybe elaborating a little more would have been appropriate. I like the work you do Steve but I have to agree with another poster….. it seems as if it’s not about negative press on Vick then the info we’re getting here is pretty half hearted.

Does anyone really care if Vick buys into Petrino’s system… I’d be more concerned that Harrington is getting it and that we have a quality back up to get through the 07 season and maybe attract a top QB for 08.

The biggest Blank mistake was signing Vick to that $130 million contract. Even if they wanted to get rid of him, they can’t. I wish there was some way out of the cap hit they’d have to take to cut him.

You mean Blank wasn’t even smart enough to stipulate a “morals clause” of ANY type in a GUARANTEED contract for Vick?
Did Blank think he would be called THE MAN for insisting on such a thing to keep Mr. Vick DOWN?
What an idiot! This nonsense actually makes me LONG for the days when the Clampetts,….uh….The Smiths…owned the Falcons.

Steve,
Love your work and we were lucky to get you down here from the Post (and the Wizards beat) but I have to agree with my peers. That seemed lazy. I realize NFL beat writer ia a busy job and you have wasted your offseason covering Vickgate 2007, but a little more info would help here.
You basically took two already existing peices of information (1. Petrino knows there are fence sitters and 2. Vick and Horn have bought into the system) and drew a conclusion that Vick and Horn’s buy in makes it easier for the fence sitters to buy in. STEVE we can draw simple conclusions on our own or if not one of the brainless AJC columnists can do it for us. As a beat writer your job is to report info.
How bout telling us how Laurent Robinson looked against Chris Houston at the last minicamp for rookies. How about explaining the role of the 3rd weakside linebacker Huff since Demo is supposedly ahead of schedule (3 starters at the WILL?)How baout the 5th WR (Gibson?, Jennings, Robinson?. Lewis Sanders vs. Chris Houston. Chris Crocker vs. Jimmy Williams. Something cmon.

iPassedTheBar, I think if there were such a clause in Vick’s contract, he’d be gone by now. As it is, the Falcons are basically married to him. I believe Blank made the decision before Rich McKay became GM. I can’t believe McKay would have approved it.

What was Blank thinking trying to lock up the guy who sells out the Dome every single sunday he plays in it? Last I checked there was a 30,000 waiting list for tickets. Blank is such a moron to make a 10 fold profit off of one of the most exciting players in the league by selling tickets and jersey, etc. What a stupid Business man. Why doesn’t he read these blogs where the $25k a year people post if he wants to be successful?
By NASCARfan

I’m more interested in knowing who the fence sitters are. Here are my guesses.
1) Keith Brooking: he eroneously thinks he can play Will, although he is slow and was routinely embarrassed by running backs in the flat in his two and a half years there. He sees playing Mike as a demotion and or the coaches actually percieving his fading skills. He knows these coaches will put the good of the team before what he wants, and wonders if his days as a Falcon are numbered.
2) DHall: he loved the old coaching staff, especially Little Jimmy Mora because not one of those morons held him accountable for his immaturity on the field. How many drives did he help the offense for with his idiotic and unproffesional personal foul penalties in the last two years? He knows he won’t be able to get away with murder any more, but he’s acting like the spoiled kid who’s parents finally said no. I think he’s going to be the main problem and voice of discontent if the team doesn’t make the playoffs this year. Attitude problem.
3) Alge: because he’s the lone offensive piece that hasn’t been able to get on the field, and he may be worried that in Petrino’s wide open and inventive offense, his numbers might not be as good. I don’t think Alge would really be a fence sitter, but he doesn’t know how good this offense is going to be for him because he hasn’t been able to practice.
4) Warrick Dunn: this is hard for me to say, but Dunn knows he’s being replaced. He knows the coaching staff wants a bigger back. This is going to be third or fourth time he’s going to have to prove himself. He’s got to be thinking: Tiki Barber was small and played in a power running game, so why doesn’t anyone think I can? I can really see Dunn sitting on the fence.
5) Chris Crocker: he knows his time as a starter is slipping away. He knows Williams will eventually be the starter.
As for players who’ve bought into the system and the coaches, I believe Vick is No. 1 as it was apparant that he thought, like the rest of us did, that Greg Knapp was a total idiot. Add Lawyer and Horn to that list. Add the whole freaking offensive line to the list because they hated Little Jimmy Mora and Gibbs. Of course, the rookies are on the list because they don’t know any different.

Vick — A leader!? What a joke. Maybe a leader amoung THUGS.
A leader is Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Steve Mc Nair…….
Joey Harrington will be our QB in 2007 while the THUG #7 is serving jail time or suspension.
Vick will NEVER be respected again. He will be protested at games by the animal rights “animals” and will NEVER live his last year down.

NASCARfan, I have to agree with most of what you wrote, but I don’t think Alge or Brooking are “fence-sitters.” Both of them are high-character players who’ve proven themselves over the years, and Petrino knows what they can do. I seriously doubt he won’t respect them or use them wisely. You’d haave to be a fool not to want to put the ball in Alge’s hands, and more than anything, Brooking wants to win and is a leader, so he won’t gripe too much.

Does it make since for animal rights protesters to be at games if Vick hasn’t even been charged with anything? Have you notices since the FEDS took over the case there hasn’t been any more updates/leaks on the case? Have you notices media sources like ESPN, NFL.com, and the AJC have all been posting articles that are a week or two old? They are changing the headlines and presenting them as new. Vick was ACCUSED of being involved, so I have an idea why don’t you let the legal system take care of the Vick situation instead of sounding like idiots. I just want to know what everyone is going to say when all charges are dropped.

It was just two weeks ago that the online editor made that lying statement to Angela Tuck about no more Vick blogs because of the racist, ignorant comments. What Bull….the only reason the AJC stopped a week of any blogs about Vick was because they took down a blog about Vikki Locke that spurned fat jokes and hurt her feelings. To justify taking that blog down, they had to take down any blogs about Vick because the comments are 10 times worse and someone within the newsroom complained about the hypocrisy. Now I guess they figure everyone forgot about that little statement and the AJC is right back to serving its bottom feeders.

Let me clear this up I was a Falcons fan way before arrived. I could care less if he is the QB or if Joey beats him out…personally I would rather see DJ behind center. The fact is everyone on here that is saying Vick is guilty, doesn’t know anymore than what the media lets you know. So these are some truths about the Falcons.
Vick will be the QB this year unless he gets hurt.
If he does get hurt and Joey steps in he will be successful and there will be a major QB controversy.
Houston is not the second best corner on the team and needs to earn the starting job on the field.
The Falcons D will finish in the top ten.
Special teams will be %100 better this year than last.

1980Falcon,
Can you even name another Falcons player? All you do is turn every blog into hate for Vick. You don’t like Vick, you think he is guilty. We get it. Now get over it. There is more to the team than your hate for Vick. Sorry to tell you that Brady(child out of wedlock), McNair(DUI), Manning(involved in Sexual Harrassment Scandal http://www.answers.com/topic/peyton-manning), and Brees(sued his own mother) aren’t available to play for the Falcons this year. Why don’t we wish for a million dollars while we’re at it too? Did you know that there are 10 other players on the offensive side of the ball? There is also a whole other facet to the game called “Defense” and “Special Teams”. 11 players on those teams as well. I know it’s hard to imagine but there are better things to discuss than your hatred for Vick.

And if Vick is guilty (which I hope he isn’t) he needs to rot under the jail. oh yeah and I didn’t just pass the bar I’m a rising senior at frederick douglass high and even I know that the 5th amendment of the united states constitution grants every citizen due process of law and the rights to a fair trial by jury. with that said I think I’ll find me a Georgia Bulldogs blog where I won’t have to deal with fair- weathered fans who only love you when you’re on top.

Just the “spin” ma’am
Why discuss Vick? He is supposed to be the leader. We hold our leaders to high standards. Do you think the media should cover the agricultural secretary over the president? Come on! This team has lived and died by Vicks play. He is the focal point. Maybe we should talk about Michael Koenen? Josh Mallard or how about Daren Stone.
Hate… no … Reason.
None of those other players we involved in anything close to what Vick has done.. over and over and over.
Your reaching.
The offensive line will get better with the new additions. Joe Horn will be a big plus. Jimmy Williams will step up big time this year at safety. Anderson had a great OTA and will contribute BIG in his rookie season.
Yes. It is a team BUT name me a team that has has long term success without a top notch QB? Name one!

Lets see Petrino has the endorsement of team leaders Vick and Horn? Clearly regardless of whether you like him or not vick is no leader, and horn aside from the fact he is the new guy all he is a slightly above average WR on the down side of an OK career. Just cause someone runs their yap doesn’t make them a leader. Petrino doesn’t need their endorsement they need his

1980 Fan,
No. Why ONLY discuss Vick? You are more obsessed the the lovers/apologists.
When the offense is ranked higher than the defense, then pointing fingers at the QB doesn’t exactly fix the defense does it?
Tampa Bay won a Super Bowl w/o a top notch QB. So did Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Chicago just went to the Super Bowl with Rex Grossman!!!! Hell, Atlanta went to a Super Bowl with Chris Chandler.
Top notch coaching is what you’re looking for. Someone who realizes that the game is much bigger than the QB position. Beacause of that, you, my friend are disqualified from coaching.
You may continue your hatred/obsession for Vick now. Too bad for you that he’ll still be the QB no matter how much hate comes out of your computer keyboard.

Dan that what you say! you would not know a leader if you fell on one. will I guess since 1966 we at Falcon nation have never had a leader . Mike Vick is our outcast leader say the media and haters. Call him thug, not a leader , george Bush, dumb, what ever you want. #7 will start and will win. You hater said the same about Hank Arron, Doug william, same song of hate!

Mr. Spin,
What are you talking about?
Mike Vick better than…Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer..no way..accurate passers.. managed the game. Mike better than Big Ben? come on. At least he can complete more than 50% of his passes. As bad as Chris Chandler was..he had a great deep ball and solid under game…and we LOST! The Bears LOST with Rex. Bad examples. Baltimore had probably one of the best defenses of all time… followed by Tampa and Pittsburg.
Even with those defenses… they had GAME MANAGERS as QB’s. We have a running back.
So it was all the coaches fault that Vick has not been a consistent winner? Sounds like you are joining Vick on blaming everyonelse.
It is time for a change at QB whether or not Vick is charged.

Here is a collectors item folks! My very last submission to this sorry collection of hateful egos. The AJC blogs sicken me. Its not just the Falcons or the sports. In just about every blog here, the lowest common denominator is the willingness of all parties involved to resort to abusing anyone with a conflicting opinion. Its sad, and I refuse to be a part of it anymore. Grow up already.

The Pure South,
Brother, I hear you. I remember going to the games in the late 70’s, early 80’s. Whole different crowd. Black and White. The criminal element has creeped into the dome. Vick is thier hero. It is sad. You hear them defend him over and over and over.
Watch when we play Matt Shaub this year. If Vick is under center we will get our butt kicked.
It is time for a change at QB.

Nevermind that Bobby Petrino says that Vick is grasping the offense well and has given him praises several different times throughout the offseason.
I was a Vick fan, but after the very eloquent and informative posting from “the PURE south” I have changed my ways. This guy seems intelligent and open minded. Let’s follow him around for a day, and try and just seep in some of the knowledge. This guy gets it…

Maybe Blank is just trying to cater to those people that support the team? The Falcons had a terrible unloyal fan base called “Atlantans” until Vick came along. Now the dome sells out, and the real fans stand by their team. Except for those who don’t like the new crowd, yet didnt’ support their team as part of the old crowd(You may also know them as “Braves” or “Hawks” fans). Why would Blank want to go to the days of TV Black outs, Empty Sections, and 5-11 seasons? Call me a southern redneck, but that seems kinda dumb.

I’ve been a Falcons fan long enough to know that old southern habits die hard. Little things like giving Danny Heatley a pass for killing someone else(fact), yet hanging Vick in the media for being accused of watching dog fights(Non-fact).
I’ve been a Falcons fan long enough to sit anywhere I wanted in the stadium with a $10 ticket purchased in the Fulton County Parking Lot.
I’ve been a Falcons fan long enough to realize that Atlanta Fans are sorry, and that the dome will be empty again the day that Vick isn’t our QB.
Name a sports town with sorrier fans? The Atlanta Braves win their division 15 years straight and the fans reward them by not selling out PLAYOFF games. Atlanta Hawks fans? Where are you? Loyal Falcons fan? huh?

As long as we win… The Dome will be full. You give Mike TOO much credit.
I just dont get all the Mike Vick worship. What a bad example he is to kids. From VD, to fingers, to Rap culture, to dog fighting, weed…. I am over him.
To show you its not race, give me McNabb, McNair,hell.. get Doug Williams out of retirement. Now that was a QB.
It is time for a change at QB. We have the coach…better WR…Better O line…Better D line and some promise at DB.

Blacks are always apologizing for their Hero. Smoke Dope, and bang Ho’s, catch STD’s and fight dogs. And then blame everyone else for your thuggish ways. Guess it’s a BLACK thing and a Pure BLood american like myself wouldn’t understand. You people kill me. Oh well, this will continue until Blank Moves the stadium to the suburbs and OUT of the Ghetto! And it’s 2008 but I see thugs still don’t read. I said I don’t GO to the games anymore because it’s gotten way too DARK for my taste. Too much Rap, too my style over substance. Women in there worried too much about how tightly their pants are fitting them instead of sitting down and watching the games. Bros and Hoes…..Then you can’t even drive out of the parking lots because they are walking slow and knocking on your window begging for handouts. This city has really gone to the dogs….Maybe it will take another God Cleansing Act like he did in New Orleans to get rid of the BAD element.

I’m about to hit the road but I agree with 1980 Falcon you all give too much credit to Vick. Petrino has a system that is not going to take superman at QB to run. He is an offensive minded coach that is going to exploit a defenses weakness. Let’s admit it the last couple of years the O-line sucked at pass protection, the DB’s sucked, gave up big plays, and were terrible against the run. But the big thing was the special teams absolutely sucked. Petrino and his staff has addressed all the issues. I don’t know if it will be a one-year turn around but I see us competing super bowl within the next 2-3 years.

Win… Yes… Not every year but consistently. By the way, I have been a fan through ALL the losing. Still go to games, buy shirts, hats etc….
You mean to tell me your going to defend a franchise that has never had a back to back winning season in 40 years! They dont deserve to sell out. Now the Braves, I agree with you. Bad Fans.
I think with Vick behind us… we can build a TRUE team without catering to him and his lack of leadership and football savy.

The PURE South,
I’m not black and Vick isn’t my hero. White people surely have nothing to apoligize for regarding their heroes right? A pureblood American? The kind that put Africans into slavery? The kind that rounded up all Japanese people during WWII? The kind that put Chinese slaves to death so that you could have a railroad system, only to tear it up 50 years later? The kind that keeps other nations poor by dominating commerce and waging war? The kind that the rest of the world hates? That kind? And you’re worried about people moving to slow past your car after a football game? By pureblooded American did you mean selfish, ignorant, non-educated, narrow minded, fat and lazy American?
It’s football people. What time does the race start?
