Petrino getting dose of NFL life

Phoenix - I’m here at the NFL owners’ meetings, where a lot of policies, rule changes and other measures are being discussed by the most elite decision makers of the NFL. Owner Arthur Blank and president/general manager Rich McKay are representing the Falcons.

Coach Bobby Petrino also is in the house and is getting a serious dose of how the NFL operates. From meetings to interviews to discussions that have little to do with Xs and Os, Petrino is definitely getting a reality check that he’s not at Louisville anymore.

The biggest news expected to come out of the meetings is first-year commissioner Roger Goodell’s new player code of conduct.

Goodell, who has the blessing of the players’ union and coaches, is expected to implement rules Tuesday that will punish players who repeatedly get in trouble on and off the field.

Though there has been speculation that Goodell will implement a ‘three-strikes and you’re out’ policy, it is more likely that there will be other, less-structured parameters with varying degrees of punishment.

More on the homefront, the Falcons could be emerging as the front-runners for defensive tackle Ian Scott. The Chicago Bears, who he’s played with for four seasons, were believed to have the inside track to retain him, but they signed 49ers DT Anthony Adams Sunday.

Atlanta now could be at the head of the pack to sign Scott, who would provide solid depth at nose tackle and who could possibly compete with Grady Jackson for the starting spot, even though he’s just more than 300 pounds - about 50 less than Grady.

The Falcons also continue talking with backup quarterbacks Tim Rattay and Anthony Wright.

Has anybody tried to sign D-Mo to an offer sheet?

Which back-up QB do you think is a better fit for the team, Wright or Rattay?

No mention of Mare by you Steve, but other outlets suggest the Falcons are looking to sign him as our Kicker….thoughts?

Who are the Falcons NFLPA reps?

While at the meetings, do you get any access inside meetings or do you hang with Adam Schefter in the lobby waiting for meetings to end and talking to the movers and shakers inbetween meetings?

Thanks for checking in. We just posted a short item on this but the Falcons will play host to the Colts on Thanksgiving night on NFL.

As for how to cover this event: We media are not allowed in on sessions. We have to lurk in hallways and grab team officials when they break out of sessions. They know the drill so they’re not freaked out when we approach them. There are also a handful of news conferences.

In terms of Olindo Mare, he is still under contract with the Dolphins, who are trying to work out some trades for Mare since they signed Jay Feely. The Falcons are probably not going to trade for a kicker but they might pursue Mare if he is waived.

His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, is pushing for the Dolphins to release Mare, but for now, there hasn’t been any public discussion of Mare from the Falcons. I have been checking, though.

Thanks for checking in

Asking the majority of these people to actually spell correctly on this blog is quite a stretch, but thanks for bringing it up. I agree that this team’s issues is not at QB, but with the defense. I really hope Grady Jackson stays and is not released. However, I think that since Atlanta is looking to build through the draft, it will be interesting who they draft in the second round to improve the line and the secondary.

Wyche, level with me.

Is it one of your editors who has such a hardon for Vick (my guess), or have you pushed the non-story (gasp! marijuana! the horror! it must be a conspiracy!) on your own?

I really feel for you if it’s the former. You’ve kind of shot your credibility on a witch hunt (I resigned once over a different — yet analogous — set of hatchet-man orders). It looks like Furman got wrapped up in it, too (god bless his senile soul).

Real quick on the coverage of the Michael Vick-water bottle issue.

First off, the AJC was not the only media outlet to pursue the story.

Secondly, Vick has told the media, through Falcons’ officials, that he wanted to speak to about the issue, which is why we continued to follow the story. Last Thursday, VIck decided to speak on the water bottle issue at a media session set up by the Falcons at the team facility.

Vick told his side of the story. When he told us some new elements of the story, we had to call the Miami-Dade PD to get their side of things. Keep in mind, we had been trying to get Mike Vick’s side of things after the initial incident report, he just waited until last Thursday to speak.

I don’t believe anyone was on a witch hunt. The AJC printed all sides of what people had to say about the issue and let the readers draw their own opinions.

I personally don’t have any agenda with Mike Vick or anyone else. My only agenda is to try to do the best reporting and writing I can for the readers of the AJC. Trust me, like my work or not, I appreciate all of you who read — and blog!

By westsidebob

The Falcon did well this off season so far. They got the best of the deal with two draft picks for a QB that is yet to win a game. The Texans are crazy to give an unproven QB that much money. This year MV will be able to change the plays at the line of scrimmage to create match ups. If Tim Rattay would have started every game for Tama Bay last season they would have made the play offs so many the falcons we get Tama Bays best QB?

By Najeh Davenpoop

March 26, 2007 5:23 PM | Link to this

Steve, if the Falcons add another QB, keeping in mind that they already signed Chris Redman what is the likelihood DJ Shockley keeps his spot on the roster? Will the Falcons possibly target a QB in the middle to later rounds of the draft? And if the Falcons can’t find a way to add Olindo Mare, how likely is it that Aaron Elling wins the kicker job?

I’d think Anthony Wright, with his stronger arm and having played for Hue Jackson last year, would be a better fit in this offense than Tim Rattay. I’d much rather seen the Falcons sign Wright to be the backup.

By Art in Tenn

March 26, 2007 5:29 PM | Link to this

There was no witch hunt. I love MV, and the Miami-Dade Police certainly mishandled the situation in making the “marijana like substance” comment, but Mike was overblowing things with his witch hunt comment. Also, like it or not, the AJC was only doing what they were professionally obligated to do- cover the story.

My personaly feeling is that they did the right thing in trading Matt. Moving up in the first round plus 2 2nd round picks for a guy who has made 2 NFL starts, I think thats pretty slick. You have to assume the 2nd next year will be high, lets face it… the Texans are the Washington Nationals of the NFL.

Steve, if the Falcons do sign Ian Scott, is it going to be a big time deal? If so, are further salary cap releases coming? They seem to be awfully tight against the cap.

Thanks for the Blog!

Petrino needs a taste of NFL history. When Spurrier came to the NFL he kept bringing in Gators players with crappy NFL careers into the Redskins. It didnt work (no surprise) and Spurrier lost his job. The Redman signing completely reminds me of that…except that on the whole Louisville players arent nearly as good as Gator players.

Petrino, if you dont want to be coaching college again, dont make the Falcons a pro version of the cards. A pipeline of crappy nfl players making the team ONLY because they know your system is a guaranteed recipe for defeat.

There’s nothing to suggest that Petrino is trying to get rid of DJ. Getting a backup QB is a crap shoot any way you slice it. The season that Garcia had in Philly was an aberration. There are maybe 2 or 3 Backup QBs in the NFL who could take a team to the playoffs. I done know of any that can take a team to the Championship. The Falcons decisions in player selections are constrained by CASH. You get the best player that you can for the money you have and hope it works out.

By Mike

I do not see Atlanta parting ways with DJ now. I believe he will be on thier roster next year, maybe even as 2nd string. I have mixed feelings about Grady. The pool of D-linemen is pretty deep this year. The safety pool is to, but all of your premier safeties are projected first rounders. I ha dismissed Landry before, but the more I read about him, the more I like what scouts have to say. If he is there at #8 then I say take him. 2nd round grab Sydney Rice out of Carolina and Harrell out of Tenn. Thoams from FL will probably be great in the NFL, but his past behavior problems make him a risky pick. 3 round take Crowder DE out of TX. Some drafts have us taking a kicker in the third, but the kicker from Colorado in the third…but I would rather wait until the 6th and get the kicker out of UCLA…he is good from about 51-53 yards…and his weakness is kick offs, because he has about a 65-70 yrd range and is a poor tackler, but we have Koenen who handles kick off duties now. Also I think Abbate with the 2nd 4th round pick…. this guy is getting no attention, and I feel he will be the next Bruschi at MLB…little body, big heart.

Mr. Wyche

I’m confused on the Vick story. Here’s why:

Did Vick say

(1) that he carries jewelry in the water bottle but not necessarily on that day.

or

(2) that he carries jewelry in the water bottle including that day.

If he said/meant (1), then obviously the police wouldn’t have found any jewelry in the bottle because he wasn’t carrying any that day.

If he said/meant (2), then it should be noted that the security agents found the bottle in the trash after Vick had discarded it. Did Vick remove the jewelry? That would seem a likely thing to do before throwing the bottle away. And again, it would seem clear that if this is the case no jewelry would have been in the bottle after it was confiscated (b/c it had been removed).

So, one possibile way to contradict (2) would be if there was evidence that he didn’t remove anything from the bottle before throwing it away (security cam, eye-witness, etc).

Perhaps all the police mean to say is that Vick never mentioned anything about jewelry to them. So that’s why this is a new revelation - if that’s all Vick had if for, why wouldn’t he have mentioned it? That might be reason for concern, but that didn’t seem to be the gist of the news snippets I read.

The snippets I’ve read tend to suggest that Vick said there was jewelry, but the police said there wasn’t, so there’s the contradiction. But that’s not really clear to me at this point.

What gives?

By destin

March 26, 2007 8:19 PM | Link to this

Three quick questions: 1. Does Petrino have a good idea of where he plans on playing Jimmy Williams (FS or CB)? 2. Was there a specific ‘target’ in mind with the move up to #8 overall? 3. Isn’t it obvious that DE is the Falcons most glaring weakness?

I have to agree with Najeh.. Moore’s column was an excellent overview of where the Falcons stand. If I were a Houston fan which I am not, I would be happy to have Schaub, but not at the price they paid to get him. It may pay off then the Texans will be geniuses…but to give up as much as they did for a qb that really hasn’t had many snaps, and has spent his short career in a system that probably has not helped him progress very much past the college level. Everyone including Vick needs to put the water bottle incident in the past. Vick needs to step up and show what he can do with his new found freedom to play QB. I like the idea of getting Calvin Johnson, but really do not see it happening. The Falcons would have to give up to much. If they were to taget Calvin it is all about timing. No move will be made until Cleveland is on the clock (given that Calvin is not picked first or second). I think it would take the #8 overall and atleast a second rounder next year. I think safety should be addressed first, if Nelson is taken before Atlanta is on the clock, then they should trade down for more picks.

By CQ

Why is Allen Rossum and Jason Webster still on the roster?

I hope the Falcons use those top 3 draft picks on a Safty, O-lineman and a defensive end.

By Hasavior

March 27, 2007 8:27 AM | Link to this

I think going after another DT/NT is very good move, because you can work both Grady and Scott on pass/run situations, still have the pressure and size up front with LB supporting and flashing the gaps.

If they go after the safety at the 8 pick, i like the williams, hall and the rookie at safety, but remember we signed a CB a month ago. Looks like Williams may play some safety as well.

i like parts that interlock and show schemes that are solid during the course of the game. That keeps offensive coordinators guessing and off balance. harder to show holes in the defense.

I don’t think they will go after the 19 year old, if they are not able to sign scott. I am sure that he will get is big running back from Loiusville, the one with the broke leg and fovor him into short yardage pass situations.

I think i see his plan. I think the second round this year is critical in terms of getting that special player that makes systems work, just that one guy that will tie the binds together. No flashy name, just a warrior to take teams to another level. And there are a few out there no one is mentioning.

CQ: rossum’s signing bonus would probably cause too great a cap hit to cut him now. maybe after june 1st. webster is okay as a 3rd or 4th cb on the depth chart. so, he’ll remain on the roster.

This isn’t a Jim Mora love fest anymore… Redman is coming in to play a “Trent Dilfer” role. A guy who’s familiar with the offense the coach is trying to run that can help the other quarterbacks. Shockley will get a shot in training camp, but if he sucks, he’s gone. Petrino is not going to keep him just because he’s a Georgia Bulldog. So, get used to the idea that Anthony Wright will come in here and take the 2nd spot with Redman at 3rd string holding a clipboard and headset.
