Offseason conditioning period kicks off
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Falcons started offseason conditioning drills Monday, bringing players together for the first time since their season dubiously ended in Philadelphia.
Coach Bobby Petrino said he’s eager to see a lot of these players for the first time in a setting where their work ethics, attitudes and desire to improve can be documented. So far, he said he’s been impressed with the professionalism some players have shown.
However, this is an evaluation period where rebellious attitudes or poor work habits can grease the skids to the waiver wire for some players.
This will be a good time for wide receiver Brian Finneran, who has been working out anyway, to show that he’s on track to return from last year’s season-ending knee injury. Same with guard Kynan Forney, whose shoulder popped out of place several times before he had season-ending surgery.
On a side note, shoulder injuries to interior lineman aren’t good so the Falcons need to be stockpiling depth behind Forney, arguably their best lineman.
Recently signed guard Toniu Fonoti, who is listed at 350 pounds, is going to have to get into and stay in shape. There has never been any question about his ability, but injuries and conditioning have cut short a promising start to his career and this could be his last shot.
A player a lot of you might be interested in following is former Georgia wide receiver Fred Gibson. Cut after being selected in the fourth round by Pittsburgh two years ago, Gibson, who spent the past two seasons on Miami’s practice squad, is reunited with former college roommate D.J. Shockley.
Not only will Gibson be catching passes from Shockley but being around such a grounded and driven pro like D.J. could help Gibson finally grasp what it takes to capitalize on his vast talents.

The Falcons need MORE talent from Athens. How about some DEs and an LB this year in the draft from UGA? The Falcons will not have to look very far to address their needs. Go Falcons, Go Dogs!!!

You are right, the Falcons don’t have to look too far for thier draft this year. Only as far as Louisiana, where Laron Landry is sitting there waiting on us at number 10.

So far I like the approach of the coaching staff and management. I’m a mega falcons fan. Even though we have a new coach everything looks very promising. Joe horn was an excellent move not for production, but for petuning these young and un focused receivers. Vick will have a great year passing the ball (ala dan reeves offense) the two are similar. Screw that WCO, vick is not built that way. Id love to have a power run, giant pass blockin team to punish opponents. Schaub will be gone so we need to get him outa here now b4 we get nothing for him next year. Stop keepin him around like vick isn’t gonna be here next year. Falcons 11-5 this comin season…yea I said it….WHAT? Go falcons

I like the fact that you reported Vick and others are already in the ATL working out. I am most curious about the Cap status of the team. I am also curious about Jenkins recent comments to Fox Sports that have been taken to mean that he is not on the same page as Vick.
I am extremely curious as to Zimmer’s plans on Defense and what he thinks of the D-line.
Will you be at the league meetings next week?

Steve,
Why hasn’t more been made of Vick and some others showing up earlier than the madatory reporting time? You know, Vick gets a lot of crap, some deserved most definately NOT deserved from the Atlanta media and the idiot contingent of redneck fans. So why when he does something to improve himself, does no one report it so some of these “fans” (a term I use loosely) can see that this guy isn’t sitting around doing nothing? Coming in early to work out with his teammates and to get a head start in learning the offense shows some of that leadership skill that many say Vick lacks. All we here is the negative (especially from idiot websites with a vendetta against Vick like those morons at pro football rumors or whatever).
Why don’t you report the positive, Steve? Why play to the idiot redneck contingent?

Thanks for checking in guys. Just wanted to let those who did not read my article today that I did report that Michael Vick had been coming in early for voluntary workouts.
As for Zimmer’s defensive plans, I wrote an article a few weeks ago in which Zimmer said he wanted to evaluate his personnel first hand before getting too specific but he said it would be a fast, aggressive defense.
And yes, I will be at the NFL meetings next week.
Thanks again for checking in.

hey, I got a couple plays for Vick if he’s gonna call his own plays-fast qb left, fast qb middle, fast qb right. Think our intellectual giant of a QB could remember those three?

I hope we don’t draft a WR, that would be like buying Rosie Odonell a two peice bathing suit. I mean Vick “can” throw and Rosie “can” wear a two piece bathing suit.

Jackson, it’s better to have Brooking in the middle where the play can come to him than have him getting embarrassed time after time by running backs in the flat at weakside, like he’s been the last two years.

Well, I personally think Brooking is past his prime at both positions, I agree with McKay about his attitude towards over 30 players for the most part, he has veered off that beleif system here lately. I think your prime is between 24 and 28 myself for a football player myself.

Any of y’all real Falcons fans see how the idiot redneck faction no longer whine and cry for Matt Schaub to replace Vick because even they now see that Schaub is just another Doug Johnson in waiting? So, since they have nothing to contribute to the discussion, no original ideas of their own, they just dump on Vick. To borrow an expression from that IRF, Boys, you’re gonna have to give it up, because that dog won’t hunt. Why don’t you unoriginal SOBs come with some logic and passion and give up this regurgitated crap you keep slinging Vick’s way. Y’all talk about how dumb Vick is, well, I’m sorry to tell you, if you think Vick is dumb, just look in the closest mirror to see someone a heck of a lot less intelligent.

Vick was not our problem last year it was play calling on both sides of the ball. I took numerous notes where bad plays were called in to Vick whom had no ability gave by the coaching staff to audible. Vick is an fairly accurate Quarterback when given the oppurtunity to use his Brain because the man did show us last year his ablility to read defenses. This year we as a team need a tenacious attitude on both sides of the ball aggresive hard hitting on the defense and a wont stop until I blow you out offense. More Deep Routes use the man’s arm ,More Roll out’s to the Right side he has the foot speed to get out of the pocket use it with protection. We really need to invest in screens with the backs we have they both are playmakers. Since Gregg Knapp is in Oakland send him his present Matt Shaub for the 1st round the will bite on it and Get Calvin Johnson Stay were u are at 10 in the Draft and Get that Louiville DE that is 19 years old he would be a great addition to the Defensive Line. No Safety Crocker and Milloy were Good they were not utilized right they are man to man players not zone. Jimmy should have started last year at corner he is a shut down corner let him play. Keith I love yah thanks for your service but your time in Atlanta is up Go after Lance Briggs while he is available Trade Keith To Bears for Lance they would love it .

So we get to crux of the matter. The way he talks. The way he dresses. What’s a matter, Notme? Is Vick not one of the “good ones” in your eyes? Then again, who are the “good ones” in your eyes, and in the eyes of the IRF? The ones who look and act like Tiger Woods. But Tiger married a white chick, so y’all can’t consider him a “good one” anymore, right? So who’re are the “good ones.”

Look, I dont’ think Vick is Johnny Unitas either, but this constant whining is not gonna get anybody anywhere. I blame Arthur Blank for mortgaging the Falcons future for a running Quarterback but I still think we can make the most of it and get some DE’s, DT’s, G’s, and T’s and of course a safety to solidify this team. I wish women flocked to me like they do Brad Pitt but I live in reality, they flock to me like the short bald guy on Seinfeld. LIVE WITH IT PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to see the Falcons trade the number 10 pick to the Patriots for their two first rounders, numbers 24 and 28. We should then be able to get two quality guys, hopefully Chris Houston, CB and either Charles Johnson, DE or Justin Blalock, OG. Move Jimmy Willams to safety. I would also trade Schaub to Oakland for their second round pick this year and a second next year. That would allow the Raiders to draft CJ and keep him out of the hands of the Bucs. We need picks and we need bodies. Trading everything to move up to get CJ would be a very bad move. We are more than one player away from groing to the Super Bowl.

First off to the comments that Jenkins made with Fox that someone was nice enough to point out…all he said is that at times it was tough with Vick at QB, because the offense he did not know whether to block or if Vick was going to throw the ball 60 yards down the field. I do not believe it was anything negative directed towards Vick, just the offense (and the defense too actually) lacked direction the last two years. Also comparing Vick to Sprewell or Artest.. they are to totally different character types. Vick has had his faults, a few juvenile acts, like many other young pro athletes white or black. And all you people praising Dan Reeves… he was not that great of a coach… in Denver it came down to either he went or Elway was leaving. In Atlanta…yes he took them to the superbowl… and yes to the playoofs with Vick. He could not overcome adversity though. Jamal ANderson went down…season in the toilet. Mike Vick went down…and blame it all on Doug Johnson if you like… he did a subpar job… but remember a 17-0 lead against the Skins… and a 21-0 lead against the Titans… and mamny more 7 point halftime leads that were squandered due to poor calls by Reeves and the boys. Fact is in his tenure Atlanta had only 2 winning seasons. Not entirely his fault, but a lot of the blame goes to him for players lost, because after all he was the GM. Him and Vick really did not get along to well either…anyone remember the Houston game when Vick was coming off the injury when Reeves did not bring Vick in after halftime? Vick throwing the helmet… I think this year will be the first “REAL” test Vick has ever had. A little coaching and the right system can go a long ways. Let’s be fair to Vick and the recievers for Atlanta. I do feel that there are those out there that call themselves fans that would love to see him fail so they can say ” I told you so”… lets not make race a determining factor on if Vick stays or goes… the only thing that should matter is whether he is capable of taking this team to where they need to be.

Thanks for the update Steve. Glad to see a football relevant article. On to the draft. I really think the Falcons should not play around with the #10 pick. Go ahead and draft either Nelson or Landry, preferably Nelson. As far as drafting CB, I don’t see one worthy of the #10 pick. People are talking about Chris Houston. A fast 40 time does not make a NFL CB. Ask Allen Rossum. I like looking at production and a player’s playmaking ability on the field, not workout numbers. We need a FS. We don’t have one on the roster. If the team is going to play bump and run coverage, a ball-hawking FS with excellent range is needed. That’s Nelson. I love the way the guy plays. And for those that say that picking Nelson at ten is too early, let’s go back to last year’s draft. The draft experts killed Buffalo for taking SS Donte Whitner at #11. Now everyone around the league is saying that he will be a fixture at the position for the next 10 years. They then went and stole FS Ko Simpson in the 4th, a player I hoped the Falcons would have drafted. Now they are set at the safety position.
I know that the team is in need of a DE. The draft is deep in that position. A good one will be there in the second round, probably Charles Johnson out of Georgia. I hope he is. As far as MLB, I really don’t know about Brooking being able to man the position. He prefers the WLB position, but I really believe Petrino wants Williams in that position. If Keith does not perform at MLB, he might not be with the team much longer. Let’s face it, he is no longer the best option at WLB, sorry. Also, can the team find a place for LB Tony Taylor. You talk about playmaking, the guy had 7 ints. from the LB position last year.

kg, I agree with your Blalock pick. This guy can play OG and guard. Exactly what we need, a versatile lineman with size and talent. If we play this Schaub thing right, the team could have three of the first 42 picks in the draft. That is three STARTERS!!!A FS (Nelson), a OL (Blalock), and a DE (C. Johnson).

Nothing against Charles Johnson, but we need more size opposite Abraham. Carriker’s my man (6’6”, 296), solid against the run and a pretty good rusher.

some people have some good ideas for draft day. I am not for taking Nelson at #10… really just need to see the mood of the draft. If Nelson is the Falcons man, and Peterson is still available at #10.. then trade the #10 pick for a later first round pick and a 3rd rounder. As long as Atlanta stays in the top 20 they should be able to grab Nelson. A Schaub trade should not be discussed until draft day. See who Oakland takes first, and Detroit takes second. Maybe after Detroit has picked, then offer Cleveland Schaub and the #10 pick for their #3. That is only if Atlanta has any desire to aquire Calvin Johnson. If Oakland takes Calvin Johnson fist overall Atlanta should offer Oakland Schaub for their 2nd round and a 2nd or a 3rd next year. I do not think Houston would be a good choice…sure he is fast, but I believe Ross out of Texas has much better cover skills. Hughes out of Cali I think is going to be a steal in the second. One advantage Atalnta has, is Jimmy Williams can play corner or safety. This draft has more talent at safety than corner, so they may be better served to wait until the 3rd or fourth round to take a D-Back. Also look for Deshaun Wynn with mayybe a fourth round pick. He is a big and physical enough to be effective in short yardage, yet he is explosive enough to break the 15-20 yard runs. I like Michael Bush, but really do not see them drafting a running back before the third round, and Bush will be gone by then. They also need to be looking at a back-up QB…(if Schaub is traded).Tyler Palko or Jordan Palmer may be good 5th round selections. Atlanta’s biggest need on defense right now is a D tackle. If there is no trade up in the first round Okoye is the man. If they do not take a DT in the first round… look for them to go after Tyler from NC ST with the 2nd pick. One thing right now that is interesting, and will impact the later rounds for the Falcons is the status of Morton Anderson. From what I understand is he has no desire to return to football.

In my obsevation of the falcons over the last two years, The had no heart on defense. That is where the need is, primarily at the point of attack positions, middle linebacker and d-end. No disrespect to Brooking, whom i think is good at outside L.B., He is not a MLB. The Falcons need attack players at M.L.B and D-end

hey, if Vick gets hurt this year, and there’s always a good chance at it, we need a real QB as a backup, I’d love to see the falcons with a real QB, I’m tired of this Dominique Wilkins crap for a QB, if you want Kordell Stewart or Snoop Dogg then fine, and this isn’t racist YOU MAROONS, IT’S ABOUT QUARTERBACKING…..GET IT Q U A R T E R B A C K I N G. Mike Vick is not a good QB, which is what I’d like to see the Falcons get to win a Super Bowl. I agree with the poster earlier who said Steve McNair or Byron Leftwich, these people who spout off about race at the drop of a hat dont’ get it….it is about his lack of QUARTERBACKING skills that drive people crazy. Please don’t trade Schaub cuz if Vick goes down, we’re doomed, we need to build a team with a QB not a RB, I’d like us to start all over with a QB who passes better than anything else.

But Blank is stuck with the guy people. WE ARE STUCK WITH AN INFERIOR QB ON OUR TEAM FOR AN INDEFEINITE PERIOD OF TIME…….LIVE WITH THIS HARD FACT FOR CRYIN’ OUT LOUD AND JUST HOPE THAT WE CAN WIN DESPITE VICK, YOU KNOW SOME GREAT TEAMS HAVE WON SUPER BOWLS WITH AVERAGE OR BELOW AVERAGE QB’S, GRANTED MOST TEAMS HAVE SUPERIOR QB’S BUT THERE IS ALWAYS A CHANCE AN INFERIOR QB CAN BE ON A SUPER BOWL WINNER. I wonder if Petrino has a good idea where he wants to play Jimmy Williams. This could have a major impact as to how we draft. We all talk safety, but if Petrino thinks FS is the right place for JW, then CB would become a priority. How about Hall and Hall at CB’s?

I’m of the opinion that the “light” has come on and Vick and the entire team knows that their abysmal collapses of the past two seasons will no longer be tolerated.
Regarding coming in early for training: well, with the poor record and the astronomical salaries, one would expect them to put forth a little extra effort. Hope it pays off with 100% effort for 16 games.

We should draft DT with the # 10 pick. The 19 year old kid Akoye O. (sp) has a lot of upside. He’s not finished growing yet and we need to stop the run on a consistant basis. I think that will help the entire defense and keep opposing teams honest to a degree.

Man, Bobby Petrino is doing a good job with Atlanta Falcons. He is making sure the players are right. I think all the players have to do is give 100%, when the season start, and they can make a run 4 the superbowl. I think they should make a deal with the raiders. They should tell the raiders to take Calvin Johnson in the 1st round, then trade Calvin Johnson for Matt Schaub. I think you should try to get all the good wideouts they can. Make sure you get that defence right Bobby Petrino, and keep the good work up.

What the Falcons need is a few defensive playmakers, I’d love to see a LB come up and pop a RB good. We need a fireplug LB along the lines of Urlacher. We need a playmaking DE, a playmaking S, and a run stopping MLB, Boley and DMO are great for the outside spots. As far as Vick goes, he’s somewhere between what the haters and huggers think he is, he could definitely improve but without some D folks, it’s irrelevant.
