Starting Williams the smart move
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Sorry, folks. My bad on the lack of a blog yesterday. I thought I sent it into the good folks on the AJC.com desk, but I typed in a wrong letter in the server address and the blog never made it.
I’m going to stick with the same blog I meant to send because I think it’s definitely worthy of discussion — especially since many of you have been blogging about this for months.
The anticipated insertion of rookie cornerback Jimmy Williams into the starting lineup has arrived. Williams will start against the Carolina Panthers Sunday and, most likely for the rest of the season, unless he completely flops.
The Falcons drafted Williams (6-2, 215) out of Virginia Tech to combat bigger receivers like Carolina’s Keyshawn Johnson (6-4, 211) so they are going to see if their investment was worth it, even in a make-or-break time of the season. Allen Rossum (5-8, 178) had started at right cornerback for the past month, but teams have taken advantage of his lack of stature.
Williams has actually started three times this season, but against two-tight end packages or in nickel schemes. This is the first time he will open in the base defense. He will also remain on the field in nickel packages.
Though there might be some concerns starting Williams at this point, when the Falcons pretty much have to win their final two games to make the playoffs, but the coaching staff feels they don’t have anything to lose, especially since Williams has played well the past two games.
Williams is very physical at the point of attack and he is strong in run support. Williams is going to get beat at times — he does not have the burst out of his break like fellow corner and VaTechie DeAngelo Hall — but the Falcons are going to give him help over the top with a safety and in the slot at times with a linebacker.
This doesn’t seem like that much of a gamble to me, especially since Williams seems to have more potential to make a game-changing play, either with a fumble-causing hit or an interception, than Rossum or Jason Webster, the one-time starter who is recovering from a torn groin injury.

I just have no clue as to why this didn’t happen earlier. I realize Williams had a high ankle sprain, but Webster clearly wasn’t getting the job done earlier in the season. To waste a talent like Jimmy Williams on your bench is just absurd.

If Williams comes in and has a great game, Mora should be gone even if the Falcons make it to the Super Bowl. There is no reason Williams should not have been on the field earlier. Even as he learns how to play DB in the NFL, he is considerably better than the two midgets that have started in front of him.

I guess it took this long for the ammonia to dissipate enough for Mora to make an obvious decision. Too bad the ammonia was still affecting his brain at last week’s radio talk show from Seattle!

It’s a good move. But, why announce it?! K. Johnson is probably licking his lips right now thinking about a rookie guarding him. Keeping it a secret would’ve benefited Williams. Why give the other team a chance to game plan?

Good point Casey, but its an obvious attempt by Mora to win favor with the fans. The things the bloggers pointed out earlier in the year were ignored until last resort. Guess what, unlike what Jimmy Boy would have everyone believe, the fans are knowledgeble. At least 90% are. While they are at it, how about spreading the field to eliminate the spies they use on Vick, and having Beverly or Griffith rub are screen them out of Vicks path. Wouldn’t it be nice to see a gameplan that actually attacks the opponents weakness. Instead of trying to pound a 170lb injured RB 20 times how about taking 5 to 10 of those plays and insert some creativity into the offense. Not, gimmicks ie Schaub and over used option reads, but actual rub routes, inside shuffle screens, the throwback across the grain on rollouts. Man, a real coordinator would salivate with the things this offense can do with its unique personnel. And Mora, please have Donnatel bring heat from the first play to the last. If you let the most immobile QB this side of Bledsoe light you up, just hand in your resignation and don’t even return to the City and team you are using as a stepping stone to your ultimate dream job in the Northwest. Just get the hell out of town if you lose this one Sunday. You have managed to suck all the wind out of the Dome with this underperforming bunch!

This is a good move, and I trust Coach Mora decisions. If the rookie is now ready according to Mora and Donatell, then I trust that, and if he wasn’t until, I trust that also. Before continue to question Mora, let us be reminded of what happened to the Falcon franchise when we wanted Leman Bennet out of Atlanta. This talk of constantly questioning Mora and his method are silly. If anyone should be fired, let it be TERRENCE MOORE. Go birds Go!!!!

Sly Ty,
What solar system do you live in? Mora is on his way out of here because he is an idiot. J. Williams should have started a long time ago. Mora is making this move of desperation because he knows he’s outta here. Trusting Mora is like trusting Bugs Bunny not to eat carrots. Please don’t type anything like that ever again.

How a coaching staff could look at Webster and see him give up 3rd down conversion after 3rd down conversion then keep him out there is almost beyond me. I say “almost” because I know it is because Mora sold the GM on bringing him here with him from San Fran and he was playing politics to just have his pick play — even if it was killing the team.
I hope that the next coach is a TEAM COACH, and not some self-claimed “PLAYER’S COACH”. We need someone who thinks of the collective first, not last.
ANNOUNCEMENT: All fans please be sure to pick up Tuesday’s print version of the AJC (Sports Section) to view an important “Open Letter” to Arthur Blank regarding the direction of the team. It is the response to the 2003 advertisement where he promised a New Falcons era, following the infamous Monday night showing in St. Louis. The fans, referred to by Mr. Blank as “The 12th Man”, will finally have their say.

Birdy send me a reminder please vsu96sdd@hotmail.com. This move of inserting Jimmy Williams is LONG overdue. He CAN’T be worse than Jason “3rd Down Conversion Webster” or Allen “Hamstring” Rossum. I do not care if he makes a mistake and if he does I am still going to blame Mora/Zonatell for waiting so long to put him. The season was done when we lost to Detriot and Clevland so this could have been valuable playing time.

Hey Birdy, can I get in on some of what you have to say? If not directly, make sure you include that we the fans are tired of the head coach of this franchise acting like impudent, immature, spoiled brat in his dealings with the media, and we’re tired of the lack of discipline on this team that leads to at least one 15 yard flagrant unnescessary roughness penalty (specifically from MeAngelo Hall) every game for this team under his command.
Please, Birdy, include at least that much.
And Steve, how can you even show your face around these blogs after that joke of an interview that you “conducted” with Little Jimmy Mora?
You got some stones, Steve.
What, did Little Jimmy give you the questions that he wanted you to ask him?
Well, instead of trying to do what you were trying to do, which was make us feel sorry for him, it backfired, Steve.
He came off more like a spoiled brat, born with a silver spoon in his mouth, given everything; earned nothing, impudent, immature, and petulant child than he has ever come off before.
So congratulations. Your little attempt at yellow journalism has backfired.
We don’t like being told what we should think or feel about this guy.
You did everything you could, short of giving him a box of tissues to put him in the best light instead of conducting an honest and hard hitting interview.
Soft. It was soft, soft as marshmallows, and you should be ashamed to have your name attatched to it.

Hey guys… I am a HUUUUGE Atlanta Braves fan, but not a Falcons fan. But from the outside looking in, it seems to me that the Falcons are not a well coached team. I mean, bottom line for me, is when they were 5-2 earlier in the year and then lost BACK TO BACK games against the BROWNS AND LIONS! How does that happen? To me, it is bad coaching. If you don’t get your teams well prepared and serious about playing bad teams, you get beat in this league. And I just think with the talent they have, the Falcons should be a shoe-in for the playoffs every year. When a team isn’t performing up to their potential, that’s a COACHING PROBLEM, PERIOD!

I have to go along with the consensus on starting williams. Now, I realize none of us has seen enough of Williams to do an effective evaluation of his strengths and weaknesses. Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t imagine how he could’ve been any more ineffective than Rossum or Webster. Conceivably Williams would’ve improved with playing time, but they got worse the more they played.
Experience should tell us, if Donatell insists on playing his beloved soft zone cover DEF, Williams won’t fair any better than the others. The success of Williams, and the entire DEF, will depend on Donatell more than any other factor.

After reading these blogs, I see that many of you feel the same way I do about this whole situation. Jimmy should have been inserted as soon as Webster started messing up, which was around week three or four. I agree with another blogger as he stated that much of the teams struggles has to do with Donatells scheme. When we lost our pass rush due to injuries, a more aggressive scheme should have been adopted to offset the lack of pass rush generated by our front four. That means more aggressive corner play (bump and run). Williams M.O. coming out of Va Tech was physical play. Why not put your best athletes on the field in situations where they have a chance to succeed. Allen Rossum should have been yanked as soon as Williams got healthy. Rossums play along with Donatell’s passive scheme and his refusal to play Jimmy cost the Falcon’s a win against Dallas. If Jimmy plays “lights out” these next two games and we don’t make the playoffs Donatell and Mora should be gone by Sunday evening following the Eagles game. I’ll save my case against Knapp for another day.

About damn time Jimmy Williams became the starter. I can understand if he had Chris McAlister and Samari Rolle in front of him, but it’s not like our veterans have been playing so well that we couldn’t find any time for J-Will. Even if Williams turns out to suck, I would much rather see him get burned than Webster or Rossum, because at least Williams is a rookie and is gaining valuable experience. Webster and Rossum are only proving that they suck at covering #1 and #2 receivers.
After Webster proved his lack of ability in the first couple of games, we should have inserted Williams in the lineup then. Hall, Williams and Mathis, barring injury, should have been our top 3 corners.
Then again, if Donatell refuses to blitz and continues rushing 4 guys on every play and playing a soft zone, it probably won’t matter who we have at corner. You can have Ronnie Lott and Deion Sanders at corner, but if you are playing zone and getting no pass rush you are going to get burned, plain and simple.

Dontell would do well playing for Marty Schottenheimer. He’s so conservative he makes Sean Hannity look like Noam Chomsky. Williams should’ve been playing from the get go (others have said “as soon as Webster started to be ineffective;” hasn’t he sucked all along?). By this point he’d be experienced enough to help us make a playoff run. Yeah, he’ll get burned some, but having a tall, fast, physical DB with potential taking his licks early makes a hell of a lot more sense than having older, short, slow DB’s get burned anyway. I really can’t believe these @$$-holes got hired to coach in the first place. DeCamillis is the only one woth keeping.

I’m a little new to this whole “blog” thing but I’m a lifetime Falcons fan. Anyway, here’s my thoughts; I can understand sitting a rookie quarterback, there’s a lot to learn. Playing corner on the otherhand is understanding your assignment and relying on your instincts and abilities. Apparently Williams has those, after all he was drafted in the first round. Now for the past 2 years, we saw what Webster could and more importantly could not do. Rossum is a return specialist for a reason, 1. he’s good at it and 2. as we now know, he’s not a great corner. Williams unknown potential far out ways the known talents of those two. So if our coaching staff had any asspirations of reaching the playoffs, why wasn’t Williams inserted earlier in the season to adapt to the speed of the game and gain confidence in himself. If the coaches were that unsure of him and his abilities, why was he drafted in the first round? I saw then the two sides of our coaching staff. Post draft: “this kid is great. Desired size, skill and toughness. He can be a great playmaker.” Post preseason: “he’s not quite ready, 4’6” Webster gives us our best chance” and now; Post my jobs on the line: “Williams gives us our best chance to help cover the larger recievers that have hurt us all season” Now correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t Keyshawn with Carolina at the beginning of the season? The same Keyshawn that Williams is build to defend, not to mention drafted for. Now I can understand that he might have gotten burnt a few times by the veteran, but think of the experience it would have given him. Going into the playoff stretch, jobs on the line, I would much rather have the Williams with experience covering Keyshawn, than the one that “hopes” he can make an impact. I have a lot more to say but my fingers are getting tired, sorry for rambling.

When Williams was drafted there was a whole lot of discussion about whether or not he could even play corner or would have to moved to safety. I guess we will see on Sunday. But unless the Falcons can pressure the QB, no CB in the league can cover a receiver forever and I don’t expect the defensive schemes called by Donatell to change.
As far as Chris McAlister goes, I have seen enough Ravens’ games to know he gets beat repeatedly . He benefits from an outstanding pass rush and some really atheltic linebackers.

Sometimes it seems that our coaching staff is sleepwalking through the season. How can any sane coaching staff watch Webster and Rossum “attempt” to defend receivers game after game and not insert Williams into the lineup until only two games remain. Jimmy Williams should have been in the starting line up on opening day, quite frankly. Did they think that by keeping Webster out there he was going to magically transform himself into a good corner back somehow? This coaching staff is clueless and should be replaced at season’s end. And I mean ALL of them!

To go to the superbowl this year, all Atlanta has to do is run the quarterback sneak every play. No defense would ever figure another team would do that, and they’d all be crushed by crunch time. Ve would taken over der fooseball verld!!!!!!

It make sense to start Jimmy Williams since he is much more physical than Rossum - Keyshawn Johnson would be a handfull for a 5-8 corner - we might find out he is a hand full for a rookie corner, but it is worth a shot.

This is some of the funniest stuff that I have ever heard. And the one about 90% of the fans can outcoach the coaches. If you people can coach so well, why is Mora the coach and not you. You couldn’t coach your way out of a paper bag. If Jimmy Williams gets burned you will blame that on the coach and say that he should have played Rossum. Or that this was Mike Vick’s fault. Maybe our players should make some plays, or is that too hard for them. Maybe the OL should block for the QB, receivers catch the ball and defense stop somebody sometimes. If we can’t do these things it will not matter who the coach is. The NFL is a copycat league and the next coach will coach just about the same as this coach , then we will fire him in 3 years and repeat this cycle. Our players need to step up if they are professionals. If the coach has to tell them every single thing that need to do then they shouldn’t be in the NFL. GO FALCONS, LETS WIN IT ALL

Both played the whole game and did not deserve to. Donatell’s defense is soft and Knapp is as uncreative as they come. I never want to say another man should be fired but they have not gotten the job done.

I saw Sam Crenshaw Kiss Vick’s a$$ on that joke of a show Fan to Fan last night There was nothing about Mora, nothing about Vick’s accuracy or the reciever drops. Instead it was all about personal statistics and great of a year Vick is having. Brett Favre doesn’t care a thing about his totals or how many times he has been to the pro bowl, does he?. It really peepee’s me off when I see Vick with a big smile jawing with the opposing team right after a big fat falson loss. Hell, they ran a clip of Him making a pretty run against none other than Detroit. I was embarrassed for the whole team Thanksgiving and would have rather not seen that film again in my life if I were a Falcon. All I can think of is how bad Mike Williams schooled the crap mouthy Deangelo all day in a horrible loss. Statistics mean nothing—-its wins versus losses and right now the falcons are a 5. Yeah a five out of ten, meaning your boobs are slightly lopsided, you drink a lot, your easy, your short, 15 pounds overweight, and talk too much. lets get it together and take care of business then we can talk the doody

why is it that we wait until the third or fourth quarter to put pressure on the opposing quarterback-is that kind of like scripted plays on defense? i just don’t understand that. i mean i know our secondary is bad, but some of the blame has to be on our lack of pressure from our ends, linebackers and lineman which in turn puts blame on donatell. everyone says fire mora, which in some regard i agree, but i also think much of the blame has to be put on his coaches. and while were talking about defense, what is the deal with john abraham, i mean what a rip-off. he has been dominant in one game this season, boy the jets look really smart in getting rid of him. what a dissapointment, you really can’t blame falcons’ managment for that trade, i remember thinking that was going to be the key improvment to our defense.

I cannot believe the absolute stupidity of Donatell. With 2nd and 29yds to go, he calls his beloved soft zone cover DEF, and gives up a 21yd pass play. Like I’ve said before, it doesn’t matter who plays CB, Donatell’s DEF philosophy will make him ineffective.
For those who taped the game, watch the replay of the 2nd qtr INT. Notice how MJenkins was simply trotting accross the field and made no effort to help a scrambling Vick. It appears Vick was waiting for Jenkins to speed up and get open, but he didn’t. At the last min, he tried to hit Crumpler, which led to the INT. With the exception of Crumpler, our REC’s don’t know how to run routes against NFL DB’s. We are using 2nd and 3rd level REC’s as primary REC’s(remember Peerless Price).

I’ve never hated a team I have loved in my life…but as they say, first time for everything!!! I hate to watch this team. They’re sick. Absolutely no heart! Yes, the coaches should all be fired, but everyone of these players should be taken out and beaten! ALL OF THEM! I’ll be d**ned if I go to a single game next year.

Vick gags like a maggot on 3rd down when we had to have it. He throws it 10 feet over the head of a wide open Jenkins at the Panther 20yd line. Dont give me this Mike Vick is great bs. He lead his team to 3 big points in a MUST WIN game. Real clutch Vick u piece of garbage

10-3, you tell me that we lose a game that could get us into the playoffs by 10-3, that’s heart and coaching, bye coaching staff donatell and his no run defense, knapp and his running the ball with 2 minutes left while down by 7, and mora wants to go to washington

Can you believe with 1st down and 2:04 mins remaining, Knapp calls for a run 2 of the next 3plays. His play selection forced the team into a 3rd and long situation. However, if Vick hadn’t overthrown his REC, it would have been mute. WITH TODAYS AWFUL DISPLAY, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO QUESTION THAT MORA, AND THE COACHING STAFF HE HIRED, HAS TO GO. I AM TOTALLY FED UP, AND I KNOW MOST OF THE FANS ON THESE BLOGS FEEL THE SAME. WHAT A GROSS MISUSE OF TALENT AND OPPORTUNITY.

a) Pete Carroll isn’t exactly proven as a winner in the NFL b) He’s going to Arizona to be reunited with Matty and stay out west c) There are some proven winners out there. Would Jimmy Johnson come for $6 m a year? Would Reeves come back? Will Jeff Fisher be available? Many believe Gregg Williams got a raw deal in Buffalo. Bring him in then make Martz a record offer for OCs? We don’t have time to groom another young one.

One more comment. Did anyone notice how JWilliams played. It took our coaching morons 14gms to accept, not recognize, his talents. Donatell held Williams back because he didn’t accept his response to playing his beloved zone. With Williams playing primarily man coverage, he was able to make outstanding plays at, and behind, the line.

You hit the nail on the head with both comments TEDDY JACK EDDY. What has RMoss done to earn any consideration? He has had nothing but problems every since CCarter left Minn. He is nothing more than a glorified version of ALelie. Neither one can run effective routes with any precision. We don’t need another one of those.

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m cautious of his character, and maybe i’m letting the frustration of the past 2 seasons get to me…but I’m tired of all this talent being wasted. I know a lot of the problems are coaching, but the players have to take a lot of blame too. I would love to see a big, fast receiver for Vick to throw too…a real offensive line, and our QB to stop taking ridiculous sacks!

for god´s sake….that is the worst excuse of a football team!! the buc´s have been showing up to play. how can anybody defend the play calling ,considering the amount of talent that the falcons´suppose to have. when reeves was fired was because mckay conditioned his coming to atlanta if and only reeves was out. he wanted a coach he could manage , this is the result….might as well had taylor smith running the team.

I think I’ve figured out why Mora has been unable to recognize that his coaching staff, and now his team, are incompetent. Mora, Sr put his foot in his mouth, by calling Vick a coach killer. After seeing how Mora,Sr’s big mouth cost him his job and any prestige his may have had, Mora,Jr quickly followed in dads footsteps. Mora,Jr’s comments, along with awful coaching, may cost him his job as well.
I don’t think he seems to be able to see the error of his ways, nor anyone elses for that matter. He reminds me of that white house moron we now jokingly refer to as mr. president.

Steve, Does St. Louis have to lose as well for us to get in the playoffs? You changed your article last night. At first you did not mention them, then you stuck them in there saying they had to lose. Which is it? Who do they play? Please give us the WHOLE story.

Williams and the defense did a good job Sunday but the offense must have stayed on the off switch since they did not move the ball. The NFL also needs to get refs who know the rules. How can you call roughing the kicker when the player is blocked into the kicker? The fans supported the team till it seemed we gave up. Vick got more than his share of boos but he does not call the plays. The powers that be for the Falcons must determine fault for the failure of this season.

Fire Mora….give Schaub a legitimate shot at being the starting QB over Vick…keeping in mind that Vick is 6 years older now and his legs WILL begin to grow heavier as he ages, it’s just a matter of time. If we lose Schaub will he be the next Favre????
Oh by the way, when does Spring Training start????

That game was absolutely disgusting. The Giants and Cowboys lose, and the Panthers try as hard as they can to give us this game. Wow. To top it off, Williams plays like a corner that would obviously have been a dramatic improvement all season over anyone but maybe Mathis. If Knapp and Donatell are still here next season…well, they won’t be. Blank is too concious of the fans’ feelings to do that. This loss can be seen as a Christmas present in disguise; if we had won convincingly at home and just barely lost to Philly these clowns might have kept their jobs. Hopefully this debacle cemented the deal.

Fire Mora and staff.
Trade Vick to Raiders for draft picks and get Calvin Johnson.
Get a good coach who can come in and take the legitimate talent we have and, with Schaub at QB, mold this team into an annual playoff contender.

Jimmy Williams is a speed demond, much like Vick and Norwood. It’s a shame that the team did not continue to keep him in the lineup much earlier in the season when all of the problems started accuring.
Because of his size he is able to stay on top of those much heavier than he is.
On the sprint route’s he really impressed the coaches and he has a quiet personality about himself, perfers not to be the center of attention. But I am sure that will change with time.

I can’t believe the comments by DeAngelo Hall regarding Williams. He said “all he did was make a couple of tackles and that he still has a lot to prove”. This from a man who has gotten burned so often he needs to bathe in sunblock. How many tackles has DeAngelo made? I believe he’s missed more tackles than he’s made. What about DH letting TO spit in his face and get away with it. What a punk! If he didn’t retalitate on the field immediately he should have been waiting for TO outside the locker room. Again I say, what a punk.

Please fire and/or beg someone to take Vick’s sorry a…… maybe Oakland. Get a quarterback to fit the scheme of the coaching staff. No legit coach would suck up to this punk…..
