Norwood’s return a relief

Part of the Falcons’ tailback concerns seemingly have been eased with Jerious Norwood’s return to practice Thursday. Starter Warrick Dunn (calf) did not practice.

Coach Jim Mora said the playing status of both players would be determined shortly before Atlanta’s game Saturday night against Dallas at the Georgia Dome.

If Dunn can’t play —- as a gutsy veteran at this point of the season, I’d guess he would try - it will be interesting to see if Atlanta would start Norwood, a rookie.

He is the heir apparent and has played very well this season, however, he has only seen spot duty and has not had to do a ton of blocking, especially in pass protection.

The other option would be fullback Justin Griffith, who has far fewer carries than Norwood, is far less explosive but has the experience, size and savvy to handle the multitude of responsibilities.

This is a huge game for the Falcons and if they open with Norwood, it would show how much confidence they have in him. With him being less than 100 percent, though, Atlanta might want to ease his load and rotate him with Griffith instead of asking him to be the main ball carrier.

As for quarterback Michael Vick playing tailback, I’m guessing that would be a gimmick scenario that might be used once, if at all.

this is a relief. now we can get some newsworthy stories from the Falcons instead of this nonsense. No other quarterback in the NFL is subjected to this much prejudice but Vick.

I’d be more comfortable with startng Griffith. I’m not to sure about Norwood’s pass blocking, either.

la,

What does this have to do with prejudice? Do you only call it prejudice because you and MV are black? Did anyone yell prejudice when the Jags turned Matt Jones ( a pretty good college qb)into a receiver. No, that is where he fit the best for the team.

I think the AJC should monitor comment’s like the one G-Money just posted. I don’t agree with “la”, but I’m starkly offended by G-Money. Please remove these comments and his access. AJC, is this what you stand for?

Great that Norwood returned. I still want to see Griffith though, we is a harder runner between the tackles.

I’d like to see them give Griffith and Norwood about half the carries each. It would be similar to how they used to use Dunn and Duckett — the speed guy for a while, then the power guy. Griffith can break some tackles, and we all know what Norwood can do. Mix it up and throw their defense off balance — they are already going to be worried about Vick running the ball to begin with, in fact I’d be surprised if Roy Williams didn’t spy Vick all game.

More importantly, I’d like to see this team use their tailbacks in the passing game more often. I highly doubt that Dallas has a linebacker who can match up with Norwood or even Griffith one-on-one. Considering the problems our receivers have running routes and holding on to the ball, I would think swing patterns, screens, and the occasional wheel route would do a lot to throw Dallas off their defense and maybe open some deep pass plays against their safeties, who are pretty questionable in coverage. Then again, I’m sure we can expect a lot of 3 yard fade routes in the red zone to Ashley Lelie as well, because last I checked Greg Knapp was still our offensive coordinator.

I feel the falcons must win this game. The focus should be on starting fast. The reason I have seen for stalls in drives is early drops by the WRs. We can get on Knapp for bad calls, but the players have to execute. Vick has to throw decent balls and the WRs have to catch them.

Good news! of course, this is after a post that encouraged a lot of morons to repeat, “vick should be RB, vick should be WR, etc.” of course, what amazes me about those idiots is, for some reason that I can not explain, is they think they know more than the coaches and other people involved in the NFL. what a bunch of losers.

Of course the Falcons will focus on starting fast….that’s ALWAYS the focus. But the problem is throwing for an incomplete pass on 1st down, running up the middle for no gain, then having 3rd and long…and for this offense…that equals….PUNT! I would like to see the birds mix it up a bit. Why not some misdirection??? 1st down…split Norwood out..have him come in motion, run a reverse…or maybe even a HB pass across the field to Jenkins, or even back to Vick. Of course Knapp probably has something ignorant in store. But as always, I will be pulling hard for my birds with my D-Hall jersey on. Also, AJC…look at posts like Doc Hill’s…no reason to allow crap like G-Money. I do understand a lot of people believe Vick gets criticized because he’s black. And everyone is entitled to their own opinion(no matter how ignorant), but the post like G-money’s is disgusting and should not be allowed. Show some class AJC.

G-money sit your five dollar a$$ down before I make change

A World w/out Blacks

A very humorous and revealing story is told about a group of white people who were fed up with African Americans, so they joined together and wish themselves away. They passed through a deep dark tunnel and emerged in sort of a twilight zone where there is an America without black people. At first these white people breathed a sigh of relief. At last, they say, no more crime, drugs, violence and welfare. All of the blacks have gone!!

Then suddenly, reality sets in. The “NEW AMERICA” is not America at all only a barren land! There are very few crops that have flourished because the nation was built on a slave-supported system. There are no cities with tall skyscrapers because Alexander Mils, a black man, invented the Elevator, and without it one finds great difficulty reaching high floors. There are few if any cars because Richard Spikes, a black man, invented the Automatic Gear Shift. Joseph Gammell, also black, invented the Super Charge System for Internal Combustion Engines, and Garrett A. Morgan invented the Traffic Signals. Furthermore, one could not use the Rapid Transit System because its precursor was the electric trolley, which was invented by another black man by the name of Elbert R. Robinson. Even if there were streets on which cars and a rapid transit system could operate, they were cluttered with paper because an African American, Charles Brooks, invented the Street Sweeper.

There were few if any newspapers, magazines and books because John Love invented the Pencil Sharpener, William Purvis invented the Fountain Pen, Lee Burridge invented the Type Writing Machine and W. A. Lovette invented the Advanced Printing Press. They were all, you guessed it, black. Even if Americans could write their letters, articles and books, they would not have been transported by mail because William Barry invented the Postmarking and Canceling Machine, William Purvis invented the Hand Stamp and Phillip Downing invented the Letter Drop.

The lawns were brown and wilted because Joseph Smith invented the Lawn Sprinkler and John Burr the Lawn Mower. When they entered their homes, they found them to be poorly ventilated and poorly heated. You see, Frederick Jones invented the Air Conditioner and Alice Parker the Heating Furnace. Their homes were also dim. But of course, Lewis Latimer invented the Electric Lamp, Michael Harvey invented the Lantern and Granville T. Woods invented the Automatic Cut-off Switch. Their homes were also filthy because Thomas W. Steward invented the Mop and Lloyd P. Ray, the Dust Pan. Their children met them at the door barefooted, shabby, motley and unkempt. But what could one expect? Jan E. Matzelinger invented the Shoe Lasting Machine, Walter Sammons invented the Comb, Sarah Boone invented the Ironing Board and George T. Samon invented the Clothes Dryer. Finally, they were resigned to at least have dinner amidst all of this turmoil. But here again, the food had spoiled because another black man, John Standard, invented the refrigerator.

Now, isn’t that something? What would this world be like without the contributions of Black people? Martin Luther King, Jr. said “that by the time we leave for work we have been dependent on half the world & modern America is created by dependencies on the inventions from the minds of Black folks”. Black history includes more than just slavery, Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey and W.E.B. Dubois.

Im a black man,and I for one am not even gonna dignify a response to that piece of trash..Because Neno Brown did it all for me,thanks bro.. But,its 4:29am in the morning, and I hear the disturbing news on the falcons web among the chatters, that Coach Mora is flaunting his a#* for the Huskies job?? I read the text and heard the interview..

**Audio: http://www.lloydchristmas.net/morafull.mp3

Interviewer: If there’s an opening, and you’re available, we want you to coach the Huskies.

Mora: Well, I really have a lot of respect for Ty, and I know he’ll do a great job. But if he ever decides to move on, and get in the NFL or you know, go back to Notre Dame or whatever, if that job’s open you’ll find me at the friggin’ head of the line with my resume in my hand ready to take that job.

Interviewer: If you’re available.

Mora: It doesn’t even matter if I’m available.

Interviewer: So if you just won the Super Bowl, and it’s available, you’re there?

Mora: I’d be there

Interviewer: You’re there, okay.

Mora: I’d do it, I promise you that. Now, I want to see Ty succeed, and I want to see that program succeed. But if he decides at some point that he’s ready to move on and they want me, I will be there. I don’t care if we’re in the middle of a playoff run, I’m packing my stuff and coming back to Seattle.

Interviewer: So, are you saying…

Mora: You know, it’s funny, and I mean that, and I’m dead serious, the further I get away from it the more I’m drawn to it. You know, that’s the job I want, so…

Interviewer: You would leave the Falcons for that job?

Mora: Absolutely.

Interviewer: Wow.

Mora: Yeah. As I sit here, I’m looking at a Husky helmet. **

Hey Y’all:

You guys need to get off this blog talking this color/racism thing. If you know it or not, you are worshiping idols/eye-dolls). You are worshiping something that is pleasant to the eye, the color of your skin, in this case, more than GOD. Worshiping the color of your skin: black, white, other is a form of idol worshiping in the worst kind. And we know, if you believe in the Bible, idol (eye-doll) worshiping is an abominiation to God and is the devil’s work and the END of us all. Therefore watch out with that racism stuff, black, white or other dur you are signing your eternal death warrant. DON’T LOVE THE COLOR OF YOU SKIN MORE THAN GOD!!! Love one another.

Michael Vick put out his ajc PR crap again trying to regain from his fame profanity with his finger to the fans that pay his 100 million dollars. We need this game. We cannot depend on beating Philly and Carolina the next two weeks. We desperately need to get on a role. Realizing that were working with a depleted backfield, our passing game must be at it’s best. Roy Williams is known for cheating up early, so we must make the Cowboys pay with misdirection, deep out-post routes and using our backs in passing situations. Nobody believes we can be this thing together. I’ve been burned by the falcons before but I’m still holding on to what little faith I’ve go left. GO Birds!!!!!!

Mora taking a job with the University of Washington Huskies? A buddy of mine called me about it. It sounded ridiculous but I had to listen to it. So Mora was on this AM Seattle Sports Radio show recently and said he would drop the Falcons for a UofW Huskies job. At first I thought it was out of jest, but he went on saying he would leave Atlanta if the UofW offered him a job. What’s up with that? There is a lot of talk in the interview about the Falcons, the NFL, and his Dad. The UofW comments are near the end of the interview. The interview can be heard on 950kjr.com, under Audio-Podcasts.

First up,

This forum really needs to be moderated. The comments on here is beyond offensive, it’s threatening.

I am looking into various options on this subject.

Now, as far as the Falcons game is concerned, I do not think that Norwood would carry the entire load at tail. He will probably get as many carries as he always had; and if Dunn doesn’t play, Griffith will probably get the start.

This game concerns me about Vick, though. Mike Vick wants to win this game, and his confidence in the receivers can get shaky really quick. If he feels like he has to do it all on his own, he will put himself in danger. He could get seriously hurt.

Now, if Norwood can play, that will take some of the pressure off Vick, because of the explosiveness of Norwood. But he will have to use Norwood as a pass option coming out of the backfield. Since Vick doesn’t audible on passing plays (stupid Knapp), Knapp will have to call that on the read. That concerns me, because it has not been on many reads in the offensive scheme.

Now, if I was the OC, I would have given Vick so much freedom, that the calling would be totally situational, and at the line. In other words, based upon what the defense shows, I would have had Vick to audible a play at the line, given a few scenarios… with no huddle. I’ll call my offensive scheme, Streetball.

Can you imagine a running team that calls plays primarily on the LINE??? With an elusive, explosive passing AND running QB like Vick? That is reading the defense and calling plays based upon what the DEFENSE shows them? As fast as Vick, Dunn, and Norwood is???

Let me tell you: to play defense against the Falcons would be a nightmarish aerobic exercise that will tire a defense to the nub by the 2nd quarter. Plus, the defense would not only have to scheme how to play against the offense, but also how to SUB against them!

But that would take an Offensive Coordinator that will relinquish a little control to the QB and that’s not gonna happen with Knapp.

Hey Steve Wyche, you better be careful when asking Mora about his latest idiotic comments. Don’t forget, this is around the time of year when Mora likes to throw headphones at reporters.

Seriously, what the hell is this guy thinking. It’s not like he’s such a great coach to where we can shrug off those comments because of the on-field performance. Coaching is the main reason the Falcons are underachieving, and a lot of that falls on Mora’s shoulders. Why the hell is he doing a radio show in Seattle the day before a huge game in Atlanta anyway? If I’m Arthur Blank, I’m telling Mora good riddance, take Greg Knapp to the Pac-10 with you, and then I’m getting down on my hands and knees and pleading with Lovie Smith to leave Chicago for Atlanta. In regards to visiting team fans filling our dome: It seems to me that a large portion of the Falcons so-called season ticket holders are actually ticket brokers. I know if I want tickets to a single game the only option I have is to purchase tickets through online autions or ticket brokers. I would suggest that cities not having this problem have a longer standing season ticket customer that pre-dated online auctions and ticket brokers. If that is the only way for the casual fan to get tickets it also means that out of town fans have the same access to the tickets as the local fans. Get the ticket brokers out of the season tickets.

Why do so many people still think Vick is so great? I just don’t get it. There is really only one possible answer.

Sure, he is a highlight reel waiting to happen, but that’s it. He rarely shows up against better than average defenses. His coaches get blamed for not calling a good game plan (sure worked well for Steve Young).

He get kudos all over the place for actually setting up a play with his receiver that was not sent in by the sideline (WOW!! Most QB’s do this by year two). He turns the ball over at about the same rate that he makes above average plays. He put his own agenda ahead of the team last year when he refused to run in order to try and prove he could be a passing QB.

Yet every time you hear a little criticism about him, people start crying prejudice and racism.

Come on people. Stop playing the prejudice card here and view him without bias as to his skin color. The simple fact is, he is a threat at QB because of his running, but on the whole he is just an average QB that presents a little bit of a scheming problem. Any good coach will give up his 80 yards rushing per game because they know that’s all he has. That’s it.

I am not saying Schaub is the answer, or even that the Falcons should consider getting rid of Vick. What I am saying is I just don’t understand why every time someone criticizes Vick, so many posters here immediately claim prejudice or racism.

Are you people doing this really that blind to reality or do you just have that much hatred built up that you are looking for an excuse to vent it??

OK, I have a confession, Norwood is related to me, and I think he is the answer to the future of the ATL backfield. And for T-Town, Matt Jones was not that good. He played in Fayatteville for Christ’s sake. He was a good athlete, but definitely not a good QB and he did not go to the National Championship game like MV, so shut your punk azz up.
