Lacking in the clutch

Here is a statistic that pretty much tells a lot about the Falcons: Atlanta has scored just 16 fourth-quarter points all season.

That is staggering. Eleven games in and all the Falcons have managed at money time is a touchdown, an extra point and three field goals.

Just looking at that number, it could tell you a lot of things, but mainly it says this team is not clutch. The fourth quarter often is when games are won, which leads to another point: Atlanta has not rallied to win a game this season.

It beat Pittsburgh on a Morten Andersen field goal in overtime, but it gave up the lead that allowed the game to go into the fifth period.

Couple that stat with the fact that they haven’t scored an opening drive TD this season and it suggests that they are often playing from behind and are incapable for stepping up in the 4th quarter. If it doesn’t get done in those 40 minutes from the 10 minute mark of the 1st quarter until the end of the 3rd, the game is done. All of that smacks of coaching & leadership to me. Coming out flat and failing to step up to make clutch plays at critical times. We need for the Titans to lose out so that hopefully Jeff Fisher will be made available. Now that’s a ball coach right there.

This video says it all:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4aUWrLAX3U

You can’t put up points if you can’t pass, and you can’t pass if your receivers can’t run routes, catch the ball, or stay on their feet.

The Falcons do not know who they are or what they are. They have no identity. So when the game is on the line, the players nor the coaches have a clue as to what they need to do to win! It’s like they are just stumbling around in the dark with no direction. Sad. This team needs discipline and leadership in the worst way.

There are some simple reasons along with the more comlicated ones for the lack of “clutch points.” When the Falcons have to run, they lack the size on the line to push the plie, and the other team can stack the line and not worry about the pass, beacuase the know the Falcons can’t do it. No matter how fast Vick is, if the team can’t complete passes and the other team knows it, they’ll be able to stop the run. They’ll spy Vick and stop him short.Dunn or Norwood need a step to get going. The Falcons’ line is easily penetrated, and those guys can’t even get started. It was also help to have receivers who weren’t like deer in a headlight when clutch times comes.

The you tube guy made good points. You could have blamed some things on Vick in the past, and he needs to tuck the ball in, but he’s improved a lot at quartrback. It really isn’t his fault. Take away half the dropped passes, and the team would have won two more games.

Vick can’t complete a big pass to save his life. It’s either a bad throw, a drop or both. I’m tired of reading all of the Vick-sucking that goes on with some Falcon fans. It’s a joke. He can’t throw worth a damn. We know the receivers stink. Still, he can’t throw worth a damn. He has a huge contract that he isn’t worth. Get over it and get rid of this bum, Blank.

NAME THE FALCONS’ STRENGTH?

  1. OFFENSE, NO
  2. DEFENSE, NO
  3. SPECIAL TEAMS, NOT

SHOULDNT WE BE GOOD IN AT LEAST ONE ASPECT OF THE GAME? I’M SURE LOVIE SMITH WOULDVE HAD A SOLID DEFENSE AND WITH VICK, OH BOY!

In all reality, the players coaches, and organization need to be reviewed. AJC has taken the players to task, yet there have been no articles on either Coordinators other than to say that Mora is sticking with his BFF.

Where is the interview with coordinators? where is the interview with McKay? He picked these receivers.

We’ve addressed the players. Let’s find out what else is going on.

I’d love to hear what Knapp has to say. I’d love to hear Donatell defend his soft zone defense. Here’s a hint, if you’re playing football and the scheme has the word “soft” in it, don’t use it.

Steve, we constantly ask for a story on Knapp and we get nothing. Is he off limits? Is Mora protecting his BFF?

The way the team is built, they knew going into the season that they can’t play from behind. The undersized lines mean that they must always be ahead. They can’t pass block to catch up, and they can’t stop the run when it’s time to be clutch either. Mora admited as much in the off season. Until they put some beef up front, they never will be a good fourth quarter team.

Hopefully, the trade rumors about Vick are true. Package him, Hartwell, and some 2nd round picks to Oak. for Moss, an off lineman and their next two first round picks. Play either Schaub or the Dawg, whichever gives us the best chance to win. With our picks next year we should get Calvin Johnson and spend the rest of our picks on help in o-line and defense.

Steve,

Where the hell is the story about Knapp?

Where is the story where this paper finally takes Knapp to task for not only screwing up Michael Vick, but for being the worst playcalling OC in football, and for running an offense which doesn’t let any of his QBs audible at the line of scrimage, thereby ensuring that the offense is never in the best position to play well or win the game?

Where’s the story that exposes Knapp for the inept coordinator he is; how everyone: players, fans, and media were all happy to see him leave San Francisco?

Where is the story that holds Greg Knapp responsible for his IMMENSE shortcomings?

hi, richard cory. interesting trade offer you just proposed. unfortunately, in the real world, well…….. name one nfl trade you have ever heard that resembles your absurd trade proposal….. when you graduate junior high school, you can come back on here and ask us for our permission to let you post again…… fantasy geeks, i tell you……

Birddawg, usually love and agree with most of your posts, except for the fact that you love to pat yourself on the back and that you love to champion yourself as the unashamed, self-proclaimed King Of I Told Y’All So. that gets really annoying and old. tone that crap down already…….

BUT it is not really steve’s job to take these guys to task. he is a reporter, not a columnist, as he has explained before.

your argument is not really with steve but more with terrence moore, bradley, schultz, & furman.

the reality is though that since they have opened up these blogs, do we all really need the AJC writers like Steve to tell us what to think about the team, coaches, and players.

i think they provide the forum and we all tell the whole world what we all think.

i think that the whole sports nation is paying more attention to what we all are saying on these blogs than what most of the AJC writers are writing on here.

To be honest, even though you are annoying sometimes, don’t you personally think that your posts have been more influential on what people think of the dawgs and the falcons than any of the articles written by any of the AJC writers this year?

Of course, you do Birddawg. Your ego is far too large not to think otherwise.

DO you really think that if Steve goes up to Knapp and says to Knapp, you’re a failure greg, aren’t you? you’re a failure, greg? why are you such a failure?, do you really think that you are going to get your dramatic matlock moment from steve out of knapp? it ain’t a few good men. knapp ain’t gonna yell at Steve: you can’t handle the truth. damn straight i ordered the code red. don’t come down here in your lilly white suit again. get over it already, birddawg. it just ain’t gonna happen.

I wish the AJC was far more aggressive than they usually are but i am tired of complaining about it already. it just ain’t that kind of media town. not when you only have one newspaper. the funny thing is how many posts you see from people about how negative & nasty the AJC writers are. this has to be one of the softest media markets around. the fans who complain about negativity always make me laugh because of how silly they sound.

all you are going to get out of the coaches is coach speak and all you are going to get out of the players is the bull durham cliches taught to nuke by crash.

with that being said, it is rather amazing though that the falcons have allowed the wide receivers to be thrown under the bus this week.

they do all seem to be saying the same exact thing though, almost as if they have been told by King Arthur what to tell the media.

i have never really seen this sort of thing where every member of the team, on offense and defense, has all their fingers pointed at the receivers.

i just have never really seen that thing.

i am quite sure it happens all the time privately but not publicly the way it is going down right now. It is very hard to believe.

I know they have been playing bad and I know they know they have been playing bad BUT since when does any controversy swirl around one or two or three players and the whole team has publicly turned on those players, and not one of those players speaks up and basically says F all of you, you all ain’t doing that great either.

You would expect at least one of them to respond in some form or manner in that way.

For it not to have happened already by white, jenkins, and lelie, tells you that this is all very rehearsed and orchestrated by King Arthur.

It is too weird and they are all saying the same exact speech to the media.

I think someone sat down with them and told them you all stunk it up last week, yes, no one is really playing all that well right now, but you guys sucked the worst, so you all are going to have to go out there and take some bullets publicly for this team to deflect some attention from all the problems going on with this team.

Now here is what you say: man, we’re terrible, we’ve hit rock bottom, man mike really tries hard, i’m sorry i keep letting him and the team down. they are all just too coincidentally sounding the same.

What makes this very clear is what King Arthur said to the Goose at the very end of the game last Sunday: we’ve got three first round wide receivers and none of them can catch the ball.

That told all of the players and coaches it was okay to publicly start firing all of the blame at the receivers to take attention away from the dozens of problems that exist with this team.

the WRs were just the most glaring problem right now (roddy white finally made it far too obvious for all of them last weekend.).

The reaction the WRs have had since then and their willingness to be public punching bags for their fellow players and coaches though tells you that someone sat them down and told them to take every last punch from their teammates.

William,

Here’s to hoping that the receivers do respond in some sort of form or manner this sunday.

BTW…Blank didn’t make it ok to point at the receivers. The receivers made it ok.

But when will it be ok to address this offensive line?

When will it be ok to address BOTH coordinators

When will it be ok to address why coach Mora doesn’t wear a headset. Why would a coach not want to know what plays are being run?! How can he possibly know who blew their assignment?!!!!!

When will it be OK to address the play of the secondary? I don’t care if our front four isn’t getting pressure. These are horribly blown plays!!

When will it be OK for coach Mora to tell Mike Vick to tuck the f*cking ball away when he runs?!!

When will the people of Atlanta become real fans and root for their team regardless?

When will the AJC interview Greg Knapp????????

Get A Clue is right, nobody will touch MV with that huge salary. After calming down, I really think this mess isn’t Vick’s fault as much as those tards we call receivers. I’m going ape crap if one of ‘em drops a single pass this week against the skins. I saw a GM commercial with Michael Jenkins. They threw him the keys—I’m surprised he didn’t drop those too. I don’t know how he can take money for what he and Roddey have done. Wouldn’t it be a surprise if he gave to Warrick’s foundation or that poor fire fighter that was killed just before Christmas and he had four children. How can you live with yourself Roddey—-your horrible—-get out of town. I respect Vick for not name calling. I’m frustrated right now 5-6 that sux, especially after being 5-2. Looks like the meltdown we had last year. Who’s fault was that?

They are not going to draft anymore more recievers (high round) they have already put thier money on the ones we got.

3 weeks ago this would have been characterized as “throwing under the bus” - now it’s not - because their play has reached an absurdly low level and that time has past. It aint no conspiracy. It’s time to light a damn fire under these soft-touches.

I have a DBs that the Falcons should be looking at. The falcons need to scout FVSU and the other schools in GA. The colts got a very good DB from FVSU….Nick Harper.

We have another a DB that may be better than Nick. The name is Rashod Moulton. The kid is 5-11 195 pounds and run a 4.3. He has played corner and free safety for FVSU. He also played RB and excel at returns(kicks and punts).

We have another DB. His name is Junior Taliaui. He is 5-11 210 and plays like the strong safety for the steelers. The boy loves to hit. In fact he also played LB in some situations.

While I am at it, CAU has a LB that is 6-3- 245 and run a 4.4. He bench 500 lbs. The guys is a player. These are the type of guys that we need to add to the team. We need guys that are big, fast, and strong.

Then we need to hire a DC that will let these guys get after people. With Rashod he can cover one on one. He will give us another DB that can cover one on one. If D. Hall and Jimmy Williams, step up to cover one on one, then Rashod can help provide coverage in the nickel or play free safety.

Rick..aka get a clue—thanks for the civil response. Kind of rare around here. I know the trade will not happen as mentioned, just wanted to give some parameters for discussion. People need to think outside of the box. If Vick is not happy here[fan hostilities} he may be willing[wanting?] a move. Oakland is a team that desperately needs some excitement[media]. They want to move Moss, this I know. The thought of Moss on one side, Calvin Johnson on the other, Alge at TE and Dunn or Norwood out of the backfield kinds of sounds good to me. I know about caps, but when agents and mgmt. get together on the same page, most of these things can be ironed out.[reworking contracts, extensions etc.] Any extra draft picks above C. Johnson would be icing on the cake. We can go down year after year with Vick, or maybe try something else.

If you discount the injuries, our OLine isn’t bad. The pass blocking would be much better if our OFF coaches would allow on field adjustments. (1)How often do we use 3-4 REC formations in 3rd down passing situations, and throw quick out passes? (2)How often do we use swing passes to our backs to offset the blitz? (3)How often do we use formations designed to spread the DEF and make blitzing difficult? The answer to these questions is, seldom and/or never.

Consider this: (1)Teams know they can cover our REC in man coverage, and they do, successfully. (2)Teams know our OC will not use our backs as REC’s, especially in 3nd down situations(these 2 factors alone allow teams to rush up to 7 men). (3)Teams know once their DEF is set, Vick isn’t allowed to change Knapp’s plays. (4)Teams know that the Falcons OC and/or REC’s coach doesn’t use quick hitting routes, especially on 3rd and long.

The bottom line, the limitations installed by our coaching staff is doing as much to hinder our OFF as the opposing DEF. The Falcons can put SB caliber talent on the field, but we lack the coaching talent to properly utilize it.

By brotha from anothamotha

December 3, 2006 08:07 AM | Link to this

See, what we need is to look at our stupid coaches. Arthur Blank should have hired Lovie Smith to coach the Falcons, but he had to cater to his white fan base.

Think about it: If we would have hired ANY of the black coaches out there, would we be going through this depleted offense? Would we be struggling at the offensive line? Would we not know what to do with Vick?

Of course not. Once again we have what has been going on in this country for hundreds of years: A black person who is more than qualified passed over in favor of a white person who isn’t.

And everyone knows this. That’s why these white bloggers are always calling out Vick, because they are once again masking the truth: That a white man’s incompetence is showing up EVERY SINGLE SUNDAY!

So what do they want to do??? Fire the superstar black man in Vick, who by his electrifying play is keeping the bills paid by keeping people in the seats, and keeping on the WORST OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR IN HISTORY in Greg Knapp, who’s a white guy!

And these white folks who want the flag turned back to the 1956 version is mad that people can see through their agenda.

So, all you people out there trying to be RATIONAL and trying to EXPLAIN what is the REAL problem in Greg Knapp, here’s my suggestion:

THEY AREN’T LISTENING TO YOU! THEY KNOW GREG KNAPP DESERVES TO BE FIRED. THEY ARE JUST TRYING TO KEEP THE WHITE GUY ON BECAUSE THEY HATE TO SEE A BLACK MAN HAVE SUCCESS!

THEY WANT THE FALCONS TO LOSE! THAT WAY THEY THINK THAT MATT SCHAUB WILL PLAY (which won’t happen. Schaub will never play as a starter in a Falcons uniform.)

OH, AND RIGHT NOW DJ SHOCKLEY IS BEING OUTFITTED WITH CORNROWS AND JEWELRY! REMEMBER, VICK USED TO HAVE THE SAME SENSE OF FASHION THAT SHOCKLEY HAD WHEN HE ENTERED THE NFL. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT VICK’S GIRLFRIEND WAS BLACK AND SHOCKLEY’S IS WHITE…

Brother from another mother: In the absence of a rational argument to support your position, you revert to race. How can you even bring this into a conversation involving professional sports where 75 percent of the participants are black? And, this was not brought up when the Birds were winning. It’s gets so weary having the race card played at every turn when everyone knows it’s a moot issue. Vick is Vick and Vick is going nowhere. He will stay here and run this franchise into the ground, regardless of who the coach is. You just can’t accept the fact that Vick has limitations and he’s not willing to address. And, why should he? He is “UNTOUCHABLE!”

By Dr. I.Q.

December 3, 2006 08:54 AM | Link to this

Let there be no argument here: VICK GETS WHAT HE WANTS! HE’S THE FRANCHISE! So, if there’s anything that Vick wants that he doesn’t have, IT’S BECAUSE HE HASN’T ASKED FOR IT! Then the question becomes: if there’s something that Vick needs that he hasn’t asked for, WHY? And, the answer is so painfully obvious. ACCOUNTABILITY! Vick doesn’t want ACCOUNTABILITY and the coaches and owners are not willing or able to hold his ACCOUNTABLE —- so, you have a LEADERLESS team floundering on the rocks of mediocrity. What a surprise! AUDIBILIZE? HELL NO, THEN HE WOULD BE RESPONSIBILE FOR THE DECISION!

The two games Vick played brilliant football, the ol had two replacements, the coaches crossed their fingers and prayed and man! the line held throughout both games giving Vick time to display his passing abilities with a couple of roll out runs of his own and oh yeah, Vick stayed in the pocket because he felt (safe). My point is, this happend not so much by design, but rather by chance, veteran linemen being replaced. I think the coaches have no clue on how to prepare for the next opponet nor how to make halftime adjustments, which adds to the reason for low scoring in the second half. Why is Knapper on the sidelines and not in a booth? Sorry, I guess it would’nt matter anyway, Both Mora and K-napp at times, seems to be hoping for luck, rather than planning strategy. Just an opinion.

This idea that Vick is untradeable because of his contract is untrue. If Vick is traded after june 1st 2007 the hit on the falcons salary cap would be manageable, especially if they resigned shaub at a decent price and made him the new QB. What is wrong with king Arthur and Rich McKay for hiring Jim Mora.Mora doesn’t wear a headset. The head coach should know what is being call on offence and defence.Mora don’t have a clue and this is one of the reasons why the falcons have scruggle in back to back seasons during the second half of the season.Greg knapp is worst offensive coordinator in the NFL.Knapp call plays that don’t give the falcons a chance to get first down and win.Knapp and Mora are in their own world.Knapp should have audibles for the offence and he should be in the booth up top to read what the opposing defence is doing.I believe with the right coaches the falcons can go far with Mike Vick.We need coaches that would get in a the players face and hate to lose.

So far, one offensive possession. One first down (Vick run), one drop pass (Crumpler), and one sack off of Gandy being abused.

Now, one offensive possession for the Redskins. One touchdown by totally beating the D-line.

Score Redskins 7, Atlanta 0.

This game looks like it’s not going to be pretty.

Stay tuned.

The offense (if that’s what we are still calling it) is about to take the field.

OK,

Second offensive drive (LOL)

Another dropped pass by Alge and a mistake by Vick… a batted ball. Another 3 and out.

Vick should have thrown a better ball so it should not have been batted. Michael Jenkins has made a catch.

We need Dr. Phil as a consultant for the receivers.

Why do we boo the Falcons? Because they are putrid, rancid, gawd-awful, and have been for 40-years. We boo because the team stinks, and stinks badly, and quite frankly, my dear, we no longer give a damn. The stench of losing permeates from every square inch of this franchise: from Michael Vick, Jim Mora’s desk, to the door knobs and janitors’ closets. I have been a life long Falcons fan. I even camped out in 27-degree weather to get tickets to the Falcons-Cowboys playoff game in 1980…only to watch that team of stinkin’ losers lose again in the final seconds. Why do I hate this team so much? Because the Falcons don’t just lose; they rip your heart out of your chest and show it to you still beating. Like the ‘98 Super Bowl season. Finally, the team looked like a winner, showing heart and stamina. They rode that heart all the way to the Super Bowl, making fans care again with all their hearts. And then, what’s-his-name has to go out cruising for a prostitute the night before the game, got arrested, destroyed the team’s mental game…and Atlanta loses…again. Took my heart right out of my chest, showed it to me still beating and laughed. I am sick of this stinkin’ franchise. Sick to death of it. Hey, Arthur! Do us a favor. Get this lousy bunch of losers the heck out of my city. I’d rather have no team than have to continue saying the Falcons play here.

Folks, today, we see a clash in styles. The skins are a tough, physical, hard nosed football team. The falcons on the other hand is a finesse team. Also, the skins have a great OC. The falcons on the other hand has a joke of an OC.

Let start with the Skins up front. The line has allowed one sack of Campbell. They are pushing the falcons around on both sides of the ball.

People now let us look at some of our play calling. On there and long, I am at home screaming roll Vick out with two blockers in front of him. What does Knapp do? Vick drop back with a fake draw pass. I was like what the _! Are we know for being a great draw play running team? I do not think so! He would have been better off running a Draw because no one would have expected it. Hey Knapp roll Vick out with two blocker in front. The Skins are blitzing and may be we can block them and get a big play.

Sure the defense sucks. But what’s their motivation to even try when they know that Vick is so terrible that even if they only gave up 3 or 7 points in the game, they’d still lose, and Vick would keep them on the field for about 90% of the game because he has no concept of ball control!

taylor is cutting off the field. the sloppy field conditions are killing mike’s speed. we a re in real trouble. my thing is if taylor is playing the spy and is up on the line f scrimmage - then who is deep covering for the skins. if taylor is up playing spy on mike, then someone should be open down the field. But if the play call is MV7 run, then the play call is MV7 run. It would be nice to have an audible or two for Mike to call, wouldn’t it?

** Hey Blank and Mckay, we demand that you guys have all the lineman put on 10-20 pounds of muscle before next season. We do not want any more undersized linemen. I have done the work: PJ Alexander 6-4 - 320 Frank Omiyale 6-4 - 315 Wayne Grandy 6-4- 315 Todd Wiener 6-4 - 315 Quinn Ojinnaka 6-5 - 315 Tyson Clabo 6-6 - 320 Kynan Forney 6-3 - 320 Brian Frenty 6-3 - 305 Ben Claxton 6-2 - 315 Toby Cecil 6-4 - 315 Trevor Hudson 6-5 - 325 Garrick Jones 6-5 - 320 Austin King 6-3 - 310 Matt Lehr 6-2 - 315 Todd McClue 6-1 - 300 Chris McGee 6-4 - 315

Now if we bring player with this kind of size in camp, we may be able to knock some people in the mouth.

I do not think Chris Crocker is a bad player. I think that dayum zone is the problem. I will agree that he is not getting it done at Free Safety. However, he is too good of a player to get rid of. Now, he could add 10 pounds and move to strong safety. He is a tremendous hitter. Can you see a strong safety with 4.4 speed or better? He could cover 99.9999% of the TEs in the NFL with that speed.

Washington went for it on 4th down???

They needed 10 points. I would have kicked a field goal. Then went for an onside kick.

Bottom line is this:

The Falcons won this game on team play. See, you win and lose as a TEAM! There were great catches and great runs. They ran Dunn a lot and they passed to Crumpler and he caught the ball. Michael Jenkins was a good change of pace.

Also, the O-line was adequate. They didn’t have a great game, but they had a few good plays. Those plays were enough to win the game.

The defense played well, even though I’m not into the scheme.

And Mora did a good job at commanding his coaching troops. I think Mora is OK, but Knapp still isn’t a good OC, and needs not to be here next year.

All in all, though, we needed that win to stay alive and we got it.

I fail to understand why if someone criticizes Vick he is labeled as a ‘hater’. Lord knows we criticized Jeff George and Chris Chandler enough. Sometimes a ‘cigar’ is just a ‘cigar’. Vick played well today. Now before we christen him as the greatest thing going, lets see some consistency. The only thing he has been consistent at, is being inconsistent.

You comments are like saying: is the glass half empty or half full….you are just a Vick basher, plain and simple, meaning, no matter what Vick does, you will never be happy and you will always be a whiner/complainer why dont you get a life and find someone else on the team to keep whinning about. Vick isn’t the only problem on this team and it would be a good thing if you dedicated as much time to examining the entire team instead of spending ALL of your time bashing Vick.

By mo

Richard,

I am not a ‘Vick basher.’ If you read my other posts, that would be evident.

My point is that Vick played exactly the way he always played. The difference is that he got help. In other words, if Vick would have gotten help, we probably would have won the other games, too.

Football is a team sport… no one player can make a team win or lose, most often than not.

pleeeeease let’s stop the vick talk for just two seconds and enjoy the win!

ya i know some of you meatballs will downplay this win by saying we beat a sorry washington team. this of course is the same washington team that beat carlina last week. a win in the nfl is a win. if losses to detroit and cleveland haven’t taught you anything, then i’m thinking you are ignorant beyond repair. it’s tough to win a game period in the NFL, it’s even tougher to win one on the road. the birds through all their adversity just came back from 14 points down in the first quarter. that showed me a lot of resiliency and character. i’m proud of the way this team “fought” (there’s that damn word again!) yesterday…

kudos to the falcons D, for coming up with several big plays at very opportune times.. kudos to ed donatell for bringing the pressure in the 2nd half.. kudos to mike vick for a well played, managed game. limit the turnovers, move the chains and take your shots downfield.. and lastly, KUDOS to jim mora, who has taken a lot of flack in this city. he kept this bumbling, under achieving squad together and hopefully has gotten this team back on track.

the future doen’t look bad in that remaining four games look winnable. the falcons are getting healthier by the week. especially on the defensive side of the football. if this defense can get healthy… and the receivers learn to hold on the ball.. the birds have a legitimate shot to make the playoffs…….

goooooooooooo falcons!

AS long as Allen Rossum is in the line up on defense the Falcons will Lose I am surprise Washington did not go right after him on every pass play I’m glade they did not. Dallas will take full advantage of his presence on the field. Why is he on the DEFENSE!!!!!!! PLEASE REMOVE HIM PERIOD. Tampa will line 84 on him all day and throw and throw on him watch.
