Apology won’t satisfy all fans

Falcons quarterback Michael Vick apologized repeatedly today for flipping the double-barreled Dirty Bird to Georgia Dome fans following Atlanta’s 31-13 loss to New Orleans.

Vick, who almost certainly will be fined by the NFL, seemed genuinely sincere in his apology and said it would never happen again. He said his actions were prompted by a fan was heckling his team — not just him — and he let his emotions get the best of him.

As contrite as Vick was, some fans won’t forgive him. Vick didn’t go Ryan Leaf on rival taunters in Carolina or Green Bay. He made his gesture to fans who buy tickets — tickets prices were raised last spring — to support a team that is reeling in a big way.

The good thing for Vick and the Falcons is that their next two games are on the road, at Washington and Tampa Bay.

Should Atlanta win and Vick play well, a lot of the acrimony and hard feelings will subside. However, losses and poor play by the quarterback will compound the issue and No. 7 won’t be feeling the same type of love he’s received in this town when he comes running out of that tunnel Dec. 16 against the Dallas Cowboys.

What an excellent opportunity to see what Schuab has in his holster. Bench Vick for a game, and see if Schaub can cause White and Jenkins to catch anything.

Fine, whatever. I’m sure he’s feeling pressure. He should still be held out from starting. Receivers should go.

Why haven’t we heard about coaching staff firings yet? It’s 3:30 in the afternoon.

OK we’ve heard Vick’s apology.

When will Deangelo Hall apologize for giving up the touchdown at the half or for getting burned for 75 yards on the 3rd play of the game and then tacking an extra 15 on with a personal foul?

When will Roddy White apologize for dropping passes all season?

When will Greg Knapp apologize for running the same tired plays over and over?

When will Jim Mora apologize for putting out an undisciplined team week in and week out? Why is Deangelo Hall allowed to constantly cost his team yardage in penalties? Why do we even have a head coach? The players are not fearful of him.

When does Rich McKay apologize for drafting wide receivers who can’t catch the ball?

When do the the Atlanta Falcons fans apologize for being the worst fair weather fans in football?

When does Arthur Blank apologize and lower prices?

When do we start rooting for losses so that we can get a draft pick and some new coaches?

I think the time for all of these questions is NOW!

I agree with Greg. Suspend Vick for a game for flipping the fans off, and watch Schaub play behind this excuse we call an offensive line. Since Roddy White is a back up receiver, maybe he can catch a pass from the back up QB.

i’ve been a huge mike vick supporter since the falcons made him the first overall pick.. and while i realize this current slide is not entirely his fault(horrific receivers, a d that goes home by the 3rd quarter, an inept offensive line, a moron for an offensive coordinator)… it’s time for a change.

there’s just no excuse for vick’s actions yesterday after the game. however frustrated he might have been.. it doesn’t give him the right to flick off HIS fans.

sit vick for one week.

Screw Vick. Suspend him for the year. Suspend him next year. After that, release him. He sucks. He is an unperforming rapster-gangster, not a football player. The only thing Vick can lead is a gang. The sooner the Falcons can get rid of him, the quicker they can legitimately make a claim towards being a solid team.

The end of the Mora, Knapp and Vick era is coming soon. All three I doubt… but together this combo has had it’s run.

And what’s up the kiss to the helmet Mora gave Vick. Is he not coddled enough?

I could say a lot more but no one here really cares… Everyone has probably already made up their own minds about this team and orgainization.

The idea that Michael Vick flicked off “his fans” or fans who paid to support the team is a joke. Vick was flicking off all the bandwagon Atlanta fans who love to put all the blame on his shoulders and wanted to put this loss on him even though he was the only glimmer of hope the Falcons had in this game. I don’t buy people who say they have supported Vick all along but now think he is a “thug” and that his actions were “inexcusable.” I don’t agree that its unreasonable to keep defending Vick now or that doing so makes one a “Vick apologist,” the man’s coaching staff, receiving corps, and o-line are derailing what should be a great career. You can add “Atlanta” “fans” to that list.

You know all you have to do is look at who the coaches named as captains to see they don’t get it Vick (well you kind of have to have the QB leader or not) D Hall please cornerbacks have to be selfish almost by definition but he takes the cake stupid penalty after getting burned trying to pad his stats instead of knocking down the hail mary and I dont know if it is visable on tv but as the outside rusher on the def PA tries he was walking to the sideline as the ball was kicked 3 times! Oh yeah Rossom was the other captain. With leaders like that, you get efforts like we saw, selfish and finger pointing

I also wonder how anyone can think that its “playing the race card” or some unreasonably far leftist position to characterize a significant portion of the criticism of Vick as racist. Note how many people now call him “thug” or “rapster-gangster.” I’m white and its just obvious - this city should be embarassed. I don’t dispute that Vick’s play has been erratic, but I agree with the man - put him in a different situation and the sky’s the limit. Instead we have our present rock bottom. But let the hypocrites come out and act like they’ve never flipped the bird to someone who was being an a-hole. Let them call the quarterback of our (are you really from Atlanta?) a dumb thug gangsta rappa who should play wide receiver or running back. All you end up with is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Keep in mind, Blank is running a business. He would rather go 8-8 and be more profitable than go 11-5 and be less profitable. It’s tough to win a championship when profitability is part of the equation. If you want to walk into a box and support that on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, that’s fine. But don’t be surprised when you’re flipped off.

John from Dunwoody,

Which gang is Vick leading? Which rap album are you referring to? What makes Vick a gangster? Is it flipping the bird? Well if so, then I know that I’m a gangster, and so is my little sister. Is it getting arrested? I know that Vick has never been arrested but Matt Schaub has. Please explain. Perhaps you have some inside information? Surely that’s not an ignorant stereotypical comment? We’re really confused. Thanks.

Remember when Vick gave up that touchdown to New Orleans at the dn of the half?

Remember when Vick gave up 185 return yards to Baltimore and cost us the game?

Remember when Vick got burned by a back up receiver for a 75 yard touchdown on the 3rd play of the New Orleans game?

Remember when Vick got on his cell phone to get clarification on something that should have been addressed at the beginning of the week?

Remember when Roddy White dropped that pass because Vick could only hit him in the chest with it?

Remember when Vick repeatedly wasnt’ able to provide pass protection to himself for more than 2-3 seconds in the pocket?

Remember when Vick constantly was involved in all fights and skirmishes and led his team in negative penalty yardage?

Remember when Hines Ward ran right by Vick with one shoe on to score a touchdown?

Let’s face it people. When you have 11 Pro Bowlers on your team, yet the ENTIRE team plays bad, you don’t blame your QB. You blame the coaches. How does San Francisco have the same record as us? They knew who to let go. Guess who picked up all of those mediocre coaches and players?

Jim Mora runs an undisciplined team, which allows Deangelo Hall to constantly run his mouth and cost his team. It allows Mike Vick to flip off his fans(even though ATL fans deserve it). It allows your offensive Coordinator to neutralize the most dynamic player in the league. What kind of head coach says “I’m not going to tell Mike to protect the football”? What kind of coach allows D Hall to give up penalty yardage and the selfish play he tried at the end of the half? Why was he going for an INT? was he going to return it 100 yards? NO. He was trying to pad his stats instead of win the game.

If I run this team, then Vick and Hall are benched this week. Knapp is fired today and the entire organization is on notice that they may not make it to Christmas. This season is lost. Let’s see who wants to be here next year.

It’s not all Vick’s fault, that’s correct. He should still be benched for a game, or as I suggested above, at least held out for a quarter…something, anything.

But to totally dismiss Vick’s dismal numbers is missing the point. Yeah, his receivers suck…SUCK, and should all be cut. But he (Vick) also needs to be reevaluated as well.

If nothing else some symbolic messages need to be sent immediately.

And btw, being critical of the team you support with cash isn’t being a bandwagon lunkhead by any stretch of the imagination. The organization owes EVERYTHING to its fans because the organization wouldn’t exist were it not for them.

Was it just me or did it look like Vick was actually gesturing toward specfic person/s. He did not give a Jack McDowell rousing finger wave, nor a blind Randy Moss moonshine to whomever was in the crowd. I believe, as many have posted, that was an address to whomever was heckling the team. When before has he shown this type of attitude? Vick has been a leader for his team. In the same interview that people cite where he said “we need to find ways to catch the ball” he also added “maybe i need to make more plays myself….throw the ball better”. This sounds much better than Peyton “laser, rocket arm” Mannings assesment of his O-line’s play after they lost to Pittsburgh or Matt Leinart’s post game after losing to VY in the Rose. He doesn’t throw people under the bus, unlike even the head coach’s father did in an attempt to insulate Mora Jr.’s let downs this season. From a marketing standpoint obviously Blank is/will not be happy about the situation, but VICK IS THE FRANCHISE. We all know that all will be forgiven once the ‘cones start winning again- particularly given ATL’s fairweather nature.

On another note, fans need to stop being so D@mn sensative anyway. We expect to be able to berate players we supposedly cheer for when they are giving their all, but coming up a little short and not expect any reprisal? It would be foolish and short sighted to blame this one on #7. Get off your high horses. David Justice was right- and the fans forgave him as they all lined up Peachtree to take his picture at the WS parade.

Vick flipping off fans is not cool. What it may take is a change of scenery. Maybe the birds should trade him. But I will say this, the team that gets him will love him. And when he has success with that other team, all of the dumb a*******e$ that wanted him gone will speak as if they were the very ones upset when we traded him. And believe me folks, for all of you that are calling on Schaub, wait until the offseason, when DCs begin to game plan for him. These guys get paid to look at a QBs every tendency. I’m not saying he is going to fail but the history of backup QBs show that there was a reason they were backups.

In reference to the coaching, I actually like Mora but his inexperience has shown through for the past two years. In other words, when adversity has hit his team, he didn’t know what to do. My predictions are as follow: Knapp and Donatell will be jettison. What bothers me about Knapp is that he should’ve been in the booth and not on the field. This caught up with him in San Francisco and its catching up with him in the ATL. How in the heck can you see what the D is doing, when you are at eye level? How can you make adjustments to your game plan when you can’t see the entire field? This is why he keeps calling the same tired plays. This is why when the team got into the RZ they couldn’t score touchdowns because he is 30+ yds away from the field and at an angle.

dirtybird.. vick gets the blame because he gets paid 100+mil dollars and is the face of this franchise… maybe he has smallish, weak inept offensive lineman because this team CAN’T AFFORD ANY DECENT ONE’S.. so considering the lack of funds …the birds can’t sign a high profile receiver the falcons have to use their first round pick on receivers for two straight years! i’m not putting all the blame on mike vick.. but the fact of the matter is this current team is built around him… and this current team .. for a lack of a better word blows!

check eli in ny… he gets all the blame too.. don’t know if that’s fair or not… but in the nfl.. THE QUARTERBACK gets the praise if the TEAM does well and he get all the criticism if the team under performs.. so please get over the fact that vick is getting thrown under the bus.. it’s the nature of this business… besides the guy needs more accountability..

his comments on hbo lacked class and is completely inexcusable for a team leader to say those kind of things…

for me the issue of mike vick has never been black or white.. shoot i could care less if he was green…. but after admantly standing up for him for the better part of six years… i’m sick of his immaturity (flicking off fans after a game, calling out his offensive coordinator, receivers to the national media) his sensitivity (his tirade after the miami game, something about “dont’ criticize me no more”), his lack of accountability (two weeks ago when he said “i’m not perfect” = nobody is mike, but bad choice of words, him always blaming the system for his shoddy passing numbers) …. the bottom line is mike vick has regressed as a player and as a leader. he is ill fit to lead this franchise and i believe he must be replaced.

While you all or still letting Vick think he is a great quarterback, think about what the position as a quarterback requires you to do. Lead the team, pass and be able to get out of the pocket. Vick is overrated and overpaid. Just because he can scramble doesn’t make him a great quarterback. He’s a show man, great for video highlights. When he start to utilize his players more, he might begin to look like a quarterback. Until then, you fools can continue to think he’s the greatest but he’s as far away from being a great quarterback as anyone can get. Now he would make a great wide receiver since he likes to run. When Mora stop kissing up to him to keep his job maybe he will coach and make him be a team player. There’s no “I” in team. Use Dunn, Norwood, Crumpler, etc. to make it happen. So what if the rookies drop the ball. You have some of the greatest receivers that drop the ball many times. Get real and look at him for what he is. A self-centered jackass.

I have been a flcons fan since I moved to Atl in 1974. I even rented an apt to Gen Lee the Qback then. I suffered as all of you through the Smith years. I thought it was the smiths that were the problem. As you can see there is an attitude in atl about football that causes us to lose our perspective. Every team has succeeded some way but not the falcons. I wqs concerned when they drafted Vick because of his size. After the first season I was abeleiver because I thought the coaching staff could teach him just as the Panthers taught Jake and Parcells has done with Roma. He definitely screwed up shootin the double barreled birds but he is about the same size as Steve Young was and he was fantastic. Let’s clean house, get some smart coaches, good, not great receivers and pay steve young to be the QB coach $1,000,000 a year and I think you will see a super bowl within 3-4 years. I can wait after all I went to lowest attended game ever when the facons played their last game of the season in 1975 I think. 40,000 no shows. I live in NC now but will alays be a falcon fan. Don’t give up or get mad just wait for a correct decision by Arthur Blank….he really seems to care more than the smiths did. Oh well we will soon find out. Go Falcons!!!

I’d like to see Blank admit he made a mistake by getting rid of Reeves and bring him back. Vick looked more comfortable in his first season as a starter under Reeves than he ever has under Mora/Knapp. The only reason Mora went to the NFC championship is because teams were still adjusting to Vick’s unique abilities as a quarterback. Now teams know how to defend Vick and the current coaching staff has had almost 2 full seasons to counter what teams are doing to them and have not come up with a successful formula yet. Bring back Reeves and I think Vick would be fine. If you get rid of Mora, but replace him with someone besides Reeves I think you might as well get rid of Vick too and start fresh with a new QB.

I was getting my hair cut today at local barbershop and everyone there was talking about Vick’s flip - and not happy about it. I’m a Vick fan but I agree with others who think Mora should bench him the next game since Mora’s in danger of losing this team (or has already lost it?) and needs to instill some discipline. Plus the shake-up might be what the Falcons need (a la Romo with Cowboys). But Mora has no balls so it won’t happen. I did hear some people are talking about wearing Vick jerseys with black X’s taped over the 7 at the Cowboys game. If the Cowboys blow out the Falcons things could get ugly…

dirrtybird says it best in his/her posts so there’s no need to rehash the obvious. It has been a total team effort in losing these games.

Last week, after Mora Sr. made those comments about Vick, I thought that if Mora Jr. had any balls, he would have come out and defended his QB immediately and used it to motivate the team. Sadly, I saw or read none of that. They say in baseball that when a team is doing poorly, since you can’t fire the players, you fire the manager. I like the idea of Knapp being canned today…and the rest being given the heave-ho if they don’t turn this ship around pretty darned fast.

The Falcons best bet is put in Schaub as our #1 Quarterback and make our vastly overrated and overpaid current quarterback (VICK)a runningback (this is where his true talent lies…assuming someone can actually teach him to hold on to the ball!!!)

This just shows how different the philosophies of running a football team can be. Some throw money at the problem and try to pay their way to success. Others face the problem with a full on plan of financial responsibility and player accountability. We were criticized for not paying players what they want and letting them move on to greener pastures. But look at the different out comes. Football is more then just physical talent. It’s mindfulness, awareness, and being accountable for every action you take, top to bottom, from the owners, and the coaches, to the players, right down to the last person on the totem pole. No one person is better or worse then the other. Thankfully we are blessed with a group of owners, coaches, players, and fans that get it. I hope things work out for Atlanta. It seems like such a waste when things like this happen. Good luck down there.

After I finally had Shica’s comments translated, I think he said Mike Vick was the best QB in the league. Shica, have you ever even seen a football game? Move Vick to where he belongs-wide receiver or running back, put Schaub in at QB. It’s not a demotion. Do you think Steve Smith is less of a star because he’s not QB? No, he’s Carolina’s best playmaker and Vick can still be, too. Schaub has too much upside to waste away on the bench. The coaches have to figure out a way to get them both in the lineup.

These are the most hypocritical people on the planet. Vick should still be flipping birds to these nuts. Half these people have never attended one game and are only bashing Vick because the mere thought of this young man making more than they can actually comprehend drives them crazy. For goodness sakes, let it go! Stop being so jealous!

Sitting a QB for flipping off a fan!!!! Would you expect the Braves to make Smoltz skip a start because he flipped off a heckler? Would you expect the Hawks to bench Joe Johnson for flipping off a heckler? Heck no!!!! If Vick flipped off a heckler after winning a playoff game, how many of you would say sit him? Get real, the reason most want to sit the guy is because people want to see Schaub play. Let’s call a spade a spade. These are grown a$$ men playing a violent sport. If Vick flipped off the guy and then walked toward him, then yes, you sit his a$$. But to flip someone off?!?!?! Hell I flip off people in my car. Should I be suspended a day from driving?

vick has never and never will be a QB. the man cant throw. yes there have been dropped passes. but, anytime a QB runs for more yardage than he throws is not a good thing. it seems selfish that he would rather run with the ball. give schaub a chance. what is there to lose?

You people on this blog classify Vick as a thug because of the way he acts, dresses and talks. That is not a definition of a thug. Have any of you ever seen the way Brett Farve dresses at a press conference? with skoal in his mouth and a Budweiser cap on. Have you ever heard him speak? doesn’t sound very intellegent either. Why do we call Vick a thug because he likes rap music thats his choice he is still young, thats what young people listen to these days.So get off of Vick because he is young Black & rich !

One other thing for all of you Vick bashers.

If our receivers just do their freakin’ job and catch those 5 drops, all of a sudden he’s 14-24 for a respectable 180-200 yards and the team has a good chance to win the game. Tack on his 150 rushing yards and that’s a pretty good afternoon.

On the other hand, if our defense does their freakin’ job and don’t give up the hail mary and the Saints receivers don’t make those 5 fantastic catches on so-so throws, Bree’s is a very average 15-30 for probably around 250 yards.

And another vent, would it be too much to ask our defense to get a turnover or a stop when it really mattered?

Why so many of you want to blame it all on Vick is beyond me.

Who the heck cares about some fingers. The real problem are the hands (or lack thereof) of the wide recievers. Lay-off vick, he put the team on his back and he was gettin level for staying in the pocket. All far dropped balls. Hell yea I would be frustrated. If I was him you would be lucky to get the finger. If you don’t like vick than choose another team…cuz he aint goin no where. The team lost this one. Not just vick. I love the falcons. And I live 900 miles north. So all you cry babies SHUT UP. My team is in trouble. I don’t like the play calling on both sides. Like everything this also has a solution…and it aint the QB. Scrap the cut blockin scheme. Build the great wall of china in front of vick. Bring back the pro-style offense back. All the defense needs is health and depth. With that formula the falcons will be unstopable….period

John from Dunwoody,

You still havent’ described what makes someone a gangster/thug/rapster? I’m totally afraid to go to games now. I can’t tell the good guys from the gangsters. Please tell me how a gangster dresses so that I can avoid these dangerous people.

Are you referring to his use of athletic wear? Surely a professional athlete should be allowed to wear athletic wear on and off the field right? I mean there are all kinds of “non-athletes” already wearing it.

Please, for my childrens safety, let us all know what makes Mike Vick a Gangster/Thug/Rapster so that I can look out for these people on the street! I’m already scared of anyone who flips the bird at this point, including myself.

Silly me, i’ve been scared of people driving around with rifles in their trucks, when this whole time I should be scared of Mike Vick.

Please clear this up, and thanks so much for your community service John from Dunwoody.

Isn’t it funny how gets blamed for EVERYTHING that goes wrong with this team? I DO appreciate the true fans that understand that this in fact a TEAM sport. For ALL YOU BANDWAGONERS who think that a Vick should be benched for a game and let #8 start PLEASE!! His(#8) win total for the games he has started is still ZERO.(Some of those starts I even think we led in the game at some point)For all you bandwagoners, that thinks #7 needs to sit, be traded etc….STEP AWAY FROM THE METH. It’s obvious that you probably NEVER played an organized sport in your life(Flag Football at your college doesn’t count). FOR THOSE OF YOU SO BENT OUT OF SHAPE about the “DUAL DIRTY BIRDS” he displayed to your sometimey behind after the game( I can only say he probably should have used a “little” more self control.)marinate on this, Let’s not forget that #7 had to field all those “coach killer” calls because of Bonehead Jr’s Dad. Bonehead Sr. should have known better!!!(By the Bonehead Sr didn’t accomplish ANYTHING while he was in the league(must be sour grapes).MOST OF YOU CAN’T handle being criticized on the piece of job that you have, Yet Mike has to deal with hundreds of media folk day in and day out & STILL prepare for the upcoming opponent but you want to pass judgement on #7 because he flipped off some BANDWAGON JUMPERS because his some of his KEY personnel can’t step and make a play but opposing receivers can make “circus catches” on our defense.PLEASE!!!STEP AWAY FROM THE METH. TRUE FANS APPRECIATE THE EFFORT HE GAVE AND REALIZE THE REAL PROBLEM. I would like to see Peyton Manning behind our GARBAGE O-LINE and have to play with that middle school receiving core and several different offensive coordinators. Bottom line Bonehead Jr. was mediocre in S.F. and that’s all he will ever be.FIRE MORA LET HIM RETIRE TO THE BROADCAST BOOTH WITH HIS DAD!

I absolutely love watching Vick when he is “on”, like his 2nd year - unstoppable in 4th qtr. But observing from a distance, he does not seem to handle adversity well (cold, playing from behind, etc.) which is very important for a QB leader. Further, is there tension developing between Vick and Crumpler, judging from the comments?

If someone else has to play, I want to skip Schaub and go straight to DJ, a true leader with speed, arm, and high QB football IQ.

Will Blog for Food, that’s funny - besides I’m a ‘Big Ten guy’ and we Big Ten boys dominate between the lines.

Two last points - - the birds are not going to sit Vick with the playoffs on the line. Also, the only way Schaub plays is if Vick gets hurt. McKay is not stupid. Why let Schaub play behind an awful line, look awful and/or get hurt. Talk about his trade value declining. Remember Doug Johnson, I bet the Falcons wish they had traded him a year earlier.

By KENNY

November 27, 2006 05:29 PM | Link to this

Vick is not perfect. He is far from it. BUT VICK IS NOT A THUG.

If you listen to him talk, you would realize that he actually is a nerd who happens to come from the ghetto. MV7 is one of those nerds who played ball during the day his whole life and then sat in house playing madden on nintendo, sega, and playstation all night.

that is hard for many of you to understand. you see a black man having a certain look and talking a certain way and you make simplistic assumptions about him.

How would you all feel if everyone came on here and said that Earnhardt, Jr. never wins because well look at the way he dresses and talks, he looks and sounds like a stupid redneck, so that is why he never wins because he is just a stupid redneck? The fact that he looks and talks like he is a southern boy from NC does not define anything about who he is or how productive he is. Just the same way that the fact that mike vick is a southern boy from a horrible section of the worst part of Virginia does not define who he is or how productive he is.

Vick has never been in trouble, never suspended for drugs, never gets into fights, has never been arrested, never goes TO on his coaches and team, and really does not do anything Thuglike.

He looks thuggish because of how he was raised and where he comes from.

Does he need to change his look a little bit? Of course.

It is fine to have a certain look whether it be the hippie, redneck, drifter, freak, goth, thug, pretty boy, fly guy, guido, slick, frat boy, stoner, or thug look when you are in your late teens or early twenties.

But once you are between the ages of 21-25 and you take on responsibilites, as my dad always tells me you got to put on a damn suit and look like a man. pull up your darn pants, take off the baggy points, take off the bling, take off the hippie jewelry, shave the goatee, get rid of the perpetual 5 o’clock shadow, get yourself a conservative haircut, etc. my pops drives me nuts with that crap. but he of course is right. At some point, Vick and the rest of us need to grow up that way. Professional athletes are given more leeway to express their individuality than the rest of us but at some point they need to grow up.

However, to call Vick a thug even though he does not do anything thuggish is just plain ignorant and I hate to go here because I can’t stand that this blog always turns into perpetual race baiting session but it is racist to call Vick a thug.

Flipping fans off is immature and inexcusable. But I can understand where he is coming from. Just read these blogs. There were almost 600 responses to the Bird Babe yesterday. Weren’t most of us using these blogs, as we do every week, to give every single person in the falcons orgainization the proverbial finger, as most of us do en masse following every freaking frustrating game? Hasn’t every UGA fan been blawging the season away giving the program the proverbial bird? Didn’t the whole state blog like nuts this weekend and have the whole state give reggie ball a collective big middle finger?

Black Jack McDowell flipped off the Yankees fans back in 1995 and no one called him a thug. The yankees fans had been riding him hard the whole season because he was underperforming and he finally snapped and gave everyone the finger. Of course, the fans got onto him a game or two after the flipping the bird incident but after that everyone was cool with him because he finally showed that he cared as much as the fans did.

Schaub is the one who was arrested during a bye week during his rookie year. Does that make Schaub a thug? No. It just means that he was a stupid young man who probably went to one too many bars, had too many beers, and was out at too late an hour just like many of us were a time or two when we were twenty two.

SO ATL fans grow up.

AND ATL fans, if you are going to criticize the man, the team, the coaches, the management, don’t you at least owe it to the team TO GET OFF YOUR BUTTS, STOP SITTING ON YOUR HANDS, IN THE 4TH QUARTER WHEN THE OTHER TEAM IS IN A THIRD DOWN SITUATION DEEP ON YOUR SIDE OF THE FIELD.. HERE IS A LITTLE ADVICE FAIRWEATHER PATHETIC FANS: GOOD NFL FANS CHANT DEFENSE!! DEFENSE!! DEFENSE!! ON THIRD DOWNS DEEP IN YOUR TEAM’S SIDE OF THE FIELD DURING 4TH QUARTERS OF GAMES.

Not only did management, the coaches, and the players perform like a joke yesterday but so did the fans of the falcons who attended that game. Pathetic.

AGAIN, IDIOTS: DEFENSE! DEFENSE! DEFENSE! that is what you are supposed to chant late in games when the other team is bogged down in a third down situation deep on your side of the field.

But then again, instead of rooting on your team, you would rather focus your venom on booing and killing your struggling team instead of giving them perhaps a much needed boost over the top.

The Falcons were reaching in those two drafts when we took the WR’s. At the pace they are on, we could have drafted Calvin Johnson, Dwayne Jarret, or Robert Meachem w/ the 1st round pick this year. 5 or 6 win teams get picks in the top 5. But since we were reaching and missing back then, we could not dare draft one of them this season. So we screwed ourselves twice. We took those guys and gotta pass up on these guys. GREAT!

My thing is, WR’s must be elite in college, b4 they are considered 1st round picks. Neither of those guys were elite college WR’s.

Vick is good QB and we win easily yesterday if it wasn’t for those drive killers in Jenkins and White. D Fence look pathetic in the first half but showed heart in the 2nd. shica: a word of advice. go back to school.

d1truth: schaub is a free agent at the end of this year.

new jersey falcon and all you other meatballs. all of you guys became falcons fans because of mike vick. to be completely honest he is the most exciting player to ever play for the falcons and he actually took us to the playoffs for two different years. but you see the REAL falcons fans all love mike vick too. but at some point we don’t care who is quarterback we just want to see this team win. i’m fairly young so i haven’t been through that many qb’s but i’ve been through my fair share (chris miller, bobby herbert, billy joe tolliver, jeff george, chris chandler, doug johnson, tony graziani).. and from what i’ve seen from vick lately.. both on and off the field .. he isn’t above reproach. (shica, yes it’s ok for you to look that word up)

bottom line is i want to see this falcons team win.. vick is a sorry excuse for a leader. he doesn’t say the right things. he doesn’t act the right way.. and although those things seem trivial.. those characteristics have a profound effect on the team in the long run!

Hey FalconFanHere

Fool!! Vick Sucks - thats why!

IF,if,if,if,if,if,if,if,!!!! If you had a clue , you would see that Vick sucks. How can you support a guy who sits 26th in the NFL as a QB? 26th! As of today. behind him are 2 rookies, Harrington and Plummer( who is getting benched this week). Thats why we all feel its time to move on. Vick has been QB for 6 years!! And every year he ranks in the 20’s in the NFL - usually bottom 3rd. Enuf already.

His QB rating was 47 for Sundays game. He had 37% completion - and only 2 or 3 of those drops where blatant - all of the other passes were not really catchable. Just an excuse.

Vick is nothing more than fast. With the holes in the line opened up- anyone could gain yards - He is fast, its his only asset.

The Falcons will never win the SB with this clown. Realise it - and move on. Make him 3rd wide out.

It’s scary how bad things have gotten for this team so fast. We’re all waiting to see if Arthur Blank is a man of his word & will do something. But we are stuck with Mr. Vick b/c of that ridiculous contract. I’ve just had it, I’d rather have a consistent quarterback who’s not so spectacular but is steady & an actual leader of this team. But that will never happen as long as Vick is here. The dirty bird was just the final straw. He showed he has no class whatsoever. The rest of that team gets blame for the losses, too but we can’t fire the whole team. This town is so fed up, it’s almost to the point where not a single person will care about them. It’s a shame for all of the classy players who are still here, Warrick, Alge, Brooking, Kerney, Finn, etc…D. Hall has no class, either. All talk, no action. He gets burned by someone every week! This team has no discipline & no backbone. Help us Arthur!!!!!

I’ve seen all of those interviews and to be honest, all of those QB’s that you mentioned gave entirely different interviews. I’m totally lost now. I did notice that Tom Brady was wearing a Patriots hat instead of a Falcons hat.

Now that you’ve tried to describe what a thug QB isn’t, can you answer the original question and describe what a Thug QB is?

but just to be sure, my children are safe around Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Ben Roethlesberger(unless there is a motorcycle involved), but they are not safe around the dangerous Mike Vick right?

OK everybody let go of the finger from Michael… not to condone what he did, but I expected some emotions from a quarterback who WANTS TO WIN, while the rest of the team is filing their nails! Michael can throw on target all day - he’s done well considering. But wouldn’t you be more than furious if your passes were not caught by “professional” receivers. Hello - where did yesterday’s first downs come from?

The real problem is the package, starting with wonderful Jim Mora and his “brilliant” coaching staff calling those “brilliant” plays, no offensive line, a worthless defensive secondary, and not to mention receivers who can’t catch a cold. In this situation the people responsible get what? - FIRED, starting with Jim.

For you pseudofans who stereotype and think that every black man with braids and earrings is a gangster, get over it, he is not a gangster and has not conducted himself as such. Just so you know real gangsters don’t apologize for their actions. Oh I forgot we are in the Great State of Georgia … where race still matters.

Michael Vick is the Falcon’s starting Quarterback, and can’t do this alone. He also needs to have the option to do some play calling like Manning, when he sees what we don’t see out there on the field. Michael IS THE REASON THAT THE GEORGIA DOME SELLS OUT. If you are a true fan support him and the franchise, win or lose, or stay at home!

When people buy tickets, they have the right to express their displeasure for poor performance, regardless of the sport. They do not have the right to use profanity or throw things, like the people who threw peanuts at Dave Justice 10 years ago. When Vick makes a guesture like that, he is expressing his feelings for all of the fans who see him—not just those who booed or jeered. Atlanta would be much better off without Vick or Mora who allows, if not encourages such behavior.

John from Dunwoody,

I did notice that Mike Vick talks a little like Warrick Dunn in his interviews. Are we to assume that Warrick Dunn is a thug/gangster/rapster too? He does wear his hat with the slightest so tilt. Is this what I should be looking for?

Please John from Dunwoody, don’t leave us hanging with this important safety announcement for the city of Atlanta and all NFL fans.

Dirrtybird…i see what yr’ gettin’ at with John from Dunwoody, but it ain’t gonna’ work. He won’t admit that his comments are motivated by racism. It’s really sickening.

Best thing to do w/ him and all the people saying he’s a thug is to ignore their comments. MV7 is not a thug. He seems like a pretty nice guy who made a human mistake.

But things need to be shaken up some, and if that means benching Vick for a game or whatever, then so be it.

But we all know the coaches suck and that’s where these problems start.

Steve,

I heard you on ColdPizza this morning and I was very much disapointed in what you had to say, or more importantly, what you DIDN’T have to say.

Steve, you could have opened a can of worms and exposed Greg Knapp not giving Vick the ability to audible at the line of scrimage. I saw play, after play, after play on Sunday that any other QB in the league would have audibled out of at the line, but Vick coundn’t.

Like maybe those three straight pass calls from the Saints 5 yard line. Or maybe when Knapp had Vick take 5 step drop after 5 step drop in the face of 6 blitzers.

Steve, you had a chance to really get this issue out there. To help guys in the national media like that moron Skip Bayless realize that this is not Vick’s fault. That Greg Knapp is the one to blame for Vick not being able to develope.

You had a chance, and you didn’t take it.

As for Vick flipping off the fan. I expect more from him, and I know the Rich Man does as well.

More importantly, Vick expects more from himself.

It’s only the ignorant, racist, socially retarded ‘necks on this board who label Vick a “thug” because of his skin color and the way he dresses.

He’s actually quite soft-spoken in person and with the media. He’s a good kid, but those KKKers would never know that. Their too busy breeding hate and ignorance.

But the fact is, he was wrong.

Another fact is, he can’t win on his own. His O-Line is the worst in the league. Thanks Mora and McKay! His recievers suck! Thanks Mora and McKay! They should have learned from Matt Millen’s mistake: never, under any circumstances, draft a reciever in the first round. It hardly ever works out.

Anyway, I cannot believe that Greg Knapp hasn’t been fired yet. What will it take for that moron to be fired?

And for you pointy-headed morons who want Schaub, you do realize that Vick was sacked 3 times behind that line and hit over 14 times, right?

Do you think Matt Fraud would have survived the game? You people are retarded, and have no clue about the game of football. You just want your “Great White Hype.”

Idiots.

Wow…there is just so much hate here…why is it that Vick is blamed for poor coaching by an offensive coordinator who thinks he’s in the pop warner leagues…Vick is blamed for an offensive line that doesn’t give him the damn time to throw the ball…he has to run for his life every week…they’re pathetic…Vick is blamed for receivers who can’t catch balls that come straight to them and Vick is blamed when the running game stalls because good ole Knapp runs the same plays, week in and week out…Vick is human and he has his faults but in no way is it fair to blame him solely for this terrible season…what makes you people think schaub would perform any better w/ the non-supporting cast around him…your hate for Vick is blinding you to the reality…get over it…Vick is not a cookie-cutter quarterback and until the front office gets it in their heads that they need to stop bringing in cookie-cutter coaches, it will be the same year in and year out…you put $130 million into him, why not bring in coaches, staff and players to accentuate what he brings to the game??? Baffling…

John from Dunwoody,

OH! Did you mean that Vick is black and that’s what makes him a thug/gangster/rapster? I thought they talked differently because they are from different places with different circumstances. Why didnt’ you just come out and say that to begin with?

So just to be clear. I should keep my children away from just black athletes or black people in general? Rich black people? It’s so confusing. Thank you for spreading your intelligence and safety upon us John from Dunwoody. Hopefully you dont’ have to deal with too many black people actually talking over there in Dunwoody.

My children actually have a few black friends, because my ignorant beliefs led me to believe that people were to be judged by character and not by skin color. Apparently I was totally wrong, and I shall ban my kids from having black friends. I don’t want my kids to be exposed to anything a little different than what goes on in their house.I want to keep the blinders on them, so that they have a narrow view when they grow up too.

Most of all I want my children to be safe, and you John from Dunwoody have done the great city of Atlanta a great service today.

Of course, I could be totally wrong again. Is it left handed people that are gangsters/thugs/rapsters? Can you come teach my children personally John from Dunwoody?

I love Mike Vick, but what he did after the game was totally out of line. He apologized. He’s gonna get fined. That’s enough for me. I can understand, some of you will be turned off by this episode because it was a vulgar display. But some are turned off because they are alot like those so-called fans that screamed expletives at their team as they left the field. Steve, you should learn a thing or two from Sekou Smith about sportswriting. The Falcons’ team is imploding, things are not going right on either side of the ball. Where’s the scoop on the offensive play-calling? Where’s the scoop on what the Falcons plan on doing to fix the dropped passes? Where’s the scoop on what they are going to do to fix the protection schemes? What are they going to do about the subpar coverage skills the safeties have shown so far? Writing about Vick’s bird-flipping is a cop-out — you know very well that this is an easy way to stir up emotions and responses without actually writing about anything substantial. Obviously the apology won’t satisfy all fans — you could have just seen the responses on the blog yesterday and figured that out. Do your job properly Steve.

LOL KENNY: i guess your classification of nerd is quite different from mine. i didn’t know playing video games all night made you a nerd. i thought it had something to do with smarts.. oh well.

bird dawg: have you ever thought about something before commenting about it?

mike vick supposedly is very limited in terms of being able to audible. hmm .. i really wonder if their is a deeper issue here. maybe mike vick isn’t capable of learning the whole playbook. maybe he’s confined to running certain plays and remembering them. maybe the coaches feel this is the best way to maximize his talents. last time i heard coach reeves talk. they had to “dumb” down the verbage so mike could grasp the offense better. all i’m saying is maybe just MAYBE mike vick isn’t capable of calling out audibles.. anybody ever think of that possibility? i mean seriously. even if that was true. why in the freaking world did he tell everyone that’s the case. that in and of itself tells me all i need to know about him. he’s not very bright.

By dirrtybird

November 27, 2006 07:25 PM | Link to this

honest_abe,

Matt Schaub is not allowed to audible either. Neither were the 49ers QB’s hence the “T.O. incident”. T.O. realized that the offense was handicapped by not allowing a QB to change out of a play when the entire defense and every fan at home is yelling out what you’re about to run. So there goes your theory. Dumbing down the verbage and hand cuffing your QB are two different things. Who is actually going to come on this blog and say that Greg Knapp knows what he is doing? This guy is a career middle of the pack coordinator with no adjustments. His days are done in Atlanta. If Mora remains attached at the hip with him, then so are his.

Inter89, the only reason the Falcons are not dead is because they are in the horrible NFC, where they are only a game out of the playoffs. Thankfully for the Falcons, all of the other so-called contenders (Giants, Panthers, Rams, Vikings, Seahawks, etc.) are all sucking as well. If the Falcons win out, or even drop one more game, they still have a chance to make the playoffs the way the NFC looks right now. But the fact is considering how bad the coaching has been and the way the Falcons have been losing their games, I wouldn’t count on it. Oh well. At least if this leads to Jim Mora, Greg Knapp, Ed Donatell and company getting canned and replaced by a real coaching staff, it might be worth it.

I actually felt bad for Jim Mora on Sunday. When Roddy White dropped a pass that could have easily been a game changing - heck it could of been a season changing TD, and when Mora dropped to his knees on the sidelines I stopped looking at him as an NFL coach and I saw Jim Mora the man. I want this Falcons team to win just as bad as anyone. These past few weeks have just been devestating.

As fans we are so hard on the coaches and the players it’s almost like for some of us our livlihood depends on the Falcons winning every Sunday. I have lived in Atlanta for a long time and here is one thing that I know - before Mike Vick a season like this was the norm, but now our expectations have changed because we all know (even the haters out there) that Vick is capable of so much more. We know that this team can play with the best of them.

Who is to say the Falcons don’t win out the rest of the season…it’s been done before by other teams. It can be done by the Falcons. Unlike all these defeatist Atlanta fans I am not a quitter because I believe that it’s not over until it’s over.

If they don’t win out and they miss the playoff’s there is always next year. More than anythign I love the game and if you fnas can’t just take it for what it is - A GAME - then take a up a new hobby. Quit wasting your energy on hating the Falcons it doesn’t accomplish anything. Your anger isn’t going to make Roddy White a better receiver or the o-line better at blocking. Get over yourselves.

I dont know who should start at QB anymore. ATL needs to show some life after the 3rd quater and we just might have a chance to come back and win some of these games. As for the game on Sunday it all looked good and there was life in the team on O and D, but after the drop from 84 it all just DIED. and as a fan I had no more energy in me to even cheer or try to do anything. I just hink you need an offense that suits Vicks skills. If there was a new coach in Indy(Greg Knapp) and he decided that Indy was going to be a bootleg team and put Manning out on the move, play after play, year after year, you would see all kinds of fans talking about how Peyton Manning sucks. Instead he has a good coach who understands his strengths AND his weaknesses and builds around them. Knapp is trying to put a square peg in a round hole and he’s just breaking the edges off. you are an idiot dishonest abe. you really are.

did my little post and rant really make you LOL? or is honest abe being dishonest?

the point moron was that he is not a thug.

do you get out much dishonest abe?

do you ever interact with fellow human beings, dishonest abe?

have you ever had buddies ask you to go out for a few drinks or to watch a game but you said no because you had other obligations like work, family, school or whatever and then had your friends call you a nerd, a dork, a dweeb, a loser, with the intent of making you feel like you were not cool because you would not party with them or in the case of mike vick you would not go thugging with them?

If you can not understand how most people these days use the term nerd, that honestly makes me LOL! because it only shows the limited amount of social interaction you are getting these days, which by the amount of blogging you have been doing today suggests that you do not get out much, don’t have many friends contrary to your claims above, and that the only social interaction you get with the human race is through your blogging.

So, dishonest abe, you are a nerd just like mike vick.

you are not a nerd because you are intelligent because i do not think anyone on here thinks you are intelligent.

It’s just because just as mike vick in real life is not cool at all because he shelters himself from the harsh world by playing sports & videogames all day & night, you are not cool either because you shelter yourself from the harsh world by blogging your angry little fingers off all day & night.

The big difference though between you and mike is that mike is a nerd who does not hurt anyone by isolating himself from the world when he plays sports & video games whereas you are an angry nerd who lashes out at the world from behind the safety of your little keyboard.

but if you want to correct me on the proper antiquated dictionary definition of nerd, go ahead.

i’ll continue to use the term nerd as many real people are using it in the real world when they are trying to bust their buddies chops

if you had any buddies outside of your fellow bloggers on the AJC, you would know what i am speaking of

I get disgusted when people like Steve Wyche say that the fans should be allowed to say whatever they want - however profane, obscene or personal - to players and coaches just because they buy a ticket.

That is a joke.

There are basic standards of decency - and fools, drunk or not, like the guy shouting at Vick and his teammates after the game are just as much to blame.

Grow up, Steve. You can’t have different sets of standards. Just because someone makes a lot of money doesn’t mean that John Doe in the crowd can crawl around in the gutter.

One underlying truth all the Vick apologists refuse to acknowledge is the fact that YOU MUST BE ABLE TO THROW THE FOOTBALL TO WIN IN THE MODERN ERA. Every teams receivers drop passes every single week! A few dropped passes still doesn’t explain 8/24 and 84 freakin yards. I watched the damn game and the offensive line, while certainly not top notch, did not play as bad as some of you suggest. The reason he has to run for his life is because he can’t read a defense and make a damn throw down the field. He has actually regressed as a QB instead of showing any improvement. The guy is not a leader or championship caliber player. Bench his sorry A$$ and lets see what the backups can do before this miserable season is over.

long time falcon,

Is 14/24, 200-235 yards a good day for a quarterback who rushes for 160 yards. I would say so. A few dropped passes is one thing but repeated drops of touchdown passes is another. Michael Vick certainly has some improving to do but he needs a little support.

Yeah, White should have caught it, but no TD on that play.

If Blank is really thinking of trading Vick, they will try to showcase him (if someone so overhyped could be showcased!). No way they sit Vick.

Just get ready for another decade of pitiful football, courtesy of the Atlanta Falcons!

Mora cannot slip him the tongue before, during, or after the game! Absolutely PATHETIC! What does that say to the other players on the team?? Mora has gotta go and please take Mr. Herpes with you!

You don’t like Vick but don’t lie about him . On the other side of the ball 31 point Vick don’t play defense. our offense line sucks. You would not know leadership if it slept with it. 160 yard is sorry? you are just fu-k up full of b******. you mush be a UGA fan because you got $hit for brains! one cell!

I don’t care how many rushing yards he had because he only put 13 points on the board. Four straight weeks we have scored 14 or fewer points, so please don’t try and tell me the QB isn’t a big reason for that. 14/24 and 200 plus yards, yes that would have been decent but he was 8/24 with 84 yards. So what point are you trying to make? It was everyone elses fault that he didn’t have a big day throwing the football? Typical vick apologists rhetoric once again.

As a true Falcons fan, nothing would satisfy me more than traveling to Miami this year and celebrating a Super Bowl title. However, being that we’re a game under .500 that dream is nothing more than a fantasy.

So, to help pinpont the problem, maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea to do the following:

Let Schaub start for a half. Let’s see if he has any measure of success with moving the offense. Let’s see if the receivers can tract the ball better coming from a 6’4” QB. Let’s see if the offensive line is as offensive as they appear to be with a true pocket passer back there. Let’s see if Knapp’s scheme is truly this predictable.

If Schaub finds himself running for his life and we fail to score - then we know the answer. If he leads us to multiple scores and the receivers actually earn their paychecks - then we know the answer.

I love MV07, but if changes need to be made in this organization let’s just be absolutely clear that the right changes are being made. Falcon fans, what’s your take?

In all my days as a coach, I have never seen anything like Arthur Blank pushing Vick in a wheelchair when he was hurt. Then Jim Mora is kissing Vick in the tunnel prior to the game! They have lost control of the team..the inmates are running the asylum. There is no respect for authority when the owner and head coach are kissing the black a$$ of a crappy hoodrat quarterback. I am glad the Smith family fired me a long time ago! The Falcons are a joke..they should just change the team name to Atlanta Hoodrats!!

ok just so i have this correct. Vick flips off the fans, looks like an extra in a snoop dog video and most everyone on here supports him. He is not wrong, he is playing poorly because of his team, his coach etc. but with a chance that you can get a class act like Glavine back into the citys sports scene, all i read is he is a traitor, he is union this union that, he sold out. No he left for a guarenteed paycheck bottom line, Sgt shultz the gm offered a bunch of team option contracts and he took the offer from the other guy. but let your gangster wanna be non accurate passing QB flip off the home team fans and all is right with the world. Kinda says alot about the state of the fan today, aslong as the player is flash all is ok, but if the guy is class we are gonna micro disect his financial so called greed. so congrats ATL, you will keep your QB, in the meantime, the class guy who wants to pass a milestone in the city where his kids live, will probably return to the north where he has recieved respect and appreciation from both fans and ownership, and take with him as he did four years ago, my cheering, my enthusiasm and my love of the game.

Overall, blacks tend to be much more racist when one of their own is involved. Personally, I would not care if Vick was purple if he was winning games. Well, if you’re a Braves Fan since ‘66, that makes you old enough to harbor a whole lot prejudices, Bravesfansince1966.

Makes me wonder, Bravesfansince1966, if you don’t happen to think that all of “those people” are thugs.

Men of you age, who grew up in the south in the early and middle years of the last century, well, let’s just say you’re not the most tolerant bunch.

Me, I was born in 1960. And my father was much as you were. He wasn’t blatant in his racism. But it was obvious to me, and I promised myself I’d never harbor such hatred in my heart like the old man.

I just watched 12 Angry Men on A&E earlier. There’s a juror on there who could probably pass as you, Bravesfansince1966. Y’all know which one I’m talking about.

Bravesfansince1966, when you’re calling a man who has shown absolutely no tendancies to be a thug, criminal, or however you want to label him, it’s best to not date yourself, racist. It makes it pretty obvious your true feelings, and it makes it very hard for you to deny them later.

Crass Realist,

Saying the Vick sucks is not racist.

Saying that Vick is a thug is racist.

Here is the definition of “Thug” from Dictionary.com

Thug: 1. a cruel or vicious ruffian, robber, or murderer. 2. (sometimes initial capital letter) one of a former group of professional robbers and murderers in India who strangled their victims.

Here is the definition of “Quarterback” from Dictionary.com

Quarterback- 1. a back in football who usually lines up immediately behind the center and directs the offense of the team. 2. the position played by this back. 3. a person who leads or directs a group or activity. –verb (used with object) 4. to direct the offense of (a team). 5. to lead or direct: to quarterback a public-relations campaign. –verb (used without object) 6. to play the position of quarterback.

Last time I checked, Mike Vick didn’t strangle or murder anyone in the USA or India. In fact, if I’m not mistaken, he is indeed the fella who lines up behind center during a football game and directs the offense. Am I reading this correctly?

You’re already sh*tty fans. Don’t be morons too.

Steve,

What is the threshold for what a fan should be able to say to the players? I’ve paid high prices for tickets too, and I feel entitled to boo or cheer at my team. However, if I pay enough money is it ok for me to make a racial slur or talk about the family members of certain players? Would it be ok for me to throw my beer or ice or whatever at a player if I didn’t like him? I know that didn’t happen, but exactly where is the line for a drunken idiot in the stands? Not excusing Mike Vick(he should be suspended for a game), but where is the responsibility of the fan? I also agree that you took the easy road on this article. There is plenty to report, on the fallout of Mora and Knapp. Where does Roddy White stand among Falcons brass? Will Deangelo Hall ever be disciplined by Falcons coaches? Does the Falcons staff really believe that Matt Schaub could play behind our Offensive line? There are real issues that can be addressed here. Instead, you’ve brought out the ignorance on this board. OK to address it, but this is your only article of the day? C’mon.

Eric C,

bad mouthing your team for 30 years doesn’t qualify as being a resilient fan. Atlanta fans are the most fair weather in the country. Only in Atlanta does the baseball team make the playoffs and the stadium doesn’t sell out. Only in Atlanta do the fans want to replace the best QB the franchise has ever seen. He may not be the best traditional QB ever, but he has won more games in the shortest amount of time than any other QB in Falcons history. Any! So don’t call yourself a resilient fan. Call yourself a dumb fan. Everyone has the right to cheer and boo. Real fans support their teams when they need it though and Atlanta fans do not. Prove me wrong. How many people you see at the Hawks games? 50 including the players? How dare anyone in the city of Atlanta defend their “fan status”

Trust me, fan appreciation factors into free agency and where players want to go. If you want to see some real fans, go to a Redskins game. They can be 1-15 and the stadium is shaking every sunday. Cleveland Browns? Those are some real fans. People in Green Bay live and breathe football. Oakland? A bunch of idiots, but hardcore fans. Falcons fans are a joke. The biggest fair weather fans of them all. I would trade Roddy White and the Falcons fan base for 6th round pick at this point. Prove me wrong.

long time falcon fan,

The point was a quarterback can not throw and catch the ball himself. I am not going to sit here and say Vick is a perfect passer. He simply is not. The truth is, however, professionals should be able to make certain plays. The play Roddy White screwed up was a sure touchdown. Others on the blog have claimed he would have been tackled but if you go back and look at the replay he had the whole field to cut back and score. Vicks numbers were 9/24 for 84 yards. Thats absolutely awful but if you watched the whole game as you claim you will see that a professional receiver - a person who is paid to run routes and catch football- is supposed to make at 4 or 5 of those plays. We are talking about easy catches not one handed grabs like Joe Horn made yesterday. That is a reasonable expectation.

Call me an apologist if you like but you clearly are missing the point. I am well aware of Vick’s inadequacies. I see the same balls you see sail ten yards over receivers heads. I am just asking that receivers make the plays that they are paid to make. They won’t make them all but yesterday was horrible. Again that is a reasonable expectation.

By the way, the biggest reason the falcons lost yesterday, despite the popular sentiments was the leaky secondary and the lack of pressure on the QB. Chris Crocker is a sucker for the pump fake because he is too focused on run support in obvious pass situations. I wish we had gotten Sean Jones from Cleveland instead. D Hall has played awful this season despite what he will tell you. Allen Rossum is a horrible returner and an even worse CB.

If you guys think that Mike Vick sucks, I would hate to hear what you have to say about Eli Manning. He has worse numbers than Vick and can’t run. He has good receivers and an offensive line too.

Dont’ even get me started on Deangelo Hall. This guy is having an awful season and still talks himself up. Here’s a tip, if you’re really that good, other people will talk you up.

Allen Rossum is a 5th string back up, so he is what he is. DeAngelo has called himself “The next Deion”. How many Hail Mary’s did Deion get burned on? How many times did a receiver with one shoe on run right past Deion? Shut up and cover somebody already.

Didn’t Rossum make 2.6 mil last year…I realize he is a fifth stringer but that is a bit much for an inadequate return specialist who gets burned more than Tim Mckyer.

I agree that Allen Rossum is overpaid as a return specialist. He has been pretty good on kickoffs but not so much on punt returns. I expect more from his return game, but he wasnt’ paid to be a defensive specialist. I thought it was a $1 mil salary last year, but that’s not the important part. The important part is that no one in Atlanta is earning their pay check. Not one person.

The whole deal is this: The team lost—not just Vick. His mistake was throwing the “DIRTY BIRD” at the fans that feed him. There’s no guarantee that the drop by White would have change the game such that the Falcons would have won. The Saints came to win. They were the better team and they won because everyone played their parts. Vick scrambling only gave the Falcons an opportunity to get closer to the goal of trying to get a touchdown but it didn’t help. He’s overrated. I still say put him at wide receiver and let Schaub try to change the dynamics of the team. Besides, at this point, Vick may as well get use to the “boos” and the criticism because it’s not going to stop. He will probably be booed by his home fans as well as away fans. Fine him because that’s what the rules say. He’s not exempt. Move on from that point and look at ways to change the team. The Falcons does not have what it takes anyway because they don’t play as a team. You only have a few players offensively: Vick, Crumpler, Dunn and Norward. And the plays are the same. You can almost call the play before they play it. As far as those fakes Vick did to get the runs, how many times did he think he could get away with it. That was transparent. Now for Crumpler. He had the nerve to drop to his knees when the rookie White drop the ball like he’s some superstar receiver. He sorry a* has dropped balls too. Change the receivers, your offensive blockers and Deangelo Hall who constantly gets burned and you might have something to work with. Chalk up the lost and get ready for next season. This one is over for the Falcons. The Saints just put a whipping on them. Did anyone see Arthur Blank rubbing Vick’s leg? Mora kissing his helmet? Hmmmm, maybe there’s a little more there than the eyes can see.

I’m sorry but Vick is not the best QB in the league. I wouldn’t even put him in the top 5. From what I’ve seen, he doesn’t read defenses that well, can’t call line coverage’s all that well, doesn’t throw well, and doesn’t seem to work the pocket all that much. Instead of buying time in the pocket and open up throwing lanes he just takes off. Granted his O line has some protection problems but when you don’t put them in the best coverage option how can you expect them to do their job?

I’m looking at this from the outside as I’m obviously not an Atlanta fan. I do like the team somewhat, but Vick is not the best QB in the league, I’m sorry. Anyone who thinks that just plain does not understand the QB position and what is required of it. And I’m not trying to call anyone out here or say that anyone doesn’t understand the game. I’m just saying that as an NFL QB, Vick isn’t a “great one”. He’s an incredible athlete, there’s no doubt about that. But the QB position isn’t about that necessarily. Mobility is good, with out a doubt, but being cerebral is more important. You look at guys like Manning and you can see that he is what the position is all about. Reading the defense, calling the correct coverage or audible, and stepping up and throwing. Vick may be one of the best athletes in football, but absolutely not the best QB. Not even in the top 5 or 6. Anyone who thinks he is just being a homer. Everyone knows that QB’s like Manning and Brady are by far the best QB’s in the league.

The Patriots have played Vick before and basically shut him down. When we played Atlanta last year with Shaub in at QB, we had a real hard time stopping Atlanta. I’d take a game vs. Atlanta with Vick in anytime over a game with Shaub in. And if there was 1:15 on the clock, 4th quarter, no time outs, with 80 yards to go and the SB on the line, you know who most of you would take out of all the QB’s in the league. It’s times like that when QB’s show why they are the best.

I don’t care HOW MUCH a fan pays for tickets, it doesn’t give them the right to do or say anything to these athletes. Wasn’t a fan removed from a basketball game last month when he called Mutumbo a “monkey”? Not only that but his season tickets were taken away and he’s not allowed back for the entire year!!

The folks who are supposedly “sooo upset” are the same racists who whine/cry about Vick every week, whether the team wins or loses.

If it wasn’t for Vick last Sunday the score would have been 31 - 0!! Anybody that knows ANYTHING about the game of football can see that the O-line and the receivers SUCK…not to mention the secondary!!

I guess Mike is suppose to pass, catch and block for himself?

I don’t think most of you rednecks even watch the game…you only read Mike’s stats on Monday morning..lol Go watch Hockey and NASCAR, because Mike Vick is here to STAY..PERIOD!! The ONLY way you will see Matt Schaub is if Mike is injured of if the score is 30 - 0 in the 4th quarter!!

The facts. Mike Vick IS the Falcon franchise, it doesn’t matter how he performs or how many people he flips out. Big name players will not and cannot be treated the same as other athletes, it is just the way life is and it is what our sports society has created, so there is no reason to complain about it on this blog. I watched Vick at Virginia Tech and he almost singehandedly put the Hokie program on the map, with the 1999 championship game. I did not see him as the complete QB that others did but I knew his ability to run and the excitement that he created for the fans would get him into some very big money. He came out of the Projects at Tidewater and did not have an easy life growing up but he did what any youngster dreams of doing; using his talent to make a place for himself and his family. He is a human being like everyone else and is still very young. There is no way he has the capacity to absorb and process all of the things that are required of him or how to handle it all. All of this comes with the territory and hopefully he will not self-destruct under the pressure that is going on now and will continue to go on. The best thing that falcon fans can do is to try and support him because he isn’t going anywhere. The sad part of this whole debacle is that Jim Mora does not have the liberty nor courage to help this young man get his life and playing into perspective. Coddling is not the answer for an adult. Imagine if he could address the problem like the Giants coach did yesterday with his quarterback. At some point you have to do the right thing and take constructive, beneficial steps to help the star player and the team. You cannot totally blame fans who are frustrated because they are paying a hefty tab week in and week out, so they have expectations of this star player and the team. I would like to see Mike Vick show some grit and step aside for a week’s game and it may do a great deal for everyone.

If I had a dollar for every criticism of Knapps conservative and predictable play calling, I’d be well off. The complaints are always the same. He calls the same plays, in the same situations and gets the same results.

GUESS WHAT, THESE BLOGS ARE FILLED WITH THE SAME PREDICTABLE COMMENTS THAT GENERATE THE SAME PREDICTABLE RESPONSES. AFTER A LOSS, THE SAME MORONS START POSTING THE SAME STUPID COMMENTS, WHICH CAUSES ANOTHER SET OF MORONS TO REACT WITH THE SAME STUPID RESPONSES. SOME OF YOU ARE DOING THE SAME THING, ON THESE BLOGS, THAT YOU ACCUSE KNAPP OF DOING IN GAMES. WHEN SOMEONE REPEATEDLY MAKES THE SAME NEGATIVE COMMENTS, OVER AND OVER, THEY AREN’T TRYING TO MAKE A POINT, THEY’RE TRYING TO GET A NEGATIVE RESPONSE. AND SOME OF YOU FOOLS BITE THE SAME HOOK OVER AND OVER AGAIN. JUST IGNORE ALL IGNORANT COMMENTS, ESPECIALLY ABOUT VICK, THAT INVOLVES LITTLE, IF ANY, LOGIC OR COMMON SENSE. THAT WAY, WE CAN ELIMINATE ALL PERCEPTIONS OF RACISM, WHETHER REAL OR IMAGINED.

Let’s restore these blogs to their rightful purpose, which is discussing the and exchanging constructive ideas about the Falcons. Leave the inbreeds and the overly sensitive reactionaries to themselves. Both groups are fueled by the same ignorances and racially charged issues.

I will leave you with a statement that should sum up these issues. ALL RACISTS ARE NOT WHITE, AND ALL N—-ERS AREN’T BLACK. PEACE EVERYONE.

Fans have put forth numerous reasons for the Falcons losing ways. Some of the reasons given are Vick, injuries, the REC’s, and poor coaching and play selection, to name a few. The truth is, it’s a combination of all the above and then some. There is no single cause for the teams collapse.

Donatell needs to realize that using the same conservative DEF, that got him fired as the Packers DC, is going to get him fired again. The same man to man DEF teams successfully use against us will work against them. It frees more players to blitz the QB and we have the personnel to impliment it. Knapp calls the same running plays in the same situations, especially on 1st and 2nd downs, until we get in the redzone. Then he forgets what got us to this point and starts calling one pass play after another. He needs to have more confidence in his Oline.

Vick needs to stop trying to make every poorly implimented pass play successful. He needs to go to Mora and demand Knapp give him more on field control. Then he can audible to plays, or formations, to overcome the DEF set, rather than attempting to outrun or outmanuver it. And last, but certainly not least, players need to be more accountable. DEF players, especially the secondary, need to reconfirm individual assignments before breaking the huddle. The same applies to the OLine, and the REC’s should concentrate on getting separation from the DB and catching the ball, above all else.

If we just make these adjustments and/or commitments, we can win all of our remaining games. GO FALCONS!!!!!!

Dirtybird and all you Vick luvvers!

Get the facts. You are quick to compare Vick with other QB’sand suggest that he is better than - ?????

For example Eli Manning - clearly not doing well in the NFL today -but, factually better than Vick.

This week he ranks 23rd in the NFL, Vick ranks 25th. Look at NFL.com stats “QB ratings”.

Manning has a 76 QB rating, Vick has a 72. Facts continue to back up the idea that VICK SUCKS. Every year this is true. He is always bottom of the pack.

Last year there was talk of Vick being NFL MVP -what a joke - he ended the season 23rd QB in the NFL.

Bench him - he will never be even marginal. out.

By Ken Strickland

QBWATCHER, stop manipulating stats to justify your preconceived notions. Allow me to put your stats in proper perspective. There are 6 teams with 5-6 records, same as the Falcons, 3 at 4-7, 2 at 3-8 and 2 at 2-9. The QB’s of all these teams have a higher QB rating than Vick. So, having a higher QB rating doesn’t necessarily translate into higher victory totals. Any fool knows that WINNING GAMES is the goal of each team, not generating high QB ratings.

Use your time and energy to generate some meaningful stats and/or reasons for the Falcons recent fall. No one player is responsible for the teams problems and there isn’t a single cause either. Just like winning takes a team effort, this recent losing trend is a team effort as well. Start searching for information instead of justification.

Lets Just Wait & See Some of you tough bloggers are going to puke when you read this but, didn’t Coach Mora just say sure I hear the public outcry for a coaching head to roll, but I’m staying the course (Sounds too much like that lame duck in Washington if you ask me——I’ll puke if Mora uses the word “resolve”). Mr. Blank has heard your good and bad blogs too—trust me he has people that read some of these, after all we are the ones who buy the tickets and merchandise or just people with laptops and opinions?

Maybe Vick is Vick—-I mean this is what we brought to the dance and we should give him a chance to redeem himself at least till the season is over. He just screwed himself with endorsements—-no one is going to touch him now. I have personally been on his case for over a year, but I have to say through all the crap I have dumped on him and now he on Atlanta—-maybe he is trying his best to win—it just doesn’t look like what we expected. Maybe his best isn’t what we want (an inconsistant throwing, running, and now mouthy quarterback), but its clear that Blank and Mora aren’t going to do a damn thing in the middle of the season despite all our venom. I only hope they have kicked a few butts around behind closed door meetings and things will look better in Washington and Tampa or ——— it will get uglier if we don’t get laid or win and soon!!!

QBWATCHER, flunking out of college or getting an F is nothing more than a happening, not an indication of ones capabilities. There are untold numbers of people that drop or flunk out of college and achieve trememdous success. Look at the founder of the Varsity. There are also untold numbers of college grads that are unemployed, driving cabs and/or filing for bandruptcy. As far as your example is concerned, I would rather be an employed dropout than an unemployed graduate.

When Steve Young played for TB, his QB rating was worse than Vicks ever was. He was a strong armed running QB that TB was glad to rid themselves of and literally gave him to SF. They justified the move by saying he was a runner and wouldn’t develop into a passing QB. He would either throw too hard, overthrow or underthrow his REC’s and wouldn’t stay in the pocket. Does this sound familiar? His low QB rating and negative results were not indicative of his ability to function as an NFL QB. It meerly reflected his inability to function within TB’s and/or the NFL’s traditional system. Once matched up to a coach and system that took advantage of his unique talents, history was made.

That’s what happens when you use subjective criteria, like QB ratings, and appitude tests, to judge someones overall abilities. Big Ben was everyones hero and led the Steelers to a SB championship. This yr, he is leading the team to one defeat after another. These 2 extremes demonstrate that there are factors, other than individual ability, that contribute to a QB’s success. It’s no coincidence that under DReeves, when Vick was allowed to audible and had quality veteran REC’s, he was a better passer.

The coaching staff has developed a dynamic rushing attack, but they are unable to develop a passing scheme to compliment it. JGruden publicly stated he would design an OFF just for Vicks unique talents, and ride him to the promise land. All this team needs is an imaginative OC and a progressive DC, to change this franchises furtunes.

It amazings me how many chicken little fans here in Atlanta! You get rid of the only coach who has taken your team to the Super Bowl for a rookie! Dan Reeves just needed Rich McKay and this team who be just fine.

Yes, Mike Vick is the face of this franchise, whether it is good or bad or indifference. Yes, he needs to grow up, but to put throw him under the bus for this team losing streak is foolish and mindbogging. The NFL is made of teams. Teams wins and team lose.

This teams needs to be broken up. The offensive line needs to be broken up. The style of blocking is getting exposed for all to see. The league is cracking down on all of the crummy crack blocking teams like the Falcons have been doing. Your tackles are legit tackles, unfortunately you have backups playing starter’s minutes in your two guards and center.

McKay’s gambles in free agency have been for the most part bust across the board. Hartwell’s body is on its last legs, Abraham is damage goods, and Crocker is no better than the men he was supposed to be upgrading, Keion Carpenter or Bryan Scott. Only Lawyer Millory has been a find and you can see the frustration on his face.

There are most broken pieces to this team that there is enough blame to go around then to just put everything on Michael Vick. Allen Rossum is an one trick pony, a good kick returner but a lousy cornerback. The secondary backups are atrocious. The receivers with exceptions to Brian Finnerman and Alge Crumpler, have shown over the last two years that they couldn’t catch a cold even if one was breathing down their necks.

I don’t have the time to talk about the lack on maturity this team has shown. But to put everything on Michael Vick is just plain loco!!!!!

To all the unwise people who want to get rid of Michael Vick or change his position from quarterback to something else, GET A GRIRP!!!! This town has chased away its great players with exceptions to Jessie Tuggle, Steve B. (Get well soon!!!), Tommy Nobis, Fralic, Kenn, and William Andrews. It would be straight looney to get rid of Michael Vick and instead Matt Schaub. Schaub can’t play the other 21 positions neither at the same time!!!!

Look Atlanta, get a hold of yourselves. You already have one franchise who can’t get its act together already and another one who can’t get out the first round of the playoffs (OOPS, we didn’t get to the playoffs this year either!)

Get you an establish coach and coaching staff who has been in the trenches before (perhaps Jeff Fisher), let Mike and DeAngelo grow up and mature, and let Rich McKay use the draft to build you a team. Then and only then will the Atlanta Falcons go somewhere.

For the rest of the chicken littles out there disguised as Atlanta football fans, please grab some patience and a backbone. The sky is going to be gray and black from time to time, but never falling.

Mike has an amazing impact on folks, rarely are folks luke warm on him. For the first two games - Mike makes the Falcons run O work like no other. For the Steeler & Bengal games he is the second comming of Joe Montana. Opinions waver from he’s putting in the time (read the press from last summer) to he’s to dumb to be a quaterback in the NFL.

The fact is Mike is a mid-tier QB, with suspect O-line, young receivers, a struggling O-Coordinator, and the most incredibile set of physical attributes to ever play the QB role.

The situation in the ATL is complex. Denver blocking scheme with ity-bity O-Line, west coast passing scheme with big receivers and a short inaccurate quaterback, and a huge dependency on the scatback.

Under Dan Reeves Mike actually passed better. Big line, power back - smallish receivers. Also, note Mike’s performances in Pro-Bowls.

I maintain hope that when the O-System is solidified Mike will flourish. Notice that when our O-line was injured - they backfilled with larger linemen from the practice squad and Mike’s passing numbers soared.

In my humble opinion, Schaub can not flourish with the current O-LINE.

Seldmon Of coarse Vick looks good at the Pro-Bowl it’s an exhibition game, no blitz, vanilla defenses, and a very limited offense that even he can understand. It is a perfect stage to show off athletic ability with absolutely no necessity to read defenses, react to complicated defenses or make quick decisions. Vick would also be great in a punt pass and kick contest or battle of the NFL Stars, he just can’t compete as a pro QB where intelligence is half the battle.

It is proof positive that if you remove the mental aspects of the pro game Vick would be a super star, but in the real world QB’s do have to read, react quickly and make good decisions. Unfortunately for Vick and the Falcons on Sundays SMART counts and Vick can’t compete at that level. The coaches know it, I even think that clueless Blank knows it, that is why they all push the Mike Vick Show agenda rather than allowing Schaub or Shockley to attempt to bail out this sinking ship.

SMARTS can make an average athlete a great QB, but if you don’t have the mental acuity to digest the pro game it does not matter haw great an athlete you are, your destined for failure. Mix in Vicks lack of character and the hero worship he receives from his coach and owner and his personal failures drag the entire team down.

Forget the talk about playing Vick at WR or RB, he is just too small just as he proven that he is too small to play QB, he would get killed or make the same dumb mistakes and bad decisions he makes now. Blank was duped into paying the largest salary in the league to a player who is only equipped to run back kicks.

HEsavior,

You really need to look at this team for what they were are. A friend of mine at work said it best at the beginning of the season. “The Falcons have had a loser schedule for the last two years. This year they have a team schedule who has won a couple winning seasons. Now we are going to see what the Falcons are about.” Unfortunately, they have a way to go.

HEsavior, look at the team from a relistic point of view. This team has so many holes and for the last two years have lost to teams that they shouldn’t be losing to. These losses are not just blips to be fixed in one offseason. These faults (the sorry blocking of the offensive line, the lack of covering by the secondary, the lack of solid tackling by the defensive as a whole, the lack of a pass rush, dropped balls by the receivers, and etc)are not just cosmetic blimishes, but foundation cracks. Bill Parcels himself was asked a question last year about his team’s losing record. He stated “You are who you are.” The Falcons have coaching issues as well. HEsavior, just face it. This team has some nice pieces (M. Vick, D. Hall, R. Coleman, K. Brooking, and L. Millory), but the record this team has at this time is what is this.

Ken, Ken, Ken…….

You work so hard on your justification for a slacker.

To compare Steve Young and MVick is …. well, I’m without words. The two are vast opposites in many ways - look into the real history and find little to compare.

University, work ethic, stats, character, and oh yeah that crazy ring on Steves finger - you know, the one Vick will NEVER have. Well, maybe as a back up some day. Or If they put him in his rightful place as a wide out.

But, on to the point - Vick is moving into his SEVENTH year!! ANd with very little sign of complete QB talent. Flashes at times - at best. To blame the Atlanta system or systems- especially after multiple coaches - with different schemes over all these years - is a joke.

Its like changing a corporations strategic plan because one of the executives cant reach his quota numbers. That aint how to do it!! In the real world - that exec is on the street.

Dropped passes, receivers, offense schemes, play calling, dumb luck…….and on it goes. all EXCUSES!

Face reality. Bench him - and move on.

He is NO QB!!!!! take it from the watcher!
