Loss of Kerney crippling

The losses keep mounting – in more ways than one – for the Falcons.

Adding more misery to the consecutive losses to Detroit and Cleveland, Falcons defensive end Patrick Kerney has been sidelined for an indefinite period with a pectoral injury sustained while making a tackle in Sunday’s 17-13 loss to the Browns.

As would have it, Kerney got hurt on a hustle play, chasing down Cleveland tight end Steve Heiden after an 8-yard catch in the second quarter. The Falcons did not disclose the exact nature of the injury, even though Kerney had an MRI exam early Monday.

Losing Kerney, who has a team-high five sacks, is a major blow in a lot of ways. Outside of his production on the field, he is the ultimate team leader. He is the hardest worker in practice, and he’ll play through pain and injury -– that he’s out is proof that this is pretty serious.

His replacements, Paul Carrington and Josh Mallard, have credited Kerney for their development.

Though there should be some legitimate concern about not having Kerney, Carrington and Mallard have taken a lot of snaps this season and they have produced. Falcons defensive coordinator Ed Donatell has to find ways to play to their strengths and hide their weaknesses since they’ve not been asked to take as many snaps as they’re about to take.

In a sidenote, undrafted rookie Tommy Jackson may have moved past Darrell Shropshire on the depth chart at nose guard. Jackson was promoted to Grady Jackson’s backup for the Cleveland game and was a force — something Shropshire, once considered for the starting job, failed to prove.

The loss of Kerney hurts.

What’s more crippling, though, is having Gregg Knapp as our offensive coordinator. So long as he’s calling plays, our offense will be deficient.

Donatell as our Defensive Coordinator doesn’t exactly evoke a sense of confidence either.

Even b4 the defensive injuries started mounting, our D was being mismanaged and abused.

Steve, instead of stating the obvious(losing kerney obviously hurts but there is nothing we can do about it), can you give us some information on whether the inept offense and consistently poor post game press conferences by mora have led arthur to at least consider replacing this regime. Mora is losing favor with many by never holding anyone accountable for these pathetic losses. His comments that everyone needs some adversity and that the way these next 7 games play out will “be awesome” are unacceptable and give the impression that he treats this team as a toy or that he is playing with a franchise on madden. MEMO TO MORA: Two losses to detroit and cleveland(at home) are unacceptable and do not constitute adversity but rather horrible preparation and consistent actions by the coaching staff that alert the players that everything is fine when in fact it is not. I remember mora saying similar things last year after the loss to green bay(i.e. We are fine, this is what the nfl is all about, every team can’t win week in and week out, the nfl is a very close league, the way this plays out will be exciting, etc.) but the fact of the matter is with the talent we have you just cannot lose to these teams and expect to get away with it. INSTEAD OF CONSISTENTLY STATING THE OBVIOUS IN YOUR BLOGS GIVE US SOME INFORMATION AS TO WHAT YOU FEEL MAY TRANSPIRE IF WE CONTINUE TO LOSE GAMES LIKE THIS OR MISS THE PLAYOFFS. FOR GOD’S SAKE THE ONLY PEOPLE WORTH ANYTHING ON THE AJC SPORTS SECTION ARE SEKOU SMITH AND THE UGA FAN BLOG. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GIVE US SOME OTHER INFORMATION.

I really enjoy the games when Vick is at his best, but I cannot take the bad losses no longer. I understand when Georgia has a bad season. Those are kids. The Falcons are supposed to be grown men. Professionals at their trade.

I am tired of watching a lousy Vick during these games. In fact I am tired of Vick period. The Falcons build you up with good wins and beat you back down with the losses.

Sunday sealed the fate of Mora and company. June Jones only lasted 3 seasons with one playoff appearence in 1995. That was without Mr. Vick. They have plenty of time to right this ship. He was fired with the OLD ownership. Surely Blank being the businessman he is, will SH&*T Can Mora like a real boss-man!

Both starting defensive out. Two members of the secondary out and our “beloved” starting middle linebacker continues to sit. Unless the backups step up I don’t see this season turning out the way we all hoped. It’ll be a great joy to me if we can even finish 8-8. Only two teams we have left to play have a losing record and you know how we play against those types.

Steve, for god’s sake could you please stop stating the obvious(losing kerney obviously hurts but there is nothing to be discussed regarding it as there is not much what we can do but see what these young guys can do) The real question here is whether the inept offense and horrible post game comments by mora after each loss have signaled to arthur blank that there needs to be a regime change. Mora constantly says things like “the nfl is a tough league,” “the way the season will play out now is going to be awesome,” “everyone needs some adversity in their lives I know i do.” The fact of the matter is losing to the lions and browns is unacceptable and he never takes accountability for anything instead using the nfl contains alot of parity excuse. It is pathetic and I think is leading the majority of fans to lose all confidence in him. The bottom line is that he is a better politican than football coach and this team is going nowhere with him and his idiot staff at the helm. INSTEAD OF GIVING US THESE WORTHLESS BLOGS, GIVE US YOUR OPINION ON WHAT YOU THINK MAY TRANSPIRE IF THIS TEAM MISSES THE PLAYOFFS OR CONTINUES TO LOSE GAMES LIKE THIS. YES KERNEY’S INJURY HURTS BUT WHAT MORE IS THERE TO SAY ON THE SUBJECT. FOR GOD’S SAKE, THE ONLY PEOPLE AT THE AJC WHO GIVE WORTHWHILE COMMENTS OR OPINIONS ARE SEKOU SMITH AND THE UGA FAN BLOG. PLEASE LET US KNOW WHAT THE FEELING IS ON MORA, THERE IS NO WAY HE CAN ESCAPE ALL RESPONSIBILITY FOR BOTH THIS SEASON’S AND LAST SEASON’S DEBACLES. I RECALL HIM SAYING SIMILAR THINGS AFTER THE LOSS TO GREEN BAY LAST YEAR AND NOTHING CHANGED.

any news on Abraham? they said 3-4 weeks about 3-4 weeks ago …

I will give credit to Donatell this week - despite all the injuries he prepared the defense well - we lost the game on offense and on turnovers.

Also, we should all understand that making coaching changes in the middle of the season doesnt solve anything. if any changes are going to be made they will be made after the season.

I’m tired of Mora’s press conferences. We heard the same crap last year - “our guys play hard” … “our guys don’t point fingers” … “we have a bunch of character guys” … “our guys are going to fight.” Enough already. When will we see some improvement?

After watching the game and reading Schultz’s article, it seems as if the team has lost all confidence in the coaching staff, particulary on the offensive side of the ball. Now I understand why T.O. was in Knapp’s face a few years ago. He has no creativity and is way too predictable. We need to get rid of that guy ASAP.

Sunday Scene: Falcons rushing the ball well. It’s 4th and 1. Knapp calls a pass play to our receivers who drop more pigskin than Kermit the Frog on his wedding night.

PLEASE FIRE KNAPP.

Sunday Scene: Vick rushes for 45(approximate) yards to get close to the Cleveland redzone. It’s the 4th quarter, Vick is winded. So… hand the ball off to Dunn for a couple of plays and let him catch his breath? Bring in Schaub for a play? No… have Vick run the ball again!

PLEASE FIRE THIS TERRIBLE COACHING STAFF!

i am and will continue to support mike vick. the man has physical abilities that nobody has at qb. that said, i would like to see his mental presence. audibles are needed especially during corner blitzes which i don’t think he even sees coming til its too late.

also, knapp should give vick more freedom to select his own plays and audible at the line. teams have seen the dunn off tackle or bootleg play action enough to know that 7 of 10 plays are one of those two. it’s too predictable and a more sophisticated passing game would suit vick better.

as i’ve said all along…put vick in a different scheme mora…plz….the cut blockers don’t help him in the pocket. he needs time to throw like other qb’s. i like the attempt to pass yesterday, but the o-line is not built for passing, which it needs to be. screw the alex gibbs cut-blocking philosophy. what has it done for denver or ATL? not much…

anyone else feel me?

Definitely Larry, you just figure at some point the idiots at this paper would wisen up and hire people more like D O’brien and Sekou. Also, Rich McKay isn’t completely without blame here either. I knew Abraham wouldnt play more than half the season and Ed Hartwell has been an absolute bust with everything but running his mouth incessantly. Who knows what will happen, I just wish Atlanta fans didn’t have to suffer so much with their sports teams because we deserve better.

Abraham is a bum, giving up a #1 for him was a terrible trade. The guy won’t play through minor injuries because he could risk losing money in future contracts (he did the same thing for the Jets a few years ago). When it is time for a new contract he’ll dominate for a few games to get paid again, then he’ll play 4 or 5 games the next season. There is a history there. He’s great when he plays, but is a #1 pick worth the four games he plays? Two recent first round picks have been given up for Peerless Price and Abraham, hopefully the Falcons have learned their lesson of trading high picks for under-achieving veterans.

I too will continue to support the team, but my hopes are fading as fast as these players’ health. This can be filed away in the “it’s just not meant to be” category, because with the sudden rate of things going wrong with this team, they can ill afford to lose any more players. At a certain point, you just need to cut your losses, and call it a season. After watching them play on Sunday, it was a complete mess. All across the charts. This team is not ready for prime time, and I guess it all comes back to coach/leadership and obviously personnel. I will be incredibly shocked if we can win next week, let alone win again this season.

Something is bad wrong and it is up to Blank to set an example and put some fear into this team, Now ! Don’t wait until we lose the next two games ,then it will be too late. What ever we are doing now is not working ! Mr. Blank, I don’t think you want to be known as a loser, so it’s up to you. I would talk to each member of the team (one at a time) and ask them what they thought was the problem. From G.M. on down the line to the Punter. Get some input. Here is something to ponder, the fans that pay the bills are really disappointed. It is up to you now to keep the customer coming back.

Thanks for checking in. I would like to clarify something to those who are looking for a lot of opinions on these blogs. The opinions, per policy, are not to be given by the writers but by the bloggers. That’s why you don’t see many opinions doled out in these blogs. What we try to do is provide information so you can develop your own opinions. Now, regarding Jim Mora, I can tell you that the feeling of the players in the locker room is that they are solidly behind him. They aren’t going to tell me if they aren’t anyways, but there aren’t signs of problems. I’ve been in many locker rooms where dissention is obvious and that is not the case right now. Players are angry with the recent losses, but no one seems to have stopped believing in the coaching staff. My colleague, Mark Bradley, a columnist whose job is to state opinions, today asked Mora why he gives such vanilla answers to the press and doesn’t call anyone out after games like Sunday’s loss to Cleveland. Mora responded that what he tells the press and what he tells his team is very different most of the time. Mora said he might call players out in-house, but he won’t call them out in the media. At this point, Arthur Blank is not happy with the losing, but he is reserving judgement until more than nine games are played. Hope this helps.

This team lacks a leader. Mike wants to be a Peyton Manning but a crunch time but he loses presence and end up running the team like Cordell Stewart - AKA Slash. In the end, he begins to resemble Ron Mexico more and more.

Does the QB coach (who has OC experience) know our current system and plays well enough to take over for Knapp?

If I was Blank I would fire Knapp right now, before this season is totally lost.

He called a terrible game. One of many.

I have to agree that this was Vick’s worst game, he fumbled it away after all. But with more freedom to call his own plays and audible he might not have been in that position of running into a defense that knew the coming play while he was gassed.

That said, Mora should bench him for a series every time he fumbles his loaf of bread - maybe then he would improve his ball security.

And is Mora being truthfull about William’s injury keeping him out Sunday or is he really that bad a draft choice?

Hey — we are showing different D
“reads” every week! The same front 7 people don’t show up two weeks in a row! (Except Boley, Brooking and, until now, Kerney.) I’m prepared to cut Donatell some slack, but Knapp has just got to do what it takes to give MV7 more time behind the line of scrimmage to throw. (And, then MV7 is just going to have to tuck it when he sees an approaching opponent.)

Speaking of MV7, I have to believe he was suffering from a slight concussion after that hit where he whiplashed against the turf. I mean, why else would he line up NOT behind center for that play. YIKES>

I’m going to have to publicly eat my emails. Roddy White had more catches yesterday than my fav, Ashley Lelie. Ashley shoulda had that one for a TD. While I’m still no fan, I have to admit he made better catches.

I’m a huge Brooking fan, but he ‘shudna’ spiked that ball for a penalty. He’s a 9-year veteran.

You have NO IDEA how painful it was to watch your team since age 7 fall to a 2-6 team yesterday, sitting by your husband, a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan, who admitted before the game the Falcons should win.

Baltimore plays very dirty. This is going to be the worst…

Steve — thanks for getting involved in the discussion.

The fans seem to be really frustrated with Knapp, particularly since he doesn’t give Vick the authority to audible.

Has anyone thought to ask Mora or Knapp why they don’t let Vick audbile? What do they think of Vick’s comments regarding the Browns knowing what play we were going to run?

This isn’t the first time VIck has hinted at the Falcons’ offense being much too predictable.

Jimmy Williams must be REALLY BAD! A 2nd round draft pick and he is not even the nickel CB?

It is time for Mora to go, I have followed the NFL way to long and you just know that Mora and this current staff have gotten all they can out of Vick and Comapny. Mora is a great character guy, but the game yesterday was painful to watch. The Falcons just had no energy.

Bring Kirk Ferentz in from Iowa. Great character, Belichick disciple and we signed his son to a free agent contract this past offseason. He is a offensive line typ of coach a real in your face approach. Arthur Blank please put him at the top of your list!

Steve Wyche: Thanks for your follow-up comments and clarification on the AJC position. I can’t imagine that Arthur Blank could be pleased at this point. He wants to win a Superbowl trophy more than anything yet Mora has only given him one good year and the team appears to be heading backwards yet again. The injuries are what concerns me the most. Ever since Mora & McKay came on board, it seems we have had 3-5 key injuries every year. Does that seem odd to you? One thing they have proven is that Vick is not the lifeblood of this team. People used to say if Vick got hurt that our year was over. Now, Vick is merely a pawn amongst more important injuries.

Hearing Mora on the radio today summarized the Falcons problems. Jim said that he is excited about the team because they never quit last Sunday. Never quit?? These guys are paid more in one year than most posters here may make in a lifetime and I wouldn’t expect them to quit during their only game of the week. Besides, the Falcons were not out of that game until the Vick fumble so there was no reason to quit. Until Mora gets an attitude with this team it will be more of the same. He is like a weak parent whom the kids ride roughshot on.

The game next Sunday will be UGLY! I say Vick gets sacked at least 5 times and turns the ball over 4 times. The Falcons will be fortinate to put 6 points on the board. This season is OVER, folks. Mora is already blowing the injury smoke up Blank’s pant leg to preserve his job for next year. If he, Knapp, or Donatell is not fired by kick-off next year, this fan base will be incensed.

Making matters worse, look at the emergence of teams that were worse than Atlanta when Mora took over. San Diego, Chicago, New Orleans, Cincinati, to name a few. Atlanta is now heading backwards and doesn’t have the hope of Vick being a superstar to carry them anymore. Vick has proven what he is in the NFL and it isn’t half of what many had hoped for. Would you take Tomlinson and/or Brees for Vick today? No brainer.

Steve,

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, SOMEONE IN THE MEDIA PLEASE EXPLAIN TO US WHY GREG KNAPP DOES NOT LET ANY OF HIS QB’S AUDIBLE OUT OF HIS TERRIBLE PLAYCALLING SO THEY CAN ACTUALLY BEAT A DEFENSE THAT KNOWS WHAT IS COMING!!!

Please, Steve, you have to let us know, because ti driving my insane to see the Falcons just run the ball with 9 men in the box consistantly. It drives me insane to see Vick see a blitz coming, yet still have to take a 5 step drop behind that line, and run for his life, when if he was just like any other veteran QB, he could have audibled into the RIGHT play.

And for you racist Vick haters, Schaub isn’t allowed to audible either.

**WHY, Steve… WHY!!! Why is Greg Knapp so freaking stupid?! Why is is ego so outsized that he doesn’t allow his offense the best chance to win?!!!

I am sick and tired of Greg Knapp. I am sick and tired of watching the offense run dumb play after dumb play that could be avoided if the QB could audible out of it!!!

For the love of God, Steve, please explain to us why the Falcons are the only team in football which does not allow the QB’s to audible. PLEASE!!!

Folks,

As far as I know, Vick does have some flexibility in terms of audibles, but I’ll be sure to get at Greg Knapp this week for clarity. As for Jim Mora’s job security, it all comes down to wins and losses and ownership patience in the NFL. If the Falcons totally collapse, dissention becomes prominent and some of the in-house stuff starts getting public, it is never good for a coach. But if the team competes, looks like it knows what it is doing and shows some signs of promise, the coach tends to be safe. Arthur Blank was not happy about the way the season ended last year, though and a repeat performance or worse could test his patience.

Well I certainly don’t own a football team with $100,000 million payroll. However, if I did and witnessed the poor excution and unprepared players of the last two weeks, I would have to question the coaching staff’s ability to get our team ready to play at a high level. Owners have a large ego to even own these high profile teams anyway and certainly being in the lower revenue tier won’t help Mora keep his job if he doesn’t win. A bad loss in Baltimore will probably cost someone on the staff their job. It will be interesting this weekend.

Kerney’s loss hurts most because as inept as a coaching staff as we have, we need all the veteran leadership on the field we can get. Kerney is arguably the most vocal veteran leader on the field, and losing his presence means guys like Milloy, Hall, Coleman, and Brooking better step up and fill that void.

Knapp not allowing Vick to audible only emphasizes the arrogance and stubbornness of this coaching staff, which from day 1 has shown an alarming inability to adjust within the game and between games. Nearly every other QB in the league at least has the flexibility to change offensive line blocking schemes to pick up blitzes and call hot routes to beat the blitz (hell, I even get to do that when I play Madden). For a coaching staff to not allow the QB to do this is inexcusable and makes it apparent that they can’t accept that they ever will be wrong. Maybe this is tolerable if Knapp actually makes the right play calls, but he calls some of the most gimmicky and ridiculous plays I have ever seen in an NFL offense. I don’t know that Vick would be any worse calling the plays himself than Knapp is. Hell, let Matt Schaub call plays, half the people on these blogs seem to think he is the reincarnation of Albert Einstein or something, he should be smart enough to run an NFL offense better than Knapp.

The largest disfunctional group of people on the planet may be fans of the Falcons.

First of all Steve is the writer who has to come up with something every day and I can’t imagine the Falcons being in a mood to lay it all on the line for a writer. Remember the blog is seperate from the column.

It’s almost as if some people don’t really come alive unless the team is struggling.

If we’re po’d what do you think Arthur Blank is? This is a $545 million layout and that’s not counting those little expenses every year like say…payroll.

If we’re p**d then his blood is boiling. I like having an owner who is a fan of the team and wants them above all to win (and if you don’t get that then you haven’t been paying attention to pro sports in Atlanta)

He’s a fine owner and enough about Vick. The guy can pass and the guy can run but man every week somebody is dropping a TD. Plus the routes STINK!

Knapp’s got guys who can’t get seperation running streak routes. Technically the team isn’t well coached. Six first half penalties combined with the out of control meltdown last season.

Ahhh, alas poor Jimmy Mora, we hardly knew ye.

Michael,

I think I am in the category of most Falcon fans. I want to love Michael Vick(My 2 year old son has his jersey), but his tremendous inconsistency and lethargic ways about him make it tough. Yes we all know that at least 5 passes where dropped. Some of the passes where behind the receivers, some maybe not to the touch that might have truly been needed. I know what your thinking this is the NFL ya gotta make those plays. Agreed, I believe, that Mora and Knapp have taken Vick as far as they can, and its time for new blood.—Kirk Ferentz

Of course Vick could audible! What would the coaches be able to do, bench him? In fact he audibles all the time when he decides to scramble instead of pass. Chill out everyone!

I agree with everything that you guys are saying … but for crying out loud … when in the past have the Falcons had success as they did in the last 3 years? we had 11-5, 8-8, and 5-4 (currently) seasons (all in the playoffs or in the hunt).

these days we have the owner, the GM, and the coahces that have accomplished a lot in the past few years, yet noone is satisfied one bit because we lost two games in a row …

just look at it from this point of view - what did the Steelers do when they went thru tough couple of years some seasons ago? did they fire the coach and the staff? No. and it all paid of handsomly hasnt it? stability in the organization will bring results - IM NOY SAYING that changes should never be made, but people come on … its the middle of the season and we are 5-4 in the hunt for the playoffs.

It is amazing how we all think we could be head coahces in the league. there is a reason why they are coaching the Falcons and we are not. Chan Gailey once said:” what most amazes me about this is that every single fan or a spectator thinks they know how to do my job!” and oh my god he is right … just listen to yourselves. If Mark Bradley is such a smart a** why doesnt he apply for the coaching job - MORA SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILTY! - as far as i know he did take FULL responsibility for what is going on with the team.

Thus far with all the adversity that this team has gone thru in the past two years the worst we have seen was an 8-8 season. lets look at some other teams - the Eagles last year? not too good right, Tampa Bay this year (hmm), if this is the worst we are going to see from this coaching staff i take it any day.

also - the Patriots have lost 2 in row (yes i know they were against better teams, but still they did lose 2 in a row) - is anyone talking about firing Belichik?

Now go and talk all about how much of an idiot i am …

I like Mora , I do not agree with the offensive scheme. We had to pass 41 time the other day , if you watched the game we could not even get 5 yards a carry on clevland. The majority of the people on this blog dont analyze whats really happening , you have your uga educated bogus opinions about the qb and who should be playing. They should hire Sam Gash , one of the jets offensive coaches to be the offensive coordinator. He was great player and won alot of superbowl. The jets offense is rolling now because of him and the other offensive coaches on the staff.

Anybody wonder what Arthur Blank is saying to Mora during the game, like he just about always does in the middle of the 4th quarter?”

I hope he is saying something along the lines of “do you wonder for whom the bell tolls? It tolls for you.”

Atlanta has a lot of money sitting on the sidelines. In past off-seasons, Atlanta has agressively pursed high profile free-agents (most of them busts) most notably Hartwell & Abraham, both of which are injury prone. Hartwell has started 6-7 games and Abraham maybe 3 games? Instead of pumping money into these two players, maybe general managemnt should have invested in depth. Now we have a 2nd year player and an undrafted rookie free-agent starting. Let the purging of the Falcon front office begin, starting with Mora and his stooges. While they are at it, demote Vick and begin the Matt Schaub era.

This team lacks depth and that is where it hurts the most right now. New England came here last year with 11 starters down and managed a win. Green bay came here injured and beat us with a third-string RB Samkon Gado. Look at Seattle this year… Their MVP RB Alexander and Pro-bowl QB Hasselbeck are injured and are winning games with back-ups. All these teams continue to win because of their depth. Why can’t Atlanta do the same…?

The solution to the Falcons problems is to let Arthur Blank coach the team. He would do a better job than Mora, who is lost. First, Art would let Michael Vick play in the first and third quarters and run on every down. He could let Matt Schaub play the other quarters and throw on every down. This would do it. Vick could do a fashion show at half time with the beanie scarf and Deangelo Hall could wax eloquent on how great of a player he is. It is time to let Arthur run this team from the field; it is his team so why not? Come on, Arthur, I’m voting for you.
