Secondary stretched thin

The Falcons lost cornerback Jason Webster for at least a month because of a torn groin muscle. Webster is the second of Atlanta’s top five defensive backs to be lost this week.

Safety/nickel back Kevin Mathis is out for the season after fracturing his neck on the opening kickoff of Sunday’s 30-14 loss to Detroit.

Jimmy Williams will start in Webster’s place.

Webster is probably the Falcons’ most criticized defensive player, with his coverage skills the reason why he’s come under attack. Williams, who the Falcons drafted in the second round to one day take over for Webster is now on the spot.

Though some may view Webster’s loss as no big deal, losing him and Mathis at once puts a great drain on Atlanta’s depth and puts some players on the field that might or might not help the vulnerable secondary. For all of Webster’s perceived shortcomings, Williams could not unseat him.

Williams was set to have been weaned into things by taking over for Mathis at nickel back but now, as teammate DeAngelo Hall put it, the talking is through and it’s show time.

Allen Rossum will take over at nickel back, something the team ideally does not want to do because it increases the probability of injury to its big-time kickoff and punt returner.

DeAngelo said the talking is through? I’ll believe it when I see it.

Steve who will take Webster’s roster spot?

Well Falcons fans, we are getting what we wanted. Webster out, Williams in. Let’s see if our wish is a good one.

Steve,

What happened to Chris Cash was he injured or just waived by the Falcons? We could use him now.

“For all of Webster’s perceived shortcomings, Williams could not unseat him.” So what?

For all of Lehr’s shortcomings, Mora and co. would not replace him. We all see what happened when Clabo and Alexander were plugged in. Further, despite R. White’s obvious shortcomings, it took the coaches several weeks to replace him. That just shows that the coaches don’t have a clue.

I expect Williams to make a few mistakes, but he certainly won’t be any worse that Webster. Also, Williams will only get better.

It will be interesting to see if Donatell continues to run that zone crap.

falcon80, come on, dude. Cash was injured in the preseason.

We’ll probably sign Leigh Torrence.

I thought Cash was injured during preseason. Why dosent Donatell let D Hall play man up and zone the other receiver this way we could slide help to the other corner and not play so soft.

Let the man play. The season is already shot. Mora and his buffoons on the coaching staff can not right this ship. Give William some experience for next year when we have a new coach and go back to man coverage and not this soft zone crap.

Lets see now how many people have seen the movie Remember the Titans? Thats right Mr White seems to fit right in the mold of the kid who could not hold on to the ball. But once he moved over to D he became a terror. Roddy don’t need to catch the ball just get to it and try. If he catches it great but if he does’nt so what it is a knock down. How many defensive backs have played both ways? It may work.

This is football and players get hurt, so we have to suck it up and play good football. If we have good coaches then the time is now to show us. The next few weeks are big for this coaching staff and if we miss the playoffs it is time for a change! Earn your check Mora . Lets see what this team is made of.

Webster was giving us his optimum production and that equaled toast on most occassions.

Williams’ upside and potential were worth making this substitution WEEKS ago! The results couldn’t have been much worse.

I am truly disappointed in the coaching staff’s use of personnel this year. They can only blame themselves for the criticism they’re receiving.

Has anyone heard anything about the Falcons signing Safety Lance Schulters formerly of the Broncos? I could have sworn I saw it on ESPN last night. Any enlightenment would be great.

By Doc Reem

November 9, 2006 05:01 PM | Link to this

We did sign Lance Schulters for help at Safety so that should help us out some. I actually like the postion the Falcons are in right now. I wouldn’t wish injury on anyone. However I was never convinced that Forney was all that good anyway and having Alexander and Clabo in there now might be an upgrade considering what they did together against the Steelers and Bengals. As for Webster I hope he gets well soon but it’s time for the fans to see what J.Williams can do. I don’t belive anything thing the coaches say anymore about their assesment of a player and that’s sad to say, but true! The Kevin Mathis injury I hate because dude was really good at nickel coverage and he was a tough competitor. This puts more presure on the coaching staff and it should. We still have enough depth to win but they have to be coached properly. That includes the right schemes on both sides of the ball. I say if the coaches can’t win with what’s left get em the hell out of here! Suckas…

If the Falcons continue to use a soft zone, it doesn’t matter who’s back there. Looks like we’re just going to have to outscore opponents in shootouts. Might be good if it changes Knapp’s approach to the games.

What has happened to Rod Colman? Yes, our secondary sucks, but we need to find some way to put pressure on the QB. We seem tocontinue to sign bit money free agants who get hurt as soon as we get them. Will Abe and Hartwell ever play together?

By morris

November 9, 2006 05:36 PM | Link to this

Boy losing webster is going to about as devastating as losing LEHR. In his absence our secondary will probably show great improvement just like our line did when lehr was suspended. With williams physicality and hall’s speed why don’t we try a little bump and run coverage. That would allow us to send more pressure on the QB. I envision williams giving receivers a hard time getting off the line. At 6-2 215 he should be able to disrupt patterns before they get started.

By dirrtybird

November 9, 2006 05:42 PM | Link to this

Rod Coleman is suffering from and playing through turf toe. Ed Hartwell is probably OK but we have great depth at Linebacker. Who knows if Abe will play this season or not. Hopefully we can make it to the playoffs without him and he will boost us then.

Schulters is another Mora guy. Expect him to get a big signing bonus and play over someone who is better than him. That’s the 49er way apparently.

Sometimes an injury here or there actually turns out to better the team. Case in point, Bledsoe goes down, Brady comes in. Young Williams will make mistakes, there is no doubt about that. But at the same time he will be gaining valuable experience. I think we all should prepare for the worse and hope for the best when it comes to the secondary. Pressure on the quarterback is a definite must if we are to get by with our thin secondary. I noticed in the Detroit game that most of our blitzes were sent up the middle and picked up nicely by the Lions. Donatell needs to make his blitz packages more exotic, sending pressure from all angles. Keeping the oppositon guessing as to where the pressure will come from next. Geez, even our blitzes are predictable. It’s time for the coaching staff to earn their keep. The challenge is before them.

big week this week, even bigger next. concern I have with Coleman is even prior to the turf toe he seemed to be a non factor.

Just hope when J-Will is in and struggles (which I’m sure he will) that this board doesn’t go on for weeks about how bad of a draft pick he was. Imo he will dev into a very good corner and we could have a great CB tandem in the NFL.

However imo I would not expect much better in pass coverage right now unless our pass rush gets much better

I wish Mathis, Webster, Abraham,Norwood, and Hartwell speedy recoveries. But when a 5-2 team loses to a 1-6 team it is time to make changes anyway. This is a perfect time for Williams to prove he can play in the NFL. Marlion Jackson may help in the red zone on short yardage situations. Don’t give up the ship but have the life vest handy.

Hey Falcons Fan, so what if D-Hall keeps talking? he’s one of the best DB’s in the biz, and he can back it up. If you ask me, this injury to Webster is a blessing in disguise. Williams is the better back, and the only reason he didn’t start, is because Mora was too loyal to this bum Webster.

Detroit’s Dominic Raiola on Atlanta’s DeAngelo Hall, who hit a sliding Jon Kitna. ‘He really disgusts me as a DB, as a cheap-shot artist. I promise you: If I see him on the field again, I will try to take his head off.’

midniterider hit it right on the head. When you’re ranked 31 against the pass, you can only go up. e.b.,I was thinking the same thing. How can anyone’s season be shot when they are 5-3 at the halfway mark. If the season ended today the Falcons would be in the playoffs. How in the world is the season shot?

I have this prayer - that though Jimmy Williams could not beat out Webster, maybe this stretch of games may allow him to become the ballplayer that Webster will never be. A fomer high school teammate of mine who is a training Coach at Detroit swears that the coaches were screaming at Kitna all week B4 our game. “When in doubt, find Webster”. The same gyu told me that the Detroit coaches saw him as a potential nickel or dime back if the Falcons released him.

Dear lord, if we bring Christian Morton back I’m going to throw up. I saw that he was playing for Carolina, so lets all take a momment to pray that he doesn’t wind up on the Panthers practice squad. Mora/McCay are probably dying to bring that guy back.

I still have nightmares about him getting burned in the NFC Championship game two years ago…and in Buffalo last year…and against New England…and…

Hey Yall:

Jimmy Williams, play your game man. You went through high school and college as a great player. Now it is time to take it to another level. Use your size, strength, and speed to put a pounding on some of these receivers. Cover like you’ve never covered before. It is your time. And Yeah, talk some trash to yourself and to the opposition. It your time , baby!!! Put a hurting on these suckers. Down by law.

Vick will have to carry the team if they are going to win.

retnav has a point, if troy brown of new england can play both wr and cb then perhaps atlanta should consider the same. Fact is, Charlie Frye is going to throw throw throw the ball until his arm falls off to attack the secondary. Reports say that Coleman should play (cnnsi.com) but that can change, I hope he will be able to play so Atlanta can put pressure from the front four on Frye. With the home crowd raging that will inspire this defense.

Also, Atlanta’s receivers must catch the ball to keep the defense going. This might be another shootout and Atlanta must be able to run well to keep Cleveland’s playmakers (Winslow and Edwards) off the field.

I’m hoping the addition of Jimmy Williams to the lineup will have a similar effect to when we lost Forney and Lehr and had to replace them with Alexander and Clabo, which ended up improving the offensive line. Of course, knowing our illustrious coaching staff, Donatell will probably have our secondary playing Cover 4 all day because he doesn’t trust J. Williams in coverage. For real though, Williams can’t possibly be any worse than Webster.

Losing Mathis is a huge deal though. He was probably our 2nd best cover guy after D. Hall, and without him it’s gonna be real tough to match up against teams like Carolina who have 3 good receivers. Especially if our esteemed group of coaches continue to ignore the lack of pressure our front 4 gets on the QB.

I read somewhere that Mora might even consider using Boley or Demorrio Williams in the secondary on some plays, the way he used Julian Peterson in San Francisco. I actually don’t think using Demorrio as a 3rd safety would be too bad of an idea in some situations — the guy is pretty fast and could probably hold his own. Other college linebackers have transitioned to safety and done pretty well before (Michael Boulware for example) so I wouldn’t mind seeing that at least on a couple of plays. Against the Browns and their, uh, sub-par passing game is when you can try out things like that and see what happens.

By Najeh Davenpoop

November 10, 2006 02:55 PM | Link to this

Oh yeah, Schulters is a good player, but he doesn’t give the Falcons’ secondary what they really need, which is a guy who can cover. We already have guys like Crocker and Milloy at safety who can hit — Schulters kinda duplicates what they do already. We desperately need a guy who can match up on a receiver one on one, and right now D-Hall is the only proven guy who can do that. I’m sure there is a corner out there somewhere who can do a decent job covering people man to man — it’s up to the coaches to find this corner.

No one didn’t even mention how the lions whole team jumped on Vick, when he scrambled out of the pocket! Or the late hits when goes out of bounds, constantly going after his legs! Not mention all the strikes too the face! This is why he’s wearing a face shield this year! These are just some of the things Vick, have done too him every game! The Refs don’t protect him, and that’s part of their job is too protect the QB! Now to the business at hand falcon fans, you all is about too witness something great the second half of the season!
