Dealing with injuries
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It was a whirlwind of a day at Flowery Branch, with injuries and their byproducts dominating the current and future state of the team.
Atlanta placed guard Kynan Forney (shoulder) on injured reserve, which means he’s done for the year; signed veteran safety Lance Schulters to replace Kevin Mathis (injured neck-IR) and activated running back Marlion Jackson from the practice squad.
Forney being placed on IR means that Tyson Clabo will assume the starting job for the foreseeable future. Although Matt Lehr returns from his steroid suspension next week, Clabo and left guard P.J. Alexander might remain the starters.
The acquisition of Schulters was more for veteran insurance than for immediate dividends. Schulters is an eight-year veteran who played for Mora in San Francisco, had some solid years with Tennessee and spent last season in Miami. He will be used if starters Lawyer Milloy or Chris Crocker get hurt.
Rookie Jimmy Williams will take over for Mathis in the nickel package, although he will be used as the nickel corner and starting cornerback Jason Webster will be moved into the slot. Second-year safety Cam Newton will take Mathis’s place on special teams.
The activation of bruising tailback Marlion Jackson from the practice squad could signal that backup tailback Jerious Norwood might not be ready to play Sunday against Cleveland. Norwood had an MRI exam done on his right knee following the 30-14 loss at Detroit Sunday and the test revealed a sprain.
Jackson’s, 6-2, 240, is a speedy bruiser who looked strong in preseason and could provide some muscle in short-yardage situations.

damit…here’s to a speedy recovery norwood. your future is bright if you can get back to form.
here’s your chance jimmy…show mora what a jacka$$ he is for not playing you sooner.
clabo will also show mora he should’ve started in detroit. up front killed vick…HEY MORA DITCH THE CUT BLOCK O-LINEMAN AND GO GET PASS BLOCKERS.
the way qb’s run in the NFL is to call pass plays and let the qb take off if nothing is open (see steve young) it doesn’t take a genious to figure that out.

Well here we go again. A few things to think about here. I think Clabo being in there will be a good thing since he played very well when he was in there before. When Lehr comes back keep him on the sideline. PLEASE!
I really worry about the secondary. I really dont know what to think anymore. Im glad Jimmy Williams will be in there some more in the Nickel package. I think we need a bigger body in there to complement Hall on the other side. I know Williams is ancy to make plays and hopefully he will come through. We need a spark in the secondary. But then again it wont help much since we still give the receivers a freakin 50 yard cushion so when teams go 3rd & 21, they make it easily. Its gotta be the most frustrating thing to watch during a Falcons game.
Hopefully Norwood will get healthy soon enough. I do like Marlion Jackson for the goal line situations but if the offense doesnt find a little more consistency, we wont we 1st & Goal very much.

Now that Clabo is back in the starting lineup Vick should get back in the groove again with his passing. I, like everybody else, don’t understand why he was inactive and didn’t play last week. Seemed like a bad decision from a distance. I assume that Norwood’s injury is not good. I know we won’t get any information out of the Falcons facility.

Thanks for the info Steve!
I am relieved to hear that Norwood’s injury is a ‘strain’, though I realize he may still be out for a game or two at least he’s presumably not out for the year with that.
I would love to hear Mora comment a little more in detail on that situation, but overall today’s roster-actions look good to me.

Thank god big body Clabo is playing , i hope norwood injury is not season ending , you never know coming out of the branch , Marlos should have been had his a* on the damn field. Why the hell does 240 pound guy dress in street clothes , that dude has some talent. I think he could be better than f*** ducket. How the hell does Clabo not start last week and can some body catch the damn ball please.!!!

Necessary moves! Good moves! Matt L should have to prove he deserves to start when he returns. I don’t believe the O.line is the major concern - Overall defense is! Norwood has a great deal of potential - get better fast!
Don’t think Hartwell will be the difference maker he was touted to be - maybe injuries, maybe time? The real impact injuries are Finn and Abe. I’ll give Abe the benefit of the doubt for now, but he may not pan out despite his awesome ability if he is out half of games each year! What good it that?
Its been the hot topic but I must for the first time say, the coaching is highly suspect. From Mora on down! I sincerely, hope Blank has conveyed his disapointment in a way that convinces Mora. You’ve got to assume the coaches are doing the best they know how - that is the problem and what scares me! So, several more uninspired, lackluster efforts and they should go on the injured Reserve!

Fire Jim Mora now! His idiocy was directly responsible for the Falcons losing last week. Everyone and their mama was saying that the reason why Vick had two awesome weeks (and we’re talking about guys like Salisbury, Young, Jaws, Bradshaw, Johnson, etc.) was because of the PROTECTION he was getting from the o-line, specificaly his guards.
So what does that most extreme moron Jim Mora do? He starts the highly overrated Keynan Forney (with ONE freaking arm) and destroys the chemistry that Alexander and Clabo had built.
And then that petulant spoiled brat (yes, Mora again) refused to do a full press conference. I guess he was showing restraint, but you know what, a real man admits his mistakes. Jim Mora never admits his mistakes, or tries to correct them. He has an insane loyalty to one of the worst DB’s in football, and I guarantee you all that the worst o-lineman in football will be starting again when he gets back.
Oh yes, Jim Mora will not learn from this mistake, as he has not learned from previous mistakes (like everytime he throws Webster out there or defends him to fans and media), and he will start Matt Lehr.
Because Jim Mora is a stupid, spoiled, petulant child. He’s not a forty-something year-old man. He’s a freaking child. He’s Arthur’s stand-in for an older son, and that’s why Arthur coddles him so much.
We need a mature man to run this team, and not a spoiled child.
I am sick and tired of Jim Mora’s act. I am sick and tired with the way he runs this team, putting the feelings of individual players (Webster, Forney, and soon to be Lehr) over the good of the team. I am sick of his immaturity. I am sick of his antics with the press.
FIRE JIM MORA NOW!!!

* Has ANYONE SEEN ROD COLEMAN? Please Contact me As Soon As Possible! He HAS NOT SHOWED UP AT ANY GAMES, and I Don’t know what the problem could be! Remember…BEFORE, Hartwell, and Abraham…. ROD was our superb force on Defense! He could wreck havock to any opposing lineman and put pressure on the QB by himself. The addition of Grady Jackson, should ONLY help his cause because he is not getting double-teamed! So, please write your letter to the AJC or Falcons to start some type of search for this missing Player!!!!*

I agree with everything Birddawg said times 2. Shows no willingness to correct mistakes, sticks with things that don’t work (scheme and personnel). For that matter, gameplanning seems to be non-existant. Guess he wasn’t paying attention in San Fran. Gees, why, why did they bring that 1980’s crap here? Why, why, why?

I think BirdDawg said it all, maybe a little strong, but on target. How stupid is this coaching staff to start Forney, why not rest him for a couple of games? Then see what he can do. Nope, let’s waste him. By the way, BirdDawg, you forgot to mention Hartwell. How he starts immediately after being cleared is beyond me. Why not move him into the lineup slowly?

I also think M. Jackson should have made the roster earlier and be used on short yardage situation/red zone. He would have filled Duckett’s role and kept Knapp from trying his weak play action from the 2 yard line leading to sacks.

Oh, but Jim Mora had NOTEBOOKS!
And what was in those famed notebooks, by the way? Could they be naked pictures of Rich McKay? Or incriminating evidence against Arthur Blank for selling building supplies from the Depot to Saddam a la George Bluth?
Because I guarantee all of you, that those notebooks are absolutely worth nothing, and I mean nothing (much like a Carter Strickland column, or Carter Strickland himself, they are worthless), if he actually uses them to coach. Because if those notebooks are his guide, then they should be burned!!!

When LEHR comes back maybe they can give him a job washing jockstraps or scrubbing toilets, because he damn well better not end up back in the starting lineup. If Mora puts that overmatched steroid loser back in the lineup then he needs to be terminated immediately. If mora continues to support players such as webster and lehr then he will bury himself anyway. I just don’t understand these damn people, we sit here and watch webster get toasted week after week while we have a 6-2 215 pound fast and physical DB sit on the sideline. I’m not saying williams will come in and play at pro bowl level but can’t we at least see what the guy can do? He can’t be any worse than the worse DB in the league, right?

Just to think, it was those notebooks which made Artie decide to hire this petulant spoiled brat instead of the classy and tough as nails Lovie Smith.
The AJC should demand to see those notebooks and reveal what’s inside them to make Artie make such a horrible decision!

BirDdawg, I have to disagree with you about the notebooks being absolutely worthless. If you were on a long camping trip and ran out of toilet paper they would serve as a decent substitute for wiping your a*.

BIRDDAWG I CAN’T SAY NO BETTER THAN HOW LAID IT OUT THERE! IT IS REALLY TIME FOR MORA TO GO, ESPECIALLY IF HE CAN’T REALIZE THE WEBSTER JUST CAN’T BE A # 2 CORNER IN THE NFL!

WOW, GOOD TO SEE M.JACKSON FINALLY WILL GET SOME PLAY TIME. LONG OVERDUE, AND CAN ANYBODY TELL ME SINCE WHEN DO YOU RUN BACKWARD ON RETURN PUNTS
ALLEN ROSSUSM, FALL FORWARD OR RUN OUT OF BOUNDS, SINCE THE STEELERS GAME, NO YARDAGE MAN COME ON
AND DEFINITELY AGREE MORA NEEDS TO EXCEPT RESPONSIBILITIES, AND STOP THINKING EVERY THING IS SO FUNNY, WITH FAKE SMILES.
I LIKE MORA BUT APPEARS TO BE TO SOFT, NOT FIRM ENOUGH TO MAKE HARD DECISIONS.

It is always unfortunate to see any player lost for the season due to injury. The burning question in my mind is, why was Forney in there in the first place? That was a terrible decision by Mora! The man was out there trying to block 300+ lb. defensive linemen with ONE ARM!!! Why, for Gods sake did Mora take such a ridiculous chance with that man’s career? Clabo has been more than holding his own, so why the urgency to get Forney back in there. Up until this point, most of my fury has been directed at Knapp and Donatell, but now I have to wonder about the ability of Mora to make sound decisions. And shouldn’t sound decisions be a coach’s strength?

Steve, two things I wanted to ask - first of all, i still dont know why we have 4 TEs on the roster - how do we use them and why not place one of them on the practice squad and bring someone else on the active roster to deal with current injuries. and secondly, it seeems like we have capable linebackers sitting on the bench (D. Williams) when Hartwell is playing and many injuries on the D line … how about switching to a 3-4 defense until the D line gets healthy is that too hard to incorporate?

Yeah, I pretty much agree with everything BirdDawg said, but I think the coordinators deserve even more of the blame than Mora. As bad as Mora is, the atrocious playcalling by the coordinators is probably the #1 reason for the Falcons’ struggles last week.

the post at 5:31pm is what I have been asking the last few weeks.. that is never brought up on this board.Rod Coleman has been a non factor, even prior to the turf toe. That is the main reason imo that our pass rush is not what we expected
Hopefully he will turn it up. When he dominates our D plays to a much higher level

Why does it take injuries or suspensions to realize that we need to use our 2nd string players? These guys are long overdue to get involve with the game. Marlon,we are glad to see you. Norwood, get well soon. Williams its long overdue. Matt Lehr, please take another 4 weeks off without pay. Mora, wake up and smell the coffee. The season is halfway over. Get it together, NOW!

I think this team’s success will be determined by the amount of time that Kerney, Abraham, Coleman and Jackson play together. So far I don’t think we have gotten a full quarter of football of them together.
On the other hand, this is the most critical time of the year. Injuries are hitting us, and I think that character of back ups and the will of the players will make the difference.

The injuries are really depressing, and now we have potentially more this week with Lelie, Crumpler and Norwood all in question.
The Falcons will never be able to put it all together. Why should we believe Cleveland isn’t going to light up the scoreboard? As it stands, this defense is right up there with Falcon defenses from the mid/late 80s…and the offense is teetering on going into the tank.
Ok Jim Mora Jr…you need to try another line other than “it’s not time to push the panic button.” I’M SICK OF THAT SH!T!
