Some secondary challenges
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Members of the Falcons’ secondary were upset over the group’s overall performance against the Steelers last Sunday and swore there won’t be a repeat performance this week at Cincinnati.
Well, the Bengals wide receiving corps is arguably better than Pittsburgh’s, especially since coach Marvin Lewis said today that problematic wideout Chris Henry, suspended the past two games (substance abuse and conduct code violations) after being deemed inactive for another, will play against the Falcons.
That poses some big-time matchup problems, especially because Henry is the outside receiver in nickel coverages and will be paired against a much smaller Jason Webster in three-receiver sets.
Free safety Chris Crocker is going to have to be far more aware than he was against the Steelers and strong safety Lawyer Milloy is going to have to keep an eye on tight end Reggie Kelly. With the Falcons expected to blitz a lot, the defensive backs will be in a decent amount of man coverage and can’t afford a lapse.
Cornerback DeAngelo Hall has been about as locked in as I’ve ever seen him. He is very displeased with how he played against the Steelers, plus, he is very eager to get the best of Cincy’s Chad Johnson, who said he’s shave his blonde Mohawk of Hall bested him and the Falcons won.

With the Veteran secondary core that the Falcons have I really do beleive that they won’t repeat the performance that they had this past Sunday. Chad Johnson better watch out for Chris Crocker instead of D.Hall because that hit that Bryan Russell from Cleveland put on him is not even going to compare to what Chris Crocker is going to put on him on Sunday. D.Hall may not even cover him for a half because I predict Crocker bringing the KNOCK KNOCK to the door and taking out BAD CHAD for the rest of the game. HOLLA! SUPER BOWL SHAWTY!

What we need to go, is get Webster to stop playing so soft. He gives every receiver a 10 yd cushion redardless of the situation or yardage needed. I’ve seen him be back 10-15 yards on like a 3rd and 4, and they do a quick out and pick it up because he is too scared to challenge the receivers. Even when we blitz he’s so far back his receiver immediately is the open guy or hot route. Where is Jimmy Williams? Don’t get me wrong, webster is a good “contain” guy, ( i guess someone values that) but D.Hall has one side locked down and the Webster’s side is just free yardage!

D-Hall didn’t have nothing locked down against the likes of Hines Ward … do you think he has a chance against CJ … don’t even think it! He’ll be “hurt” by the 2nd quarter and out of the game. He don’t like the smell of “fried butt”.

Don’t bet on D-Boy … he’s cooked already! Hines is his WARDen! Burnt him every time last week. Even kicked off one shoe and still beat him for a TD.

Who’s gonna help in the HALLway? It’s been open to all who want to score … just go down the HALLway to the end zone.

we are going to have to tighten up coverage or we will get toasted leaving so much of the middle opened. you see, when you play 30 yards off the ball because you are scared to get burnt deep, then actually the QB has more of the field to throw to. if we would tighten up and come to about 20 yards off the ball and just sense them on a go route and hope the ball is thrown perfect you will have a better chance to cover than if you were 30 yrds off the ball. when is the last time you saw a falcon just lay the wood to a WR. not in a long time because we are so far off the ball that there is nobody around a WR when he catches it. we are hardly ever even there at the same time the ball gets there. Webster is awful. A QB could say set hike and throw it to webs side for ten yds every play. Keith brooking looks horrible and slow. He needs to let D-MO play. Did you see the play when Pitt was at our 18 yd line ( 2nd Quarter) and we were in man coverage, well they had I think 3 WR and I saw Brooking step back to about the 12 and there were no RB coming out on routes. He just stood there instead of saying “hey, you know what, we are in man everbody is in the endzone and there is no one here for me to cover, I will back up and stand at the goal line” Any way the ball whizzed right by his shoulder for a TD. Now if he was back even 5 more yards that would have been a pick or at least it would not have been thrown. Everybody else on that play was covered. He sucks now!!

The secondary problems are obvious, especially with Webster giving receivers too much room as noted earlier by another poster. on the other hand, the falcons had a tough time putting pressure on the qb last sunday even when sending 5 guys in the rush. (there were a couple exceptions, including one huge one) I’m kinda surprised rarely try to send one of the guys from the corner, especially when they are in the nickel package. it is a real shame Abraham is out and Coleman is troubled by a sore toe.

What I predict that the Falcons is going too beat the Bengals, and do it easily! The Bengals think that they have a win already! They think it’s going to be their comming out party. And run the Falcons out of their stadium. What you’re going too is a balance team! That they’re really not prepared for! The defense & offense is going too show up for this one. Because everyone again got us losing this one!

Doesn’t Kevin Mathis still play for this team? Why does he not get a chance to start at corner over Jason Websterrible? Is it really that important to keep him on the bench because he’s the backup safety? I really find it hard to believe that Mathis wouldn’t be a better cover corner than Webster.

Hey Mora, I understand the Loyalty to Webster. But when Loyalty turns to Blindness, both parties die (I stole that from DesCartes - UGA fans don’t even try to understand). You AND Jason may be looking for a team……

By neccesity Chris has had to “cheat” towards the WR that is locked up with Webster. The opp is completing over 50% of the passes thrown Jason’s way because he can’t cover in man1.
The Bengals are going to put CJ in motion to make DHall cover all the way across the formation. You can’t put Jimmy W. in because he doesn’t know the coverage scheme well enough. Va.Tech doesn’t coach guys “up” like say a Fl.State or Georgia.
Bengals OL has been horrible as has their rush defense. Tough, tough team to play on the road. CPalm isn’t evading the rush anymore so they have to get to him and hit him.
I didn’t think that the Falcons could play as they did against the Steelers. Say what you will but at the end of Qtr. 3 the Falcons had less than 100 yards rushing. They finished with 173 and didn’t give the Steelers a chance in OT. That was impressive.
This is another game where our coaching staff has to step up. I don’t have a lot of faith that Knapp will keep a good thing going and mix it up.

Dawgs N Birds, Dawgs N Terds, whatever. Just because Brooking doesn’t look like you, are talk like you, you want D Williams to start in front of him. The man goes to the pro-bowl every year, yet, because he doesn’t act like a thug after every tackle, he gets no respect. He helps win games. Is there really another reason why you want someone else to start? Say what you really mean.
It’s ridiculous isn’t it.

“What” is a nut!!!!
Brooking is slow,a non-playmaker,and people are now beginning not to look at his stats (tackles he make 10-20 yards down the field, ala J-Webb),they are believing and seeing just what Bryan Cox said that he should have not backed away from..”Brooking is a non-factor”…
He,J-Webb,Donatell,and Knapp all should be placed not under a bus, but,on a bus with the 1st ticket out of here..
Hell,i’ll drive them or give them Marta Fare to get off at Garnett Marta Station, and get their behinds on Greyhound and Go!!!
Go Falcons!!! and, Go Greyhound!!!
And as for “What”..Just go!!!!!

Webster plays too far off his man, even when we blitz. That negates the very idea of a blitz to just give the hot receiver uncontested passes befor the other teammates have a chance to do their jobs.
He can’t keep letting the other guys down, I hope.

I got an idea, lets bench Brooking,D-Hall,Hartwell & Coleman, lets put D williams and Boley at D end .lets put Patrick Kerney at MLB ..lets just play J Williams in at CB b/c even though he has never started a NFL game before, we all know he is going to be much better than anybody else..
lets start Schuab b/c even though are 4-2 our offense is not perfect every single time we have the ball like every other NFL teams offense..also we all no that when Vick runs for a first downs that doesn’t count as much as when he passes for one, he is not fooling anyone ..
hey lets trade Brooking for Sam Cowart b/c Brook is now the slowest linebacker in the league.
next years lets trade D-hall to the Skins for Duckett back and a 7th round pick, that would be a steal for D-hall b/c even though he has 10 int in his last 21 games he just has to be the worst cover corner in the league right now, its not even right how terrible he is playing..I mean I think 4 rec have had 100 yards or more on him in the last 2 years? are you kidding me? what a joke
P.S. most posters that truly follow the Birds LTAO at the majority of the crap that posted on this board

Amen to that Parks. Why don’t we all just relax and let the coaches do what they are paid to do. If they fail at their tasks, Mr. Blank will have some decisions to make at the end of the season. The last thing we want to do at this point of the season is to start making drastic changes. From my perspective, the only changes that need to be made are in the schemes that we employ. I will say that I am not a big Webster fan, but he has gotten most of the reps with the starting unit and is the most prepared to play. On another subject, I was really impressed with Clabo last week. I couldn’t believe the time that Mike had to throw the ball. And when King came in for Forney, we didn’t miss a beat in pass protection. Impressive indeed.

Well enough silliness by Ol’birdy in his last post.
The issue is not that Brooking has not been a great player for Falcons. He has been and can still perform a role. The point is there comes a time in one’s career, that a player loses the edge. People who have followed the Falcons for past couple years see that in Brooking, and they see how D Williams has performed. You have to let D Williams play. If E Hartwell can stay healthy, you bring D Williams in, and have Brooking as backup. Have him in a role similar to Ike Reese. Brooking should retire with Falcons, and may be a candidate for the RING. But his time has passed. D Williams will ask for a trade otehrwise.
If Mora is indeed a defensive coach, a la Lovey Smith, it is time he shows his colors. If Webster continues to get burned, you have to let the rookie play a few downs a game. No the rook is not ready. Sorry, V Tech is not SEC when it comes to defenses. But in time, any one who has seen the rookie, will admit, he will be another lockdown cornerbacks.
For those shortsighted people who think D Hall let too much yardage last week, until you have someone who can carry minimum their weight, D Hall has to do what he has to do to watch out for Webster. Mora, for this year, play Webster and the rookie. For next year, Webster is out.
And let D Williams play. Brooking is the man, but his time has passed.

What i can’t figure out is why Mora, with his job on the line, continues to play certain players out of loyalty. Webster is smnallish and cannot cover big guys. he also has a broken foot. Why DOES’NT Jimmy Williams get a shot? It can only be one two things: either he is blindly loyal to Webster, or he doen’t trust Williams to play. Given the fact that Webster was horrible last week, Mora needs to wake up and try Williams. As for Brooking, he may not be at his peak, but he has a lot of knowledge and is still a good player. That said, it is time to let D. Williams play more. Also, aside from the hit on R’berger and a couple of other occasions, the Falcons didn’t put nearly enough pressure on the QB. They have this week, or Palmer will pass for 400 yards.

I think we all agree that Webster is the weakest link ib the secondary. But if we throw the rookie in there, will that improve the weak link, or would we be substituting one weak link for another. I agree that eventually Williams will start opposite D. Hall, but obviously the coaches do not feel that now is the time to make that change. As has been pointed out by previous posters, Va. Tech isn’t known for developing NFL caliber defensive players. It appears that the rookie still has some development issues. When teams start to make changes just for the sake of making changes, it usually doesn’t work out very well.

I am the #1 Falcons fan. I love everybody who wears the Red and Black on Sundays. But reality is what it is.
J-Web has a broken foot, and there’s no way that the rookie could be worse than a cornerback with a broken foot. Webster knows what he needs to do but he is physically incapable of doing it right now. Let him get healthy for a few weeks, and get the rook some playing time now before we really need him playoff time.
Brookings is probably the smartest dfensive player we have. If you really watch him, he always seems to know where the ball is going to be. That’s part of what made him a Pro Bowl player. The other part was his speed and expolsiveness to the ball. It may be wear and tear (has he ever missed a game?) but he seems to have lost a step. He covers up for it well, but it adds up to him making takles five yards later than he used to. Maybe Demorrio shouldn’t be starting yet, but what’s wrong with platooning linebackers like we do the defensive line. Nothing like fresh legs, especially at the Outside linebacker.
Big Props to the Offensive line. I guess they got tired of people talking about them and they stepped up big time. Keep giving Mike that kind of time and we cannot be beat. 170 on the ground against Pittsburg is outstanding and the O-line deserves credit for that too.
Let’s put it on Sissy-natti this week and show all those professional prognosticators what the deal is down here in the dirty south!

Flafalcon feeling good about the Falcon’s. Lets put some presure on Palmer and tigthen up the coverage on defense. I’ve been watching the NFL game of the week on the NFL network Into The Fire and have to say Vick looked great. When they roll the pocket out he is lethal. If he goes to Ashley Lelie like he tried to go to R White it will keep things moving Ashley will go after the ball. If we can win this week i will have a lot more confidence, that we are for real. Good call using backs as safty valves.Vick and Knapp seem to have saw the light at same time, I suspect they had a talk after HBO interview.Whatever happened goody!ya!rah! maybe last week was more than an aberration. Norwood could start if needed he is first round material is any back faster than him? Our coaches seem to perform better under pressure. They must know they must change and work to get better. They have the player to go all the way. The question are the coaches capable of doing the same they ask the player to do perform . Are the Atlanta Falcons coaches ready to be the leaders in the league or followers case in point New England coaches the best in the business bar none now that a standard!
