Putting on the blitz
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Falcons resumed practice Wednesday with few people speaking about losing defensive end John Abraham for the next month after lower abdominal surgery. The lack of conversation about the three-time Pro Bowler seemed to stem from the fact that he only has played in parts of two games and that they have gotten used to Chauncey Davis and the rotation that includes Josh Mallard and Paul Carrington.
Coach Jim Mora said Wednesday that the team will probably continue to blitz a lot more without Abraham to generate pressure. At least 5 players will be rushing most of the time, he said, with sprinklings of packages where 6 or 7 defenders are getting after the quarterback. Linebacker Michael Boley added that he’s probably going to line up at rush end between 10-15 times a game to help put rusher on the passer.

I love seeing Boley at end. Is he an athletic specimen or what? The guy could play at all 3 levels on any defense in the league!!

So Boley has been considered to play safety, his line backer position and now at rush end to help out. McKay gets an A+ for that late round draft pick!

That’s what I’m talkin about. More pressure on the quarterback. It was amazing to see the difference pressure makes in the Pitt game. I say, when Ab gets back….let’s keep the blitz going; makes it just that more effective.

Bring whatever is needed to shorten the play. And let’s find another kid somewhere to take Webster’s place. The guy is gonna get some coach(es) canned if he keeps giving up every 3rd down conversion. He really should be a bit embarrassed to always fail to pull his weight out there.
I hope he learns to anticipate the timing of routes and the Dline rush.

Steve,
Ask Mora if former players for a team are taken into account when playing a team. I keep seeing visions of Reggie Kelley scoring a TD in the ‘Nati on Sunday doing the ‘Dirty Bird’.

Finally the Falcons Coaching staff is seeing that blitzing more will help the team out in coverage and cause the team to make more mistakes, I think that this week our defense will catch up with our offense we will be a complete team. Vick keep doing what your doing and win games, whether it is passog for 300 yards or running for 200 yards as long as we win the game i’m alright. GO FALCONS! SUPER BOWL HERE WE COME!

The D-line and safeties need to get pressure on the quarterback so he can’t feast on the coverage by Deangelo Hall, the most over-rated, big-mouthed player on the team.
I’m sick of hearing how great he is, then watching on Sundays as he gambles on int’s, getting drummed in the process, and tackling like a girl.
His only interest is padding his int stats and scoring touchdowns. Either he guesses right, and get his chance at a pick, or the receiver makes him look stupid. How many passes does he actually break up?
His tackling techniques are limited to (a) grabbing for the shoulders, or (b) attempting a rolling block. Period. You won’t see him man-up on a tackle. In fact, if the runner is engaged by another Falcon, he’ll back off instead of helping out.
There. I feel much better.

What’s the deal with Jimmy Williams – He must really be struggling, or Coaches must be afraid to use him. Jason Webster has a stress fracture, and has been highly unsuccessful. Something must be up with Williams for them not to make a change, or maybe they just don’t like change. I guess with Webster, you know what you are going to get.

I think that Boley can do the job no problem, good move. Whatever it takes to keep the ball out of the secondary. I agree that D.Hall is more mouth and V.T. attitude than a reliable DB. Afterall he does wear # 21 for his idle D.Sanders. At least Sanders could intercept the ball, tackling was just an after thought.

Anybody mention Dunn’s request to get the ball passed to him more then in the early part of the game vick rifles a short bullet to him that he promptly drops. vick’s receivers require better than average hands and you gotta be ready ( a la Crumpler)

Guess you didn’t notice how much time D-Hall spent running two-three yards behind Hines Ward last Sunday.
Put down the Kool-Aid, and keep your eye on him this week.

Deangelo Hall leads the league in interceptions at this moment. What do you want from him? He constantly covers the other teams best receiver man up, and then also leads the league in interceptions. He shuts down half of the field by himself. Every corner is going to give up some plays. I think he’s a little mouthy, but as long as you back it up then so be it. Also it’s “idol” not “idle”.

yes Ward made a big play also Mora spec stated that was the safety’s fault.. NAB don’t get me wrong b/c of the new rules don’t think it is possible to be a Shutdown corner all the time…What about the 95% of the time that he does shut down the prim rec.
by your logic b/c Champ got abused by Chad Johnson on MNF last year he is overrated to right?

The lax cover prevent defense never works. You don’t give up a 60 yard pass using it but the field is wide open from the 5 yard line up to about 15 yards on every play for opposing receivers. The receivers need jamming at the line by the DB’s and combined with a good pass rush then the QB can’t make a play. D.Hall is a Pro-Bowler so he must be pretty good to his peers. I repeat, get Norwood the ball (carries or screens, whatever). He’s explosive !

Ladies and Gentlemen we are going to have ourselves one heck of a game this week. I expect D. Hall (given the comments by chad johnson recently) to further assert himself as an elite DB and the heir to the throne from Mr. PT. “IF” MV can prove that he is ready to step up to the challenge weekly and not just when he wants too we might just be making ourselves ready for a deep playoff push. Sorry to hear about Abe but I think the D will be able to hold the ship until he is “healthy”. M. Boley is a beast. I look for him to get after Mr. Palmer with reckless abandon this week. Look for him to have a big game as usual. Well sportsfans, The jizzle has spoken. Until next time.

Good to hear Lelie ia gonna start,he should for the rest of the season. To bad Finneran got hurt, with him we’d have 3 great wideouts. I’m very down on Roddy White,he talks about making big plays and never delivers.
As for the D,some blitz packages to catch the Bengals off guard will help and leaving Davis at end until Abe is back is the better choice.Carrington/Mallard get no pressure, just let Davis take the majority of snaps at end.
And I hope Hall just keeps quiet until after the game.Usually those who talk smack before a game are the ones eating the crow afterward. After Hall is done with Chad,he should mail him in a ziploc bag his blonde mohawk, after all it will be with it’s rightful owner.

It’s hard to say who is getting beat when the d plays the soft zone. The soft zone coverage absolutely sucks - 15 to 20 yards off the line. Donatel has got to do a better job of scheming. It did look like there were quite a few blown coverages in the game. It looked like Hartwell was in the wrong place on one touchdown and Mora said that the safeties didn’t provide support on a couple of other passes.

As much as I love D.Hall, he’s no Champ Bailey. Champ has been to six consecutive pro bowls, the only time he didn’t go was his rookie year when he should have went with 5 ints that year leading all rookies. Champ is the best in the league and when his career is over he will be the best ever. Yes I said it the best ever, maybe i’m bias because i’m a Georgia boy and Champ is a Georgia boy but in his career he’s shut down Marvin Harrison, Randy Moss, Michael Irvin, Jerry Rice, Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce, Terrell Owens, Tim Brown, Santana Moss, Lavernous Coles, Eric Moulds, Andre Johnson, Plaxico Burress, Hines Ward, and Jerry Porter. When I meen shut down I meen hold those receivers under 100 yards and no touchdown catches in a game at the same time and Champ has done that. Until D.Hall does that he will never be on Champ’s level.

Hey “not-a-blogger”, you should rename yourself “don’t-know-much-at-all”, because if you claim DeAngelo Hall is overrated, that puts you in the minority. Everyone who knows anything about football, including great DB’s like Deion Sanders say this kid is the best thing around. In short, you’re an idiot.

Hey “not-a-blogger”, the reason for soft coverage against Pittsburgh, was because Falcons defense over-committed on stopping the run. Seriously, you know nothing about football. Get lost.

Hey Madden King, D-Hall is still young, he too will be to 6 Pro Bowls when he’s been around that long. D-Hall has shut down many receivers. I recall last year on MNF, he single-handedly shutdown T.O. D-Hall is right up there w/ Champ, no doubt about it.

DeAngelo Hall is not overrated. Cornerback is a position where even the elite players are gonna get burned every now and then, because as a cornerback every move you make is a reaction. With the way offenses spend so much time these days perfecting the timing on their routes, it’s almost impossible to shut down an elite receiver for an entire game. Hall didn’t have a great game against Pittsburgh, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s one of the best corners in the league, along with Chris McAlister, Ronde Barber and Champ Bailey.
If Michael Boley doesn’t make the Pro Bowl this year something’s screwed up in the voting system. But as good as he may be, we would be foolish to not mix in blitzes against Cincinnati. Cincinnati has a talented offensive line which has been struggling this year, but if we keep rushing 4 against them it will play right into their hands. Without Abraham we better be more aggressive and mix in some blitzes. More blitzing against Pittsburgh might have saved the game from going into overtime.
Carson Palmer’s the kind of QB who is gonna destroy our secondary if he gets time in the pocket. If we don’t put pressure on him the entire game we might as well gift-wrap the victory and hand it over to them.

Mr.Boley don’t get use to the linebacker position, cause you will be our new defensive-end, starting next year. John Abraham’s football career is getting shorter each year with this nagging injury that’s haunted him since 2000!! Mr.Boley, you will be our Julius Peppers, as you manifest your skills each season!! Watch!!!

Im not sure why people hate on D. Hall. Can you guys name 5 better corners? I can’t.
The man is a player and has only been in the league 3 years. Hes a Hall of Fame talent no doubt.
Its kinda crazy to see so called “FALCON FANS” taking shots at their own PRO BOWL players. This has to be the only city that does this. I wonder if Denver fans take shots at Champ Bailey when he has a bad game?
If you guys would cheer in the stands and come to the game 30 minutes before kickouff or not sell your tickets to the opponents then maybe the players will be more pumped up and cause more opponents mistakes.

d. hall can play db for me anytime. you got so many guys in the league that gets the big check, and does nothing. if the defensive coach would stop all that zone coverage mess, the db’s would play better period. with all the pass rushers and talented defensive lineman we have, we should be in the top three as far as defense goes in the nfl,but as long as we play that i am going to let you catch it coverage we will always give up big passing yards. if mckay is so good tell hin to tell that SCRUB of an defensive coach to stop coaching like he is in Green Bay. remember when we played them in their house we whipped them playing that style of PASS COVERAGE! PLEASE CAN SOMEONE UNDERSTAND WHERE I AM COMING FROM! WE HAVE TALENTED PLAYERS,NOW GET A COACH WHO CAN COACH THEM. BRING IN JERRY GLANVILLE. ATLEAST WHEN HE COACHED OUR TEAM. WE HAD ONE OF THE BEST SECONDARY TEAMS IN THE NFL PERIOD! REMEMBER SCOOT CASE,BRIAN JORDAN, MICHEAL HAYNES,AND PRIME TIME!

Pressure on Plamer should come mostly from the d line,he is too good for a lot of stunting leaving those dangerous receivers open.Mixing it up at opportune times can be used to take them out of their comfort zone.I like the birds chances in this one.

I wonder if Knapp understands just how much talent he has at his disposal. With the many weapons that the Falcons possess, an OC with any type of imagination would be foaming at the mouth to get the game plan together each and every week. Under great pressure from players, fans and media alike, Knapp comes with a more aggressive game plan. Why did it have to come to that? Will he continue to open up the passing game, or will he revert back to his old ways? We will see.

The FALCONS have to come out and establish the passing game. If Vick and company can show that they can and will use the passing game early, the running game would be that much greater. So I say pass, pass and pass! We need to have another great passing game. Oh, did I mention that we need to pass the football. Other teams think that the FALCONS can’t pass. But we know better. So Vick, Pass the ball as much as you want. I’ve already talked with Knapp, he said it’s okay to PASS the football. When you pass the football, you can score a lot of points. Then you let your defense play defense. Oh, did I mention that we need to pass the football.

First defensive play of the game by D.Hall should be driving C.Johnson into the turf. I would be all over C.Johnson all game if he said that junk about me. He would eat those words. If Johnson can’t get off blocks then he can’t run routes and catch passes.

I wonder why when inside the 5 yard line the Falcons don’t setup to run with Dunn to the left and let Vick fake the hand-off and do a boot-leg keeper to the right side for a TD ? I think it could easily work. Then you could let Vick keep to the left side behind Dunn the next time inside the 5 to shake things up.

What about the run? I mean, I understand that Cincy isn’t very good at the run. They average about 127 yards per game and they have 7 rushing TDs on them already. Meanwhile, their Pass defense is pretty good.
In short, I think we should run the ball all over them Sunday. And we should blitz them because their pass blocking is suspect.
I simply do not think they match up well with us.

There have been a bunch of runs by Dunn up the middle inside the 5 that get stuffed. On all those plays a bootleg run by Vick was wide open. The defenses know to stack the middle for the RB handoffs. So you do something different. You could even use Crumpler as a decoy on the same side (right) with everyone else moving left. Then he could pass it to Crumpler or run it depending on what the coverage is.

It’s about dang time! For awhile we were the only team that didn’t blitz! How stupid. Some Genius(not saying any names), had the bright idea that our D-Line is “so good” we only need 4 people rusihng the QB. Dumb! You are going against Pro QB’s, all they need is time, regardless of coverage. If a QB has time he will pick you a part. Blitzing is imperative! I hate seeing people blitz the hell out of Vick and then we get on D and drop back in the softest, most non-pressure zone created. Lets start treating teams like they treat us! They injure Vick every year blitzing, lets blitz them; you see what happens, look at Big Ben!
