Hartwell back; D. Williams demoted

There were two personnel changes made by the Falcons Wednesday, one forced; the other a move that reduces the role of a key defender so medically rehabilitated middle linebacker Ed Hartwell could be inserted into the starting lineup.

The insertion of Hartwell, who has not played this season after having both knees arthroscopically repaired, comes at the expense of outside linebacker Demorrio Williams, who has been relegated to nickel packages and special teams. Williams was demoted because Keith Brooking, who was moved back to his familiar position of weakside outside linebacker. Brooking, who played well in the middle, said he is much better suited to play on the weakside and looks forward to playing the position because he has more space in which to operate.

Hartwell, meanwhile, said his return comes at an optimum time. Since he spent most of his career in Baltimore, Hartwell said he is familiar with Pittsburgh’s style and is looking forward to getting back on the field against an opponent that will run more at him than away from him.

Offensively, the Falcons will replace Matt Lehr — suspended four games for violating the NFL’s steroid policy — with Tyson Clabo, a practice squad player who is now being thrown into the fire. Coach Jim Mora, quarterback Michael Vick and offensive tackle Wayne Gandy said Clabo should be able to fill in well, unless he gets stage fright in his debut. Gandy said the Falcons’ blocking scheme is predicated on assignments, not physical dominance, which should also help Clabo.

In regards to Lehr, no player openly expressed him letting the team down and all said they would be supportive.

That’s fine about Lehr…it’s not as if he expressed letting the team down all season for his poor play. Until Clyde from the Hawks blog comes with this t-shirt idea guess I might as well start it….

No Lelie for Roddy promotion? Do the coaches have a clue when it comes to how to fix the passing game?

geeeeeeeeez…i’m sure a factor in leaving roddy as a starter has something to do with the falcons brass not wanting to kill his confidence.. but yes pleeeeease put lelie in there… my hope is roddy starts plays the first series and then get his butt on the bench…….

Stever,

Were there any comments as to why the defense rarely utilizes the blitz?

How much longer are we going to let QB’s sit in the pocket while we play that “soft zone” crap?

yes, Lelie should start, obviously. The problem, though, isn’t really as much with the recievers as Vick. Does anyone notice how long it takes him to go through progressions? Every other pass is off-target. The solution is simple- let Matt Schaub, who CAN run the offense, play. But no, that’d be unpopular, and we can’t have that.. Watching Vick run is like watching a fifty-year-old do her old cheerleading routine. It just isn’t cute anymore.

Falcons dropped 5 spots in the “Ranks”, but have been 1st in Offense. Dunn runs like a champ. They have the best Defense (on paper) in the NFL, but THE PASSING GAME DOES NOT EXIST. All the sports magazines, tv analysis, commentators, writers, fans, recognize it, but the FALCON COACHES don’t. Somebody that has access to their ears, please tell them this is the NFL, not college or high school. You have to be able to pass the ball to win.

Ya’ konw! It’s pretty damn tired some when you come to the blogs too try too enjoy the true fans of the team and their views. You always got some stupid fool! Always want too start up that Schuab sh%&! Who don’t seem to have clue. Everybody know that the offensive line, Reciever’s, & playcalling, is the problem. From all the people from fans, radio, too TV! Now here comes dumb a$$ Vikingsouth! Man! you obiviously don’t get it! Schuab is not better, than Vick so when he goes too another team you and with all this cheerleading racially motivated antics, go right along with him! Clown!

Now can someone please why Lelie isn’t starting in front of White? And why is the leading tackler on the team is being demoted? Fans please pay close attention to the play of Brooking, at his so call natural prosition. We’re in trouble! Team are really going gash, and attack us now! Also! Jimmy Williams, should start in front of Webster. It’s time for the experiment of these players too end because it’s just isn’t working. I say give guys that’s hungry a try and let’s see what happens

Hey guys, take it easy on my son. Don’t forget that he learned from the best! He is starting Roddy over Lelie because he likes the way Roddy moves during practices. Practice is the key to victory afterall. Why do you want him to fire Knapp? Greg and Junior have been friends for years and Greg is bound to make the right moves eventually. Is 5-7 years really that long to wait? It amazes me how fans always want it now. You guys really don’t understand football and how long it takes to add a new play or wrinkle. It’s not like you can just tell a reciever to go long or something. This offense was designed to be a locomotive and will take years/centuries to turn around. Just learn to enjoy the cheerleaders and atmosphere in the Dome and don’t focus on wins and losses. Jimmy tells me that Arthur has been talking to the guys at Time Warner on how he can update the Dome like Turner Field where fans can get engrossed in entertainment activities versus the game itself. After all, winning your division is everything and World Series/Super Bowl trophies are totally overrated.

After watching Lelie’s highlights from last year (every catch), I had hopes the Falcons would sign him long term…

But he will never sign here after getting sandbagged behind inferior competition and not utilized nearly enough, all this while he’s working for less than nothing (net) this year trying to earn a decent contract for next.

Is it Knapp or is it Mora with his head in this particular bucket of sand?

By NFL= Not For Long

October 18, 2006 06:48 PM | Link to this

When the opposing teams, media, and fans see it yet the Falcon coaching staff doesn’t, it spells time for a change. Our offense is and has been plain vanilla for years yet Mora & Knapp still think they are fooling the opposition. Even I can call most of our plays just sitting in the stands or watching on TV. Every time we get a player who can be a difference maker(Duckett, Norwood, Lelie), the coaches mysteriously put them in a glass box not to be opened until Christmas. Is our high powered offensive scheme so difficult to understand it takes years to figure out? If so, it is too complex for its meager output and amazingly every fan has figured it out without ever seeing a playbook. The first two games of the year worked because nobody had seen the NFL option(which the Falcons spent the entire offseason working on). The NFL now knows how to defend it so now we are back to square one. Our 2nd meetings with Carolina and Tampa should produce very different outcomes if the same schemes are used. If the coaching staff can’t figure this out and adapt new changes, they should not be in the NFL. As Bobby Hebert used to say, NFL stands for Not For Long. Blank is showing too much patience with this staff and I’m sure they are blowing some nice smoke his way. If this season ends .500 or worse, even Blank will see through the smoke and heads will roll. I just hate wasting season after season when it is obvious to everyone outside of Flowery Branch where the problems lie.

I think that the coaching staff do not have a clue! I would really like Arthur Blank to put pressure on Mr. Mckay to fire some one a##! ( in reference- head coach) We need some one like a Bill Parcell that will not settle for a sub par performance that were displayed sunday in the Georgia Dome. We got the talent and we need to execute the plan. Looking at that game was like committing suicide!!! talking bout creating an atmosphere that you can put a winning product on the field, Huh!

I REALLY liked the comment from Paul Zimmerman (Dr. Z) on the SI.com website in this week’s power rankings:

Never, never, never (did I mention never?) will I understand how you can keep rushing four, and only four, small people who are gradually getting worn out, cannot possibly apply pressure by themselves and are equally vulnerable to anything that comes their way, by themselves without a single bit of help from, ssshhhh, blitzers. I mean is there some sort of city ordinance against blitzing? Is it considered a terrorist tactic in Atlanta?

Gandy said the Falcons’ blocking scheme is predicated on assignments, not physical dominance, which should also help Clabo.

Mr. Blank,

You were a fan before becoming an NFL owner and I ask for you to put your fan hat back on for a moment. Remember watching the Falcons games and playing armchair quarterback? Remember seeing a loss and saying “why didn’t they do this?”. The Atlanta fans want to win almost as much as you do and we have seen a pattern emerging under Mora & Knapp that is unsettling. Mora says the offense is getting more productive each and every year, but from a fan’s perspective it doesn’t look that way. Stats can be used to prove anything and I fear that Mora is pulling only those that make the team look good. You have been through enough sales/marketing meetings in your day to know what I am talking about. I think Mora has built a team that can defeat weaker opponents but falters against teams with better records. If the goal is to win a Superbowl, I don’t like this recipe. We seem to have the talent on offense to move the ball but Knapp continues calling plays that move backwards almost as often as they move forwards. We have like one redzone touchdown in the last 4 games so it’s not like what he is doing has been successful. If Vick is the versatile superstar that you believe him to be, why not get creative with him and at least allow him to call audibles when he sees as play is doomed before it starts? Why not use Norwood more often to run or catch screen passes as he has shown great promise just in the few plays he has been used? How can Knapp continue using White over Lelie when White drops pass after pass?

Sir, if this offense doesn’t soon show the productivity that you and the coaches have invested 3-4 years in creating, I sense the complaining from fans will revert right back to the high ticket prices and overpriced concessions. I hope the fan side of you shares our concerns.

Thanks for listening.

Michael,

they benched Demorrio because he can’t stop the run. Did you notice that Tiki ran off left tackle the entire second half?

Demorrio had the same problems last year - teams just ran right at him. He has all the speed in the world, but he just isn’t stout against the run.

I’m afraid that Lelie will not resign with the Falcons and I cannot blame him. My bigger concern is why any receiver would ever want to come to Atlanta to play. I also remember a few years back when we played the Steelers and Vick lead us on a great 4th quarter comeback. Now, if we get down by one point, the game is over. Please fire Knapp!

Why is Vick not being demoted? Almost any QB in the league with as much experience as him would be taking a seat after some of the performances I’ve seen. To all you Vick lovers: In what area has Vicks game improved since coming into the league 6 yrs. ago? That shouldn’t be too tough to answer. To all you Schaub haters: If Schaub had been starting the last 3 years and playing like Vick, would you be praising him too? I think that answer is pretty obvious too. If Vick is as smart and great as some of you seem to think, why can’t he learn Knapps offense? Has he ever audibled since he has been here? GO SCHAUB!!!

I just finished watching NFL Live and I was amazed at some of the things I learned. Vick is not allowed to change any plays called by the OC. All NFL teams know the Falcons run 85-90% of the time on 1st & 2nd downs. That’s why DEF’s put 8-9 players in the box, on those downs, because they know Vick can’t audible to a pass play. Another observation was the Falcons usually hold their backs in to block on pass plays. This allows the DEF to rush more players, especially LBs, since the OFF rarely throws to its backs. By spreading the REC’s, and sending the backs down field, in the flat or both, it forces the LBs and DB’s away from the Line. Taking DEF players away from the Line is a lot easier than trying to block them in the backfield. The only options Vick has to make an adjustment is to call a timeout, which he often does, but the DEF changes after the TO and he’s right back where he started. What kind of competent OC or Coach would prevent their franchise QB from changing a play if it wasn’t suitable for the existing DEF set. With all of the talent and experience we’ve acquired, the team is being held back by its weakest link, the coaching staff.

I’m trying very hard to keep my sanity when it comes to my beloved team but demoting Demarrio is just too much. Hartwell is a bust (too many little nicks that keep him out). The trio of Brooking, Boley, and Williams has been outstanding. Why break it up? This is totally crazy!! I can already see the day (and it will be sooner than later, trust me) when Demorrio, Matt, and Warrick are making big plays for other teams. We are heading down the wrong path I’m sad to say. Can you see the “Favre Factor” coming into focus once again?

I have tivo every game the falcons played this year and the year before. I tell you that theirs no-way that Keith Brooking is leading this team in tackles with 45! I said it before, and I’ll say it again. Someone is padding this boy stats, their is no-way in hell that Brooking has this many tackles! The only reason why D. Williams is getting demoted is because of his size! Another reason why I say that the Coaching staff of this team needs to be replaced. I don’t give a damn if he was small as an ant, as long he makes plays, and the most production, & effective! He starts it’s just that simple! It’s the same with the QB or any other player on this team. What give you the best option too win the game? Stats ladies & gentleman does not win games! Prime example look at the Chicago & Arizona game! Winning is the only objective! Not stats!!!!!!!

I lost all faith in Brooking 2 years ago when he was one on one with Michael Pittman of Tampa. Pitman ran out the backfield into the flat and ran pass Brooking and caught a five yard pass and took it to the house and made Brooking look like he was trying to rollerskate on gravel. I dont see him having enough speed to play the outside and that was two years ago when he made the probowl with his Georgia Tech connect. So maybe the Statistician is a GT alumni. The only thing that is keeping Brooking in the lineup.

MICHAEL, I was going to bash that ignorant SOB into outer space, but you did a good enough job to ease my anger. JERRY, I am offering this bit of historical information to you as food for thought. White people, especially poor uneducated ones, picked as much cotton as any other group during the era of king cotton. That could very well include some of your ancestors JERRY. Also, for you information, the Falcons do not allow any of their QB’s to audible or in any way change a play called in by the OC. If a Falcons QB reads a DEF and decides the play needs to be changed, his only option is to call a timeout, which Vicks often does. Otherwise, the QB has to take whatever the DEF has in store. Now JERRY, if race is not an issue, why is Vick the only one singled out as lacking in intelligence when all Falcon QB’s operate under the same restrictions? I/ve said it before and I will say it again. IGNORANCE IS BLISS, BUT ONLY FOR THE IGNORANT.

Roddy White is still starting over Lelie and Jason Webster is still on this team. Can someone pleaser to explain to me why just why. Lelie is the only wr that has showed the willingness to go up and fight for a ball and hold onto the ball. Jason Webster couldnt cover a man with no legs. Jimmy Williams can’t be any worse. He has to be better because honestly it cant be hard to be any better than Webster.

Roddy White is just not a big-time receiver. He has the tools, but he just doesn’t make plays.

We need a true clutch receiver. We need someone who can catch in traffic and make up for any mistakes that Vick makes in throwing. (Vick’s throwing errors is much less this year than in previous years, though.)

But the biggest thing is that we need some shake-ups in the offensive play calling. Last week, the defense was on the field for too long and we had to many three-and-outs. I hope we can mix it up a little.

Now for all of those Vick haters, Vick is testy on his shoulders. Perhaps you can see your favorite son, Matt Schaub, come in the game this week. We will definitely lose if Vick doesn’t play, but Schaub will show great passing ability.

I guess for some it’s not about winning or losing, it’s all about the fact that they want a drop-back passer who’s accurate enough to hit unopen receivers in their shoulders so the ball can bounce up and the defense can get some interceptions.

Or we can get someone who will pass a perfect spiral out of bounds when they scramble for their lives because they don’t have the speed to extend the play beyond 3 seconds.

Or maybe, just maybe these folks want someone who can indeed throw for over 200 yards and we lose because the ground game suffers.

Me? I would rather win with someone who rushes for 100 yards, passes for another 120 yards and can open up passing opportunities in times that goes beyond 3 seconds.

Oh, and I want to WIN. And Mike Vick will win… not conventionally or with his accuracy. But he wins with his legs, his powerful arm and his winning attitude. He’s a winner and Vick’s been winning all his life: High School, College, and the Pros.

Demote D. Williams, you have to be kidding. He is playing too well to be demoted. Why not bring Hartwell of the bench for nickel situations and special teams and keep D. Williams starting. Make Hartwell earn a starting spot. It kills me that someone that is playing as well as he is/has is playing second fittle to someone who needs time to get back in the flow of things.

Also, we should be talking about putting Roddy White on the bench and putting A. Lelie in the starting rotation, he is the only one is catching the ball.

AJC! Please do something about this hatered on your blogs! If you can’t filter the hate that’s displayed here towards Black players! Because that’s mainly what it’s all about, this blogger that goes by the name White boy is proof of that! I know we live in a country that freedom of speech is allowed! But haterd of someone skin just because they play football is different! We going backwards true fans love these blogs! We don’t have too battle racism, nor do we have put up with this kind mess! It’s the best player on the field a play. Not rather he’s white or black! I love your blogs AJC, but when someone call some a monkey, stupid, nappy head, etc… Then as a proud Black Man, Fan, and Proud American, I rather shutdown these Blogs! Because this is just unexceptiable

Micheal, I went back and read and you were the first one on this blog to attack another blogger and I Quote “Ya’ konw! Clown!”

This reeks of racism, so before you try to get AJC to do something about it, maybe you need to clean up your own house.

Plain and simple, whomever is at fault, the passing game has to improve greatly. What happened to the boot-leg? They found this college option thing and replaced the bootleg that was working so well. mix it up some. Maybe it is me and I am blinded by frustration but, are we running any screens?I bet a lot of you all really miss butter-finnerin now. “If” we were to win Sunday and the passing game hasn’t improved then this is going to be just another teaser season.

Jerry, when I made those comments. It was in reference too the best play on the field that gives us the best chances too win! But you and others calling people monkeys, nappy head, thinking that all Black QB’s can’t play because they can’t read defenses because their stupid or dumb etc!!!! Can anyone tell why Black QB’s are critiqued so hard verses Whites? Why can’t he be judge on his skills? Vick under coach Reeves was in the top 15 amoung QB’s in the NFL! Under this Mora & Knapp he’s last! This franchise was a laughing stock of a team before this guy got here! Teams respect the Atlanta Falcons now alittle because of Vick and others! When I made those comments, I talking about this Coaching staff don’t know how the players on this team! And they have some damn good ones! Everyone that are fans of this team know what the problem is, and others get on these blogs to bring their racial views too the blogs! Nothing I said was racial! So know what the hell you’re talking about kid! Just because Vick has a 130 million dollar contract, and is the QB & Face of the team. Does he or anyone else of color has to be call a; “Dumb A$$”, “Nappy Headed”, “Monkey” that can run fast, Whose not worth a 130 million contract! True fans know that Darrio, plays the Weak side linebacker spot better than Brooking. Now please Jerry, tell me why does he deserve to call a monkey! Again that can run fast?

Ok Micheal, I like Micheal Vick. When he first came to Atlanta I thought he would be a great qb and he still has plenty of time to achieve greatness. I really don’t know the solution to the problems that he has with his passing game. With the strong arm he has I guess it has to be a lack of coaching. I don’t understand why he has so much trouble with a timing pattern or throwing to a spot. Maybe it’s because the coaches have not developed the passing game to where it is an asset to the team. If we can’t run, game over. I think one glaring problem Sunday was the absence of Abraham and not putting any pressure on Manning. A quarterback like Manning has to be pressured. When the coaching staff knew Abraham was not going to play the second half they should have came up with some blitz packages to help our ineffective 4 man rush. We couldn’t pressure Manning, they adjusted there defense at half time, stopped Atlanta’s running game…game over. We all need to respect each other. You and I can’t solve all the problems with our society, so lets just start with me and you. I appolligize for my insensative remarks. As far as the Falcons, we all want the same thing, a winner, The Superbowl winner that I have been waiting 41 years for. Have good night.

Apology! Accepted brother, we true fans of this team bleeds red & black! Now don’t get me wrong I’am, my 10 yr old son is a fan of Brooking. But it’s time for change. Keith is getting a little older, I say it’s time for split duty with the youngster & pass the torch gracefully. just like it was when he replaced the “Hammer Tuggle”! I said it on another blog. If and when the fire Knapp, they need to give coach Sherman a call make him Asst. Head/ OC so that Vick want have go through learning a new system. Because Coach Sherman is a great Offensive mind of West Coast Offense! He’ll the most production out these players!
