Shockley impressive as backup
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
This blog doesn’t necessarily deal with Sunday’s game against the New York Giants. Instead, I wanted to talk about a well-known player whose progress is being measured on the practice field.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve seen third-string quarterback D.J. Shockley look very impressive, which is sometimes tough for a backup whose main role is to emulate the visiting team’s quarterback. Shockley, the rookie from Georgia, has embraced his position and gone about sharpening his skills against the No. 1 defense, which happens to be ranked 6th overall in the NFL. In individual drills, Shockley has been very solid throwing the ball and seems to have established pretty good chemistry with the Falcons’ receivers.
I spoke to him for a while this week and Shockley said he is very pleased with the way he has progressed. Most of it, he said, deals with the way he’s been coached by quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave and Greg Knapp. Instead of just using him as a practice player, Shockley is quizzed on the same material, coverages and reads as Michael Vick and Matt Schaub.
Part of Shockley’s progress also stems from the type of player he is, which is a humble one who wants to always get better and do what is right for the team.

Hey Steve,
Can you take Carter’s place on the Bulldog blog? How about taking over writing all headlines related to UGA? I am making a joke of course, though it is nice to read a flattering (justifiably) account about someone who at some point had a connection to UGA’s football program.

This should come as no surprise to anyone who has followed him for the past few years. In due time he will be playing on Sunday afternoons and preforming well. I know Don is very proud, as well he should be.

I hope this is alittle PR before we trade Matt for a 1st round pick. Sounds great about DJ. Do you see the falcons picking anyone up off the wavier wire? Like safty troy v—or an extra d-line man? What are your thoughts?

Maybe in the future Shockley can start at quarterback and Vick can move into Dunn’s position. That way we continue to have a great running game and we have a legitimate passer, too.

That’s a good idea, but to complete a halfback pass, you’d need to put in Norwood.

Heck, yeah. Shockley can do everything Vick can do and something else Vick can’t: play quarterback and not a running back with the option to pass which he executes only half the time and completing only half of those. If we trade Schaub we will one day watch him lead a team to the Super Bowl just like Brett Favre did for the Pack. Trade Vick while we can get something for him. I bet anything we could not even get one first round pick for him.

I’m glad we are getting an update as to how he is progressing on the scout team. We all know Shaub will be traded for picks after this season. Put Matt Schaub at QB immediately. I know I know everyone says , are you nuts ?
Well here is what you do instead.
You put Mike Vick as one halfback and DJ Shockey as the other. You could lateral to someone who was hot , or Mike and DJ could choose to run around some in the opponants backfield.
It seems simple enough

Rather you agree or not DJ Shockey is the real deal. He should have started all 4 season with UGA but Richt chose to go in a different direction. No, he was not a high pick in the draft. Rod Smith, Priest Holmes and Jessie Tuggle didn’t even get drafted but we all know what they brought to the table. I am so happy that Mora got this guy because he is a winner. Trust me on this guys, this guy is going to make a lot of people happy. Here’s the dilemma we have on this team. Michael Vick was Dan Reeves project not Jim Mora. Dan had a plan and he implemented Vick’s ability into that plan and that’s when Vick became a star in the league. I don’t care how good you may think you are, you just won’t make it in the NfL if you are not put in the right system. Mora knows it and smart fans know that Michael Vick is in the wrong system and that’s why he can’t stay consistent periodically in the WCO. They even tried to change the system around to make him comfortable but that will only disrupt the ability that the other players bring to the table. Michael Jordan learn in his early years in the NBA that unless he got the rest of his team involve in the game they couldn’t win a title. This is what I foresee. If Mora had it his way, he would throw DJ Shockey in there and find away to trade Michael Vick because at this juncture DJ Shockley understand the offense more so than Mike. Mora won’t make that public but I believe that it’s in his head. There is more pressure on Mora than people realize.

This Mora guy is not going to get it done. Here’s the new offensive plan folks— DJ as quarterback and Vick as a slit-back and split end. Its either that or mark my word, Mora will be gone this year or next year because he could use Vick anywhere else and the man is blind—-use all of your assets to win!—Urban Myer is a great example of what I am referring to people—win—don’t play politics and lose. Oh yea, in case many did not know, Vick is one of the fastest men in football—-understand that Mr. Mora——get Vick running somewhere somehow. He doesn’t have to be the quarterback in every play. Wake up! I’m done.

These Vick Bashers are such tradtionalists they won’t take a QB that runs the team that is 34-20-1, 2 playoff appearences in 3 years, about to be 3 out of four after this year since 2002. Instead passing stats, completion percentage, and passing touchdowns, are more important. No wonder people outside of Georgia laugh at us because we are F@#$ up in the head when it comes to sports. The famous words of Herm Edwards say “You play to win the game,” and thats what Vick does. You don’t play the game to throw up Dan Marino type stats which is what Falcons fans seem to want more. What these so called fans seem to forget is that since this franchise started in 1966, there has only been 7 playoff teams, 1978, 1980, 1992, 1995, 1998, 2002, and 2004. two of those playoff teams belong to Vick and the rest has been by a different QB. That means this TEAM HAS BEEN LOSERS UNTIL RECENTLY. We don’t have the wining traditon like the Raiders, Steelers, Packers, 49ers, Redskins, Cowboys etc, so Falcons STOP ACTING LIKE WE DO. You all should be praising your lucky stars that the Falcons finally has a QB that wins games and regularly takes us to the playoffs but instead you fans want a QB who is 24-30 336yds 3TDS 2ints and we lose 31-41, yeah you Falcon fans are such Genuises.
P.S. Vick is the all time winningest QB in FRANCHISE HISTORY, is tied with most playoff victories won with 2 and is THE ONLY QUATERBACK IN FRANCHISE HISTORY WITH A WINNING RECORD, the rest of them are LOSERS. Just like on Madden, the MADDEN KING has just won this argument but those white Falcon Fans are still going to bring up passing stats like it’s more important. HOLLA!

If I remember correctly, the New England Patriots drafted a QB in the seventh round, whom has led them to multiple Super Bowl victories. That having been noted, please don’t plead your case to us, that DJ isn’t going to be a highly successful QB in the NFL because he wasn’t drated higher than he was. As it has been noted many times previously on this blog, DJ is a QB playing QB, while MV is a very athletic player , he is not, nor will he ever be a QB. Gary, Vick is a winning quarterback in the National Football League. The fact that you do not approve of his style of play does not change that one little bit. By your logic, any athelete with superior skills can lead an NFL team to a winning record and multiple playoff appearances playing the quarterback position. Do you want to rethink your position, or do you have blinders on?

No thanks, I don’t want to change my thoughts on my observations as you have given me nothing but more of your reasons as to why my opinions are not valid. I will stick to my assessment of the two players in question. As I have repeatedly said “DJ will outVick Mr. Vick” over the course of their respective careers. I am not condemning Mr. Vick’s style of play, instead I am, based on my own personal observations, stating that I believe DJ will have the better career in the NFL. I personally think DJ has better QB skills than Mr. Vick. Sorry if you don’t agree. Mike vick has been in the league 6 or 7 years and still throws off his back foot most of the time. That is why his passes always sail high over the receivers head. Most quarterbacks correct this problem in junior high school but it just want sink into mike’s head. Lets face the fact that this guy is just plain dumb and can’t absorb any coaching whatsoever. He looks no better now throwing the ball than when he was a rookie. Arthur Blank and company keep making excuses about the passing game but the gig is up. there are either some retards posting on here or a whole lot of ignorant high school and junior high school kids. MV7 is not a tailback. MV7 took you to a conference championship game 2 years ago. MV7 has had you in the playoffs in two of the three years he has been a starter and he has won playoff games in two of those three years. I can go on and on and on as i have in past posts about what mike vick has accomplished in his time in the ATL, but I am really tired of preaching to immature little children. Mike Vick is far from perfect but so is peyton manning, dan marino, joe montana, tom brady, and so on and so on. CAN THE AJC PLEASE REMOVE ANYONE WHO POSTS ON HERE THAT MIKE VICK IS MERELY A GLORIFIED RB OR WR? we should delegate a little kids section on the AJC for those type of dimwitted people.
DJ is a great player too. One of my all time favorite college players. BUT you can not say he is better than MV7. You have absolutely no basis for that opinion. MV7 accomplished more than DJ in college and has clearly accomplished more in the pros. MV7 was the first pick overall. DJ was essentially the last pick overall and would most likely not have been drafted if he was not a bulldawg and blank was not looking for some UGA love. Will DJ be great in the NFL? I do not know. BUT i do think he will be a quality starting QB for the next 10 or so years. BUT at this time noone can really sit here and say that he is better than mike vick. that is just plain old ignorant, childish, UGA silliness.

Gary, Do you know what the word “anecdotal” means? Probably not. The fact that Tom Brady (a 6th round pick, not a 7th rounder) has been successful in the NFL proves absolutely nothing. That’s akin to saying that because Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard, any college dropout is destined to be the world’s wealthiest man or woman.
Your arguements are so weak. It’s all based on your “personal observation” WTF is that? You are clearly not a football expert. If you were, you’d at least be able to support your claim with something stronger than personal observations.
DJ didn’t even “outVick” Mr. Greene at Georgia. What’s Mr. Greene doing these days? Holding a friggin’ clipboard!! So there’s my retort to your Tom Brady theory. I love DJ, but you have spent a lot of time over the last few months with your stupid “DJ will out Vick Mr. Vick” nonsense, yet you have not made any credible arguments.

Gentlemen,
Allow me to have the last word on the subject.
The solution to this offense’s passing quandry is simple and straight-forward:
On each play, make certain that the routes of at least two eligible receivers cross paths.
When this starts occuring on a regular basis, we will see an immediate and significant jump in the completion rate, yardage after catch, and passing touchdowns.
This is really all that the most effective offenses today do. And Vick seems vvery well suited for plays in which his receivers routes criss-cross.
When the receivers do not cross paths, they are also easier to defend. Our receivers have NFL-calibre “measurables” — height, speed, jumpngs, catching abilities. Yet when our routes remain within a thin lateral profile (lateral meaning sideline-to-sideline), they, like any other receiver, is much easier to defend.
Let’s unleash these talented receivers. Let them criss-cross each others paths, giving the defenders something to think about and run after.
Remember Dan Reeves proclaimed last year that one of the things Vick really did well, even in 2002, was make the right read and go to the correct receiver in the “bunch” formation. “He knew where to go,” Reeves said.
Check the recent game tapes like the New Orleans Monday nighter and you will see very simple, non-crossing pass routes. A lot of “run straight, then stop.” Is it any wonder the receivers were blanketed?
Then check out the few successful plays in the Arizona game and you will see that on the occasion our receivers routes crossed, they had separation and the passes were completed at a very high percentage (when Matt LEhr wasn’t being blown up).
CROSS THE RECEICERS PATHS FOR NFL PASSING SUCCESS
It is really that simple.

Thanks for the kind words “fool”. It is so enlightening to be verbally assaulted by a pseudo intellectual. As for the Tom Brady situation, I merely pointed out an exception to the stupid assertions, that how you play in the NFL has a direct and binding correlation to what round you were drafted in, as it relates to DJ. Further I have stated, as have others, that it appears to us that DJ has better QB skills than MV,i.e., he throws the ball better(not harder, as I have heard that harder is not always better, but what do I know), he sees the field better, he makes better decisions(adjustments),and finally he is a great team player(doesn’t pout on sidelines when things are not going well).Obviously, you are more intent on impuning my character than exchanging ideas. I have, as have others, made these same points before. Next I guess you will be saying I am evil. While I am loathe to make categorical assumptions about matters of fact (as opposed to speculation or opinion), from your tactics I strongly suspect that you are a Republican. PEACE!!!!!

Evidently you are satisfied in watching the most exciting player in the National Football League who by the time his playing days are over will have never taken his team to the Super Bowl, much less won; and it’s possible it could even be past the first round of the playoffs. But of course you will blame that on the head coach and/or offensive coordinator (no telling who those coaches will be after Mora and Knapp are fired).

Shockley can’t help this team win now, like Vick can when he is playing well. Shockley is, however, a much better passer. Because Mark Richt used Shockley as a run alternative to David Greene for three years, everyone forgot that DJ was brought in because he was a good passer. I admire Shockley and hope he gets a shot somewhere, someday. The guy that pointed out his draft position forgets that he only got one year as a starter. If he would have gotten two years under center at UGA he would have been no less than a second rounder.

Madden King I will answer you. You are right when you say “Vick equals winner” as long as the Falcons are playing a poor run stopping defense. Otherwise “Vick equals loser”. The falcons receivers would not be taking all of this flack if they were playing with many of the Q-backs in the league that don’t throw the ball 100 mph and behind them, in the ground, or over their heads. I’m not even sure Calvin Johnson could make Vick’s throws look good. Believe it or not, I do like Vick. I just wish he were any better throwing the ball then he was 3 years ago. Should the Falcons ever make it to the Super Bowl they will most likely be playing a good run stopping defense. Vick will have to learn how to be more accurate with his throws before “Vick equals Super Bowl.” I personally am beginning to doubt that day will ever come. Hope I’m wrong but learning to face reality.

Vick should sit out the Steelers game and let Matt Schaub have a shot ! We all remember the NE game and by the way, why did we waste a draft pick on Roddy White. This kid cannot catch a cold naked in the winter at 10 below. HE NEED TO GO AND TAKE THE OC ! Please some one catch the BALL !~
