Abraham back at practice

Falcons defensive end John Abraham practiced Wednesday for the first time since injuring his groin in the waning moments of a season-opening victory over Carolina, a game that he dominated.

Abraham, who revealed he has had three operations on his lower abdomen in his career, said he practiced after nearly a month of rehabilitation to provide a brief refresher before practice resumes next week. It’s a sign he plans to play in Atlanta Oct. 15 game against the New York Giants. The Falcons have a bye this week.

Abraham said no real diagnosis was provided about the type of groin injury he suffered. However, after a groin injury forced him to miss nine games in the 2003 season with the New York Jets, Abraham said he proceeded with caution.

If Abraham does return against the Giants — he did not guarantee he would — he would reassume his starting right end job, where he opened the season with two sacks, two forced fumbles and six tackles at Carolina. Patrick Kerney, who is coming off a three-sack game against Arizona, would return to left end.

I’m glad to see him at practice, but I won’t get my hopes up. The Brady Smith injury burned me really bad. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Hopefully Abe is ready to go full speed. We are about to enter the stretch of games that will probably determine if we make the playoffs and what seeding we will have. I would hate for us to have to go to Chicago in January for a playoff game, so these upcoming games are huge. We will need to be at full strength in all three phases of the game. Here’s to a healthy remainder of the season.

It may not be necessary to put Abe back in the line up just yet. Our defense is clicking wonderfully, there’s no need risking his loss again. They should keep him out for as long as possible until the postseason. He can keep practicing to avoid rust.

We already have a top 5 defense without Abraham, once he gets back we will have the best defense in the league because nobody on Chicago’s front four is even close to being in Abraham’s class and they have the best defense in the league right now.

Appreciate the update. It seems odd to me that ‘no real diagnoses was provided to’ him. He had an MRI right? Is this the first we have heard about the 3 surgeries? I knew he had missed alot of games but do not remember hearing about that.

And not being sure he can play in 10 days? Sounds like this trouble still, though I hope not, and at least he is trying to practice again.

He has to play if we’re to beat the Giants. The game is a conference home game. 3-1 in conference, 2-0 at home. Giants can put up a lot of points.

Abe not only has to play, he has to make a difference.

Abe doesn’t have to play. The giants won’t be able to run because of our 1# acquisition this year, whom we’ve given little attention to by the way,Grady Jackson. Eli won’t be able to look off our secondary. If Abe plays, that’s fine, but we don’t need him. Not in this game.

Yeah 3 surgies and some doubt on his part scares me but hopefully he will be back if he was well to practice a little today 10 days from now he should be ready but well see

I believe the coaches will play Abraham cautiously like they did Kerney after his injury. He will likely be used in obvious passing situations until he is at least close to 100%. The Giants are a good team with a balanced OFF and solid DEF. Since there OFF doesn’t standout in any one area, like the Falcons dominate rushing attack, what would make anyone think we would be powerless against them without Abraham? Come on now, let’s stop the negative reactionary thinking. Our DEF can and will contain EManning and the Giants, without Abraham if necessary. The Bengals OFF will challenge our DEF more than Pittsburg or NY. With a healthy DEF the Falcons can win the next 3gms, but 2 of 3 is more realistic. Our DEF is strong enough and talented enough to contain the opposition until our OFF corrects its early season shortcomings. GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!

i agree with the people that this is NOT a “must play” game for abe.. the giants although they do pose a risk… are a bunch of over-priced, over-hyped athletes(minus tiki)who have no respect for their coach. the d is still solid and i think abe is going to have to be a factor when we start playing those afc teams. it’s absolutely crucial that he play against pitt and cincy.

so.. abe get better…please don’t rush back until you are absolutly 100%!!!!!!!

I don’t mean to sound like an a*, but after three surguries isn’t it a little odd that the man hasn’t learned how to strech before a game yet? He must have the same physical trainer that the Thrasher’s goalies had last season. I love the guy, and there’s no question he’s a dominant force when healthy, but this is one of those “preventable” injuries. I hope he proceeds with as much caution as necc. and the Falcons don’t keep him in games any longer than they have to for as long as it takes.

I wouldn’t be so eager to write off the Giants as some of you seem to be doing. The Giants are a good football team that must be taken seriously. No, Abe shouldn’t play if he is not ready to go. But if he can play, he should play. At the end of the season, the team with the best record stays home for the playoffs. That would really be a huge advantage for the Falcons. Every game is a big game in the NFL. There is no such thing as an unimportant regular season game, whether it is the first game or the sixteenth. I believe we can win any game on the schedule without Abe. But our chances of winning those games increases dramatically with a healthy Abe. My point is, don’t rush Abe back if he is not ready, but don’t hold him back if he is.

Abe Has to play and go out there and earn his check! This is football and if we do not need him then why is he on the team. He has to play because it does not matter if he gets hurt again because this is football and you can get hurt on any play! Man up Abe and earn your check because if Mike Vick had a groin problem and was missing games because of it then all of you would be bashing him for not playing! Man Up, and Go out there and play or sit out for the year! I can see why the Jets let him go, he has a real groin problem and the team knows more than they are telling!

Abe and Heartwell are dead weight the birds are paying them mega bucks to watch the game wast of cap money yes there great players but not if they cant play no more than they have. When and if Abe comes back he will get hurt again the past has proved that

I really don’t think that D Williams should be benched! The guy is too good to be sitting on the sidelines. I just got a feeling that when the off season comes along we’re going too lose this man! And it’s a damn shame! He’s better than Brooking! Please coaches don’t bench this guy you’re be making a big mistake!

Boley is playing lights out also..Don’t see where Hartwell fits in xcept on goaline and short yardage sits,,,we have a very exciting group of young OLB’s going to be fun to watch for a long time

I’m with Lets be Real - time for those who are payed to play (Abraham and Hartwell) to step up. Falcons do need them and now. Let’s take out Eli and Big Ben (and everyone thinks Vick is over-rated)…

Seems to me that the game we really need aal our troups is Bengals in their stadium and Ravens in their stadium. While I know they play each week as though that game is the only one they are concentrating on, surely the coaches are thinking ahead strategically.

I hate to say this to atlanta fans but this is who john abraham is…a huge amount of talent,as intelligent as them come, tremendous producer, but will not and i repeat, not risk himself for the team EVER! your lucky if he plays games 9,10 and 11 and then gets “injured” again for your playoff run. sorry but i speak from years of experience.

LEE SUNSET, there is virtually a unanimous concensus among people associated with the NFL, both directly and indirectly, on and off the field, that disagree with your negative assessment of Vick. There is also a large body of intelligent fans that also refute your assessment of Vick. What remains is a small, but persistantly vocal group of ignorant spectators that cannot distinguish their anus from a hole in the ground. Author Blank obviously isn’t concerned about spending HIS money on injured players. So why should some weak minded individuals, obviously trying to establish some kind of fake machismo, be concerned?

I wonder if any of these people on here have ever even had a pulled groin muscle. Your mind can tell you “yes”, but that muscle will tell you “don’t even think about it”. I hope they have put it (the muscle) through a tremendous amount of stress during his rehab (I’m sure they have because they are a lot smarter than these bloggers), because if that muscle is not ready, he will know it the first time he tries to drive hard off the line. Practice doesn’t count because you’re not going game-speed.

All these people pushing for Abraham to come back RIGHT NOW, did anyone call for Brady Smith to HURRY BACK last year??? Just curious.

One other thing: Ed Hartwell was ready to come back last week, but it was the COACHES that would not allow him to dress out and de-activated him for another week. It sure would help if you folks knew what you were talking about.

Give Abraham a break folks. It doesn’t make sense to rush him out there when he is not fully recovered. If he gets reinjured after he was rushed back on to the field all the people saying he should of played sooner will be attacking him for being injury prone. Falcons fans you have to be smarter than that.

The defense is still shutting teams down and the offense is still finding ways to score (albeit Fieldgoals and not TD’s). The point is the Falcons are winning and we don’t need Abraham back right away so let’s give the guy all the time he needs to recover.

KEN STRICKLAND, no worries. You and I are agree more than disagree. Once we straighten out O’s redzone issues, watch out! I know it’s one game at a time, but Falcons WILL make the playoffs. My main concern is having to go to thru Chicago in January…

abraham will play 6 games for falcs this. He is a great player WHEN he plays but he is always out with questionalbe injuries. There were 3 different times when jets made playoffs and he took the game off. If he werent injury prone jets wouldnt have traded him, and now that he got his money he will take a looonnnggg time to recover. Watch and see good luck falc fans

Abe we will need your skills going forward. Greg Knapp is a problem . He has had his time to fix the passing game . Now we need some one who can do the job. When the run game shuts down the defense will have to stand up and win games. Play off we all hope for the best. Does Mora have the balls to fixs the flaw in the passing game or will he keep on blowing smoke and telling us some kind of Bull$hit about the passing. WE CAN DO A LOT BETTER SO GET TO IT!

By Rocknots

October 9, 2006 02:37 PM | Link to this

The RED ZONE has not been an issue under the Mora regime. However, we do have a problem with the #1 Pass protection #2 Receivers that will hold on to the ball. The DROPSIES can be contagious. Look at Seattle 2 years ago. Roddy White needs to pay more attention to holding on to the ball, before trying to protect himself for the hit. Hey Roddy!!! You might as well catch the ball because you’re going to get hit regardless. Lelie is slowly claiming your spot, with not only great catches but great EFFORT. You NEED to watch him work. If you would atleast FIGHT for the ball when its in the air, you’ll stand alot better chance of making it in the league. ONE TO GROW ON
