Answering the e-mail inbox

Technically, the Falcons are off until training camp opens in late July, but all the rookies and several dozen veterans are still attending morning strength and conditioning sessions at Flowery Branch headquarters.

So with the news flow relatively slow, I thought I’d answer some really good questions some of you posted on last week’s blog. I’ll try to do that from time to time from now through the season to keep you loyal followers as up to speed as I can.

I also want to thank you guys for posting so frequently and providing some thought provoking insight.

The need for a big defensive tackle: I don’t know if they necessarily need one, however none of the Falcons’ current DTs have consistently proved to be the answer. If Chad Lavalais can somehow get into better shape and sustain, he can be very effective. However, he faded last season even with Darrell Shropshire and Antwan Lake providing adequate play in relief. Shropshire really looks hungry. He’s got his body together and is very focused.

Of the veteran DTs on the open market, Brentson Buckner might be at the top of the wish list, especially since he played for division rival Carolina and knows a little about their schemes.

The offensive line’s pass blocking: I have to be fair on this one. I can’t give an honest opinion because this unit, which is the same from last year with the addition of left tackle Wayne Gandy, hasn’t put on pads yet. Once these guys start working against a pass-rushing monster like John Abraham in practice and play some preseason games, we’ll be able to get a better read. If the offense incorporates more of a moving pocket and sprint-out passing game, the burden on the offensive line could be relieved, somewhat.

Rookie OT Quinn Ojinnaka: Though he wasn’t in pads, the Syracuse product showed a very nasty temperament and some good agility that has coaches excited. However, much of playing in this scheme is being able to adapt and change a lot of the techniques that have been learned since youth leagues. That is why Ojinnaka will be handled like Frank Omiyale. He won’t play a down this season unless injuries force the issue.

Rookie tailback Jerious Norwood: From everything I’ve been told, he’s going to play more than just on special teams. In fact, he could push T.J. Duckett to be the No. 2 tailback. He’s going to be given a lot of carries in the first few preseason games and if he displays the traits that have coaches so excited, I could see him getting Duckett’s carries outside of short-yardage situations. What has impressed coaches the most is how quickly he’s picked up the offense, particularly pass-blocking schemes, which are often the most difficult adjustments a running back has to make.

Frequent reports: I’d love to have articles in the paper every day for you guys, but I can’t manufacture news. Most players and coaches are on vacation and are not available. In the next few weeks, contract negotiations will take place, rookies will be signed and there might be some more free agent signings. I promise, I’ll be on top of that and will get you the info as soon as I can.

I love the fact there are so many football junkies with insatiable appetites on this blog. Just hang in there because there will be plenty of stuff coming your way soon.

Thanks Steve! I believe if the defensive unit stays healthy… it could be one of the best units that the Falcon have assembled. The offense will be the question mark. An aging Dunn, unproven line, inconsistent QB, and young receivers. The only given is the TE position. I hope they perform well, but it is still a question mark.

I was wondering if D.J. Shockley would be a better fit at #3 than Randell? I haven’t seen Randell take a snap and having followed Shockley through UGA I’m aware of his true potential. I’m not looking for another Vick, I just hope he can perform half as good as Schuab. Matt is able to lead and I think D.J. can do the same. So my question is Randell or Shockley?

OFF FIELD ISSUES: This comment is for pretty much around the league. I’m really sick and tired of hearing about all the off season incidents that are going on around the league (i.e. domestic violence, DUI’s, gun charges, and worst of all drug charges) We’ve seen Randy Moss, Reuben Droughns, Michael Pittman, Chris Henry, Clarett, and many others with these issues. What are the Falcons doing to keep their players from falling into these situations and why isn’t the NFL being harder on players that fall into these categories? In the military we’re subject to being punished twice and very few things are swept under the rug. When you’re making the money they make and have the status they have as being role models/entertainers why can’t someone put a serious impact on this and make a few players an example????

The other outstanding issue is at the corner opposite “Aloha” Hall. Obviously the birds were geeked to have gotten j will, but the reviews seem to be sedate following the mini-camps. I haven’t been impressed with words like “we’ll see what’s he like in pads” or “i’m a physical corner” etc- sounds pretty ominous. I’m still as high on him as ever, but there might be problems when Roddy and Finn are taking you to school(not to detract from their talent, but you get the picture). Is is a case of just being a rookie and the shock of it, or indicative that he may not be as good as we were all lead to believe while he was at VT? Furthermore will any of this hinder plans to move j web to the nickel?

What are the chances that the Foulcons will ditch their really ugly uniforms and get some that look vaguely like football uniforms? The only football uniforms that look as bad as Atlata’s are those from the U. of Oregon. I’ve seen girls softball uniforms that look better than the pee-wee league designs the team is wearing.

Kwame, let’s watch the preseason games on DJ. My feeling is, he will move up to the number 2 position and give us the ability to trade Schaub for at least a #1. To me, he fits the same prototype as Vick.

The thing that concerns me the most is how unbalanced this football team appears to be. As currently constructed, they can only play with a lead. The defensive personel is best suited to play the pass. The offense is best at running the football. That’s great when you have the lead, but if this team finds itself trailing in the third quarter as it did much of last year…will it be able to stop the other team from grinding out the clock? Can they pass effectively enough to get back in the game? Time in the system will probably make the passing game much better this year, but the defense is still going to be gashed against the run.

I’m somewhat worried how the team will respond this year. There’s a great deal of expectation (trmendous pressure on Mora, Vick and Knapp to produce) after last year’s ugly finish. Appropriate moves have been made, but good lord what a schedule. How this team responds to being in a fight for it’s life every week (with the only likely exceptions being Detroit and Cleveland) may have a signifigant impact on the next few seasons. When Steve Sabol interviewed Bellicheck not to long ago he asked “What was the hardest personnell move you ever had to make?” Bellicheck replied immediately “Getting rid of Lawyer Milloy.” Let’s hope his winning attitude is infectious.

Bryan Randall is the 3 coming out of training camp. DJ will likley be on the training squad this year, and will have the chance to jump to 3 or 2 in 2007 when the Falcons are forced to move Schaub or lose him for nothing.

Maybe you can enlighten so many in the sports reading world that the OL is not responsible for every sack and that they take too much of the blame. When your your receivers run the wrong routes, the QB is likely to be sacked. If your undersized RB misses the blitz pick up, your QB is likely to get sacked. If your QB ducks and spins right in to the arms of a DT, he is then sacked….Finally, there are times when the OL does fail…..But not every time…..

What we do know about last year offense line they could not block traffic in the passing game. Unless Gibbs has dip the offense line in holy water look for the same. #61 and #62 are weak links in the offense. We need a real upgrade in our offense. We may need 4 QB’s before the year is out with this bunch of offense linemen we have. WE need real player on the line. My grade for this offense line is a d+ no more. PLease prove me wrong. The math don’t add up for this offense line. The training camp to do list is up grade the pass blocking and run blocking. To have a good line you must have something to work with and we don’t. That keep it real!

I’m online for pretty the same reason everyday…..The Atlanta Falcons! Notice I didn’t say, Hawks, Braves, or Thrashers!! I don’t even bother to look up Braves stuff…..It hurts too much! I personally think John Schurholtz is an ego maniac, and much rather get the credit for rebuilding year after year a “Division Champion”, than win the “Big One”! Check the facts…..Maddux, Glavine, Millwood, Sheffield, Furcal, Brian Jordan(the 1st time), Jermaine Dye, Mcgriff, Boone, etc etc etc…..Where are they know!!! Please don’t give me crap about the payroll. I’m talking about clutch hitting and pitching! Not players who choke every single year when it counts the most…..In 2001 Brian Jordan bats alomost 100 rbi’s with 25hrs, and .295 batting average, and by far the only one hitting in the playoffs and Mr. EGO lets him go to Texas….and better yet, get nothing in return. Just another Free Agent leaving the team and getting nothing in return(Sheffield)….sounds like the freaken Hawks. If your not gonna FREAKING SIGN THEM AT THE END OF THEIR CONTRACT….TRADE THEM WHEN YOU HAVE THE CHANCE…..I wonder what were gonna get for Al Harrington when he leaves this year, because you know we won’t sign him. So Steve, the Falcons are our only hope right know…..I personally wouldn’t give a rats a*, if you reported how much people are bench pressing in the weight room, or what kind of 40 times there running. I guess the “D” stands for “Desperate” in Houston….sorry about the little tangent I got one…..Damn Braves! We have been to the World Series 4 times in 14 years, with 1 ring! Enough said! Steve, give us all the Falcon news you got….even if you gotta fluff it up a little bit….

This is what I have been waiting for and finally someone else brought it up.

The helmets……sharp, new logo..cool. Ok, that’s about it on the good looking part of those uniforms.

I’m with you Grinch. Those unis when Vick was a rookie were nice home & road, maybe the best in the NFL.

If they don’t change those GOD-AWFUL uniforms at least get rid of those white pants. They look like my Granddaddy’s long johns.

Seriously, for the players to have to put on those costumes has got to be a blow to their professional psyche.

“D” in Houston,

If you followed the Braves closely enough, you would know that OWNERSHIP has significantly reduced the payroll over the last few years and, as a result, has TIED John Schuerholz’s hands signficantly.

Schuerholz is one of the best. Unfortunately, Time-Warner is worried about the bottom line and not winning.

Could you get us some information on the receivers (Roddy, Jenkins, and Finn) for the next update? Is Mike Vick still working with them. Is it “serious” work or are they just chatting it up and playing “catch”?

What about the kid out of Fresno State. How did he look at mini-camp?

It seems to me that Atlanta’s offensive line does not do a very good job of transitioning from pass blocking to run blocking when Vick scrambles. Back in the day of Fran Tarkenton his offensive line provided him excellent protection whenever he scrambled out of the pocket to run or to pass.

I would be interested in knowing what advise Tarkenton or Flutie would give to Vick and his new quarterback coach. It might not be a waste of the Falcon’s offensive line coach time to be a part of those conversations as well as taking a look back at some of the situational blocking schemes used for those old guys.

How good are our coaches? Every team in the NFC South has talent and they all essentially have the same approach to the game; “play nasty defense and run the ball down your throat.” Assuming this is true, then the difference maker is “which team is most prepared week in & week out.” That responsibility falls on the coaching staff. So I ask, “How good are our coaches?”

Hey Steve, will you be able to talk to Rich McKay about signing the rookies. The Falcons usually are among the first to sign a good deal of their rookies and get them into camp. The folks at Profootballtalk.com seem to feel that the new CBA will cause some issues with that. Any insight or a good article on it would be greatly appreciated.

The offense isn’t the problem. If everyone can remember the Falcon didn’t lose games last year because of not scoring points. Also the offense put the same numbers as they did last year when they went to the NFC championship game. So with defensive upgrade that we have I think we have do everything possible to combat what the rest of the division has done as far as their offensive upgrades.
I’m just not a Falcon fan I’m a realist and the numbers don’t lie!

Yes the defense needed real help from how they played last year and the falcons are 85% there now on defense . The offense had receiver not up to speed and vick hurt and the problem we have right now the offense line.We do have offense problem and offense line is 60% of the problem we have now on offense !

You know what will improve Atlantas game all together, si running more pass routes that exploit teams weaknesses! Go to there soft spots, Vick needs to know when the recievers breaks are, and when they are going to get open! Don’t wait and hit them when they first see them ,anticipate the route! Know your recievers routes and he will be a different quarter back! This will improve our defense as well, because we will have less three and outs! More time for Vick to pick apart the offense! The New Quartes backs coach is going to help alot! We need good screems at Defense less Zone pass coverage and more blitzes from the outside! We will get that from Our New Additons! We need a big butt though as Brooking has said! Get a bigg butt to wear down the offensive linemen down the stretch!

We love the Falcons so we do it every year. The only and I mean the only way that they win is when we EXPECT them to lose.

I’m Darth, you’re Luke…”search your feelings you know it’s true”

People, people the Packers, the PACKERS who lost two guards and have a QB in a 2yr. slump and they ran all over us. That’s not just the safeties.

Buffalo was running all over us when inexplicably they stopped running the ball. We added no bulk on either side of the line. Now listen, I want them to, I want them to, I want them to win but our skill players are very young and our big guys are not so big and if we can keep the games close can we win it with a late FG?

I want them to make me eat my words….that would mean that they won…and I’d have an reason to eat on Sunday nights..not throw up.

Yeah, all B.S. aside, I remember getting flack from out of state friends about how much the Falcons sucked (and I couldn’t really argue) but they always conceeded “You guts got cool uniforms, but so what if you don’t play up to them?” No worries about that now. They look like a Jackson Pollack painting. There’s no way all of us non-NFL players can’t identify with the extra ego boost that comes with looking the coolest. Remember the extra security and confidence we got from childhood games when we got to be the cool side? It can’t be much different for NFL players. Why make our guys start from behind the 8-ball by looking like CFL rejects?

What I don’t understand is how can the O-line be so bad since the Falcons led the NFL in rushing two years in a row? I know we don’t have any pro-bowlers on the O-line ,but that too is a puzzlement. It can’t all be Vick’s doings. Could it be that we are all doing the O-line a disservice?

I think the guys we have can be ballers, but they have proven nothing and now is the time to make them fight for their spot. I really beleive that with good talent out there, Mike will be at his best. Alge has been in the probowl several years consecutively, because he catches the balls Mike throw. I know that the kicking game isn’t exactly “sexy” to ask questions about, but I want to know what’s going on with it… I mean the Falcons haven’t been able to get a “Quality” kickers since the “Immortal Mort”. What about the kid from Memphis, Stephen Gostkowski? He’s got a boot and is accurate!! No, I am not a Memphis fan or a resident of the state (For the record I live in NJ and am a Georgia fan!). I watched him play a couple games this year and on a skills challege on ESPN for seniors going into the draft. I didn’t see him on any active roster!! Coach Nick Saban says offense lineman are the weakest player as for as skill goes in the NFL on most teams. Look at atlanta Falcons 5th and 7 th rounder on the offense with weak skill sets. People talked about Vick like a dog and won’t look what up fount blocking for him. Gibb the scheme is a poor scheme . 1. Small player that block better skilled player. Most front fours are 1th 2nd and 3th rounder. They were drafted because of skill level. Pass blocking will not work in this scheme because the are low skill low power and the player are small and low skill. Lets be real here Vick they are paying you win games with low paid player and low skills. All the A.J.C talks about is how we up graded the defense and thats good. But lets face the facts that our offense is the weak link on this team. Give vick a chance with skilled player. to block for him . We also need a good kicker. What wrong with management. Don’t fool your self and think 15 cent skilled player blocking and kicking are going to win the big games and little games we need help. drockb12- that was funny what you said about Brooking wanting a big butt in front of him. I guess all the linebackers do. Remember what Ray (O.J.)Lewis said? He was about ready to quit because he couldn’t run free? What a xxxxx (I can’t say, not ladylike) but it’s kinda like a wussy.

Grinch you seem to get smarter and smarter with each comment. Well at least as long as you are agreeing with me.

Ok ‘nuff of all this jibber jabber, I need a football fix.

Keepin it REAL, why don’t you please get over the O-line situation? OK WE GET IT. YOU ARE NOT SATISFIED WITH THE O-LINE. NOW SHUT UP AND MOVE ON. DANG DUDE!!

My question is whether Bird Babe can be replaced by someone with actual football knowledge, like Matt Cafaro or BirdDawg (assuming they’re not the same person).

Keeping it real mentioned two games out of sixteen. The O line, of course, can stand for some improvement; however, there was only one game (the last one) where the Falcons were never in the fight. Every other game could have gone either way. So if our offense is putting the necessary points on the board, it is up to our defense to prevent the other team from doing the same. Our offense is developing. Hopefully our defense can catch up. And after the injurious year we had last year, we have some “veteran” sophmores who learned the game quicker than would have been ordinarily necessary. I think that can only be a positive for us. Can’t wait to see what we do this year.

what ever I don’t want to here you guy talk about how bad Vick is doing when we have a 15 cent offense line. Most team that win the big on have good o-lines and d-line. THE fALCONS CAN’T MOVE ON TILL YOU HAVE SKILLED PLAYER. SO WHAT EVER WHEN EVER THE FALCONS DO THE MUST THING TO DO LIKE A GOOD O-LINE AND KICKER AS A WEAKNESS ON THIS TEAM I WILL KEEP IT REAL!!!! I WANT TO WIN THE FAN IN THE A.T.L HAVE HAD 40 YEARS KNOWING HOW TO LOSE! TIME TO WIN BACK TO BACK TO BACK!

I wasn’t implying that the O-line was excellent. I just want to stop reading post after post of you saying the same thing. Your new name should be Keepin it redundant.

A few grammar classes wouldn’t hurt either.

I’ve learned something now…Falcon fans will fight over whether or not we swallow our spit voluntarily. What does grammer and spelling have to do with the topic of this blog?

Look at the game tapes from last year. Look particularly at three games from the ‘05 (my god! we’re in the OO’s! Remember in elementary school learning “ancient” history when it was in the 00’s?)

The leading the league in rushing stat is at best misleading as it relates to the Falcons. Vick’s yards come mostly on UNPLANNED scrambles and the threat of him running opens up some plays for the team.

However look no farther back than the Buc game in Atlanta last season. Our lines were beaten down but we still had an opportunity to win that game.

The two fumbles, one by Vick one by Schaub is what beat the Falcons that day. Those were the fault of the O - line. If teams can come straight up the middle without being touched and around your LT in the same manner you don’t have a SB capable line.

Guys, Green Bay…GREEN BAY..who lost both starting guards stuffed the ball down our throats. Farve had a horrible season. Against us it wasn’t a contest. The game is physical.

Remember Jay Feely in Reeves’ last season? Crucial kicks were missed. If you don’t have a STRONG defense and strong special teams you ‘ain’t gonna win. Simple as that. I know it, you know it because we’ve seen it. Where would N.E. have been without Vinateri? You need a PK. Look at Dallas last year. If the Falcon - Cowboys game this season comes down to the kicking game who’s more likely to win?

If the team spent all of this money on a Super Bowl push they were misguided. Remember last year? “Safety is a position that you can fill with guys who’re released in camp” It’s going to be like that this season with both lines. We’ve got three high picks on both lines. It’s not happening this year.

Grammar is spelled correctly.

To “this get’s old”— you should look no FURTHER back, not FARTHER back. Further is the term for perception and depth. Farther is for distance.

Can anyone provide clarification on the possible T.J. Duckett for Ashley Lelie trade rumor?

By Smakmibichup

July 5, 2006 11:30 AM | Link to this

Well from what I heard there was going to be a three-way trade between the Patriots/Ben Watson(TE), the Broncos/Ashley Lelie(WR), and Atlanta/T.J. Duckett(RB). We would get Lelie, and the Patriots would negotiate amongst themselves how to package Ben Watson. BUT apparently the Patriots said HEY! we dont need no stinky running back, and we aint givin da broncos no watson, and das dat.

So thats the jist of it from what I heard, and this was like two weeks ago.

By Smakmibichup

July 5, 2006 12:18 PM | Link to this

Ok well Foxsports.com is reporting that trade talks have recently been in the making between Atlanta and Pittsburgh. Apparently the Steeler’s would like a safety net in T.J. Duckett if Duce Staley gets hurt. But the question is “What do we get in return.” Well there are a few options, seeing how T.J. Duckett is a five year veteran backup, we’re not going to get much but everybody likes to talk about getting a wide-body DT, how about Miami Draftee Orien Harris. At 6’3 302Ibs he’s a perfect fit in our system and he’s a great pocket pusher. He could be a force right next to Rod Coleman. But his injury problems have been a concern, but trust he’s no worst than T.J. Duckett.

Now another option could be WR Quincy Morgan. He hasn’t had much playing time but he’s another veteran leader in a young receiving corp. Now depending on how the Falcons package Duckett we could recieve conditional draft picks, this depending on who we get in return. But I wouldn’t dwell on it too much seeing how we know Mora and McKay. Just sharin’ my thoughts.

Quincy Morgan is garbage. Say what you want about Duckett, it would be highway robbery if all the falcons got for him was Morgan.

you hater get off tj duckett back. you will see the 2003 2004 on 1/2 of 2005 duckett. the falcons is going to the superbowl, i say to the superbowl. we like to be the under this year.

I SAID almost anyway you package Duckett, your going to get a conditional draft pick. So either way were getting something back. I rather see Orien Harris in a falcons uniform that Quincy Morgan. But his injury situation still bugs me but it it worth a try I guess.

Len Pasquarelli finally gave the Falcons some props today on ESPN’s website. Scroll to “Spotlight” and click on “NFL.” He thinks we’re most likely to be the NFL’s “rebound” team.

True Falcon fans know the situation for this year….PATIENCE.I’m not saying to sit there and look dumb, but be patient till the season starts.Vick,Knapp,& Mora,Jr. knows this is their make it or break it year. Vick knows in the back of his mind he’s the bread and butter of this team. If he doesn’t suceed, the TEAM as a whole doesn’t suceed. Those boys’ have a big chip on their shoulders. They felt like they should have been in the NFC championship game insteed of Seattle, and should have been Division champs insteed of Tampa. If you ARE a true fan, you guys who are knocking Da’ Birds would know the TEAM wants to get back to where they were 2yrs.ago.Vick will have his best year this year.R.White and the “Michael Vick” experience will also happen this year. The defense is a sleeping monster waiting to come out of it’s slumber. Right now its about 90% there, and thats just b/c certain players still have a few cob-webs to sweep out from last year injuries. And the rookie J.Williams have to show up better than reported.Abraham,Milloy, and Crooker have to really help us on Defense where we really needed it last year. Put K.Brooking and D.Williams back where they need to be,and we’ll be fine. A true fan knows this team strengths and coat tail riders don’t know shyt. The key to OUR sucess like every other team in the league…..Stay Healthy. If we do that, NFC South, NFC Champion, and Super Bowl appearance #2.And we have a damn good shot at willling it.

ARTHUR BLANK IS AN IDIOT:

How do you pass on Randy Moss when the falcons haven’t had a #1 wr for almost two decades.

Give me a break. These bums(h and mckay) aren’t doing everything in their power to make the falcons a winner.

With a guy like Moss he makes the offense and defense better.

Dirty Bird posted,

“How far has Randy Moss taken a team? How about that season in Oakland last year? Here’s a guy who walks off the field before the game is over. Great guy to have on your team. Smoothie anyone”

How about to the playoffs every year he has been in the league except for 2 years. How about 2 NFC championship games.

Also that situation in Oakland is a mess(hence the reason for hiring a new head coach).

If you don’t think for one minute w/ the additon of Moss the falcons don’t become instant favorites to reach the super bowl then you are just a tool.

BTW,

His half effort is better than any falcon wr 150% effort.

Tee Draper,

You are the fool. At least the Falcons brass stood by their principles to keep and acquire high character guys. They have to be respected for not bending just b/c a guy has talent.

And as for Moss making the Falcons instant favorites for the SB…um, its funny how you give him props for 2 NFC championship games. One as a rookie and they lost to the falcons. The other, they got shut out 41-0. Not a gotdam point your boy scored in that game. So now you want to make excuses for him in Oakland.

You da fool Tee Draper (Tela wannabe)

The Keys to the Falcons having a breakout season are as follows: (1.) STAY HEALTHY!!!(Are team is fine personel wise we just cant get hurt while we’re 6-2 and going into a bye week) (2.) START EARLY!!! (One of the Falcons main problems for years is getting a slow start. You can’t assume your defense is going to stop your oppponent, this isn’t Madden you know) (3.) SCORE! SCORE! SCORE! (With any chance you get whether its a 2nd and 10 at the opponents 20, a kick-off/punt return, or a fumble and or interception. Try to bring it back home into a score no matter what, don’t give up. We had a lot of defensive scores in 2004.

Thats just my opinion, im out. PEACE!!!

THE FALCONS NEED RANDY MOSS!!!! He wants to come to atlanta, that would be 4 big ofeense weapons. With Vick, Dunn, Crumpler, and Moss, plus Roddy White and Micheal Jenkins on quick passes. That would an ultimate offense, along with that stacked defense = superbowl. I wish i could find a way to tell Author Blank about this. If there is a way to email Mr.Blank someone please let me know. Atlanta could really use a fast dominate reciver. He be able to spread the field for the offense soo much more. So if there is any possible way to get the to the Atlanta front office it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Ernie Casteel GO FALCONS!!!
