D. White demoted
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Dez White was demoted Thursday to No. 5 receiver — last in line — with Brian Finneran moving into the starting split end job and veteran Jerome Pathon ascending to the No. 4 receiver spot.
No. 1 draft choice Roddy White is now the No. 3 receiver, and is expected to have an increased role Monday night against the Jets.
The decision to demote Dez White wasn’t a shock as the coaching staff had exhausted its patience waiting for him to make plays. His two dropped passes against the Saints were the final straw.
If Pathon and Roddy White show anything, Dez might not see the field again this season. That would be the second inglorious end for the Falcons’ starting receivers from 2004: Peerless Price was cut toward the end of trainig camp. Last year’s starters, Peerless Price and White, have moved on without them.
On the defensive side, there were no personnel moves Thursday, but coach Jim Mora in particular is paying close attention to safeties Bryan Scott and Keion Carpenter. In his daily press conference, Mora said the two had to play better in run support.

It’s about time! As a matter of fact right after last weeks game I e-mailed the Falcons asking if they had seen enough of Dez.

Walter,
Thank you again for your continued support as a consulting manager of the Falcons organization. Without your critical eye and unmatched ability to develop world-class football teams, the success of this year’s squad would be greatly diminished. Here’s to a continued wonderful partnership, and a world championship season.
Yours,
Head Coach Jim “I take orders from Walter Beach, and only Walter Beach” Mora

Finally… Why doesn’t Mora have his eye on Jason Webster too? I understand though, I cover my eyes when the ball gets thrown his way too.

Thanks for this timely report Steve. I’m really starting to enjoy your blogs. It’s been obvious for a while now that Dez White was not going to be able to hang on to his starter status. Unfortunately, I was hoping it would be because he got out played by one of the other receivers, not because he stopped producing. I wish him no ill will. It’s just football.

DIRRTYBIRD, the reason Coach Mora isn’t going to demote Jason Webster is because the Falcons do not have anyone else on the roster to take Webster’s place. Who would you suggest Mora sub in there for Little Webster.
By the way, Webster is a stealing money from Author Blank. What a waste—sad thing is, we can’t do anything about it this season. We will have to live with the guy for the duration.

Great news on Dez White, thanks Mora! Now, find out what’s going on with Keion Carpenter, I have seen him make too may arm tackle attempts, esp. in the New England game. There are too many guys out there that want to play this game and we need to be after the best player at everyone position.
I just wish you would have benched Dez sooner, but this is fine, better late than never.

Congratulations to Brian Finneran. He has earned the right to be a starter. Now Roddy will have more of a role in the offense. Mora really talked him up prior to his hold out. Hopefully his learning curve will accelerate now and he will become a key contributor in the passing game.

You all love Coach Mora when we’re winning, but loose a game or players do not play up to their potential and you’re ready to crucify him. Take your season ticket money elsewhere. I am upset with the performance of this team also including and not excluding Michael.

Fin deserves the starting position. My question is, would it have taken this long if he was black?

It’s not a race issue with Finn, it is a speed issue. Finn is like a Chris Collingsworth, good hands and average speed.

Brian,
I guarantee you that there are at least 10 people on practice squads or waiver wires that are better at CB than Jason Webster. Mora hangs on to Webster because he is loyal from the 49er days. It’s really unfortunate. Cut Jason Webster and develop a younger player. You can’t play any worse. This guys is supposed to be a veteran?

Quik, yea probably. Finn is a slow guy. He’s just not very fast and in the NFL most of the scouts and G.M.’s only care about 40 times….
I’m just happy Rod White will see the field more now. More reps for the kid is a good thing…..

I am sorry but I can not believe the Falcons stood pat on the trade deadline. Other than Williams they do not have any linebackers that show up. They should have made a run at Lavar Arrington, he may not be starting in Washington but where ever he ends up he will go in with and chip on his shoulder and something to prove. He still has talent.

Quik, you are right. If Brian Finneran were black, he would be faster and would have been starting a long time ago.

BOZO, that would have never happened. The Redskins would have took like a 12 million dollar cap hit if they traded him to ANY team, so Atlanta would not have gotten him if we tried to. I think Mora is learning that because someone knows his system, that does not mean, they can execute.. Our secondary as a whole is being preyed on. Carpenter should be sidelined for the coming away soft on the 24 yard scamper by A. Smith of the Saints. Donatelo I understand why you play so much zone know. I could not understand why, but I know now. DeAngelo Hall plays out of position to much and B Scott has lost so much confidence, you can shave the butter off of him… The have been exposed and teams are going to eat them alive…

I’m really worried about Mike Vick, maybe if we start back calling him Michael Vick instead of Mike he won’t get hurt as much. I’m a loyal fan and all ways will be but i’m starting to see a Chris Miller develop here. Oh by the way tell him to stop whining and start playing football.

Call It Like I See It, Your sweeping indictment of “all Atlantans” suggests that you personally know everyone in Atlanta. If that is true, which I highly doubt seeing as how I am a native Atlantan, then your opinions carry a significant amount of weight. But if you do not know everyone in Atlanta, then you can take your opinions and stick them where the sun does not shine.

Mora did right by the Dez thing, the safety play has been suspect but Webster has been even worse. Whatever became of Buhl. You couldn’t ask for more out of a potential propspect and we got rid of him and kept Webster. Falcons need to strike while the coals are hot, a somewhat weak NFC, yet the Falcons resulted to politics, and favoritism instead of results. They got rid of some very productive LB’s and backup DT’s. The front seven was fine it was the safety and RCB positions that needed to be addressed. The Kevin M. injury is much bigger than anticipated. For some reason they did not like Draft and he was productive. Hartwell, was looking like a bust. The old age is catching up to Brady and Kerney has been playing hurt all year. The Rookie DT’s take too many plays off, unlike Jasper who went at it full throttle like Rod C. and Kerney, and Brady when healthy. They masked the DB and safety issues but thus far haven’t been able to generate that much needed pass rush. Webster, has to go!!

Demoting D.White is progress. His masquerade as a starting NFL WR is now over. So the next project should be ending the masquerade of Keith Brooking as our “star” defensive player. Please annoint Kerney, Coleman, Brady Smith, DHall, DWilliams or all five in his place. They are the ONLY playmakers on the defense, and Brooking makes more mistakes than he does plays.

Let’s face it what the FALCONS should have done was get rid Dez White instead of Peerless Price. (before the season started) What that would have done is sent a sign to Peerless to step up, or you’re next. Also it would have left us with the opportunity to see if Price was going to have any improvements in productivity. I mean is there anybody who thought Dez White would ever be the receiver we needed for big plays or sure hands. I doubt it! Peerles was always better than Dez and that’s not saying much. Now one is gone, the other is on the way out, and we’re left with several unproven receivers again. (Except Finn)

Peerless Price cost a lot more money than Dez White. Look how Price is doing in Dallas too. Has he even been activated yet? They both are sorry. Let Finneran and the young kids step up. We run the ball anyways.

Yep, he did cost alot more money than Price, but it didn’t save us much by cutting him first. And true enough Finn has shown the ability to make big plays no question. However Micheal Jenkins still has a way to go and honestly has not shown the desire to be a go to man. As far as the “we run the ball” comment. It will do just that “run out” if we don’t show that that we can attack the feild vertically as well!!!

Lets be honest, Dez is terrible, he should not be playing in the NFL. It is time to play Roddy and Jenkins with Fin as the 3 and red zone reciever. Lets see what the young guys can do. The NFL is no longer a developmental league, you have to play your picks especially your early rounders. Roddy is not getting any better riding the pine and practicing against Jason Webster. Jenkins with playing time seems to making some significant strides week to week. I think by the last third of the season he will be putting up some 100 yd. weeks.

Our running game seems to be working fine so far. You have to be able to stretch the field a little, but we don’t need a big name receiver, as he won’t get used to his full potential anyways. We need some role playing receivers that can make a grab when the ball gets thrown at them, sell their routes, and make a block or two.

Finn has been a reliable, steady receiver since the days of Chandler. How many wide-outs have come here expecting to take his job only to shrink from the many responsiblities given. His talent is obvious, his perseverance is inspiring.
Now replace him on special teams and watch his production increase.

Good Point Doc Reem they shouldve kept Peerless Price and let Dez White go. Also they shouldve let Jason Webster go too and found some DB help. Hopefully they will address that this offseason.

We’ll see tonight if the coaches and players have taken meaningful steps to shore up the defense. The S & Cornerbacks know they are under a magnifying glass right now. Let’s see if they step up. The line can’t do everything and the LB need to stop any potential long runs. Is Finn, Jenks & Roddy the answer? Time will tell. All hail Crump!
On the issue of race in Atlanta, folks here, black and white alike, know we have made great strides to respect, live with and love each other. There will always be extremist’s and racists and bigots, unfortunately. If we all extend the hand of friendship and peace to one another, it doesn’t matter what color the hand is. Folk’s that don’t live here, don’t understand Atlanta.
My 2c worth. But folk’s this is a football forum. Let’s talk football.
