Carpenter bolsters secondary
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Everybody’s had a say on Peerless Price. I’m moving on, specifically to Keion Carpenter.
After suffering a knee injury last summer that caused him to miss last season, the veteran safety returned this season to questions about whether he was durable enough to even make it through training camp.
He’s answered all doubts by going making it through the preseason with no physical problems and playing above and beyond all expectations, according to coach Jim Mora.
Carpenter has been strong against the run, handled his pass coverages well and been the “aware” defensive quarterback that every team needs, Mora said. With fellow safety Bryon Scott still learning his way, Carpenter is the ideal tutor. He can make all of the defensive calls and adjustments in the secondary, allowing Scott and others simply to make plays.
Are you surprised by the apparent success of Carpenter thus far? How do you think he will impact the defense? Are the safeties still a liability?

I am not surprised at all, especially considering the dedication to the team he had while he was injured. He never missed a meeting or a game, etc. He deserves a good year.

I want to talk about where the Saints are going to play “home” games now that New Orleans is a dead city. Will they play in Death Valley? Will they go as far as San Antonio?
BTW, NOLA is supposed to be dead for the next several months. An oil rig disappeared from the Gulf of Mexico and several others grounded themselves inland. Oil refineries are destroyed. Several major underwater pipelines are gone.
Sections of I-10 across Lake Pontchartrain have collapsed, including the Causeway…
This is huge. NOLA combined with Baton Rouge is the second largest port in the US and it’s the largest oil port we have. Watch the gas prices go…
And we aren’t even talking about the effect on the rest of the economy.
Or, even more importantly, the public health issues of disease and infection, etc.
I know this is a football blog…but my family lives there…

Jen, I am deeply sadden by the effect of a natural disaster in NOLA. I have no clue what will happen next. Mostly, gas prices will go up and the President is gonna to have to make a decision on what to do energy wise. I just hope the death toll doesn’t get any worse.
As far as Falcons football, I am glad Carpenter is back. If he stays healthy, he will really help this team. He is a ball hawk. Any liability he has in terms of speed, he makes up in terms of smarts. My concern in J-Web.

Andy, thank you for your kind words. My entire family lives there. As of yet they are still fairly unaware of the scope of devastation. I get to watch CNN, but they can’t. They don’t see how the city is completely decimated.
Yes, I, too, am gladd to see Carpenter.

Jennifer, Do you ever post on Tom Fitzmorris’ food message board? Your name is very familiar. I tried to pull up the message board tonight a,nd I could not connect. I will keep all those affected by the storm in my heart, my thoughts and my prayers. Our country has been forever changed by the damage, both to property and in the tragedy of the loss of human lives

Folks,
Not to sound insensitive, but please stay on the topic, “Carpenter,” not weather or food forums, please.
I thought the loss of Carpenter last year was devastating. This guy is a natural leader and a big moment, big play guy. Having Carpenter back to quarterback our secondary will have the same effect as that of Gene Robinson for the 98 team (prior to his needs at the Super Bowl).
With TO and the Eagles coming soon, Carpenter could make the difference as no one can cover Owens one on one if McNabb is given too much time.

It’s already been said, but having Keion is like having a coach on the field. He will only better the defense this year.

Falcons fans…wake up. Peerless Price is the least of your worries. He was lousy anyway. The real unanswered questions of the Falcons:
Can Mike Vick or Ron Mexico complete 60% of his passes and throw for over 150yds per game?
Who is the primary running back on this team? The predictable nature of dunn(pass) and Duckett(run) is a joke.
Can the falcon defense continue to carry the team? When will the offense become balanced and efficient?
When the Philadelphia Freight train comes rolling through the Georgia dome, you will understand how far the Falcons are behind!
