No Word on Roddy; Other Rookies Look Good

There is still no word yet on the severity of the right ankle injury to Falcons’ first-rounder Roddy White. He was examined Sunday and supposedly was administered X-rays, but for now, all we have is his word that he was told it was a mild high ankle sprain.

Mild is the key description. If it is not a marginal to severe ankle sprain, White could be back in time to make a contribution before the end of preseason. If it’s anything worse, it could be tricky. High ankle sprains can linger for a long time and be re-aggravated with the slightest improper twist or tweak.

Hopefully we’ll get a prognosis by mid-afternoon. I’ll have the info on the website ASAP.

White seemed to be shaking off some of the nerves before he got hurt and was seemingly set to join his fellow rookie mates in making strong impressions.

Defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux is cat quick and could be a great backup to Rod Coleman. How promising do linebackers Jordan Beck and Michael Boley look to you? I’ve been impressed with their athleticism, physical play and more than anything, their knack for always being around the ball. Players like that create and capitalize on turnovers.

As for someone really wreaking havoc, DE Chauncey Davis has made a home in the Colts’ and Ravens’ backfields. He has looked very strong starting for Patrick Kerney. If he continues to progress, he and Kerney could provide a relentless tandem that could result in a lot of plays being made from that left side.

Kickoff returner DeAndra Cobb and offensive tackle Frank Omiyale have shown signs in practice and the coaches have high hopes for both.

And what about undrafted rookies Cole Magner WR and CB Jonte Buhl? They really played well against Baltimore and could be rapidly working their way on to either the active or practice squad rosters.

The Kicking game still makes you hold your breath, but Koenen looked okay against the Ravens. I’d still like to see a touch back on kick offs. The coverage teams will have to be good to keep return yardage down.

Geez, looks like the techs decided to delete all our existing posts on this blog and others in the changeover to the “new and improved” system. Hope it improves a lot more….

Yeah… and they deleted a whole new section of posts as well…

AJC figures we can’t gripe now because it’s free.

I can’t say I understand the logic of making the blogs free when they already had readers willing to pay for the service. I work on a newspaper, and to me it’s a strange move. Newspapers often start charging for something that used to be free. Not many go the other way. Opening the blogs to all comers frees it up for idiot fans from other teams to come in and flame us. Having to pay a fee kept that kind of riff raff out and allowed us to concentrate on talking football. I may be wrong and I hope I am, but it’s not off to a good start.

That’s cool, Now that it’s free, I can actually read it. I have my own hot Falcons blog, so this will be nice to actually read.

I’m not too keen on the loss of the subscription, either. There was a certain sense of community that’s gone now.

I have to tell you. This team seems to be driven and deep. We have a lot of stand-outs in this camp at linebacker d-line and this kid Buhl. How many times did he swat the ball away while he and the reciever were in mid-air? I will go out on a limb and tell you all right now. The Falcons will have a top 5 defense this year. Remember when the ‘bucs were horrible every year? That was before Rich Mcay started filling that roster with DEFENSIVE SPEED. Aside from that I haven’t really been impressed much with the receiver core. Yeah Magner made some good plays but that was against the third string. I want to see a real stand out. Who’s it gonna be?

A V103 ad on a Falcons blog? Love the station, but this is no place for plugs. Thanks for stripping us of our exclusivity, AJC!! Now any dope can chime in.

Whoa, I didn’t understand that the service was going to be fully free, I just assumed it would be discounted and i was getting a refund for the difference. I don’t like it. I like the sense of community we had. I am scared this will become a blog full of flamers. I am assuming the 5 minute delay in posting is so some AJC tech guy can check for obvious flamers, I dunno….so far, so good…only one silly ad for a local Hip Hop act.

I miss the daily blog from training camp.

Steve, from a numbers standpoint, does this Sunshine kid really have a shot…if so, what position does he effect (If the team keeps 6 WRs, it has to keep less players elsewhere)?

Now we’ve got spam in the blogs. Great. Just Great. The AJC probably had to make the service free because they couldn’t afford to staff it and give us our money’s worth. How long did we go without blogs? Better to issue refunds and make it free than to have a group of dissatisfied subscribers. Am I alone in thinking that it’s going to be tough to put the Genie back in the bottle? We’ve had a taste of community, now it’s open to the world for better or for worse.

Wow. I’ll admit I’m only in here because suprise, suprise, it’s free. Curiously, I didnt think it entitled me to promo my cousin’s, sister’s baby daddy’s music group. Bad form, is bad form, no matter your music choice or blogging venue. Anyone see my new favorite Cole Magner at Bowling Green? Is this the real him? Or just a tantalizing fluke? All I know is, we need a go-to guy, and if we can’t have a T.O.(talent-wise) a poor man’s Billy McCafferey will be just fine.

That ad is exactly why this service needed to be a pay-only service. I already don’t like the structure (or the rif raff that’s been let in) of this thing. It was a lot easier to flow from one story/blog to another and know where the hell you came from or how to go back to where you were. This stinks.

I will admit I am also intrigued by Sunshine (from the article about Cole). I always love an underdog, though.

Okay, now I’m really angry. There was a new blog from Steve on this site yesterday (late last night Atlanta time). Asking what we thought the Falcons would do at wide receiver, if they’d make a move to add another player or cut Price etc. I know because I posted on it. Now that blog appears to have disappeared, along with my comments. What in the hell is going on AJC???

I never saw the new blog, Dom, but I’ve only been checking twice a day.

So, what did you say about wideout?

I am trying to figure out why we are posting under the same story…guess it is the bit about the new AJC.com site. Anyway, I want to see more of Cole to make a true assessment of if he makes the team or not.

Nice story on Vick’s childhood teacher.

Why are you all hateing on the music ad. This is a freedom of speech and press country. I actually read the blog about the group and went to their website. They are Hot!!!. These guys actually have good music with no profanity lyrics. We should all Copy and paste that blog and forwaqrd it to everyone we know. That may influence some of these other so called music groups. the lesson of this message is do your research before you comment. I love the new music group “AMP CAMP”. Visit their website and read their bio before you comment . In case you did not read Tara’s blog their website is AtlantaMusicProduction.Com or SonicBids.Com/AMPCAMP. Way to go “AMP CAMP!!!!!!

Whatever….Heather, Tara, same person.

As for freedom of speech and press…sure, but the creation of a Falcons Blog is so that people can talk about….THE FALCONS. If we wanted to talk about or know about music, we’d go to a music blog. And I would never go to see this crap. I’d be heading on over to a System of a Down blog……

By Dominic Hughes

Jennifer, I couldn’t agree more with you. Heather/Tara - you want to talk about music, go start your own blog. This is for the Falcons.

I doubt anyone would have had a chance to see that “ghost” blog but me. It was posted quite late Atlanta time, past midnight. I posted on it about 1am (middle of the day in Australia). Next day I went to see what was on it and the whole thing was gone. I’m sure I didn’t dream it!

Steve had praised the comments on WR made under Jeff Shultz’s column and asked what we thought the Falcons would do at the position - wait for improvement, make a move if a veteran became available etc. He said something about Mora’s comments about Price leaving the door open for him still to be cut. I said I thought that was unlikely given the cap hit involved and that I still thought some of the youngsters might step up. Or words to that effect. That and that Magner looked like he should be given a chance since he’s catching balls and making plays.

Oh and Heather/Tara - if you’re going to try to pretend to be different, actual people it would be an idea not to use the same email address.

If it ain’t past your bedtime Tara then go do your homework…

We don’t care about your group!

I want a full refund! If I had known it was gonna be free come football season, I would not have paid for the full renewal year in April!

AJC is in breech of contract as far as I’m concerned!

Cole Magner’s hair, Cole Magner’s not drafted, Cole Magner is slow who cares as long as he can catch and hold onto the ball that’s what matters. I would rather have a slow player who can catch with no YAC than a fast player who can’t hold onto the ball.

By Jennifer

August 19, 2005 07:20 AM | Link to this

That’s how I feel…about WR. I mean, yeah, love to have an all-in-one wideout machine. But if someone can get in the right spot, catch the ball, and hold onto it he gets the job done. Hire him! Now, it’s a bit early for Sunshine, but it’s always exciting to see something like this. Ironic, wouldn’t it be? If Sunshine got a backup spot next to Price?

Dom, I couldn’t agree more with your comments to the ghost blog.

So…we’re haunted by spam and ghosts, here….

I even post on hip hop blogs. This is not one of them. This is a Falcons blog. I like soccer, I even try to convince my friends that is not a pansy sport. But not here, because it its what? A falcons Blog! I like eggs, I even like them in a tree, Sam-I-am, but I would not, could not POST THEM ON A FALCON”S BLOG!!!!!! Got it? Jeez. I’m a former DB in school, so I spend a lot of time watching the DBs and WRs. After Balt and Tenn, it is clear that Jonte Buhl is developing into a superb corner. In the Balt game he shut down his side of the field and had an interception. In the Tenn game, he was like white on rice. Though the winning catch was on him, it was perfect route, perfect pass, no chance for any DB; and even the pass interference was a necessary “mistake” and resulted in a great goal line stand by the Falcons. But the rest of the half resulted in one 4 yard pass his way because he was sticking with it. With some more development I suspect Jonte Buhl will become as close to a shut-down corner as there exists in the league.

By CJ

August 29, 2005 01:33 PM | Link to this

I agree with you MWilk. Jonte Buhl is just what the Falcons ordered. The kid is hot! He’s able to stop defenders at the drop of a dime and he can catch the ball (did u see the redskins interception?)! There’s not a doubt in my mind that Buhl will make the team and go down in history as one of the baddest shut-down corners in the league! Keep your eyes out on him in Miami, I’m sure he’ll continue to impress us all…
