Hey, folks. I’m taking a couple days off to visit the Rocky Mountains. Feel free to return to some old posts while I’m gone.

At least you admit it—-sometime I just wish some of our educational “leaders” would admit that they have mentally “gone fishing” rather than make some hard but needed changes to our public education system in this state!

And to think that Harvard is second only to Yale as a LAW SCHOOL in the US.
Pretty scary that these grads know less about Government than they did in High School.
SET,
Any thoughts on this Brave New World?

Wouldn’t mind someone talking about the pathetic state of discipline in schools …
Specifically how in school suspension (ISS) and out of school suspension (OSS) have been rendered effectively meaningless in the past ten years. Punishments? Please. They are paid vacations for students.

jim d, loved the history quiz! I sent it to my college freshman son, and dared him to beat my score :-)

Yikes! Just finished reading the Unschooling article — scary stuff!
Look, we all do a lot of complaining on this board, myself included, but the fact of the matter is most home schooled or alternatively educated kids are morons because their parents are morons. This kind of hippy tree-hugging crap works only if you want to produce a child that will absolutely FAIL in the real world.
Last time I checked they weren’t handing out paychecks for finger painting and coloring within the lines. Keep in mind, I said MOST are morons. As the article says, if the parents are HIGHLY (a lot of stress needs to be placed on that HIGHLY), it is POSSIBLE that there could be some success, but the average home school kid I see at my school’s parents are idiots who don’t know their arse from a hole in the ground.
Last year we had to call DFACS on one because her homeschooled child didn’t know ANYTHING. Literally. We need more parents from the 50’s (and the disciplined, respectful children they produced) and less of these wimpy, can’t-say-no, I-want-to-be-your-best-friend, idiots who pass for parents in 2007.

V,
I tend to agree with “most”
I see it as a question of rights though. The question being “is it a parents right to decide what education is most appropriate for their children?” or does that somehow become an issue for the “state” to decide? In which I tend to lean towards personal liberties and responsibilty.
That being said, I have no problem with someone choosing to unschool as long as they are willing to accept those unschooled as personal wards forever and not dump them on the rest of us.

I missed 4 - darn Federalist Papers! :-) Never did like them! The son is trying to decide between poli sci, hisory and philosophy for a major (pre-law), and got 5’s on all his AP history exams, so if I beat him, he’s never going to hear the end of it!

V: I think a blog on suspensions could make for some great conversation. Why don’t you write up a guest blog about it and e-mail it to me at bgutierrez@ajc.com?

jim d, I don’t think too many 5th graders would know the Federalist papers, either! :-) I think you’re safe!
