Schrenko: Eight Years, No Parole
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I usually focus on classroom issues, but I could not let this one go without posting. Schrenko’s guilty plea brings to a close a bizarre case of political corruption in an office that does, if to a limited extent, impact schoolchildren. This woman held public office and didn’t bother coming to work. Now she has pleaded guilty to defrauding the government and laundering money.
I don’t know if there’s much to say, but I’ll bet Get Schooled readers will come up with something.

She got what she deserves. I don’t think 8 years is enough, though. She is a liar and a thief, and she stole money from Ga’s children. Our state already has enough bad press from the rest of the country. This just makes it worse!

All too often these days we have to ‘bear the insolence of office’ as Hamlet lamented. How nice to see justice served for a change. Eight years, no parole and full restitution is exactly what she deserves.

This case becomes more interesting. She copped a plea to turn state’s evidence against Botes and Steyn. I’m not certain about Steyn, he may turn state’s on Botes too. Botes on the other hand, is capable of commtting these crimes and the Federal Government knows. His attorney claims Botes knew nothing of this and Turner was acting alone, trust me, Botes knew everything. He’s an individual who is controlling, manipulative, and cunning.

I’d like to comment on your discription of Superintendent being an “an office that does, if to a limited extent, impact schoolchildren.”
I certainly do feel that the example set by the person in this position flows down—especially when there is supposed to be one state accountablilty system.
I guess that face lift won’t help her now.

OH HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN!!
As a parent of a disabled now adult, child who depended on the Georgia School Sytem for all of his education I am glad to see people like Ms. Schrenko put in their place. Too often Georgia has been the laughing stock for their lack of dedidcation to the education of ALL children. Hopefully with the sentencing of this woman, Georgia educators will begin to see that there will no longer be tolerance of officials who only pay lip service to the education of our state’s children.

It is always sad when a public official thinks it is possible to steal money from the government. Sooner or later they are always caught. The shame here is that this was a person who could have helped lead Georgia into the 21st Century, politically. Well, never mind, and let’s enourage the prison authorities to keep her the whole eight years.

Why is it that some people who hold public office think they can get away with defrauding tax payers, I am not just talking about the in your face criminal conduct displayed in this case but across the board. As far as I am concerned defrauding is also in the form of being paid to do a job, and then not actually doing the job, and getting others to come and “fill in” at additional cost… for example… our courts, where sitting Judges are getting other visiting Judges to do their work from other juristrictions, and we the taxpayers are having to fork out the additional $$ they are being paid. The Judge that should be doing the work still draws his/her salary, it happens all the time. It is one thing if the person is really busy or sick.. but take a walk through the court house halls and you will notice darkened court rooms after 2pm, and then look at the back-log of cases and you might also go Hmmmmm! I think this is a crime, while not quite as blatant as Ms. Schrenko, but taking a salery for a job you are not doing is in my eyes fraud! And we the tax payers are paying and paying and paying! This is just the tip of the iceberg, but here is the real stinger, most of the time WE ELECT these people… so next time you are casting a ballot do so with a little more consideration than that of party lines… vote for people who are hard working with honest track records, not shady backgrounds and false promises looking for a free ride and a goverment pension. At the end of the day I do not care if you are Repblican or Democrat, I want an honest hardworking person in what ever office it is in my City…enough already people, if we continue along these lines these crooked and lazy politicians will bankrupt our city!!!

What Linda Schrenko did is unconscionable. However, it has nothing to do with which party she was affiliated. She has been replaced by a highly ethical, moral, upstanding woman who truly cares about kids and education - Kathy Cox. Kathy took over a Department in shambles and has done wonders! Thank goodness she was able to pull the sinking ship Linda left her with out of the water and get it sailing again.

John; When you live in a glass house did your mother not tell you not to throw stones… your comments: What?…a corrupt politician..and my heavens,a republican?! boomp, boomp, boomp…”another one bites the dust” Just shows what a simple mind you must have. All I can say is, at least she did not leave someone in a car to drown, and we Rebublicans while not perfect at least have the sense to know that once someone has done something criminal not to elect them into office, I do not see Linda holding office ever again as a Republican!! Accidents do happen, none of us are immune, it is what you do after the accident that defines your character… and whether you will be elected to a Rebublican office or not… it seems Democrats err first then get elected!I would like to think that if we know ahead of time that someone is less than honorable we would not still put them in office… I could be wrong but it does not seem that way… from my personal observations.

None of this surprises me. I worked for the GA Board of Education briefly and found it to be swarming with thieves, deadwood do-nothings, and pedophiles. The most egregious of these offenses involved the MRESA-Net project, an internet boondoggle which the AJC covered as part of its expose on the E-rate scandal, where millions of dollars of federal funds were in the untrustworthy hands of a man who had a previous arrest record for sex crimes, and now awaits trial on multiple child molestation charges in Gwinnett County.

Kathy Cox is the worst thing that has happened to GA education since time began. I would rather have Linda steal more money from us than have Kathy.
Kathy Cox, the republican, ONLY got elected because voters confused her with Cathy Cox, a democrat. Kathy has made GA education the laughing stock in the nation and the world….. everything from the evloution issue to funding. Kathy only cares about her ultra-conservative base and doesn’t give a flip about education or about the children of GA.

Linda Schrenko is just the latest example of the institutionalized corruption of the Republican Party. It is an irrefutable fact that ALL - I repeat ALL - Republicans are corrupt. Democrats have only a few bad actors, but ALL Republicans, down to the very last person, are TOTALLY corrupt. Republicans are proving this truth every single day. Republicans are going to learn in November that their criminal behavior and their culture of filthy corruption will no longer be tolerated by the American people. It is high time that more Republicans started paying the price for their crimes. I can only laugh at Linda Schrenko and the rest of the GOP dupes who continue to defend the indefensible criminal Republican party. But even so, I sincerely hope that Linda’s cellmate doesn’t take Linda’s hateful stance on gays too personally, for Linda’s sake…

The Shrenk, today, got a small bit of what she truly deserves. Over the years she has ruined many lives and many careers. If the associate was ethical and would not bow to what she wanted then they were gone. She never learned what it meant to be loyal or ethical. It would have been nice to see her convicted with more years to serve, but at least she had to admit that she was guilty and stole from the children of this State.

Just want to throw this out…
To all of yall battling back and forth about republicans and democrats: you are the reason we get bad people in office. You are so quick to stick up for one party of the other, that you fail to look at the PERSON. The two party system in America is failing miserably on EVERY level. When will people wake up? From the president right down to our local state representative, we are paying more attention to who they are affiliated with than what they stand for.
Why don’t you try taking a step back and looking at different politicians stance on issues that are important to you? Instead of just pressing the red button or the blue button when you get in the booth. You have no one to blame but yourself. I get so sick and tired of seeing so many mindless drones who sway one way or the other. Half of them couldn’t even tell you what each party tends to stand for on major issues. You sound like my students, who simply regurgitate everything mommy and daddy say…
“They are a christian so I like them” “They are against gay people, that’s good” “Democrats like black people” “The war is stupid, democrats rule”
See how ignorant that sounds? Wake up people, or you will be complaining about the same exact crap in four years.

Wow, a corrupt politician. Who would have figured?
Well, at least we can all sleep soundly tonight knowing that all the money that is being involuntarily taken in taxes from everyone in Georgia is being spent perfectly well by the school system. Wait, why is everyone laughing?
You mean there might still be rampant corruption going on in the school system? Well, I’m not going to stand for that. I am doing what every free, responsible person should do in this situation. I am not going to contribute any more money to this corrupt system. Why all the laughter again? I can’t stop paying into this corrupt system? If I don’t pay my taxes you’ll put a lien on my property and get the money plus interest when I sell?
But how are we supposed to fix a broken and corrupt system like this if everyone has to keep paying no matter how bad things get and their only recourse is to hope that an occasional conviction like this catches one of the corrupt types? When the United Way was plagued by a similar scandal, everyone was able to stop contributing, things got fixed, and the United Way is much better today for the response of the marketplace. Wait you say, the government school system doesn’t have to obey the laws of the marketplace.
That’s right, the government schools are socialist. They steal their money from hapless victims in society, they answer to nobody (although they pretend by having school board elections that appear honest), and they never have to change to respond to marketplace needs. Wow, how did we ever let something like this come about in our supposedly free country?

V for Vendetta:
Good post, but I would add some additional points.
You say “half of them couldn’t even tell you what each party tends to stand for on major issues”. From everything I have seen it really doesn’t matter what each party tends to stand for on major issues. None of the candidates stands for any of those things anyway. You can say that the republican party stands for small government, but there are no candidates in the party (except for congresssman Ron Paul from Texas that actually vote that way. Pick a topic and the same will hold true for 99% of democrats. Neither of these parties has any real principles or feels in any way compelled ot stand for anything.
Meanwhile, the Libertarian Party, the Green Party, the Constitution Party and many others have solid, principled stands on virtually all policy issues, and their candidates stand behind their platforms 100%. Unfortunately americans have so little courage of conviction that they are more afraid of voting for a loser than for a candidate that supports their true beliefs. To make matters worse, the dems and the republicans have stacked the deck in virtually every state against 3rd parties even being able to get on the ballot. They control the debates and won’t let anyone else in that might threaten their two-party control of this country.
Anyone who really thinks there is a difference between the two parties should log onto their web sites, actually read their party platforms, and then log onto the Libertarian Party page at least at www.lp.org and see what a truly different document that is.
Yes, blind allegiance to one party over another is plain insanity, but it is no worse than blind allegiance to a choice between two virtually identical parties/candidates either.

Go V! A frequent observation on this blog is how miserably public schools are doing at teaching critical thinking skills. It seems to me this isn’t a recent development, as most of the bloggers show this blind obedience to the ‘us vs. them’ red state/blue state mentality. As a whole, people are so lacking in critical thinking ability that they allow and even want Limbaugh or Air America, Dr. Laura or Dr. Phil to do their thinking for them and tell them what to do. This in turn, amounts to Carte Blanche for politicos from Bush to Schrenko to do whatever they want. Sad New World!

After all did the government or court system go after the Dekalb County Sheriff who illegally invested millions and lost the money? That was taxpayer’s money. I have said it before and I will say it again. If we the people demand the the government put back all the social security money they have used for other things and pay interest, well it would be set for many many many years to come.
So yes, 8 years is good. She just needs a lot of company where shes going.

Another show of Republican “family values”… this is a “family” that “values” stealing from those less fortunate (children, for heaven’s sake!), lying about your innocence for all to hear when you’re caught and then finally pleading guilty when it’s clear there’s enough evidence to send you to prison forever. This is a microcosm of the theft, lying and corruption that pervades the Republican party as their policies and lies result in $3 gas, tax cuts for the rich, war without end, division and deception to win elections, etc. One down… more to go!

I guess even with her face lift she wasn’t too pretty to go to jail. I bet Big Bertha is waiting on her. We’ll see her soon on the cover of Prison Bride.

if you ‘third party’ pushers would ever win a freaking election you might get some respect.
I only support the Dems since they are the ONLY ones capable of throwing out the criminal warmongering administration installed by the Supreme Court in two rigged elections.

Why did she get so much time and the woman at Moorehouse who ruined the lives of thousands of college students get a few months? Race? You bet; this is Atlanta where a DeKalb sheriff was executed and justice was served only when the jury was picked outside of Atlanta. Same as Campbell. Blacks in Atlanta have a get out of jail card. My money says Brian Nichols witll get a majority black jury and get life with the possibliity of parole in Atlanta. He will ride the needle for killing the Federal agent, for that will be a different jury and not one from MLB Blvd. can balcks issue a death penalty? No. And you wonder why so much crime in their community.

there once was a girl named Linda;
whose face was put through a blender;
the results are loud and clear;
she is going to prison for 8 years.

Maybe someone should have reminded Linda Schrenko of “Zero Tolerance”. Our Children are suspended and expelled for a Tweety Bird chain or having a Butter Knife and sometimes just doing Childish things while the State Superintendent violate the trust that has been placed in her by the People. What happen to Honesty and Integrity.Eight years may be long enough for her to get a passing grade.

I think that she got off easy. I am an elementary school teacher and I would have seen a harder penalty, maybe 25 to life. It makes me sick that we get around 80.00 a year for school supplies for our class and that dried up old prune took money that was meant for our kids so that she could get a facelift. Well, that just means she’ll have more girlfriends in the pen.

The things middle aged “wanna be’s” will do. If this ticks you off….take a look at the crap your congressmen and senators get as they sell us out to lobbyists and special interest groups. The people need public servants versus this “good ole boy” crap going on now. Reject your party and go Independent.

Take politics out of education! The State School Superintendent should not be an elected position, but rather one hired on merit.
Schrenko’s theft and deception evidenced in this case is only the “tip of the iceburg” of damage that she did to Georgia’s DOE.

I agree with “Dano”….except now being an “independent” is a party. Reject ALL partys and become a “free thinker” so that the Politicians - Poly (meaning many)Tic (blood sucking creature) will not know who to pander to. This will make them do what is correct for all Americans. Not all politicians are crooked, but it sure is easy to lift a rock and find one!

CH my gut reaction is to agree with you However there is some merit in having independent oversight of the “education community” there are many post bashing politicians administrators and the failure of “progressive teaching” strategies. Lets not forget the adminstrators pushing these strategies are all products of the education community which carries its own political agendas. The problem is removing the politics while ensuring a balanced view of goals objectives and performance

Republic or Democrat..makes no difference..she stole money..she is a witch..she deserved much more than 8 years. May her 8 years seem like 16 when she has to pick and choose her ‘girlfriend/protector’ and obey them..with her new face!
Lets just hope she doesn’t get put in a cell with color tvs, recreation time and any other good time stuff! She deserves to work in the kithen with her new face…standing on her feet 8 hours a day like some of the law abiding citizens do every day of their lives…with their plain jane faces…honesty will always come out on top!
Have fun new face Linda!

Remember when, back in ‘97 or ‘98, Gov. Zig Zag Zell abandoned and dismissed all of his state board of education appointees in order to side with this crazy woman? This was the first time I remember thinking that ZZZ was a was a selfish, uninformed, gutless traitor.

As a teacher, woman, and taxpaper, I am appalled at Linda’s actions. We in the classroom work so hard to try and improve schools and she and DOE are a deterent to this success. After 8 years she should have to work in a Title one school for another 8 years.

Deeply regret that often the right, particulary the Christian right, is too quick to jump in bed with any politician that that picks up a piece of the republican platform and goes to bat with it. I equally regret that it goes on all the time. Sadly, the media is set ablaze with this hyper-pious attitude that will condemn the right but turn away their critical view and ire if it involves the left.

She deserved at least 20 years for stealing from our school system. Any person who would steal from children and taxpayers should get extra prison time.
I just wished she had plead guilty when this whole thing came about, but she was so shallow - she must have thought they didn’t have a case.
I think the sentence should have included interest on the money she stole, for all the years she is in prison.
The sad thing is that, we will have to support her the entire time she is in prison.
I have a good way to teacher her a lesson for stealing from Tax Payers, she should be required to TEACH all of those female prisoners for the next 8 years. Let’s make her earn, her stay.

I hope whatever prison they send her too, they have a good psych ward. Have you seen that broad lately? She’s got insanity written all over her. Oh wait, maybe it’s just the fact that her face is now 3” higher than it used to be. And we paid for it!
Frankly, I don’t think she’ll ever see a day in jail. I think she’ll off herself before going to jail for 8 long years. At least that would save the taxpayers of Georgia the expense of her upkeep for the next 8 years. Might be one of the few decent things the witch ever did.

It is funny to hear all of the whinning about Republicans. A crook is a crook, political party is irrelavent. Hell, I am still waiting for the distinguished senior senator from Massachusetts to explain his aquatic escapade that happened thirty years ago.
Schrenko was a dummy and dummies get caught. Perhaps she should have taken some lessons from the junior senator from NY in the art of “Kevlar” politics.
I would not be surprised to see Stephan Botes be aquitted with all of the rats testifying against him to save their own skins. It makes their credibility very questionable.

Sue “you wonder why so much crime in their community.”
You really did not type this on your screen. Are you crazy or stupid? There are plenty of black people who teach their children to be law abiding citizens. The crime is not only in our community. I live in the North Gwinnett area and you would be amazed how many rich, white kids are acting a fool and selling drugs. Black people don’t bring drugs and the crimes and problems associated with it to this country, WHITE people do!!
So, if you are going to comment on this topic then do it about Linda. She is the one who did wrong and got caught. Trust me, anything that we don’t catch down here right now, God will catch up there, later on. If you think that people are getting over because of their race, look on death row. Most of those people are black and guess what, most of their co-defendants were white and they got life sentences or better yet, they got off.
I could stay on this subject all day so don’t go there with race. Linda was wrong, she got caught and she got punished. That is the way it should have happened. Better yet, if she had behaved herself, none of it would have happened at all.
