Cheers and Tears
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Cheers for 50 Strong, a program at Martin Luther King Jr. High in DeKalb County. Here’s Kristina Torres’ story. Started by the school’s new principal - an athlete turned health teacher turned school leader (sound familiar?) - the program helps kids who are doing poorly in the classroom by spending time with them after school, helping them with homework and fostering a community. Can something good really be this simple?
Tears for Rachel McKee, the Fulton County bus driver killed in the line of duty. Here’s Mary MacDonald’s story. Driving a school bus seems a thankless job, but McKee enjoyed it so much she held the job for 17 years.
Okay… for the next couple of weeks I want to resurrect some of the best Get Schooled discussions. Any nominees?

To see what MACE, that radical teacher’s union, thinks about Principal Nelloms at MLK in DeKalb, go to its website: www.theteachersadvocate.com. Scroll down and check out the headlines and pictures that detail the various pickets MACE has engaged in against Principal Nelloms at MLK. It is telling that Dr. Trotter and the other MACE personnel found Principal Nelloms so needing of improvement that MACE has held pickets at the school twice, even showing up for the first day of this school year, and has held pickets at the school board twice as well, showing up there as recently as last week!

Mace Member: I used to work with Nelloms, and I don’t see what all your fuss is about. Nice guy all around.

MACE will do anything to get a few pictures taken. Trotter’s narcissitic and pickets anytime anyone complains about anything. Other than picketing, I can’t find more than a few instances where MACE actually did more than create a paperwork and relationship hassle for teachers.

Mace Member, while MACE may have some legitimate concerns with Mr. Nelloms, this is an article on a positive program impemented in that school for the benefit of our kids. I’d rather focus on that and thank those that are trying to keep more students from slipping between the cracks. I say congratulations to Mr. Nelloms and MLKing staff members for that!
Patti, how about discussing pro’s and cons of scheduling options, such as Block versus non Block. There is MUCH discussion in DeKalb now about this with many schools questioning whether the 4x4 implementation is achieving promised results. I’m interested in what those in other school systems, both locally and out of state, feel about that, specifically its impact of students wanting to take AP classes. A parent survey recently went out to guage feedback but I question whether parents ‘know’ enough about the options along with the impact.

The pricipal at MLK has good intentions and from what I read, so far seems successful. I am a high school special ed teacher and know first hand how hard it is to get some kids interested in succeeding. I want them to succeed in all areas of life, not only at school, but “real” life too, and many of these kids have serious troubles at home. What I would also like to see is rewards for the good kids too. Let my own children, who are on the principal’s honor roll, and never get into fights or trouble, have a program for them at school for “them”. Not everything in life will be for the people needing help. The kids who are not doing well need to learn that they have to make Hard Choices sometimes, and high school is the time to learn. I have 17 or 18 year old sophmores. They have no desire to succeed and don’t care at the beginning of the year, but by telling them I care, I want them to succeed, I will help them,.. I call them at home, together we work things out, they begin to care. Now is the time of year, I get them to make their own choices because they are young adults and have to decide where they want their lives to go. I want them to see that good kids who make the right choices get rewards too.

Its always a good idea to try to help all students in a school, and I give credit to the principal for trying to help. However, I used to teach and I can say that one program does not a principal make. Why does the the Journal run a positive story about the Principal at King when there are obviously negative stories that the Journal could of run before now. I went to that website Mace Member had in the first post. I saw alot of negatives about King’s principal. Where was the Journal for those stories? Did the Principal start the program to help the kids or did he do it to take attention away from that union calling him to task about what it had the pickets about?

I am familiar with Nelloms-worked with him on a limited basis. He was a slacker…period. Great, let’s put him in charge of teaching and leading these boys to bigger and better things. He will teach them how to get away with as much as possible with as little effort as possible. Yeah, let’s all praise him.

Perhaps MACE is the only union that has the temerity to take on Nelloms. Sometimes a union has to be “negative” to confront the issues. Hmm.

I wouldn’t want Nelloms to be in charge of my dogs.

Hey all, I’m shutting down the comments on this thread. A principal is a public figure, and he has the right to defend himself. However, no one has said what the beef is that MACE has against him, so I can’t seek comment from him. Please e-mail me or Kristina Torres at ktorres@ajc.com to further discuss this principal.
